In preparing a well for pumping, observations are often made of the fluid level in the well bore or bottom-hole pressures at various times before equilibrium has set in. From a qualitative point of view one may immediately infer that if the rise in the bottom-hole pressure or fluid level is rapid the permeability of the sand about the well bore is large, and converse conclusions may be drawn if the rise is slow. However, a more quantitative estimate will give additional information of value, as will be shown in this paper. To derive such an estimate we may proceed as follows. Let h be the fluid height, above the sand face, at time t, and let yo be the average density of the fluid that enters the bore. The bottom-hole pressure, for a fluid height h will therefore be p = rogh, neglecting, of course, the friction drop in the well bore, while the fluid is rising, as may be justifiably done for most pumping wells. If a is the free area of the open-flow string—assumed to be uniform— the rate of production from the sand during the rise of fluid will be: where the last part of the equation merely indicates that, in general, the production rate Q must be considered as a function of the back pressure, and is determined by it alone. In fact, equation 1 shows that if the rate of rise of the pressure or fluid level is determined as a function of the height of rise, or p, for a number of values of the latter, this functional relation between Q and p will be immediately given. Conversely, if we know this functional relation, the rate of increase of p or h may be predicted, or, by observing the rate of rise of p or h some of the constants of the sand may be determined. THANKS to the excellent preliminary work of: the Division officers and the local committee the fall meeting of the Coal Division at Bluefields was a brilliant success. West Virginia was at its best with its beautiful mountains, good roads and foliage, just beginning to turn to autumn colors. The meeting began on time and was kept on time throughout. The papers were-well prepared and, being on subjects of live interest, provoked 'lively discussion. One factor in bringing this about was that they were not too numerous and that with one exception copies had been submitted in advance a sufficient time to permit of them having been studied. The Friday morning session was presided over by John .J. Lincoln of the Crozier Coal and Coke Co. and president of the Pocahontas Coal Operators Association. After brief announcements by Thomas H. Clagett, chairman of the local committee, regarding plans for the two day's involved, and by Howard N. Eavenson, chairman of the Division, the reading of papers was taken up.

THE first pump of this character, made by H. R. Worthington, and, so far as the writer is informed, the first and only one of this kind ever constructed, is now in daily use in the above-named works. The water-pressure necessary for the working of the hydraulic machinery of this plant had been supplied, up to the time of the building of this pump, by two Worthington Duplex High Pressure Pumps, having steam-cylinders of 20 inches diameter and 12-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 72 inches diameter; eight inlet and eight outlet valves of 22 inches diameter, and pumping into a 6-inch pipe. These pumps required a large amount of steam, and, in consequence of the various additions to their duty, their capacity became far short of the work required. In preference to putting in another engine of the same class, it was decided to accept Mr. Worthington's proposition to build the compound one under description, he guaranteeing that it should be equal to the demands of the works, and at the same time cause a saving of from 5 to 6 tons of coal per day from the amount required to run the two old pumps. The new engine has been in operation about one month, and so far has exceeded the most sanguine expectations. It consists of two high-pressure cylinders of 21 inches and two low-pressure ones of 36g inches diameter, by 36-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 91 inches diameter. There are two air-pumps of 20 inches diameter by 18-inch stroke; the condenser being 24 inches diameter by 60 inches high. Both cylinders are jacketed with wood and felt, and the low-pressure cylinder also with live steam. The high and low pressure steam-cylinders are in line and immediately adjoining each other, while the inconveniences attending an internal stuffing-box are avoided by having two piston-rods for each of the low-pressure cylinders, running through stuffing-boxes on the outside of the smaller high-pressure ones. An explanation is advanced for the recent results of Barrett and Sherby on the high-temperature creep of fee metals. Their measurements indicate that metals with a low stacking fault energy creep at a much slower rate than metals with a high stacking fault energy. The explanation is based on the assumption that the rate of core diffusion is much smaller in partial dislocations than in perfect dislocations. An experiment is suggested to test this assumption. The explanation also requires that the jog density is small on widely split dislocations. SHERBY and Barrett1,2 recently established an important result in the field of high-temperature steady-state creep. They have shown that fee metals whose dislocations split into partial dislocations separated by a wide stacking-fault ribbon creep at a much slower rate than fee metals whose dislocations are not split appreciably. The creep rates in the two cases may differ by a factor as high as 6000. (For the purpose of comparison, the test temperature of each metal was chosen so that its rate of self-diffusion was equal to a standard value. Similarly the stress levels were such that the ratio of the stress to an appropriate elastic modulus was the same for each metal. In all cases the stresses were sufficiently low that the steady-state creep rate was proportional to the stress raised to a power.) It is the purpose of the present paper to attempt an explanation of this interesting and significant result of Sherby and Barrett. The activation energies of high-temperature creep of the metals tested by Sherby and Barrett (aluminum, nickel, copper, and silver) were equal to their self-diffusion activation energies. Hence it appears reasonable to assume that this type of creep is controlled by a dislocation-climb