Minerales Monclova, S.A. de C.V. (MIMOSA) is owned by Grupo Acerero Del Norte (GAN). This company has 4 underground coal mines and 1 open pit to feed it?s steelmaking facilities located in the city of Monclova in the North of México in the state of Coahuila. The current underground mines are Mine 3, 5, 6 and 7 and the future projects are Mines 8 and 9. In the last years Mines 2 and 4 have been closed because they finished their coal resources. The remaining mines have bigger production and developments requirements in order to accomplish the goals of the company. The mines have been working in deeper and gassier areas. These conditions have required improvements in the ventilation design and methane control systems for all the mines. In some cases the ventilation of some of the MIMOSA?S mines has been increased 80%, and besides this, an intensive methane drainage program has been applied using horizontal in-seam boreholes and gob wells. The short-term ventilation plan includes the construction of 3 new vertical shafts with 5 and 6 meters diameter for Mines 5, 6 and 7 and the purchasing of bigger new main and backup fans for each one of these mines. One of these vertical shafts and the purchasing of the first 2 fans is already in process. This paper will explain the evolution and results of the ventilation and methane drainage systems in MIMOSA and the ventilation planning for the future years.

When it comes to safety in the mining and extractive industries, success is literally a matter of life and death. Anything short of perfection is not acceptable. In recent years, the mining industry in the United States has made tremendous strides in terms of health and safety for its workers. Part of that success has come with an increased focus on the issues of safety, an intense examination of procedures, liberal sharing of best practices and a focus on the synergy between safety, reliability and environment. During his closing keynote address of the Safety Management & System Reliability Conference in Minneapolis, MN on Nov. 15, Joe Driscoll, vice president of Great Basin Gold, showed a calendar from the coal fields in Pennsylvania from the early 1900s. The calendar marked the number of mine-related deaths each month. Some months, the number was as high as 50. It was an illustration of how far things have come, but there is still much more work to be done.

Billions of tons of bulk solid materials are processed through our industrial plants each year, and the tonnage is steadily rising. It has been estimated that for every dollar spent in industry as a whole, approxinlately 30 cents is consumed in the handling of bulk solid materials. It is in this category that tremendous savings are possible through the use of improved techniques. Since World War 11, the mining, steel, chemical, and grain industries, among others have made use of increased materials-handling automation in order to gain some of these savings. However, in a chain of automatic operations, every link must be completely reliable, for if there is a single failure, the whole system immediately becomes ineffective. Only too often the weak link in the chain proves to be the flow of bulk solids from bins. To contribute to the fundamental knowledge in this area, a research study has been continuing at The Ohio State University. The principal objective of the investigation has been to study the internal stresses existing in confined bulk solids. LITERATURE SURVEY Literature studies have revealed that many outstanding people have made contributions to the field of bulk solids. For instance, C. F. Jenkin,1 suggested: a. The pressure on a bin wall is not directly proportional to the depth beneath the surface of material in the bin. b. The vertical pressure distribution on the base of a bin is not actually uniform but is a variable. c. Arches form in bins as a result of very small deformations of the material in the bin. This deformation causes a series of gaps to appear, and consequently causes the disappearance of diagonal forces that cannot act across these gaps. The removal of the diagonal forces causes horizontal forces to be introduced which seem to be the chief cause of arching. 11. A. Janssen,4 in 1895 in connection with his experiments on bins, derived a differential equation to describe both the lateral and vertical pressure in bins with vertical sides. This represents a significant contribution to bulk solid theory, and thus its solution is reproduced as follows: L = KV = RW/U' [l-e -U'KY/R] I where L is the lateral pressure of the bulk solid in psf., V is the vertical pressure of the bulk solid in psf., K is the ratio of the lateral pressure to the vertical pressure at any point, R is the hydraulic radius of the bin in feet, W is the density of the bulk solid in lbs. per cubic feet, U' is the coefficient of friction between the stored material and the bin wall, and Y is the head of material above the point in question in feet. In 1903, Jamieson,6 in an elaborate series of experiments on full sized bins measured vertical and lateral pressures by hydraulic diaphragms. He determined many values for mediums of corn, wheat, peas, and flaxseed. In 1951, Caughey, Tooles, and scheer3 measured both lateral and vertical pressure in deep bins by using strain guages on steel bands. "Bench-scale flotation tests play a major role in the geometallurgical process value chain. Despite their apparent simplicity, these tests pose pitfalls in terms of operation, as well as the interpretation and modelling of results. In this paper we highlight key aspects to consider in generating accurate and reproducible experimental results, and critically review some assumptions relating to the estimation of entrainment and froth recovery. We subsequently focus on first-order equations to model kinetics and propose a method that accounts more realistically for the decay in kinetics over the duration of a float, and the contributions of froth stability and hence mass pull. The method was applied to three case studies on platinum group metal (PGM) ores and matched or outperformed first-order, two-component models. Also, it allows for a deeper analysis of the integrity of the bench-scale flotation results. IntroductionGeometallurgy is a structured, multidisciplinary approach that integrates key data from the geological, mining, mineralogical, and metallurgical aspects of the value chain to construct spatial models of an ore deposit such that the overall economic benefit and sustainability of an operation can be optimized. Process geometallurgy is aimed primarily at enhancing metallurgical efficiency and plant throughput by the application of appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as supporting production planning and operational strategies to reduce the impact of highly variable ores. With flotation being the dominant concentrating process in the mineral value chain, the bench-scale flotation test is an important characterization tool – a relatively cheap, simple, and rapid way to obtain key information about the ore and its amenability to economic extraction of valuable minerals. This includes the evaluation of different ore types and the implications of mineralogical composition and texture for comminution and floatability, the effect of the grinding environment on the liberation of minerals, the electrochemical environment in the pulp (Bradshaw et al., 2006), the screening of reagents to improve floatability (Ekmekci et al., 2003), and the role of hydrodynamics in the recovery of valuables and the entrainment of gangue (Amini et al., 2016; Wang et al., 2016). It is also a critical tool in auditing the performance of a flotation plant by hot floats, paving the way for concept and feasibility studies and providing essential data on kinetics for the purposes of scale-up, optimization, and simulation of flotation circuits."

