The Thabazimbi iron ore deposit comprises a series of stratabound orebodies, on average 18 - 25 m thick that are aligned along the faulted basal contact between the Penge Iron Formation and dolostones of the Malmani Subgroup, Transvaal Supergroup. Field geological relationships and petrographic observations suggest that the formation of high-grade iron ores took place after contact metamorphism related to the intrusion of the Bushveld Complex (2.06 Ga) but before the deposition of red beds of the Waterberg Group at ca 1.9 Ga. Hard, high-grade iron ores are predominantly composed of martite and microplaty hematite. Goethite is restricted to supergene-modified ores close to the Late Cretaceous û Early Cenozoic Old African land surface. At depth, the high-grade hematite ores interfinger with low-grade dolomite-hematite and calcite-hematite ores. Iron oxides (martite, microplaty hematite) present in these low-grade ores are texturally indistinguishable from those in the associated high-grade ores, ie ore formation is genetically associated with carbonate metasomatism. Microthermometric studies of fluid inclusions in sparitic carbonates and rare megaquartz reveal their hydrothermal origin. Two compositionally distinct aqueous fluids of shallow crustal origin are identified, namely a Ca-Na-rich high-salinity brine (26 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH ~160¦C), and an aqueous Mg-K-bearing fluid of intermediate salinity (8.3 - 12.6 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH~120 - 150¦C). The results confirm that high-grade hematite orebodies at the Thabazimbi deposit owe their origin to an event of extensive oxidative carbonate metasomatism (calcification), similar to that recognised at other important high-grade iron ore deposits in the world. Hydrothermal ore formation is both structurally and lithologically controlled. Size and quality of the orebodies was improved by Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic deep lateritic weathering as carbonate-hematite ores were enriched to friable high-grade ores, but this supergene modification is second in importance compared to the primary event of hydrothermal ore formation.

Risk management has become an essential tool for mining companies to ensure their projects are well-managed and profit expectations are achieved. Risk management has also become a mandatory corporate governance requirement in Australia for publicly listed companies and equally important to attract investors. This paper provides a brief overview of the essential tools needed to implement a practical risk management framework to comply with the internationally recognised ISO 31000:2009 risk management-principles and guidelines from the perspective of small or soon to be producing mining companies. To?successfully?deal with the unknown and to manage the opportunities and risks involved with a mining project requires a clear understanding of the basic risk management principles. These include how to develop a project risk register, how to develop a project risk treatment plan and how to manage and monitor project risks to take full advantage of the opportunities presented.The first step is to identify and fully appreciate the risks that face a mining project. There are many risk identification methods that can be used including checklists, brainstorming and hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies. These often lead to a telephone book full of risks which are near to impossible to manage. A risk library specifically designed?for mining?projects containing no more than 100 risks will cover the major showstoppers, is practical and can be readily implemented and successfully managed.A risk framework also needs to be established which is compatible with the companyÆs structure and objectives. Once each risk has been assessed in regard to consequence and likelihood and the risk control systems are in place they need to be assigned to the responsible manager. The extreme or high risks will require a risk treatment plan to be developed. Risks will change during the life cycle of a mining project. Ok Tedi Mining Limited has recently completed the first phase of a trial to compare the performance of D26B Krebs cyclones in different configurations to the new Warman 650 mm CAVEX cyclones. From 1992, rougher flotation feed size has increased from the target d80 grind size of 150 ¦m with increasing SAG mill throughput. At high SAG mill throughput, operators have difficulty maintaining the target cyclone feed pressure and must increase the cyclone feed density, thus resulting in a coarsening of the cyclone split. Warman International have developed the CAVEX high capacity cyclone. The new CAVEX cyclones, when compared to the Krebs units appear to:produce a measurable increase in volumetric flow for the same pressure drop; maintain or decrease the proportion of coarse particles reporting to overflow; and lower the overflow density. In all plant trials to-date, the CAVEX cyclones appear to be superior to the standard Ok Tedi Krebs cyclones. Further testwork is planned to evaluate modified Krebs cyclones (with recent design improvements) against the CAVEX cyclones.

