AT THE TURN of the century the nonferrous alloy industry was awakening to the value of scientific metallurgy, and brass foundries and rolling mills began to establish their own research laboratories for scientific research and control. As the industry grew and its scope broadened it became apparent that an organization was needed that would stand in the same relation to the nonferrous industry as the American Foundrymen's Association did to the iron foundry business. The brass founders' group of the foundrymen's association discussed the matter and it was finally decided to appoint a com- mittee to draw up a constitution for a new organization to be known as the American Brass Founders' Association. Charles J. Caley was chairman and Dr. Richard Moldenke secretary of this committee. The object of the organization as defined by the constitution was the study of the technological development of alloying and founding non- ferrous metals, and furthering the advance of nonferrous metallurgy and the standardization of materials and operations in cooperation with the Bureau of Standards and engineering societies.

WALTER DOUGLAS succeeded his father, Dr. James Douglas, as president of Phelps Dodge in 1916. Before assuming office, the new president had been assayer at Bisbee, superintendent of the Copper Queen, general manager of all the Phelps Dodge mining interests, and altogether had spent a full quarter of a century in various phases of the company's business. Energetic and imaginative, experienced and courageous, he had need of all these qualities before he surrendered the direction of affairs into younger hands, fourteen years later. For the period of his administration was one of sudden ebb apd flow, flush production, drastic curtailment, quick recovery, and near-disaster. In 1917, soon after Walter Douglas became president, Phelps, Dodge & Co., Inc., which had been formed in 1908 as a holding company, went through an internal reorganization for the purpose of simplifying the structure and changing it from a holding company to an operating company. THE orientation relationships resulting from allotropic transforma-tions and the formation of segregate structures in metals and alloys have been the subject of the eight earlier papers in this series1. A brief summary of orientation studies has also been given by Sachs2. A survey of these papers discloses that the factors that determine the orientation relationship of a precipitated phase to its parent solid solution, as Well as the outward form and appearance of the new phase, are not completely understood. It is now evident that crystallographically analogous systems, as a rule, exhibit the same type of Widmanstätten figure and orientation relations, so that useful information is not to be expected from examination of a new alloy involving lattice combinations of which the orientation relationships are already known. Therefore, the determina-tion of the relations existing between lattice types that have not already been studied seems to be the most promising mode of attack upon the problem; both of the systems reported in this paper represent new com-binations of lattice types.

