Some of the historical background of the industry is reviewed, with reference to the different types of reduction cells in use for aluminum smelting. Factors to be considered in cell des1gn involve capital, power, and operating costs. The trend is apparently toward larger cells. The industry is studying new construction materials for cell linings, as well as alternate electrolyte compositions and other design changes which will improve productivity and energy efficiency. The aluminum smelting activity in other countries is briefly reviewed. TODA Y'S industrial production of aluminum is still based on the simultaneous discoveries made in 1886 by Charles Martin Hall in Ohio, and Paul Heroult in France. Up to that date, only about 50 tons of aluminum had been produced in the world, and the price at that time was about $5 per pound. Sucl1 figures must be contrasted with the present world aluminum smelting capacity of over five mil-lion tons per year, and a price of about 25 cents per pound.

With profitability pressures in heavy industry increasing, many producers are turning to predictive maintenance as a means of harvesting untapped value from their production assets. Corporations are losing their maintenance and processing core competencies through attrition. As capital budgets are being trimmed, manufacturers are consolidating operating units into fewer, more profitable routes. Maintenance functions, however, typically receive low priority when investment is made, since many companies consider maintenance costs as ?overhead?. Condition-based monitoring, integrated to Level I and Level II process inputs, is seen as the most cost-effective solution to the implementation of predictive maintenance strategies. This paper will review the evolution of preventive and predictive maintenance programs, highlighting examples of successful application of integrated condition monitoring.

"Sometime around 3000 B.C., primitive metallurgists working in the mountainous regions of Asia Minor bordering on the Black Sea (Pontus) produced a soft, easily fused metal today known as lead. It appears certain that the first metal was made by reductive smelting of galena, but whether this recovery arose by the accidental inclusion of galena in the stones of a fire hearth or whether it occurred as a consequence of simple pyrometallurgical experiments on a series of interesting ""stones"" will likely never be known with certainty. The properties of galena, high metallic lustre, great density and facile cleavage, must have excited the ancients, and such ""stones"" would have been the object of primitive testing111 - Shortly after the discovery of lead, the ancients found that the controlled oxidation of this metal at elevated temperatures yielded smaller amounts of a more interesting material, silver. Again, it is uncertain if the production of silver by primitive cupellation techniques was the result of a fireside accident or the consequence of a deliberate experiment, but the important fact is that silver was produced shortly after the discovery of lead. The techniques for making lead and silver spread gradually throughout the entire civilized world, likely as a result of both technology diffusion and independent rediscovery. The physical properties of lead could not have been overly attractive to the ancients, but silver was a different matter altogether. The gleaming white lustre and relative immunity to oxidation quickly assigned silver to the precious materials category, a status it still enjoys. In early times, argentiferous galena was inevitably processed only for its silver values; lead was generally an unwanted byproduct and was frequently discarded as litharge (PbO) during the cupellation process. The silver was eagerly sought, however, and resulted in considerable mining activity culminating in the famous Athenian silver mines at Laurium at the southern end of the Athenian peninsula."

Intelligent Excavation System (IES) has been considered to be one of the desirable solutions to improve the productivity, quality and safety of the current earthwork processes. IES is composed of various hardware and software modules including task planner (work command generator), local and global work environment sensors, GPS and other sensors to acquire the excavator?s status, robotic controller and electronic valves, and the manipulator (excavator). A data communication manager was required to coordinate the signal or data-flow in between these modules considering the operational status of IES such as; excavation start/completion, truck detection, terrain model update, emergency stop, local sensing, GPS/motion sensor data handling, and so on. This paper presents the role and functions of this data communication manager. After every possible operational status of IES operation was identified, a protocol of each communication process in the form of string-type was made. The components of IES are connected with either wired or wireless network. Therefore, they can communicate with the manager using socket (TCP/IP) communication. The data communication manager is also capable of accessing a web-based project management information system, which constantly updates the performance of excavation robot to online database.

