In the majority of recently commissioned gold mines granular activated carbon is used to adsorb gold from alkaline cyanide pulps or solutions. At the same time the carbon also adsorbs many other inorganic and organic species, most of which lower the activity of the carbon. Removal of these foulants is necessary before the carbon is reactivated and recycled. Standard practice for re- storing carbon activity involves high temperature treatment in a kiln - an apparently straightforward unit operation which is not always satisfactorily carried out. This paper presents the results of some fundamental work carried out on the thermal reactivation of carbon in a laboratory rotating pot kiln. The effects of temperature and steam addition on carbon activity were examined and compared with the activity of carbons obtained from a number of commercial kilns. Carbon was also reactivated using a small-scale Rintoul Furnace in which carbon was resistively heated by the direct passage of an alternating electric current. It was established that both elevated temperatures and the addition of steam to hot carbon generally enhanced its activity although peat-based extruded carbons responded a little differently to coconut shell types. Other measurements made included the weight loss and the hardness of carbons as a function of reactivation conditions.

To secure a sustainable competitive advantage some smelters may need strategies based on flexibility in feed and product ranges depending on immediate future projections of profitability. This paper explores the technical requirements for strategic diversity in smelting, leaving procurement, marketing and contractual considerations aside. The days when a smelting operation is tied specifically to say only processing zinc concentrates are perhaps drawing to a close. While internationally traded mineral concentrates are available, attractive business opportunities must exist for fully diversified custom smelters. Certain new and emerging technologies have inherent characteristics that are evaluated in this context. The paper identifies the basic building blocks that will permit such a scenario and assesses the technical feasibility. The ability to respond flexibly to environmental pressures is highlighted as being of paramount importance.

At the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, impurities toxic to the electrolytic production of zinc metal, notably arsenic and antimony, have traditionally been coprecipitated when precipitating iron as ferric hydroxide. With the development of a new lead/zinc mine at Elura, New South Wales, it was anticipated that the concentration of impurities, particularly arsenic, in the zinc sulphide concentrates treated at Risdon would increase. This suggested that an increase in the capacity of the iron purification step in the Risdon plant would be required to cope with the higher input of these impurities.Laboratory investigations showed that the additional capacity would be achieved, either by a large increase in the amount of iron used as the "collector" in the process, or by a two-stage process. The latter approach was preferred as a increase in the amount of iron precipitated would lead to much higher operating costs and overloading of the existing equipment.In the two stage procedure, acidic iron bearing solution is added to solution feeding the first stage and most of the arsenic removed from solution when iron is precipitated from solution by neutralisation with limestone. Mter separation of the precipitated solids, acidic iron bearing solution is added to the solution, and remaining arsenic removed almost completely following neutralisation by limestone.This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant results and the plant modifications required. Abrief account is also given of the operator training and acceptance in the use of the digital control facilities installed in the new plant.The new plant is working well and good solution purity is being maintained despite a substantial increase in the concentration of impurities in the raw materials.

Pellets were produced from carefully sized iron ore and silica sand fractions, under controlled moisture conditions, using a sealed balling drum. The strength of these pellets was measured as a function of moisture content and particle size. The results showed that the strength of the pellets could be adequately described by a model which equates the strength of the pellets with the negative pressure developed within the porous mass, provided that the particle size distribution was narrow and the mean particle size relatively large. This paper presents a method of measuring field power consumption of shearers and deriving specific energy consumption versus shearer haulage speed performance curves. A description of a computer program which simulates the cutting action of a shearer drum is presented. A comparison between the field specific energy curves and the computer simulation results is made. The simulation results compare well with the field data where all the coal seam is being cut by the shearer. The computer simulation results give back-calculated field pick force cutting characteristics, which allow the performance of the shearer to be predicted for other operating conditions, e.g. effect of changes to pick lacing, effect of changing the drum rotational speed, allows the calculation of power requirements for a particular production rate.

