"The leaching of base and precious metal ores and concentrates continues to progress in both laboratory study and industrial application. These developments are being driven by the need to respond to difficult ores and concentrates that are not amenable to conventional treatment. In many cases alternatives are being developed to conventional treatment (e.g. Pyrometallurgy) for technical and economic reasons.In this paper, a brief general review of some new developments in leaching will be followed by a more detailed explanation of three process developments that have either been industrially applied or are expected to be applied in a short time frame. The three processes to be reviewed in detail are the Mt. Gordon Copper Process, the Anglo American Corporation/University of British Columbia Copper Process and the PLATSOL Process. These leaching processes operate at low (90°C), medium (150°C) and high (220°C) temperature and are successful in quickly and completely extracting metal values from ores and concentrates.INTRODUCTIONThe process of leaching is widely used in hydrometallurgy to selectively recover a metal of interest from an ore or a concentrate. Leaching and by extension hydrometallurgy is well established in the recovery of copper (copper heap leach ? SX-EW), nickel (Moa Bay and Caron process), zinc (roast ? leach ? electrowin and zinc pressure leach), gold (cyanidation) and uranium (acid sulfate leach). Of course this success extends to many of the metals found in nature. Recently, the importance of hydrometallurgy appears to be increasing with hydrometallurgy viewed as an attractive alternative to both traditional mineral processing and conventional smelting/converting/refining. This increasing interest has led to intensive study and increasing application. Selected developments include:Copper ? the Mt. Gordon process and new concentrate processes such as INTEC, Activox, CESL, Dynatec, Total Pressure Oxidation, MIM Albion, BioCop, and the AAC/UBC Process.Nickel ? Voisey Bay process for hydrometallurgical treatment of Voisey Bay concentrate, HPAL processing of laterites at Murrin Murrin, Bulong and Cawse, atmospheric leaching of laterites, heap bioleaching of nickel sulfides by Titan Resources (Australia).Zinc ? establishment of zinc leach, solvent extraction and electrowinning technology for treatment of the Skorpion deposit in Namibia, new developments in atmospheric and pressure leaching, the Hydrozinc process.Gold ? development of a number of thiosulfate leaching processes for recovery of gold from refractory carbonaceous ores or concentrates."

In this study, flotation tests were performed to investigate behavior of enargite and chalcopyrite ores from different sources synthetically mixed for separation of enargite. Flotation parameters including; pH, reagents concentration and type and flotation time were controlled to obtain an enargite concentrate with high As and chalcopyrite concentrate and final tailings with As content below 0.5 mass%. The copper ore bearing enargite mineral contained 5.87 mass% As and 16.50 mass% Cu while the chalcopyrite bearing ore contained 0.32 mass% As and 21.63 mass% Cu. The two ore samples were mixed at 7:3 (enargite: chalcopyrite) by weight ratio to prepare a mixed ore sample with arsenic content at 3.16 mass% and 18.25 mass% Cu for the flotation study. For enargite single ore flotation, the 38?75 µm size fraction showed that over 98% enargite was selectively recovered within 5 min at slurry pH of 4.0 and arsenic content in the final tailings was reduced to 0.22 mass%. In mix ore (enargite+chalcopyrite) flotation, 97% of enargite was first removed at pH 4 followed by chalcopyrite flotation at pH 8, and over 95% recovery was achieved in 15 min flotation time. Arsenic content in the final tailings was reduced to 0.1 mass%.

Cationic flotation using alkylamines and their derivatives as collectors, and characterized by high selectivity of mineral particle separation, is finding ever growing industrial application. In recent years the industrial application has been initiated of new cationic collectors - alkylmorpholines. Efficiency of cationic surfactants operation as collectors is dependent upon their colloid and sorption properties and the availability of silicate .carbonate rock-forming mineral impurities in the ore, which sorb the cationic collector. Investigations have been carried out on the influence of frothers and organic depressors with various compositions upon physical-chemical and flotation properties of alkylamines and alkylmorpholines. On the basis of these investigations requirements for organic depressor were developed and new flotation reagents were proposed (V-1 frother and KS-MF depressor). The use of new reagents enables one to decrease considerably the consumption of expensive cationic collectors and to enhance the floatability of coarse mineral particles. Data of new reagents industrial application is presented. The reagents developed can be used for flotation processing of other ores.

