Formulae expressing the dependence of the mass of a grinding ball on the amount of material milled by a ball mill are derived. It is shown that, with the aid of these formulae, it is relativel rsimple for the results of a marked-ball test to be analysed and for the relative performance and cost-effectiveness 0 the various types of ball under test to be evaluated. Predictions based on theory and the results obtained in a marked-ball test in a ball mill are compared detail and shown to be in close agreement. The difficulties associated with marked-ball tests are considered, and an explanation for the decrease in the calculated consumption of the balls, which follows naturally from the theory, is presented. The marked-ball anomaly explained, and it is demonstrated that the ball consumption in a ball mill can be predicted with fair accuracy from the results of a marked-ball test.

The stability of pillars is analysed on the assumption that pillars shed load in a stable manner if the slope the strata load-deformation relation is steeper than that of pillars in the post-peak regime. Concepts of local stiffness, mine structural stiffness, and critical stiffness are discussed. Procedures are described for the determination of strata stiffness for various pillar layouts by use of the available boundary-element computer programs. The postpeak stiffness of pillars is assessed from the available data relating to the post-peak load-deformation relationship and width-to-height ratio. Stability analyses are carried out by the contrasting of strata stiffness with post-peak pillar stiffness. It is shown that the strata stiffness becomes unacceptably small for a stable yield-pillar layout when the span exceeds about 5 times the depth. The strata stiffness is found to increase, thereby increasing the stability, as the span-to-depth ratio, number of pillars, and percentage extraction are decreased. It is also found that the stability in a yield pillar becomes difficult to achieve when al the pillars in a layout are in the descending part their post-peak load-deformation curve

Handling materials in underground mines continues to be a major safety problem. To help reduce materials-handling injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Spokane Research Laboratory is developing, modifying, and testing equipment to replace the necessity of doing lifting tasks manually. To reduce single-event lift injuries, equipment having mechanical automatic weight sensing and balancing control was investigated. The Coleman manipulator was selected for testing. Modifications to the Coleman manipulator to make it more suitable for underground mine use included mobilization, self-containment, all-purpose gripper attachment, and support jacks. To reduce or eliminate the need to clean off manually the materials that commonly plug grizzly openings (timbers, wire mesh, roof bolts, and other debris), a track-guided pincher arm device was developed. The TGPA attaches to an impact hammer head, and the pincher arms are controlled by the operator of the hammer. Oversized rock can be broken with the pincher arms in the up position; the arms can then be lowered to grab and remove debris. Sweeping action to remove cohesive fines bridging grizzly openings is also greatly improved. This device is especially useful in recessed grizzlies. An industrial gun was tested to evaluate its effectiveness in breaking oversized rock. Boulders up to 76 cm in diameter were successfully broken to minus 33 cm. Although methods to control flyrock need to be developed, an industrial gun may be a safe and inexpensive alternative to breaking oversized rock in certain underground mining situations. Many minerals processing operations result in crushed rock being mixed with a liquid. Sometimes, the rock particles have to be dried before the next process begins and there may be a considerable distance between the equipment carrying out these processes. Bateman Engineered Technologies (BET) developed, patented and commercialized a method of simultaneous pneumatic conveying and drying. A joint project to assist with optimizing the process is under-way. Part of it is a numerical simulation of the process. The simulation is done using a dedicated program written in MATLAB, (commercial software which is widely used in engineering). It accounts for heat and mass transfer as well as particle transport. The main part of the program consists of a loop containing a series of equations which are evaluated sequentially. During any particular iteration, the properties are changed one at a time. Since the properties are changing relatively slowly, this method gives good results. The outputs of the simulation are consistent with the operational experience of BET’s engineers. The output is very comprehensive and all numerical. Since the program is currently being used for research purposes, flexibility is very important. Thus the output is converted into a spreadsheet file. Variations in the output quantities are displayed graphically using MS Excel. Some simulation could have been done using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The advantages and disadvantages (technical, financial and skills requirements) of the two approaches for this particular type of simulation are compared briefly. The rate of reaction between different carbonaceous reducing agents and silicon monoxide gas was studied by the use of a technique developed in Norway by Tuset and Raaness. Argon carrier gas was used to pass a known fixed concentration of silicon monoxide gas through an I1 cm3 sample of precalcined reducing agent at 1650°c. Silicon monoxide gas was generated by the heating of a mixture of silica and silicon carbide, and the progress of the reaction was followed by monitoring the carbon monoxide in the off-gas with an infrared spectrometer. The reactivity of silicon monoxide gas towards a number of carbonaceous reducing agents (charcoal, Iscor coke, Lurgi char, and petroleum coke) was shown to be similar to results obtained with the carbon dioxide reactivity test. The silicon monoxide reactivity test was able to indicate the extent to which fines were generated when the reducing agent was converted to silicon carbide. Of the reducing agents studied, Lurgi char appeared to be the most suitable for the production of ferrosilicon because it has a high reactivity towards silicon monoxide gas and high strength when converted to silicon carbide. So that industry could be given some indication of the suitability of certain reducing agents for the production of ferrosilicon and silicon metal, a reactivity scale similar to that of Tuset and Raaness was constructed that compares the volume of silicon monoxide gas required by a reducing agent to reach a carbon monoxide content of 10 per cent in the off-gas during the conversion of the reducing agent to silicon carbide. This scale assists in the selection of those reducing agents that require less silicon monoxide gas for conversion to silicon carbide, and that give savings in material and power costs because less silicon monoxide gas need be generated in the furnace.

SYNOPSIS The paper describes the rib-pillar extraction method now used at Sigma Colliery in the Orange Free State. In this method, access roadways (with a high safety factor) are developed into a block of coal suitable for total extraction; pillars that have a low safety factor are then formed and extracted immediately. The method, together with the current practices of labour management, has resulted in better utilization of the coal resources and capital, increased production and labour productivity, and improved safety.

