"The Cannon Mine, a joint venture between Asamera Minerals (the operator) and Breakwater Resources, is located in the centre of Washington state at the eastern base of the Cascade Mountains. The mine complex is located three blocks south of the city limits of Wenatchee, part of an urban area with a total population of 47 000. The closest residence is 350 feet from the mine portal.The B-Neath zone is a narrow, high-grade, downward extension of the southern tail of the mine's main ore body, the B-North zone. It also underlies the northernmost portion of the B-West zone (Fig . I) . The ore is usually reasonably competent but completely surrounded by very weak rock consisting of shear zone and unsilicified sandstones and siltstones.The zone has maximum dimensions of 420 ft in thickness, 500 ft in length , and 200 ft in width . The economic reserves extend from the 70-ft elevation (elevation above sea level) to the 630-ft elevation and consist of about 1.3 million tons of geologic reserves (proven and probable) at an average grade of 0.33 ounces per ton.Acquisition and ExplorationInitial DiscoveryThe initial discovery of the B-Neath zone was made by Tenneco Minerals during July through September, 1984. Their 22-hole surface drilling program consisted of 18 200 ft of drilling. Tenneco Minerals had acquired the 91/2 acre lease from United Mining Corporation.Asamera Minerals subsequently purchased Tenneco's lease in July, 1985; Tenneco retained a royalty position which was later purchased by Echo Bay Mining.Follow-up drilling by Asamera Minerals consisted of both surface and underground drilling. Eight surface holes (7200 ft) were drilled commencing in December, 1985. Following evaluation of the geologic data, an access drift was driven on strike along the top of the ore zone on the 500 level. Diamond drilling from this platform consisted of 17 200 ft in 79 holes."

Methods of Coal Preparation Fundamentally, the object of coal preparation is to increase, economically, the value of a fuel by making it more suitable to the uses of the consumer. This can be accomplished in three major ways: 1.Screening or sizing 2.-Mixrng or blending 3.-Cleaning By combinations of any or all of these methods we can prepare coal to meet standard specifications-a process of standardization which is the more desirable the more nearly it approaches the unvarying quality of packaged goods, where the package you buy today and tomorrow is the same as that you bought yesterday. It should be noted that it is readily possible to get good cleaning and still have poor preparation because of faulty screening and mixing, and, on the other hand, it is possible to get a passable grade of cleaning, combined with good screening and mixing facilities.

Total mineral production in Manitoba has averaged C$1 billion over the past ten years. Industrial mineral production has comprised almost 10% of the total, with more than half coming from the aggregate sector. In southeastern Manitoba, tantalum, spodumene and amblygonite concentrates, cesium and rubidium ores, cesium formate, dimension stone and sphagnum peat moss are produced. Gypsum, high-calcium limestone and lime are produced in the Interlake area. Early industrial mineral production consisted of tools and implements, salt and pottery. Historical production has included: salt, building stone, aggregate, lime and dolime, lignite coal, gypsum, natural and Portland cement, calcium bentonite, brick, light-weight aggregate, caustic soda and soda ash, and silica sand. Future industrial mineral production may come from reactivated quarries, pits and wells or from new producers of current commodities. Newproducts may include: stainless steel master alloy, silicon metal, titanium and magnetite, lithium carbonate, float-plate glass and ferrosilicon, "marble" dimension stone, magnesium metal, potash and kaolin.

