The Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada has emerged as a major new province for diamond mineralisation in less than three years. This is primarily the product of a diligent search in the form of a scientifically based exploration effort. However other factors, including positive aspects of the business and the legal environment have also been identified as assisting the exploration process. In my view these have increased the likelihood of diamond mining becoming a major new industry for Canada. The supportive role of various government agencies has been important. In addition, the character of many of the joint venture deals that have been done has provided an attractive setting for the capital intensive evaluation and development work that is now required to bring the diamond discoveries into production. Perhaps of equal importance is that with the recognition that is being given to the success of the NWT diamond ventures, Canadian explorers are continuing to attract new risk capital for further exploration. This paper attempts to model and quantify the probability of exploration success translating into successful mine development.

As a direct result of the Mining Industries need to improve efficiency and production in Open Pit type operations, the size of haulage units have increased dramatically. This trend has continued such, that the majority of dump trucks operating in Open Pit operations are in the 170 ton class. Continued mining in existing locations has meant that the increase in vertical lift and resultant grades, and increases in hauling distances are making electric drive systems unsuitable. This is largely due to the electric drive systems heat limitations on major propulsion components. With these mining requirements in view and the present limitations on electric drive systems in mind, Komatsu have been developing the Komatsu HD1600M. On Monday, October 25th, 1971 at approximately 12.15 a.m. the night shift proceeding underground discovered smoke at No.1 and No-3 cut throughs on the eastern side of the belt heading and in close proximity to the upcast shaft. Attempts to control the fire continued throughout the morning; as the position underground altered various procedures were adopted in an effort to contain and control the fire. Despite these efforts at approx. 12.40 p.m. a sudden change occurred which made it necessary to withdraw all workmen from underground, the vicinity of the Tunnel entrances and upcast shaft. Sealing of the mine at the entrances was the only remaining alternative. Several boreholes were put down to enable sampling of the atmosphere and air temperatures to be taken. This was essential as a guide to determining when conditions were suitable to allow exploration of the area using mine rescue self contained breathing apparatus.

The Gympie Province is a unique tectono-stratigraphic unit which does not fit into the overall palaeogeographic pattern of the New England Fold Belt (NEFB), and part of it has been proposed as an exotic terrane more closely linked to New Zealand. From E to W the Gympie Province comprises 6 distinct units which can be evaluated as suspect or exotic terranes.

The Rum Jungle Uranium Province is lo cated on the western margin of the Pine Creek Geosyncline approximately 60km south of Darwin. Uranium was discovered in the Embayment area (Whites Deposit) in 1949, spurring active ex- ploration and leading to the discovery of the Rum Jungle Creek South Deposit in 1959. With the discovery of the Alligator Rivers Uranium Field, new criteria in the understanding of the controls for mineralization sparked a re- surgence of exploration activities in the Rum Jungle area. Uranerz Australia Pty. Ltd. (UAL) commenced exploration in the area in the late 1970's in joint venture and in its own right. Two domal Archaean granitic complexes, the Rum Jungle and Waterhouse Complexes, domi- nate the area. They are unconformably mantled by Lower Proterozoic sediments metamorphosed to middle to upper greenschist grade. The Lower Proterozoic sediments are unconformably over- lain by remnant blocks of Carpentarian sand- stone, generally preserved in downfaulted blocks. Over a six year period extensive geolo- gical, geochemical and geophysical programs were conducted to reinvestigate previous target areas and locate new prospective zones. Exten- sive shallow bedrock drilling showed that lo- cally the stratigraphic succession is quite variable and cannot always be divided into an ordered succession for correlation with groups and formations established by the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR). Deformational events resulting in intraformational recumbent folding and overthrusting also account for repetition of certain lithotypes.