"Numerous processes co-exist for metal extraction and for metal removal from effluents of mining operations. Each process enjoys an economic advantage, including environmental cost and benefit, if utilized in a specific situation. This applies equally to biohydrometallurgical processes. This paper will analyze four types of biohydrometallurgical processes for their economic and environmental attributes: biooxidation of refractory gold, extraction of copper from sulfide, metal removal from effluents by active sulfate reduction, and metal removal by the use of wetlands. By examining the economic and environmental advantages of these processes, generalizations can formalized and it becomes possible to define niches of application where biohydrometallurgy can be considered. Our analysis shows that biohydrometallurgy can be efficient at small scale, be more environmentally friendly than conventional technologies and is relatively easier to operate. The higher financial risk associated with unproven technologies at the commercial scale is being eliminated as biotechnology-based plants are put into production.IntroductionBiotechnology can be described as the rational exploitation of the activities of living cells or parts thereof, requiring an integrated multidisciplinary approach between biological and technical disciplines. Microbiology, biochemistry, botany, molecular biology, chemistry and engineering all contribute to practical applications in the extraction, manufacturing and service industries, and in environmental management. Considerable commercial success of biotechnology has been achieved in several sectors, including health care, agriculture, forestry and aquaculture.Over the past 40 years, industry, research organizations, government laboratories, and universities in a large number of countries have participated in investigating the utilization of biotechnology applications in mining. Today, several technologies are used commercially in well understood and engineered systems which can be grouped under the term biohydrometallurgy. Many more technologies have been demonstrated at laboratory or pilot plant scale. Although initial developments and commercial applications were aimed at metal extraction, the dramatic increase in environmental awareness, the practice of sound environmental management demanded by more stringent regulations over the past decade, and the need for low cost treatment in perpetuity, has led to serious investigation of biotechnology for environmental control. In addition, increasing power costs, lowering of ore grades, and decreasing commodity price in real dollar terms require the use of highly efficient and competitive extractive technologies."

GOLD mining in Nova Scotia, as in any other gold district, has its own peculiar problems. Being in close proximity to excellent roads and to railways, and being blessed with good labour, the majority of gold mines in the Province find their paramount trouble is geological, namely, ore finding. After six years of continuous mining at Goldenville, the staff of Guysborough Mines, Limited, has collected many facts, has come to some definite conclusions, and has made a lot of guesses, some good and some bad. It is the purpose of this paper to set down such information as we have been able to gain in the hope that it may prove useful to other operators, present and future, faced with similar problems. What may be true of one Nova Scotian mine will not necessarily be true of another, so that the observations that follow should be considered as primarily applicable to Goldenville. Stated facts, conclusions, and theories are the result of the combined thought and effort of Head Office officials, of members of the Provincial and Federal Departments of Mines, and of members of the mine staff, past and present. "Booster fans play an important role in assisting main fans by boosting the air pressure of the ventilation air passing through it. The correct placement of underground booster fans in a mine is a critical decision since it not only influences the mine’s operational capacity in terms of costs and efficiency, but also affects safety and environmental conditions. There are many booster fan installations around mines that are inappropriate, in some cases resulting in system failure (fan stall) or in a major negative impact on mine production. Inadequate booster fan placement has resulted, in some cases, in extensive air leakage which has compromised the economics of the operation and, in other cases, in recirculation of contaminants which has seriously compromised safety. This paper provides guidelines for proper design and siting of booster fans underground, to not only achieve an economic ventilation system but to create safe work conditions and efficient atmospheric conditions. Procedures for the planning, installation, operation and maintenance of booster fans are also presented. A case study illustrating the design and siting of a major booster fan installation in a potash mine, supported by computational fluid dynamics analysis, is presented.INTRODUCTIONIn large underground operations with complex ventilation networks offering high resistances, the never ending increased required quantities of air can almost only be supplied through use of high pressure main fan systems. These fans may, in effect, induce significant leakage losses in the system, having a negative impact on safety performance. In such cases, booster fans can be designed to decrease the main fan pressures and reduce the leakage flows, improve system efficiency and reduce costs. In well designed systems, booster fans can thus be used to redistribute the airflow and assist the main surface fans.When the pressure supplied by the main fans is insufficient to meet the ventilation circuit pressure requirements, booster fans are placed in strategic locations where pressure boosting is essential. Booster fans are typically sited in sections of the circuit offering high ventilation resistance and requiring this form of ventilating air motivation. Booster fans are thus required when the mine expands, and so the resistance of the ventilation network, and the primary fans no longer can supply the required pressure and flow."