"The last edition of Tax Notes expressed concern about two proposed tax changes in Finance Minister Paul Martin's 1995 budget that could have detrimental effects on Canada's mining industry. This month, Tax Notes expands on these concerns. This article is based on a paper that the author presented at ClM '95 in HalifaxIntroductionOn a global basis, there are more investment opportunities in the mining industry today than at any other time in history. Countries in Central and South America, Eastern Europe, the CIS, Central Asia, and Asia are competing aggressively to attract investment to all sectors of their domestic mining industries. Today, the demand for investment dollars exceeds the amount of dollars that are available for investment in mining. It is not surprising, then, that the established mineral producing nations are witnessing a decline in spending on exploration and development on their home turf, and an increase in spending in developing countries. In the context of a developed country such as Canada, there are two manifestations of the problem of declining investment: (I) Foreign investors are allocating more of their capital budgets to new opportunities in developing countries; and (2) Canadian juniors and seniors are spending proportionately more abroad. This shift in global spending patterns is the source of some concern for the future of Canada's mining industry, particularly because it is widely believed that the current rate of discovery of ore reserves in this country is too low to replenish depleting reserves.""Government bashing"" has always been a popular pastime in Canada. Invariably, this pastime has focussed, at !east in part, on taxation. In view of the intense competition that Canada faces on the global mining scene, it is important that the role of taxation in the decision-making process be kept in perspective. EARLY in 1951, Falconbridge undertook a research program aimed at the development of a sulphate roasting process for the recovery of the non-ferrous rnetals from the nickeliferous pyrrhotite fraction of Falconbridge ore, in order to reduce the tonnage of iron entering the srnelter. Such a method, it was hoped, would permit a high recovery of the nickel from pyrrhotite otherwise entering the smelter feed, thus not only raising the grade of the latter and reducing its iron content, but also providing an iron oxide residue useful as a source of by-product iron ore. At an early stage in the exploratory laboratory test work it was found that the degree to which the nickel could be solubilized by the sulphating roasting treatment was limited by particle size and the ex-tent to which the pyrrhotite concentrates were freed of the nickel occurring as physically separable pentlandite, a mineral relatively difficult to roast. Following considerable experience with the beneficiation of Wabana iron ore by standard methods, a study was made of the benefits to be obtained by semi-reduction. The basis of the laboratory program was an extensive mineralogical and liberation investigation which guided subsequent work. Partial reduction and beneficiation on a laboratory scale was carried out on lump ore and fines. The reduced ore was magnetically concentrated and the concentrated fines were briquetted. Data are presented on reducibility, sizing vs reduction rate, magnetic cobbing and separation, and the elimination of phosphorus. Past work is reviewed briefly and comments are made on the relation of laboratory to pilot-scale tests.

Metal price is among the key variables in the open pit optimization and the economic evaluation process. The common approach to handle metal prices in open pit mine planning is to optimize the ultimate pit and the mining schedules using a fixed, flat metal price. In this respect, metal price is assumed to be known with certainty throughout the entire mine life, which in some cases can reach 80 years. Given the volatile nature of metal markets and the metal price cycles, the conventional pit optimization approach may generate sub-optimized mining plans, which results in either extra costs to mining projects or lost revenues, or both. Long-term operational decisions such as future pit expansions, beyond the currently optimized limits, cannot be handled using the pit optimization approach based on flat metal prices. There is a growing interest in the mining industry to model and manage such market uncertainty in the pit optimization as well as the project evaluations in order to maximize the value of mining operations. In this paper, the author will outline a practical approach to optimize the ultimate pit taking into account the volatility and variability of metal markets. The proposed approach uses a combination of the pit optimizer of the commercial MineSight package and a simulation-based economic modeling real options valuation approach employing the least-squares Monte Carlo algorithm. MineSight pit optimizer employs both the floating cone for initial optimization exercise and the standard Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm. In this paper, Lerchs-Grossmann option will be used to generate the pit shells. Real options valuation approach used in this study is based on generating multiple metal price scenarios. Metal price uncertainty is modeled using stochastic metal price models such as the geometric Brownian motion and the mean-reverting process. The mining operational scenarios corresponding to the simulated metal prices are then optimized using the least-square Monte Carlo approach. The objective is to maximize the discounted cash flow value of the project while incorporating the operating flexibility to revise the operating status of the open pit with time as new information becomes available. The focus of this work is on the practicality of the proposed uncertainty-based pit optimization approach and the difference it can make to the technical operational mining decisions. A case study of a hypothetical open pit poly-metallic mine is provided. The deposit contains copper, gold and silver grades. The run of mine ore is sent to the process plant that produces copper concentrate with copper as the main metal and gold and silver as the by-products. Four uncertain variables are considered here include copper, gold, silver prices and foreign exchange rate. Both copper price and exchange rate are modeled using the mean-reverting process while gold and silver prices are modeled using the geometric Brownian motion. The case study is performed using both the conventional flat price pit optimization approach and the proposed uncertainty-based one to compare results.

