"INTRODUCTIONToday’s metal mining focusses on land based ore deposits which only consider one third of the Earth’s surface. Through an increasing global demand of strategic metals used in the electronic and green industry (Zepf et al. 2014), ‘uneconomic’ sites of lower grade in more technical challenging grounds such as greater depth and/or more remote areas are developed by the mining industry often resulting in higher environmental impact. However, considering the steady growth of the Earth population a shortage of certain metals may occur (Krausmann et al. 2009). In 2010, the United Nations allowed commercial exploration for seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) in international waters with currently six contractor licenses being granted.Although the number of discovered vent sites has steadily increased since the first discovery of hydrothermal venting at the Galapagos Rift in 1977 (Corliss et al. 1979) with more than 600 sites being known today, their economic potential is poorly constrained. So far Nautilus Minerals Inc., a Canadian mining company, is the only company having conducted a NI 43-101 resource estimate for the Solwara site, located in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea. Other studies using bulk geochemical data from 95 sites published in literature do exist (Hannington et al. 2011, Monecke et al. 2016) suggesting a global resource potential for today’s known SMS deposits of 600 million tons with a median grade of 3 wt.-% copper, 9 wt.-% zinc, 2 g/t gold and 100 g/t silver. However, the geochemical data being used originated mainly from easily recoverable, mainly non insitu surface grab-samples and are under current mineral resource classification schemes such as JORC code or NI 43-101 not even accepted for resource estimations. Furthermore surface samples such as high-temperature sulphide chimney and talus material are not representative for the entire deposits with information regards thickness and continuity of individual sulphide layers obtained through drilling being scarce. In addition, it remains unknown what geological processes occur once hydrothermal activity ceases and whether metal tenor becomes enriched, depleted or disappears."

"This study presents the first catalogue of marine mineral deposits and energy resources along the continental margin of Spain. Aggregates, oil and gas and metalliferous mineral areas have been defined and mapped. The catalogue, implemented in a geographic information system (GIS), is conceived as a first national database within the European network, which is being built as part of the EMODnet-Geology project. It comprises 8 types of mineral and energy resources for the Spanish margins: aggregates, hydrocarbons, evaporites, placer deposits, phosphorites, polymetallic sulfides, polymetallic nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (Figures 1 and 2). The catalogue stores a total of 409 marine mineral deposits and compiles information such as name, deposit type, main morphology, main minerals, setting or area extent for each mineral deposit. By number of deposits compiled, the aggregates are the most abundant (286) followed by hydrocarbons (62), cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (32), evaporites (9), placer deposits (8), phosphorites (5), polymetallic nodules (4) and polymetallic sulphide deposits (3). Considering the total extension, hydrocarbons (32,386 km2) and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (24,951 km2) represent the biggest areas.The Geological Survey of Spain (IGME) is developing a new tool in the catalogue, according the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Database parameters, for individual samples on each ferromanganese deposit. The database includes an extensive collection of records that comprise five information groups: general cruise and sample data, physical properties, mineralogy, geochemistry and acronyms used. New attributes have been incorporated, in example: geophysical, sedimentological and petrological data in the deposit area, sample weight, porosity, morphology, textural and structural features, geochemistry of major, minor and trace elements (included REEs and PGEs) and supplementary cruise and laboratory reports. This new database complements the EMODnet-Geology project minerals catalogue, offering a deeper level of information for the areas with major potential for mineral or energy resources as they are the Canary Island Seamount Province, the West Margin of Galicia and the Gulf of Cadiz."

