Meldon Quarry is a seemingly rare occurrence of acid rock drainage (ARD) in a quarrying operation.4 With surface waters discharging to a tributary of a salmon-bearing river, it is subject to stringent discharge conditions. The quarry predates effective environmental management, and preventative, control and treatment measures were not implemented until relatively recently. However, retrospectively implementing standard preventative approaches at the site is costly, technically difficult and of uncertain benefit. This paper overviews the recent site history and introduces data from a demonstration by KEECO (UK) Limited of its Silica Micro Encapsulation (SME) water treatment technology.

Determining whether a railroad locomotive will skid under varying conditions is a fairly routine, pervasive problem. However, some of the equations provided are wrong, others are at best murky. All require correction or clarification. Skidding during heavy braking is a crucial safety problem, possibly resulting in loss of control and collision. It can also be an economic detriment, ruining wheels and tracks and, by inhibiting acceleration, causing reduced full-speed times. While skidding is less likely for rubber-tired equipment, a comparable problem exists for tractor-trailers operating on poor surfaces. The primary reference is to the SME Mining Engineering Handbook (pp. 14-11, Eqs. 7 and 8), which is taken as authoritative and normative (Brantner, 1973). Fundamentally, the physical weight of the locomotive can never be negative (-). However, based on this reference it can be negative on adverse grades, during braking (Eq. 7), and on favorable grades, whether accelerating or braking (Eq. 8). Additionally, it should be noted that the term rW should be Rw. To avoid having the locomotive weight turn out negative, "absolute value" brackets must enclose the right-hand expression of both equations. Also, the weight of locomotive can be greater than the right-hand side value introducing the common "greater than or equal to" symbol (>_). More details on Henkel's gold recovery technology and Mintek's role in this programme are given in (1). an The application of ion exchange resins to gold recovery is not new and many reviews have been published on the advantages of this process, and on the current state of the art of gold recovery by ion exchange resins. (2)(3)(4) Widespread application of ion exchange resin based processes for gold recovery has, however, not occurred to date. Fleming and Cromberge (5), described some significant pilot plant RIP trials in South Africa and the partial success of these pilot plant trials held out the tantalising possibility of a breakthrough in gold recovery based on RIP technology. Despite this pioneering work, only two really significant applications of RIP technology for gold recovery exist today. These are the Golden Jubilee Plant in the Eastern Transvaal South Africa and the widespread, although in some respects technically backward, use of ion exchange for gold recovery in the former USSR. There are two main reasons for the current scarcity of RIP and RIS plants used for gold recovery. These are: 1. 2. The perceived problems of engineering RIP plants The lack of a resin having suitable chemistry for both gold loading and gold elution The problems of engineering RIP plants have been largely overcome in the last 25 years. Much of the development in RIP plant design took place in the uranium industry during the rapid expansion of that industry in the mid 1970's. In addition, the development of CIP engineering systems has lead to the development of in-pulp solid extractant based metallurgical plant designs which can, with limited modification, be adopted to RIP. The lack of a resin having suitable chemical properties has almost certainly been the main reason for RIP/RIS not being introduced into the gold industry over the past decade. Asarco has been using computer-aided open-pit mine design since 1966. The in-house developed program package includes drill-hole analysis programs, interpolation routines, and three-dimensional open-pit design programs. The financial analysis step after pit design required that a reasonably accurate schedule be produced so that a good cash flow model could assess the feasibility of a project. The manual method of scheduling was too time-consuming for feasibility work, so a computerized scheduler was required. Since no computerized mine scheduling programs existed, we requested proposals from consulting firms to develop such a program. The selection of a consulting firm, the formulation of the contract and design specifications required about three years to accomplish. The consulting firm, Systems Control Inc. (SCI), of Palo Alto, spent over one year doing the programming and testing alone. The details of the program development were reported in "Computerized Year-by-Year Open-Pit Mine Scheduling," SME-AIME Transactions, December 1974. In June of 1973 the program, which SCI dubbed Optimum Resource Extraction or ORE, was installed. Version 1 of ORE was utilized successfully on three separate properties over a period of two years. During this time it became obvious that some of the original design specifications were restrictive, and certain modifications were required. The ORE program was submitted for modification, and after one year version 2 was operational in May of 1976. The program now consists of approximately 20,000 lines of FORTRAN source statements grouped into 190 subprograms, and runs in a 450K region of Asarco's 370/148 in Cranford, NJ. The Tucson com¬puter (370/115) is tied to the Cranford computer via a 9600 baud leased T.P. line, for running mine scheduling and other large mine planning programs.