In this paper, the results emerging from the several basic and applied studies performed to provide fundamental understanding of the interplay between clay pulp chemistry, orthokinetic flocculation performance, particle interactions, applied shear and dewaterability of fine clay mineral dispersions are presented, reconciled, and discussed. Modification of pulp chemistry and behaviour was achieved by using kaolinite and Na-exchanged (swelling) smectite clay minerals, divalent metal ions (Ca(II), Mn(II)) as coagulants and high molecular weight, anionic polyacrylamide copolymers: carboxylate substituted (PAM A) and 2-amido 2-methyl propane sulphonate (PAM S) (PAM S), non-ionic polyacrylamide homopolymer (PAM N) and non-conventional, non-ionic polyethylene oxide (PEO) as flocculants. Clear links between pulp interfacial chemistry, particle interactions and dewatering behaviour, resulting from the influence of hydrolyzable metal ion, pH, temperature, polymer structure type and shear, are established. Optimum conditions for improved, orthokinetic flocculation performance of negatively charged clay particles, reflecting faster settling flocs (>10 m/h) comprised: (i) coagulation, (ii) moderate agitation rate, (iii) shorter agitation time and (iv) anionic rather than non-ionic PAM. The optimum flocculation conditions did not, however, have a significant impact on the final sediment solid content of 20 ? 25 wt%. Further application of shear to pre-sedimented pulps improved consolidation by 5 - 15 wt % solid. Application of the findings and new knowledge gained to real plant tails? case studies for marked improvement in dewaterability through thickening is demonstrated.

The present research covers the results of experiments carried out with high frequency vibration screen on dewatering of coal fines. In the tests, the addition of surface active reagents was studied employing a high frequency vibrating screen. To increase the efficiency of mechanical dewatering processes, ultrasonic treatment was applied along with surfactants and optimum dewatering conditions were obtained. The moisture content of the feed material was from 82.5% to 41% by the optimization of operation parameters including the angle of the screen, vibration frequency, feed rate and screen opening size. Optimum parameters obtained in dewatering processes carried out with the vibrating screen were kept constant and the effects of surface active reagents and ultrasonic treatment on dewatering were investigated. Finally, the moisture level of the material was further reduced from 41.0% to 37.66%.

"It developed an alternative to traditional flotation enrichment refractory of complex lead-zinc ores to obtain conditional lead and zinc products. The scheme involves the use of the processing method of gravitational enrichment of the primary cycle and the combined gravity-flotation-hydrometallurgical in finishing. The method has a high level of comprehensive utilization of mineral raw materials in relation to the elements that are extracted in the process of enrichment in lead concentrate, and the increase in recoverable value of processed ores. INTRODUCTION The primary source of lead are complex sulphide lead-zinc ore, lead ore actually rarer. The value of lead and zinc ores (except lead and zinc) is determined by the presence in them of a wide range of associated components: silver, contained mainly in galena; gold; bismuth in the form of its own minerals, but is associated with galena; cadmium contained mainly in the sphalerite; indium, thallium and gallium contained in sphalerite and galena; selenium and tellurium are present as impurities in the sulfide, tellurium is also found in the form of its own minerals. Of note harmful impurities antimony, which is often associated with lead sulphosalts and arsenic, having a substantially own minerals. By quality (content of lead, or the total content of lead and zinc) lead-zinc ores are divided into rich, ordinary and poor; by oxidation - to sulfide (with a lead oxides content less than 15% and zinc oxide content less than 10%), mixed and oxidized (50% oxide); the latter have a subordinate importance as a source of zinc and lead. Traditionally, the most contrasting technological properties of sulfide ores of nonferrous metals considered flotation properties, which determines the priority in the selection of flotation technology of their enrichment. Other methods of enrichment - gravity (jigging and enrichment in heavy suspensions), radiometric sorting (separation) are used as preliminary operations whose main purpose is to increase the content of lead and zinc in the ore sent to flotation, as well as the removing of part of empty rock in dumping tails prior to flotation. Effective implementation of these methods is possible at large size emphasizing in the ore of lead and zinc minerals, which is typical of the rich ores and which so far mainly worked. At the same time, non-ferrous metal ores (polymetallic, lead-zinc, copper-zinc, etc.) have a sufficiently high contrast to gravitational properties since ore minerals have a higher density compared with a rock minerals. But the gravity of the practice of non-ferrous ores enrichment is not widely used, despite its high degree of environmental safety and lower cost expensive."