Artificial intelligence techniques are ever more frequently implemented in the modern world. One of their numerous uses is supporting enterprise management. Intelligent techniques and intelligent information technology (IT) systems can be implemented in mining-related issues as well. The author of this article concentrates on supporting the process of planning mining operations by intelligent systems and techniques. The author also underlines the importance of knowledge accumulation in a mining enterprise (especially tacit knowledge) as well as its efficient storing and using. Additionally, the author provides a short description of characteristics of intelligent IT systems and indicates their capabilities in planning mining operations. She presents two solutions, namely: an advisory system which supports the process of planning preliminary works and exploitation works in hard coal mines, and a method of modeling and optimizing mining operations. Finally, the author indicates a few possible future development trends of intelligent systems - the intelligent systems of decision support.

"Residues from the CESL Copper process were leached using the CESL Gold process. The kinetics of reaction were confirmed to be fast with over 50% of the gold consistently extracted within 2 minutes of leaching. Final gold extractions under the conditions tested here were between 80-90% obtained within 90 minutes. A model for the CESL Gold process was developed. This model is slightly different based on whether the copper concentrate leach residue was ground or unground prior to leaching: the gold leaching rate constant is approximately twice as fast for the ground samples. Unground residues had a P80 of 13 ?m whereas ground residues had a P80 of 10 ?m. The model predicts a 43% decrease in leaching time for ground residue versus unground residue to achieve the same extraction under otherwise identical conditions. The model was more accurate for the ground samples. INTRODUCTIONTeck's CESL Process (Jones, 1996) was developed to provide an economically attractive alternative to traditional copper smelting. It has since evolved to also deal with copper concentrates containing valuable impurities such as nickel and undesirable ones, such as arsenic, while reducing downstream costs. Effective recovery of gold and silver is essential to the economics of the CESL Process. The Brook Hunt 2007 copper concentrate assay data (Wood-Mackenzie, 2007) were examined to determine the ratio of gold plus silver value relative to the contained copper. As indicated in Figure 1 below, nearly two-thirds of concentrates have 10% or more of their total value tied up in their precious metals content.CESL has extensively examined the recovery of gold and silver at bench, pilot and demonstration scale, which has culminated in the present CESL Gold Process (Barr et al., 2007). The process targets the precious metal contained in the leach residues produced in the copper portion of the flowsheet. This residue has two primary components which influence downstream processing. The major iron-rich fraction (-75 wt%) of the residue is a mixture of various forms of iron oxide precipitates including hematite and jarosite (Sahu and Asselin, 2011). The iron fraction ranges from amorphous to crystalline in nature depending on the compound precipitated, upstream operating conditions and feed material composition. The lesser, but by no means less important, fraction is a mixture of elemental sulphur and unreacted sulphides (principally pyrite).Elemental sulphur formed during the oxidative leach of the copper concentrate reacts with cyanide to form thiocyanate (SCN-) making a traditional cyanide leach approach too costly. Since the SCN formation reaction strongly depends on contact time with the CESL residues (Po, 2007) short contact times were preferred. This factor guided the development work towards the eventual room temperature, pressure cyanidation process which results in near complete gold dissolution in 90 minutes. A recent CESL gold demonstration campaign treating 1.5 t/d of residue from the copper oxidation step achieved an average gold extraction of 91% (96% maximum)."

