"In February 2018, drawn in part by the states’ proud mining heritage, SME took its Annual Conference & Expo to Minneapolis, MN for the first time. More than 5,000 people and 554 exhibitors converged on the Minneapolis Convention Center for three days of networking, exhibiting and technical sessions.The state’s mining legacy, one that continues today, is fueled in large part by its vast iron ore resources in the northern part of the state. The historical significance of the mines in the Mesabi Range, otherwise known as the Iron Range north of Lake Superior, cannot be understated. “Mining is a way of life here,” said U.S. Congressman Rick Nolan of Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District. A native of the Iron Range, the three-term U.S. congressman was one of the featured speakers of the opening keynote session. “We like to think we contribute enormously to the well-being of this country and the world. We were the source of the iron ore and steel that helped win two world wars. And we like to think that we are part of the progress that has taken place in the United States ever since.” Nolan kicked off the keynote sessionthat focused on innovation and its part in the mining industry. The session included Rene Aquilar, vice president of corporate affairs and sustainability, Antofagasta Minerals Group; Bob Anderson, vice president for research and development, 3M; Rolf Weberg, executive director, Natural Resources Research Institute, University of Minnesota-Duluth and Christopher Beck, executive vice president and president, Nalco Water. The panel session looked at U.S. and global minerals production, and the importance of the United States to maintain a major role in the minerals industry, both as a producer and as a technology leader. The panel also touched on the global mining industry and the issues that impact mining around the world. Sustainability, the use of water in mining and earning a social license to operate were among the topics discussed by the panel.Speaking of the importance of mining, Nolan conceded that talking about the benefits of mining to the crowded auditorium at the SME conference might be akin to a preacher speaking to the choir, but, following the adage that all politics are local, he continued to illustrate his point by emphasizing the importance of mining to the Great Lakes.“A study by Homeland Security concluded that 13 percent of the nation’s GDP comes out of Lake Superior through the locks at Sault Ste. Marie and most of that is iron ore,” said Nolan. “That study found that, if those locks fail, it would create a national depression. It would put millions of people out of work. That ore and those minerals supply the steel mills, the auto industry, the heavy industrials. They are the heart of our economy. The study concluded that if the states that make up the Great Lakes were a nation, it would be the fourth largest economy in the world.”"

This paper presents real time photoacoustic measurements of diesel-soot black-carbon (BC or EC) and Dusttrak nephelometer total carbon (TC) concentrations in a Nevada gold mine. Comparisons with time-integrated filter-based measurements of EC and TC accomplished using the NIOSH 5040 method were found to be 50% smaller than the integrated real time measurements. This work was initiated primarily as a demonstration project for the usefulness of photoacoustic instruments in measuring BC in the mine environment. Real time black carbon measurements are very useful for determining miner exposure, for providing feedback in mine ventilation systems, and for quantifying machine specific emission rates to understand the operating conditions for specific machines that produce greatest black carbon concentrations. This paper reports real time measurements of DPM from a loaded and empty hauler as it is operated in a drift with a 12% grade. The photoacoustic instruments were demonstrated to be satisfactory for BC measurements in the mine environment.

The Biwabik Iron Formation is a ~1.9 billion year-old sequence of iron-rich sedimentary rocks that was metamorphosed at its eastern- most extent by ~1.1 billion year-old intrusions of the Duluth Complex. The metamorphic recrystallization of iron-formation locally produced iron-rich amphiboles and other fibrous iron-silicate minerals. The presence of these minerals in iron-formation along the eastern part of what is known as the Mesabi Iron Range, and their potential liberation by iron mining has raised environmental health concerns. We describe here the geologic setting and mineralogic composition of the Biwabik Iron Formation in and adjacent to the contact metamorphic aureole of the Duluth Complex. The effects of metamorphism are most pronounced within a few kilometers of the contact, and decrease progressively away from it. The contact aureole has been divided into four metamorphic zones?each characterized by the composition and crystal structure of the metamorphic minerals it contains. The recrystallization of iron-formation to iron-rich amphibole minerals (grunerite and cummingtonite) and iron-pyroxene minerals (hedenbergite and ferrohypersthene) is best developed in zones that are most proximal to the Duluth Complex contact. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. In April 1997, Kiewit/Parsons Brinckerhoff (K/PB) completed the 7,600-m (25,000-ft) primary access tunnel for the Yucca Mountain, NV proposed high-level nuclear waste site. K/PB then began boring an exploratory east-west cross drift tunnel at the site. The 2,681-m (8,796-linear ft)East-West Cross Drift Tunnel was excavated through volcanic tuffs having zones of incompetent rock using a rebuilt Robbins 5-m (16.4-ft)hard-rock tunnel boring machine(TBM) with a special arrangement of supporting equipment. This portion of the Yucca Mountain project was completed in eight months.

