The approach to the disposal and storage of mine tailings is slowly evolving. Tailings disposal has been based on minimising short-term capital and operating costs, with rehabilitation costs discounted by the application of a high discount factor in a net present value approach to accounting. This has led to the widespread adoption of surface tailings storage facilities (TSFs) to store slurried tailings delivered by robust and cheap centrifugal pumps and pipelines. Depending on the site climate, rate of rise of the tailings, nature of the tailings and the extent to which supernatant water is removed from the surface TSF, the tailings may or may not dewater, densify and gain strength. High rates of rise of dilute tailings to a facility used to store both tailings and supernatant water results in a wet, low-density, soft tailings deposit that not only occupies a large storage volume but also presents rehabilitation difficulties. A low tailings density results in high containment wall costs, very high rehabilitation costs and a low potential for future land use or ecological function. Overall, the cost of slurried tailings disposal, thought to be low, is actually high. However, low rates of rise, even of dilute tailings, in a dry climate with efficient supernatant water removal can produce a dewatered, high-density, stiff tailings deposit that may occupy a large footprint but to shallow depth that is relatively easy to rehabilitate. There are advantages in dewatering tailings in the processing plant to recover process water and chemicals, facilitate tailings disposal in a more solid form and facilitate rehabilitation. However, the cost of dewatering in-plant can be high, and the process water may not lend itself to reuse. There are also advantages in removing supernatant water to facilitate solar and wind drying of exposed tailings, although water is lost to evaporation and the dried tailings may best be harvested prior to inundation by fresh tailings or rainfall run-off. This paper discusses the background and trends towards the elimination of conventional surface slurried TSFs, with examples presented of the management of black coal and other tailings, including those that are clay mineral-rich.CITATION:Williams, D J, 2015. We are moving into an era where we experience the consequences of the skills crisis û namely many resource models have been generated by inexperienced people under pressure to deliver high quality resource estimates in unsupported environments, often without technical mentors. These resource models form the basis of our decision to pursue actual mining. This begs the question: how valid are the resource models that form the basis of our mining decisions? This paper presents various model validation tools such as comparison of input and output statistics, swath plots, sectional or bench comparisons between drill holes and models as well as a variety of other approaches. Each model validation tool currently used in industry is examined:how the tool generates results,what assumptions exist,what constitutes a pass/fail in the test, and what interpretations to consider when using the validation tool. Each validation toolÆs suitability and the inherent flaws in the underlying assumptions are also discussed. These are supported with examples of good versus bad validations. Our principles based reporting codes provide flexibility in how models are generated and what approaches and/or parameters are used to generate resource estimates. This flexibility works well when used by experienced practitioners. However, our reporting codes assume a level of experience not always available in the current skills crisis. This paper seeks to provide minimum model validation prerequisites for model acceptance and suitability, regardless of the resource analystÆs experience. As we move forward, our immediate challenge is to ensure our baseline resource models are material, transparent and competent.

The load capacity of a friction bolt has long been regarded as 4 t/m of embedment for ground support design analysis and supported by in situ pull test results. In recent years, the authors have observed lower pull test results or inconsistent results which were rarely sighted in the early 2000s. The lower pull test results indicated in some cases that reliable friction bolt capacity (≥90 per cent of results) is closer to 3 t/m of embedment with some geotechnical engineers adjusting the ground support parameters in the design work accordingly. This can be in contrast with other mines which reliably obtain 4 t/m (or greater) using the same suppliers bolt in similar ground conditions. This raised several questions: • What is the effect of poor installation (bolt twist or bolt hole deviation)? • Does the performance of friction bolts vary in different rock masses? • Does bolt performance vary between suppliers? • What effect does increased jumbo feed/percussion/rotation settings have? • Have the bolt dimensions or steel strip width changed? • Have the physical bolt properties changed? • Have the steel properties changed? This paper was aimed to answer as many of these questions as possible and discuss each variable in detail. This project included friction bolt trials at various mine sites across Australia, multiple friction bolt manufacturers, steel manufacturers and laboratory analysis. The paper also includes discussion on what the authors consider best practice for pull testing. It should be noted, the terms ‘friction stabiliser’ and ‘split set’ used in this paper are used in a generic manner and is not linked to any specific ground support supplier. Whilst its acknowledged within the industry the term split set and friction stabiliser is used interchangeably, the authors acknowledge that the term split set is a trademark of Split Set Mining Systems and has been used in context in this paper.