Globalization and the search for new ore deposits inevitably lead to investment in foreign markets. Investors need to be aware of the effect of their venture on regional, social and economic issues when they invest. Decades of detailed statistics from various sources can be integrated and analyzed to predict the social-economic impact of investment, thereby mitigating risk. To this end, the correlation among variables such as foreign direct investment into mining (FDIM), reserves, and socio-economic indexes is examined. The investigation focuses on South America from 1992 to 2000. Throughout the past decade, South America has benefited from capital investment from more developed countries. This huge investment by the mining industry has impacted the South American economies and can be measured directly using the FDIM. Other economic variables investigated include mining gross domestic product, direct employment, and human development indexes. The correlation is based on data compiled from the World Bank, international risk assessment agencies, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and the information agencies of various South American countries. Initial analysis of the economic data suggests various expected outcomes. For example, foreign investors may disregard a measured, highly negative country risk in deference to the quality of its mineral resources. It is important to note that the standard measures of country risk published by investment analysts are not industry or investor-specific. In the case of the investor, the level of accepted risk is based on their managed investment portfolio. It is noted that arguments for level-playing fields may be the antithesis of globalization. The discovery and exploitation of ore bodies in a globalized environment necessitates the development of economic measures that standardize mining-specific risk variables and trends. The latest published information on the security of mineral investments in South America is investigated by integrating databases of economic, geologic, production, human indexes, and risk ranking.

Introduction Since the beginning of gold mining in Nova Scotia in the year 1860, the biggest problem o the mine operators has been to find and follow the ore zones in the narrow quartz veins. It was early recognized that all veins were not gold bearing and that, in those that were, the commercial ore was confined to limited zones. A large number of geologists and mining engineers have been interested enough to give time and thought to the problem, but, until the last four or five years preceding World War II, they were handicapped by lack of exact data from mining operations. The necessary data could only be obtained by daily checking of underground operations. Such daily checks were instituted at a number of mines during the period 1935-40 and, in every case, were successful in delimiting the ore zone or zones for the particular mine. The present paper deals with the results of this work as applied to practical ore finding. It is an attempt at extrapolation, from observations in the four districts with which the writer is personally familiar, co other districts in which similar conditions or structures are reported.

"A study of the physical properties of long grades of asbestos fibers imported into the United States during the past eight years has disclosed information that will contribute materially to effective selection and use of fibers for electrical products. The study embraced fiber lengths, volume resistivity under three different conditions, total iron by chemical analysis, magnetic rating, conductivity of an aqueous ex-tract and its sodium chloride equivalent.The fibers examined included chrysotiles from Rhodesia, British Columbia, and Barberton area; marlime from Bechuanaland and Province of Quebec; amosite and crocidolites from Africa and Australia; and anthophyllites from Mozambique and from Georgia in the United States. Volume resistivity values provide a relative basis for estimating the electrical performance of end products; magnetic rating -an estimate of the quantity of iron compounds present in excess of those in the asbestos structure; conductivity of an aqueous extract; and an estimate of the ionizable impurities in fibers.Tests of these factors yield in-formation, not heretofore generally known, which may serve as a guide in the evaluation of asbestos fibers for electrical products."

The evaluation of mineral projects involves the identification, mitigation and management of significant uncertainty. Benchmarking is an essential and effective way of increasing confidence and reducing uncertainty associated with input parameters and assumptions. Comprehensive and detailed benchmarking will ensure ?best practice? technologies, methods and systems have been considered and that the appropriate practices can be identified and incorporated into the project. In conjunction with the involvement of experienced industry practitioners, benchmarking is best employed throughout project evaluation to enable early identification of ?errors?, producing more accurate and predictable outcomes. Considerable time and effort is required to gather data and information, which should be benchmarked by the project evaluation team. There is a history of mining projects underperforming, on production, on costs and on return to the investors. The quality of mine plans and feasibility studies, and the quality of the input data is being questioned in many ways. Benchmarking assists sound project evaluation practices, by providing a database of actual results, to validate project inputs and outcomes, ensuring they are realistic and achievable. Benchmarking also provides unbiased, statistical support as the basis for sound investment decision making and ensures well considered decisions are made resulting in a more efficient study process. The evaluation of the quality of projects which are the subject of transactions also benefits from the use of real data obtained from a benchmarking database. Vendors are quick to highlight the benefits of their projects, and conceal the flaws, inflating the value. Buyers will want to quantify the potential of a project through the due diligence process relying on actual results from benchmarking. For the reasons broadly outlined above, benchmarking should be considered as an essential component of effective Project Evaluation.