The Manapouri Power Station is New Zealand’s largest hydroelectric facility located on the South Island of New Zealand. Constructed in the 1960’s, it includes a 700 MW under-ground power station and a 9.8 km (6.1 mile), 9.2 m (30 ft) diameter tailrace tunnel. The output of the power station is currently limited due to excessive head losses in the tailrace tunnel. To remedy this situation, the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand (ECNZ) retained Woodward-Clyde to design a second tailrace tunnel and appurtenant facilities and prepare Contract Documents for construction. The Project will involve the construction of a 9.8 km(6.1 miles), 10 m (33 ft) diameter, TBM-mined tunnel, hydraulic control structures at the upstream and downstream ends of the tunnel, an underground dewatering shaft and station, and tailrace channel improvements. This paper summarizes the key design and construction issues addressed during the planning and design phases, outlines the risk management provisions incorporated in the Contract, and overviews the Interactive Tender Process (ITP)that was implemented during the pre-tendering and tendering periods.

Expert control of grinding and flotation plants has been successfully used in the minerals industry since the 1970?s. The earliest of these systems were written in a hard-coded fashion in FORTRAN, BASIC or Pascal. Second generation systems were built using the first experimental expert system shells that were being developed in the artificial intelligence community. Later systems were deployed in expert system shells designed for real-time processing plants that also included the ability to model the process with neural network models and optimize setpoint selection through the use of genetic algorithms. Significant performance increases have been achieved using these systems, but in general, they suffer from the static nature of their rules and to a degree the process models also. Typical improvements quoted in the literature suggest throughput rate increases of 4 to 8 percent and recovery increases of 1 to 4 percentage points. In over 30 years of designing and installing expert systems we have never seen performance numbers less that these but have often seen numbers in excess of the high values. However, once the system has been installed and tuned up the performance usually does not improve much thereafter. Granted, the initial increases in throughput rate and recovery are significant but a question always lingers, that is, can the expert strategies be modified further to squeeze a little more improvement out of the system. The answer to this question is a resounding yes, however a complete understanding of what we do well as designers and operators of expert control systems is required as well as how we can improve upon our best practices is required to move us from the performance plateau we have been on for a number of years to a new higher level of performance.

The methodology of quarrying changed significantly in the Indiana limestone industry in the 60 years between Sept. 11, 1941 and Sept. 11, 2001. The former was the date of the Pentagon groundbreaking ceremony, while the latter was when the building was damaged by American Airlines Flight 77. So too, though to a lesser degree, did the machinery and methods used to fabricate the stone. The rededication ceremony on Sept. 11, 2002 marked the end of the Phoenix Project, as the rebuilding effort was named. The story of this remarkable project illustrates what the American construction(and Indiana limestone) industry can accomplish when working toward a common goal.