For an optimal design and control of metallurgical processes, a deep understanding of the thermodynamics of the governing reactions is required. Modelling the thermochemical behaviour of those reactions is complex, as it involves multi-component and multi-phase systems. For this purpose, thermodynamic computing systems such as FactSage™ (Bale et al, 2016), which combine Gibbs energy minimisation routines with large databases of optimised thermodynamic data of solutions and compounds, have been used within the SMS group GmbH. Recently, the successful integration of those thermodynamic computing systems into the digital platforms of SMS has been achieved through ChemApp, which made running complex thermochemical calculations in Python-integrated development environments possible. ChemApp is a programmer’s package for thermochemistry and incorporates the Gibbs energy minimiser of FactSage™ as reported by Petersen and Hack (2007) as well as by Zietsman and Petersen (2018). The digital platforms link the fundamental and the industrial aspects together and can be applied as a process advisor, or for the evaluation of the environmental footprint and the economic implications of different process routes, as discussed by Reuter (2023). Two examples illustrating the progress of the developments in this regard will be introduced: 1. The Tilting Refining Furnace (TRF) for copper scrap recycling and refining to anode copper (the BlueControlApp). 2. Dephosphorisation control for the oxygen steelmaking process (Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF)).

"Evolution Mining is the sole owner of the Mt Rawdon open cut operation, located 75 km south-west of Bundaberg in Queensland, Australia (Figure 1). It is a massive, volcanically hosted, low-grade gold deposit that exhibits excellent characteristics conducive to low cost mining and treatment.In 2014, Mt Rawdon began investigating initiatives to deliver higher mill throughputs without any significant capital expenditure or modifications to the existing processing plant. Various studies have shown throughput increases are possible by applying more blast energy, essentially by reducing feed size through blasting and leaving less work for the comminution circuits (Brent et al, 2013; Ziemski, 2011; Workman and Eloranta, 2003).Given that 53 per cent of energy used on a mine site is consumed by the comminution circuit, with only two per cent being consumed by drill and blast (Smith, 2013), it makes logical sense for a mining operation to align their drill and blast with their processing plant. The term commonly used when exploring this relationship is a ‘Mine to Mill’ program.Over nearly 12 months, various blasting options and Mine to Mill methodologies were tested at Mt Rawdon. Throughout the journey, it was abundantly clear that the Mine to Mill initiative is not as simple as making one technical or physical change and expecting an improvement. Rather, true sustainable improvements demand a paradigm shift across both the mining and processing cultures, where all departments are aligned and working towards the one outcome. This true overarching Mine to Mill mentality, enabled by Vistis™ 250 high energy bulk explosive, ultimately led to a sustained increase in throughput and profitability of the Mt Rawdon operation.Citation:Wallace, G and Morton, D, 2016. The Ambuklao and Binga Rehabilitation Project is a 175 MW hydro power project currently under construction across dual sites in the north region of Luzon Island, Philippines. When it was built in 1956, the Ambuklao Dam harnessed the second largest hydro-electric reservoir in Asia. However, due to landslide erosion and prolonged silt infiltration caused by an earthquake in 1990, the power plant has been rendered inoperable since 1999.To bring the power generating facility back to life, the project scope entails the rehabilitation and construction of civil structures, shafts and tunnels. A major component of these works is the decommissioning of a section of the seven metre diameter headrace tunnel by installing a concrete plug. The headrace tunnel is part of a closed waterway system that connects the dam via a shaft, exhibiting a hydrostatic pressure of 13 bar (1300 kPa) at the location of the new tunnel plug. In addition, the power station ball valves have seized ajar and the damaged intake riser is unsafe toaccess thereby requiring the plugging operation to be carried out under live flowing conditions.Working under hydrostatic pressure and live conditions, the headrace plug will be an underwater tremie pour operation that includes drilling and concrete injection through blow out preventer caissons installed in the floor of an underground chamber above the tunnel. The purpose of this paper is to describe the key engineering and planning components involved in this operation including pre- and post-grouting, chamber crane, sonar, local water compensation, jet flushing, drilling, caisson installation, and concrete design, production, delivery and placement. The success of this task rests on the strategic preparation and operational management of risk and safety in a challenging rural environment.

