INTRODUCTION The demand for tunnelling can be related to urban population size and density; often, tunnelling occurs when a certain city size and density threshold is reached, and increases thereafter as a function of those population characteristics. Subways for rail mass transit are the most notable example, of course, but tunnels for water supply and perhaps for sewerage can also be related to size and density. As cities grow large they sometimes outgrow their local water supply and have to import water from distant places via tunnels; witness New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. And it has been suggested that Chicago use deep tunnels for storm water storage because tertiary treatment to meet water quality standards will require treating storm water runoff.(1) Other uses of underground space also increase with urban density, e.g., underground parking, concourses and shopping centers such as Rockefeller Center in New York City and the Place Ville-Marie in Montreal. These examples can be viewed as illustrative of the central point of urban land economics. As the number of people locating in a place increase, they bid up land values and make the more intensive use of land economic, with land defined to embrace the space both above and below the surface. Hence, we are led to think about the city, and of urban land use, in three dimensions. Once exploration is complete, "winning" of the ore can be viewed as fundamentally a bulk handling proposition. Whether it is to strip, break, size, extract, load, haul, or even process, the success of each of these phases will depend upon how effectively one can utilize-the methods and tools that are available in bulk handling. Since as much as 30 to 60% of the total delivered price of raw materials can be attributed to handling and shipping (ref. 1), this expenditure may spell the success or failure of an entire mining venture. In fact, it has become increasingly evident that handling and shipping are so intimately associated with mining that only when they are duly considered throughout the mine-to -smelter master plan as an integral part of a total system can an optimum operation be expected and the most economical ton of ore obtained, this total systems approach should not only take in handling and haulage in and out of the mine, but also storage and transfer at the terminals (ref. 2,3,t), including ship and barge loading and unloading which are likewise a major consideration (ref. 5). Much has been developed during the past century in bulk handling, particularly in its expanding use in the mining industry. In view of the major role bulk handling has played and will continue to play in mining, in commemorating AIME's centennial, this paper will attempt to outline the state-of-the-art at this three-quarter point of the 20th century - one that is marked by its industrial revolution and rapidly accelerating technological advances. This paper describes the U. S. Energy Research and Development Administration's (ERDA) program to develop in situ coal conversion processes, especially gasification, he potential of this technology, the technical directions being explored, and the program strategy to carry the process concepts toward commercialization are emphasized. The geographic location of the U. S. coal resources and a market analysis are described. Commercially successful in situ coal processes could add over a trillion tons of coal to the U. S. coal reserves. The economics of these processes is compared with surface gasification independent studies show this process to be 25Z cheaper than surface gasification for Western coals. The major projects are briefly described. The Linked Vertical Well process is in the lost advanced stage and shows great promise. The last test produced a low-Btu gas averaging 171 Btu per standard cubic foot for average pro¬duction rates of 5.5 million standard cubic feet per day. The other projects are Packed Bed, Longwall Generator, and Steeply Dipping Beds.

Longwall mining is considered the most efficient underground coal mining technique in terms of coal extraction ratio, production rate, and safety standards. Due to the increasing demand for higher coal production, wider panel and faster face movement have become the recent trends. Thus, longwall mining can create unexpected threats such as roof falls, excessive face convergence, shield damage and numerous maintenance problems causing sudden interruption of coal production and serious safety hazards. A recent study at the University of Alabama is dedicated to develop LoSCoMS (Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System) which integrates real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis, forecasting, and warning modules. The main objectives of this system is to provide the stability and maintenance information, at every minute, such as high load, low setting pressure, leg leakage, etc., analysis of various mining and geological parameters to determine past and present roof characteristics and forecasting of loading patterns for the following mining cycles, next periodic weighting, etc. Using this unique system, mine operating personnel are well aware of past, present and future roof loading patterns at the longwall face, and thus, proper safety measures can be taken ahead of time.

This paper will address the feasibility of using low-density cellular concrete (LDCC) for an annular fill application where project conditions required pumping the LDCC material for distances of up to 16,000 feet. These conditions occurred during construction of the Kaneohe-Kailua Sewer Tunnel in Oahu, Hawaii, between 2014 and 2018. Located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, this 13-foot-diameter rock tunnel extends for approximately three miles from the Kaneohe Pre-Treatment Facility to the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. The tunnel was built to convey wastewater and provide temporary storage for peak wet weather flows entering the collection system, thereby reducing the potential for uncontrolled discharges. LDCC was chosen for this project partly due to its environmental benefits, which were essential for an application contiguous to the inland marine and coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean. In order to ensure optimal performance characteristics—compressive strength (with a requirement of 300 psi at 56 days), flowability, and light weight—were achieved, extensive testing of various LDCC products and mix designs was completed. The testing measured the initial set time of the LDCC as well as the compressive strength needed to reduce the quantity of grout lifts required for the project.