process, which in turn is controlled by the diffusion of vacancies to or from dislocation lines. (It will be assumed that the diffusion of interstitial atoms is unimportant in the climb process. The analysis could be repeated for the case in which interstitial atoms are important.) In prior papers374 I have treated dislocation climb by using the assumptions that core diffusion is extremely fast down a dislocation and that a dislocation always maintains an appropriate vacancy concentration in its immediate vicinity. IT is well known that iron markedly improves the physical properties and casting characteristics of aluminum bronzes. The use of 1 to 4 per cent iron as the principal modifying addition has become common practice in many foundries melting aluminum bronzes. Although the beneficial effects of iron are unquestioned, there is some uncertainty regarding the structural changes caused by it in the basic copper-alumi-num system. It is agreed that a new constituent appears in abundance when the iron content reaches 2 to 4 per cent. This constituent, which frequently occurs in shapes resembling clover leaves, is sometimes assumed to be an aluminum-iron intermetallic compound. If this were correct we might expect a change in the structural relationships of the matrix in the direction of decreased aluminum content. On the other hand, it has been reported that iron has a negligible effect in altering the fundamental relationships of copper-aluminum alloys1. Others2,3 have reported an additive coefficient. Apparently it will be necessary to know the equilibrium relationships between the phases of the copper-aluminum-iron alloy system to establish any such theory as fact. When this has been done it may very well be that a further revision in the structural relationships may be necessary to describe the changes to be expected in commercial cast alloys. THE effect of cold-working upon electrical conductivity of copper and of copper alloys appears not to be generally known in detail Although several papers on the subject have been presented, showing variable effects according to alloy composition, it is often assumed that the 2 to 3 per cent lowering of the conductivity of ordinary tough-pitch copper by severe cold-working is typical for copper alloys Because of this situation it was decided to carry out the present work upon several types of copper, copper-zinc alloys over the commercial range of brasses, other binary alloys, and numerous age-hardening alloys in the quenched, and quenched and aged conditions The large number of alloys investigated made it impossible to study every one in the detail it may have merited Inasmuch as several interesting points that could not be satisfactorily explained came to light, further work is contemplated by the authors It is usually considered that the normal effect of cold-work on ductile metals and unordered alloys is to decrease conductivity slightly In alloys that are in the ordered state, as annealed or otherwise heat-treated, cold-working tends to disorder the structure, resulting in very marked lowering of conductivity The random state of atomic arrangement produces lower conductivity than the ordered state for the same composition 1 PREVIOUS WORK previous work in the authors' laboratory has shown the electrical conductivity of several copper alloys to be decreased by greater amounts than might have been expected, in view of the general knowledge on the subject, when cold-worked Guillet and Ballay2 investigated the influence of cold-work upon the resistivity of several metals and alloys, including copper and some copper alloys The increase of resistivity due to severe working was less than 4 per cent for all pure metals tested, while the increases for the alloys were generally higher In the copper-zinc alloys, they found that the increase of resistance due to drawing increased with zinc content, and reported a 21 7 per cent increase of resistance for an alloy containing 67 9 per cent Cu as severely worked Masima and Sachs3 studied the change in electrical resistance of three brass crystals when stretched in the tensile test, obtaining increases in resistance of the order of 3 per cent for 30 to 40 per cent reduction of area of the specimens The resistance decreased again when the cold-worked crystals were subsequently annealed Bardenheuer and Schmidt4 found that the conductivity of copper was decreased by 3 to 4 per cent when reduced 50 per cent by working The conductivity of 72-28

IT has been customary at our opening sessions, for the presiding officer to address you on the general development of one or another of our several professions, or upon some important feature of Mining or Metallurgical Engineering. It is somewhat embarrassing to his successor that our former President, Dr. Raymond, expert as he is in every one of these professions, has been accustomed to keep them all, in their turn, prominently before you. In selecting for this occasion a subject necessarily connected with iron and steel, I have thought that a review of these manufactures, with reference to some of their more pressing needs for improvement, will be more timely than a general or statistical paper. I shall endeavor to confine my remarks to a few specific defects of practice and management, and to their equally specific and more or less developed remedies. That serious defects exist ; that they must be remedied ; that the manufacture is indeed already on the verge of transition, will be generally admitted. But it cannot be revolutionized all at once, however desirable the technical results might be, for that would bankrupt the business at large. We cannot afford to pull down and rebuild all our blast-furnaces that do not make a ton of pig iron with 25 cwt. of fuel ; nor to replace all our hand-puddling furnaces with revolving ones, even if we could select the best revolver. Although the soft steels promise to supplant iron for most structural purposes, there are neither money nor present market to warrant all at once replacing our iron works, or half of them, with steel works. Since, then, these manufactures can neither standstill nor be suddenly metamorphosed, their managers are saying to one another " We must feel our way into larger development ; we must work gradually into better practice; we must improve a little at a time." * President's address on the opening of the Cleveland meeting.

