A mathematical model of a decision is represented by the table in Figure 4. The numbers in the matrix are a measure of the effectiveness of each alternate for an objective. In this case, it is the per cent of desired profit that is satisfied by each alternate for each objective. By adding all of the values in a row, we have a measure of which alternative is best for both objectives. However, if you think that alternate 1 is necessarily better than alternate 2, you are wrong. Why? Because the weight of the objectives may not be equal. It could just be that this plant can sell more than it can produce, so that the loss in profit represented by increased sales is more than twice as important as reductions in costs. (See Figure 5). In that case, let us weigh objective 1 as 30 per cent and objective 2 as 70 per cent. It must also be obvious that the sum of all the "objective weights" must equal 100 per cent. "The iron ores of the Kiruna Mine in Sweden are of exceptional quality but for the phosphorus content in certain zones of the orebody. The prevention of mixing ores high in phosphorus with those low in phosphorus has always been of significant economic importance. The ongoing introduction of tele-mining and automatic haulage by LHDs requires new means in the field of quality control underground, as the experienced miner as well as the underground laboratory assistant no longer are involved in the process. As of 1998 LKAB has been testing prototypes of LIF Analysers for non-contact and real-time measurement of the phosphorus content of ore being transported by LHDs from the stopes to the respective ore pass assigned to a certain ore quality. The principles of the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence, the different test phases and results are described and conclusions made. With bulk sorting of ore underground the mining engineer supports the efforts of the metallurgist in the processing plant.INTRODUCTIONThe Kiruna Mine of LKAB, Sweden is the largest underground iron ore mine in the world. In the early nineties LKAB decided to develop the Kiruna orebody further down from the 775m main level to a new main level at 1045m. This development programme was realised while in the mineral processing section and in the pellet plant further capacity was added (Wyllie 1996).In addition to deepening of the mine, which opened up 330 million tonnes of ore, the exploitation of the so-called lake ore was included in the future planning, adding another 1 15 million tonnes of mineable ore. At an annual production of approximately 20 million tonnes of ore the Kiruna Mine today looks at a developed ore reserve sufficient for the next 20 years.All of the competitors’ ores traded in the world market are from open pit operations. LKAB compensates for the obvious disadvantages by continuous efforts to make the best possible use of her high quality magnetite ore deposit. This objective is realised by combined efforts in the pellet plant, the mineral processing plant and the mine. Propriety processes, latest big scale equipment and high tech solutions for automation lead to high quality sales products at a reasonable cost."

The Canadian Clean Power Coalition (CCPC) was created in 2001 to protect and enhance Canada’s vast coal and other carbon-based resource wealth, and to ensure that environmental public policy decisions recognize that these resources are a Canadian asset, not an environmental liability. To achieve its mandate, CCPC has undertaken to demonstrate technologies for use in new coal-fired power plants to control air emissions including carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxides (SOx), mercury (Hg), and particulates (PM). The first phase of the demonstration project assessed three existing technologies for coal-fired power plants that reduce all emissions, including CO2, to levels equivalent to or below that of gas-fired power plants. The technologies considered in this phase included integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC), ‘oxyfuel’ combustion, and amine scrubbing of pulverized coal. These technologies were evaluated with three coal types: Eastern bituminous, western sub-bituminous, and lignite coals. This paper presents the studies, conclusions concerning the capital and operating costs of these technologies, the cost of electricity produced (with CO2 removed), and the cost per tonne of CO2 avoided. It also discusses the potential for using captured CO2 for enhanced oil recovery, and possible technology enhancements for improving the competitiveness of gasification of low-rank western Canadian coals. The second ongoing phase of CCPC’s work includes the design and construction of a commercial-scale plant to demonstrate the feasibility of integrated gas combined cycle (IGCC) and/or polygeneration technologies and the potential for using the CO2 generated for enhanced recovery of conventional oil.

