This paper is focused on describing the pilot and demonstration plants for pyrolysis process of mixed plastic wastes developed at Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER). These plants were constructed at KIER (300 ton/yr) and also Korea R & D Company (3,000 ton/yr) in Kimjae city, in Korea. The raw material used was mixed plastic wastes that were generated from household and industry, etc. The liquid products obtained by pyrolysis at around 400°C were used as an alternative fuel oil. These processes were controlled by automatic control system with continuous operation in a control room. Main process units consist of automatic feeding, melting, thermal cracking systems and vacuum distillation. Their characteristics were automatic pyrolysis operation under vacuum atmospheric pressure, continuous control in feeding of raw material and discharging of solid residue, the recirculation of cracked reactant with a high temperature into the melting reactor and continuous pyrolysis of reactant in circulation thermal cracking system such as constant stirred tank reactor (CSTR), plug flow reactor and light/heavy oil separator, in order to maximize the efficiency of light oil products like kerosene and diesel. In addition, the process performance of pilot plant was described.

In this work, mesophilic and thermophilic cultures have been used in the presence of silver as a catalyst. Chalcopyrite and byproducts of bioleaching were characterized in order to: a) obtain information about the kinetics control of the process, and b) explain the different behaviour observed during the mineral attack. With thermophilic microorganisms (68°C and Norris medium as nutrient) the reaction stopped at approximately 65% copper extraction, with and without Ag ion addition as a catalyst. The remaining chalcopyrite appears surrounded by hydronium jarosite (with ammonium ion in substitution in the "alkaline site"), goethite and elemental sulphur. With mesophilic cultures (35°C and 9K medium as nutrient) the reaction stopped at approximately 25% copper extraction (without Ag) and approximately. 85% extraction (with Ag). In both cases, the remaining chalcopyrite was surrounded by agglomerates of ammonium jarosite (with hydronium ion substitution in the "alkaline site") and some iron oxides and/or hydroxides.

This paper presents results of bench scale laboratory evaluation of a processes developed by FESI and Brookhaven National Laboratories for the extraction and recovery of Pb and other heavy metals from incinerator ash which was subsequently modified by FESI for the extraction and recovery of Pb from soils excavated from a FESI client scrap yard and battery breaking operation facility. The specific waste matrix presented within the paper is a battery acid contaminated surficial soil at 0" to 12" depth. The extraction method was found to be highly successful on the bench scale in generating a final post-extracted soil matrix which passed TCLP Pb regulatory limits and retained minimal Pb after aggressive extraction application. The paper findings at this time are brief, as a majority of the research results are currently being compiled and additional efforts are underway based upon initial screening findings.

"The columnar-equiaxed transition (CET) has been studied numerically under unsteady-state conditions using mathematical models that: (i) include a non-equilibrium undercooling at the columnar front;and(ii) describe the simultaneous evolution of the columnar and equiaxed zones.The results are discussed and compared with those produced by a steady-state analysis.IntroductionThe majority of the previous work on the columnar-equiaxed transition (CET) has concentrated on the production of equiaxed nuclei, regarding this as being the critical step in the formation of an equiaxed zone. Recently, the growth of equiaxed grains has been considered and this is not unreasonable because, for an equiaxed zone to be present, the grains must grow as well as nucleate. Since the growth rate of the grains will be determined by the thermal environment at and ahead of the columnar tips, it was decided to model the liberation and flow of heat during solidification to discover whether the various trends in the columnar range might be explained by their effect on the temperature profile throughout the casting. The models presented here for the solidification of a casting are the first to include the latent heat liberated ahead of the columnar front. Burden and Hunt (1) consider its effect only qualitatively, and although Lipton et al (2) adopt a criterion for the CET which is based on the thermal interaction of the columnar and equiaxed grains, they do not actually include the latent heat in their calculations.It can be argued that the latent heat liberated by the equiaxed grains in the bulk will retard the columnar dendrites in a casting: once the equiaxed grains are sufficiently well-established, the latent heat that they evolve could slow down the columnar growth to such an extent that the equi axed would dominate. Alternatively, the latent heat produced by the equiaxed grains might suppress further equiaxed solidification by raising the bulk temperature. The nature of the thermal interaction between columnar and equiaxed growth is not obvious, and because it is dependent on the material parameters and the dimensions of the system, it cannot be considered effectively in a qualitative way but has to be studied quantitatively: hence the need for the mathematical models discussed in the following pages. The results of the models are discussed in the light of a steady state analysis."