The first stage in the refining of lead blast furnace bullion is the removal of copper and this is normally done as a batch process in open kettles,A number of attempts have been made in the past to establish fontinuous processes operating in reverberatory type furnaces, but the growth of accretions in the furnace has always presented a serious problem.This has been overcome in the plant of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty Ltd at Port Pirie by the construction of a reverberatory furnace and ancillary cooling system of novel design.Although a number of mechanical and metallurgical problems still remain to be solved, it is claimed that a workable continuous copper drossing process has been established.

Unnamed early prospectors panned gold from creeks drain- ing the Great Dividing Range in the early part of 1851. The first publicised discovery was credited to Edward Hargraves near Bathurst in New South Wales later in 1851 and during the ensu- ing gold rush, prospectors rapidly made discoveries elsewhere in New South Wales and later across the border in Victoria. Reference to the attached graphs of gold production indicates that for much of the first 100 years, gold production came from the easily worked and readily discovered shallow alluvial deposits, many of which were located in the creeks draining mountainous regions of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland (Fig. 1 and 2). As these deposits were exhausted, prospectors turned their attention to outcrop lode deposits which led to the development of underground mining techniques and a significant boost in over- all gold production. With the discovery of the rich Golden Mile lodes in Kalgoorlie in 1893, gold production increased signifi- cantly and peaked around the turn of the century. At that time, the enormous potential of the great Witwatersrand deposits in South Africa had only just been appreciated and for a few years, Australia led the world in gold production (1855-1863 and again in 1903). Underground mining continued in the Eastern Goldfields area of Western Australia, the Bendigo-Ballarat region of Victoria and in northeast Queensland. Very few of these operations continued beyond the Second World War, except the larger producers in the Kalgoorlie region where recovered grade had dropped to about 6 g/t Au. By the early 1970s with the gold price fixed at US$35 per ounce, most of the operations were shut down as labour costs escalated, with only the low cost bulk mining operation at Mt. Charlotte and the high grade reefs at Norseman continuing in Production.

The compact BWE system set up in 1984 to mine ironsand dunes and the underlying ironsand-clay has been an effective high volume produc- tion unit for New Zealand Steel Mining Ltd at the Waikato North Head ironsand mine. The system utilising two compact S400E (0 & K) Bucket Wheel Exca- vators and a single shared Beltwagon for transfer to the shiftable bench conveyors replaced a fleet of mobile elevating scrapers when the produc- tion requirement was increased by a factor of six. A key factor in favour of the BWE system was the economic advan- tages of low unit costs for both manpower and electrical energy.

Tin mining has taken place in the New England region of New South Wales since 1872. Until fairly recent times there was little pro- vision made for environmental protection. Mining methods,which included ground sluicing and open cutting,had considerable environmental impact. Much of the topsoil was lost and there is little vegetation on the infertile and at times toxic, subsoil. Thus much of the lands disturbed by mining have not been stabilised and are eroding, causing extensive pollution of adjacent watercourses. There are more than 1500ha of abandoned tin mine sites in the New England, representing one of the worst rehabilitation problems in New South Wales and reflecting poorly on the mining industry as a whole. Recent tin mining operations incorporate progressive rehabilitation in their mining cycle. Topsoil is stockpiled and later respread. This topsoil contains a seed source, facilitating revegetation and thus stabilisation. The tin mining industry, under considerable cost pressures at present, is seeking a cost- effective revegetation technique. Most of the mines in the New England are situated in a forest environment. Trials have been conducted in the past using exotic pasture species with limited success due to the characteristics of the subsoil. Other revege- tation trials have used pine or eucalypt tree species. The cost of these techniques is a major disadvantage. Certain acacias species were observed colonising disturbed tin mining areas on very infertile subsoils. Acacias have a number of characteristics indicating a possible applic- ations in mine rehabilitation programmes.

