The nature and the limits of validity of Darcy's law US applied to the flow of natural gas through reservoirs has been considered in order to resolve some controversial aspects of the effect of turbulence on pressure drops. The equivalence between various concepts and viewpoints advanced in the past by several investigators to explain how and why a gas well does not necessarily perform according to Darcy's law is shown. Starting with generalized equations of flow of fluids through porous media, a partial differential equation has been derived which accurately represents the flow at all rates. This equation has been numerically solved using an IBM 704 digital computer. The results permit plots of unsteady radial pressure distribution curves from which specific isochronal backpressure curves may be constructed. These back-pressure curves show the effect of the ,8 factor on the slope of the back-pressure curve. The calculations further indicate that the drainage radius for a gas well in turbulent flow propagates at a rate dependent upon the rate of production at the wellbore. This is quite different from the case with liquid flow or natural-gas flow in laminar regime. Additionally, the effect of reservoir inhomogeneities and crossflow between layers of different permeability on the back-pressure performance of gas wells has been conridered. In light of the current numerical results the significance and linlitation of the rate of flow function Y proposed by Smith" has been discussed. INTRODUCTION The relationship between the pressure drop and flow rate in problems of fluid flow through porous media is known to be affected by the nature of flow through the porous matrix. It has been observed by many that, for a range of flow rates, the pressure drop remains proportional to the rate of flow. When some flow rate is reached, however, it is usually observed that the pressure drop gradually begins to increase more than proportionally to the flow rate. It is well known that this phenomenon was first observed by Osborne Reynolds in 1901 in experimenting with flow through pipes. In his classical experiments, Reynolds made visual observations on the condition of streamlines evidenced by injecting a dye into water flowing through glass tubes. In these experiments, the abrupt transition between steady, "streamline, laminar" flow and unsteady random turbulent flow was found to be a function of the dimensionless group (Dvp/u), now known as the Reynolds number. During these experiments, in addition to observations on the nature of flow regimes, the proportionality between flow rate and pressure drop in laminar flow was contrasted with the nonlinearity between these variables in turbulent flow. Fancher and Lewis' reported data on various consolidated and unconsolidated sands in 1933. Their conclusions were that ". . . the flow of fluids through these porous materials closely resembles that through pipes; that there is a condition of flow in porous systems which resembles viscous flow, another which corresponds to turbulent; that the change from one type to the other takes place at a definite and reproducible condition for each system". In 1947, Brownell and Katz published a method to predict the laminar and turbulent flow behavior from the particle size, bed porosity and the particle sphericity, employing the friction factor-Reynolds number charts for pipes. Several investigators have verified the work of Fancher, Lewis and Barnes and presented their data as friction factor-vs-Reynolds number plots.' The equation which would represent the pressure gradient over the whole range of velocity must have an added term over that represented by Darcy's law. Accordingly, the pressure gradient necessary to sustain flow at the velocity (v) through a porous medium may be represented by the following equation, suggested by Forscheimer." The nature and the range of validity of Darcy's law has been the subject of studies by many investigators over the past years. THE structure of anodic films formed on aluminum and other metals under varied conditions is not well known despite the wide use of such films both as protective coatings and as the dielectric medium in elec-trolytic condensers. The present work was undertaken as a survey of the possibilities of electron diffraction in the investigation of anodic films, especially in comparing the properties of anodic films formed under dif-ferent sets of conditions and subjected to various subsequent treatments. In addition, an effort has been made to compare surface films formed on aluminum by anodic treatment with surface films formed by heating, immersion in chemicals, etc, The electron diffraction method in many cases has been successfully applied to the study of thin surface films. Its principal advantage is that it can be used without removing the films from the base material upon which they have been formed. The low penetrating power of electrons, in the "reflection" diffraction method which has been used in this work, prevents the appearance of diffraction patterns from substances at depths greater than about 100 Angstrom units (10-6 cm.). Different investigations of the structure of anodic films have shown widely varying results, depending on the methods used in preparing the films. Apparently under some conditions these films are crystalline and under other conditions they are amorphous, and it has been difficult to say which type of structure will be found in any particular case. This paper is abstracted from the report of the Appraisement Committee of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, of which the writer was Chairman. The other members of the committee were M. V. McQuigg and R. S. Haseltine. To Thomas Cox, engineer in charge of the investigation, and