THE use of stone as a building material in relatively large blocks is recorded in ancient historical records but only within the past 200 years has broken stone in small sizes begun to have extensive use, principally in highway construction. Tresaguet, in 1764, describing his method for highway construction in France, required the top surface to be built of stone about the size of a walnut, broken by the use of a hammer. It is said that the Romans, in the top layer of their rather massive roads, used large stones bonded together with lime mortar and bedded in small stones mixed with mortar. Much of the early macadam as built by McAdam around 1815 in England was made with hand-sledged broken stone. In 1858, the use of crushed or broken stone received a great impetus from the invention in that year by Eli Whitney Blake of what is said to be the world's first stone crusher. As a consequence of that invention, stone could be crushed to small sizes with considerable ease and, as a natural result, the use of crushed stone in macadam roads and as railroad ballast increased at a great rate. Also, as portland cement came into use, machine-produced crushed stone furnished readily available aggregate. Rapidly, other uses developed, such as for fluxstone in the production of pig iron and for other metallurgical operations and chemical utilizations. These utilizations made for the rapid growth of the crushed-stone industry and this growth is still proceeding with the growth of population and the development of new uses, notably the employment of limestone for the improvement of soils for agricultural purposes. The industries of which the production of crushed stone is a part have a tonnage second only to that of mineral fuel in the mineral industries of this country.

Albert Sauveur writes, on Apr. 16, 1918, while the German offensive was at its height, as follows: "In spite of the German guns and air raids we are all in good health and spirits and shall leave Paris only as a last extremity. Our unlimited confidence in Foch, however, makes us believe that it will not be necessary. I trust that everything is well with you at the Institute." Harold Whittingham entered the active service with the heavy artillery in England at the beginning of the war and has been fighting in France since February, 1915. He now holds the rank of Major. On Dec. 17, 1917, after being wounded, he was taken prisoner by the Germans, and, so far as is known, is still in a prison camp in Germany. Charles W. Wright, who is a Captain in charge of the work of the American Red Cross in Sardinia, Italy, writes that the service there is giving aid to about 80,000 soldiers' families and is upholding the good repute of America in that place. W. S. Holloway in 1914 joined the Sportsmans' Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers as a private, but is now a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, Mining Corps. THE Maintenance Committee of the Coal Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is presenting as a part of this report the second of a series of maintenance cost comparisons. The committee's purpose is to assemble maintenance costs on all equipment connected with mechanical operations at the face of coal mining and to arrange these costs by districts so that comparisons can be made between districts and within districts. The committee, this year, sent 35 questionnaires to representative coal companies who either reported last year or had advised specifically of the inability to report to last year's questionnaire primarily because of limited time. The response to the questionnaire this year was not as good as last year, only 20 of the 35 selected companies returning a completed questionnaire. This year's data has been .compiled and combined with last year's data to present a comparison of the 1945 and 1946 costs of loading machines, shortwall cutting machines, universal cutting machines, service locomotives, shuttle cars, and mine cars. The same tabulation by districts is used as was used for 1945. As was indicated by last year's report there is considerable variation in the maintenance cost of mining machinery in the various coal mining districts and due to this high variability it was not felt practical to attempt to Arrive at weighted averages. Consequently, all average figures used in this report are straight averages. An analysis was made of companies reporting both this year and last year in an attempt to determine the trend in maintenance costs for different classes of equipment. Ten representative companies are used in this computation. Table I shows the average cost for 1945 and 1946. It is felt that the negative trend in the maintenance cost of universal cutting machines probably represents the effect of the purchase of a relatively large number o new machines in 1946 with little maintenance cost appearing during the first yeas of operation. The grand total figure indicates an upward trend amounting to plus 18.7 pct. However, this figure is viewer with some suspicion because of the effect of the universal cutters decreasing maintenance cost and it is concluded that direct application of percentage increase should be made to types of equipment. Chairman James F. Kemp :—I call upon Prof. Albert Sau-veur to open the general discussion on the subject of sound steel ingots. Albert Sauveur, Cambridge, Mass.:—I believe that I have the privilege, this instant, of opening one of the most important, significant and far-reaching discussions ever held before this Institute. I believe that our talk this morning will be heard far and wide, not only on this side of the water, but also on the other side. Everywhere, in short, where steel is manufactured. I welcome the opportunity of expressing my mind in regard to the production of sound steel ingots, a subject about which I entertain Rome very decided opinions. I shall not attempt to discuss the relative merits of the various processes that have been described. I shall, on the contrary, confine myself to a general consideration of the important questions before us. So intensely do I feel regarding the production of sound steel ingots that I have put my remarks on paper in my desire to present my views. I have always remembered my astonishment, not to say dismay, some twenty years ago, when I beheld for the first time a steel ingot, a rail steel ingot, that had been split open from top to bottom. There was the pipe! There was an enormous cavity extending from a short distance from the top to nearly one-third of the length of the ingot; and when I was told that manufacturers seldom discarded more than one-tenth of the total length of the ingot it became evident to me that a large proportion of piped, and therefore, defective, or at least weak and dangerous, rails were manufactured; in fact, probably one rail out of six, nearly 17 per cent., of dangerous rails.