"This paper describes exploration and development to 1982 in the southern half of the northeastern British Columbia (Peace River or Northeast Block) inner foothills metallurgical coal belt. Gates Formation, Fort St. John Group, is the primary target; Gething Formation, Bullhead Group, is secondary. This part of the belt remains wilderness when compared to its other parts. Practical formational and structural mapping is described. A local problem known as the Secus Mountain or Mount Belcourt conglomerates is discussed. The three major explorers have been Denison Mines, PetroCanada, and Crows Nest Resources, all with partners. Initial mine construction and rail spur construction are continuing. The new town of Tumbler Ridge is being built. Introduction This paper describes exploration and development to 1982 in the southern half of the northeast British Columbia metallurgical coal belt. The area (Fig. 1) trends 120 km northwest from the Alberta border to the Wolverine River and Bullmoose Creek. The belt averages 15 km in width, and is 20 km at its widest. Physiographically, the area is dominated by rugged inner foothills, with relief to 1,500 m. The trend of the structures is transected by a dozen rivers flowing southwest to northeast away from the Continental Divide. The Rockies, lying immediately to the west, control the climate. One fact continues to colour all coal work in the area. When compared to the other parts of the western Canadian foothills and Rockies coking belt, it remains the least accessible and least mapped portion. Lack of access also makes all work expensive. Current activity centres about two mines in construction at the northwestern end of the area. Denison Mines and partners are developing their Quintette project, and Teck Corporation and partners are developing their Bullmoose project. PetroCanada and partners have intensively explored their Monkman-Duke Mounta,in project, but mine construction awaits better economic times. The rest of the area remains lightly explored, with the exception of some intensive work on particular structures by Denison and Petro-Canada. The focus of coal work has been metallurgical bituminous coal seams contained primarily in the Gates Formation (Fig. 2) and secondarily in the Gething Formation. These formations are found in generally en-echelon structures ranging to several kilometres in width."

The authors participated in a study for a new mine shaft in Saskatchewan?s Athabasca Basin where ground freezing is desired to reduce water inflows. Constraints were imposed on the design in terms of permissible water leakage (less than 10 m3 / hour) inside the shaft. Since the shaft goes through highly permeable formations, water control measures had to be incorporated into the design. Ground freezing was selected as the most reliable and proven method for the sinking and a hydrostatic liner design was implemented. While exploring various technological options available for providing a fully hydrostatic liner, the authors came up with a new design concept that offers a more cost effective solution while meeting all the design constraints. The new liner concept is a composite design using concrete and a sprayed-on membrane system. A proof of concept program comprising laboratory testing and field testing was successfully implemented. This paper presents the innovative liner design, as well as the adapted sinking methodology, developed for this type of project. The new concept offers a new cost effective high performance hydrostatic mine shaft liner comparing favorably with traditional methods. RESUME: Les auteurs ont réalisé une étude pour un nouveau puits de mine dans le Bassin de l?Athabasca en Saskatchewan. Des limites sévères sont imposées sur le design en terme de volume d?infiltration d?eau acceptable (moins de 10 m3 / heure). Comme ce puits de mine traverse des formations très perméables la congélation des terrains a été sélectionnée, une méthode éprouvée et fiable. Un design hydrostatique a été choisi pour le revêtement du puits. Dans le processus de design, les différentes technologies disponibles ont été étudiées. Les auteurs ont développé un nouveau concept de revêtement composite offrant un rapport performance/prix plus avantageux que les technologies conventionnelles. Le nouveau design proposé est composé de béton et d?une membrane projetée. Un programme expérimental a été réalisé pour démontrer la faisabilité du concept. Cet article présente le nouveau concept ainsi que la méthodologie de fonçage de puits adaptée. Ce concept innovateur offre un revêtement hydrostatique performant à un cout avantageux par rapport aux techniques de construction utilisées jusqu'à maintenant.