INTRODUCTION Denmark is a small country with a population of about 5.5 million in the north of Europe. A substantial part of Denmark consists of islands, and the Danes have been familiar with ferry links between their islands for ages. However, their wish for fixed links has resulted in the con¬struction of bridges between most of Denmark's islands in this century. (Fig. 1) A fixed link across the Store Belt or Great Belt, Denmark's most important waterway bet¬ween the island of Fyn and main island of Sjaelland, on which the capital of Copenhagen is situated, has remained to be constructed hitherto. In 1987, the Danish government decided that the Great Belt should be crossed by a fixed link, incorporating a two-track railway line and four-lane motorway. The Storebaelt Forbindelsen AS, a joint stock company in the sole ownership of the Dan¬ish state, has been established for the purpose of planning, constructing and operating the Great Belt Link. The company will refinance the construction project by charging toll to the motorway users and fees to the state railway. Here it should be mentioned that Denmark and Sweden are about to jointly realize the fixed rail and road link across the Øresund or The Sound between Denmark and Sweden on the basis of the realization model of the Great Belt link. At present, the project is at the com¬petitive tendering or contract awarding stage. In the near future, also the third fixed link of comparable extent, that is the crossing of the Fehmarn Belt between Denmark and Germany, will go into the decisive projecting stage prob¬ably in conformity with the aforementioned pattern. Going back to the Great Belt, it should be noted that this fixed link involves three exten¬sive sections and has been under construction since December 1988.

The current processes that aim to purify molybdenite concentrates are not able to dissolve some copper compounds, hence limiting the processes. Typically, the copper content results are from 2 up to 4 weight percent in the last concentrate. Such values are still too high for the molybdenite concentrate to be further processed to molybdenum trioxide by roasting. In order to achieve lower levels of copper — but also avoid excessive molybdenite losses — a continuous sulfation-leaching process is investigated and applied successfully on a pilot scale. Additionally, a reactor prototype and its process parameters are proposed for a commercial plant.

The Bureau of Mines has developed PC-based tomographic computer programs for geophysical applications, and is making them available to potential users as part of a Bureau plan to facilitate the transfer of technology to industry. These programs were initially developed for predicting and monitoring the flow pattern of leach solution during in situ mining. Seismic crosshole tomography has located fractured zones of low seismic velocity and saturated zones of high seismic velocit above the natural water table. The Bureau has applied tomography also to assessing high-wall blast damage, and examining the integrity of mine-related geological structures. The tomographic programs include the straight ray pro ram BOMTOM (Bureau of Mines Tomography? and the program BOMCRATR (Bureau of Mines Curved Ray Tomographic Reconstruction) that can be run with either curved or straight rays. Both programs provide optional mathematical constraints to help counteract the nonuniqueness of reconstructions that occurs with crosshole data. They are available from the Bureau free of charge. With typical data sets, they can be run on a 386 microcomputer with 640 Kb RAM. BOMTOM was described in the Bureau Report of Investigations 9159, so this report emphasizes BOMCRATR. Curved and straight ray reconstructions using seismic field data collected while simulating injection of leach solution were compared. The curved and straight ray tomograms were quite similar even with velocity variations of more than 50 percent.

"INTRODUCTIONCrossrail will provide London and the South East of England with a world class, high-capacity railway to ease congestion on London’s public transport system and enable better access between business, residential and entertainment districts. At the heart of this £14.8bn scheme lies Farringdon Station, which will form a major interchange between Crossrail, Thameslink and London Underground. The £400m Farringdon Crossrail station was awarded to a joint venture of BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK) in 2011, and comprises two ticket halls, two platform tunnels and a multitude of connecting tunnels all constructed using open face sprayed concrete linings (SCL). BFK appointed Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP) as their specialist SCL designer. As the main contractor for both C300/C410, the Western Running Tunnels and Station Caverns, and also for C435 Farringdon Station, BFK were in a unique position to develop strategies to reduce cost, time and risk for the Client. One such innovation involved the continuation of the TBM drives for the running tunnels right through the length of the new Farringdon platform caverns. This created large diameter precast concrete pilot tunnels for the subsequent platform enlargement using SCL. The benefits of such an approach are described in detail by St.John et al 2015. BFK also introduced another alternative strategy to reduce cost, time and risk, by proposing to abandon the TBMs in the ground (“Turn & Bury”) permanently rather than recovering them through the ticket hall shafts. This de-risked the programme, enabling critical ticket hall construction to proceed unhindered. However, one consequence of this revised strategy was an area of increased underground congestion, with two SCL tunnels (RTE2 and ES2) and a bored tunnel (complete with abandoned TBM) in close proximity to a ticket hall excavation (see Figure 1) and a sensitive, listed railway structure. Faced with this complex geometry, and combined with challenging geotechnical conditions (Gakis et al 2015), the team chose to install enhanced monitoring to study the behavior of tunnel RTE2 and provide additional assurance that the tunnels were performing as predicted. Applying advanced 3D numerical modelling and taking into account the residual tensile strength of the SCL helped avoid unnecessary reinforcement installation in primary lining and/or early installation of a secondary lining in RTE2 prior to ES2 construction."

