The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, studied the use of manganese sea nodules for catalytic oxidation in air of 1 pct carbon monoxide, 1 pct propane, and 1 pct methane. Catalysts were prepared from both Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean nodules and compared with a platinum catalyst using a fixed-bed, steady-state microreactor with gas chromatographic analysis. Combustion temperatures with manganese nodules were 50° to 100° C lower than those with the platinum catalyst. Ion-exchange addition of rare-earth promotors to the nodule catalyst decreased combustion temperatures an additional 5° to 45° C.

The Bureau of Mines investigated carbonyl processing techniques for the recovery of the critical metals Ni, Co, Mn, and Cr from domestic primary and secondary sources. In most cases, the source materials require reductive precarbonylation treatment to metallize the contained Fe, Ni, and Co compounds to render them reactive with CO. The critical metals were recovered either by direct conversion to the respective carbonyls or as upgraded products by carbonyl removal of an undesirable metal. Best metal-to-metal carbonyl conversion was under CO pressure, from 80 atm upward, and at 1400 C. Carbonylation was accelerated by the addition of HzS in small quantities. CO pressure, temperature, promoter and pretreatment trends, and other factors enhancing metal carbonyl formation are presented.

Investigation into the expressions of the field produced by a loop over a conducting half space or in an infinite conducting half space are well documented. Reasonably complex descriptions of the effects of stratification also are reported. However, a model which must contain all of these complexities because of transmission to depths of 15,000 feet and also include the pertibation of the field by a verticle cylindrical steel casing loses its facility in the field or for quick, accurate approximation to field magnitudes and phase. This paper describes the results of two field tests to determine the attenuation and phase versus depth and frequency of an electromagnetic wave (induction field). A simple two-layer model is postulated to predict the magnitude and phase of the induced field which does not require sophisticated computing tools. Correlation of the model with experimental results show agreement of most amplitude measurements to within 3 db and most phase measurements to within five degrees. The tests were conducted in a 7400 foot deep well in Nevada and an 11,000 foot deep well in Wyoming which had conductivities ranging from .0025 mhos/m to .25 mhos/m. The surface transmitting dipole had an area of ~ 10 6 feet squared and constant frequency signals of 1.5 Hz to 20 Hz were transmitted through the earth utilizing less than 65 watts of power. Model Description The magnetic field intensity components generated by a magnetic dipole immersed in an infinite homogeneous medium can be expressed in spherical coordinates as: [ ] where N, I, and (p a ) are the transmitting antenna turns, current, and effective area, respectively, and r is the range from the loops circumference to the measurement point. Trailing-cable splices are evaluated for moisture exclusion abilities after repeated travel over shuttle-car sheave wheels. Tests are conducted on cables with jackets made of neoprene, cholrosulphonated polyethylene (CSPE), and nitrile butadiene-polyvinyl chloride (NBR-PVC) to 50° C. The results show that some splice kits are effective as received, others are improved with minor but significant changes, and still others must be redesigned to be effective in underground applications. Laboratory results are compared with actual underground splice results. Recommendations for cable preparation prior to splicing are presented.

7. Hoisting Systems Hoists used solely for emergency escape use should above all, be simple and dependable. The hoist systems' motive power should be independent of all other mine equipment so that only an emergency in the immediate vicinity of the hoist will render it inoperative. The hoist should receive the same high level of inspection as is normal with any other man hoisting system. It should be operated at regular intervals, and must include sufficient safety devices to ensure safe operation when hoisting men. Of equal importance, however, safety devices must be included to safeguard the hoist system from in¬advertant damage due to inspection, maintenance or operator error In an emergency situation the hoist operator will be under considerable stress and the system must be simple and foolproof to operate. Under normal circumstances the hoist will only be operated during the regular inspection cycle. Because of this very low operational use rate, certain requirements, normally associated with man hoisting, can be relaxed. In particular the wire rope installation requirements, in terms of drum and sheave diameter and fleet angles, can be reduced provided that rope inspection during the system life is maintained at a high level. The following section includes recommended guidelines for emergency hoist system design, installation, operation, maintenance and inspection A summary of available hoisting equipment and components is included in Appendix C. MFIRE is useful for the analysis of ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence MFIRE simu¬lates a mine&apos;s ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters, external influences, and internal influences Extensive output enables detailed quantitative analysis of the effects of the proposed alteration on the ventilation system MFIRE was written in FORTRAN 77 and compiled with Microsoft° FORTRAN for the Intel 8086-8088 central processing units The source code is listed in appendix A for users who wish to modify the source code for operation on other computers MFIRE MODIFICATIONS OF MTU-BOM CODE The program described in Bureau of Mines Informa¬tion Circular 8901 has become known as the MTU-BOM codes MFIRE is an evolutionary product of the MTU¬BOM code with major improvements and enhancements 6 For users previously familiar with the MTU-BOM code, the following is a listing of the major improvements and enhancements incorporated by MFIRE 1 The length of an airway is an input value, LA The elevation difference of the airway is calculated from the elevation input, Z, in both programs It is possible for a data file to describe an airway that is shorter than its el¬evation difference The MTU-BOM code does not check for this error and uses the values of LA and Z This does not cause a computational problem, only a simulation problem MFIRE issues a warning message for this case, and the airway length is made equal to the elevation dif¬ference if LA is less than Z 2 To evaluate rock temperatures (average wall surface temperature of airway before a fire), it is assumed that the air temperature at an airway entrance is equal to the air temperature at the airway starting junction, and that the air temperature at the airway exit is equal to the air tem¬perature at the exit junction. Measure the daily exposure of individual miners to alpha particles emitted by radon daughters (radioactive decay products of the radon gas present in the mine atmosphere). Approach A dosimeter worn by a miner counts alpha particle emissions from radon daughters, RaA (Polonium 218) and RaC (Polonium 214), collected on a filter, and stores the gross count for later readout. How It Works A pump draws air into the detector assembly where radon daughters are collected on a filter. The detector, a solid state surface barrier type, is mounted in the filter head behind a thin mylar disc which serves as a moisture barrier. When a radon daughter decays and its alpha emission strikes the detector, the alpha particle causes a pulse of electrical charge in the detector. The circuits used to condition and count the electrical pulses generated in the detector are represented by the other blocks shown in the simplified block diagram. Each pulse is first amplified.

