Occasionally additives are used in the wet processing of iron ore tailings and slurries, for examples, in the thickening of tailings with flocculant to recover process water, and in the smooth pumping of concentrated slurries. They can mitigate slurry behavioural issues that could significantly affect the plant operation and production. The nature of iron ore business requiring the plant to have a high throughput to be economical, large amounts of slurries are therefore processed every day. The quantity of additives needed will correspondingly be large and so are the associated costs. This could have a significant impact on the plant profitability. If additives are used they must be very costeffective. NaOH is among the lowest cost chemicals available, at ~US$400 per ton. In this paper we will look at use of composite additives involving phosphate compounds with NaOH added to reduce the cost, for the control of iron ore slurries rheology. The NaOH worked synergistically with the phosphate compounds. The effectiveness of these composite additives in viscosity reduction can be neutralised by another cheap additive such as lime or a Ca(II)-based salt turning the slurries back to being a paste. Tailings paste is an ideal material for safe storage in the dam. These composite additives can also be used to facilitate the recovery of iron ore at commercial grade from tailings (Leong, 2020a, 2021a).

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. It gives me great pleasure to talk to you today about a pet subject of mine, on when to mill and when to leach gold ores. According to Gold Fields Mineral Services of London, gold production in the United States in 1989 amounted to about 8.5 million ounces (259t), an increase of 29 per cent over 1988 and 67 per cent over 1987. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reports that from the major producing states of Nevada, California, Montana, and Alaska, some3.2million ounces of the 1989 production were produced from milling gold ores and 2.3 million ounces from heap or dump leaching. Ap- proximately 45 million tons of ore were milled and 140 million tons of ore were heap or dump leached.

The four major contracts for the construction of Museum Station are: 1) Installation of Soldier Piles, 2) Structural Contract including the temporary support, 3) Architectural Finishes which include Electrical and Mechanical Services and 4) Supply and Installation of lifts and escalators. Specific areas of interest include the fabrication, installation and removal of temporary support steelwork, the monitoring of ground loading, and the interface between the structure and. the temporary support. The information collated during construction confirmed the design assumptions and criteria. No major changes'were required in the design of the construction methods. The open cut excavation and construction of this major structure in an inner city area was significant by any standard and was successfully completed with minimum disruption to the public and without damage to adjoining or surrounding property.

BackgroundIn March 1990 Pasminco resolved to replace and increase the capacity of the underground pumping system at the Southern Operations, Broken Hill. The existing pump station was built 23 years ago while the rising main had been in service for 38 years and was subject to frequent failure.The old system was a conventional slurry/clear water separation and multi-stage pumping system. It was inadequate in the following areas:ò insufficient capacity to handle current and expected future flows;ò unable to consistently dewater lower production areas; ò pumping capacity restricted sandfilling rates;ò dirty water dams had insufficient settling capacity and were difficult to de-sludge;ò the operating costs of dewatering were high; ò it was labour intensive; andò it did not offer enough protection to the 25 level loading station.

This paper examines some of the important aspects of mineral taxation policies and practices, with reference to the mining tax regimes of selected Pacific Rim countries (see Tables 1 and 2). The following subjects are addressed:what is æmineral taxationÆ?, basis for mineral taxation, types of mineral taxes, objectives of the mineral taxation regime, best practices, and mineral royalties. Many countries, in some cases with the encouragement and assistance of international funding agencies, are actively assessing the international competitiveness of their mining tax regimes with a view to attracting investment. However, these countries recognise that the mining tax regime is not the only consideration that is taken into account by prospective investors. The countryÆs geological prospectivity, physical infrastructure, labour force, political risk, and regulatory system are also important factors in the investment decision making process. Although it is probably true that an attractive mining tax regime will not necessarily attract mineral investment, there is a real possibility that an unattractive regime can drive away investment. For example, Hugo Dummett, general manager for discovery at BHP, hinted recently that BHP could cease exploration in Russia in the absence of positive tax changes. Dummett is reported as saying that if taxes æend up being as onerous as they are now, we really have to rethink why we are hereÆ (Mining Journal, London, November 27, 1998).