Twin 8.5 m diameter, 10 km long headrace tunnels under overburdens of up to 1870 m were excavated for the neelum jhelum hydroelectric project in north-eastern pakistan using two main beam gripper tunnel boring machines (tbms). Rock bursts were encountered and presented a significant danger to personnel and equipment. Micro seismic monitoring was installed to analyze rock burst characteristics and to create a database for future reference. Correlation of rock burst characteristics improved the ability to predict the likelihood, location, severity, and number of rock burst events. The proper selection of roof supports is based, before everything else, on a thorough knowledge of the roof rock strength, especially tensile strength. This parameter is a vital factor in the delamination of roof rocks and eventual cave-in. It is also important to know the properties of the floor on which the roof supports are set. While driving galleries, it is essential to know beforehand the strength of rocks that will be encountered in the near future during the work. "Millennials. Doesn’t the word just make your blood boil? You’ve probably encountered one of those kids who think they know best despite a lack of any real experience.Hi, my name is Erica, and I am a Millennial. We often get a bad rap, sometimes for good reason. But we do have qualities that are often overlooked. For example, I am happy to share with my generation a real desire to make a difference in the world and a commitment to innovation. Does this mean I think we always have good ideas? No – especially not right away. After all, few of us came anywhere near a piece of construction equipment until arriving for our first job, as was the case for me. We may have fancy degrees, but not many of us learned to run a jackleg drill in school.Two weeks after graduating college in 2011, I packed up my bags and moved to New York City to work as a field engineer for Traylor Bros. Inc. on the Queens Bored Tunnels project (Granite/Traylor /Frontier Kemper, JV), part of NYC MTA’s multi-billion dollar Long Island Railroad East Side Access project. It was here I became acquainted with the notorious New York City union workers. Perhaps the greatest challenge of my career thus far was earning the respect of the field supervision and craft workers on this first project.The first time I asked a maintenance mechanic to clean a piece of equipment in accordance with our maintenance protocol I got a flat-out “No.” It was the most powerless I had ever felt. But why should these experienced workers trust a 21-year-old girl with her civil engineering degree and no prior experience? I realized no employee on the job had any reason to listen to me — not until I proved my worth. Fortunately, I arrived on the job site just as we were commissioning the slurry plant for the first tunnel drive. I dove into learning as much about the slurry tunneling process as possible and was able to quickly pick up the ins and outs of running the slurry separation plant. As none of the other engineers or management had first-hand experience on a slurry tunneling job, I soon became the go-to engineer in the slurry plant. No one questioned me if I asked to have something done around the plant after that, or if they did, they quickly learned that I had a convincing answer as to the need for the task. I was even able to play a large role in shaping our slurry monitoring and control methodology."

The service hoisting plant in the mining transportation is an installation serving for the vertical transport of material and persons. An adequate mathematical model is presented for simple evaluation of the project parameters where different plant designs and the ways of transport are take into consideration. The technical and economical optimization procedure is added to the basic mathematical model of the project. This approach enables on one hand the optimization of the reconstruction of the multi-purpose hoisting plants in order to suppress possible bottle necks, while on the other hand it enables the determination of such values of the parameters of the choice and of the operation that the sum of total expenses per a transport unit' becomes the lowest. The optimization procedure is designed in such a way that all numerical data of the optimum hoisting plant are printed out together with the graphical representation of dependencies of the fundamental parameters in broader optimization region.