"A Ventilation on Demand (VOD) system has been optimized and maintained at Glencore’s Nickel Rim South Mine (NRS) in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada for the past seven years. The system monitors and controls air quality and quantity through real-time, dynamic automation of primary fans, secondary fans, automated airflow regulators, and air monitoring instrumentation with VentSim™ CONTROL, a VOD software. This paper will focus on the implementation of testing procedures and system maintenance methods. Overall, the results show a consistent reduction in energy usage.INTRODUCTIONThe Ventilation on Demand (VOD) system at Glencore’s Nickel Rim South (NRS) mine in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, involves the control of two 2,980 kW centrifugal surface exhaust fans with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), three 335 kW vane-axial surface intake fans with VFDs, 21 automated airflow regulators, six automated dampers, seven automatic doors and 198 underground auxiliary fans with ON/OFF starters. Additionally, the system monitors airflow at 48 locations, carbon monoxide (CO) at 40 locations, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at 21 locations, and dry bulb and wet bulb temperature at 21 locations. The VOD system is also integrated with a tagging and tracking system to modulate the ventilation system automatically and in real time according to the presence and position of the personnel and vehicles. The tracking system comprises of 75 vehicle tags with diesel status and hydraulic status (ON or OFF), 440 personnel tags, and 200 tracking zones. Finally, it also involves the configuration and updating of 55 level plan and interactive procedures and 24 daily scheduled events. NRS currently uses VentSim™ CONTROL, Ekahau Tracking and PI Datalink to control, monitor, and configure their VOD system."

A surface of a magnesium slab (hereinafter, referred to as Mg slab) or magnesium alloy slab (hereinafter, referred to as Mg alloy slab) becomes black with the use of conventional manufacturing methods. The methods also involve a danger that an explosion of the molten magnesium occurs through contact with cooling water. Thus, it has been impossible to produce a slab having a smooth surface. In the present method, a molten magnesium alloy is supplied into a mold, which is sheltered from the surroundings, from a pool in tundish, which is shielded from the surroundings. AZ31B slab formed in the mold is drawn horizontally out to the outside from an outlet of the mold by revolving of the pinch rolls. A cooling water is jetted at an acute angle onto the slab on the outer side of the mold outlet. Further, an inert gas is sprayed at the inner side of the mold outlet in order to seal in a gap between a free surface of the molten magnesium alloy and a sheltered board surrounding an upper surface of the mold. As a result, oxygen and droplets of the cooling water are prevented from running back to the mold side through the gap. AZ31B slab has a smooth surface condition and high quality without a gas porosity, a segregation or the like. Further, the slab has a size of a width of 100 to 120 mm, a thickness of 5 to 20 mm and a span of 10 m or more.

In 2005, we automated a forklift-based Hot Metal Carrier to be capable of typical metal transfer operations around a smelter. The project was highly successful and the vehicle has demonstrated hundreds of hours of live autonomous operations to thousands of people from industry and the public. As a result of the exposure and success of the project, we have expanded its focus to demonstrate how various technology components can be utilised to gain benefits in other areas of industrial operations. These include asset tracking, vehicle usage analysis, pedestrian detection and infrastructure profiling. Each of these components was derived from the core autonomous vehicle technology suite and has shown a high potential for improving safety and efficiency of vehicle-related operations, and improved diagnostic processes for measuring deformations of bakes and furnaces. The autonomous vehicle project and its extended technologies are described in this paper.

"This paper describes the evolution of the Waste Management Program at the Lupin Mine through the years 1982 - 1988. The program was developed in response to the terms and conditions of the Water Licence issued to the mine in 1981 by the Northwest Territories Water Board. Echo Bay Mines Lupin Mine is located on the western shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories about 80 km. south of the Arctic Circle.The gold mine commenced production in 1982 and the Waste Management Program was based originally on the total containment concept. Due to an expansion of the mill circuitry and increased throughput, it was apparent that the total containment concept would require reevaluation since discharge from the pond would be required within a few years. During the initial years of production, an investigative program was established to determine the most effective means for treating the tailings pond water. This program incorporated both laboratory studies as well as monitoring of the tailings pond contents and environmental conditions as the impoundment area was filling. The program showed that natural degradation phenomena, if properly utilized, are effective in lowering the concentrations of all contaminants to within Licence limits with the exception of arsenic. To ensure compliance with arsenic limits, an iron salt was added to cause arsenic to precipitate from solution in the tailings pond.As a result of our studies, the tailings management system finally implemented at Lupin Mine includes the following components:Tailings pulp retention cells constructed by dyking off one end of the tailings impoundment area.Two tailings ponds in series operated in a sequential decant and fill fashion.An iron salt solution preparation and metering system.A syphon system into which the iron salt solution is injected as the contents of the first pond are decanted into the second pond.A second syphon system for decanting the contents of the second pond to the receiving streamThis paper discusses the findings and conclusions of the waste management investigative program, describes the civil work completed to reach our final operating scenario, describes the sequence of operating the treatment system, reviews performance data, and comments on abandonment and restoration of the tailings impoundment area."