Sasol Roche Blasting Services (SRBS) and its former owners have been in the process of developing and utilising low-density explosives over the last ten years. Many blasts have been fired in varying strata types in a number of mining operations. This has led to a good understanding of the product and the best methods to exploit its characteristics when designing blasts. Unlike some other low-density products, SoftLOAD« is a homogeneous mix that is easily handled and able to be loaded at high load rates. This paper discusses the physics of SoftLOAD« low-density explosives and how through correct utilisation, blasting outcomes can be significantly improved. It also touches on the various side benefits that can provide the blast designer with a more controlled blast.

During the last 20 years, manufacturers of Australian iron have given increasing attention to development of external markets for processed blast furnace slag. Slag has been in widespread use overseas and data on the performance of Australian slag in concrete lave shown it is suitable for that use. Chemical and physical properties of typical Australian slag products including air cooled, granulated and pelletised slag are discussed and compared with local natural aggregates. Special attention is given to pumping achieve- ments with slag concretes and the observed durability of concrete after many years service. More'recent applications for granulated slag as a sand replacement are discussed. It is concluded that'whilst more wide- spread use of slag is possible, the cost of marketing and transporting slag are likely to restrict opportunities unless for local usage.

A comprehensive feasibility study should be submitted as part of the loan application to a financial institution for debt funding of a proposed project. Its scope should include technical, costing, marketing and other aspects pertinent to the project. The technical presentation should be sufficiently detailed to show that the assumpt- ions concerning future performance are realistic. A lender needs to be convinced that the capital and operating cost estimates are conservatively based with adequate allowances included for contingency and escalation. The marketing assumptions determine the level of revenue from which operating cost, debt servicing, and other commitments are to be met. The foregoing aspects establish the economic viability of the project, and are therefore relevant to the risk assessment and cash flow analysis carried out by a potential lender which determine his ultimate lending Decision

Consistent slag blow end point detection remains one of the challenges in the Peirce-Smith converters at Mount Isa MinesÆ Copper Smelter. Under blowing results in foaming on copper blow and carry forward of oxide skims to the anode furnace. Over blowing results in high copper losses to the slag. Both present safety issues and contribute to lower copper production. The end points of the slag making phases are assessed by inspection of a bar sample. A bar sample is a thin accretion layer that adheres to a steel bar when it is inserted into the tuyere while the converter is blowing. This method is biased and subjective, so there is heavy reliance on operator experience. The Semtech Optical Process Control (OPC) system was installed in early 2002 for converter slag blow end point detection. Initial plant trials did not improve all aspects of converter operations, and uptake by operators was poor, so the system was not used. In early 2005, the Semtech OPC system was re-visited and another short trial was conducted to evaluate the permanent use of the system for slag and copper blow end point detection. During this trial, the Semtech OPC method was found to be superior to bar sampling for slag blow end point detection. The implementation and refurbishment of the Semtech OPC system has resulted in plant improvements and given a better insight into converter operation during blowing. Oxide skim generation carried forward to the anode furnace has been shown to decrease with increasing compliance with Semtech OPC. Some of the expected improvements to converter operation were not found to be significant. Semtech OPC is now well received and utilised by converter operators. Individual paper available only. "Decision-making in mining is a challenging task. Optimal decisions regarding shovel and truck allocations, aligned with the optimal short-term production schedules, are crucial in keeping the operations in line with the company’s long-term objectives. In this paper, we present two main modelling components as the means to achieve near-optimal operational plans: a mixed integer linear goal programming model to allocate trucks and shovels to mining faces over a shift-by-shift basis so that operating costs are minimised and resource utilisations are maximised through the planning horizon a discrete-event simulation model to investigate the behaviour of a truck-and-shovel haulage system in the presence of uncertainty within mining operations. The goals integrated into the mathematical model are to: maximise production minimise deviations from the target head grade minimise deviations in tonnage feed to the processing plants from the desired feed minimise operating cost.The mathematical model provides shovel assignments and the target productions as an input to the discrete event simulation model while meeting the desired goals and constraints of the mining operation. We illustrate the applications of the discrete event simulation model by presenting a large-scale oil sands case study. A laminar-flow furnace technique was used to study the combustion of 37-53 µm size fraction of Woodlawn copper concentrate containing 7.4 per cent zinc, 5.0 per cent lead and 22.5 per cent copper. Factors studied included the effect of time, temperature and the distribution of volatile elements between the panicles and the fume. Air was used for most of the work but a few tests were carried out using 1 per cent oxygen in nitrogen. Chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron and optical microscopy of polished sections were used to characterize the reaction products.When the concentrate was combusted at low temperatures (800-900°C), the fume was rich in lead. At higher temperatures, this was diluled by increasing amounts of zinc and copper. 70 per cent of the zinc, 60 per cent of the lead and 40 per cent of the copper were found in the fume after oxidation at 1400°C. Lead, zinc and copper were present in the fume as anglesite (PbSO4), zincite (ZnO) and cuprite (Cu2O) respectively. The major phases present in the panicles were magnetite (Fe3O4) and/or cuprospinel (CuFe2O4), with some zincite and cuprite.Elemental copper was found in the particles oxidized in 1 per cent oxygen. Possible vapour species responsible for the vaporization are discussed.