At high temperatues and reduced oxygen pressuves, molybdenum silicicles oxidize to form SiO(g) vathev than a passivating SiO2 film. This is a sevious problem for low-pressure applications of sili-cide-coated rejvactory tnetals. As oxiclalion pvoceeds, the higher oxidntion potential of silicon initially suppresses oxidation of molybdenum and silicon is depleted near the surface. Eventually, silicon depletion causes secondary passivation (SiO2) mid an active to passiue transition in oxidntion behavior at moderately low pressures. At very low pressures, silicon depletion continues until steady-state oxidation of both silicon and rnolyhdenum can proceed at rates propovtional to their initial stoicliiorrzetvies. Ohsel-vations of 'oxidatiou-rate belzcriliov at temperatures from 1101° to 1700°C and oxygen pressures from 10-7 to 1 at in were made using thermogravimetn'c, X-ray diffraction, and elect?*on-rtric?ro/,vobe techniqrres. The experimental results are in good agreement with calculated lirnits for the various types of behavior that were based on tlievtnochernicnl atzd dffusion rate data for the Mo-Si system. A protective oxide film normally forms during the oxidation of elemental silicon. However, at elevated temperatures and reduced pressures this film is not present and oxidation is rapid. wagnerl has shown that this behavior occurs because SiO(g) is more stable than SiO2. The behavior of the silicides at high temperatures is similar but more complicated. Molybdenum and several silicide compounds are involved and the chemical activity of silicon, or the equivalent silicon vapor pressure, can vary considerably in these phases. Also, diffusion in the silicides resulting from reactions in which a higher silicide is reduced to a lower silicide, or molybdenum containing dissolved silicon, must be considered. EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL METHODS Isothermal oxidation experiments were conducted using hot-pressed MoSi2 and Mo5Si3 wafers. Each experiment was conducted at a fixed oxygen pressure by controlling the flow of oxygen in and out of the furnace chamber. Most of the experiments were conducted in a molybdenum-wound tube furnace. Special construction features, including use of a high-purity dense A12O3 refractory tube, permitted operation in high vacuum to 1500°C. Higher temperatures could be obtained at higher working pressures and with a sacrifice of tube lifetime. Temperature was measured with three Pt 6 pct Rh/Pt 30 pct Rh thermocouples and controlled with a proportional controller. Weight changes were monitored with a quartz spring balance. The few experiments, at higher temperatures and low pressures, were conducted in a cold wall vacuum chamber using induction heating with direct susceptance of the sample. Because of the variable levitation effect of the induction coil on the sample, weight changes could not be monitored continuously in these experiments. All samples representing both experimental methods were weighed before and after oxidiation and examined with a microscope and analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The analytical treatment assumes equilibrium at interfaces and uses existing thermodynamic data. For convenience, equilibria are expressed as chemical potentials or as vapor pressures of the gases involved. The resulting differences in equilibrium vapor pressure between adjacent interfaces and between the surface and external atmosphere drive diffusion processes in the solid and gas boundary film, respectively. These diffusion processes govern the rate of oxidation. A bibliography of the sources of thermochemical data for the reactions pertinent to the Mo-Si-O system is given in Table I. Reactions are listed with the sources of free-energy data referenced. Since all of these reactions involve one or more gas species, usually oxygen, a plot of the product-gas chemical potential, -RT In Pg, vs absolute temperature for each reaction is given in Fig. 1. These curves can be used to determine equilibrium vapor pressures or to compare the stability of different compounds in the various gases: O2, Si, SiO, and Moo3,. The data of Table I and Fig. 1 were used to determine the analytical results presented in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The weight changes for three MoSi, samples oxidized at 1500°C are plotted against time in Fig. 2. The treatments were identical except for the indicated variance of oxygen pressure and each curve represents one of three characteristic types of behavior that were observed. In making heating gas with anthracite coal for roasting ore during the past few years, I have tried many forms of gas generators. So far, the most successful and satisfactory one has been what we call a fluxing producer, which is simply a small cupola or blast furnace, in which we charge with the coal, say, 30 or 40 per cent. of basic blast-furnace cinder, to unite, when melted, with the ash or earthy matter in the coal, and carry it off as cinder. The producer we have in use at Chester, N. J., has more of the lines of a blast furnace than a cupola, the hearth being 24 inches diameter and 24 inches high. It then enlarges on an angle of about 25 degrees from a perpendicular to 4 feet, and then is drawn into 3 feet on top ; total height, 12 feet. We use one water coil-tuyere 12 inches above the bottom, and blow through a 1 1/2 - inch nozzle. The depth of coal above the tuyere averages about 6 feet. The producer-is blown with

The kinetics of copper cementation on rotating disks of body and tear-top beverage can aluminum alloys were studied as a function of temperature and copper ion concentration. Both alloys followed the two-step kinetic regions, an initially slow rate followed by an enhanced rate. Experimental activation energy determinations (9.04 to 19.62 kJ/mol) indicated that ionic diffusion controlled the reaction mechanism between 20° and 60°C. At low temperatures (< 20°C), the system appeared to be controlled by the presence of an aluminum oxide surface film. The results of this study showed that cementation kinetics for the beverage can aluminum alloys are similar to those for pure aluminum. It was also found that the chemical removal of the oxide layer is less important for the alloys than /or the pure aluminum system. The characteristics of the resultant copper deposits were studied under a scanning electron microscope, and the reaction kinetics seemed to depend strongly on the nature and morphology of the deposits. In addition, maximum rates occurred when the deposit structures were fine feathery dendrites.