The abstract discusses the importance of predicting fire response time (the time before conditions become untenable for firefighters) in underground coal mines. It introduces a data-driven approach using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict response time and fire size based on measurable parameters like CO concentration, mine geometry, air velocity, and time since fire detection. The approach was tested using simulations from fire models (FDS and FSSIM), showing promising results for real-time predictions during mine fires.

In responding to mine fires and explosions, accurate and timely analysis of the mine atmosphere is critical in making decisions regarding firefighting, mine rescue and mine recovery operations. For many years instantaneous analyses were available to rescue workers using handheld or portable gas detection equipment, including infrared, electrochemical, or catalytic measuring devices for a limited number of specific gases such as oxygen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Instantaneous sensing technology is not available for all gases, such as nitrogen and hydrocarbons, found in a mine fire atmosphere and cross-sensitivity can be a problem with this technology. For these reasons, air samples are collected for injection into a gas chromatograph for a complete and accurate analysis for all gases including oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, as well as ?fire gases? such as hydrogen, ethylene, ethane, and acetylene. This method requires additional time for transporting the samples to the laboratory near the mine, as well as an instrument operator to inject the samples for analysis. The use of a portable micro gas chromatograph with a continuous and automatic injection system has been implemented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) during mine recovery operations. The device directly samples the mine atmosphere from an underground location every twelve minutes and automatically analyzes the samples for all of the mine fire gases. The portable unit utilizes micro technology and the operating software has been modified to perform the calculation of sample results in and Excel® spreadsheet without user interaction. This paper describes the micro gas chromatograph system and its use at a recent mine recovery operation. The automated remote operation of the micro gas chromatograph has been shown to be a good alternative to infrared and electrochemical sensors used for mine atmosphere analysis.

Abstract An extensive drilling and laboratory testing program indicates that a construction aggregate resource is present within the Oligocene Sombrerito Formation limestone, southwestern Dominican Republic. The first part of the testing program included the collection, photographing and geologic logging of diamond drill cores to allow lithologic subdivision of the strata into potential quarry layers. The primary lithostratigraphic units are: I- (youngest) approximately 10 m of white, dense marine limestone II-approximately 5 m of white, interbedded dense and chalky marine limestone III-more than 2 m of tan, chalky, calcitic dolomite. Unit I is often altered by lateritic weathering and/or dolomitization. Unit II is often altered by dolomitization. The cores were individually crushed by quarry layer into coarse and fine aggregate sizes for chemical and physical analyses: specific gravity and absorption, MgSO4 soundness, sand equivalent, Atterberg limits of the minus #40 mesh fraction, and LA degradation. The unaltered portion of Unit I is suitable for all construction aggregate uses. Unit II is best suited for crushed stone base. Each of the non-weathered units decreases in coarse-aggregate yield and quality with depth and diagenetic dolomitization. Dolomitization typically causes about 5% lower yield of coarse aggregate, a sand equivalent of about 20 units below the original value an increase in absorption of about 3%, an increase in the LA of up to 13%, and a decrease in the average five-cycle MgSO4 soundness of about 17%.

The reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In such a process quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?O(CH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of hematite does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the flotation efficiency of iron ore flotation by use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, i.e., GP clay binder. It is postulated that the GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It is further theorized that the clay binder helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating ability to iron ion. The results from this study clearly show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing concentrate grade to 67.08% and iron recovery to 78.15% simultaneously. The commercial extraction of metals from manganese nodules on an industrial scale requires more than 50% of the investment necessary to realize manganese nodule mining. This is mainly due to the fact that a completely new metallurgical processing scheme for the extraction of both base metals (Ni, Cu, Co) and high-tech metals (Mo, Li, Ga) has to be developed and upgraded to industrial scale. There are a number of conventional processing technologies that combine hydro- and pyro-metallurgical approaches such as the INCO and CUPRION processes which have been developed in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, new approaches based on selective leaching with chelating agents and bioleaching try to minimize energy consumption and waste production. All of these extraction methods require knowledge how the metals are structurally bound in the manganese oxides. In this contribution we will review the current knowledge about the mineralogy of iron and manganese minerals in the different marine oxide deposits, present our results, and discuss the possible consequences for metal extraction.