Bessac's presence in Singapore started in 2014 with the construction of the Thomson metro line, which includes 18 miles of twin-bore tunnels and 22 stations split into 17 construction packages. Bessac joint venture was allotted the T219 lot. The works include the construction of a new 660-foot (200-meter) long transfer station, two parallel 19-foot (5.8 m) ID tunnels and a pedestrian underpass. The urban context and the very soft ground stratum imposed to utilize unusual tunneling techniques, from upgrading a slurry TBM to a high-density slurry TBM to launch with very low cover and canopy pipe roofing completed with a MTBM without retrieval shaft.

Heap leaching has become one of the prime technologies used for the recovery of precious metals from low-grade ores over the past ten years. The recovery process involves mining and stacking the ore on engineered leach pads, with or without crushing and/or agglomeration, followed by leaching with a low concentration sodium cyanide solution. The metal-bearing, pregnant solution is then processed by zinc precipitation or activated carbon absorption to extract the precious metals. The leaching process continues until all economic metal values are removed at which time the spent heap leach pads, the leached materials and excess process solutions require decommissioning. The management of these solutions may present a potential challenge for successful and environmentally sound decommissioning due to their composition, volume or continuity of generation from the spent ore even though active leaching has been terminated. The principal objectives of solution management in decommissioning spent heap leach pads are to meet all operative environmental regulations in a cost-effective manner and to leave the pads in a condition where they do not present a long-term liability either to the operator or to the environment. This involves the reduction in volume of the residual process solutions and/or treatment of these solutions to where they meet applicable water quality criteria. In the past, the environmental and economic aspects of decommissioning and solution management have been overlooked or under-estimated during the planning of mining operations. As a result, there is a potential for long-term liabilities and costs to be recognized only at the end of active leaching, a time at which operating revenues and cash-flow are minimal. Therefore, the decommissioning process requires addressing at the mine planning stage and agencies now require that a plan for solution management after the cessation of operations be submitted prior to initiation of mining. This paper discusses aspects of process solution management during decommissioning, both in terms of quantity and quality, and how potential issues may be recognized and planned for in the initial stages of heap leach design.

The search. for massive sulphide orebodies is steadily being extended to greater depths as well as expanding outward into the large portion of the earth's surface where the sulphide bodies are deeply weathered. Massive sulphide orebodies are generally not large in dimensions. They are not like disseminated type sulphide bodies that form large ground exploration targets that can be detected at greater and greater depths simply by increasing the geometrical spacing between the geophysical transmitter and receiver. In¬creasing the transmitter-receiver spacing with massive sulphide bodies eventually "waters down" the anomaly from the body until it disappears into noise. If high surface conductivity is present, as is common in areas of deep weathering, the problem is compounded by the increasing response of the surface layer, as the receiver-transmitter spacing is expanded. The search to greater depths has important implications other than just detection of the orebody. Drilling costs are increased and the probability of missing the target are increased. Missing an orebody is an expense that is difficult to evaluate in dollars per line mile of survey especially since one does not know the value of what was missed. A ground Pulse EM method has the capabilities of solving the problems of deeper exploration particularly in areas of surface weathering it can attain deep penetration without large coil spacings, it also provides information from a complete range of frequencies. The method has other operational advantages since it is free of geometrical restrictions as to coil alignments and can operate in areas of high power line noise.

Brohm Mining Corporation, in conjunction with Geobiotics, Inc. has nearly completed a pilot heap biooxidation test on sulfidic ore from the Gilt Edge Mine near Rapid City, South Dakota. Some results from the pilot testing have shown the correlation between the extent of biooxidation and the increase in cyanide gold recovery seen in the laboratory. Bench scale testing showed approximately a 1: 1 correspondence between percent biooxidation and percentage increase in gold recovery. The economics of large scale biooxidation were also evaluated in terms of increased gold recovery versus the time and cost of biooxidation. In the pilot test, the rate of biooxidation became limited by the acid water neutralization system. Later in the test, measures were taken to overcome this problem. Results from bench scale column bioleach testing showed that the Gilt Edge sulfide ore is quite amenable to biooxidation with a substantial increase in gold recovery with just partial biooxidation. Direct cyanide gold recovery of 51 % on ore crushed to -3/8" was enhanced to 82-85% after oxidation of37% of the sulfide as measured by iron. Laboratory experiments also showed that the slow rate of biooxidation of this ore could be accelerated by removal of metal sulfate build up from the leach liquor. The combination of these normally non-toxic metals became inhibitory to biooxidation if not removed by the neutralization circuit.