ABSTRACT investigations in recent years have shown that rock wettability can exert a profound influence on the displacement of oil by water from oil producing reservoirs. Core analyses frequently show oil recoveries from preferentially water-wet rock to be significantly greater than those from preferentially oil-wet rock. Thus, an accurate prediction of water-drive or waterflood oil recovery is dependent on the evaluation of reservoir rock wettability. Laboratory and field studies have been undertaken to examine and develop methods which may be used to measure rock wettahililiy, to investigate factors which may alter the wettability of reservoir rock, and to determine the wettability of specific reservoirs. It has been found that measurement of the rate and volume of spontaneous imbibition of the wet-ting phase by a rock is a reliable and reproducible test for semi-quantitarive determination of preferential rock wettability. Laboratory tests have shown that the wettability of reservoir rock may depend on both the crude oil composition and the rock type. Field and laboratory tests have indicated that coring flulids and core handling techniques can cause significant changes in the wettability of rock surfaces. However, a few fluids, brine in particular, appear not to affect core wettability and may be used when coring to determine reservoir wettability. Core handling and packing procedures have been developed which preserve core wettability during storage and laboratory testing. The wetfability characteristics of six reservoirs have been evaluated by wettabilify tests performed in the field on fresh cores cut with brine or special water-base muds. The tests indicated that all six reservoirs are water wet; however, the de-gree differed from one reservoir to another. INTRODUCTION Although surface properties of reservoir rock and interfacial characteristics of rock, crude oil, and water systems have been discussed for many years, the full significance of these properties to the production of oil is still in the process of evaluation. It is known, however, that one surface characteristic—preferential wettability of the reservoir rock—-is of paramount importance when the reservoir is being produced by water-flood or water-drive mechanisms. The importance of rock wettability has been pointed out by several authors'.',%* who have found that pref- erentially water-wet cores flood more efficiently than oil-wet cores; that is, more oil is recovered from water-wet cores in the early flooding stages than from oil-wet cores. Other authors'," indicate that waterflood oil recovery from cores of intermediate wettability may be greater than that from either strongly water-wet or strongly oil-wet cores. These recent investigations emphasize that the true wettability of a reservoir must be known before the performance of waterflood or water-drive reservoirs can be accurately evaluated. When reservoir wettability is to be determined by core analysis, precautions must be taken to maintain the original wettability which can be altered readily during coring5 nd testing.' In the coring operation the core may be partially or completely penetrated by the drilling fluid which, if it contains surface active materials, may drastically change the wettability of the core. Also, improper core handling during stcrage and testing may change its wettability because of evaporation of fluids or exposure to oxygen or surface active contaminants. One purpose of this paper is to discuss methods for obtaining, preserving, and testing cores without altering their original wettability. In addition, the results of wettability tests on fresh and preserved cores from six reservoirs are presented where special precautions were taken to obtain samples without altering their wettability during the coring operation.

High angle conveyor (HA C) systems in open-¬pit mining offer many advantages over the traditional, truck only, haulage systems. These include superior energy efficiency, less dependency on petroleum products, less sensitivity to inflation, less excavation for the amount of ore recovered, and less ramp construction and maintenance costs. Various high angle conveying systems and the corresponding characteristics of the high angle conveyor are illustrated. Discussion includes the range of HAC systems from the low capacity (up to 1.8 kt/h or 2000 stph), low lift (10.7 to 36.6 m or 35 to 120 ft), continuously mobile to the moderate capacity (1.8 to 3.6 kt/h or 2000 to 4000 stph), moderate lift (36.6 to 76.2 m or 120 to 250 ft), intermittently mobile to the high capacity (greater than 3.6 kt/h or 4000 stph), high lift (greater than 76.2 m or 250 ft), semimobile. Combinations of the above as required for the various open-pit mining operations are also discussed.