Cependant, plusieurs analyses, pourtant essentielles à l'évaluation de la viabilité du projet, sont réalisées en parallèle sans véritable optimisation ni synergie avec l'ensemble des données disponibles. Cet article présente deux approches permettant d'intégrer certains types d'analyses aux modèles de blocs miniers. Ces approches permettent de quantifier la broyabilité du massif rocheux ainsi que d'étudier la stabilité des pentes minières à même les outils d'optimisation et de planification minières. Cette méthode permet dès l'étude de faisabilité d'un projet minier de maximiser les données disponibles, menant ainsi à une approche plus intégrée en conception minière. De plus, ces approches sont flexibles et permettent d'évaluer rapidement plusieurs scénarios, tout en laissant la possibilité de bonifier le modèle et de revoir la conception tout au long du projet minier.

"Under certain conditions of moisture and oxygen, sulphides can spontaneously heat, a phenomenon known as self-heating. In this paper, we test a hypothesis that galvanic interaction between some sulphides can promote self-heating. Galvanic interaction is controlled by restpotential difference between minerals and their surface area of contact (particle size). In order to decrease rest-potential, four sulphides were tested: pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. Two series of samples consisting of mixtures of two sulphides, each representing a mass fraction of 50 %, were run in standard self-heating tests. The first series comprised five mixtures, two with low rest-potential difference (pyrite-chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite-sphalerite) and three with high rest-potential difference (pyrite-galena, chalcopyrite-galena and pyrite-sphalerite). The second series was performed on a pyrite-sphalerite mixture at four particle sizes (80 % passing 850 µm, 300 µm, 75 µm and 38 µm). The first series showed that the individual sulphides and the mixtures of low rest-potential difference did not self-heat but the mixtures of high rest-potential difference did self-heat. The second series showed that self-heating increased inversely with particle size (increased specific surface area) and revealed that it was the fineness of the pyrite (high rest-potential sulphide) that governed the self-heating effect, indicating the rate-limiting step is the reduction reaction on pyrite (cathodic mineral). The increase in self-heating with high rest-potential difference and increasing particle fineness supports the hypothesis that galvanic interaction contributes to sulphide self-heating. A possible mechanism based on the hydrogen sulphide hypothesis is proposed where the reduction reaction at the cathodic mineral surface is ferric to ferrous. The understanding gained will be of interest to those involved in storage, shipping and disposal of sulphide minerals.INTRODUCTIONSulphide mineral ores are the major source of most base metals such as copper, zinc, nickel and lead. Once the ore is extracted, the sulphide minerals are liberated by size reduction (crushing and grinding), concentrated by flotation, and the concentrates sent for further processing to extract the metal (smelting and refining). At the various stages from mining to concentrate shipment and tailings storage, the sulphides are exposed to a variety of environments, which under certain conditions of air (oxygen), humidity and temperature can cause them to heat. Since no external heat source is involved, this pyrophoric process is known as spontaneous heating or, more commonly, self-heating. The self-heating of sulphides is associated with oxidation reactions under moist conditions. If the heat generated is greater than the heat dissipated, the sulphides will self-heat and the material temperature will rise. This can make working conditions potentially dangerous as oxygen is consumed from the surrounding air and significant quantities of sulphur dioxide (SO2) can be released (Ninteman, 1978)."