ENACTMENT&apos; of Public Law 290 by the 78th Congress authorized the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, to conduct an experimental program to develop the technology for obtaining oil from oil shale. In adopting and later extending this legislation, the Congress recognized the impending necessity of supplementing ground petroleum reserves with synthetic fuels. Under the provisions of this legislation, the Bureau of Mines, among other things, was charged with the responsibility of developing mining techniques, methods, and equipment for mining the oil shales of the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The oil shales of western Colorado are apparently richer, more accessible, and more amenable to exploitation than elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain region. The site chosen for the Bureau&apos;s Experimental mine is about 10 miles west of Rifle in northwestern Colorado. It is within a 1000-sq-mile area from which, it has been estimated, 300 billion barrels of shale oil could be produced from a 500-ft measure near the top of the formation. One hundred billion barrels of this amount could be produced from the Mahogany ledge, a 60 to 100-ft section near the bottom of the 500-ft measure. This ledge is considered to have economic importance at present. The Green River formation was laid down as sediment in the bottom of vast, shallow inland lakes during Eocene time. The deposit is flat-lying, and there are no faults, fissures, or local rolls. Oil shale is actually a strong, tough magnesium marlstone, which will stand unsupported over relatively wide spans. These and other natural physical characteristics favor mechanized, low-cost mining, which is essential for establishment of an oil-shale industry. It was realized from the outset that an extensive research program would be necessary to develop mining methods, equipment, and techniques for a mechanized, low-cost operation. The program was designed to include research. into all the productive phases of mining, such as drilling, blasting, loading, transportation, and maintenance of the mine structure. The methods, equipment, and techniques developed as a result of this research have established a production of 116 tons per man-shift total labor at a direct cost of $0,292 per ton. Another important phase of the research program that has received little publicity because of its theoretical nature is study of the roofstone behavior and determination of mine structure stresses. This paper purposes to discuss this phase of the research program. Preliminary studies of the physical properties of the Green River oil-shale formation were made in the Barodyramics Laboratory at Columbia University during the latter part of 1945 and the early part of 1946.* The purpose of these studies was to determine the maximum size of unsupported underground openings that would be commensurate with safety and still permit the use of large, efficient mining equipment. Also to be determined were the pillar support to extraction ratio and the shape, size, and spacing of supporting pillars. Selected samples of possible roofstones near the top of the Mahogany ledge, as well as representative samples of different rock types found within the ledge, were obtained from the Bureau&apos;s oil-shale mine for these studies. The maximum safe unsupported roof span calculated from this work was 200 ft. Using a safety factor of four, it was theoretically determined that openings 60 ft wide could be advanced under a roofstone at the top of the Mahogany ledge. To support the overburden, 60-ft-sq pillars would be left in a checkerboard pattern. From visual observations made of core samples through the selected roofstone at the oil-shale mine, it was determined that the roofstone was actually a plate 6 to 8 ft thick. Because the calculations were theoretical and allowance had to be made for unknown cracks and fractures in the formation, openings 50 ft wide and pillars 60 ft sq were originally contemplated in the Bureau&apos;s Experimental mine. This would be the minimum allowable width that would permit use of large underground mining equipment. For lower mining costs and greater efficiency larger openings were desirable. Different but analogous approaches were made to the problem at the Bureau of Mines Applied Physics

Upon the recommendation of its Technical Committee, The Com-pressed Air Society has adopted the following definitions of, certain terms. Displacement.-The displacement of an air compressor is the volume displaced by the net area of the compressor piston. Capacity.-The capacity should be expressed in cubic feet per minute, and is the actual amount of air compressed and delivered, expressed in terms of free air at intake temperature and at the pressure of dry air at the suction. Volumetric Efficiency.-Volumetric efficiency is the ratio of the capacity to the displacement of the compressor, all as defined above. Compression Efficiency.-Compression efficiency is the ratio of the work required to compress isothermally all the air delivered by an air compressor to the work actually clone within the compressor cylinder, as shown by indicator cards, and may he expressed is the product of the volumetric efficiency (the intake pressure and the hyperbolic logarithm of the ratio of compression), all divided by the indicated mean effective pressure within the air cylinder or cylinders.

W. M. Williams (McGill University)-The authors are to be congratulated on completing this detailed investigation of recrystallization behavior. The present writer has recently completed some research at the University of Toronto on the recrystallization and grain growth behavior of a number of "pure" irons, and he would like to take issue with the authors&apos; contention that recrystallization cannot be followed by means of hardness measurements. Two series of specimens of Ferrovac E, a com- mercially available iron, were annealed to complete recrystallization at 525" and 620" C, measurements being made both of Rockwell hardness and of volume percent recrystallized as a function of annealing time. Good correlation was found between these two quantities and, following the earlier practice of Cook and Richards for copper, hardness measurements were used in an extensive investigation of recrystallization. No anomalous behavior was observed as a result of this practice. Specimens which showed complete softening always showed, (metallographically and by X-rays), completely re-crystallized structures. These observations do not, of course, detract in the least from the results of the work under discus-