The pitfalls, pleasures and management issues associated with international and remote projects are diverse.However, no problem is insurmountable and if an engineering team chooses (by luck or good planning) to push through the difficulties, success can mean an extremely satisfying experience for individuals and a significant, positive result for an organisation.International projects are not for the faint hearted or inflexible. Working in foreign lands with people who may or may not speak English and who may not initially respect you can become mentally and physically tiring.Sometimes the challenges are not fully explained to individuals in advance. Individuals then often learn about the challenges ù and discover solutions ù on the job. While this initially puts great pressure on individuals, matters improve eventually, especially when the locals come to understand that you are on site to make a positive difference.This paper will discuss aspects of a recent international project including meeting international clientsÆ expectations, dealing with cultural differences, social reckoning, environmental issues, and personal challenges. Specifically, it will cover aspects of working within a Russian cultural setting and overcoming social barriers.The paper also presents coping strategies for long periods of time spent away from home in remote places with extremes in weather beyond the normal experience of most Australians. For example, dealing with the effects of the spring thaw and coping with temperature ranges of -45 to +45¦C.Lastly, and possibly most importantly, there will be a focus on the role of translators. They have the power to make an engineer everyoneÆs best friend or, on your behalf, to order cold chicken liver and heart salad for lunch. If an engineering team can establish a working relationship with translators, they can become an invaluable asset and both on and off site.CITATION:Hausler, T, 2013. Pilot plant work has played a major role in the process development and design phase of the Iscor Heavy Minerals project. The pilot plant campaigns have been aimed at three process areas, namely primary beneficiation (wet gravity circuits), heavy mineral separation and ilmenite smelting. A process development structure was put in place, and the various pilot plants designed and built. A number of pilot campaigns were conducted during the project phase since 1995, and most of the key objectives were achieved. Various other valuable ælessonsÆ were learnt, and were incorporated in the full-scale plant designs, or used to change operating philosophies, equipment choices et cetera. The cost and durations of the pilot runs were significant, and an analysis indicated that the major risk and technology area of smelting has contributed more than 70 per cent of the total cost.

When controlling the ventilation process in a deep mine some knowledge of the sensitivity of the air volume output to changes in the resistances of network side branches is of great advantage.Sensitivity is taken to mean the limit of the differential quotient AV /ART where AV. is the change in air output in the i--h side branch caused by a change of resistance LI R in the r-th side branch. A method Is presen- ted for determining any arbitrary co- lumn of the sensitivity matrix. A network interpretation of this met- hod was developed in which an ancilla- ry network additional the basic network is constructed and solved, giving an analysis of the sensitivity signs de- pending on the structure of the network.

Massive sulphide mineralisation at the Miriam prospect, near Coolgardie, Western Australia, is fracture-controlled and associated with disseminated sulphides near the basal contact of an ultramafic lens. The lens is peridotitic in composition with a pyroxenitic zone at its base, and lies within a sequence of altered high-Mg basalts and pillowed tholeiitic basalts. Recrystallisation of the ultramafic rock has resulted in the development of secondary olivine. The average composition of the sulphide fraction of massive ore is Cu = 4.4%, Co = 0.3%, Ni = 23.0%, Fe = 31.8%, S = 40.6%, consisting of the supergene assemblage violarite-pyrite to a depth of 210 m.

The economic climate of the Canadian mining industry forced an increased interest in rapid, continuous excavation techniques for hard rock formations. The potential applications and advantages of continuous mining over the present drill- blast-muck labour intensive cyclical methods are considerable. Noranda investigated an electrical technique, Plasma Blasting showing considerable promise for mining hard rock. The background of the technology and the theory of blasting rock with electricity is described. The Plasma Blasting process is based on the fast discharge of stored electrical energy into a small amount of electrolyte, suitably located in the rock. The electrical energy converts the electrolyte into high pressure plasma, which expands very quickly, thereby, generating a shock wave. This shock wave produces a stress field inside the rock, resulting in a blast similar to that made by chemical explosives, but without the deleterious fumes. Noranda is currently blasting boulders of 4-5 tonnes and is at present constructing a mobile, autonomous secondary rock breaker for underground and open pit applications. Tests on in situ hard rock formations will lead to the development of a continuous mining machine. Production rates of 500 tonnes per man-shift could be obtained with such a machine.