EMF measurements were performed in the temperature range of 933-1095 K to determine the thermodynamic properties of oxygen dissolution in liquid lead and lead-tin alloys with tin in the dilute concentration range of 0 to 6 atom per cent. The oxygen in the Pb-O system was varied by equilibrating with (PbO) slag, and that in the Pb-O-Sn system was varied with the addition of lead oxide. Wagner's interaction parameter approach was used to evaluate the self interaction parameter and ternary interaction parameters at different temperatures, to yield: E8(pb) = 97.35 - 113.27 x 103/t Eo(pb) = 139 - 20.616 x104/1' Quasichemical formulation was employed to yield Inf to reveal the effect of tin on oxygen in lead. Results have been predicted on the basis of classical models and those obtained using the QCT approach of Alcock and Richardson at Z=2 have been found to agree with the experimental Data.

This analysis attempts to reconcile existing ecological theories, rehabilitation planning goals and implementation constraints in the form of a rehabilitation paradigm that considers potential and pragmatic ecosystem transformation pathways. The framework prioritises multiple developmental scenarios for post-disturbed landscapes within a continuum of ecological outcomes. A feature of the framework is that ænovelÆ ecosystems and agro-ecosystems, having a range of commercial and societal values, are valid outcomes spanning the conceptual divide between the ecological functions of under-rehabilitated versus re-instated ænaturalÆ landscapes, especially in a changing environment. Landscape suitability analyses are considered to be fundamental to the incorporation of regional landscape and climate in the implementation of land rehabilitation and management strategies. Altogether, the paradigm could facilitate the identification of widely pertinent rehabilitation goals having direct implications at the regional scale of restoration ecology and acceptance of the need for ongoing commitment to the management of disturbed environments.CITATION:Audet, P, Doley, D and Mulligan, D R, 2012. Electro-Slag Remelting (ESR) is a process capable of producing ingots with much lower centre-line segregation and better internal soundness than conventional ingot casting processes, as well as lower inclusion and sulfur concentrations. This process is commonly used for alloyed steels intended for critical applications like components of marine turbines, supercritical powerplants and rocket motor casings. It involves melting a metal electrode using electrical resistive heating in a slag pool and re-solidification of the resulting metal droplets beneath the slag layer, forming an ingot. Conventional ESR fluxes consist primarily of CaF2, Al2O3 and CaO, along with minor concentrations of SiO2, MgO etc. The emission of fluoride vapour from the molten slag causes several environmental and health problems, triggering a need to develop and reduce the fluoride content in the ESR flux. The present study aims to develop low-CaF2 alternatives to commercial ESR fluxes without compromising on productivity and the surface quality of the refined ingot. Thus, the modification in chemical composition needs to satisfy properties like electrical resistivity, viscosity and liquidus temperature, essential for efficient ESR operation. Since electrical resistivity and viscosity are highly dependent on the ionic structure of the molten slag, it is important to understand the effect of compositional modification on the structure of the flux. The present study employs Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy to investigate the structural variations in the modified fluxes, especially the effect of changing SiO2 concentration, in comparison with conventional CaF2-rich fluxes. Additionally, thermal analysis (Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)) has been carried out to characterise the melting behaviour of the fluxes. The findings are compared with simulations carried out using the FactSage™ software, ver 8.3 (GTT Technologies, Aachen, Germany). Simultaneous analysis of liquidus temperature and the structure is expected to help in identifying the practical suitability of modified ESR flux compositions for industrial implementation.

