Restricted fields of vision are a common problem with underground mining equipment. Also, when lighting systems are provided, they may be positioned where they cause glare. This restricts the visibility around the machines even further. To help address these problems, the US Bureau of Mines has developed a PC-based software package to aid in the analysis of certain human engineering aspects of mining equipment design. The software is available for use by equipment manufacturers and mining companies for design work on new machines, as well as for evaluating proposed modifications to existing machines.

Pre-concentration by sorting is as old as the mining industry. Inevitably waste rock is broken with ore. Separation may take place in the stopes by selective mucking and transport, or selective loading and transport of ore and waste by 12-cu, yd. shovels and 100-ton trucks in large open pit operations. Hand sorting of 1" to 16" pieces, formerly widely practiced at underground chutes and prior to or following first stage crushing, has greatly diminished in the United States with its high per hour labor cost, although still widely practiced in other countries and, surprisingly, in some of the most modern mills where inexpensive labor is available. The economics of pre-concentration by sorting is attractive since elimination of waste at any cost less than the total milling cost will show a profit. The size at which sorting should be under- taken is determined by the size at which liberation is secured to yield a product of ore and waste, and greatly influences cost and the point in the flowsheet where sorting can be undertaken. In some instances mining costs can be reduced where an inexpensive sorting system to eliminate waste is combined with a less selective and less costly mining method. This is particularly true in deep mines where hoisting capacity determines the rate of extraction and sorting is performed underground, with waste utilized for fill. Hand sorting, while efficient, is expensive because of low sorting rates. Peale (1) quotes man hour capacity at 1/3 ton per hour on sizes 3/4" to 3" copper ore, and up to 5 tons per hour on rich iron ore sized from 4" to 16".

Respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) is a complex mixture of carbonaceous and mineral particles with a variation in size and shape. Accumulation of RCMD in the lungs of underground coal miners results in severe respiratory damage and ultimately progressive pneumoconiosis known as the black lung disease. The occurrence of the black lung disease dropped to a low of 2.1% in 1990s but has increased to 3.1% in 2000s [1], prompting more research on coal mine dust mitigation. In addition to surveying the impact of new mining technologies on the size of generated dust and exposure measurement, a comprehensive characterization of physico-chemical properties of RCMD particles are essential for a better understanding of the adverse health effects of coal mine dust. Such vital factors include particle size, surface charge, morphology, composition, and agglomeration state. The respirable fraction of RCMD, has been designated as particles < 10 μm in diameter, and almost all studies on the RCMD toxicity have focused on micron-sized particles. However, recent toxicological studies have shown that nanoparticles (particles with one dimension less than 100 nm) can have a magnified toxicity compared to the larger particles with the same chemistry [2]. Nanoparticles have a much higher specific surface area compared to the same mass of larger particles and are thus more reactive. Most micron-size particles can be cleared by the body’s defense mechanism. However, inhaled nanoparticles can easily deposit in all regions of the respiratory tract and can translocate to vital organs. [2].

Placer material, regardless of the value of gold, tin, titanium, diamonds or other value mineral it contains, remains worthless until the valuable constituent is separated from the bulk of the material. This separation is no mean task when considering that a gold placer containing 0.01 to 0.03 oz/yd3 of gold, which is the range of grade of typical placer deposits; yes, 1:3,000,000! It is a miracle that gold placer mining has ever been profitable. Added to the situation of minute quantities of gold are several other problems, such as the gold often being very finely divided, the association of boulders and clay, and running and/or ground water. As each placer deposit is individual and distinctive, many factors have to be considered in planning the method for gold recovery from the alluvial deposit. Previous chapters have shown that in the exploration and sampling stage, some knowledge of the amount of each size of coarse and fine material which occurs in the deposit as well as the size distribution of the discrete gold particles is determined. Unless informed to the contrary, as a general rule of thumb, plant designers will consider that 40 percent of the material will pass through a 5/8-inch screen or punched plate hole. Coal waste materials inhibit the direct establishment of vegetation due to adverse physical and chemical properties, particularly low water retention and high potential acidity. The Moss #1 coal refuse pile is located in Dickenson County, Virginia, and was idled in the late 1980s with little topsoil resources available for final closure. The refuse was acidic (Total S = 0.38%; pH = 3.6), black in color and high (70%) in coarse fragments. The refuse also had a low water-holding capacity (4.5% in < 2.0-mm fraction). A small plot experiment was established on the refuse pile to evaluate the effects of liming rates (50% and 100% of lime requirements) and topsoil thickness (15, 30 and 60 cm) on vegetative growth and leachate quality. Liming and topsoil amendment increased the surface soil pH from <4.0 to >6.0 over a two-year period, which resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than the control plots. All topsoil treatments resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than plots treated with lime only. This was due to improved surface soil physical and chemical properties. A topsoil treatment of 60 cm gave the thickest vegetative cover and biomass yield. Such a treatment, however, would be cost-prohibitive at this location. Applica¬tion of 27Mg ha`1 of lime to the refuse surface along with 15 cm of topsoil produced acceptable two-year vegetative cover and biomass, and this appeared to be the optimal treatment for this particular situation. Both liming and topsoil had no affect on leachate pH and the electrical conductivity of leachates collected below the plots. This suggests that surface revegetation will have little effect on the quality of water draining through the pile. Therefore, long-term water-treatment requirements may not be reduced by successfully revegetating the pile surface.