Narrow vein tabular orebodies are prone to mining induced seismicity. The Tasmania Mine is a complex example of a seismically active tabular orebody, where the contrasting material properties of the host strata and of the orebody itself, serve to exacerbate the seismic response. Analysis of a continuous record of seismicity over a period of seven years has provided significant insight into the fundamental mechanics of the rock mass. Understanding seismicity to permit safe extraction of the orebody has been enhanced by instrumentation of rock mass behaviour in response to mining and mining induced seismicity. It is the purpose of this paper to explore that understanding in respect to the adoption of an alternative down-hole Avoca stoping method for use in particular circumstances.Intensive instrumentation of the Tasmania Mine over a period of four years has provided insight into the behaviour of the rock mass in response to extraction of the narrow vein orebody it encompasses. A range of instruments have been installed in clusters or single installations in order to measure changing stress conditions and the impact of those changes on the rock mass and the reinforcement system.Instruments are often installed in very close proximity to active production stoping. While it has been possible to observe the impact of the mining and mining induced seismicity at very close quarters, instruments installed in these locations are vulnerable to damage and consequently, the level of instrumentation is high. Instruments are continuously logged, typically on a six hourly basis coinciding with the end of regular blasting times. The response of the instrumentation to changed rock mass conditions is considered against the background of development and production blasting and against the seismic record to assess the viability of downhole Avoca stoping.CITATION:Hills, P B and Walton, R J, 2012. In the southern part of China, car-bonate rocks outcrop in large areas. Ka-rst develops owing to hot, humid climate and heavy rainfall. In deposits of coal, iron, bauxite, tungsten, tin and base metals exist karst formations within or near the mineralization zones. Three pro-blems should be solved in the mine cons-truction in karst region. The first is the drainage and safety control of karst groundwater. Different methods are used to cope with local hydrogeological con-ditions, e.g. drainage from surface by submersible pumps in wells penetrating groundwater seams; drainage from under-ground drifts which intercept groundwa-ter flow with clusters of holes drilled into karst aquifer or with vertical ho-les drilled from surface to the drift underground; cement grouting to block off channels or to seal a part of aqui-fer; groundwater pollution control; etc. With those measures many Chinese mines of tremendous waterflow were success-fully developed and valuable experiences were gained. The second problem is the stability of buildings deteriorated by surface subsidence due to drainage. The occurence and distribution of surface cavings by drainage were studied.

Over the last decade heap leaching with a cement binder has allowed the economical leaching of low grade gold ores of less than 2 grams/tonne. Despite the continued use of cement as an agglomeration aid, numerous leaching operations continue to experience channelling and blinding problems. This paper describes the development of polymeric agglomeration aids, Extract Ore 9760 and 9960, which when used as a partial cement or lime replacement can result in a higher rate of and/or a higher total gold recovery in plant evaluations. Extract Ore in combination with cement acts to produce a stronger agglomerate which results in reduced fines migration during leaching and helps prevent blinding of the heap. Both of these changes will give a more even flow of cyanide solution throughout the heap and improve solution contact efficiency within the ore. Polymeric agglomeration aid programs are now being used by heap leaching operations in three different countries. A summary of benefits identified at some of these operations are presented in this paper.

Indigenous brown coals, which provide a readily available primary energy source, have played a significant part in the industrial development of Victoria. The deposits located in the Latrobe Valley compare in extent with other major deposits of brown coal in the world. Smaller but valuable deposits occur at Stradbroke, Gelliondale, Anglesea and Bacchus Marsh. Extensive drilling, aided by geophysical surveys, and detailed analyses of coal samples, have enabled the extent and quality of these Tertiary deposits to be Defined.

Pillar mining methods at the Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations are not new. Since mining commenced on Pasminco's leases at the turn of the century virtually every pillar extraction method tried throughout the world has been used. Much of the remaining mineral resource in the Pasminco Broken Hill leases is contained in pillars.However, due to the on-going need for mechanisation with bulk mining methods, and the very peculiar physical circumstances surrounding the formation of these pillars, their exploitation requires the development of a virtually new method based on excavation technology not previously used in the Australian mining industry. Trials of the method are to take place at the southern operations during 1991.

The Prestea Goldfields Ltd of Ghana, West Africa has produced over 170 t of gold with average grade of 11 g/t since 1912. The deposits occur in a wide shear zone which closely follow the Birimian-Tarkwaian contact. Both the Birimian and Tarkwaian systems are of Precambrian age. Underground exploration is carried out to delineate ore bodies by means of AX size diamond drilling at 50 m sampling intervals. After the orebody has been delineated, development work is carried out by exposing the gold reef. Channel sampling is then carried out at about 3 m intervals in both the stope and stope drives. A channel sample length is commonly 0.6 in, but may vary depending on physical characteristics of the reef. The values of channel samples are linearly combined to obtain the average reef or slope values and/or widths of the exposed sections. The sampling practice and methods of improving the efficacy of sampling at the mine are described.

Filter Presses are used in a wide range of process industries where high quality filtration at elevated pressure is required. This is mainly due to the fact that modern presses are fitted with polypropylene filter plates which combine excellent corrosion resistance with high mechanical strength. Filtration pressures of 15 Bar at ambient temperatures are common ensuring low residual moisture content and easily manageable filter cakes. Recessed polypropylene chamber plates have been in use for the last 15-20 years and have replaced plates and frames almost entirely. The latest development in plate technology is the polypropylene membrane plate. These provide lower moisture content cakes at significantly higher capacity than recessed chamber plates. Because of their stayboss-free construction, membrane plates provide excellent cake washing facilities which make them suitable for a wide range of process applications. Membrane plates are available both as fixed and exchangeable membrane types. Overhung membranes can be fitted to existing plates manufactured in cast iron or plastic to enhance the performance of existing presses.