In preparing this paper the object has been to set forth facts relating to illumination problems, which, judging from the results realized in the iron and steel and other industries somewhat similar to mining, will tend toward furthering safety, production, and contentment of employees, as well as economy of operation in mines. By applying the principles of illumination with the assistance of modern appliances, the full benefits in efficiency may be derived from improvements already made in other details of mine operation. The lighting of a typical coal mine may be*divided into four distinct parts: 1, The lighting of the buildings about the top; 2, the lighting of the working faces; 3, general illumination at the bottom; and 4, special applications of lighting. The lighting of buildings about the top may be treated in the same manner as that of any other industrial plant, for we have a boiler room, an engine and generator room, a forge, a machine shop, and a hoist room. These can be well and efficiently lighted by the use of 100-watt tungsten-filament multiple lamps with proper reflectors so spaced and suspended that a power consumption of from ¼ watt per square foot in the boiler room to 1 watt per square foot in the machine shop is obtained. The methods that apply to this kind of lighting have been ably treated by a number of authors,' and for this reason a detailed discussion is unnecessary. The lighting of the working faces is usually done by means of portable lamps, of which there are four types in use: The oil torch, the acetylene Iamp, and the oil and the electric safety lamps. This paper presents a scheme for determination of precision for the various steps in coal sampling, sample preparation, and analysis. It also gives resulting data on 100 American coals from various coal fields covering all ranks from lignite to low-volatile bituminous. The variances of the various steps of the process are studied as a function of the coal preparation, the top size of coal as sampled, and the ash content. To understand the variables that control the overall precision of coal sampling, sample reduction and analysis, there is need for measurement of the variances due to successive steps of the process. The purpose of the present paper is to study these variances as a function of the coal preparation, the top size of the coal as sampled, and the ash content. The sampling data included are from 100 individual preparation plants from various coal fields in the United States and cover all ranks of coal from lignite to low-volatile bituminous; various types of preparation; deep, strip and auger mines; and, in many instances, mixtures from two or more coal beds or types of mines. The collection of data is continuing, but sufficient work has been done to draw some important conclusions. Since the work was done in conjunction with the Bureau of Mines sampling of coal, the time that could be spent at any one preparation plant was limited. This, in turn, limited the number of samples that could be taken for each coal. For this reason, the results from various plants were pooled in blocks. Two major blocking categories were "raw" and "washed!' The raw coals had no preparation other than crushing and/or screening. In view of the fact that the fineness of the resultant bullion varies with the particular treatment to which the zinc-precipitate is subjected, and since there are considerable losses attributed to both methods, the following notes on the results obtained at the Waitekauri Extended mine, Maratoto, N. Z., may be of interest. The ordinary method of roasting the vacuum-dried precipitate was adopted instead of the treatment with sulphuric acid, the necessary facilities for the latter method not being available. Moreover, provided the ordinary method is carried out with the necessary care, it is questionable if it is not the most satisfactory where large quantities of precipitate have to be handled, and where (as is generally the case in this district) a considerable amount of silver is present. All the precipitate was first washed through a 40-mesh sieve. If it was necessary to recover the bullion at once from the accumulated short zinc, it was oxidized and melted separately; but, as a general rule, being heavily charged with bullion, it was placed on the bottom of the trays at, the top end of the extractor-boxes, where it acted as an excellent precipitant, the bullion being recovered at the next clean-up. After drying on a filter with the aid of a vacuum-pump, the precipitate was weighed and removed to the oxidizing furnace, which is similar to that generally in use in New Zealand, consisting essentially of an ordinary square tray of cast-iron, with 6-in. sides, built over a brick furnace. Wood is used as fuel. The tray is hooded over with sheet-iron, fitted with a sliding-door, and the fumes pass through a flue at the top into a dust-chamber, then into the open air. Cobriza can only be described as the Machu Picchu of the mining business. This relatively new mine of the Cerro de Pasco Corp. in Peru, subsidiary of The Cerro Corp., was put on stream in December 1967. The best way to get there is to go in the company's HelioCourier with pilot Paco Perez. The plane is mostly engine and the pilot is without nerves. The trip starts at an elevation of 12,000 ft at La Oroya and ends at the Cobriza air strip near the top of the Continental Divide at 14,200 ft. Perez says this is the highest air strip in the world. The flight is made at an altibude below many of the peaks and it is easy to pick out the Inca Trail which follows the ridge line of the top of the Andes. Inca ruins are also visible from the aircraft. The drainage pattern, with a surprising number of lakes and rivers, can be seen and so, too, can a great deal of structural geology and numerous agricultural settlements dotting the altiplano. Cobriza is in the monta[n]a on the east side of the Andes, which is characterized by tropical climate and vegetation, an abrupt change from the frosty mountain atmosphere. The mountainsides are precipitous and the bottoms of the steep valleys are channels for roaring rivers. Such is the setting of Cobriza, above the swift cataracts of the Mantaro, benched out precariously at about 8700 ft elevation. The mountains rise in majestic splendor and the sun comes up late and sets at 3: 30 on winter afternoons. One of the lowest of the Cerro de Pasco camps, it is the most remote.