THE mine and plant of the United Verde Copper Co., located in Yav-api County, at Jerome, Arizona, have been described in various technical publications and, therefore, a brief outline of its essential features will suffice. The orebodies are of the schist replacement type, the main sulfide mass being a large lens-shaped body approximately 7 acres in cross-sectional area. In general, the mineralization is found along the iron-schist contact, with the orebodies extending about 1000 ft. along this contact and varying from a few feet to 250 ft. in width. The mine is located on a mountain slope and has openings into it on three horizons, as follows: 1. Raises and ore passes open vertically into the shovel pit. These extend down to the 1000-ft. level, where they terminate as loading bins in the Hopewell adit. The main fan intake air shaft, which also extends vertically down to the 1000-ft. level, has its surface opening on the hillside at the extreme north end of the shovel pit, and the main mine air return exhausts through a raise at the extreme south end of the shovel pit. 2. The 500-ft. level adit. 3. The Hopewell adit on the 1000-ft. level. The mine has a vertical downward extent of 2000 ft. below the 1000-ft. level. Underground operations are carried on through two main shafts, both of which are wholly underground. Shaft 5 is the ore-hoisting shaft. It has three compartments and extends from the 800 to the 3150-ft. level. Shaft 6 is the service shaft, and is used for lowering and hoisting men and material. It has a large cage compartment and three smaller compartments for counterweights, ladderway, and pipe and power lines. This shaft extends from the 500 to the 2550-ft. level, and is now being extended to the 3000-ft. level. An air shaft for the downward movement of fresh air from the fan has been provided, and extends to the 2550-ft. level at this time. Work has been started to extend this air shaft to the 3000-ft. level. A return airway for vitiated mine air, in the form of raises and short connecting drifts, extends downward to the 2100-ft. level. The underground mining operations extend from the 300 to the 3000-ft. level. There are about 45 stopes in active operation on the 17 levels

Numerous papers have been published on the use of graphic methods for determining the best curve for estimating the production decline of oil wells but, as far as the writer has been able to ascertain, nothing has been published showing how curves may be worked out mathematically that will conform most closely to the production data under consideration in any given instance; hence the writer has endeavored to show just how such application can be made. Among the valuation engineers, two types of curves are in current use for the representation of the decline in production of oil wells. One may be represented by the equation, y = krx; this is sometimes known as a percentage curve, for the production for any period is multiplied by a constant rate or percentage to obtain the production for the succeeding period. It appears as a straight line on semilogarithmic cross-section paper. The other curve may be represented by the equation, y = kxn, and is shown as a straight line on logarithmic cross-section paper. In each equation, y represents the number of barrels produced in a given period of time, and x the successive periods of time. The other letters are constants to be determined for each well, or group of wells considered in arriving at the most probable curve to represent the rate of production for a given property. From this the underground reserves may be estimated by extrapolation, or by extending the curve beyond the last known period of production to show the most probable production values for the future. Application to the Burbank Pool Fig. 1 relates to a property in the Burbank Pool, Osage County, Okla. The production is shown as an average per well per month, is plotted to the vertical scale of barrels on the left-hand margin and to the horizontal scale of months at the bottom of the chart. In column y, the number of barrels is listed beginning with May, 1922, as the first month on which to base a decline curve. The type of curve used is of the form, y = krx, or, expressed in logarithms, log y = log k + x log r, in which log k and log r are constants to be determined so that the curve will most closely approximate the production data given.