Development of a global failure criterion for rocks has been a desired goal in rock mechanics. Due to variations in factors affecting rock specifications and their mechanical properties, proposing a single failure criterion suitable for all rock types has proven to be unachievable. The theoretical failure criteria do not fit the real data correctly. Amongst empirical criteria, the Bieniawski criterion has demonstrated an acceptable agreement with laboratory generated data. It has been experienced that the ability to estimate rock strength via the modified form of this criterion is significantly improved. Based on the modified Bieniawski criterion and using VB.net, an associated Microsoft Windows program named 'RAMOCE' has been developed. The inputs of RAMOCE can be triaxial compressive strength data, Bieniawski parameters of a specific rock or the type of given rock. Based on input data, potential outputs of the program are Bieniawski's rock parameters, sensitivity analysis of the effective parameters, rock failure prediction and defining the type of given rock.

The La Colorada underground mine in Zacatecas, Mexico is a mechanised cut-and-fill silver mine with a capacity of 1250 t/d. The project focused on training the mine’s experienced operators for a fleet of underground trucks, through the use of a training simulator. The project was run by the simulator vendor, in collaboration with the mine’s maintenance, safety and production management.A training program was created targeting maintenance reduction, productivity improvement and increased utilisation and availability. Operators were first acclimatised to the simulated environment, had their current performance baselined, then received targeted coaching, with the process repeated to reinforce learnings. Concurrently, production, maintenance, and safety data was being measured in the real world to measure skills transfer. Due to limited telemetry available from the equipment, many of the data points for the project were sourced from maintenance logs, and accounting data.Equipment failure data measured from unscheduled maintenance records showed an overall 6.5 per cent decrease in unscheduled maintenance following the implementation of the training program. This rate of reduction correlated with the significant decrease in equipment abuse behaviours measured within the simulator during this period. Additionally, overall maintenance activities showed a significant decrease, confirming that reductions in unscheduled maintenance were not achieved through increases in scheduled maintenance. The reduction in equipment damage also increased availability and utilisation of the truck fleet. This highlights that the maintenance improvements not only reduced maintenance costs, but made the fleet available for more production. Moreover, the variability of the operator performance was decreased by 86 per cent, and the difference between their best operator and the worst is less than the baseline; this showed a gap where machine abuse, productivity and cost are impacted directly.This project illustrated that even small-scale mining operations with an experienced operator workforce can achieve positive return on investment (ROI) from simulation-based training. The consideration of complex supply chains often highlights multiple system bottlenecks that are localised and dynamic – they shift depending on what variability last influenced the system. Using the understanding of a dynamic system model, synergies between items that tackle localised bottlenecks can be understood to generate a suite of solutions. These can be simple solutions, such as a couple of new conveyors placed in series, or more complex ones, including buffer dynamics (capacity, location, behaviour, etc).Each solution in the suite will have an associated uplift in system performance and an associated cost of implementation. Dynamic simulations can address each situation in turn and estimate the projected improvement it would offer. However, these solutions will have different benefits when implemented together, and each solution will give different uplift depending on what other solutions have already been assumed. If the number of solutions is numerous, traditional dynamic simulation analysis becomes the bottleneck, limiting options analysis to the processing power available.This paper will illustrate the use of a new technique applied as part of a capital growth optimisation project with a major iron ore producer. Metamodelling is the creation of a model of a model; in this case study, the focus is on developing a response surface representing the suite of solutions. This can be achieved through a combination of dynamic modelling and an appropriate mathematical process called design of experiments. The result is an approximation surface of the outcomes of the dynamic model, encapsulating interactions between key elements of the value chain.This modelling approach provides a number of advantages compared to traditional dynamic modelling approaches, including but not limited to:early and rapid evaluation of a large range of potential solutionsaccommodation of multiple initial states of the value chainoptimisation of the overall suite of upgrades (down to route-level upgrades) based on business objectiveseasy re-evaluation of outcomes when key inputs such as costs change.CITATION:Kleinschmidt, T, Foo, J, Reynolds, B and Kennewell, K, 2015. The optimum mining of an orebody in an underground mining operation is fundamental to the mine’s ability to operate both sustainably and efficiently. The effective mining of an open stope or a cave is largely reliant on the recovery of the initial void created by conventional drilling and blasting. These initial voids are known by various names such as a Longhole Rise, Slot or Winze and can be mined either as a downhole or as an uphole. Regardless of the underground mining method, the process of the design and implementation of this initial void is largely uniform across many operations with various patterns of slot or winze designs used across these different operations. Diligent design, implementation and review strategies in drilling and blasting of these will facilitate cost-effective mining with minimal disruption to mine schedules and production targets. When an operation struggles in opening the initial void in underground mine blasting, it has a negative impact on productivity, mineral recovery, and the overall economics of mining. Near field blast vibration monitoring is a vital tool to use in analysing slot blasts and will provide additional feedback into the reconciliation part of the drill and blast process. It is one that is often overlooked in the mining industry in many operations due to many factors such as lack of skilled personnel, or a lack of required resources. The data obtained from near field blast vibration monitoring can be used to provide additional feedback into blast reviews and help in any drill and blast optimisation projects. This paper highlights key aspects of underground drill and blast reviews and the use of near field blast vibration monitoring for post blast analysis and shares learnings from various projects that the authors have been involved in within Australia and abroad.