"Geological investigation in the Appalachian region of Canada began more than 150 years ago. The distribution of rock formations, and their ages and regional structure are today reasonably well known in most parts of the region to 1-or 2-mile scale. Most Newfoundland geology is known only to 4-mile scale. About 200 earth scientists carry out research in the region, of whom about 25 per cent are government employees, 50 per cent university staff and graduate students, and 25 per cent industry employees.Increased activity is needed toward both regional analyses and problem studies through the efforts of multi-disciplinary teams. The ultimate objectives of earth science must be the discovery and development of mineral re•-sources and the use and conservation of natural material in the environment, all for the benefit of the local in-habitants. To accomplish this, the scientific community must carry out an array of research projects ranging from the technical products of geological, geophysical and geochemical surveys through to the research products de-signed to renew theories and hypotheses bearing on natural processes. Some scientific sub-objectives are listed.Recommended is the increase and broadening of communication among Appalachian scientists, specifically those resident in the Atlantic Provinces. It is proposed that an Appalachian Division of the Geological Association of Canada be formed to provide a forum for discussion of Appalachian topics. In addition, a committee or council of university, industry and government earth scientists should be formed to examine the state of the science in the region, to identify programs of investigation and individual projects of research, and to recommend methods of approach. If the committee succeeds and the scientific community acts upon the recommendations, the quantity, quality and pertinence of research will increase, and earth science will better serve Appalachian society."

"Abstract -Biotite from aplite that appears to have crystallized simultaneously with disseminated Cu-Mo mineralization at MacLeod Lake in northern Quebec yields K-Ar dates in the range 2032 ± 44 Ma to '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. The mean value, 2065 Ma, is some 400 Ma younger than the 2485 ± 64 Ma date obtained from a hornblende concentrate separated from a granodiorite sill that is spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with the disseminated Cu-Mo deposit. The mean biotite date of 2065 Ma at MacLeod Lake, a K-Ar date of 2055 Ma reported from an area 50 km east of MacLeod Lake and published dates of about 2000 Ma for galenas from the Chibougamau Cu-Au ores, suggest a widespread thermal and mineralization event, in that part of the Superior Province east of James Bay, that differs from the common late Archean mineralization that is related to volcanism and metamorphic-intrusive activity.Sommaire - Les datations au K-Ar sur des biotites qui auraient cristallisé en même temps que la minéralisation disséminée en Cu et Mo dans une aplite mise en place au Lac MacLeod, au nord du Québec, s'échalonnent entre 2032 ± 44 Ma et '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. "Numerical modelling is becoming universal in rock engineering practice. Most applications focus on the prediction of failure loads of 2D problems, where the numerical models are useful extensions to analytical methods and experience-based design criteria. For 3D problems and problems where the assessment of serviceability indicators – displacements, ground-structure response, etc. – are of importance, the selection of the constitutive models themselves and the implications of the selection of material parameters may have a very heavy impact on the reliability of the model outcome and its predictive capability.This paper overviews basic common aspects of constitutive equations used in practical rock engineering and summarizes some challenges that are frequently observed when reviewing numerical models performed for routine problems in rock engineering. INTRODUCTIONNumerical methodsFrom a philosophical perspective models, either analytical or numerical, are idealizations of a perceived reality. For us engineers, models are just tools we use to guide our judgement and understanding of the problem in hand. When dealing with problems in rock engineering, we resort to a wide range of techniques:1. Closed form solutions like confinement-convergence methods for circular tunnels: these methods satisfy equilibrium and compatibility requirements at the cost of a crude simplification of the material behavior and geometry;2. Limit analysis methods, like bearing capacity formulas: lower bound methods satisfy equilibrium but sacrifice compatibility, and upper bound methods do the opposite. Material behavior must be simple, geometry admits limited freedom;3. Limit equilibrium methods, like method of slices for slope stability: they satisfy restricted forms of equilibrium, do not satisfy compatibility requirements, require simple material behavior but have a much greater flexibility on geometry;4. Numerical methods, where a mesh is employed to discretize the problem geometry: when properly formulated, these methods satisfy equilibrium and compatibility requirements and give reasonable approximations to the behavior of very complex geometries and construction sequences. Very little restrictions remain on geometry and material behavior, but the cost of calibrating the material parameters can be very high."