In an area north of Mowit Ica chip sampling of limonitic outcrops on a regional scale led to the investigation of a number of areas considered to be geochemically anomalous for copper and zinc. These areas were closely gridded,end where geochemical results were favourable, they were subsequently drilled or ro¦titeaned Che results indicated that for copper Lne anomalies were mainly associated wiL_ ironstone formed in areas of faulting. is suggested that copper is able to move considerable distances by ground water movement and is likely to be fixed under conditions of low pH. The movement of zinc is more difficult to explain but it appears to have an affinity for iron and is only deposited in areas having a high pH (i.e. doioiirific scdimet=Cs).

The Coronation Hill gold-platinum-palladium prospect is located in the valley of the South Alligator River (latitude 13'35'S, longitude 132'36'E), about 80 kilometres east of Pine Creek in the Northern Territory. Coronation Hill was one of thirteen sites in the South Alligator Valley at which uranium was mined between 1955 and 1964 after initial discovery by the Bureau of Mineral Resources in 1953. Most of the mines were operated by United Uranium No Liability. The Sleisbeck mine 25 kilometres south of Coronation Hill was operated by North Australian Uranium Corporation and the group of mines at Rockhole about 20 kilometres to the north-west of Coronation Hill was operated by South Alligator Uranium No Liability. The uranium mine at Coronation Hill produced about 26000 tonnes of ore averaging 2.6 kg/t U308 with an estimated average gold grade of 10.4 g/ gold. Gold was commonly associated with the uranium mineralisation and was recovered at the gravity treatment plant at El Sherana. Gold was also recovered in 1986 by Pacific Gold Mines Limited by treating the tailings from the Moline and Rockhole uranium leach plants at a CIP plant at Moline. With the completion of uranium contracts in 1964 mining in the South Alligator Valley ceased. Exploration for uranium continued in the area during the 1960s and 1970s with no success. The Coronation Hill Joint Venture (BHP Gold Mines Limited 45 per cent, Pioneer Minerals (Gold) Pry Ltd 45 per cent, Notgold Limited 10 per cent)carried out the first exploration specifically targetted at gold in 1984 with the drilling of five vertical drill holes which indicated high potential for a substantial gold resource at Coronation Hill with no associated uranium. The Joint Venture has sub- sequently drilled about 25000 metres of diamond drill holes at Coronation Hill alone. Analytical results from 1985 drilling established that platinum and palladium were associated with gold. An indicated resource of 3.49Mt at 5.12g/t Au, 0.21g/t Pt and 0.56g/t Pd has been calculated using a lg/t Au cut off.

The design and optimisation of mineral flotation circuits is currently performed using a combination of laboratory, pilot plant and full scale testing. Owing to the variable nature of flotation circuits and the complex nature of the flotation process, it is difficult to interpret the data collected from flotation testwork. JKSimFloat is a computer modelling package which is being developed to interpret flotation testwork data collected at the various stages of the mining cycle. The parameters derived from the program can be used to assess potential circuit configurations in both the design of new flotation circuits and in the refinement of existing operations. The aim of this paper is to outline the modelling methodology used in JKSimFloat and to outline how it can be used effectively to model data collected from either the laboratory, the pilot plant or the existing flotation circuit. The use of flotation model parameters in circuit evaluation will be demonstrated via the use of a case study based on data collected from ComincoÆs Red Dog lead flotation circuit.