In the present work, we report a novel microstructure of synthesized scalenohedral PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate) without any additives by a simple and ecofriendly carbonation process carried out in a liquid-gas system on the crystal growth of the scalenohedral calcite phase. Especially, the process parameters of Ca(OH)2 concentration and CO2 flow rates were investigated to enhance the sensitivity of the process. The highest average length of the scalenohedral calcite was obtained at pH 6.0, temperature 450C, Ca(OH)2 concentration 0.2M, CO2 flow rate 80mL/min, and total volume 1L. The utilization of flue gas-derived CO2 from coal fired power plants could be a form of carbon capture and storage using carbonation reaction with scalenohedral PCC. Finally, the synthesized scalenohedral PCC was used as a filer for ONP recycling. We demonstrated all these experiemnts at semi pilot plant scale.

Emissions from pyrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates are usually subjected to wet scrubbing. The washing sulphuric acid so produced contains up to 0.2 g/L of rhenium, which is recovered by solvent extraction in the form of crude ammonia permeate (NH4ReO4). The mother liquor, obtained from the sulfuric acid wash, contains up to 35 g/L of rhenium and significant amounts of impurities. Crude rhenium salt is commonly processed by double recrystallization to produce marketable salt. A ton of high grade NH4ReO4 can be produced using 3.0-3.5 m3 of mother liquor. We propose an efficient technology of mother liquor pre-treatment aimed at removal of water-soluble organics with subsequent electrodialysis. Electrodialysis of mother liquor in a multichamber electrodialyzer resulted in the production of pure rhenium acid, from which a marketable NH4ReO4 is precipitated using ammonia solution. Multiple steps of recycling consisting of dissolution of NH4ReO4 salt, rhenium acid production from NH4ReO4 salt by electrodialysis and precipitation of NH4ReO4 from rhenium acid made it possible to upgrade the purity of obtained rhenium compounds by 1-2 orders of magnitude. A rhenium metal powder of 99.997% purity was produced by high-temperature reduction of high-purity NH4ReO4 with gaseous hydrogen. Rhenium metal powder of high purity can be produced from sulfate solutions of NH4ReO4 by non-platinum anode-based membrane electrolysis processes also. "Faculty of Mining, Ecology, Process Control and Geotechnology, Technical University, Košice, Slovakia An industrial eccentric vibratory mill was used for direct and short-time mechanochemical reduction of ilmenite concentrate (FeTiO3) and anatase (TiO2) with magnesium metal powder in order to reduce Fe and Ti resp. and hereby to convert them to the more soluble phases suitable for further hydrometallurgical processing. X-ray diffraction analysis of FeTiO3 after 60 min of milling with Mg confirmed the presence of Fe0 and Mg2TiO4 phases and for TiO2 after 180 min of milling the new TiO and MgO phases have appeared. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has detected Fe0 (metal) and Mg2+ species which are corresponding to the product of FeTiO3 mechanochemical reduction. The product of TiO2 mechanochemical reduction has revealed XPS spectral lines corresponding to Ti2+, Ti4+ and Mg2+ species on its surface. Morphology of mechanochemically reduced samples was studied by scanning electron microscopy analysis. Subsequent leaching of mechanochemically reduced FeTiO3 and TiO2 was performed in dilute HCl and H2SO4 at 80oC and compared with mechanically activated samples. The recovery of Ti has reached 100% for FeTiO3 and 79% for TiO2 after 60 min of leaching. Based on this study the flowsheet for possible processing of natural refractory titanium ores patented by author was adapted and documented. INTRODUCTION Ilmenite (FeTiO3), along with rutile (TiO2) represents the most important titanium resource necessary for titanium industry, for production of titanium metal, alloys and pigment grade TiO2 which are becoming more important and versatile for various industries such as an aircraft and aerospace, navy, chemical, automotive, medical and offshore wind industries, for machine and plant engineering and architecture as well, mainly due to high corrosion resistance. Pigment grade TiO2 is utilizing in pigment, plastic, glass, paper and rubber industries (Zhang, 2011). There are obvious research efforts for development of the potential alternatives to the expensive thermo-chemical commercial processes of titanium raw materials processing. Zhang (2011) has summarized conventional thermo- a electrochemical processes which involved a combination of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and electrometallurgical technologies and highlighted the improved hydrometallurgical routes promising for commercial application in the future. Such improvement could also be mechanical activation of FeTiO3, TiO2 by high-energy milling which causes their structural disordering, the changes of physical and chemical properties, consequently and has a positive effect on the dissolution kinetics (Achimovicová et al., 2014a, 2017, Baláž, 2008). The various types of mills such as a planetary ball mill, a vertical ball mill, a drum mill, an attritor were used for mechanical activation of FeTiO3 as a pretreatment process for subsequent leaching (Achimovicová et al., 2014)."