In an effort to improve consistency across the nuclear industry, over the past 10 years the Canadian Standards Association has developed a series of standards related to environmental management at Class 1 nuclear facilities and uranium mines and mills. Canadian uranium mines have been required by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to align their existing monitoring programs with these standards. Orano’s McClean Lake Operation’s monitoring program, which was originally presented in the Environmental Impact Statement in 1991, has evolved through regulatory change, new scientific understanding, additional projects, and experience into a comprehensive set of monitoring requirements for effluent, groundwater, air emissions, and the receiving environment. The exercise of aligning the existing practices with the standards provided an opportunity to review and rationalize the entire program. To document the process the original “Environmental Monitoring Program Design Document” was restructured and developed as both a repository for historical information and monitoring rationalization, and also to be a living document describing on-going studies and supplementary work that are outside of the regular environmental monitoring program and may justify future changes to the program.

"Fractures induced by folds are pivotal in hydrocarbon exploration, ground water transport and harnessing of geothermal energy. This is because of the need to predict and understand fracture propagation in reservoirs which have folded rock formations. Despite its prominence, there is a lack of reliable numerical models for simulating fractures resulting from rock folding. This is partially due to the difficulty involved in fracture modelling. As a contribution to fold-fracture modelling, this work applies a coupled plasticity-damage model to rock fracturing and anticlinal folds. Parametric studies on a single folded layer give insight into the fold formation and behaviour. The anisotropic continuum damage model which considers both tension and compression is formulated using the power damage evolution law. For ease in formulation, strain equivalence hypothesis is adopted whereby the strain is the same for both damaged and undamaged configurations. Lubliner plasticity yield criterion is adopted for plastic deformation. The model is coded in Abaqus user subroutine UMAT and is applicable to quasi-brittle materials.INTRODUCTIONThe understanding of fractures in the earth’s crust helps in the prediction, evaluation and characterization of fractured reservoirs, whether they are petroleum, geothermal or underground water reservoirs. This is partly because reservoir permeability and stability are dependent on fracture properties (Nelson, 2001). To achieve this, various approaches have been developed to analyze reservoir rock fractures. These could be grouped into (a) discrete approaches – where the rock mass is represented by a finite number of well-defined components and (b) continuum approaches – where the mathematical assumption of an infinitesimal element is made (Jing, 2003). Ivanova (Ivanova, 1998) comprehensively studied fracture systems in nature and highlighted folds as one of the major geologic settings that produce fractures. Naturally occurring folds in reservoirs sometimes compound fracture analysis. It might not be clear whether the fractures formed before, during or after rock folding. Fractures formed during the folding process are expected to show stress orientations related to folding and are thus of primary concern in rock folding simulation. "The focus of this paper is on the analysis of geometrical discontinuity properties for the rock mass located within an open pit mine located in Western Africa. Discontinuity data were collected using various techniques including oriented core logging, borehole televiewer surveys, surface pit wall mapping and photogrammetry. The geological setting was initially studied prior to the data analysis to produce threedimensional ground models of the regional and mine site geology along with block diagrams illustrating predicted fracture patterns. Stereographic and statistical discontinuity data analysis of the geometrical properties of the rock mass was subsequently performed to identify unique structural domains throughout the open pit area. The discontinuity data collected throughout the studied open pit area were primarily discontinuity orientation, frequency and spacing and the investigation focused on the reasons for observed differences between the various data collection techniques. Stereographic analysis was used to assess the preferred geometry of discontinuities filtered by lithology, data collection technique, borehole, discontinuity type and pit wall (footwall or hanging wall). The observed fracture pattern is explained adequately by the geological setting. The need for accurate ground models for the design of open pit slopes is highlighted.INTRODUCTIONThe Tasiast Mine is an open pit operation located in north-western Mauritania, approximately 300 kilometres north of the capital Nouakchott. The Tasiast mine, which is owned and operated by Kinross Gold Corporation (Kinross), began commercial operations in 2008. The Tasiast mine is located in an area characterized by flat desert terrain within the western reaches of the Sahara Desert region. The current mine site includes mill buildings, shop facilities, waste dumps, tailings facilities and two main open pit operations (Piment and West Branch). The West Branch pit is the focus of this paper. The current open pit plan for West Branch indicates a final pit measuring approximately 2.5 km long by 1.4 km wide and 510 m deep."

