THIS paper proposes to give a general description of the pumping and other machinery in use at the Thames Hauraki Pumping Station, situated on the Thames goldfields of the North Island, New Zealand. An idea of the general arrangement of the pumping engines and pumps can be obtained, together with a certain amount of detail, by reference to the illustrations. The history of the pump is rather interesting, and is as follows: -In 1894 the Government decided that a subsidy of £1 for £1up to an amoUllt not exceeding £25,000 be granted towards the erection of suitable machinery to exploit the Thames low levels.With a guarantee of such assistance a company was floated in London, with a capital of £300,000, to develop several properties at Thames. As the old Queen of Beauty Company had produced bullion worth £400,000 prior to closing down on account ofa breakdown to its pumping gear, their shaft was chosen as the site of the principal work. As soon as the company was floated, operations were commenced at the Queen of Beauty shaft, situated at the entrance of the Waio-Karaka Creek, and not more than about half a mile distant from the principal mines on the field.

Fracture initiation and propagation, being one of the most intensive subjects in rock mechanics; contribute significantly to the deformation of jointed rock masses. An experimental study on fractured granitic rock was carried out to determine the peak strength of specimen under triaxial loading conditions. The commonly observed failure mode for rock specimens in this study was found to be the shearing of the plane of weakness. The minimum peak strength of fractured rock is observed when the joint orientation is approximately 70° to the horizontal axis. Based on experimental test data, an empirical expression was developed to accommodate the effect of joint orientation and joint trace length in estimating the peak strength of fractured rocks. The predicted values of peak strength using the proposed equation well agree with the experimental results carried out on singly fractured specimens under triaxial loading conditions. The threshold stress values of crack initiation and propagation depend on joint geometrical parameters, their degree of interconnectivity, as well as surrounding stresses on the fracture plane.

Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest cost in underground mining operations. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of belt conveyors, a common practice in coal and similar soft miner ii mines. This is particularly true if oversize ore and rock can he eliminated prior to conveying; thus producing a demand for crushers near the production areas. Portable feeder-breakers are extensively used in conveyorized mines, but no suitable, equivalent equipment, is available to provide these benefits to hard rock mines of low to medium headroom. A hard rock crusher capable of easy movement and readily disassembled would allow use to belt conveyors and could improve the general safety and productivity of any underground ore hauling system. This report summarizes proposals and findings made in conjunction with the newly designed M-44 Low Head Portable Crusher which is believed well capable of meeting the requirements of a "portable, underground, hard rock" machine as previously defined in earlier reports. Data gathered by use of the 1/4 Scale Model of the M-44 has substantiated and verified the concept sufficiently to justify construction of a full-size machine for further testing under actual mine conditions.

Through a unique partnership between the Colorado Mine Safety and Training Program (CMSTP), the Colorado Rock Products Association (CRPA) and the Higher Education and Advanced Technology (HEAT) Center, a video packed, dazzling CD-ROM training program was developed for new miners entering the aggregate industry. Why this product was developed, and why the aggregate industry, will be discussed along with the challenges faced throughout the project. Cooperation from every one involved including MSHA made this the product of which all other training materials in the mining industry will be measured against in the 21st Century. This product's versatility and wide application makes it a tool that is as critical to a mine's success as any earth moving machine. Developed with both state and federal grant moneys allows this product to be affordable to small operators and independent contractors. The quality of this two CD-ROM set rivals any commercially made CD-ROM training.