INTRODUCTION One cannot discuss the subject of "Raising Capital in the 1990s" without having a crystal ball and a reliable fortune teller. This discusses "Raising Capital for the 1990sW, which is what Metal1 Mining Corporation did in 1987. We raised (3166 million in an IPO (initial public offering) that was originally planned for only some (375 million. Why did we raise this money? How did we do it, and why was this IPO so successful? The answer to the first question requires a description of the promoter and principal shareholder of Metal1 Mining Corporation, Metallgesellschaft AG. This West Germany company was founded over 100 years ago in Frankfurt as a trading house for non-ferrous metals. It has developed into one of the world's leading firms in the non-ferrous metals industry. The company's worldwide activities in all areas of that business include mining, smelting and refining, the trading of ore, base and precious metals, the production of semi-fabricated and finished metal products, and the provision of engineering, construction and transportation services. Metallgesellschaft AG has also diversified into many other areas, the most significant of which are manufacturing, the production of chemicals, the development and application of technical and chemical processes, the planning and construction of industrial plants, and activities associated with finance, insurance, shipping and freight forwarding, and the provision of barter and countertrade services. It shows that mining was far from the centre of Metallgesellschaft's activities. Therefore, it could not expect to receive an extraordinary amount of board attention. Thus, mining investments not only had to compare well with other mining opportunities, but were in fierce competition with projects from other divisions. In addition, mining was sub-divided into two separate departments -- domestic and international. These two departments had different management styles and diverging interests which resulted in a minimum co-operation between them. The domestic mining department was primarily interested in the survival of the local mines. These mines were characterized by rising operating costs and declining ore grades. It took a special commitment and continued ingenuity to develop and adjust to local conditions, and modern mining and processing technology, in order to remain competitive, or at least survive within the international mining industry. DATA concerning the actual net energy required for pulverizing coal are lacking from the literature on coal pulverization. Power data given in the literature concern gross power and frequently include the power expended on the air blast or product-conveyor system, as well as power lost through friction in the pulverizer itself. Consequently, such data supply no information regarding the net energy consumed in pulverizing or the relative grinding resistance of various coals. In the study of coal pulverizing much work has been done on what is known as "grindability-index numbers," but grindability tests have seldom considered the energy input (that is, the "cause" part of the system "cause and effect"). There are many records of the effect, but even these have questionable value because the "grindability" tests did not make a pulverized product by a method comparable with commercial pulverizers. In many of the tests, only a selected part of the coal was ground, and the remainder continued to be an unknown factor. Furthermore, none of the grindability tests provide the balanced circulating load common to all modern commercial pulverizing. In order to obtain better understanding of the fundamental principles of coal pulverizing, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the "cause" phase; that is, the net energy input or net power excluding friction between the moving parts of the machine. As a first step in the investigation, it was necessary to design and construct a laboratory machine in which no friction-loss corrections are involved, which could grind and finish a minus-3/4 -inch feed, which could be emptied rapidly and completely, which could operate with a continuous feed and finish in an air separator; and, most essential of all, which would be equipped with a measuring device for recording only that portion of the total power consumed in actual pulverizing, hereafter referred to as "net energy input" or "net horse-powerhours." The channel-roller pulverizer here-inafter described is believed to meet these requirements. HISTORY OF THE MACHINE The work started when Ralph W. Smith, engineer, St. Genevieve Lime Co., St. Genevieve, Mo., was appointed one of the consultants of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, to develop a machine for testing the abrasiveness of coal. Smith had already developed a machine for testing the abrasiveness of dentifrices,1 and it was thought the same principles might be applied to coal. THE subject of electric signals for the despatching off mining cages through shafts has received cousiderable attention recently from various mining companies. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co. has found it necessary to develop a system that is reliable, safe and simple in operation, and easy to repair. The movement of all mine cages or skips is under the direction of a station tender, who rides on the cages when men or supplies are being lowered or raised. When ore is hoisted, he is stationed at a skip pocket for loading and despatching the skips. For the station tender's use, two signal systems are installed in each hoisting compartment, and he is the only employee authorized to use them. One system is known as the "AC" or Station bells, as it is operated from the 110-volt, 60-cycle, power service; the other system, called the "DC" or shafts bells, takes its energy from closed-circuit primary batteries. As a supplement to the two main signals, a buzzer system is installed. The general arrangement is similar to "the main signal, except that there is a mine buzzer at each station. When a signal switch connected into the buzzer system is pulled down, all buzzers are operated, thus notifying the station tender that he is wanted at some particular level. Placed on the station posts, and within easy reach of the men on the cages, are the signal pull switches for the main signals. The station, or "AC," pull switches are furnished with a short rope as shown in Fig. 1, while the shaft, or "DC," pull switches are equipped with ropes that extend down the shaft past the next station. To avoid all confusion in the use of the three signal systems, a standard arrangement has been adopted in all mines for the location of the pull switches. Fig. 2 illustrates the position of the pull switch at the various mine stations for the main signal systems, but it does not show the buzzer pull switch; this is fixed to the roof timbers about 25 ft. back from the shaft. If the skip pockets are a considerable distance below the station, a pull switch for each main shaft compartment is connected to the "AC" system and placed at this point. However, if the distance is short, a light cord is attached to the station pull switches and dropped down to the skip pocket.

IN the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-min.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage. 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystallization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,1 Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work.