This paper, a description of the new ore-unloading and stockpiling facilities at the Sydney Works of DOSCO Steel Limited, deals with a new approach to arrive at the most economical solution to combine ore unloading facilities for common bulk carriers and for different types of self-unloading vessels. Also discussed is the design and installation of a 1-mile-long steel-cord belt conveyor sys-tem with a most modern type of mobile belt conveyor stacker, along with automatic and semi-automatic controls for the entire ship-unloading and stockpiling operations.

This paper looks briefly at some of the agreements and types of royalties that may be met during exploration activities, but does not go into details relating to them. Agreements can either make or break a deal or relationship. A well drafted, comprehensive and fair agreement can create good relations and trust among the parties and will go a long way towards making a deal work. In the best of all worlds the agreement will be put away and not need to be referred to after it has been signed (but it will be there if needed to sort out potential problems). On the other hand, a poorly drafted agreement or one that is inappropriate to the circumstances or unfair to one of the parties can break a deal and end up with the parties facing each other in that expensive, unproductive and time-consuming occupation ? a lawsuit. Accordingly, it is advisable to involve professional advisers with any agreement. The straightforward one may involve no more that a read through whereas the more complex agreement will require considerable involvement. There is, however, one rule for every explorationist to remember: a professional adviser is only an adviser. His responsibility is to make sure that you have the necessary information to make a reasoned decision but the decision is yours, not the adviser?s. It is your deal, you are going to have to live with it, and it is inappropriate for an adviser to introduce new concepts or amend negotiated ones without your specific instructions. Mineral exploration agreements, although basically option, acquisition and joint participation agreements, come in all the shapes and forms, appropriate to give effect to the endless variety of deals negotiated by the ever-active minds of explorationists. You will note the reference to "joint participation agreements" rather than "joint venture agreements". The latter term was purposely avoided because, with the current activity of explorationists from common law jurisdictions in civil law jurisdictions, it has become necessary for the explorationist to become familiar with corporations and shareholders agreements. As most of you are no doubt aware, under the civil law system a joint venture is normally not recognized as a legal entity and, therefore, joint participation in projects is usually by way of corporations.

"Modem aluminum smelters are facing significant operating cost pressure. Key methods used by smelters to manage this pressure are automation and production-information systems to optimize processes, manage quality, anticipate problems and reduce operating costs. In 2002, Aluminerie Alouette Inc. began its Phase II Expansion project, and retained the joint venture of SNC-Lavalin and Hatch (SLH) as its engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) team. Alouette had the distinction of being one of the most efficient aluminum smelters in the world. Alouette already understood the importance of systems integration in project delivery. For Phase II, key objectives were identified to ensure ""a state of the art"" integrated architecture that would support Alouette's production goals to integrate the existing facilities with the expansion, to form a single efficient facility and meet project schedule and budget targets. Achieving those objectives within the context of a large project often creates major challenges due to the nature of the traditional EPCM delivery model, which relies on several vendors and third-party-systems integrators. In this case, an integrated Alouette-SLH team was made responsible for all aspects of the systems integration, taking over the task from most suppliers. The integrated team was responsible for delivering an automation system and plant-wide-production IT system for the new facilities while accommodating migration for the existing systems. Through the use of rigorous methodology and advanced state of the art technology, the IT and automation strategy led to significant value creation and is recognized today as one of the key factors of the project's success. The primary results were: fast and efficient start-up of facilities, due to quality programming and implementation; a plant able to operate as a single entity; automation and IT systems delivered before time and under budget; standard programming methods implemented throughout the plant; and reduced and simplified maintenance."

A possible way to characterize (classify) frothers using gas holdup as a surrogate for bubble size was explored. Nine surfactants with a range in chemical structures were selected and tested in a bubble column instrumented to measure gas holdup and superficial gas velocity. A correlation between frother type and gas holdup was observed: for alcohols, gas holdup increases with hydrocarbon chain length and the effect is the same whether the chain is branched or straight; for polyglycols, gas holdup increased with number of propoxy groups. The ranking by gas holdup gave the same result as other frother characterization techniques.