Improve the safety of roof bolting machine operators working in underground coal mines while maintaining or improving efficiency of the roof bolting operation. Approach The Bureau of Mines funded research under contact to develop equipment that would assure greater safety in drilling holes and installing roof bolts. The research led to the design and fabrication of a roof-boiling machine that allows its operator to per-form drilling and bolting tasks while under permanently sup-ported roof or canopy protection. How the Prototype Works The major components of the remote-control roof bolter are a flexible-shaft drill that provides continuous drilling capability without the need to Stop to add drill extensions for long holes; a roof-bolt inserter that can bend a longer-than-seam height roof bolt into the drilled hole; and a roof-bolt lifter/torquer that completes insertion of the roof bolt into the hole and torques it to the desired tension.

Improve underground mine roof bolt support systems by alleviating problems associated with certain ground support systems currently being used. Approach Convert a passive resin-grouted roof bolt system into a uniform, tensionable roof bolting system. Background Resin-grouted roof bolts are one of the most common forms of ground support in U.S. underground coal mines. These support systems can be installed with a full-column of grout and be loaded with subsequent roof movements after installation. This is called a "passive" support system. An alternative to the passive support system is the mechanically-anchored, tensioned roof bolt system. This system is installed with resin grout. This system is designed to load or tension the support during installation by using a mechanical anchor, coupling, or threaded nut after the resin has properly cured. It is called an "active" support system and is used extensively for improved strata control in a laminated geologic deposition or in difficult ground conditions. To ensure that active bolts have been properly installed, the bolt loads must be checked by using a torque wrench or other suitable equipment. Unfortunately, this practice presents potential safety hazards and has limited accuracy. Laboratory and field experiments also reveal that the torque-to-tension ratio developed on active support systems can vary by 50% from bolt-to-bolt. Variations in bolt load installations can induce stress concentrations and lead to roof degradation or failure.

"The Bureau of Mines receives and answers many requests for information on the qualities and properties of American coals, and also publishes many papers that deal with coal characteristics. Compilations of chemical analyses of coal from specific locations are contained in a series of technical papers,2/ by States, whereas typical analyses of coal seams, by States and counties, are given in data books, volumes 1 to 7,2/ by producing districts, as defined in the Bituminous Coal Act of 1937. Bulletin 446, ""Typical Analyses of Coals of the United States,"" condenses and supplements these data books, which do not apply to the Western States. Other coal properties are described in numerous publications listed in the Bureau of Mines Bibliography of Publications. However, no recent publication lists average B.t.u. values by rank on a Statewide and national scale. Averages have been estimated in the past, and some of them are included in this paper for comparison.The average and the ranges of as-received B.t.u. values of American coals on a Nation-wide basis, as found by the statistical method described in this paper, are given in table 2 and on a State-wide basis in table 3. The following is abstracted from table 2:In deriving average B.t.u. values for coals, the results depend on the type of data available and the methods of calculation. The data, or analyses, may represent any of three types of samples - mine, tipple, or delivered. In mine sampling, a channel cut is made of a vertical face of the coal bed, carefully excluding most of the impurities, and the material retained is the sample. It is readily seen that mine samples are selected samples and do not strictly represent the unmined coal bed, unless the coal contains no major impurities. Mine samples generally represent the best-quality coal that could be produced. In contrast to mine samples, tipple and delivered samples represent coal that actually has been mined, and their analyses may show either lower or higher values than mine samples of the same coal, depending on treatment and preparation after mining.Of the thousands of analyses accumulated by the Bureau of Mines, most are of either tipple or delivered samples and represent the coal after it has been mined. Any average calculated from this aggregate of data will, consequently, reflect coal that has been produced, and not unmined coal in situ.The method of calculating an average from the basic data also will have considerable influence. If there are three seams of coal in a county, the average analysis for the county is not necessarily the arithmetic mean of analyses of the three individual seams. For a probable average of unmined coal, the B.t.u. values of each seam should be weighted in proportion to the unmined reserves of each seam. In similar manner, an average for past pro¬duction should be weighed according to the past production for each seam. Figures for coal reserves are only estimates based upon geologic evidence and its interpretation. Production records are much more accurate than estimated reserves, although detailed production records for individual seams by counties are very few."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), with US Foam Technologies, Inc. and On Site Gas Systems, Inc., conducted research on the remote application of extinguishing agents with the intent of improving deployment strategies to limit miner exposure and to help ensure the best possible outcome during a mine fire. Full-scale in-mine were conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to determine the flow characteristics, stability and fire-suppression capability of gas-enhanced foam. The in-mine experimental work was designed to evaluate movement of gas-enhanced foam through mine workings closely simulating an underground coal mine environment and how long gas-enhanced foam would remain stable. This paper presents results of the experiments and provides valuable insight into mine fire deployment strategies for gas-enhanced foam technology.