The Express Rail Link (XRL) will provide high-speed rail services from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and a connection to the national high-speed passenger rail network serving major cities throughout Mainland, China. The HK$ 67 B (NZ$ 11.5 Billion) project is of great strategic importance for Hong Kong and is being implemented to a very tight schedule, from early 2010 with completion targeted for 2015.The works include a 15 platform terminus station in West Kowloon, 26 km of twin track tunnels from the terminus to the Hong Kong/Shenzhen boundary at Mai Po, tunnel vent shafts/adits/emergency rescue siding and a stabling siding facility. Trains on the Hong Kong section are intended to operate at speed up to 200 km per hour and up to 350 km per hour on the Mainland section.This presentation will provide an overview of the entire XRL project, with a focus on the challenging geotechnical and spatial constraints on the tunnel works. "The primary objective of this paper is to demonstrate a different approach to predicting and verifying mechanical sampling system precision. Early in the year 2011 an experiment was conducted to evaluate the sampling precision being obtained by a three-stage falling-stream mechanical sampling system for coal owned and operated by Peabody Energy. This system collects samples from lots averaging approximately 14000 t being loaded onto rail cars at a flow rate averaging about 9000 t/h. In phase 1 of the experiment, a total of 60 increments were collected in a two day period at preassigned intervals using a cross-belt sampler located on a conveyor belt feeding a silo upstream of the sampling system under evaluation. Coal variability parameters were calculated from the resulting laboratory analysis data using the gauge-invariant fractal model developed by the author.Estimates of precision of the three-stage system as a function of the number of increments were calculated using the variability parameters determined in phase 1. In phase 2 of the experiment, duplicate samples of 30 lots of coal were taken by the three-stage sampling system, enabling calculations of the precision being achieved by the system. Phase 2 precision estimates are in reasonable agreement with those of phase 1. Conclusions drawn from the experiment include the following: Experimental variograms or the equivalent correlograms are essential in understanding sampling issues and for designing a sampling system to meet specific precision requirements. Consensus coal sampling standards provided by ISO and ASTM may be improved by treating all stages of a mechanical sampling system as æsamplingÆ rather than considering downstream sampling stages as æsample preparationÆ, to be treated in a separate part of the document. The coal industry would profit from use of methodology for routinely monitoring the overall measurement precision and the precision of the individual components of measurement: sampling, sample preparation and laboratory testing. This would not only give necessary credence to the measurement results but would also no doubt, lead to more efficient sampling system designs.CITATION:Rose, C D, 2012. To explain in any depth the industrial relations of Broken Hill I believe that it is necessary to trace some of the many happenings that created the present industrial climate. While appreciating that our relations with the local industry are relatively good, it must be pointed out that to preserve and improve this present situation a duty is owed to everyone connected with the industry (workers, share- holders, etc.) by management and unions to see that just and reasonable agreements are found for any disputes. If the companies ever take the local position for granted it would soon die, killed by someone who may get some short term benefit, but who would lose something of incalculable worth in the long run. WMC has mined the Perseverance disseminated orebody exclusively by SLC (sublevel cave) methods. Deteriorating ground conditions in the vicinity of an orebody inflection forced a re-evaluation of future mining at Perseverance and a strategy to drop down below the inflection zone and recommence the cave was implemented. This strategy has led to increased production at higher grades, resulting in lower costs and better mill recoveries. This paper describes the evolution of mine planning, development, support and production strategies through the successful process of implementing the ædrop-downÆ and re-establishing the SLC.

THE question of dealing with the small quantities of copper found in a great many of the purchased ores became a factor of importance when the Sulphide Corporation decided to refine its own lead bullion, as the presence of this impurity has a marked effect on the efficiency of the de-silverizing operations of the Parkes process. Removal of the copper from the base bullion.The copper is removed from the base bullion by drossing, which collects the copper, and at the same time has considerable gold, silver, and lead values. The drassing of the bullion is done in two stages-firstly, at the smelters; and secondly, in thecopper kettles at the refinery. In both cases a "wet" dross is produced, which is subsequently "sweated" in a suitable type of furnace. When "dry" the dross is raked out and stored until enough accumulates to warrant a nUl on dross in the small blastfurnace kept for that purpose. A typical assay of the "dry" dross is as follows...WORKING THE DROSS UP TO LOW-GRADE CU-PB MATTEThe accumulated dross is treated in a small blast furnace with the necessary fiuxes, producing a low-grade Cu-Pb matte and base lead bullion.