to his efficient staff of assistants, is due the credit for the detail work necessary in carrying out the plan of the Committee. It treats only of the valuation of the lands, wells, and piping, without going into details of equipment and other features. It was recognized, early in the operation, that the value of oil lands was the value of oil ,to be extracted and marketed, less the costs attendant thereon. Referring this back to the costs in cents per barrel, it became obvious that surface improvements, absolutely necessary in the production of oil, from wells then drilled, had no separate and independent value aside from the value of the land, but that any excess equipment, not necessary for the production of oil from present wells, such as drilling tools, well casing, etc., should be given a present condition value. In valuing the properties of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, the Committee has considered the following facts: 1. That from each property there will ultimately be produced a certain total quantity of oil. 2. That in the production of that oil a certain total quantity of money will be expended. 3. That a certain total amount of money will be received from the oil. 4. That the total net receipts will be the total gross receipts less the cost of development and production. 5. That the present value of the net receipts must be such an amount that when invested by a purchaser it will be returned with 8 per cent, interest additional during the life of the property. The initial procedure consisted in making a general reconnaissance of the entire district in which the property was located and determining the lithological and structural conditions underlying the area. THERE is one problem of the new administration that has received the attention and thought of the organized engineers of America for many years past. This is the problem of the reorganization of the Federal Government. The, inadequacy, the wastefulness, and the inefficiency of our federal organization was evident, enough under pre-war conditions. These inadequacies, these inefficiencies, these wastes were exhibited to the country during the war at the cost of millions. Congress has placed the problem in the hands of a very able Congressional Joint Committee, but if this Joint Committee succeeds in securing the imminently necessary results it will only be by full insistent support to it by public opinion. Many attempts have been made at reorganization before but all, of them have gone to the same crematory-the interminable differences in opinion among the executive and legislative officials over details.

STEADY advance has been made in the art of lead smelting and refining during the year. The bringing of natural gas to the Salt Lake valley has led to its adaptation to lead smelting operations. The Tooele plant of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. has put into practice the high blast pressure and constant volume for lead blast furnaces, which we understand was first advanced by John F. Austin. It would appear that within limits, capacity is nearly proportional to the volume of air. If the charge is dense, a constant pressure, as in the old practice. did not get much air through the charge and the furnace slowed up. The constant volume idea makes the charge smelt at the same rate as if the charge were porous. The cost of a little additional power insures capacity operation at all times.

The seismic refraction technique is probably the most popular geophysical method of bedrock profiling in geotechnical site investigations but is somewhat restricted by the inherent assumptions in the method. This paper describes how Hales' method of profile interpretation is modified to overcome the assumptions of increasing velocity and layer thickness with depth when only first arrival data is available. A further expansion of Hales' method enables presentation of refraction data in a form whereby bedrock features, such as changes in velocity, relief and dip in particular, are more readily recognized. Characteristic curves of the more common bedrock features are presented as an aid to bedrock feature recognition.

McGeorge of Mountain States Mineral Enterprises, Inc., reviewed the general overall financial aspects and methods of raising the necessary capital for developing the mine. In Part 2 of this two-article series, we will present several case histories to show how realistic feasibility studies are used for evaluating the choices and options entailed in mining ventures. Basically, after a potential ore body has been discovered, and the necessary funds obtained for the development of the deposit, the next major problem is one of ascertaining what specifically is to be produced, and the costs of production. The profit potential of the mining venture can then be accurately assessed by the mine owner, operator, or loan officer.

BECAUSE of the wide-spread publicity given to Nylon yarn as being made from ?coal, air, and water,? the general public has become conscious of the nonfuel uses of bituminous coal. Some of these uses are as filler for fertilizer, carbon for the absorption of orders, for water supply, and for the bedding of cattle. Spectacular as are these accomplishments the fact is that only a small amount of coal is used for nonfuel purposes. It is on the utilization of coal as fuel that the industry depends. Practically all the coal mines for years to come will be used for making coke for the generation of heat. Recently much attention has been paid to the significance of ash in coal. Another study worthy the interest of metallurgists in the iron and steel industries if that of Dr, Lowry of the Carnegie Institute of Technology relative to the percentage of sulphur in coal and coke.