METHANE EMISSION PEAKS Methane emission from the coal at continuous miner faces varies considerably. Plotted on a chart, methane emissions consist of a series of peaks and valleys corresponding to the cutting cycle of the mining machine, with the methane concentration spiking as the machine cuts into the coal (Figure 3–1) [Kissell et al. 1974]. As part of the Bureau of Mines program to broaden utilization of abundant low-quality mineral materials, the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Laboratory conducted beneficiation studies on two Alabama clays. The main purpose of these studies was to develop improved plasticity and green strength in both clays and compare these improved properties with those of a typical ball clay. Whiteness of the clays was also considered. The results indicated that by adjusting the pH of the kaolin to approximately 9, a substitute for ball clay could be obtained. The investigation also showed that by a combination of attrition grinding and sodium dithionite leaching to remove iron, the underclay could be upgraded to a ball clay material.

One of the refining processes to which lubricating oils are frequently subjected effects a reduction in content of paraffin wax. The actual treatment usually involves chilling and filter pressing; the most important result accomplished from a commercial point of view is lowering of the ""cold test"" of the oil. The Bureau of Mines has recently had occasion to ascertain the effect of changes in paraffin wax content upon the viscosity of oil and has conducted a series of experiments described in the present report.Object of the present investigation:The Bureau of Mines has devised and is using a method for the analysis of crude petroleum* which includes determination of the viscosities of lubricating oil distillates. The Bureau method does not provide for preliminary removal of paraffin wax, and it has seemed advisable to determine whether this omission causes any important variation from the results that would be obtained through commercial refinery processing. It was also thought that the present tests, though limited in scope, might be of some practical value in indicating the general effect of paraffin content upon one of the most important properties of lubricating oil.Experimental procedureA five-gallon sample of Pennsylvania crude petroleum was distilled at atmospheric pressure until 50 per cent of the charge had been vaporized. Two liters of the residuum was distilled at a reduced pressure of 40 mm. (absolute) and cuts were separated that came over between the temperature limits of 250° to 275° C. (462° to 527° F.) and 275° to 300° C. (527° to 572° F.). The viscosities of these fractions were determined and they were subsequently subjected to treatment that removed successive percentages of paraffin wax. Viscosity temperature curves were determined for the oil obtained after each removal of wax.

A mineral survey conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1984 identified no mineral resources or prospects with mineral development potential in the Pit River Canyon Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Basalt suitable for aggregate and fill is in the WSA but rock of this nature is abundant in the region and closer to potential markets.

Native asphalt was produced in 1977 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output declined 39% to 1,237,000 tons valued at $18,874,000. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert. Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsanite Co. in Uinta County. Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County. Utah. The asphalt was used for streets and roads, and for other purposes.

During a recent National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health field evaluation of a newly designed filtration and pressurization system for an enclosed cab of a surface drill, it was determined that the drill operator&apos;s respirable-dust exposure was significantly increased during time periods when the cab door was opened to manually guide another section of drill steel into place to achieve additional cutting depth. Although no dust cloud was visible when the door was opened to perform this task, the drill operator&apos;s exposure was documented (over a three-day test period) to be nine times higher than when the cab door was closed. Even at this higher respirable-dust concentration, the drill operator&apos;s exposure remained well below the permissible exposure limit governed by the federal dust standard; however, an alternative method is being investigated to guide the drill steel in place in order to eliminate this increased exposure. .

Liquid-liquid extraction techniques were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines for the fractionation of rare-earth solutions. Separatory funnel work using tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) for extracting ceric nitrate from solutions containing sulfate ion resulted in almost complete extraction. Similar tests using primary amines for splitting trivalent rare-earth pairs and fractions gave promising results. The ceric nitrate extraction procedure was scaled-up by use of pressure-bubbler equipment, a series of spray towers for extraction, washing, and stripping. In this case only 84 percent ceric nitrate extraction efficiency was achieved. This work was done using dilute sulfuric acid for stripping.