Although Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni, and Co have been the main interests since the ferromanganese nodules had been found, the other major components such as Si and Ca might be very important controlling factors in the processing due to the locally variable content. It is because of the fact that SiO2 and CaO are added to decrease the smelting temperature in the reduction-smelting method for manganese nodule processing. We have compiled the 707 chemical data for KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Survey) ferromanganese nodules, which have been acquired from 1994 to 2001 and have been also standardized from 2001 to 2003 to avoid the discrepancy between the data sets. All 707 chemical data were used for the hierarchical cluster analysis to get the elemental correlations and also classified by the morphological types. The averages from each station were classified by the facies groups (Fig. 1) and the localities. Then all data are plotted on the SiO2-CaO-MnO phase diagram at 1773°K to compare with the best compositional area in the nodule smelting. Variations and distributions of SiO2 and CaO as well as those of Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni and Co in KODOS ferromanganese nodules were also reviewed. The mineral phases assigned by the cluster analysis are CFA (Carbonate Fluorapatite), Fe-oxide, Al-silicate, and Mn-oxide. MnO contents are generally higher than SiO2 contents in most of the morphological types except for the Is- and It-type. The Dt- and Tt-type show wider range and the E-types show high anomaly in their CaO contents. The stations which belong to facies group A and B show generally higher MnO contents than SiO2 contents, however, the stations of facies group C and D show wide range in their MnO and SiO2 contents.

Metal-rich sediments precipitating from hot saline brine pools were first discovered in 1965 in the Red Sea.1-2 The subsequent discovery of high temperature black smokers and associated massive sulphides in 1977 at latitude 21oN on the East Pacific Rise3 came more as a confirmation than a revelation. Formation of massive sulphides through precipitation from circulating sea-water had been predicted by Oftedahl in 19584, and the mechanisms well evaluated in basaltic-hosted Cyprus-type 5 and in Kuroko-type deposits.6,7 Sea-floor exploration from 1977 through the 1980?s in sediment-starved mid-oceanic ridge (MOR) settings had little impact on land-based exploration. This is primarily because: a) MOR spreading centres were recognized as poor analogies to even Cyprus-type basalt-hosted deposits; b) their preservation potential was limited due to rapid oxidation and c) the metallic deposits studied were small and therefore not directly comparable to the far larger ore bodies on land. More recently underwater mineral deposit research has focused in a variety of back-arc environments associated with felsic submarine volcanism, environments more similar to those predicted for the formation of Kuroko-type deposits (e.g. Okinawa Trough, 8 Lau Basin, 9 Manus Basin, 10 Aeolian arc, 11). Most studies, while scientifically interesting, were hampered, in general, by a lack of good descriptive data, a reliance on isolated grab samples, and a lack of sub-surface observations. This research has therefore had only limited direct impact on exploration strategies with the possible exception of research conducted in areas where faulting provided enhanced vertical exposures. 12

The most exciting frontier in Ocean Technology is represented by a new class of Marine Bioproducts, the source of which lies in marine microorganisms. The microorganisms include microalgae, bacteria and archaea. These organisms represent very diverse, adaptive life forms and in their metabolic processes use carotenoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, ultraviolet blockers, as well as a wide range of enzymes that are pivotal in the production of new pharmaceuticals and nutraceutical products. These organisms cover a wide spectrum of ocean environments, from the shallow to the deep, from the normal to the extreme. The technological challenge is in the identification of candidate organisms, in the screening for valuable enzymes, and in the industrial production. A whole new range of collecting strategies involving submersibles, ROVs and in situ ocean floor instrumentation is emerging. New non-polluting industrial chemical processes involving the use of photobioreactors and extremophile bioreactors for breeding and monitoring these organisms in neo-farming technology is emerging. The commercial value of these candidate products is immense, as is the range of potential organisms. The dimension of this new industry is global. The Marine Bioproducts Engineering Center (MarBEC), funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), has been established at the University of Hawaii. The vision of MarBEC is to develop a seamless research system stretching from undergraduate education to industry for the purposes of producing valuable marine bioproducts outside of the normal chemical factory production. MarBEC is uniquely and strategically placed in the Pacific to explore, find, and adapt highly bioactive marine micro-organisms found in the tropical ocean. The seafloor occurrences of KODOS ferromanganese nodules can be classified into four facies based on the morphological types of nodules recovered and seafloor photographs. Facies A, B, and C are relatively unimodal whereas Facies D is bimodal in the size distribution of nodules. Both Facies A and B are highly covered by sediments, but Facies B is higher than facies A in nodule density. Facies C has a high density of small nodules and many traces of bioactivity. Facies D is irregular in nodule density, but occurs close to basement near scarps (Fig. 1). The transparent layer (TL) on subbottom profile records (von Stackelberg et al., 1987) is composed of three sedimentary units, which in cores are distinguished by color. The uppermost Unit I is postulated to be deposited during the past 0.21 Ma and the middle Unit II between 0.42 Ma and 0.21 Ma (MOMAF, 1997). There exists a hiatus between Unit II and Unit III. Unit III was deposited from 3.5 Ma to 1.5 Ma as determined by 10Be/9Be and/or 87Sr/86Sr dating (MOMAF, 2004). Internal textures observed on cut sections of nodules suggest four stages of nodule formation (Choi et al., 2000). The nuclei are either unbroken old nodules probably of hydrogenetic growth (1h and 2h) in Facies A and C, or nodule fragments probably of early diagenetic growth (2d) in Facies D, whereas there are both types in Facies B. The layers surrounding the hydrogenetic nodule nuclei are of hydrogenetic growth (3h and/or 4h) in Facies C, and are of early diagenetic growth (3d and/or 4d) in Facies A, B, and D. The layers surrounding the early diagenetic nodule fragments are mostly of early diagenetic growth (3d and 4d) in Facies A, B, and D. But hydrogenetic encrustations are also found as surface layers on the top in Facies B (Fig. 2).