A new method for interpolating a block model is proposed, where both the diamond drill holes (DHs) and blast holes (BHs) data are used. Combining these data types poses a geostatistical "class size" problem due to the different statistical properties of the densely populated BHs and the sparsely populated DH data. This paper discusses how linear regression was used to adjust the DH values prior to the interpolation to account for the "class size" problem which is inherent to the procedure. The correlation between the BHs and the DHs is found. The DHs are then corrected based on the regression line. Each block that falls within a certain range of influence of a blast hole is assigned a different code and is interpolated with the combined BH and regressed DH data set. Blocks that fall outside the range of blast hole influence are interpolated using the original DH data set. A comparison against other methods, indicate a 12% improvement over using DHs only and a 2% improvement over using BHs only.

This report is a review of current research being conducted in the United States which is intended to increase the utilization of coal ash. In order that this report be as timely as possible, the majority of information was obtained by direct comunication with the people listed in the references. Due to the magnitude of the flyash research program, some projects may be inadvertently omitted. Field research on flyash for use as an agricultural fertilizer is being monitored at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.1 This research is directed at determining the plant nutrients that are available in flyash as well as the quantities of flyash that can be applied to agricultural soil without adversely affecting plant growth, Coal mine spoil and refuse bank reclamation with power plant flyash is being demonstrated by United States Bureau of Mines, Morgantown, West Virginia.2 Numerous highly visible coal refuse piles and strip mine spoil banks contribute to air, water, and land environmental problems. Revegetation of several experimental sites with flyash from bituminous coal-fired power plants was undertaken in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Conventional farm equipment was used at some of the sites while large earthmovers were required at others. The flyash served as a neutralizing agent, dilutent, and soil amendment to provide some nutrients which enhanced vegetation of the barren areas, Estimated cost of reclamation by this method is $300.00 per acre of previously leveled area. This figure can vary considerably depending upon the topography of the site, haul distance, quality of the soil and quality of flyash.

Today the world looks on longwall in the hope that it can produce the next really big break through in productivity, Three correlated machinery developments have made this possible, but it is not only the machinery developments, interesting though these be in themselves, but together with developments in control systems of these machines that longwall now looks so much more attractive, The machinery concerned is, of courses:- 1. The Anderton Shearer Loader - A miner that takes a narrow strip off the, face at rates acceptable to modern mining engineers. 2. An Armoured Flexible, Conveyor which can be kept in close contact with the face and still convey coal as it is snaked over to the faces 3. Powered support systems which can be mechanised and controlled with reliability at any distance from the individual support itself.

Two types of hydrothermal massive sulfide fields were discovered in the Mid-Atlantic ridge (MAR) in the last twenty years. The first type associates with basalts and includes the TAG, Snakepit, Broken Spur, Lucky Strike and Krasnov hydrothermal fields. The second type is related to ultramafic rocks and represented by the Logatchev, Rainbow and Ashadze hydrothermal fields. In 2007 a new, probably, the largest cluster of hydrothermal massive sulfide field on the MAR (Fig. 1), related both to basaltic and ultramafic rocks, was discovered at 13°31&apos;N of the MAR (Beltenev et al., 2007). This paper presents the results of 18 high-G centrifuge tests performed at the Electric Power Research Institute&apos;s Coal Cleaning Test Facility in January 1985. These tests, using -28 mesh (0.6mm) froth flotation product, show that the high-G, solid-bowl centrifuge can produce clean-coal moistures of less than 12 percent at solids recovery rates exceeding 98 percent. The high-G centrifuge achieved these low moistures by applying centrifugal forces up to 2,000 times gravity. Because these forces are two to three times the forces used in a screen-bowl centrifuge, the high-G centrifuge can use a solid bowl and still produce a low-moisture product. The solid bowl captures ultrafines that would pass through a screen bowl, and thus obtains higher recovery rates than a screen-bowl centrifuge.