"In an opencast mine explosives are used for fragmentation of rock. Inefficient use of explosive energy in an opencast operation produces excessive ground vibration, which is measured by peak particle velocity (PPV). To mitigate ground vibration, it is essential to develop a model to predict PPV. At present empirical models are used. These models are based on only a few input variables, hence they fail to take into account the effects of the myriad factors that cause ground vibration. Due to lack of explicit knowledge about the complex mine blasting system the scope of application of mathematical and statistical modeling techniques is limited. The artificial neural network (ANN) technique is a learning algorithm that can remove some of these limitations and can be applied to predict PPV. In this paper an ANN model is developed for prediction of blast vibration using 248 data records collected from three coal mines with diverse geomining conditions. The correlation coefficient between measured PPV and model output was found to be 0.96 and the average error percentage 11.85. The ANN model output was compared with the output of three empirical models that are widely used for prediction of PPV. The correlation coefficient between the PPV predicted by an empirical model and measured PPV data was 0.63 and the relative error percentage 38.47. This result demonstrates the superiority of the ANN model compared to empirical blast models. By using site-specific structural discontinuities as input the model performance can be further improved. Sensitivity analysis and 3D plotting were used to gain further knowledge about blast-induced ground vibration. IntroductionIn an opencast coal mine explosives are used for fragmentation of coal and overburden. If the explosive energy is not fully utilized it causes blast-induced ground vibration, which may damage nearby structures. Ground vibration is expressed as peak particle velocity (PPV). During different stages of mine planning and operation, it is necessary to use a ground vibration prediction model for blasthole design. Selection of the modelling technique is crucial. Mathematical and statistical modelling techniques have limited application because of the lack of explicit knowledge about the complex mine blasting system. Vogiatzi (2002) highlighted the problem of multicollinearity in case of statistical modeling techniques. Mutalib et al. (2013) stated that mathematical models are unable to capture the nonlinear relationship between several blasting-related parameters due to the complexity of the model input data. However, the difficulty involved in modelling complex blast vibration problems can be removed by adopting an alternative soft computing modelling approach. One of the soft computing techniques is the artificial neural network (ANN). Ragam and Nimaje (2018) developed an ANN model for predicting PPV using six input variables. Kosti et al. (2013) stated that the conventional predictors fail to provide acceptable prediction accuracy. They showed that a neural network model with four mine blast parameters as input could make significantly more accurate on-site predictions. Sayadi et al., (2013), using a database from Teheran Cement Company limestone mines, found that a neural network resulted in maximum accuracy and minimum error. Khandelwal and Singh (2009) developed an ANN model using 150 data records from an Indian coal mine with site-specific rock characteristics and geomining setting. Khandewal and Singh (2007) built a ground vibration prediction model for a magnesite mine using four prediction variables with 20 data records. Kamali and Ataei (2010) predicted PPV in the structure of the Karoun III power plant and dam using an ANN. El Hafiz et al. (2010) evaluated ground vibration predictors using data from a single-station seismograph at a limestone quarry in Egypt."

"In November 1942, a preliminary report on the Swartz Mining District by John H. Soule, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, recommended an exploratory program of diamond drilling. The existence of zinc and lead deposits in this region had been known for many years. In 1943 and 1944, the Federal Geological Survey made a detailed study of the same area. Later work done by the Bureau of Mines in this district followed the suggestions made by these geologists.3/In the latter part of 1944, Felix A. Vogel, Jr., another Bureau engineer, made a study of the Grey Eagle mine in the Kingston Mining District, a few miles northeast of the Swartz district, and his recommendations for diamond drilling were followed in so far as funds permitted. Drilling was started in October 1943 and was completed in June 1945.4/In its program of exploration of Mineral deposits, the .Bureau of Mines 'Ms as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution t national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples of ore and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.With respect to this report, special acknowledgment for assistance is due to C. H. Johnson, chief of the Rolla Division, Mining Branch, and to various members of the Geological Survey."

This paper demonstrates use of remotely sensed imagery in promoting sustainable mining. Remote sensing technology can be used during all phases of a mining project û from evaluating the resource, to making extraction more cost-effective, through to monitoring, mine closure and remediation. Use of the new generation of satellite platforms with the capability of acquiring satellite data with higher spectral and spatial resolution have the capability to emerge as essential indicator for sustainable development in the minerals industry. A life cycle approach to satellite imagery is discussed. The use of an imagery of the site prior to mining activity establishes the environmental baseline, guides mitigation measures and eventual help in suggesting remediation. Remote imagery provides the cost-effective means of monitoring reclamation, including the growth of planted vegetation, of the mine site and surrounding area. The latest advancements in satellite remote sensing are highlighted to meet the newer challenges of sustainable mining practices. Some of the worldwide successful remote sensing applications for the measurement and evaluation of the sustainable development impact of mining operations are described. Presently available source of imagery and its comparative advantages and disadvantages are provided as a guide. Finally, the limitations of this tool are indicated.