Factual data about the sedimentation in the Newcastle Coal. Measures are presented. Data concerning the total coal measure sequence (isopachs, sand /shale ratio and total coal thickness variation), data about three coal seams (Borehole, Dudley and Victoria Tunnel) and data about interseam con- glomerate units are discussed. From this data conclusions are drawn about the coal measure environment. The western edge of the coal basin, the Lochinvar Dome, although a high feature was apparently stable during coal measure time. Despite its height it apparently supplied little sediment to the basin. The northern and north-eastern edge, which was unstable, suppl- ied most of the coarse detritus including the conglomerates to the basin. The conglomerates show patterns of fluvial origin but after a period of "normal" variations in pattern they become restricted to two parallel zones evidently tectonically controlled. Deposition of conglomerates is episodic and separated by periods of coal formation when deformation was apparently slight. Formation of each of the three seams considered followed a rather similar pattern - each shows development of thick coal around the basin edge and poor thin coal in the "axial" region of the present synclinal structure. Evidence of in-situ formation of some areas of the seams is discussed and periodic deformation of the basin during coal measure time is postulated.

Resource estimates are the corner stone of technical and investment decision-making. Prior to mining, resource estimation uncertainty has the greatest potential to lead to poor investment decisions, despite a significant component of resource estimation uncertainty being unknowable at this critical stage in the mining cycle. This presents a conundrum to the resource geologist in terms of risk evaluation and resource classification. Ahead of mining, there is normally considerable focus on drill hole spacing analysis to determine the ‘optimal’ drill hole spacing, taking grade and geological continuity into account; cost-benefit analyses balance improved resource definition against cost; the law of diminishing returns and the exponential cost increases acting together as spacing is reduced. Typically, a lower limit to the drill hole spacing is identified. After completing the resource drilling to an agreed spacing, resource estimation is then undertaken. At this point it is common to attempt to bracket the resource estimation uncertainty. In many cases conditional simulation is used, based on a modelled, but largely assumed, variogram model. It is also assumed that the histogram of the available drill hole sample data is representative of the in-ground mineralisation. The purpose of this paper is not to diminish the importance of drill hole spacing and simulation studies, but rather to illuminate an important aspect of estimation uncertainty that, although previously recognised, is typically overlooked – the question of how representative the available data set is in characterising the true (but unknown) distribution of mineralisation. To do this, we lift the lid on one of OceanaGold’s former operations, the mined-out Globe Progress Mine, by resurrecting a high quality, close-spaced, reverse circulation (RC) grade control data set. The Globe Progress Mine is within the West Coast Region of New Zealand, it was closed and transitioned to rehabilitation in 2016 and is now known as the Reefton Restoration Project. The exhaustive Globe Progress grade control data was used to repeatedly ‘redrill’ the deposit by extracting 35 m × 35 m spaced subsets from the original 5 m × 5 m spaced grade control data. Utilising closely spaced grade control data removed the need for assumptions regarding short range continuity, which are necessary with forward-looking analyses that are based upon broader spaced resource drilling. The extraction process used a nearest neighbourhood algorithm, repeatedly moving the origin in 5 mE, or 5 mN increments. Individual