Wireless technologies are becoming vitally important for modern mining operations. Used for increasingly complex tasks — such as miner and asset tracking, proximity detection, teleremote and autonomous equipment operation, and environmental monitoring — the ability of wireless systems to perform their intended functions satisfactorily in the presence of other wireless systems (coexist) is critical not only to the successful operation of modern mines but also to the safety and health of mine workers. Concerns regarding the ability of wireless systems to coexist can often hinder the decisionmaking process for adopting technologically advanced wireless systems. However, with adequate knowledge of the concepts of coexistence and appropriate wireless system management, coexistence concerns do not need to be an impediment to the successful adoption of wireless systems. There are several common wireless coexistence-related fears that can inhibit adoption of wireless technology: fears that safety-related systems may not operate properly when needed, failures could disrupt production, and wireless systems may inherently require costly troubleshooting. Most of these fears can be alleviated through proactive activities.

Underclays are associated with coals found in eastern Oklahoma. These coals are of bituminous rank and are in beds of Middle and Late Pennsylvanian age. They occur in an area of about 8,000 mi2, within the southern part of the Western Interior Coal Region. The rocks of the area consist of a thick series of sandstones, shales, underclays, coals, and limestones. There are more than 40 beds of bituminous coal in the state, but only 12 of these have been mined over large areas. The 12 are, from oldest to youngest: the lower Hartshorne, upper Hartshorne, McAlester (Stigler), upper McAlester, Cavanal, Rowe, Secor, Weir-Pittsburg, Mineral, Croweburg, Iron Post, and Dawson coals. None of the underclay associated with these coal beds is known to have been exploited commercially. Nine samples of underclay from beneath the Croweburg coal were collected over a wide area in the eastern Oklahoma coal field for evaluation. The underclays are usually shades of gray with brown or orange iron-oxide staining. Although soft and plastic in some places, they are generally hard and slickensided, and contain abundant carbonized plant fragments. Bulk chemical analyses, clay mineral identification, and ceramic tests were performed on each underclay sample. The dominant clay minerals are illite and kaolinite with some mixed-layer clays. Silica (Si02) ranges from 45.96% to 59.03% and alumina (Al2O3) varies from 14.98% to 23.60%. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Tuscaloosa Re- search Center conducted the ceramic evaluations. Samples were slow fired from 1,000°C to 1,250°C in 50°C intervals. Bulk density, color, percent linear shrinkage, and percent absorption were determined for each slow fire test. All Croweburg underclay samples are best suited for building brick.