The twenty-ninth Sir Julius Wernher memorial lecture of the IMM, presented at Tunnelling '97, London, 2-4 September 1997. The tunnelling industry is well prepared to face the challenge from the population explosion in urban areas in the near future. Many well-established yet redundant concepts are still impeding progress, however, including the prediction of excessive surface ground settlements. The correct selection of TBM can minimise these, and ground deformations can be avoided completely if the appropriate techniques are applied. Advanced techniques have been used in the Tokyo Bay Crossing, where the tunnel lining was installed by robots. Other advanced techniques include the use of a sliding slip form to give temporary support to an extruded tunnel lining, the chemical processing of ground by polymers during earth-pressure balanced tunnelling and the use of electronic monitoring and steering devices in TBMs. There will be challenges to tunnelling in urban environments, as open cut techniques will no longer be tolerated. "A major shortcoming of the statistical back-analysis of coal pillar strength is that it relies on the asmined pillar dimensions, not taking into account time-related pillar scaling with subsequent reduction in pillar width. The paper describes an investigation where the rate of pillar scaling was applied to the pillars in the databases of failed and unfailed pillars. The reduced pillar sizes were then used in the same method of statistical back-analysis that had been used in the past.This resulted in an equation for pillar strength which predicts significantly greater pillar strength than the previous statistical analyses, which is similar to the strength which had been found earlier by direct testing of large specimens underground. It is concluded that the lower strengths found by previous statistical analyses are due to the incorrect pillar width being used and that by adjusting the pillar sizes to compensate for scaling, more credible results that correspond to direct testing are obtained.As the newly derived strength equation is time-dependent, it follows that the safety factors and probabilities of failure are likewise time-dependant. An equation to determine the probability of failure is also developed. This results in the safety factor being close to unity at a probability of failure of 50%, which is aligned to statistical expectation. IntroductionSince the Coalbrook mine disaster, caused by massive pillar collapse, there have been several attempts at analysing and defining the strength of coal pillars. It was realized in the very beginning that performing classical strength tests on coal specimens in a laboratory and then transferring those results to real coal pillars could not be successful. The scatter of results is one problem and, more seriously, there is a size effect (at least for small specimens) that made the transformation of strength results to much larger coal pillars underground all but impossible.Two main schools of thought then emerged. Some researchers preferred to perform direct strength tests on large specimens underground, while others relied on statistical back-analysis of failed and unfailed pillar cases, attempting to determine the differences in size and shape that would allow a satisfactory prediction of failure. The latter school of thought resulted in the method that was widely accepted by the South African coal mining industry, described in the landmark publication by Salamon and Munro (1967)."

The request for proposal from the U.S. Bureau of Mines outlined the purpose of this study in the following terms. "High grade near surface deposits are largely a matter of history. Most of the current mineral production in the united States is from large low grade ore deposits mined by large scale methods. It appears likely that exhaustion of near surface deposits and public resistance to open pit mining will tend to reverse the present trend toward open pit mining and lead to increased reliance on large scale underground mining. In view of the long lead time needed to improve basic technology, an in-depth study of the major underground mining methods is needed. "This study is intended to provide a systematic review and analysis of large scale non-coal underground mining technology with particular emphasis on current practices and problems, needed technological improvements, existing or potential environmental conflicts, and possible modifications or innovations that will assist in the satisfaction of projected national mineral supply requirements."

Ductile hafnium was not obtained consistently by the conventional Kroll process. The bimetal reduction modification produced a more ductile hafnium by lowering the impurities, especially oxygen, in the sponge metal. Hafnium oxide was chlorinated in the presence of carbon to form anhydrous hafnium tetrachloride, which was reduced by sodium and magnesium in an inert atmosphere to produce sponge hafnium metal. After vacuum distillation to remove the byproducts, the sponge was arc-melted into ingot and rolled into strip. Metallic impurities were decreased by evaporating the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused salt. An excessive amount (over 1,200 parts per million (p.p.m.)) of aluminum was contained in some of the hafnium oxide, much of which remained as aluminum chloride in the hafnium tetrachloride during chlorination. Evaporation of the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused NaCI-KCI mixture during the Mg-Na reduction greatly lowered its aluminum content, as most of the aluminum and some of the other metallic impurities were retained by the fused salt.

This paper presents the processes of investigation, analysis, design, construction and monitoring of soil nail stabilisation work to facilitate a 14.5 m deep excavation at an uncontrolled fill ground. An extensive instrumentation programme had been implemented to monitor the performance of the stabilisation solution, to provide validation for the designed nail resistance and groundwater variation. From the monitoring results, it was proved that the soil nail stabilisation technique is effective for loose saturated fill provided that substantial care is taken during implementation. Construction difficulties, solutions to overcome the problems and lessons learned will be discussed in the paper.