The paper deals briefly with the history of vanadium, and its uses, price movement, and world resources. It then describes the titanomagnetite ore of the Bushveld Complex, and the production of vanadium from this ore at Highveld Steel & Vanadium Corporation Limited, giving details of the various processes used, including the roast-leach, rotary-kiln, electric-smelting, shaking-ladle, and basic-oxygen-furnace operations. The paper concludes with a very brief account of the treatment of Highveld slags in Europe for the production of vanadium pentoxlde and ferrovanadium.

This. paper indicates how the South African Iron and Steel Industrial Corporation Limited (Iscor), as a major consumer of raw materials, determines the tonnage and quality of essential raw materials required to satisfy an increasing demand for steel and how this led to the establishment of a coal mine with a highly sophisticated beneficiation plant in the Waterberg coalfield, near Ellisras in the Transvaal. The planning of the project, with specific reference to the limited reserves of metallurgical coal in South Africa, the quality and quantity of the coal to be produced, and the way in which the project was managed is discussed briefly.

Deposition of gold-bearing deposits in the Witwatersrand Basin was controlled by hydraulic processes. These resulted in the formation of independent sedimentological facies areas having different statistics and semivariograms. Consequently, when there are indications that data are a mixture of statistical populations, it is important to decompose them into statistical subpopulations and analyse these independently. However, in the case of actual mining, physical position and extent of sub- populations are important and, as a consequence, any decomposition of data must take space into account if it is to be of use. An algorithm for the spatial decomposition of data into its sub-populations is described and is applied to real data taken from the Witwatersrand. Two distinct areas with completely different geostatistical parameters were revealed.

The aspect ratio (mill diameter/mill length) of autogenous and semi autogenous mills varies widely and can be as high as three or as low as 0.5. The literature on the subject of what effect aspect ratio has on grinding mill performance or energy efficiency is almost non-existent. However, at the design stage of many grinding circuits the subject is often vigorously debated amongst metallurgists. In this paper the performance characteristics of mills with different aspect ratios are examined to determine whether process performance characteristics are a function of aspect ratio and whether high aspect ratio mills are any more or less energy efficient than low aspect ratio units. Data from both pilot and full-scale mills are used for this purpose in open and closed circuit configurations.

Ingot casting and wire drawing In Iron Age Southern Africa by R. H. STEEL (Visitor) This paper describes the experiments that were conducted in 1974/1975 on two related aspects of Iron Age copper technology in Southern Africa: ingot casting and wire drawing. Three types of ingot were successfully cast: the St Andrew's Cross ingot, the marale ingot, and the musuku. It is suggested that the 'studs' on the musuku are not the remains of broken-off rods as previously proposed by other investigators, but that the ridged pattern is an ornamental feature. Copper wire was successfully drawn with similar tools and according to the procedures described in the literature on African Iron Age wire drawing. It is concluded that these accounts are generally accurate and that the pre-European metal workers are worthy of respect for the results they achieved with primitive methods.

Some aspects of the mechanical behaviour of chromium-containing dual-phase 3CR12 steel were investigated as a function of the temperature and strain rate. The yield stress was found to depend on both the temperature and the strain rate, with no substantial differences between the longitudinal and the transverse directions. The strain-rate sensitivity decreased with increasing temperature. The yield stress could be presented as a function of a temperature-strain-rate parameter. Impact test results showed substantial differences between the energy absorption of the transverse and longitudinal specimens above the ductile-brittle transition temperature. Changes in energy absorption with temperature were gradual for specimens in both orientations, and the transition from ductile to brittle behaviour occurred between 373 and 173 K. Strain rates ahead of the tip of notches with different geometries were calculated and measured experimentally.

The paper opens with a summary of the major factors responsible for spontaneous combustion in coal discards. These include heat arising from the oxidation of coal and pyrite, and from the weting of dry or oxidized coal and pyrite; and certain petrographic conditions leading to self-ignition of the coal such as low rank, the presence of a high proportion of reactive constituents, and the occurence of highly porous and botanicaly structured inertinite macerals, The analyses of 6 samples from 2 discard dumps in the Witbank coalfield are included, which show that, according to a three-grade classification of liability to spontaneous combustion, one dump is 'reasonably liable' and the other is 'most liable', It is pointed out that factors other than liability to self-ignition determine the possible utilization of such discards, and that the prevention of oxidation is of great importance if they are to be utilized and spontaneous combustion to be prevented,

Trends in PGM demand?The conference paper will cover a concise analysis of demand trends, which will include the major PGM end-use sectors (autocatalysis, jewellery, glass, petroleum, nitric acid, medical/dental) and will touch on the investment sector. Reference will be made to environmental legislation affecting global emission standards, trends in PGM loadings and the substitutability of platinum and palladium in this end-use sector. Observations will also be made on the jewellery sector, and the development of Chinese and Japanese demand. Trends in primary and secondary PGM supply?Similarly the paper will summarize historic and current global mine supply and primary production trends for PGMs, referencing recent expansions, their deliverability, and other projects coming on line. Consideration will be given to the grade and geology of PGMs worldwide and metallurgical developments. PGMs produced as by-products of base metal production and early PGM recycling estimates will also be appraised. We consider in this paper the use of a modified version of Hotelling?s statistic in the analysis of particle size distributions. The statistic can be adversely affected by the presence of outliers among the data. We propose a competitor to the statistic that is based on ranks, and hence is less sensitive to outlier effects. The results of a Monte Carlo study suggest that the rank test is highly competitive with the Hotelling test in its ability to detect differences between two mass size distributions. The calculation of the rank statistic is explained in detail and its application is illustrated on two sets of data.