A number of reservoirs have been partially invaded by bottom water. Water flooding such reservoirs can be especially inefficient if the oil has a high viscosity because injected water will under-run the oil and emerge at producing wells without having displaced much oil. A possible means of improving water sweep efficiency would be to precede the water flood with a slug of water purposely thickened with a chemical additive. This possibility has been studied with a scaled laboratory flow model. The investigation was carried out on a model representing a 20-acre five-spot with one set of reservoir condition~. Displacements were performed with water, with viscous-water slugs of 10 and 25 per cent of the pore volume followed by water, and with all viscous water. Displacement tests were made at several rates of injection. For all cases, compared at the same producing water-oil ratio, an increase in rate resulted in an increase in volumetric sweep. The larger the quantity of viscous slug injected, the greater the crossflow of oil ahead of the displacing front and, thus, the lower the WOR during that period of a displacement. This investigation indicates that the injection of aqueous viscous slugs in this type of system would give some additional benefit over conventional flooding by (I) reducing the life of the flood, (2) reducing lifting costs and (3) increasing ultimate recovery. The benefits of a viscous-slug displacement would warrant its use if the viscous water could be created for a few cents per barrel. INTRODUCTION The most appropriate method for water flooding oil reservoirs which have been partially invaded by bottom water has been a problem of considerable interest. Such reservoirs, having good vertical permeability and unfavorable mobility ratios, are difficult to produce efficiently under normal waterflood procedures. Even though the injection wells have been plugged back above the oil-water contact and the water zone has been squeezed off, injection water will enter the formation and not only displace oil, but also much of it will displace the bottom water, thus creating a high producing water-oil ratio at the start of a flood (see Fig. 1). Since the rate of injection and the viscosity of the displacing fluid are the more easily controlled physical parameters of the reservoir, it is quite natural to study their effects on the volumetric sweep of the oil zone and on the producing water-oil ratio. Increasing the viscosity of the displacing fluid has two disadvantages—it reduces the maximum rate of injection into the reservoir, and it costs more than water. It was thought that the injection of a viscous-fluid slug, followed by water, would minimize these two disadvantages, increase the volumetric sweep of the oil zone and reduce the producing water-oil ratio. Water with an additive to increase viscosity would probably be the most effective. The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine the feasibility of injecting viscous-water slugs followed by water to improve or hasten oil recovery while reducing the producing water-oil ratios. The effect of injection rate upon recovery was also investigated. A laboratory model, scaled to a 20-acre five-spot prototype with one set of reservoir conditions, was constructed. Laboratory studies of displacements with (1) water, (2) viscous-water slugs of 10 and 25 per cent of the pore volume followed by water and (3) all viscous water were performed at several rates of injection. The Fresnillo Company's mill at Fresnillo, State of Zacatecas, Mexico, treats oxide ores from the Fresnillo mine, dump ores and underground ores from the Plateros district, company leases and custom ores from the Zacatecas district, custom ores from other districts and tailings from old dumps at Fresnillo. The normal capacity of the mill is approximately 2600 dry short tons per 24 hours (a ton of 2000 lb.). The final product of the mill is a precipitate containing gold and silver, which is smelted and shipped as doré bullion to the refinery of the Compania Minera de Penoles, S.A., at Monterrey, State of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The geology of the district was described in 1923, by T. C. Baker,' from whose paper the following data have been taken: The mineralization of the district was effected in the Tertiary period, following the intrusions and preceding the appearance of the flows. The area within which productive veins have been found is 1 mile long by 1/2 mile wide. The important units of each of the four general fracture systems meet in the central portion of Proano hill, which is an outcrop of graywacke, and where the rock was also intensely fractured by subsidiary movements, resulting in a shattered zone 1200 ft. long by 400 ft. wide. The mineralization was more intense in the immediate vicinity of the principal channels through which the solutions rose. The valuable metals are silver and gold, the ratio by weight of the former to the latter being 1000 to 1.5. Argentite is the predominant silver mineral, and is associated with pyrite and manganese mineral. The sulfides are primary throughout. A slight secondary action is represented by small quantities of native silver and silver halides, principally cerargyrite, which are found in the upper part of the mine. Oxidation has penetrated with great thoroughness to the lowest horizon so far exposed, this being 420 ft. below the present ground-water level. THE strike and dip of bedded formations is readily determined by trigonometry if some marker horizon is intercepted by three holes. If no marker can be identified and if orientation of the cores is unknown, as is the usual case in diamond drilling, the determination still can be made readily by the use of a stereonet if the bearing, inclination, and angle the bedding makes with the core axis is known for each of the three holes. Such determination, valid only if the bedding orientation is fairly uniform within the area drilled, is considered simpler, faster, and more effective than any solution previously published. Method: The steps of this procedure are as follows: 1) Mark north and south poles on tracing paper placed over stereonet.