With the declining of high-quality hematite and magnetite iron ore reserves and the increasing accumulation of material resulting from mining and beneficiation operations that appear as lowquality depots and discharged materials in tailing dams, the necessity of recycling these reserves is increasingly becoming a critical demand. The Chadormalu iron ore mine is among the largest deposits of magnetite-hematite iron ore in Iran. In this mine, the total wet processing tails accumulated in tailing dams are over 92 Mt containing 25–40 per cent Fe. Laboratory and pilot tests on tailing samples led to the design and implementation of the Chadormalu Tailing Recovery plant (CTR) with a unique process circuit in Iran. In the CTR plant, after three steps of re-pulping with spiral classifiers and sanding machines, the underflow is concentrated by two stages of WMIMS and produces 64 per cent Fe grade magnetite concentrate. The tailings of the drums are mixed together and introduced into the hematite recovery section, including two stages of VPHGMS separators, and 60 per cent Fe grade hematite concentrate is produced. This plant has been in operation for over ten years with a total yield of 18.93 per cent. Due to changes in the materials extracted through new tailing dams, the quality of the final concentrate dramatically dropped to 56.36 per cent Fe and 0.79 per cent P; therefore, applying reverse flotation and removing phosphorus from the final concentrate was inevitable. By using this approach, upgrading of the concentrate to 63.01 per cent Fe and 0.05 per cent P was obtained. Furthermore, regarding the high amount of phosphorus in the tailing streams, direct flotation has been designed to produce apatite concentrate as a by-product stream through a flotation system comprising series banks of Rougher, Cleaner, and Re-Cleaners flotation cells. Hence based on the results, at optimum conditions, a final apatite concentrate with a yield of 15.78 per cent and 14.06 per cent P could be achieved. Successful implementation of this project has led to the production of magnetite-hematite and apatite concentrates with annual capacities of 250 000 and 45 000 t, together with total yields of 11.59 per cent and 6.19 per cent (includes de-sliming of apatite flotation feed), respectively.

Melbourne Water Corporation, through the Pipelines Alliance, has commenced construction of a new drainage pipeline to provide additional flood protection within the Sandgate Avenue Main Drain catchment, in order to mitigate against the risk of flooding of Frankston’s central activity district (CAD).The project involves the construction of a 1550 m long, 2.5 m internal diameter tunnel, commencing upstream at the Monash University Peninsula Campus and traversing approximately west to the outlet located at Kananook Creek. The tunnel was excavated by a dual slurry-earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (TBM), with the depth to tunnel crown ranging from 0.7 m to 14 m below the natural surface level. The TBM navigated 500 m radius curves, with a maximum drive length of 608 m. The tunnel lining consists of 2.5 m internal diameter, 250 mm thick reinforced concrete jacking pipe.The geotechnical conditions along the tunnel alignment consisted of mixed face ground conditions, predominately clay, with clayey sand and sandy clay and some sand deposits near Kananook Creek.This paper presents the challenges associated with the operation of the slurry separation plant during tunnel construction. In particular, the paper focuses the impact of slurry separation on tunnel advance rates, the lessons learnt during construction with regards to slurry separation and on the decision to adopt a dual slurry-earth pressure balance shield TBM. In addition this paper highlights the importance of having a thorough understanding of the slurry separation requirements on a slurry TBM project prior to selecting the necessary plant.

This paper describes a new computer program which can significantly increase the Net Present Value of either an open cut or underground mine by optimising the cut-offs used during the operating life of the mine. It was developed over a period of about three years by Whittle Programming Pty Ltd of Melbourne, Australia. Several authors have contributed to the theory behind this work, but the ideas were further developed, consolidated, and clearly explained by Lane (1988). It was this book that triggered the development of the new program. The paper starts with an explanation of the theory behind this type of optimisation, and then goes on to describe the computer methods used to optimise the different parts of the problem.