The recent discoveries of hydrothermal activity in the ocean off New Zealand have created interest in the business community in the commercial possibilities of mining associated marine polymetallic sulfides. This interest is more so, as this hydrothermal activity is in much shallower depths, between 120 ? 1800 meters, than the typical 2400m in other parts of the oceans. Mining for other ocean deposits around NZ, such as phosphate nodules and off-shore deposits from gold bearing river beds is also attracting interest. The question is: - how can these deposits be mined without spending the enormous sums of money required for specialized mining technology? There are no dedicated off- the-shelf systems designed exclusively for underwater mining. Such systems require expensive development and manufacturing processes and then, are most probably designed for only one specific purpose. The costs involved place such equipment beyond the means of smaller entrepreneurial groups and only the big companies have the resources required. However, large companies are normally reluctant to take the risk of investing large sums of money into deep ocean projects. Australia and New Zealand, until recent times, have been somewhat isolated from European and North American technical resources - especially in the field of underwater technology. Over the past century such isolation has often led to solving problems with what has become locally known as ? ?the number 8 gauge wire method?. This approach to problem solving entails using whatever is available to get the job done and keep costs down. In the old days with NZ technology being mainly based around farming, a piece of No. 8 gauge fencing wire, although not designed for the purpose, was often used to fix various problems ? hence the term.

Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) in the western Pacific have received much attention as resources for gold, silver, copper, zinc, and lead (Lenoble, 2000). Since the end of the 1980s, SMS have been found in the back-arc basin and on oceanic island-arc areas. The typical representatives found are in the Okinawa Trough and on the Izu-Ogasawara Arc near Japan (Halbach et al., 1989; Iizasa et al., 1999), in the Lau Basin and the North Fiji Basin near Fiji (Fouquet et al., 1991; Bendel et al., 1993), and in the East Manus Basin near Papua New Guinea (PNG) (Kia and Lasark, 1999). The higher gold, silver, and copper contents in one of the areas increased the chance for profitable mining operation, which was considered by a private company (Malnic, 2001). The company gathered investment money and announced to start the commercial mining from 2010 (www.nautilusminerals.com). On the basis of geological information of the Sunrise Deposit of the Myojin Knoll on the Izu-Ogasawara Arc (Iizasa et al., 1999) and geotechnical characteristics of SMS (Yamazaki and Park, 2003), some preliminary economic validation analyses of the SMS mining in small production scale were reported by one of the authors (Yamazaki et al., 2003; Yamazaki and Park, 2005; Yamazaki, 2007). The results showed high profitability of the SMS mining.