"Diesel particulate Matter (DPM) is a byproduct of fuel combustion in diesel engines. It is classified as a carcinogen, with associated respiratory and cardiovascular health effects. The composition, size, and concentration of DPM is dependent on factors such as engine type, loading and fuel composition. Though a number of DPM abatement and control strategies currently exist, particularly in underground mining environments, occupational exposures remain a serious health concern. As a novel abatement approach, DPM scavenging by fine water or “fog” droplets has been proposed and a laboratory set-up has been built to test the efficacy on engine exhaust. Here, we describe a series of tests that varied engine load, system flow rate and fog drop number density. While none of these factors had overwhelming effects on the results within the ranges tested, the improvement in DPM mass removal attributed to the fog treatment was about 45% on average in comparison to no treatment. INTRODUCTION Diesel engines have seen widespread use for well over a century due to their relatively high thermal efficiency and fuel economy1. More recently, however, adverse health risks of diesel exhaust have become increasingly clear. Many of these risks are associated with the physical and chemical properties of exhaust components1–3. The term diesel particulate matter (DPM) is used to refer to the solid components of diesel exhaust, which are a mixture of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC) and minor constituents including sulfates and metal ash3. The OC fraction of DPM results from unburned fuel and lube oil, whereas EC or soot is formed during the combustion of locally rich regions within the fuel. DPM is classified as a carcinogen6,7 and epidemiological studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between long-term exposure to DPM and other combustion-related fine particulate and increased cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases8,9. Diesel engines operate in relative fuel rich/oxygen lean conditions and are characterized by relatively high emissions of particulate as compared to spark-ignition engines2,3,10. Typically, these emissions range from 107 – 109 particles/cc and cover two primary size ranges: the nuclei mode where particles have diameters less than about <50 nm, and the accumulation mode where diameters are from about 50-10,000 nm. Most OC resides in the nuclei mode as semi-volatile compounds, while most EC is in the accumulation mode3. The physical and chemical properties of DPM vary with the type of engine, fuel (e.g., petro- vs. bio-diesel) and operating conditions such as loading (i.e., a function of torque and rotational speed)2,3,9,11,12. Loading is a particularly important factor with respect to DPM toxicity9,13,14, and on the effectiveness of after-treatment technologies2,3,15. Engine load alone can affect the EC/OC ratio, and the size distribution and number density of DPM. For diesel engines, the load is roughly proportional to the equivalence ratio3, defined as the actual fuel/air ratio over the stoichiometric fuel/air ratio for complete combustion. Light loads generally favor the formation of OC and small particles. As load is increased the volatiles are oxidized leading to larger soot particles (i.e., EC), but lower total number density of DPM. With further loading, the formation of soot offsets the decrease in volatiles, resulting in increased DPM mean size and number density3."

Automation of mining increases the productivity of labor, thereby reducing the unit cost of labor. Such cost constitutes the largest portion of the direct or variable costs of producing coal. Therefore, any increase in productivity directly reduces variable cost. The large investment in mechanical equipment carries with it the burden of increased fixed charges. As the proportion of fixed cost to the total cost increases, the effects on the cost of production changes are amplified. Therefore, equipment must be fully utilized at all times. Averaged fixed costs rise with any decline in production. Such a situation forces coal companies to seek every means of main¬taining full production. Figure I will reflect the story on the relationship of production to cost.

Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) have been used in mining in decades past, but their use has been limited and sporadic. This has changed in recent years, with TBMs being used at Stillwater Mine, Grosvenor Coal Mine Slopes, Sirius Minerals potash mine, and more. These machines are all full face, circular TBMs—a design that has thus far have been unable to tackle a larger issue for mines: typically a flat floor is needed for mining vehicles to traverse. A novel type of non-circular boring machine is now answering the need to quickly reach underground ore bodies while cutting a rectangular profile in hard rock. This cross section allows for use of typical mine trucks and other rubber-tired mine vehicles. The machine uses disc cutters to cut the rock, and has a support structure similar to an open type TBM; however, the cutting geometry is entirely different. The machine is currently cutting an access tunnel at a silver mine. This paper reviews the design and operation of the novel noncircular tunnel boring machine, and describes possible future adaptations to provide safe, sustainable mine development.

The Pocahontas Coal Field consists of eight mineable seams of low-volatile coal in southern West Virginia and Virginia. The deeper seams, especially the Pocahontas No. 3 and No.4 Seams, under heavy cover and below drainage are notoriously gassy. Methane in the Pocahontas Field is generally thought of as being confined in the coal itself, rather than in mud slips or clay veins. Furthermore, it is characteristic of Pocahontas coal to retain its gas until the coal is broken and removed from the solid. Because of this inability for gas to escape from unmined coal, entries developed around large blocks are seldom of significant value in bleeding off methane before pillar extraction begins. This is evidenced by the fact that it is not uncommon to find gas liberated during the mining of chain pillars and barriers which have been developed for several years. The Pocahontas Fuel Company develops almost all solid coal by conventional methods with shuttle car haulage. To provide the maximum productive capacity without compromising ventilation and safety requirements, the Company has adopted standards for ventilating 5, 6 and 7-entry sections.

Although Disputes Review Boards have been used for some time, they had not received wide publicity at the time Monroe County first used one. Public owners frequently resist adopting new contracting practices. This paper discusses an owner&apos;s experience with Dispute Review Boards, from learning about them to their use on two (2) projects. The experiences of potential and actual contractor claims are compared to a claim on an earlier contract and the ensuing litigation. Suggestions for possible use for Owner-Engineer disputes and recommendations for use are provided.