Korean contract Mn-nodule field in the NE equatorial Pacific is composed of seven sectors showing average water depths of 4,513 - 5,025 m. Of the various factors controlling the property of Mn-nodules, water depth has a potential linkage to chemical composition, shape and abundance of nodules. To clarify such a possibility, we review more than 20 years of research data in one of the northern sectors (hereafter KR1) where there is a marked contrast in water depth. High-resolution seabed mapping clearly separates a northern part from a deeper southern part, cutting across the middle of the KR1. In terms of nodule occurrence, manganese nodules in the deeper north are comparatively larger (2-4 cm) with rough surface (t-type) and discoidal shape (D-type), while those in the south are generally small (<2 cm) with smooth surface (s-type) and irregular shape (Itype). In addition, the nodules in the north have higher metal contents including Cu, Mn and Ni. Such connections of water depths to nodule occurrence and metal contents are commonly observed in the Korea licensed Pacific nodule fields. However, the relation between nodule abundance, size and water depth may be a different story. In KR1, nodule abundance and size are probably controlled by morphological features especially in the north. Seamounts in the north continuously provide rock fragments as new nuclei for the nodules. As a result, the nodules can not grow larger than 2 cm and show the shapes of newly formed nodules (i.e., smooth surface and irregular shapes). Such an interpretation is supported by anomalously high backscattered intensities in the side-scan sonar image map of the north, which possibly reflects a younger generation of magmatic activity.

Natural aggregates, primarily stone, sand and gravel, are recovered from widespread, naturally occurring mineral deposits and processed for use primarily in the construction industry. They are mined, crushed, sorted by size, and sold either loose or in concrete products to build roads, houses, buildings, and other structures. Smaller quantities are used in agriculture, cement manufacture, and industries employing chemical and metallurgical processes. The growth of cities, their buildings and the highways that connect them have created demand for enormous quantities of aggregates. The aggregates industry is the largest mining industry in the United States in terms of production by weight, volume and by number of active operations.

Mine worker exposure to respirable coal dust and silica dust can result in coal workers’ pneumoconiosis and silicosis which are occupational respiratory diseases that have no cure and are ultimately fatal. In 2021 the Mine Safety and Health Administration reported just over 11,000 operating metal/nonmetal mines with the potential for silica dust exposure for just under 200,000 miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts respirable coal and silica dust research associated with mining through its Office of Mine Safety and Health Research. NIOSH respirable coal and silica dust research began under the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), which initially examined silica dust, progressing to include coal dust, with a stronger focus after 1969 with the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. A review of extramural research to develop real-time respirable silica dust monitor is presented along with a brief history of silica dust regulation.

The Wyoming bentonite industry continued its run of stable, if not strong, growth in its complex markets. Growth at the macroscale was fueled by a strong domestic economy, the weakening of the U.S. dollar in the global market and strong worldwide global demand. Challenges to the benchmark of the industry were rapid and saw ongoing increases in raw material costs(pallets, bags and additives), higher energy costs and higher overall transportation costs for all modes of movement. Exports continued to be assisted by dollar depreciation (5 percent to 10 percent) from January 2004to January 2005. This depreciation followed the significant weakening of 2003. And it was most favorable during the pullback in fuel and shipping rates in the second half of the year.

The Eskay Creek Mine is a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia. The mine started operations in late1994. For the first three years, ore was crushed to -50 mm(-2 in.), blended to satisfy smelter terms and shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Preliminary evaluations indicated that a complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. So markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations began at a production rate of 300 t/d (330stpd).