The mineralised members of the Brockman Iron Formation mined at Mt Whaleback are overlain and underlain by shale horizons. To maximise resource recovery, waste movement within the life of mine plan will total approximately 3.3 billion tonnes. Approximately 15 per cent of waste materials contain zones with varying amounts of sulfides and carbon and are referred to as æreactive shaleÆ. Reactive shale has the potential to self-heat and can react with some explosives, resulting in spontaneous explosion. Sulfide rich zones also have the potential to generate acid rock drainage (ARD). Successful mining of reactive shale requires constant co-ordination between the geology, mine planning, mining and environment departments. Safe storage of reactive shale is the focus of ongoing research. Since the mid-1990s, a number of trials have been undertaken at Mt Whaleback in order to further the understanding of the physical and chemical properties of reactive shale. This paper summarises some of these trials, and discusses key learnings arising from interpretation of results. Ultimately, the learnings from this research will provide the guidelines for successful storage of reactive shale.

Iron ore samples selected from the Deepdale, Iron Prince and Mt. Newman ore bodies have been pelletised on a pilot scale plant and subsequently reduced under laboratory conditions by hydrogen or carbon monoxide. Pellets approximately 1 cm in diameter have been reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 5000- 900¦C and the results examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95% reduction the rate of reduction could be described by a transport con- trolled porous model, in which the effective diffusivities of hydrogen in theòpr¦duct layer and the reaction zone are filar. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. ve 95% reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation_of retained wustite or fayalite. Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 7500 - 900¦C showed that the rate eduction by carbon monoxide was approximately five times slower than the rate by hydrogen. The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the properties of the pellets, which may account for the ely conflicting results that have been obtained in previous investigation on porous pellets.

Corrosion is a chemical or electro-chemical attack on a metal by the surrounding medium, and it can be stated in general terms that a non-corrodible metal possesses that property either because there is no chemical action between it and the medium, or because the medium reacts quickly with the metal to produce a thin protective coating.When iron or steel is attacked by dilute mineral acids, for example, the products of the reaction are soluble and the formation of a protective film cannot take place; on the other hand, rusting produces a porous film which flakes away and offers little protection to the underlying metal. However, when chromium is alloyed with iron, its resistance to corrosion is improved because the films produced on such alloys become more adherent and tenacious as the proportion of chromium is increased. In surface mining operations, the ease with which a muckpile may be dug is a dominant factor in mining efficiency. Within broad limits this is largely independent of the fragment size dis- tribution, since the equipment used to move the broken rock is generally larger than in underground mines. In such cases, muck- pile shape and voids ratio within a muckpile heavily influence mine productivity. In a particular operation, the muckpile shape after blasting should be tailored to the digging equipment being used. A front- end loader is best suited to a low, flat-lying, loose muckpile, because of its fairly good mobility and small break-out force with its bucket. In contrast, a rope shovel lacks mobility, generates a much larger break-out force with its bucket, and fills its bucket in a vertical filling motion. Therefore, it is ideally suited to well fragmented, steep faces. In situations where a dragline is used, the requirement for a suitable muckpile depends on the operat- ing scheme of the dragline. For a conventional highwall key method the preferred work- ing level of the dragline is the same as the highwall, so that the dragline may sit over its key. In this situation, the ideal muck- pile shape involves relatively little displacement of the fragmented rock, with a minimal "power trough" at the back of the blast. In throw blasting, on the other hand, it is desirable to cast as much of the spoil as possible across the pit. It is then necessary to optimize the blast design by maximizing the throw percentage under any necessary constraints (e.g. damage, vibration, flyrock, explosive cost).