Many times, the maintenance professionals have been involved in changes to processes or systems. Often they rely on seat of the pants knowledge to determine whether or not they were successful. More often than not, once our attention has been turned to other endeavors, the initiative has floundered. This paper will describe those measures that can be most effectively used to track and manage the success of implementing an improved Work Management System. However, not only will the paper discuss traditional work indicators, it will also explain how to establish the behaviors in the work place that will ultimately ensure successful implementation. Combined with the discussion on indicators will be a discussion on how to tie them to bottom line results and display them in the form of a scorecard. Actual results will be discussed.

Natural rubber/organophilic clay nanocomposites were prepared and characterized. A brown bentonite from Paraiba’s State, Brazil was modified with a sodium salt and treated with quaternary ammonium salt hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride. The clay in its natural state, after cation exchange with sodium and after organophilization was characterized by XRD, IR, SEM, thermal analysis. Nanocomposite samples were prepared containing 10 resin percent of organophilic clay. The vulcanized samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM. The nanocomposites obtained showed improvement in their mechanical properties in comparison with samples without clay.

The off gas from the #5 converter at BHP Copper's San Manuel smelter was analyzed continuously over a period of several weeks using an online sulfur dioxide analyzer. These data have shown that the oxygen utilization efficiency of this copper converter was somewhat lower than anticipated, and that oxygen efficiency declines significantly during the copper blow. A sharp reduction in sulfur dioxide generation was consistently observed at the end of the copper blow, which could be used by converter operators to prevent over-blowing and minimize rolling out of stack.

Activated carbons owe their adsorption capacities to their extensively developed pore network structure. As a result, these adsorbents generally exhibit high specific surface areas. Currently, granular activated carbons produced from coconut shells are traditionally used for gold recovery by adsorption from cyanide leaching solutions. Magnetic activated carbons (MACs) for gold recovery from cyanide solutions produced from sources other than coconut shells have been developed at the University of Utah by mixing a magnetic precursor with a carbon source, and treating the mixture under controlled conditions of temperature and gas phase composition. The pore size distribution of the activated carbons is dependent on the degree of activation, among other factors. The significance of the MAC pore size distribution on gold adsorption kinetics and gold adsorption capacity is presented.

Over 25 years of US research in Mineral Recovery from Geothermal Solutions have lead to few commercial applications. With the World Bank program in Kamchatka, Russia in September 2005 a step was taken to vitalize and coordinate the many efforts to advance economic mineral recovery systems worldwide. The US Department of Energy is helping to spur on the interest and research needed to realize the many benefits of extracting minerals from geothermal solutions. The excitement of recovery of minerals from geothermal brines has many positive angles. The economics of certain geothermal site is improved if a revenue is arrived from a sellable commodity with the geothermal power. The use of cleaner geothermal brines also improves the capable use of the brine before reinjection. We will review the history of Geothermal in the USA and the opportunities for recovery of different minerals and the markets for them.

However, India is rich in ores and mineral, but E-waste recycling is necessary due to the report of national and international studies, which cautioned on the generation, treatment and accumulation of e-waste in India. Current data indicate that the total domestic e-waste generation including imports is around 382979 MT, however waste available for recycling and actually recycled are 144143 MT and 19000 MT, respectively. In which recycling by non-formal and formal sector are 95% and 5%, respectively. On the other hand, India has developed expertise in handling verities of metallic wastes in an organized and safe manner. The development of individual process or combined processes for handling the e-waste is underway. Eco- friendly and energy-saving processes are necessary to comply with stringent environmental regulations. The paper includes the recent trend of e-waste generation, recycling process and its future prospects particularly in India.

