Accurate measurement of blast fragmentation is important in mining and quarrying operations, to monitor blasting and optimize blast design. A new digital photoanalytical method to measure the block size is presented here. Photographs of the broken rock are digitized, apparent size distributions measured, and corrections made for overlapping blocks, by means of an empirically derived correction function. The method was tested during recent full-scale blasting tests in Virginia, USA. It shows great potential as a practical aid to predicting, monitoring, and controlling the quality of the fragmented rock.

On behalf of ICI's group of explosives companies around the world, a research programme is being undertaken to develop a new electrical shotfiring system which will have markedly improved safety features and operational advantages over existing initiating systems. The paper describes the development of the 'Magnadet' Electric Detonator and 'Magna' Primer and the field experience to date. It also indicates those areas where further work is being carried out on modification of the basic designs to meet specific application requirements.

Researchers in the field of blasting have been trying to develop ways of predicting fragmentation in the last few decades. The Kuznetsov equation estimates the average fragment size, XJ~, based on explosive energy and powder factors. Cunningham calculates the uniformity of a fragment size distribution using drilling accuracy, blast geometry and a rock factor A associated with a “blastability index”, which can be estimated from the jointing, density and hardness of the blasted rock mass. Knowing the mean size and the uniformity index, a Rosin-Rammler distribution equation can then be derived for calculating the fragment size distribution in a blasted muckpile. Analysis of existing data has revealed serious discrepancies between actual and calculated uniformity indices. The current integrated approach combines the Kuznetsov or similar equation and a comminution concept like the Bond Index equation to enable the estimation of both the 50% and SOoh passing sizes (X& and X& ). By substituting these two passing sizes into the Rosin-Rammler equation, the characteristic size (Xc ) and the uniformity index (n) can be obtained to allow the calculation of various fragment sizes in a given blast. The effectiveness of this new fragmentation prediction approach has been tested using sieved data from small-scale bench blasts, available in the literature. This paper will cover all tested results and a discussion on the discrepancy between measurement and prediction due to possible energy loss during blasting.

In a large-scale open-pit mining operation, continuous efforts are made to control damage to the slope walls. An essential tool in this effort is determining the PPVc (critical peak particle velocity) in areas of interest. By knowing this value and generating criteria, drilling and blasting designs can be established to reduce vibrations that affect wall construction. It is crucial to understand that the PPVc changes as different mining phases develop, especially due to exploitation on the benches, which leads to vertical inherited damage. Therefore, it is imperative to regularly update the PPVc based on field tests that provide accurate data. With this information, vibration damage criteria can be established, and drilling and blasting techniques can be designed to minimize the impact on the remaining rock mass. This document presents a methodology for generating scaled criteria that best represent the reality of the rock mass.

The quality of a blast design can be evaluated in many ways. It may involve fragmentation, muck profile, environmental effects in terms of vibration and the excavation of the blasted material. To assist and ensure an achievable cost effective design, numerical modeling techniques are often applied as part of the operating procedure. While excavation is one of the mining operations which has a direct influence on the bottom line cost of productivity, the characteristics of a pile of blasted material deserves a closer look in terms of diggability. This paper reviews the current diggability techniques available for application to the blasting operation. To help better understand the involvement in digging, this paper also introduces an evaluation approach based on a discrete element method. The model presented in this paper deals with many variables that are considered to directly affect digging. They are the density and cohesion of material, fragment shape and size distribution as well as the swell of a muck pile. To help visualize the analysis approach, sample runs and animations are given in the paper to show the setup of muck piles produced in bench blasting as well as in sub-level caving. The computed forces experienced by the bucket during each mucking cycle are also discussed.

The ability of voids, microballoons, and even solids to sensitize explosives has been known and used for many years. This phenomenon has generally been studied and reported under the terminology of "hot spots" because of the increase in local pressure and temperature when a shock wave encounters such sensitizers. A method for treating this phenomenon in detonation theory or in a detonation model has been studied for almost the same length of time. Perhaps because of the complexity and non-linearity of the void, or microballoon collapse, several of these studies have used the expediency of including additional terms in the burn rate law to account for the influence of hot spots. The detonation model proposed here considers the sensitization due to discontinuities in the shock impedance to be a mechanical phenomenon to be accounted for in the mechanical equations governing the detonation and not in the burn rate law. While this is not a new contention, the method for handling this non-linear phenomenon within the proposed model is new. The model also includes a method which accounts for the manufacturing variables of emulsion matrix cell size, microballoon size and type, as well as energetic additives.