THE increase in the production of iron has been accompanied by a growing demand for an improved quality, and more especially at the present time, in the manufacture of Bessemer steel, which is rapidly becoming an important branch of industry. This has led the makers of pig iron to a careful investigation of the composition of the materials from which their metal is produced, the inquiry being greatly assisted by a cordial alliance of science and practice. Formerly, chemical science was held in abeyance, or admitted in a hesitating experimental way ; but now it is received as a valuable auxiliary, and its decisions are accepted as final and conclusive. It is called on to assist the iron-maker in determining the quality of his stock, and to detect the presence of injurious elements in his fuel, ores, flux, or iron. The object of this paper is to submit the method now in use at the furnaces of the Kemble Coal and Iron Company in the Broad Top coal and iron region, for removing, by a process of crushing and washing, slate and other impurities from coal, designed, when coked, for furnace fuel. It is not contemplated to claim very advanced progress in this work, believing that it is susceptible of improvement, but to show that some progress has been made in a comparatively new field, and it is hoped in the right direction, since coke is probably destined to become the principal fuel in the metallurgy of iron. The Broad Top coal region occupies an isolated geographical position, standing 25 miles east from the Alleghany field. It is associated with the latter by the structure of its coal, and more closely with the Cumberland field by a similarity in the quality of coal.