resource estimates were then completed for each of the extracted drill hole data sets (49 in total) as well as a grade control estimate based upon the exhaustive data set. Whilst the data unpinning each of the 49 estimates changed, the geological assumptions, variography, and modelling parameters remained constant. This approach was taken to isolate the impact of changing the input data. The 49 estimates were then compared against each other and the grade control estimate. The mean of all 49 sensitivity estimates was close to that of the grade control estimate in terms of contained gold, tonnes and grade. Whilst it is acknowledged that the grade control estimate itself is subject to some degree of estimation uncertainty, the close match between the average of the 49 estimates and the grade control estimate suggests that the resource estimation methodology is reasonable and appropriate. Whilst this comparison is important, the focus of this study is on the component of estimation uncertainty related to the underlying data, and this is reflected in the spread across the estimates. The spread across the 49 global estimates (highest to lowest) for this particular Mineral Resource Estimation Conference 2023 | Perth, Australia | 24–25 May 2023 142 case study was found to be significant (approximately 20 per cent in grade and metal) and that is attributable solely to the underlying data. This exercise quantifies a component of the estimation uncertainty that is inherent to all drill hole data and is distinct from the uncertainties associated with modelling methodology choices, sample and subsample quality and drill hole spacing-related interpolation uncertainty. Importantly, this uncertainty is unknowable prior to mining; we can only directly compare the resource drill hole data against grade control data after mining has taken place. For the case study, approximately 65 per cent of the estimates fell within 5 per cent of the grade control estimate for contained-gold, suggesting that for many projects the histogram of drill hole data is unlikely to differ noticeably from that of the in-ground resource. However, about 15 per cent of the estimates in this study differed by more than 7.5 per cent, suggesting that a not-insignificant proportion of estimates will be materially compromised. Whether or not the available drill hole data is representative comes down to the ‘luck of the draw’ and cannot be known at the time of resource estimation. Given the challenge of attempting to evaluate forward-looking estimation uncertainty, a component of which that can only be quantified retrospectively, what should we do as resource geologists? What are the implications for risk evaluation, resource classification and reconciliation? Furthermore, without rigorous post-mining data checks, resource geologists may conflate suboptimal modelling with the shortcomings of the underlying data. An example of this problem is discussed in the following section.

The drive to maximise performance, reduce maintenance times, improve safety of operation and maintenance on mining equipment while keeping both operational and capital costs down has provided good nourishment to the creative thinking of designers of skip loading facilities for hoisting systems. Early systems were as simple as manual loading which evolved into a surge bin feeding a skip through a chute finally maturing into a measuring flask discharging into a chute to feed the skip and more recently high capacity skip feed conveyors. This paper will compare the concepts of the skip loading flask and the skip loading conveyor systems over a range of winding distances and hoisted tonnages. The comparison will draw on actual installations and review operational, maintenance and safety. An order of magnitude capital cost estimate will be used to complete the financial comparison. This will enable the reader to understand the concepts and costs and assist in selecting the appropriate skip loading system.