"The Laronde mill was commissioned in 1988 and has been treating the Laronde Penna ore since 2000. The Laronde plant, situated in the Abitibi region of Quebec, has experienced mill expansions to accommodate 7500 mtpd and to recover gold and silver as well as important amounts of base metals (Cu, Zn, Pb). Ten sequential metallurgical and environmental processes are responsible for metals recovery and process viability. Over 200,000 ounces of gold, 4,5 million ounces of silver, 7000 tonnes of copper, and 78,000 tonnes of zinc are produced annually.In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking high grade (35-45 g/t Au) pyrite sulphide concentrate (TCGO) for gold extraction at a newly constructed treatment plant, increasing gold output at Laronde by 40,000 ounces. In 2009, the high gold grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the Laronde plant increasing output by 120,000 ounces of gold. TCGO and Lapa productions are forecasted until 2018 and 2015 respectively, with known reserves of each mine.Today, up to 140 permanent employees run and optimise the Laronde plant operation. As a result, Laronde has intricacies intrinsic to a large and varied operation. The paper will outline the metallurgical highlights, challenges, and future outlook related to the treatment of each ore type (Laronde, TCGO, and Lapa).INTRODUCTIONFollowing the 2000 to 2003 expansions, the Laronde plant evolved into a mature milling complex with developed processing, man power, and water treatment capabilities able to accommodate the complex Laronde ore. The ore requires a series of grinding, copper/lead flotation and separation, zinc flotation, zinc tails precious metals leaching, followed by a counter-current decantation circuit and Merrill Crowe precipitation. A paste backfill and SO2-air cyanide destruction operate intermittently. The tailings area has a dedicated cyanide destruction and metals precipitation plant prior to water recycling to the mill. A biological water treatment plant was put into service in 2004 to address the build-up of thiocyanate in the tailings ponds at Laronde. This was the result of the high sulphide content of the Laronde ore and 90% recirculation of the process water. The plant uses bacteria to oxidize and destroy thiocyanate, and removes phosphate from the water before it is released to the environment."

"By using the latest generation of medium voltage frequency converters, new possibilities have arisen to improve the grinding process. Beside all the direct and indirect advantages, several dedicated functions have now been implemented for ring geared grinding mills in the minerals industry. The advanced operational functions ensure a smooth, safe and reliable operation with minimum stress for the mechanical equipment and therefore highest availability of the mill. Several papers have already been presented concerning the benefits of using this state of the art technology for mill drives (Ravani von Ow and Bomvisinho, 2010; Ravani von Ow and Gerhard, 2010). However this paper will not only show and explain the operational benefit of these functions, but will focus on the experiences gained with this kind of sophisticated ring geared mill drive system. Several measurements of different operating conditions (starting, frozen charge remover, controlled roll back, backlash, etc.) made on an installed and commissioned 2 x 5 MW dual pinion ring geared mill drive system will be shown and discussed. Also the accuracy of the load sharing between the two 5 MW motors during starting, normal operation and stopping will be demonstrated using real measurements from an operating system. Finally the inherent features of these drive systems are briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONLooking at the demands of grinding mills, we can split them into operational, maintenance and protective demands. For smooth and safe operation, it is important that critical situations are avoided as much as possible. Maintenance functionality must be quick and easy to execute, while protection of the system is important during all operating conditions. ABB has considered all these demands during development of their dedicated mill functions. By adding an additional controller (mill controller), not only a lot of application related functionality and protection is included, but also the interface between the mill drive system and the customer’s distributed control system (DCS) is simplified."

"The first known use of activated carbon dates back to the Ancient Egyptians who utilized its adsorbent properties for purifying oils and medicinal purposes. Centuries later, the early ocean going vessels stored drinking water in wooden barrels, the inside of which had been charred. (However, by modern definition the carbon used in these applications could not truly be described as activated.) By the early 19th century, both wood and bone charcoal was in large scale use for the decolorization and purification of cane sugar.However, it was not until the beginning of the First World War that the potential of activated carbon was really capitalized upon. The advent of gas warfare necessitated the development of suitable respiratory devices for personnel protection. Granular activated carbon was used to this end as, indeed, it still is today.By the late 1930's there was considerable industrial scale use of carbon for both gaseous and liquid phase application and new manufacturing processes had been developed to satisfy the needs of industry. During the 1939-1945 war, a further significant development took place - the production of more sophisticated chemically impregnated carbon for the removal of both war and nerve gases."