* 2) Plot the three diamond drillholes by drawing a line from the center of the net in the direction of the bearings of the holes. Then rotate the paper until each line, in turn, lies along the equatorial diameter of the net; the end of each line is determined by the inclination of the hole measured in degrees from the periphery toward the center of the net along the equatorial diameter. Fig. 1 illustrates a vertical hole and a hole inclined at —23" due east. 3) With the projection of one diamond drillhole along the equatorial diameter, measure from the end of the hole, to the east and then to the west, a dis- tance in degrees equal to the core axis-bedding plane angle. Find two more points by measuring the same number of degrees north then south along the great circle from the end of the drillhole. Draw a circle, the center somewhere along the direction of the projection of the drillhole, to connect these four points. Draw circles for the other two diamond drillholes in the same manner. See Fig. 1 for two circles representing core axis-bedding plane angles of 35" and 23" and Fig. 2 for these plus a third circle representing a core axis-bedding angle of 42" in a hole bearing S 50 W inclined at —52". 4) Rotate the tracing paper until one great circle on the stereonet is found which is tangent to all three of the circles or parts of circles derived in the previous step. Trace this great circle on the paper and join its ends with a straight line passing through the center of the net. The bearing of this line is the strike of the bedding. In Fig. 2 the bedding strikes N 77 E. 5) Rotate the paper until the strike is along the polar diameter of the net. The dip of the bedding is determined by measuring along the equatorial diameter the distance in degrees from the periphery of the net to the great circle derived in step 4. The dip of plane illustrated in Fig. 2 is 55" to the N 13 W. Fig. 3 indicates the solution for three holes whose bearings and inclinations are N 20 W and —43o, due E and —30°, S 30 W and 23" with core axis-bedding angles of 30°, 50°, and 43" respectively. The bedding (stippled area) strikes N 44 W and dips 70" to the southwest.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE aim of instruction in a metallurgical laboratory is to make real the principles on which metallurgical processes and operations are based, and to foster the spirit of investigation: The materials with which experiments are carried out are ores, metals, and metallic compounds. The method varies with the end sought. A class may work as a whole, each member contributing his share to the solution of a problem, or the students may carry on investigations independently; the former exemplifies class-research; the latter, individual research. It is with a branch of the former, with special reference to ore-treatment that the present paper intends to deal. In smelting an ore by a well-established process, the result is shown by analyzing the products to see whether their compositions correspond to those calculated in making up the charge; by taking account of stock to show the distribution of metal in the different products made and the losses from dust and volatilization, by casting a thermal balance to find the ,distribution and losses of heat; and by making a cost-sheet to ascertain, as far as possible, the necessary outlay of money. In, lixiviation and amalgamation, the mode of operating has to be varied to adapt a process to the individual ore. Here a number of tests become necessary. Each will consist of a series of experiments with one variable, in order to find the conditions under which the variable gives the best result; a. summary of several tests will give the best method of operating.. THE morphology and mechanism of the proeutectoid a and the eutectoid reactions have been recently investigated in some detail in an iodide-base Ti—7.22 pct Cr alloy.' These studies have now been extended to an iodide-base Ti—10.8 pct Cr alloy in order to evaluate the effects of composition on the proeutectoid and eutectoid transformations in titanium-chromium alloys. The alloy used in this investigation had the following composition: 10.8 Cr, 0.0327 0, 0.011 N, 0.0063 H, and 0.011 pct C. All facets of ball sealer behavior must be known and understood to design for their optimum use in well treatments. The down-hole factors including the inertial forces, drag forces and holding forces have been discussed. Equations have been developed and presented for these forces. The use of these equations in this process will contribute to the most efficient use of an economical and proven ball sealer process. The urocedure presented has been used to successfully analyze field results indicating problems involving the use of ball sealers. These problems have been isolated and corrected in future treatments by using the procedure presented to revise the perforating program, the injection rate, the design of ball sealer stages and/or the type and size of ball sealers. The procedure presented also indicates that dislodgement of ball sealers occurs primarily in ultra slim-hole completions. INTRODUCTION The perforation sealing process has been proven highly successful and economical since it was introduced to the oil and gas industry in early 1956.' Since it has proved so successful in multistage fracture treatments at a much lower cost than conventional packers, the ball sealer process has become a byword in well completions.' Not