It is generally recognized that the gold thiosulfate leaching system requires the presence of copper and ammonia in order for acceptable leaching kinetics to be observed. However, the presence of copper and ammonia complicate the chemistry of the system as thiosulfate is rapidly oxidized by oxygen under these conditions. In addition, the environmental impact of ammonia would need to be considered before the adoption of this system. This paper describes fundamental studies into the thiosulfate oxygen system. The two reagents for this system are thiosulfate and oxygen, and leaching is carried out at pH < 7. It will be shown using electrochemical techniques that both the reduction of oxygen and the oxidation of gold-to-gold thiosulfate are hindered. Thus, if leaching is to work under these conditions, then both half reactions need to be improved. The use of additives, such as thiourea and lead have been shown to dramatically improve the oxidation of gold and the reduction of oxygen respectively. The leaching of gold in the presence of such additives is discussed.

"Lead-containing wastes processed at the IMN’s Division in Legnica originate mainly from dry and wet dedusting installations of the technological lines for copper production. These are lead dusts and lead-zinc dusts characterised by the specific properties resulting from the chemical composition of the Polish copper concentrates. Besides lead, they contain many accompanying metals and impurities such as zinc, copper, sulfur, chlorine, potassium, sodium, and also bituminous substances. Processing of lead-containing dusts is conducted in the installations of rotary-rocking furnaces heated with gas-oxygen burners fitted with auxiliary systems for cleaning process gases and refining re-circulating dusts. The processing technology utilizes innovative process and technical solutions enabling disposal of lead-containing wastes from copper metallurgy and from non-ferrous metals industry according to the BAT recommendations and to the guidelines specified in integrated permission. In this paper, the main technological aspects of processing lead-containing dusts at the IMN’s Division in Legnica have been presented.IntroductionCrude lead is obtained in Polish lead metallurgy from various primary and secondary materials, such as Zn-Pb concentrates, lead-bearing dusts of copper metallurgy and battery scrap. In zinc smelter Miasteczko Slaskie S.A. crude lead is produced from sulfide and oxide Pb-Zn concentrates in ISP process. Orzel Bialy S.A. and Baterpol Ltd. produce crude lead in short rotary furnaces in the process of smelting products of mechanical battery scrap separation– desulfurised or not desulfurised paste and metallic fraction. KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. and IMN Divison in Legnica produce crude lead in rotary furnaces in the process of smelting of polymetallic dusts and slimes from copper production processes."