The Cooljarloo North Mine has been shaped not only by operational and processing challenges, but by climatic and economic factors. This paper outlines some of these challenges and discusses how the operating strategy has been altered over time to mitigate the impacts.Since commissioning the wet concentrator in 1999, there have been many typical operational challenges to maximising valuable heavy mineral (VHM) recovery. These include: varying in pit feed grades, different slimes types and volumes, sizing extremes between VHM and trash minerals and decreased equipment reliability handling rocky ore. These issues were successfully mitigated by: in pit extraction strategies, upgrade of the de-sliming circuit, thickener modifications and flocculent changes, installing upgraded and additional spiral capacity, and various Feed Preparation Plant screening initiatives. Combined with the ingenuity, persistence and patience of the operating team, VHM recovery >95 per cent has been achieved.However, typical processing challenges have not been the only hurdles. Reduced rainfall and water availability has necessitated the strategic co-disposal of tailings and slime to increase the speed of water recovery: groundwater abstraction and water storage strategies have also been altered. With an observed reduction in the speed and magnitude of groundwater recharge, overburden backfill scheduling has become a priority mine planning function.Combined with the above challenges, the prevailing foreign exchange rate and mineral product prices have impacted profitability. At the height of the Global Financial Crisis in 2009, major changes to the operating strategy were made to maintain a viable dry mining operation in 2010. Working with the mining contractor the existing scraper and semi-fixed Feed Preparation Plant set up was replaced with a movable in pit dozer trap facility. The end result of changes to the mining method and primary screening was a ten per cent reduction in unit costs. This article will elaborate on some of the above mentioned challenges and successes achieved over the past ten years of operating the Cooljarloo North Mine.

Production from the narrow, high grade silver-lead-zinc orebodies below 15 level commenced in mid 1985.Geological, mining research and recent mining experience determined that a mechanised drill, fire and muck cycle would be the most suitable method.Ground conditions are predicted to be worse than in other cut and fill (MICAF) areas at Isa Mine, owing to the increased depth, more variable dip of the orebodies and the increased effect of major geological structures.Mechanised ground support and tight filling techniques feature in controlling these expected adverse ground conditions.

A comprehensive Australia-wide survey of comminution energy consumption at copper and gold mines was presented by the authors at the 11th AusIMM Mill Operators’ Conference 2012. The database has been extended to include major overseas mines and used to benchmark comminution energy consumption across the industry. The mines included in this study now represent 15 and 24 per cent of the total global gold and copper production respectively, and almost all Australian production. The comminution energy intensity per unit of saleable metal has been presented in a graphical form similar to a cost curve used in economics. The graphical method has been developed to assess the competitive advantage that can be achieved by reducing comminution energy intensity.This benchmarking tool has been applied to three published case studies to assess its applicability. The first case study indicated that a large reduction in size-specific energy (kWh/t -75 µm) was achievable by converting standard semi-autogenous and ball mill circuits to include high pressure grinding roll and stirred mills. The second case study investigated the metal-specific energy reduction historically achieved by Bougainville with the addition of a preconcentration screening plant. The final case study was conducted by Barrick Gold Corporation and involved incremental efficiency upgrades at three of its gold mines: Cortez, Cowal and Mara North. The application of the benchmarking tool to each of these case studies successfully demonstrated the scale and competitive advantage that was achieved by reducing energy intensity.CITATION:Ballantyne, G R and Powell, M S, 2014. In the steelmaking process, mold fluxes are essential for ensuring thermal insulation, refining, and the efficiency of continuous casting. Real-time understanding of the in-service composition of slags and fluxes are crucial for optimising the steel production process and improving the quality of the final product. An in situ fibre-optic Raman probe that enables the study of the structure, composition, and viscosity of molten slags and fluxes at steelmaking temperatures has been developed and demonstrated both in the lab and in foundry scale experiments. The focus of this study is on the structural, compositional, and property analysis of molten fluxes in a laboratory setting, with the aim of applying this technology for in situ monitoring during industrial production. Raman spectra were successfully collected at various temperatures from 1000°C to 1400°C in real-time and analysed using a deconvolution algorithm to isolate and quantify peaks in the spectra associated with the specific structures of molecular components in molten and solidifying flux. The research successfully combines in situ Raman spectroscopy with high-temperature viscosity data, specifically targeting CaO-CaF-SiO2-Al2O3 based mould flux systems. Specified ratios of the deconvoluted Raman peaks, such as Al-O-Al/Si-O-Si ratio, shows good correlation with the flux chemistry, while the Q3/Q0 peak ratio shows good correlation with viscosity. A ruggedised Raman probe system was also developed and demonstrated in an 80 kg induction furnace. Ultimately, the goal of this work is to demonstrate in situ slag and mould flux analysis in industrial processes, such as in the continuous caster or electric arc furnace (EAF).