This paper describes some advances in flotation research in fines (“F” 38 to 13 µm) and ultrafines (“UF” < 13 µm) mineral recovery by two different techniques, at laboratory scale. Extender flotation and flotation with .multi-bubbles. (bubbles with a wide size distribution) of copper sulphide fines (ore feed of about 1 % Cu) were compared with a .standardised. mill laboratory procedure. Comparative evaluation was made through concentrate grade and recovery (size by size results included), .true. (bubbles-particles attachment only) flotation recoveries and process kinetics. Both techniques yielded higher metallurgical efficiencies than the mill standard but better results were obtained with the extender flotation, with emulsified diesel oil (90 gt-1). Concentrate recoveries were of the order of 85-90 % (84 % in standard conditions), 14-17 % Cu grade (15 % Cu in the standard) and 3.5-4.5 min-1 for the Klimpel rate constant (3 min-1 in the standard). Size by size and true flotation results proved that metallurgical and kinetic gains, obtained with the two techniques, might be attributed to fines and ultrafines enhancement. Data obtained are discussed in terms of physical and physico-chemical parameters related to aggregation and capture (of particles by bubbles) phenomena and the practical potential of these techniques are envisaged.

This article reviews factors of preg-robbing effect, occurring in the course of pressure oxidation of ore and concentrates, containing chloride compounds and so-called &apos;organic carbon&apos;. The article also summarizes the main results of the studies and testwork conducted to overcome this effect. The following efficient preg-robbing mitigation methods have been noted: higher temperature of pressure oxidation process, preliminary removal of natural carbonaceous material from concentrate, chloride removal prior to concentrate pressure oxidation, and addition of water-soluble organic blanking agents, which suppress the adsorption activity of the native ore adsorbents. It is now common to have archival history of thousands of sensors sampled every second over long time. Yet we frequently have process engineers complain:??.We are drowning in data but starving for information??. How can these rich data sets be put to use? This paper addresses the issue of information and knowledge extraction from data with emphasis on process and performance monitoring including fault detection and isolation. Most of the major plant, factory, process, equipment and tool disruptions are avoidable, and yet preventable fault detection and diagnosis strategies are not the norm in most industries. It is not uncommon to see simple and preventable faults disrupt the operation of an entire integrated manufacturing facility. For example, faults such as malfunctioning sensors or actuators, inoperative alarm systems, poor controller tuning or configuration can render the most sophisticated control systems useless. Such disruptions can cost in the excess of $1 million per day and on the average they rob the plant of 7% of its annual capacity. Over the last decade the fields of multivariate statistics and data visualization and analysis methods have merged to develop powerful sensing and condition-based monitoring systems for predictive fault detection and diagnosis.These methods rely on the notion of sensor fusion whereby data from many sensors or units are combined with process information, such as physical connectivity of process units, to give a holistic picture of health of an integrated plant. Such methods are at a stage where these strategies are being implemented for off-line and on-line deployment. An ingenious methodology purposively developed by the authors for comprehensive assessment of flotation properties, electrophysical characteristics and. crystal chemistry features of natural gold-bearing sulfide minerals of different origin has been used in this study. Examination of the elemental composition of the minerals, ion-molecular components of the liquid phase in suspensions, surface properties of sulfides and different flotation reagents sorption forms was performed using the methods of X-ray phase and spectral analysis, potentiometry, UV and IR spectrometry, computer image analysis, and computer simulation techniques. The role of isomorphous impurities in the formation of hydrophobic sulfhydric collector layers on mineral surfaces in complex ore processing has been