Introduction Americans have long been proud of their ability to recognize a need, define it, and then develop workable solutions. The U.S. underground coal conversion (UCC) program is a good example. In 1974, the need to utilize coal resources that could not be mined was recognized, and Congress gave the Bureau of Mines $1.7 million to gain a better understanding of the UCC technology and its potential applications. Since 1977 when the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) was formed, workable technologies have been tested, the market for underground coal conversion has been recognized, and extensive industrial interest has developed. Perspective The U.S. is blessed with extensive coal resources. Coal supplies about 19% of our national energy needs, yet recently promulgated environmental standards and increasing mining costs have limited direct coal use. UCC potentially can use coal that is economically or technically infeasible to mine because the coal is too thick, deep, dirty, high-ash, and wet; has an excessive angle of dip; or has unpredictable and poor over-burden characteristics that make mining unsafe. Coal can be gasified underground or perhaps liquefied below the earth's surface. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is the prime element of the underground coal conversion program. It enables coal to be converted to gas underground. UCC Coal Resource Recent data show a total U.S. coal resource base of about 6.4 trillion tons. Of this, 1.8 trillion tons might be accessed by UCC, including some minable coal. A commercial UCC process could quadruple roughly the 450 billion tons of U.S. coal reserves, which presently are recoverable by mining. The U.S. coal resources are divided into five sectors. The two most eastern sectors contain relatively thin, swelling bituminous coals that are difficult to gasify. Of the two, the bituminous coal in the Eastern Province is the most difficult because it is deeper than in the Interior Province and the terrain is more rugged. The sector along the Rocky Mountains contains huge amounts of thick low-rank coals that are the most promising for early development by UCC. The coal has good continuity and the terrain is suitable. A review of the literature reveals that methods for simulating the coupled behavior of size reduction and liberation are limited to binary mineral systems containing one composite particle class. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of a mathematical model to simulate such behavior for binary and ternary systems containing multiple classes of composite particles. A modified Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and a finite difference Jacobian are used in conjunction with the developed model and a set of constrained equations to estimate all kinetic parameters. This estimation scheme is validated for a binary ore (sphalerite-dolomite) with five composite particle classes using experimental data.

There are many risks associated with the storage of nuclear or other toxic wastes. One of the major risks is the escape of material from the repository. No matter how well a storage facility is engineered, the potential escape of dangerous material must be studied. This kind of study will include some estimation of the "travel path" of the particles. The travel path of a radio-nuclide particle will depend on the geological and hydrological parameters of the surrounding rocks. These parameters must be estimated from a limited number of samples available within the study area. Any estimation will -of necessity -contain a certain amount of uncertainty or "estimation error". This uncertainty will be carried through to the analysis of potential movement of particles, so that the estimated travel path itself will be subject to some error. This paper discusses an approach which may lead to a quantification of the uncertainty on the predicted travel path.

Recruitment and activation of phagocytic cells after inhalation of occupational dusts has been implicated in the development of pulmonary inflammation, fibrosis, or emphysema. Plateletactivating factor has been described recently as a potent inflammatory agent. The objective of the present study was to investigate if platelet-activating factor might play a role in the inflammatory response of the lung to occupational dusts. In vitro exposure of alveolar macrophages to cotton dust (4 mg/ml), silica (10 mg/ml), or coal dust (10 mg/ml) results in the release of picomole levels of platelet-activating factor with a potency of cotton dust > silica > coal dust. Time course studies indicate that platelet-activating factor release from alveolar macrophages is maximal approximately 10 minutes after in vitro exposure to silica. In vitro, platelet-activating factor is a direct stimulant of polymorphonuclear leukocytes increasing chemiluminescence 2.3 ± 0.3 fold above control. The maximal response occurs in the dose range of 10-10 to 10-7M platelet activating factor. In addition, plateletactivating factor potentiates the response of polymorphonuclear leukocytes to a second stimulant; i.e., chemiluminescence generated from polymorphonuclear leukocytes exposed to plateletactivating factor (10-9M) plus chemotactic peptide (FMLP, 10-9M) is 88 ± 22% greater than the sum of the separate effects of these stimulants. In contrast, platelet-activating factor is not a direct stimulant of alveolar macrophages in vitro, having no stimulatory effect on chemiluminescence or superoxide anion release even at levels of 10-6 to 10-5M platelet-activating factor. However, platelet-activating factor (10-5M) does potentiate zymosan-stimulated activation of chemiluminescence and superoxide release from alveolar macrophages by 117 ± 56% and 30 ± 4%, respectively. In conclusion, these data indicate that exposure of the lung to occupational dusts results in the release of platelet-activating factor which may activate polymorphonuclear leukocytes and potentiate the responsiveness of alveolar macrophages to dust. The net result would be pulmonary inflammation and hypersecretion of reactive species by pulmonary phagocytes which could lead to tissue damage and pulmonary disease.