The relevant characteristic of the evolution of the Pacific continental margin of South America during the Mesozoic-Early Cenozoic has been tectonic segmentation. This has controlled suc-cesive episodes of sedimentary accumula-tion, extrusive and intrusive magmatism and deformation that ocurred at conver-vergent plate edges. During this inter-val, at least three main transverse boundaries played an important role conditioning the existence of paleo-segments of different longitudinal extent at various Periods. These probably correspond to deep-seated faults in the Huancabamba Deflection and at the Arica-Santa Cruz Line; the third boundary projects westward to the Chile Ridge. Tectonic activity appears to have been continous at the Huancabamba Deflection at least since the Triassic. The Arica-Santa Cruz Line was probably an active boundary during the Triassic and Cretaceous; the southernmost boundary may have started to be active at the end of the Jurassic. This tectonic activity has determined the subsidence - uplift and paleogeographic conditions of the paleosegments.

An outline of the ventilation and refrigeration requirements of deep South African gold mines is presented. This is followed by a brief description of the history of controlled recirculation in mines and the practical and economic benefits such schemes can offer. The potential hazard of a fire in a recirculation system is discussed.The major part of the paper describes the first large-scale field trial of controlled recirculation to be conducted in South Africa. Emphasis is placed on the monitoring system that was used for data acquisition during the trial, and also on a safety system designed to shut off the recirculation fans in the event of a fire.The paper concludes with a review of the latest development work taking place on recirc-ulation safety systems.

Heavy minerals are mined from two fossil strandlines on the southern Swan Coastal Plain. The Capel shoreline, 7 km inland, and the Yoganup shoreline, 15 km inland are arcuate, northwest-facing, and remote from the modern coast. Based on foraminiferal and molluscan assemblages, the shorelines are probably of Pliocene age. The Yoganup shoreline is adjacent to the Whicher Scarp, which is cut into the Leederville Formation (Lower Cretaceous) at the southern boundary of the Swan Coastal Plain. Stratigraphic relations and detailed sedimentology have been studied from temporary exposures in the Yoganup Extended and Yoganup North mines, within a strandline complex at 27 m and 18-33 m above sea level respectively. Heavy minerals were deposited in thin, shallowing-upward sequences along a wave-dominated clastic shoreline cut into pre-Cainozoic sediments. Lithofacies units deposited in eolian, foreshore, shoreface and lagoonal environments are the most significant sites of heavy mineral accumulation. The data collected provide a basis for further exploration.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal's new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.

As part of a large AMIRA project, an on-line moisture meter was installed at two mine sites in Central Queensland. This project investigated the factors which control the moisture content of coarse (>0.5 mm) coal from the centrifuges used in conventional coal preparation plants. It was placed immediately after the first centrifuge to isolate the factors pertaining to one machine and its feed.The meter was found to be accurate and precise when compared with manual and mechanical sampling methods. The Grubbs estimator technique indicated that its precision is better than 0.3 per cent at the 95 per cent confidence limit.It has been identified that:1. the variability of the measured moisture contents of coarse coal can be described by normal distributions. Standard deviations of about 0.6 per cent are common; and2. the treatment of the coarse coal on the drain and rinse screens immediately prior to the centrifuge can affect the final moisture content.

In the stability assessment of open pit walls, geotechnical engineers have to deal with uncertainty related to structural geology, rock mechanical parameters, groundwater and so on. This uncertainty will immediately and significantly impact on wall stability assessment and therefore. influence mineral recovery and ultimately the financial return of open pit mining. However, the conventional factor of safety applied to measure the stability of slopes and the relevant analytical computer packages cannot quantitatively consider the variability or uncertainty of the input data. As a supplement, therefore, geotechnical engineers have begun to apply probability to the stability assessment of open pit walls over the last two decades. To-date unfortunately, no powerful computer package is available to geotechnical engineers to conduct the probability analysis of slope stability. This paper presents a computer package of probability analysis for rock and soil slope stability. In this computer package, the strength parameters of rock and/or soil material such as cohesion, friction angle and unit weight of the different rock and/or soil type domain in a complex structural geology environment can be considered as the basic input random variables. Groundwater level can also be taken into account as a random variable in this package. Two `rigorous' limit equilibrium solutions, the Morgenstern/Price method and the Sarma method, can be used to calculate the factor of safety during Monte Carlo Simulation applied in this program. Five types of probability distribution are included in this package for the user to simulate basic input random variables. Two realistic cases from BHP Iron Ore are used to illustrate this package.