Remnant pillars evolve towards the latter stages of mining in an orebody and act as repositories of mining-induced stress. It is therefore crucial to plan ahead as to their dimensions and location with respect to the local geology. A case study of a Canadian base metal mine was examined for the planned mining sequence scenario to identify the stress regimes acting on a future remnant pillar occurring between levels 4800 and 5100, near a brittle dyke. A mine-wide model was constructed in FLAC3D and input parameters included results from field measurements of the direction and magnitude of the principal stresses, and the geomechanical properties of the different formations. Prior to the study, the model was calibrated based on a 6-year record of mining-induced seismicity and rockburst events, focusing on large event clusters. The mining sequence followed at the mine was then used in the model to study the planned future extraction program around the remnant pillar. It is shown that the distance of the remnant pillar from the dyke and another orebody plays an influential role on the stress levels developed in the pillar.

When this prototype is placed on stream next to a conventional grinding mill as you suggest how do we estimate the power requirements and the grind which will be achieved?ReplyLet me explain the Macassa circuit. The tower mill here was running in parallel with one of the ball mills. The feed entering the tertiary system is scalped in a primary cyclone. The finial cut is made in a secondary cyclone. The actual feed to the tower mill is the underflow from the two cyclones and was split to the ball mill and tower mill. During the testing we were unable to isolate the tower mill to determine its contribution to the overall system. We then started to look at the amount of material produced across the mill. We entered the mill at between 17% and 20% finished material and exiting at between 36% and 40% finished material. We were able to project, with a high efficiency classification system, and arrived at 6 Kwh/ton or better."

"Crystalline Flake Graphite is a strategic mineral. Since 1954 nearly all North American consumption has been imported from offshore. The Bouthillier Project in Quebec, Canada, is Orrwell Energy's bid to enter the market, with plans to begin production of a 500 TPD operation in 1984.Milling of flake graphite is considered easy, yet more problems have been encountered in flowsheet and plant design than in most other minerals. A fresh approach to existing technology was taken, giving results that are highly satisfactory. The key to graphite liberation without flake deterioration is found to be in autogeneous grinding. In addition to producing marketable coarse graphite by such autogeneous grinding, flotation and tabling, super purity fines can be produced using repeated regrinding, elutriation and flotation. This paper discusses the design of a 500 TPD plant based upon the results obtained from bench and pilot plant studies. INTROOUCTIONWhen the Black Oonald mine at Calabogie Ontario ceased production in 1954 nearly all North American crystalline flake graphite had to be imported from offshore. Orebodies in the United States were too small or too low in grade to be exploited economically.The Houthillier Township near Mont Laurier in Quebec (Figure 1) was a known graphite-bearing area The Orrwell property in that area was delineated in 1957 Some test work including minor footage of diamond drilling was carried out by Italia Copper and the MHM Syndicate prior to 1981 when Orrwell acquired the property"

"The mining industry is currently facing challenges with declining feed grades and is struggling to find solutions to improve the project’s economic value. By means of pre-concentration, ore sorting aims to separate the barren material from the valuable ore to reduce energy consumption and tailings generation, while increasing the feed grade, concentrate grade, mill recovery, and revenue. In addition, ore sorting allows the modification of deposit geometallurgy in order to allow the creation of an optimal mill feed.This paper evaluates the applicability and challenges of ore sorting by utilizing the results from four different mines, and reviews them in detail. The mines include two underground and two open pit mines that are base metal and precioius metal operations. In order to understand the applicability of ore sorting in these operations, initial rock-by-rock test results and different types of assays (atomic adsorption [AA], inductively coupled plasma [ICP], and fire assay) are utilized. Using the assay results, the grade recovery curves for ore sorting are generated and they are further improved by using and developing an ore sorting algorithm, which is discussed in this paper. The application and evaluation of ore sorting in greenfield and brownfield properties will also be discussed.The state of the art ore sorting technologies for both rock-by-rock and bulk sorting are reviewed in this paper. The future technologies on the horizon, including different combinations of sensors, are explained. The sorting technologies include, X-ray transmission (XRT), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), colour, infrared, electromagnetic, and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS).IntroductionOre sorting is a sensor-based sorting technique introduced between the excavation stage and processing stage, where the unwanted waste is diverted to the waste dump and only the ore is sent to the mill for further processing. As a result, the quality of the material entering the mill is improved and the dilution of the ore is reduced. In greenfield projects, sensor-based ore sorting provides an opportunity to reduce the capital cost of the project and increase the return on investment (ROI). With most operations currently facing the challenge of finding a high grade deposit, having a sorting unit provides several advantages while keeping the cost at minimum."