"The Tusc gold deposit is located along the Carlin Trend approximately 13 kilometers north of Carlin, Nevada and 2.5 kilometers northwest of the Gold Quarry mine. Tusc is one of several structurally controlled oxide gold deposits located along the Good Hope fault within the Maggie Creek subdistrict. Mining commenced in 1994 with an oxide reserve of780,000 troy ounces of gold at an average grade of 1.34 g/t Au. The Good Hope fault forms the southwestern edge of the Schroeder Mountain uplift (also known as the Carlin Window) and juxtaposes carbonate rocks of the Siluro-Devonian Roberts Mountains Formation against siliceous mudstone, siltstone, and silty limestone of the Devonian Rodeo Creek unit. Submicroscopic gold mineralization is disseminated in the Good Hope fault system and in fractured hanging wall carbonate rocks. Wallrock alteration includes silicification, deca!cification, sericitization, and late alunite replacement and veins. All Tusc ore is transported 2.5 kilometers to Gold Quarry for processing. Leach-grade ore (0.2 - 1.7 g/t gold) is placed on the oxide leach pads, and mill-grade ore(> 1.7 g/t gold) is processed through the CIL oxide mill. IntroductionThe Tusc gold deposit is located in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S. A, approximately 13 kilometers north of the town of Carlin and 2.5 kilometers northwest of the Gold Quarry mine (Fig. 1 ). Some of these hospitals is ISO 9000-14000 certified. "The present work investigated the influence of Fe+2 initial concentrations in the bioleaching of copper from printed circuit board using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR. Printed circuit boards were collected from obsolete computers and mechanically processed through size reduction followed by magnetic separation. The bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR were grown and adapted in presence of printed circuit boards. A shake flask study was carried out on the printed circuit boards samples (non-magnetic fraction) using a rotary shaker under the following fixed conditions (185 rpm, 30°C). The bioleaching efficiency was evaluated by comparison between the concentration in the initial sample and in the leached liquor, pH of the medium and concentration of ferrous iron produced. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (1CP-OES) was used to determine the metals concentration. The results showed that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR leached 63% copper from printed circuit boards using supplemented medium with Fe+2.IntroductionThe waste of electric and electronic equipment is generated by discarding of equipment such as obsolete computers and cell phones which is stimulated by the technology innovations and it has been growing each year. Because of the amount that has been accumulated it has become a prominent environmental problem but also can be a source of valuable materials, such precious and base metals [1,2] The printed circuit boards are found in almost all electric and electronic equipment being composed of polymers, ceramics and metals and can be an alternative source to recover base and precious metals. The precious metals are used in the printed circuit boards to protect against oxidation and base metals because of its conducting properties [3]. The heterogeneous composition of printed circuit board is a limiting factor in the recycling processes and the metals concentrations also range."

Thallium is more toxic to humans than mercury, cadmium, lead, copper or zinc. Its chemical behavior resembles the alkali metals (K, Rb, Cs). It occurs almost exclusively in natural waters the monovalent thallous cation. The solubilities of thallous compounds are relatively high so that monovalent thallium is readily transported through aqueous routes into the environment. The major sources of thallium are the base metal sulfides and precious metal bearing sulfides. Therefore, it is often present as a contaminant constituent in waters emanating from heavy metal sulfide bearing deposits. Thallium can be effectively removed from wastewater to <2 µg/L by reductive precipitation of thallium sulfide. Effective thallium sulfide precipitation requires a controlled solution potential/pH combination. The required potential can be effectively achieved by utilizing a particulate iron slurry or packed column environment. Experimental results will be presented and discussed.

This paper discusses briefly the major reasons associated with the growth and its impact on the energy requirement and Environmental imbalance. A projection based on the present global Alumina and Al requirement indicate a substantial further growth of at least 30% over the next 10 years. It is indicated that the main factors which are likely to influence investments are the environmental factors such as the Climate Change and global response to the growing energy prices and sustainable development. Each of the developed / developing nations must find response to the GHG emissions which will encourage the Al Industry to make an effective contribution to global warming while preserving the international competitiveness of the industry - a challenging task. The efforts shall concentrate on improving energy efficiency in the industry possibly of the order of 25% over the next 10 to 20 years. The developments in this line are discussed.

The solvent extraction for gold from alkaline cyanide solutions has been investigated using LIX 79 guanidine-based extractant. Different variables that could affect the extraction system were evaluated: equilibrium time, aqueous pH and extractant and modifier concentrations. The extraction isotherms of the aurocyanide complex with respect to other cyanoanions were compared and the following order of selectivity Au>Ag>Cu>Zn>>Fe was observed. From the pH isotherms it was found that aurocyanide can be extracted in alkaline media and a better separation with respect to other cyanoaniones was obtained in the range of 10.5 < pH < 11.2. Better selectivity was observed when using LIX 79 and tridecanol at 10% and 5% vol, respectively. Stripping gold from loaded organic was carried out at pH>12, using NaOH and NaCN solutions.