elucidated. The parameters characterizing the variability of the Fe:S ratio in pyrite of different origin have been determined based on non-stoichiometry characteristics of natural gold-bearing sulfide crystals. An ingenious method of formatting and linear approximation of experimental data was used to find out the quantitative relationships between the impurity content, electrophysical characteristics, non-stoichiometry and floatability of pyrite from a number of different deposits. The effect of the impurity species present in sulfides on the characteristic pH value marking the floatability peaks as such and their trend of shift towards higher alkalinity has been revealed. A theoretical substantiation has been given to prognostic assessment criteria for processing characteristics of gold-bearing sulfide minerals with varying composition. New flotation reagents and advanced reagent systems which help to increase the contrast of processing characteristics for different gold-bearing sulfides, resulting in improved selectivity, have been developed. The mechanism of selective flotation of precious metal-bearing Fe and As sulfides achieved by using short-chain dithiocarbamates and a mixture of cyclic trithiocarbonate with oxyalkylsulfides has been analyzed.

This contribution deals with bubble adhesion on particle surface which consists of three steps ? the liquid film thinning, the film rupture and expansion of the three phase contact (TPC). Our attention is devoted to the third step ? to the description of the TPC expansion. Three-phase contact line expansion can be theoretically described using hydrodynamic and molecular-kinetic models. Both of these models were originally developed for the interaction of the bubble with horizontal plane in pure water. Our experiments deal mainly with the interaction of the bubble with the inclined plane in the solution of surface active agents. It was proved experimentally that molecular-kinetic model corresponds also to these conditions and this model was used for the description of the TPC expansion. The model is based on the theoretical description of the bubble contact angle on the three-phase interface. These contact angles change dramatically from 180o to equilibium (Young) contact angle close to 90o. Modificated ADSA method is used for the calculation of the contact angle. This method utilizes the Laplace equation of the capillarity; the bubble profile and the contact angle are evaluated using the set of experimental points around the edge of the bubble. The comparison of the experimental and calculated bubble profile shows a good agreement. The aim of the project is to describe the process of the TPC expansion during the adhesion of the bubble with the diameter up to 1 mm. Inclined planes were used instead of an experimental solid particle. Our experiments were provided in the solution of surface active compounds. The process of the adhesion was recorded using high-speed digital camera and images were evaluated using the image analysis software NIS-Elements. "Nickel-metal hydride batteries (Ni-MH) are storers of electrochemical energy, which have a higher specific storage capacity than lead or nickel-cadmium batteries. The demand for Nickel-metal hydride batteries is increasing rapidly since their market launch in the early 1990’s. Today there is no suitable and sustainable recycling process to recover nickel, cobalt and rare-earth metals. The discarded batteries are used today in the steel industry as alloy material because they contain nickel. Cobalt and rare-earth metals (RE) are lost; they are non-recycleable.In a German governmental funded research project, IME Aachen, ACCUREC Mühlheim and UVR-FIA Freiberg are cooperating in processing as well as in creating a feasibility study. The target of this project is the development of a new recycling process for metal recovery from Ni-MH-batteries. The proposed process described in this paper consists of a combination of mechanical, pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing steps. This process is capable of treating all types of Ni-MH-batteries. After comminution steel and organics are separated. The separated Ni-MH is smelted in an electric arc furnace. The products are a nickel-cobalt alloy and a slag phase enriched with rare-earth oxides for further treatment to ‘mischmetal’. Both the Nickel-Cobalt alloy and the ‘mischmetal’ will be directly used in battery production."