Outotec?s direct leaching process is an atmospheric leaching process for sulphidic zinc concentrates. The direct leaching process, based on special leaching reactors developed by Outokumpu, is the most economical way to produce electrolytic zinc. The production scale applications of the process realized so far are in use at Boliden?s Kokkola and Odda zinc plants. A new full-scale application of Outotec?s direct leaching process will be started in 2008 in China. The process is integrated to the existing production plant, replacing part of the old production facilities by modern technology. Besides high zinc extraction the plant expansion and modernization offers also indium recovery, iron precipitation and solution purification processes. The process equipment includes tailor-made reactors designed on the basis of the work and experience of Outotec research center. G. Campbell The paper by M. Lonoff looks at the importance of byproduct prices on copper production. The paper develops several interesting points on this topic, but there are some points in the theoretical discussion that could use further development. A couple of these theoretical topics will be considered here using the paper's framework of assumptions without concern about how realistic the assumptions are for the copper industry. Lonoff's theoretical model is based on a static, homogenous world where all copper/byproduct deposits are identical, and these deposits are the main source of these metals. Due to the importance of the byproducts to the production decision, the term coproducts will be substituted for the term byproducts to reflect more accurately this condition. The conclusion is drawn that a rise in coproduct prices necessitates a decrease in copper prices because copper production is increased as a consequence of increased coproduct production. The observation that real world behavior does not always follow this pattern is dismissed as "speculation." However, it can be easily shown that within this simple framework market forces might create the observed behavior. The key question to be answered is what causes coproduct prices to rise. Three possible cases will be used as illustrations. The first case is the one implicity assumed by Lonoff. Here, the demand for coproducts increases at all prices (an outward parallel shift of the demand curve) with the demand for copper remaining constant. As reported in the paper, the results are higher coproduct prices, an increase in coproduct production, and lower copper prices due to the resulting increase in copper production. The second case is when the supply of coproducts are constrained-leading to higher market prices. Copper production, as required by the simple model, is also reduced which Reply by M. Lonoff Campbell's comments give me an opportunity to clarify a few points in "Copper and Its Byproducts." That paper examined the affect of byproducts on the copper market and considered the relative riskiness of multi-metal deposits from an investment standpoint. That brief note made no attempt to be exhaustive. Nevertheless, Campbell's comments miss the point of the paper and necessitate a response. My "theoretical model" was static and I freely conceded after introducing the assumption of identical deposits that "none of the assumptions hold." These simplifying assumptions allowed me to bound the possible effects of higher byproduct prices on the copper price by assuming identical deposits and computing average price effects. I took great pains to subsequently explain that since deposits are not identical the identity of the marginal deposit might change due to byproduct price changes. In this case, average price affects will overstate the affect of byproducts on copper prices. According to Campbell, I dismiss as speculation any "real world behavior that does not always follow this pattern" (of metals prices moving in opposite directions). In the byproducts paper I noted that gold, copper, and silver price movements often parallel each other on an intra-day or day-to-day basis. Such movements are largely due to market anticipation of or reaction to changes in interest rates that affect carrying costs of metals stocks. Other movements may be due to anticipated changes in available supply or physical requirements. I loosely grouped these effects as speculative. To distinguish this statement from the main thrust of the paper, I contined "In the long run if gold and silver prices remain high the equilibrium copper price will be lower." The paper set out long run equilibrium conditions rather than attempting to explain price movements on a daily basis or on a year-to-year basis.

Today, mine backfilling has become an integral part of mining operations, both from a local and overall ground control point of view, and as regards mining techniques and environmental considerations. During the past decade, substantial research has been carried out to contribute to the better understanding of the mechanisms involved in mine backfill behaviour. This work involved analytical, experimental and numerical studies at different scales. Accordingly, this work has been aimed at developing backfill design guidelines for actual working conditions. Backfill design for deep mining conditions is complex and requires understanding of various elements. The most important of these elements are: backfill inherent strength parameters, backfill placement method, stope geometry and interaction between backfill and host rock. The mobilization of backfill strength parameters controls the backfill behaviour and thus, its failure mode. It is believed that the governing boundary conditions and backfill-rock interaction influence the backfill strength mobilization significantly. Accordingly, the interaction between backfill and host rock is an influential factor in overall backfill behaviour under applied loads. The focus of this research is to investigate the backfill-rock interaction, considering a nonlinear behaviour for both backfill and rock mass. Assuming typical stope geometry, the FLAC code was used to model the complex boundary condition associated with narrow vein mining conditions and to simulate the backfill behaviour. A comprehensive numerical study was conducted and the results obtained were compared against field observations. The analysis of findings provides qualitative results, which can be used for backfill design. When a large area of open gob collapses suddenly, a windblast is produced that can cause considerable damage throughout the infrastructure of a mine. In a few cases, the windblast has been accompanied by ignitions of methane and/or coal dust. This paper describes the conduct and results of laboratory tests involving the compression of mixtures of air, methane and coal dust under a falling weight and while allowing controlled escape of the mixture. The transient responses on pressure and temperature sensors were recorded. In addition to an analysis of those records, the paper highlights those conditions in which ignitions occurred.

A recently developed technique for use in collieries is described in which samples of gas of relatively high vitiation value are obtained from points deep within a developing goaf by means of pipes. This technique prevents dilution of small quantities of carbon monoxide by large quantities of fresh ventilation air and eliminates interference from shotfiring gases. By using the technique it should be possible to assign a characteristic ratio of carbon monoxide to oxygen consumed to any district and to predict the onset of heatings.INTRODUCTIONGas analysis has played a vital role in detecting heatings in collieries all over the world. By analysing return air from a district and by calculating the percentage ratio of volume of carbon monoxide found to oxygen consumed (known simply as the "carbon monoxide ratio") it has been found possible, in many cases, to assign a characteristic ratio to a district under consideration. This characteristic ratio serves as an index of the spontan~ous combustion tendency of a goaf area. Any definite and consistent increase in the ratioabove the normal figure· indicates that a heating is developing and hence adequate preparations may be made to deal with the trouble.This ratio technique was developed by Graham (1920-21) who found (Table 1) that the temperature of oxidizing coal was directly related to the ratio obtained from analyses of the effluent gas.Until recently, most attempts to employ a similar technique in collieries working the Greta Seam (N.S.W.) were not successful. Charleston Water System?s Daniel Island Extension Tunnel, initially thought to be the simplest of the four replacement tunnels to design and build, became the most challenging after the discovery of an unexpected 30-ft thick lens of sand in the normally consistent Cooper Marl while sinking a shaft on Daniel Island. This paper will explore the challenges involved with determining the extent of the unforeseen lens of sand, the accelerated boring program, and the redesign of the vertical alignment?keeping the alignment between the sand layer and the bottom of the Cooper River. It will describe how the challenges were overcome, and how the Owner, Engineer, and Contractor were able to team together to achieve the desired results.