LARGER than continental United States but with only about one third the population, Brazil is a land of enormous potential wealth, waiting to be developed. During a recent visit to that country I saw Brazil at war and learned about some of the recent mineral developments. Many engineers and geologists have been sent to Brazil by various U. S. Government agencies to assist the Brazilian producers and co-operate with the Brazilian Government in producing needed war minerals. The Foreign Economic Administration staff of engineers has been active and through their assistance to the Brazilian producers, steadily increasing quantities of strategic minerals were provided to aid the United Nations' war effort. Mineral wealth has been found in almost every state of Brazil. Many mineral deposits have been discovered during the war period. Examples are: barite near Bahia; the tungsten and molybdenum deposits in Rio Grande do Norte; and corundum, beryl, and tungsten ores in Ceara.

The Pinto Valley digital control system is a supervisory system interfaced with a conventional analog control system. The design criteria, the hardware selection, and the startup of the system in the Pinto Valley concentrator are reported in depth. Examples of data collection application, as well as the present and immediate future implementation of control strategies, are discussed. This paper is a description of the digital data acquisition and control system that is installed at Cities Service's Pinto Valley concentrator.

BATTELLE Memorial Institute is an endowed in stitution for scientific research in metallurgy, fuels, and allied fields, established by the will of Gordon Battelle, 2nd, as a memorial to his father, Colonel John Gordon Battelle. Before I tell you more of what Battelle Memorial Institute is, I want to go back a bit and tell you why it is. Colonel Battelle began his services in the iron and steel industry in Wheeling in 1866 and in 1883 came to Ohio, where he successively engaged in the iron and steel industry in Cincinnati, Piqua and Columbus. The family had been prominent in Ohio affairs since 1788, when Gordon Battelle's great-great-grandfather came from New England to settle in Marietta. He was one of the pioneers and a member of the famous "Ohio Company."

The adoption of a plan of safeguarding American industry against extreme revolutionary industrial propaganda is the keynote of a report just issued by ex-Governor Robert P. Bass, of New Hampshire, covering the period of his service as. Director of the Marine and Dock Industrial Relations Division of the United States Shipping Board. He thinks that the only hope of America's resisting the tide of industrial unrest that is sweeping over the civilized world is in the development and early application of a constructive industrial program, in which program publicity and education carrried on by the Government will hold a leading place. He says: The Government should systematically inform both employers and employees in regard to many matters of the utmost interest and importance of each. It should acquaint labor with the Government's activities and service to labor in the past and should create in labor an appreciation of its joint interest with capital and with the Government in the problems of production. Satisfactory assurances should be given that labor will have a substantial voice in determining the distribution between capital and labor of the profits of production. Labor should be promised its reasonable share of any increase in production. There should be a joint determination of wages, hours, and conditions of work. Based on the foregoing principles, great emphasis should be placed on labor's interest and responsibility in the processes f production.

Dear Sir: In connection with the official notice of Dr. Raymond's unanimous election by the Directors as Secretary Emeritus, we wish to place upon record certain statements concerning his services to the Institute which we think have not been published., and may not be generally known to the majority of our fellow-members. When the Institute was formed in 1871, Dr. Raymond acted as Secretary of the Founders' Meeting, and became the first Vice-President of the Institute, and, by request of the aged and beloved David Thomas, who was the first President of the Institute, Dr. Raymond discharged all the duties of the office of President, to which he was later formally elected in 1872, and which lip held for three years. During that time, he visited Europe, and through his acquaintance and reputation abroad, established those international relations of the Institute which proved so important in later years. He also enlisted the support of the mining engineers and metallurgists of the Pacific Slope, who would not otherwise have been disposed to join a society originating in the East. And for twelve years he attended; at his own expense, nearly every meeting of the Institute, wherever held, giving to it without remuneration his best service, and sacrificing for it many professional and private interests.