only has it changed the design of fracture treatments, it has changed the concepts of selectively perforating and has greatly aided the success of the single-point and limited-entry techniques." Yet with all the advantages, there are still facets of ball sealer behavior that are not widely recognized. These must be known and understood to better design and execute the optimum ball sealer treatment. The down-hole behavior of ball sealers is influenced by a number of factors including an "inertial force", a "drag force" and a "holding force". These are considered in two phases—the initial seating of the ball and the forces tending to unseat the ball after contact has been made (see Fig. 1). This paper presents a theoretical study of these factors and formulas for predicting their influence. The authors acknowledge the fact that the flow equations presented herein describe the behavior of Newtonian fluids and do not cover the so-called power-law fluids. The assumptions made, however, are reasonable and well within practical limitations of the conditions encountered during field application. For example, it is assumed that the perforations are round with a discharge coefficient of 0.82. While this may not be exactly true, it has been verified within practical field limitations.' The discharge coefficient would not vary significantly even if the perforation size or configuration varied pronouncedly. The approach of assuming uniform perforation size is not as strained as it might first appear. Normally, a perforator contains charges equally spaced with the same number in each vertical (or horizontal) plane. If the perforating gun is not centralized, the holes in one plane will be smaller than average, while the holes in opposing planes will tend to be larger than average. The net result is that the two effects tend to balance. FACTORS AFFECTING CONTACT WITH PERFORATlON Ball sealers are injected into well treating fluids for the purpose of contacting and sealing those perforations which are accepting the fluid flow. The efficiency of the sealers is primarily influenced by: (1) the velocity of the balls down the pipe, and (2) the fluid velocity through the perforations. To divert the sealer to the perforation, the inertial force of the ball must be overcome by the drag force created by the fluid velocity through the perforation. The Hiawatha mine, a producer of iron ore, is near the City of Iron River, in Iron County, Michigan. This mine, operated by The M. A. Hanna Co., has been chosen by the author as a typical iron mine in this district that is using the cut-and-fill mining system. General Geology The Hiawatha ore body lies along the steeply dipping north limb of a syncline that closes around on the east end to form a bathtub-shaped structure. Throughout this major structure there are very many smaller wrinkles or folds, which vary the direction as well as the thickness of the ore body. The total length of the ore formation with minor interruptions so far developed is about 3600 ft. The ore body throughout the entire present depth of 2000 ft. has averaged approximately 40 ft. in thickness; it is somewhat narrower at the upper levels and shows a marked increase in thickness on the bottom levels. This increase in thickness probably indicates that the bottom of the trough is near or that a major monoclinal fold has been encountered, which flattens the ore and gives apparent horizontal thickening. The footwall of this ore body is generally a black, graphitic slate, very rich in iron sulphides, quite combustible when exposed to air, and very treacherous to handle during mining operations. The hanging wall, in most places, is a cherty, fairly hard iron formation, and in general stands quite well ill open stopes. There are places, however, where black slate is found in both the hanging wall and the footwall, which makes mining difficult, as the black slate tends to slough off after being exposed to air. In these places it becomes necessary to leave a scale of ore 5 to 6 ft. thick on both hanging wall and footwall, which is not recovered. Fig. I shows a typical vertical cross section through the Hiawatha ore body. Type of Stoping Because of the size and shape of the ore body and the hard, dense structure of the ore, sublevel stoping has been an efficient and economical method of extracting the ore. This method, with various minor changes, has been used since the mine was opened in 1893. There have never been any stope-filling operations, however, until recent years, when crushing of pillars and black-slate fires forced the issue and methods were arrived at to fill all stopes. Development of Deeper Levels Shaft sinking to deeper levels in development operations has been done successfully by two methods without interference or hindrance to production. These systems are: I. Sinking an auxiliary winze a short distance from the shaft, then drifting back to the shaft location and putting up a pilot raise through to the bottom of the shaft. This raise is always in the manway compartment of the shaft, so that no work is ever done under a cage or skip. A 20-ft.

The regular activities of the Institute are financed mainly by income derived from members' dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the amount of these endowments totals more than $684,000. An active effort is being made to increase the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which Henry Krumb is Chairman, and of which the other members are: George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, John V. N. Dorr, Howard N. Eavenson, D. %. Jack- ling, Harvey S. Mudd, Wallace E. Pratt, Milnor Roberts, and Wilfred Sykes. This committee believes that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of evergrowing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light.