CHILEAN mining in the public mind is rightly associated with copper. Chuquicamata with its great hill of copper-bearing granodiorite as well as Sewell and Potrerillos with mineralized volcanic necks together can supply a good proportion of the world&apos;s normal necessities of that metal. Chile is an extremely long and narrow country, averaging only 109 miles wide. Its eastern frontier is the Andes and it is on the western slopes of these mountains that the great copper deposits have been discovered. West of the Andes a great longitudinal depres sion has permitted accumulation of nitrates and other soluble salts in the arid north; in the north center it is hidden by a series of cross ranges, but in the center a moderate rainfall makes it the country&apos;s most important agricultural region. In the south this depression is drowned and gives rise to a series of straits and fiords. This enormous cleft in the earth&apos;s crust is separated from the sea by a coast range of moderate elevation which in the south is represented by a series of islands and mushroom-shaped peninsulas

The oxidation kinetics of spherical pellets of zinc sulfide made from Santander concentrates were studied using a thermogravimetric technique. The experiments covered a temperature range-. of 740" to 102O°C, 0-N mixtures varying from 20 to LOO pct O2, and pellet diameters between 0.4 and 1.6 cm. Mathematical models were formulated to Predict the reaction rate on the assumption that a single transport or interface reaction step was rate -controlling. Analysis of the data indicated that the process of oxidation was predominantly controlled by transport through the zinc oxide reaction-Product layer. ROASTING processes, which are reactions between solids and gases, are very important because they are employed in the production of a number of basic metals. These processes are highly complicated, and one needs to consider the transport phenomena of heat and mass between the solids and gases in addition to the kinetics of various chemical reactions involved. Because of such complications there is a lack of knowledge concerning the rate-limiting factors, which may strongly depend on temperature, particle size, gas composition, and solid structure. The oxidation of zinc sulfide, which is of commercial importance in zinc production, falls into this class of reactions. The major goal of this work was to elucidate the roles played by different process variables, such as reaction temperature, gas composition, pellet size, and pellet porosity, on the kinetics of oxidation of single pellets of zinc sulfide. Roasting of zinc sulfide single particles has been a subject of both experimental and theoretical investigations.&apos;-&apos; The reaction is exothermic and may be considered to be irreversible. Such a reaction has been found to proceed in a topochemical manner. In other words, as the reaction proceeds, a progressively thicker outer shell of zinc oxide is formed, while the inner core of unreacted sulfide decreases. It has been found experimentally, both in the present work and in the previous investigations,1-9 that the particle retains its original dimensions and the process requires transport of gaseous oxygen across the porous product layer for continued reaction. The reaction may be represented by ZnS(s) + 3/2 O2(g) = ZnO(s) + SO2(g) [1] The solid product considered here is only zinc oxide, since the diffraction patterns of zinc sulfide pellets oxidized partially at &apos;798" and 960°C showed K. This depicts a partially oxidized sphere of zinc sulfide in a gas stream surrounded by a laminar film of gas. The spherical sample of zinc sulfide of unchanging external radius r0 is suspended in a flowing gas stream of total pressure PT and composition specified by the partial pressures of the individual components. Partial pressures of the gaseous species in the bulk gas phase, at the exterior surface of the pellet, at the ZnS/ZnO interface, and at equilibrium for Reaction [I] are identified by the superscripts b, o, i, and eq, respectively. Transfer of reactant gas (oxygen) from the bulk gas stream across the gas boundary layer to the exterior surface of the pellet and the reverse transfer of the product gas (sulfur dioxide). Step 2. NO ONE could fail to be gratified to receive so profound an approbation in his calling from the members of one&apos;s own profession. To have re-ceived this distinction from men, many of whom have been professional associates and friends over more than a quarter of a century, warrants a pride. and satisfac-tion that could come from no other source. It has often been said that men are really known only to their brothers in labor and in profession. The long friendship I have received from Mr. Saunders and the distinguished service that he has contributed to the mining industry add to my appre-ciation of this event. Mr. Kelley&apos;s remarks bring my mind easily to the beginning of that period of great advance in the engineering, profession of forty years ago. Three great forces contributed to the development of the profession. The first was the era of intense development of minerals, metallurgy; and transportation in our great West. It greatly stimulated invention; it made a demand for training and skill on the part of our engineers. The pressure of national development advanced our American practice beyond the rest of the world. Moreover, the skill of our engineers of that period owes a great debt to American educators. The leaders of our universities were the first of all the educators of the world to recognize that upon them rested the responsibility to provide fundamental train-ing in, the application of science to engineering under the broadening influence and cultivation of university life. They were the first to realize that engineering must be transformed into a profession in the highest sense, not only in the training and character but that the essential quality of a profession is the instillation of ethics. That implies not alone the job but the responsibility of the community for the job. Our uni-versities poured into our development a great stream of men with this background and training. A third distinction that grew in American engineering was the transformation from solely a technical profession to a profession of administrators-the business manager with technical training.