The Readymix Group have a Quarry Improvement Program - 'Building in Quality (BIQ) which has many parallels to the ICI Explosives' total quality management - 'Quality Improvement Program' (QIP). Both companies have for some time recognised that the 'do it right first time' principle means less wasted effort and materials, that efficiency breeds profitability and so actively promote the quality culture. To install the principles and generate the culture requires considerable commitment and effort from the top down and invariably spreads to the suppliers and sub-contractors. Understanding the component processes involved with the quarry operation, analysis of those processes and gaining a breakdown of the cost of non conformance then allows the astute quarry operator to make the necessary changes to improve the process to realise profits. This paper outlines the steps in such a process and the profitable outcomes of the commitment to continuous improvement at the Nickol Bay Quarry.

An extensive trial of laser-based survey and monitoring systems at Hillgrove Resources Kanmantoo Copper Mine in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, has proved the capabilities of the system in monitoring rock movements on open pit walls. Initially, the trial involved deploying a Maptek I-Site 8820 laser scanner and the proof-of-concept Maptek Sentry software in the Nugent Pit to monitor ductile rock movements located up to 260 m away. The system was proven to be capable of monitoring various rock movements from 1.5 tonne rockfalls up to a 40 m high toppling wall failure. Data collected from smaller rockfalls was used to help build a database for Hillgrove’s rockfall management program. As part of the trial, the laser scanner was deployed to monitor a ramp movement event, as well as the toppling failure, adjacent to an IBIS slope stability radar. Both devices monitored the slump and the slowly developing toppling movements, with similar results. Although the radar was used as the successful ‘critical alarm’ device for the toppling failure, post-failure analysis showed the laser-based system to be capable of performing a similar role in the ductile rock regime; albeit over much shorter distances than the radar capability. A second laser scanner was deployed to monitor Kanmantoo’s Emily Pit in early December 2014, where it successfully provided critical alarm warnings for a block topple event. Sentry software, which takes advantage of Maptek I-Site 3D spatial imaging technology, was first released in November 2014 to meet industry demand for a cost effective, flexible system to detect movement. Sentry has now been re-launched as a fully transportable monitoring system. Deployed in a custom trailer, the system offers a power and communications module, cellular and Wi-Fi networking and a stable bollard for the I-Site laser scanner and Sentry software. This paper will present rock wall movement data from the Sentry trial and a subsequent two years of monitoring of the open pit walls at the Kanmantoo Copper Mine, at distances out to 750m. In addition, examples of remote geological mapping and small rockfall detection, using the laser scans, will be described. The Sentry system has proven to be beneficial for the continual improvement of slope monitoring and risk management at hard rock mines. The revival of the mining industry at Captain's Flat after a long period of years of inactivity has attracted attention to the importance of the ore-deposits of that field as potential sources of supply of lead and zinc. Mindful of the necessity for taking stock of the State's mineral resources, the Department of Mines of New South Wales as part of its programme of geological investigation, carried out a survey of the oredeposits and associated country rocks during 1938 and 1940.Surface geology was mapped in detail and all available exposures were examined and logged. Unfortunately, and this condition militates against the formulation of conclusions because of insufficiem.t data, some of the older workings, notably in Keating's Section, were inaccessible and the logging of levels and stopes is by no means as complete as could be desired. However, with the progress of development and exploration, further information of geological value will come to hand for incorporation in supplementary reports. It may be expected that, under such circumstances, modification of certain statements herein expressed may be necessary but it is not anticipated that any vital alteration will be occasioned.Within the State of, New South Wales, Captain's Flat ranks second to Broken Hill as a pqtem.tial producer of lead and zinc. In addition, large quantities of iron pyrites are available for the manufacture of sulphuric acid which finds application in the superphosphate industry.The mines are now controlled by an operating company known as Lake George Mines, Ltd., incorporated in New South Wales, the parent organisation being the Lake George Mining Gorporation Ltd., registered in London.Over £600,000 has been spent by the Company in exploration, mine development, surface plant, housing and water 'conservation, while the State' Government constructed a branch railway from Bungendore at a cost of £200,000. The various activities consequent upon these development and construction programmes and the prospect of employment in the industry has led to a rapid increase in the population of the township.The State, generally, has benefited to the extent of a substantial contribution to the relief of the unemployment problem, and it is hoped that reasonable permanency will be assured to some hundreds of workers for many years.