There is no doubt that simulated ventilation networks must be adequately verified before they can be extrapolated and used for predictive purposes. There are two general approaches as to how the verification can be established and these are summarised as follows; The first approach is to measure all individual branches with trailing hoses or barometers to get individual pressure drop and flow per branch and then calculate individual resistance factors for input into the software. The simulator is run, checking that the output makes general sense (check some sensitivities if possible). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure drop to be measured is relatively small and thus it is inherent that the measured set of individual K factors will be imprecise no matter how much care is taken in the measurements and the resultant simulations will inherit the same problem. In the second approach, the network is assembled using estimated (Atkinson) K factors (based on physical features of airway, past experience and catalogued typical K factors). Only the main primary flow rates are measured and hence the relative distribution of the primary ventilation in the main airways is determined (probably about 10 off primary air flow measurements). Main critical pressure differentials at main and booster fans and across critical doors are measured (probably about 6 off primary pressure differential measurements need to be made). The simulator is run and the computer model is used to iterate and select an updated suite of K factors so that the flow balances and pressure differentials are correctly simulated (typically only 2 or 3 iterations are all that is needed). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure differences to be measured will be substantial in absolute terms and can be measured with high precision. Also, because only primary flows are measured, these will generally be measured at higher air speed points and hence improved relative accuracy. This leads to more accurate simulation results. Four companies mined ball clay in four States during2004. They were H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Franklin Minerals) Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys),Old Hickory Clay and Unimin. Production was estimated to be 1.46 Mt (1.61 million st) valued at about $56.9 million, based on a preliminary survey of the ball clay industry. In 2003, production was 1.31 Mt (1.44 million st) valued at $56.2 million. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 61 percent of production. It was followed by Texas, Kentucky and Mississippi.

Mining is a significant emitter of greenhouse gases and is the focus of increasing attention from green groups and regulators. Miners need to know their own carbon emissions and how they compare with the rest of the industry. Miners and mining companies need to know where they fit in the emissions curve. Who is in the bottom quartile? This article updates data from minecost.com which detail the specific carbon dioxide emissions for over 200 mines producing 90% or more of western world copper, zinc, lead and nickel in 2009. This data shows the potential impact on mine economics of proposed carbon taxation regimes and emissions trading schemes proposed at COP 15 in Copenhagen during December.

Ventilation planning in trackless metal mining is often taken for granted. This paper highlights the trials of planning and executing the ventilation design for Bog Zone at the Lisheen Mine. Ventilation planning for Bog Zone started at the feasibility study stage in 2003; subsequent design changes continued until 2006. In August 2006, the development of the Bog Zone ore body was accelerated through the use of contractors; in addition, the Lisheen equipment fleet was revised based on a larger load and haul fleet. As a result, the circuit was reviewed in terms of changes in design conditions and best practices. This review resulted in a 40% increase of total airflow required to mine Bog Zone. Resources utilized to design the circuit include: external review, computer modeling, and in-house Lisheen planning and operational staff review. The final ventilation design configuration was adopted in 2007, after modeling and evaluating 30 different scenarios, resulting in a better distribution of airflow, optimized secondary escape way, reduced contaminants, and a total power reduction. The value of investment in computer modeling of primary ventilation circuit and planning for staged implementation should never be underestimated.

The Swiss are currently building the world’s longest tunnel, the 35-mile long Gotthard Base Tunnel. At Sedrun, for the first time in tunneling, four Roadway Support Machines will drive through most difficult ground, supporting variable diameters of up to 13 m. The machines are prepared for their first deployment. At Amsteg, two Hard Rock TBMs have successfully crossed a known fault zone by applying full circle steel arches and shotcrete immediately behind the cutter head. Comparisons between Drill& Blast and Hard Rock TBM are shown.

On behalf of ME readers, the editors thank them.During the past 25 years, U.S. ball clay production (the quantity sold or used by domestic producers) increased from 788 kt (869,000 st) in 1990 to an alltime high of 1.31 Mt (1.44 million st) in 2003 (Fig. 1). Housing construction within the United States, a leading market for ball clay-based ceramics and sanitaryware, began to decline in 2005, which resulted in a considerable decrease in sales of ball clay that continued through the 2008-2009 economic recession. After bottoming out at 831 kt (916,000 st) in 2009, ball clay production steadily increased through 2015 (Fig. 1). Estimated sales in 2015 were 36 percent higher than those in 1990 and 18 percent lower than those in 2003.Four companies (H.C. Spinks Clay Co., Imerys S.A., Old Hickory Clay Co., and Unimin Corp.), mined ball clay in five states during 2015. An estimated 1.7 Mt (1.18 million st) of ball clay valued at an estimated $47.5 million was sold or used by U.S. producers, a 4-percent increase from 1.03 Mt (1.14 million st) valued at $45.2 million in 2014. Approximately 65 percent of total ball clay production was air-float, 25 percent was crude or shredded and 10 percent was water-slurried"