INTRODUCTION The Henderson Mine, located near Empire, Colorado, utilizes a continuous panel caving system to extract ore as one of the world&apos;s major producers of molybdenum. Any mine using a caving-by-gravity technique of mining must rely on closely controlled draw of the caved ore. This control is essential to insure proper caving action, to avoid damaging load concentrations of weight and to minimize the dilution of ore with waste material. Henderson is no exception. Draw control is a major factor in all production planning, from long- range plans to short-range and day-to-day ore scheduling. Draw control is reviewed constantly and administered daily in an effort to optimize production efficiency, ore recovery, and cave management. MINING METHOD The cave at Henderson is massive, moving slowly through large panels that are 244 m (800 ft.) wide by 610 m (2,000 ft.) long. Generally two cave areas are drawn at one time. The areas under active draw vary in size but can be as large as 244 m (800 ft.) by 244 m (800 ft. ) containing 400 draw points. Each draw point contains 45,360 mt (50,000 st) on the average and takes about two and one half years to exhaust. A complete panel is worked for seven to ten years. No pillar exists between panels, but rather a buffer zone of broken ore, or "static face," is left in each panel to be drawn with the adjacent, yet-to-be-caved panel in efforts of minimizing dilution of a working area from an exhausted one. (Figure 1) Production drifts are driven on 24.4 m (80 ft.) centers through the ore body. Between the production drifts are funnel-shaped draw bells on 12.2 m (40 ft.) x 24.4 m (80 ft.) centers to receive ore from the cave. Each bell is accessed by two draw points, one from the production drift on either side, thus forming a 12.2 m (40 ft.) x 12.2 m (40 ft.) draw pattern. Extraction of the ore is by rubber-tired, 3.8 m3 (5 yd3) load-haul-dump equipment. The LHDs then tram the ore a maximum of 49 m (160 ft.) to ore passes. Cave initiation and bell development are done from the undercut drifts which are parallel to and 17 m (55 ft.) directly above the production drifts. Longhole rings are drilled and blasted from the undercut drifts to define the bells and establish the undercut for caving. (Figure 2) DRAW CONTROL Since the cave line at Henderson is constantly advancing, it is necessary to be continually initiating new cave at one end while exhausting it at the opposite end. There must exist, therefore, an angle on the ore-waste contact in the broken rock from initiation to exhaustion. The basic concept of draw control is to keep this angle as smooth and even as possible, particularly at the time of exhaustion. If this is achieved, draw points are exhausted more or less in a line, avoiding pockets of remaining ore surrounded by exhausted areas. These pockets would cause spotty ore extraction at the time of exhaustion, increasing the amount of dilution occurring while introducing the potential for significant weight problems in the production area. To arrive at the desired angle on the ore- waste contact, maximum tonnage percentages are assigned to each row of draw points increasing at 10% or 15% increments (depending on cave size and velocity of draw) working away from the cave line. The available tonnage indicated by these percentages is the maximum allowable tonnage to be extracted from each draw point until the available tonnage percent- age is increased. As the cave moves, these percentages increase for each draw point regularly. However, in general the tonnage drawn from each draw point is kept at about 50% of this allowable maximum in order to maintain adequate available tonnage in the cave to sustain production for seven months if cave initiation were to cease. This available tonnage cushion is a safeguard built into the draw control program at Henderson to accommodate fluctuations in the rate of cave advance. When draw points move past the row of 100% tonnage availability, they are drawn past the desired 50% at the same increments per row until exhausted. (Figure 3) To achieve proper draw control, the number of LHD buckets to be taken from each draw point is assigned daily. The actual buckets taken, which may at times deviate from the

This paper presents the kinetics of leaching pure wulfenite (PbMoO,) with sodium sulfide solutions. Wulfenite dissolves in the presence of sulfide ion according to the following reaction: PbMoO , + S= PbS + MOO;. Synthetic galena is formed and molybdenum is released to solution as molybdate ion. The reaction follows the shrinking core model and the leaching mechanism involves mixed kinetics where both diffusion and chemical reaction are rate controlling. Molybdenum extraction is explained in terms of temperature, particle size, and sodium sulfide concentration.