The occurrence of metallic minerals in Australia to the time of the proclamation of South Australia as a Colony in 1836 was unknown. It is, therefore, perhaps, surprising that British settlers arriving in the Coromandel included among their number a German scientist Johannes Menge who had been appointed by the South Australian Company to the post of Mine and Quarry Agent and Geologist on 1 July 1836. His instructions were to `explore the natural productions of the Colony above and below ground and to superintend the working of quarries of stone and slate, the boring for water, metal, lead, coal and other mines at a salary of ú150 per annum for one year and for as much longer as the Company require your services not however exceeding five years'. In the event, he was to have little influence on those matter.

The last decade has seen a dramatic change in the. size and complexity of mining and mineral processing projects in Austral- asia. Major projects of today are vastly different from major projects of the 19.50's. This change has in turn resulted in a change in the role-of consultants whose contributions have been increasingly in the provision of specialist services and less in the form of overall project design and construction supervision. It is anticipated that, the specialist function will continue to represent the principle mode for consultant participation in major, projects. However, by means' of international affiliation, the development of comprehensive engineering and project management capabilities and possibly as a result of Government intervention, it is expected ,that local consultants will assume an increasing degree of participation in.the overall project design and supervision Function.

In-situ leaching of gold deposits has not become an option largely as a result the lack of suitability of cyanide as a lixiviant due to sluggish kinetics and high dependence on the availability of oxygen. A second problem area is the excessive cost of drilling the required number of injection and production wells needed to service a wellfield capable of maintaining any significant throughput or providing and acceptable level of gold production. Well spacing in in-situ leaching operations is limited by solution life, dissolution rate, and the need for solution control. With cyanide the life of an active solution capable of dissolving significant gold is severely limited by the availability of oxygen which cannot be readily replaced while the solution remains underground. The extremely slow gold dissolution rate also necessitates excessive contact periods in order to dissolve coarse gold.

The Mt Lyell Mine at Queenstown, Tasmania was re-opened in 1995 by Copper Mines of Tasmania Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mt Lyell Mining Co Ltd. The re-opening followed over 100 years of copper and gold mining at Mt Lyell. Major changes in practice were implemented across the site. Preventing further damage to an already disturbed environment was a major priority. Sublevel caving, at a lower cut-off grade, replaced open stoping for the deep underground mining. Development and later stoping are handled by a contractor, National Mine Management Pty Ltd, in the largest underground contract awarded at the time. Large scale sublevel caving was new to Mt Lyell and not widely practised in Australia, requiring studies and systematic development of the method, particularly in drilling and blasting. Rehabilitation and upgrading of mine infrastructure have been and will continue to be a challenge. The mine has, since 1995, returned to being a stable producer with potential for growth.