Six active Kermadec arc submarine volcanoes, located between 34°S and 36°30'S were mapped and sampled between April and July 2005, using submersibles Pisces V and Pisces IV aboard the mothership R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa. The purpose was to study the relationship between hydrothermal activity, formation of hydrothermal mineral deposits, structure of the volcanoes, and the biodiversity of life associated with the hydrothermal vents. Of the volcanoes examined, all showed evidence of hydrothermal activity, including metal-rich plumes and helium anomalies. Only two of the volcanoes, namely Brothers and Clark, showed chimneys and surficial polymetallic sulfide deposition. Hydrothermal venting at a water depth of approximately 1,650 meters near the base of the northwest caldera wall of Brothers volcano has produced a field of chimneys, up to seven meters high and discharging black smoker venting. Temperatures up to 300°C were measured from the active vents. Clark volcano has a double cone summit at a water depth of 875 meters. The shallowest cone has a near-summit hydrothermal vent field with five-meter tall venting chimneys with smaller structures around the periphery. Water temperatures of 200°C were recorded for these chimneys.

Recently, the Korean government prepared a strategy for deep seabed mining, which consists of three stages for 20 years until 2010. The first step of the program is focused to conduct deep seabed exploration until 1993. The apparent "hurry-and-spend to catch-up" policy that the Korean government has shown in deep seabed mineral exploration was motivated by an effort to qualify a prerequisite requirement to be a pioneer investor as a developing country under the terms of Resolution II and the New York Understanding. Since 1983, KORDI (Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute) under the auspices of the Korean government has carried out deep seabed mineral exploration. The KORDI had a joint exploration program with USGS from 1989 to 1991 aiming to evaluate the potentiality of manganese nodule in the western part of Clarion-Clipperton Zone as well as that of manganese crusts in the western Pacific. In 1992, Korean government accelerates its program by the confirmation of national policy and the equipment of new built research vessel, Onnuri-Ho. The RIV Onnuri-Ho is about 1400 G/T, which is equipped with various advanced instruments including GPS, multi-beam echosounder (Seabeam 2000), multi-channel seismic system, and MDM system.

The Atlantic Continental Shelf (ACS) of the United States includes about 391,000 km2 extending from the shoreline to the 200-m isobath. It varies in width from a fraction of a kilometer (offshore of southern Florida) to about 150 km (offshore of Cape Cod, MA). The contained volume, of sand and gravel is estimated to be on the order of 3-7 x 1.011 m3. Concentrations of potentially commercially important heavy minerals (HM) exist locally, particularly in high-energy depositional environments (for example in channels, tidal deltas, ridge and swale areas, and submerged former shoreline complexes). Recently completed and ongoing studies of HM assemblages in vibracore samples from the south shore of Long Island Sound, NY, offshore of Ocean City, NJ, offshore of Cape May, NJ, offshore of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, VA, offshore of Myrtle Beach, SC (grab samples), and the ACS offshore of Florida provide the information base for this presentation (Table 1). The surficial sediments of the ACS contain local concentrations of HM that compare favorably to those in currently mined onshore deposits as shown

The Manus back-arc basin behind the New Britain Trench is one of the major sites of active seafloor hydrothermal vent-fields which are considered to be modern-day analogue of felsic volcanic-hosted polymetallic massive sulfide deposits abundant in ancient geological record. Many of these deposits represent multi-million dollar resources, and yet very little are known about the fundamental processes leading to their formation. In November 2000 January 2001, the PACMANUS hydrothermal system in this region will be targeted by the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 193 to investigate the internal anatomy. A number of observations that suggest that the tectonic, magmatic and hydrothermal processes in the eastern Manus basin spreading center are unusual in that they can not be explained by a simple back-arc opening due to subduction of the New Britain Trench. Geochemistry of submarine volcanoes in the eastern Manus basin, for instance, shows affinity to arc rather than back-arc type volcanoes. Yet these submarine volcanoes lie too faraway from the Benioff-Wadati zone. One hypothesis is that the magmatic and subsequent hydrothermal activity of this region is a direct result of the irregularities in the deep crust and upper mantle structure and that the tectonic process is controlled by the sharp inflection of the New Britain Trench. According to this hypothesis, the two major southeast-trending strike-slip faults in the eastern Manus Basin, Djaul and Weitin Faults, should extend farther down and join to the New Britain Trench. They would form a transform arm of the triple junction with the New Britain Trench southeast of New Britain Island and southwest of Bougainville Island forming the other two arms. A trench-trench-transform triple junction can not be stable over time, and therefore a slight change in the plate velocity may lead to a dramatic change in the configuration of the plate boundaries. If so, the instability of the triple junction may cause large tectonic deformations, such as mantle uplift under the Manus basin due to mantle rupturing by transform faults, and therefore may explain the arc-style volcanism and unusual compositions of hydrothermal deposits in the eastern Manus basin.