Most of the quantity of the water soluble xanthates, used in mineral flotation, is consumed in the process. However, the residue amounts are water contaminants downstream the mineral processing operations and can be toxic to aquatic biota at concentrations of 1 mg/L. In order to be able to discharge water from tailing ponds to natural water bodies the concentration of xanthates has to be decreased. The present paper studies the uptake of potassium ethyl xanthate by directly modified with copper and lead ions natural zeolitic rock, without passing through zeolite transformation into homoionic form. Modified zeolite exhibits high, comparable with powdered activated carbon of chemical purity grade, capacity to remove potassium ethyl xanthate from model wastewater, with pH in the range of 7?9 and pollutant concentration in the range of 10-150 mg/L. The pollutant immobilization is fast. Both Cu and Pb modified zeolite behave as selective with respect to xanthate in the model wastewater, and Cu-modified zeolite possesses higher selectivity. "Grinding has a significant economic impact on ore dressing/processing, therefore the sizing of mills has an outstanding role.In most cases, the sizing of dry or wet mills for ore processing is primarily based on the determination of the Bond grindability index, using the Bond-Kjos-Rowland relations. In several cases, grinding takes place under conditions different from these and the grinding conditions have a great influence on the post-grinding process. This is particularly true for the grinding of bauxites where grinding takes place in alkali, often in higher temperature (up to 100 ºC) in alkali Liquor. So it is necessary to develop a testing method providing a reliable grindability index even under these special circumstances (grinding in alkalis medium at different temperatures) and allowing a more precise mill sizing. The new heated mill is suitable to determine the grindability index under temperature-controlled circumstances, in liquids with different temperatures (water, alkali). This paper presents in detail the equipment, the conditions (parameters) of the testing process for wet and alkaline grinding, the measuring results and the conclusions."

Indian National Steel Policy envisages ambitious three fold rise in steel production by the year 2020. This paper covers the iron ore industry in India which cater to the need of iron ore requirement of Indian iron and steel sector as well as export commitment in addition to addressing the industry?s key concern to attain the same. The main contents are (i) resources and its exploitation; covering status of exploration, reserves and resources, province wise occurrences, distribution, nature of mineralization and generation of fines, etc ; (ii) use of iron ore in iron and steel making, covering physical and chemical requirements for pig iron and sponge iron production; (iii) ore characteristics and beneficiation practice in vogue; (iv) projected steel demand and requirement of quality iron ore and provision thereof; (v) recovery of iron values from in situ low-grade ores and stacked fine rejects (-10/-6 mm) inclusive of slimes (-0.15 mm) from tailing ponds; (vi) agglomeration of fine concentrates preferably by pelletization; (vii) measures to augment iron ore availability for future requirements.

"In the mineral-processing field, bioleaching of metal sulphide concentrates is currently operated in very large mechanically agitated tanks. Such bioreactors have considerable requirements in terms of power consumption for mixing, aeration and heat transfer. The use of slurry bubble column, where the particles are suspended by gas motion as well as by liquid upward flow, could be an alternative to achieve bioleaching in more economical conditions. In order to compare these two techniques, a unit of stirred reactors in cascade and a bubble column were comparatively operated at laboratory scale in the bioleaching of a pyrite concentrate. For both pieces of equipment, experiments were performed not only in batch mode but also in continuous conditions.Bubble column performances were significantly affected by unpredictable technical difficulties met to maintain continuous feeding in the bubble column and by a significant settling of the heavy solid particles. Nonetheless, theoretical kinetic data, extrapolated from results in batch conditions, could be compared to those obtained in continuous tests, in bubble column and in mechanically agitated reactors. These kinetic data were used to evaluate the influence of reactor design and configuration choice on bioleaching performances."