This investigation was made to evaluate the comparative effects of the viscosity and the phase behavior of the buffer fluid in the composite solvent displacement of Bradford crude from waterflooded sandstone cores. Buffer slugs of propane, naphtha and other refined hydrocarbons exbihiting increasingly favorable viscosity ratios and decreasing solubility relationships, respectively, with Bradford crude, were used in long Berea sandstone cores. The secondary slug was isopropyl alcohol. The results indicate that higher oil recoveries are obtained for increasingly favorable phase relationships even when these are accompanied by unfavorable viscosity ratios within the range studied. Moreover, when propane is used as a buffer slug with an adverse viscosity ratio of 36, it gives higher oil recoveries than at a similar size slug of an any1 alcohol having a viscosity ratio of 1.09. The investigation was extended to the study of the effect of flooding rate on oil recovery. Residual Bradford crude was displaced from a 6-ft Berea sandstone core at rates varying from 0.3 to 30 ft/ day. The results show that as flooding rates were increased above or decreased below a minimum range of 1 to 2 ft /day, displacement efficiency increased considerably. INTRODUCTION In recent years, the alcohol slug process as a means of tertiary recovery has been the subject of many investigations. Gatlin and Slobod showed the advantages of the combination solvent slugs over the previous single-slug process.1 The combination slugs require less total slug material to obtain similar oil recoveries. The basic combination process involves injecting a primary or buffer solvent which is preferentially oleophilic, followed in turn by a water-driven slug of isopropyl alcohol. This procedure ensures that the buffer slug, which is miscible only with the reservoir oil, displaces and replaces the oil and is in turn displaced, together with the water, by the isopropyl alcohol slug miscible with both fluids. Likewise, for those reservoir oils that show some degree of phase incompatibility with isopropyl alcohol, as does Bradford crude, a proper buffer solvent can artificially make the alcohol process technically feasible. From an economic standpoint, propane or LPG would be the most appropriate primary solvent to be used in the field; however, Taber, et a12 have indicated that the alcohol process becomes highly inefficient in the displacement of light hydrocarbons because of the entrapment of these hydrocarbons during the stabilized bank formation. Moreover, since materials such as propane have such low viscosities, adverse viscosity ratios with most reservoir oils would be penerated, thereby possibly further reducing the efficiency of the buffer solvent. This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the comparative effects of viscosity ratio and phase relationships on the displacement efficiency of Bradford crude by means of dual solvents. The work was extended to include the effect of flooding rate on oil recovery. Rates within the range of field and laboratory values were used. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE APPARATUS The porous media used in this study consisted of two 10-ft and one 6-ft Berea sandstone cores, 3-in. in diameter. These were cast in galvanized steel pipe of 31/2-in. ID and the annulus was filled with Armstrong cement. The 10-ft cores were assembled by connecting two 5-ft units, which were joined together by 8-in. steel flanges fitted to the pipe. Intimate contact between the two sections was obtained by inserting a thin disk of the same sandstone between the core faces. The outlet and inlet ends of the cores were covered with threaded pipe caps. The injected fluid was gravity fed to two variable-rate positive-displacement pumps. TWO years ago the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers made a memorable contribution toward a better understanding of the problems that have for many years confronted the coal industry. Specific suggestions toward betterment were then advanced, certain of which were taken up, amplified and endorsed by men who were conscien-tiously interested in the work of lifting this great industry out of the morass it has lain in for years. Two certain suggestions then made-provision for seasonal variations in railroad freight rates that would tend to encourage the purchase and movement of coal during the low summer production period, and provi-sion for the collection by the United States Government of all the facts surrounding the industry-were intro-duced in the form of legislation in the United States Senate by a member of that body, a man whose personal character, antecedents and business training put him above and beyond all suspicion of demagoguery; however, as the result of the insistent, vindictive opposition of the industry itself, these two bills, con-structive in their nature, were buried under an ava-lanche of misrepresentation. Today, with all mines that employ union labor at a stand still, the work of stabilizing the industry is yet before us. As aptly stated by Herbert Hoover, in March, 1920, when he was president of the Institute; An engineering organization is particularly the body to under-take this work. It is an economic problem, an engineering pro-blem within the ken of our experience; it is a problem that requires not only constructive thought but quantitative thought and wise social thought. The engineers of the United States occupy a position midway between capital and labor. They enter upon problems of this kind without prejudice either way, and they have that faculty of mind for quantitative thought, as distinguished from qualitative thought, that takes such problems as this out of the region of politics into the region of matter-of-fact solution.