l, INTRODUCTION Uranium mine and mill workers are exposed to external gamma and beta radiation fields from radioactive ore. In the past the average uranium content of ores mined in the United States and Canada ranged from about 0.1% to 1.0% U308 with pockets of much higher grade ore. Holiday (1973) reported that radiation surveys in the U.S. uranium mines found mean gamma "radiation rates ranged from 0.20 to 0.70 mrem/h. Such radiation rates cause relatively insignificant exposures." Others also concluded that the external gamma radiation fields associated with uranium mining did not result in significant worker exposures (Federal Radiation Council, 1967; Simpson, S.D. [et al], 1959) Gamma exposure levels in most modern-day Canadian uranium mines are reported to be low with average annual exposures estimated to be less than 1 rem/a (Frost, S.E. [et al], 1981). However, two developments are taking place which affect the potential significance of external radiation fields in the uranium mining environment. The first development stems from the most recent system of dose limitation developed by the ICRP which is intended to limit the workers' overall risk from exposure to ionizing radiation through the adoption of a sum rule (ICRP 26, 1977) which combines external and internal radiation exposures. In the case of exposure to radon daughters the sum rule will have the effect of reducing the annual exposure limit below the recommended limit by an amount that depends on external radiation and other sources of internal exposure such as the inhalation of ore dust (ICRP 1980). The Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada (AECB) is reviewing this subject and is expected to produce its recommendations shortly. Irrespective of the form of the sum rule eventually adopted by the AECB, it is clear that the net effect of the sum rule will be a collective reduction of the individual dose limits for individual exposure pathways. The second factor is the increasing development of high grade uranium deposits in Northern Saskatchewan. Some of these ore bodies have an average ore grade of 1% to 5% U308 or greater. Since the potential external radiation fields increase in proportion to the ore grade, it is apparent that increased effort in radiation protection planning is required in order to develop safe yet workable methods for mining and milling such ores. This paper is intended to provide information which can be of assistance in the formulation and development of a mining and milling plan. The principal focus of the paper is source identification and the design of radiation protection measures to limit external gamma radiation exposure. The exposure of workers to external beta radiation fields is also discussed. The paper is organized as follows: - Section 2 deals with source characterization. - Section 3 discusses the effects of finite source size and distance (i.e. geometry effects). - Section 4 presents selected data that are useful in evaluating shielding requirements. - Section 5 discusses the potential beta radiation fields. - Section 6 discusses practical data requirements for worker exposure scenarios. - Section 7 presents a variety of work exposure calculations. - Section 8 is a summary of this paper. 2. SOURCE CHARACTERIZATION This section develops the basic formulae for estimating the fluxes and doses from external gamma radiation. The calculation of the radiation flux due to a distributed source (i.e. a linear, area or volume source) as a function of distance assumes that any distributed source can be treated as a summation of point sources. [ ] Uranium ore contains radionuclides from both the decay chains of U-238 and U-235. In this paper the radioactive daughters are assumed to be in secular equilibrium with the uranium parent. (If natural thorium were present in the ore in significant quantities, the gamma rays originating from Th-232 would have to be added to the gamma rays from the uranium series). This study is carried out in the Zenit mining concession, which is located in the city of San Pablo in the department of Cajamarca in Peru. The Project has 33 mineralized structures and according to laboratory analyzes we have the presence of gold and silver. The geostatistical evaluation provides an analysis on the distribution of precious metals in the vein. This information is used to improve the efficiency of metal extraction and to reduce costs. The general objective is to evaluate the polymetallic veins (Au and Ag), for which the classification of resources (measured, indicated, and inferred) has been carried out, taking into account the parameters of minimum distance from the composite, corresponding volume and tonnage calculation. In addition, an inventory of estimated geological resources was carried out with the block grades obtained to generate the tonnage-grade curves.

The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit's development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts' occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. The given paper is an attempt to work out the main principals to approach the creation of sustainable development model in regard of the definite region case. FMC Gold's Paradise Peak Mine was one of the top two producers of mercury metal in North America in 1988 and 1989. As a by-product, elemental mercury is produced from cyanide soluble mercury minerals, primarily to reduce the health risks incurred with the refining of precious metal precipitate containing elemental mercury and mercury amalgams. A discussion of the design, primarily the Merrill-Crowe units, and permitting for the safe production of mercury will be presented. Additionally, laboratory testwork to determine the effect of mercury on reagent requirements in the Merrill-Crowe process will be discussed.

The complex processes involved in rockfall events necessitate a probabilistic modeling approach with well-calibrated material properties. The controls designed to mitigate rockfall hazards need to be reliable, efficient, and safe to deploy to meet the constraints present at an active mine. This paper presents an innovative solution to rockfall at Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon Mine. The solution incorporates the site-specific calibration and creation of a predictive rockfall model with the design, field testing, implementation, and monitoring of the rockfall controls.

Large scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogenous mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to take advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semi- autogenous mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4,476 kW (6,000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 mtpd (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and five variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.

Productive and beneficial use of reclaimed surface-mined land is a concern of industry, government, and the general public. An investigation was conducted of current mined-land planning practices to aid in the development of a procedure for evaluating postmining land use potentials. This investigation considered both the industry and public planning approach to mined-land planning and was based primarily upon three case studies conducted in various regions of the United States. The site planning process that was developed during the investigation is iterative in nature and has been designed specifically for the mining industry. It centers around preliminary studies and data collection, development of land use alternatives, and the evaluation of alternatives. Use of this process facilitates the evaluation of economic, environ- mental, and social impacts of postmining land use alternatives. In this paper, the process is presented along with a description of its development, application, and significance.

Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4 production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the Bclay^ waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of BOLI Flowsheet^ provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5 ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5 content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. The new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enables the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current phosphate ore deposits by extending the fraction P2O5 of recovered