Rock mass classification systems are extensively used in rock engineering design work, and mine design is no exception. Among the systems most widely used for mining-related design work are the NGI 0-system (Barton et al., 1974), the RMR system (Bieniawski, 1976), the MRMR system (Laubscher and Taylor, 1976) and, more recently, the GSI system (Hoek et al., 1998). Classifying the rock mass is widely seen as being the fieldwork required to characterize the rock mass and enable the application of empirical design methods associated with the different classification systems. This paper argues that it is fundamentally important to recognize the distinction between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification. These two processes should, in most cases, be separated from each other. Rock mass characterization should be used to determine the intrinsic properties of the rock mass independently of the application; i.e. independent from the infrastructure to be designed, the size, shape, and orientation of the excavation(s) or pillar(s), etc. Rock mass characterization should also be compatible with most classification systems and empirical design methods to be used. Rock mass characterization is the background fieldwork required to perform rock mass classification and/or engineering design work. Rock mass classification is the subsequent step to the characterization, and an integral part of the design process. Parameters that vary according to the design, such as the relative orientation of geological structures compared to the opening or the mine-induced stresses, should be calculated as part of the rock mass classification and design process, rather than during the rock mass characterization process. The failure to distinguish between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification can lead to major design errors and poor results.

Economic and at the same time environmentally acceptable mining of small vertical ore bodies and veins to great depths has always been a challenge for miners. The Bauer cutter system, widely used in civil engineering, has been further developed for applications in exploration and mining, to a sustainable system for selective mining with a focus on small vertical ore bodies and veins, as well as residual ore in open pit operations. Current situation of conventional mining of small ore bodies and vertical veins Small ore bodies and vertical or near-vertical ore veins often pose a challenge to the mining industry. The relatively small size of the ore deposit over great depths or lengths, with only limited exposure to the surface makes economical mining difficult. Open pit mining of such ore bodies must either be terminated early because of the high stripping ratio and the enormous environmental impact or is unprofitable from the very beginning. The required massive stripping of waste rock leads to high material hauling times and costs, intensive roadway and bench construction and maintenance, possible safety hazards due to heavy vehicle movement, pit wall stability risks, intensive surface water management and massive waste dump requirements. In addition, it can be assumed that increasingly extensive rehabilitation measures will be required in the future after mine closure. Particularly in vertically oriented magmatic and hydrothermal deposits the technical, economic and environmental limits for further pushbacks, to extend the open pit depth, can lead to an early end of mine life even if a significant quantity of residual ore is left behind. Going underground is only a viable option in a limited number of mines with very high ore values and volumes. The high development cost of an underground mine, as well as the higher underground mining costs, often prevent further mining to greater depths.

Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

"Few issues are more important to the National Mining Association (NMA), the U.S. mining industry and NMA’s MINExpo International 2016 exhibitors than safety.Global mining safety and health is a journey necessitating continuous improvement, collaboration and innovation on the part of both mining operators and their suppliers.MINExpo 2016, which takes place Sept. 26- 28, 2016, in Las Vegas, provides attendees with the opportunity to view technologies to help refine management of mining safety and health, utilizing NMA’s CORESafety system. CORESafety ‘One of the best’Launched by NMA in 2011 and moving forward ever since, CORESafety is driving continuous improvement in safety and health performance among participating industry companies by shifting from a command-andcontrol regulatory approach to a risk-based systems approach built on the Plan-Do-Check-Act model (Fig. 1).Considered an exemplary safety and health management system, NMA’s CORESafety system helps mining operators change their approach to safety and health management by enhancing the safety and health culture throughout their organizations. Although it is challenging to consistently and completely control all the factors and variables occurring in daily mining operations, experience has shown that applying systematic controls to as many variables as possible is the most successful approach for improvement in mining safety and health.When embarking upon the development of the CORESafety framework, NMA’s leadership set an ambitious goal to eliminate fatalities and reduce the injury rate 50 percent in five years, or the “0-50-5” goal. While the goal has not been met yet, the steady progress has been extraordinary with fatalities among participating companies dropping 45 percent during the period 2011-2015 (Fig. 2). Data also demonstrate that, as participating companies increase their level of implementation, total injury rates have also declined (Fig. 3).In a September 2015 interview with NMA, Penn State University mining engineering Professor Jeffrey Kohler praised CORESafety as “an inspired and timely program that brings together key elements to achieve safety and health goals.”"