The eastern Washington— Idaho clay region stretches along the northeast margin of the Columbia basin for 150 mil es. The three better known and developed clay areas are Clayton, Wash., (2 miles north of Spokane); Mica, Wash., (10 miles southeast of Spokane); and Moscow-Deary-Bovill, Latah County, Idaho (about 80 to 90 miles southeast of Spokane) see Fig. 1. Clays from the eastern Washington— Idaho clay area have been mined for more than 50 years. At present Mica, Washington deposits are used by the Gladding—McBean & Co. to make a variety of bricks and ceramic products and Latah County, Idaho clays are used by the A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. to make refractories. The Anaconda Co. made an intensive investigation of the clay deposits in the northeastern Washington-!daho area in 1919 to determine the existence of a supply of raw materials from which alumina could be made. The greater part of the work, which included systematic drilling and shaft sinking, was concentrated at Mica, Wash. This was part of a research project carrted on by the Anaconda Metallurgical Research Dept. under the direction of Frederick Laist and F. Frick and it was terminated in 4920. V. D. Perry, Vice President and Chief Geologist for The Anaconda Co., in 1952 assigned the writer to make a preliminary study of clay and other potential sources of alumina ore in the Pacific Northwest with particular emphasis on those deposits which might be of future importance to The Anaconda Co9s. then new aluminurri plant at Columbia Falls, Mont.

When an aqueous suspension of pyrite and a manganese ore reacts with oxygen, manganese is dissolved by the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid produced in situ by oxidation of pyrite. In the absence of added acid, the optimum conditions are: a molecularratio of Mn02/FeS2 of about 1·0, a temperature of about 1400 C., and an oxygen pressure between 25 and 90 lb./sq. in. Under these conditions, complete extraction of manganese is obtained in six hours leaching. An addition of sulphuric acid enables an Mn02/FeS2 ratio of 2·0 to be used successfully.Manganous sulphate decreases in solubility with increase in temperature above 1000 C., but even when the solubility limit is reached during leaching, reaction to form MnS04 still proceeds, and on cooling the MnS04 redissolves.INTRODUCTIONMany manganese deposits contain secondary manganese oxide minerals which are difficult to concentrate. Considerable attention has therefore been given to their hydrometallurgical treatment. In most manganese oxide minerals, the manganese is quadrivalent and must be reduced to the divalent state for dissolution. Reduction and dissolution can be accomplished in a number of ways, one method being to use aqueous ferrous sulphate solutions.A possible source of ferrous sulphate is pyrite as it is known that ferrous ion is an intermediate product in the aqueous oxidation of pyrite. It was therefore thought possible, that by heating an aqueous suspension of manganese oxide and pyrite with oxygen, the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid formed from pyrite would provide the necessary leaching reagents for manganese in situ. Several nonstandard drilling, sampling, and analytical techniques are therefore required to characterize the subsurface. Ultra fine grinding is becoming increasingly used in the mining industry over recent years. The development of large-scale units for high volume grinding of low value materials and concentrates has opened up new areas of economical metal extraction. The ability of stirred vertical mills to produce very fine particles with high surface areas, is providing mine operators with novel extraction possibilities within gold concentrate regrind for Biox or leach feed, Activox autoclave feed preparation and lime slaking operations. The paper will review design, operational and maintenance aspects of ANI-Metprotech stirred vertical mills, comparing these to tower mills, horizontal bead mills and attrition mills.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Tech (Metallurgical Engineering) degree Fine coal of the Goedehoop Colliery is dewatered by centrifuging before being sold. Full-scale plant tests were carried out to reduce residual cake moisture by the addition of surfactants. It is believed that by modifying the interface between the coal surface and the adherent surface water, as well as the water occluded in the cake voids, drainage is improved. Two anionic surfactants at concentrations up to 150 g/t were tested on coal of <0.5 mm size. The results demonstrate that quite high additions of surfactant (80 g/t)were needed to reduce moisture from 20 to about 17?18%. It was observed that when increasing surfactant additions at low levels, within a very narrow concentration range, the retained moisture first increased sharply only to decrease sharply immediately thereafter; this effect points to a critical surfactant concentration. Based on the obtained results, the use of surfactants cannot be recommended at this stage; further investigations under more controlled conditions are required.

It is aimed at focusing the Bureau&apos;s role in environmental research supporting oil shale development with respect to the activities of other involved government agencies and private industry. Environmental considerations in oil shale extraction, such as ecological disturbances, health and safety hazards, waste management, and socioeconomic impacts, are discussed along with the type of research known to be planned by organizations to ameliorate these problems.

Some important mineral fields are referred to in discussing the formation of placer deposits in Australia.Testing methods include boring by hand, with percussion rigs, with auger and pit digging drills, and by vibro drilling.Sampling errors are minimized by the use of correct techniques and equipment for boring, sampling and sample dressing. A hypothetical set of data is used to demonstrate the final process of evaluation, and somerelevant taxation provisions are discussed.