"Plant 2 at the Kinross Paracatu gold operation in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, was commissioned in late 2008. Designed to be the largest tonnage, lowest grade gold milling operation in the world, Plant 2’s throughput has steadily increased towards its design capacity of 5087 tons per hour.The plant employs a gold-specific flotation scheme to recover the majority of gold, which is present as discrete free gold particles. Additional gold is recovered by jigs in the grinding circuit, and the jig concentrates are reground, upgraded and subjected to intensive cyanide leaching. The flotation cleaner concentrate is reground and leached using a conventional CIL circuit.One year after start-up, with the plant stabilizing operationally, plant circuit surveys were completed by a joint team from Kinross Paracatu and Blue Coast Metallurgy Ltd. The surveys audited the flotation and concentrate treatment circuits to investigate the metallurgical performance.This paper describes the Plant 2 operation and how the surveys were designed and executed. Some of the quality control systems that were employed to provide meaningful data from such a low grade gold ore are described and findings and actions taken to improve metallurgy as a consequence of the surveys are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Paracatu mine is located two kilometres north of the city of Paracatu, in the north western portion of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, 230 km southeast of the national capital Brasília (shown in Figure 1). The present day Paracatu mining operation, fully owned by Kinross Gold, through its Brazilian subsidiary Rio Paracatu Mineração (RPM) is designed to be the largest tonnage, lowest grade free milling gold operation in the world.The deposit currently hosts some 1.2 billion tonnes of ore at a grade of ~0.41 g/t gold, hence contains a total gold reserve of over 20 million ounces. At a designed plant throughput rate of 61 Mt/year the mine life goes beyond 2030."

"At the end of 2010 the AMSA Esperanza Concentrator started commissioning. Located in the Atacama Desert this project is the first of several large size concentrators developed recently to operate in Northern Chile. In addition to the new operations to be implemented in the short term, many existing installations are planning expansions. The use of large size equipment is one of the common characteristics of the new concentrators, but also new technologies are being considered and innovation is present in most cases. Sea water or desalinated water will be required to process large tonnages of sulphide copper ores as well as gold bearing ores, since process water supply from the Andes will no longer be available. The high cost of sea water or desalinated water supply and the high cost of energy are not a limitation as the current metal market scenario allows obtaining an attractive NPV even from installations designed to process relatively low grade ores. A review of the current concentrators being developed in Chile is presented, including a description of the main design issues related to technology and innovation. An analysis of the Chilean mining industry is also presented, detailing mine and plant capacities as well as expected final products.INTRODUCTION The mining sector in Chile has become a reference when analysing the large concentrator plants projected or currently in operation all over the world. At present and as a consequence of the high price of metal commodities, most South American countries have an active mining sector. Chile is known as a major producer of metals. First records of copper production exported to Spain are dated to the early XVII century. Since then Chile has produced over 13% of the total copper ever produced in the world. After 1990 Chilean mining and the associated cluster of activities has substantially grown to levels never reached before, especially in the production of copper, gold and other non-metallic minerals. This dramatic increase is the result of an economic policy based on delivering comparative advantages and incentives for the admission of foreign capital to offset the weak domestic investment in previous decades. Massive mining of its huge mineral resources has allowed Chile to be a world leader in the production of copper and other base metals and mineral products."