Quantitative probabilistic ecological risk assessment has been used to evaluate the likely effect on fish diversity and abundance of filtered and bioavailable metals in streamwater affected by acid drainage from the abandoned and remediated Rum Jungle U/Cu mine in the Northern Territory of Australia. The water quality was determined using monitoring data from a gauging station on the East Branch of the Finniss River, downstream of the mine site, and modelled assuming a number of potential water quality management options. The management options ranged from no action, through some flushing options to full catch and treatment of contaminated seepage from the waste rock heaps. The computer code AQUARISK was used to undertake the analyses. Critical criteria for contaminant water concentrations at the site, derived from probability density functions of available fish ecotoxicology data, were found to closely approximate the regulatory trigger values for the contaminants of concern. Modelled predictions of reduced diversity and abundance were also in good agreement with in situ biodiversity measures. Based on a reasonable target of 67 per cent species tolerance for this heavy impacted site, it was found that none of the low cost options for wastewater management was acceptable. Combinations of two of the options approached acceptability. Both of the catch and treat options exceeded the arbitrary acceptability target well. This implied that the more expensive option of liming to pH 10 might be unnecessary at this site. Thus, the use of ecological risk assessment modelling has proven useful in undertaking cost-benefit analyses for this site. The approach provides a management decision-making tool that can be economically used to link expensive on-site environmental engineering options with site-specific ecological goals rather than the previous nebulous aims of æreduced contaminant loadÆ or æimproved biodiversityÆ that often resulted in excessive expenditure without achieving successful environmental benefit.

There are many important physical phenomena in mine ventilation which involve transient mass and heat transfer processes. These processes have been modeled using differential equations often solved with close form solution. Within the last two decades, many numerical schemes have been devised to solve these mass-transfer problems. Much of this effort has focused on variants of the finite element and finite difference methods. In this paper, the solution of mass transfer models in mine ventilation by finite difference technique is discussed. Specifically, the computational effort and the accuracy of the solution are presented.

The reasons for and the methods of inte- gration of the gold treatment plant with the existing nickel concentrator are discussed. The integration was accomplished in three stages commencing in May 1980 and attain- ing current throughput in December 1982. The problems encountered and their solution, including the design and construction of a new tailings dam are also discussed.

British Coal's Selby Complex is the newest producing mine in the United Kingdom. The reasons behind its origins, planning and design are explained. Some detail is given of equipment used, with the emphasis being placed on the unique features of its layout. The entire project has been planned and constructed over many years and the design has consequently changed, principally in response to the geology of the coalfield and improving technology. In spite of many totally unexpected difficulties, the mine, which is not yet in full production, has the highest productivity in the United Kingdom.

The coal seam gas (CSG) industry is expanding rapidly in the Surat and Bowen basins. CSG production involves pumping water from the coal seams to release the gas adsorbed to coal particles. The reduction in water pressure in the coal seams will cause some reductions in water pressure in overlying and underlying aquifers because there will always be some interconnectivity between the formations. The Surat Basin is a sub-basin of the Great Artesian Basin, which contains aquifers of high economic, environmental and cultural value. The Condamine Alluvium is also an important water resource, which overlies parts of the eastern margin of the Surat Basin.Under the Queensland (Qld) regulatory framework, an area of intensive CSG development involving multiple CSG operators can be declared to be a cumulative management area. For such areas the Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment develops assessments of future impacts on aquifer water pressures and develops and manages arrangements. The results are published in underground water impact reports.The Surat underground water impact report (QWC, 2012) was approved in December 2012. Since the 1950's drilling has been rapidly mechanised. First from hand held drills with air legs to pneumatic jumbos, then to more effective hydraulic jumbos. Development of underground drilling equipment naturally could not have stopped here. Hydraulic drilling saw an improvement in drilling capacity and efficiency after the introduction of second generation drifters in the early 1980's. Also in the early 1980's a few equipment suppliers started to study how to improve the efficiency in operating the rigs. The first computerised rigs for tunnelling were delivered to work sites in mid 1980's. At the same time a few computerised longhole drills started drilling in mines.