Aerodyne Midget fan is a self contained blower or exhauster for auxiliary ventilation through tubing. Operating rating with 5 hp motor is 6.5 in. maximum static pressure, and 6200 cfm free delivery volume. Weight is 340 to 475 lb and it may be furnished in open or permissible form. Circle No. 2 Heavy-Density Initial installation in the Mesabi Range country of the Wilmot-Daniels heavy-density concentrating system was a 175 ton per hour plant at the [ ] Skubic Bros. Virginia, Minn., operation. This Wilmot Engineering Co. unit has a separatory vessel providing unidirectional medium flow and as the only moving part uses a standard drag-line conveyor for lifting sink out of the bath. Circle No. 3 Portable pH Meter A low priced battery-operated portable pH meter of utmost simplicity announced by the Photovolt Corp. uses only 3 ordinary radio batteries which give over 2000 hours of service. Accuracy of 0.03 pH is claimed by the manufacturer for the model 125, and AC power line supply is available. Circle No. 4

IT IS difficult to know just when a hoisting rope should be removed from service and a new one substituted. It is desirable to utilize the full life of a rope but, on .the other hand, the damage and possible loss of life, resulting from delay in replacing it may amount to many times the cost of a new rope. In the present methods of inspection the inspector must rely upon accumulated experience and a certain sixth sense or intuition in addition to any rules that may be laid down regarding the number and distribu-tion of broken wires. This condition does not neces-sarily arise from lack of interest among users or makers of rope, but is due rather to the lack of satisfactory or adequate methods for testing ropes to determine their exact condition. The main difficulty in devising a physical test lies in the fact that a number of causes, all operating in different ways, contribute to the deterioration of a rope in service, and affect not only the external conditions but also the inner structure of the material of which the rope is constructed. Wear and broken wires on the outer part of the rope are not difficult to detect, but a test is needed which will clearly indicate the presence of broken wires in the interior portions and the change in strength due to alterations in the structure and properties of the material itself.

The housing of labor and sanitation at mines in India are difficult problems to solve because-no more than two or three castes will accept the same conditions, and conditions suitable to one coal-field are not applicable to other fields. It is also necessary to consider the financial standing of the different companies. The European companies, which pay 30 per cent. and more dividends, can erect more suitable houses than the Indian companies, which are just able to keep their heads above water. The Santhal will not live in a bucca-roofed house as a permanent dwelling, and both the Santhal and Koras have an aversion to living in a line of attached huts. They have forsaken a whole, line of houses in one of which a case of sickness or death has occurred, and those houses were afterward considered unfit by all other classes of natives. The Santhals, Koras, and Douri castes will not take drinking water from a stand pipe; wells must be furnished. When well water is not available, these people will take water from the nearest pool or tank regardless of whether or not the water is stagnant. The well tops should not he completely enclosed, nor should there be a drain around the top. The ground should slope away from the well. In the Girieih coal fields, the miners have a great objection to pucca floors; they prefer earth which is lapped, easily cleaned, and renewed. As it is customary for the miner to build his own house, the company supplying the roofing material, he takes a special interest in it, keeps it in order, and hesitates to leave it. Each house is surrounded by its own bit of land, which the inmate cultivates.

The Bradford Oil District lies in the northern part of McKean County, Pa., and the southern part of Cattaraugus County, N. Y. Although petroleum was first found in the producing sand in 1871, it was not until the early part of the year 1875 that a productive horizon was acknowledged to exist, even by those most largely interested in the production of the crude oil. It has been reported to me that the first well drilled in the valley of the Tuneangewant Creek (commonly called Tuna Creek) was drilled by F. E. Dean and brothers in 1865. This well was located on the Shepherd farm, near the present site of Custer City. One hundred and sixty feet of drive pipe was used, and the hole was drilled to the depth of 900 feet. The producing sand at Custer City is found about 1130 feet below the level of the railroad track. The Shepherd farm well was therefore abandoned over 200 feet above the top of the oil sand. The next well was drilled by the Dean brothers on the Clark farm at Tarport. Drilling was stopped at a depth of 605 feet, or over 400 feet above the top of the oil sand. In the year 1862 the old Bradford well, since known as the Barnsdall well, was drilled to a depth of 200 feet with a spring pole, and then abandoned. In the spring of 1866 the citizens of the village of Bradford concluded to club together and sink the Barnsdall well deeper. It was drilled to a total depth of 875 feet, or to within 150 feet of the Bradford producing sand. All of these wells were drilled with the expectation of finding the Venango County oil, and at