"During the last two decades lamproites have joined kimberlites as the only two known primary sources of economic quantities of diamonds. This paper contrasts the petrography, primary and xenocrystic mineralogy and pipe geology of these petrogenetically separate rock types. The petrographic discrimination of kimberlites and lamproites from each other, as well as other rock types found during diamond prospecting, is discussed. Kimberlites and lamproites can be classified texturally and mineralogically. Such classifications highlight the differences between, and among, lamproites and kimberlites. The implications of these differences for diamond exploration programs are discussed, with particular emphasis on the application of petrography. IntroductionKimberlite was the term coined in the late 19th century to describe the host rock of diamond at the type locality, Kimberley, South Africa (Lewis, 1887, 1888). Innumerable kimberlites are now known worldwide; some of them contain economic quantities of diamond (e.g. South Africa, Botswana and Russia) while many are barren. Jennings (1989) suggests that less than 3% of the known kimberlites can be considered to be commercial. Kimberlite was thought to be the only important primary source of diamond for approximately a century. Until the late 1970s, lamproites were thought to be only academic curiosities. Some workers (e.g. Wade and Prider, 1940), however, did comment on certain similarities between lamproites and kimberlites and, hence, inferred a potential for lamproites to carry diamonds.The term lamproite was introduced by Niggli (1923) for leucite-bearing rocks from southeast Spain and Wyoming which had some unusual geochemical characteristics. Wade and Prider (1940) used the term lamproite (as defined by Troger, 1935) to embrace rock types found in the West Kimberley area of Western Australia. All the lamproites described by Wade and Prider (1940) form distinct topographic features. Subsequently in the late 1970s, additional pipes, which have little or no relief, were discovered in the same area, but only as the result of a major diamond exploration program (Atkinson et al., 1984; Jaques et al., 1984, 1986). Some of these bodies are diamondiferous. In 1979, the Argyle pipe was discovered in the East Kimberley area which, in terms of grade, is the richest known primary diamond deposit in the world with some parts of the body having grades greater than 500 carats/100 tonnes (Madigan, 1983; Boxer et al., 1989). "The Victor Diamond Mine is located in the James Bay lowlands, 90 km west of the First Nations village of Attawapiskat. The project was the first of its kind in northern Ontario and was completed approximately 9 months ahead of schedule.The Victor Mine process plant flowsheet was designed to produce a 95 - 98% by weight diamond concentrate. Main processing steps include 3 stages of comminution, dense medium separation and proprietary x-ray technology for final recovery. Reagent consumption for this process is limited to flocculant, for thickening of fine processed kimberlite, and FeSi for the dense medium separation.The commissioning phase of the Victor Project was executed over a period of 6 months and commenced prior to substantial completion of construction. The approach used was to focus on and complete commissioning of the higher risk dense medium separation and recovery systems prior to construction completion of up stream systems.INTRODUCTIONThe development of the Victor Diamond Mine took place over a period of approximately 5 years and had a capital cost of CAD997 million. It was a greenfields project in an undeveloped region of northern Ontario, only accessible by winter road. Figure 1, below, displays the location of the project within Ontario.The main stages of the project included feasibility, environmental permitting, engineering, construction, and commissioning. At the onset of the engineering phase, the mine was scheduled to enter production in October 2008. Through a team effort between AMEC and DeBeers Canada, the schedule was advanced by 6 months towards the goal of project completion in April 2008. Production status was attained in January 2008, approximately 9 months ahead of the original schedule. This paper focuses on the commissioning aspects of the project and includes a less detailed discussion of the engineering stage."

"Silver and gold leaching by cyanidation is a well-known process used around the world. This reaction is often accompanied by the leaching of other species throughtout the cyanidation circuit that causes the diversion of cyanide towards non valuable by-products (SCN-, Cu(CN)x, Fe(CN)x, etc.). One of the detrimental impacts of the formation of these by-products is the precipitation of silver-cyanide complexes that occurs when cyanide concentration is too low. Without any extra-addition of free cyanide, the precipitated silver is lost and cannot be recovered causing an important economic loss. To overcome silver precipitation, cyanidation circuits are often operated at higher cyanide concentrations. Recently, COREM’s research team has been working on a technology to measure and control silver precipitation during the cyanidation process. Moreover, a methodology has been elaborated in order to evaluate threshold cyanide level which corresponds to the cyanide concentration at which silver starts to precipitate. This technology has been tested on site on a real cyanidation circuit at Agnico Eagle’s LaRonde mine."