As farms decrease and subdivisions increase there is a continuing demand for easy and safe silo removal. A few years ago I attended one of the Omni istribution explosive classes and was impressed by a product designed by Omni owner Bill Nixon called the Omni Breach. Its original purpose and main current use is law enforcement; specifically door breaching and tactical operations, with most of the force coming from water using a minimal amount of explosive component. I experimented with various charge strengths on concrete and found that it can be easily shattered with little flyrock or airblast. A neighbor of mine had an old silo within a foot of a barn that he was rebuilding and inquired about its removal. His property was sandwiched between an elementary school and Interstate 40, so I told him that I would do some test shots and if the results proved satisfactory, I would take the job for free to test the following theory.

Secondary or boulders blasting is a regular feature of quarrying operations in Pakistan, especially in cement and stone crushing industries. The main reason for secondary blasting is the production of a large number of boulders during the production blast. These boulders are larger than the feed hopper of crushers and require further breaking. The complex geometry of boulders, relative lack of restraining burdens, and the availability of number of free faces make this kind of blasting more hazardous than production blasting. Secondary blasts have generally unpredictable results and may cause flyrock, airblast, and over-crushing of rock material. Thus, it is essential to have an appropriate amount of explosive charge/powder factor, and for it to be properly distributed in the blast hole. The greater the amount of explosive over the required amount, the more violent is the blast, which will result in more flyrock, airblast, and excessive crushing of boulders.

According to the Directive 93/15/EEC, given on 5th of April 1993, all the commercial explosives placed on the market and transfered in European Union and EFTA countries have to be certified and contain the CE-marking. Before the products can be awarded by the CE-marking they have to fulfil the Essential Safety Requirements (ESR) of Appendix 1 of the Directive. From the beginning of last year the commercial explosives could not have been be sold in Europian Union countries without the CE-marking. The legitimacy of the Directive 93/15/EEC encompasses High Explosives, Detonating Cords, Safety Fuses, Gun Propellants and Detonators. At the moment in Europe, there are seven Notified Bodies (NB) working in the field of commercial explosives. They are in Spain (LOM), Germany (BAM), France (INERES), England (HSL), Netherlands (TNO-PML), Sweden (SP) and in Finland (PvTT). The Swedish SP has qualifications only for the detonators and the Finnish PvTT for High explosives, Detonating cords, Safety Fuses and Gun Propellants, but not for the detonators. The role of the NB is to work as a third independent body between the client and the manufacturer testing, studying and certifying explosives by the commission of the manufacturer. The Notified Bodies are operating independently competing the clients, the explosives manufactures.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate commonly used methods for mitigating the effects of shrapnel from linear shape charges (LSC) used in the demolition industry. Primarily the problem is not that shrapnel poses a threat to human bystanders, but rather it can affect the other charges in the demolition or damage to structures in close proximity to the charges. This research aims to determine what methods have success at stopping shrapnel, what methods do not, and to promote an awareness of the dangers of using the LSC without any protection. The project was carried out at the Experimental Mine site at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. This research is an undergraduate research project to fulfill the requirements for the Explosives Engineering minor program at MST.

With the continuing rise in the cost of petroleum products and the focus on the increasing use of renewable resources, a readily available, economical replacement for fuel oil in ANFO is the logical next step, and has finally come to realization. This “green” fuel is plentiful, derived from renewable resources, more cost effective and reduces CO emissions. It also increases product density and bulk strength performance. As this unique fuel replaces some of the mass of ammonium nitrate prill, increased savings will be realized proportionally with the increasing cost of ammonium nitrate. Minimal changes are necessary, as this renewable fuel is designed for use and handling with current, commonly used ANFO blending and loading equipment. This proven technology is now in use by commercial operations in the Southwest, providing significant economic benefit with reduced cost per hundred weight of ANFO consumed.

"At an Australian iron ore open-cut mine, 129 separate blast patterns (consisting of 38.5 million tonnes /42.4 million US tons, equaling 28% of annual blasted tonnes) were initiated using electronic detonators. 87 patterns were designed as per site methodology using ‘vectorial’ initiation timing sequences (blast direction and relief specified only), while the remaining 42 patterns were designed with interactive initiation timing sequences - hole by hole sequencing based on the measured site specific primary shock wave (P-wave) velocity and distance between blast-holes. The intention of this project was primarily to reduce material size presented to the crushing circuit, and also to determine if productivity benefits could be obtained by the use of interactive timing."

Blasting liability problems are frequently compounded by a company's inability to effectively communicate with concerned property owners and the lack of adequate complaint documentation. Often, by the time the insurance carrier becomes involved in a blasting claim, the situation has deteriorated to the point that a solution agreeable to both parties is virtually impossible to reach. The insurance carrier, wishing to minimize their lose potential may decide to pay on a somewhat questionable blasting claim rather than be drawn into lengthy civil proceedings that would ultimately end up in front of a jury with little chance for a successful outcome.