WITH the friendly consent both of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, for whom this paper was written, and of the author, we had the pleasure of publishing Mr. Oliver Hall's paper on Mining at Noranda in our issue of last March and of having Mr. Hall present it at the Montreal Meeting. In the following pages we now report the discussion elicited by the paper at a meeting of the Institution in London on March 18th. The report is taken from the April, 1937, issue of the Bulletin of the Institution, to whom we again tender our thanks. THE PRESIDENT (MR. ROBERT ANNAN) said that this paper was, by arrangement with the Institution and the author, also being published by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for approximately simultaneous discussion. He was sorry that Mr. Oliver Hall could not be present to introduce it in person, for he was sure that the author would have had many more details to give about this most interesting mine. The paper contained a very useful account of mining operations, and personally he had been pleased to see the tri-dimensional projections of the orebody in Figs. 3 and S. It was a good illustration o the value of that method in presenting the form of an orebody such as this. While he had no desire to go into technical details, he wished to call attention to a remark in Mr. Hall's introduction, in dealing with the history of the mine and the principles on which it was run. The author had given an account of the early difficulties in solving geological problems, and later of the economic difficulties of seeing this mine through a period of intense depression in metal prices. He stated that it was clear that, to maintain income, tonnage must be increased, and, to maintain profits, costs must be decreased. It would be observed that there was no question of increasing the grade of ore. Then the author went on to say: 'Having set the house in order in the years of adversity, the higher price for gold is being used to mine to still lower limits and lengthen the life of the enterprise and the welfare of those dependent on it'.

Introduction The Siscoe gold mine is the most easterly producer of gold from deposits lying in the belt of Keewatin and Timiskaniing rocks which extends east from Kirkland Lake, Ontario, and on through the Rouyn copper area. Unlike many of the deposits in this belt, those of Siscoe are contained almost entirely in a stock of much-altered granodiorite which intrudes Keewatin lavas. They are situated on an island of about one square mile in area, lying in lake De Montigny, Dubuisson township, 40 miles south of Amos, on the Transcontinental branch of the Canadian National railways, and 52 miles east, and slightly south, of Noranda. Geographically, the deposits are favour-ably situated with respect to transportation facilities, a through water-route being available from Amos, along the Harricana river and its lake expansions. The deposits consist of auriferous quartz-tourmaline veins of the fissure-filled type and are of particular interest because of their geological structure and genesis. Furthermore, deposits of a similar type occur both in the Keewatin and in granodiorite bodies to the east, in Dubuisson, Bourlamaque, Pascalis, and Louvicourt townships, and it is hoped that the following discussion may be of some aid in the exploration work now being carried on throughout this general area.

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to give a •brief history of iron and steel in British Columbia, a quick look at the present operations of Western Canada Steel, Limited, a review of iron ore resources and iron and steel markets, and a projection of what the future might hold for the industry in British Columbia.From the Past to the PresentWhile the paper is entitled Past, Present, and Future, in covering the past, which we shall call the time prior to 1947, there is very little to be said. Small shipments of iron ore were made from the Texada deposits by the Puget Sound Iron Company from 1886 to 1907. Total ore shipped did not exceed 70,000 tons. Part of this is believed to have been used in building a United States battleship in 1907 in the Bremerton Naval Yards in Seattle, Washington.In 1914 a small steel mill was started on Lulu island, rolling bars from •box piles and used shafting. This mill operated spasmodically for a few years but finally burned down in 1921. The rolling mill stands were sold to China and are no doubt in operation in China today.In 1916 the City of Port Moody assisted in the financing of a mill which operated on re-roll rails, box piles, and steel ingots made in an experimental electric furnace in Port Moody. This furnace also produced small quantities of pig iron scrap. The backers of the Port Moody mill showed a great deal of enterprise and must have been a very forward looking group, since this was one of the first recorded applications of the electric furnace to small ingot production. Despite their enterprise, the operation was unsuccessful and terminated in 1921."