Deep Sea Minerals Inc. (DSM) is a high technology marine minerals and biotechnology corporation. The corporation is currently engaged in a worldwide leasing program to acquire exclusive rights in specific Economic Exclusive Zones (EEZ?s) that DSM?s marine geologists have identified as prospective targets for seabed mines of copper, zinc, gold, and silver. In the last two years the corporation has assembled an international team, including some of the world?s leading marine research scientists and engineers, and has created strategic partnerships and alliances with world-class engineering and mining groups. Development of a marine mining venture has key requirements in common with most other mining ventures. These include financing, deposit location, property acquisition, deposit delineation, and permitting, as well as the collection, transportation, processing and marketing of the ore itself. DSM has made progress on all of these fronts, which is outlined in a general way in this presentation. Financing for the venture is clearly the first big hurdle to overcome. Deep seabed mining involves new technologies and significant up-front capital investment. Less than fifteen years ago, such financing would probably have impossible to achieve, given classical business models. However, with the spectacular success of high technology ventures in the areas of electronics, software, and biotechnology, new business models and investment strategies have evolved which put relatively high evaluations on intellectual property and exhibit relatively high confidence in new ways of doing things. DSM is taking full advantage of these changes in venture capital markets in its financial planning.

Manganese nodules on deep ocean floors have continuously received attention as potential sources for strategic metals such as Co, Ni, Cu, and Mn, due to their vast distribution and relatively higher metal concentrations (Mero, 1965; Cronan, 1980). Several registered Pioneer Investors have already identified promising sites in deep-sea regions for manganese nodule mining (ISA, 1998), and appropriate mining technologies have been developed during the last thirty years by the international consortium and several nations (Welling, 1981; Kaufman et al., 1985; Bath, 1989; Charles et al., 1990; Yang and Wang, 1997; Yamada and Yamazaki, 1998; Hong and Kim, 1999; Muthunayagam and Das, 1999). The mining feasibility for manganese nodules, including an economic evaluation, has been examined in detail by some researchers (Andrews et al., 1983; Hillman and Gosling, 1985; Charles et al., 1990; Soreide et al., 2001).

The traditional method of deep sea manganese nodule exploration is to conduct grid survey and sampling on successively finer scales until a suitable deposit has been delineated. Clearly this is both time consuming and ultimately self-defeating if large areas of the ocean floor are to be explored on a human timescale. A conceptual deductive approach would be preferable if one could be found, as it would aim to outline areas of potentially economic nodules on the basis of easily measurable oceanographic parameters. An attempt to achieve this aim in the Central Pacific is outlined below. Nodule Distribution in the Central Pacific Ocean Maps of ore grade nodules in the Central Pacific show that they are confined to two zones trending roughly east-west which are well separated in the eastern Pacific but which tend to converge towards 170-180ºW. They follow the isolines of intermediate biological productivity in the surface waters, strongly suggestive of a biological control on their distribution. Within these zones the nodules preferentially occupy basin areas. Thus they are found in the Penrhyn Basin, Tokelau Basin, Central Pacific Basin, Clarion Clipperton Zone and Tiki Basin. Nodules in all these areas have features in common and are thought to have obtained their distinctive composition by similar processes.

The resources and reserves calculation of marine diamond deposits should be based on a systematic sampling grid. The distribution of the sample grade results tends to be very skew and has a large variance. A bias is easily introduced due to the fact that the grade distribution of the samples is very different from the grades of the area of influence. The temptation is always there to extrapolate the highest grade samples simply to their area of influence. If this is done, the higher grade areas will be systematically overestimated, while the lower grade areas will be underestimated. Such a bias should surely be avoided by weighing the sample grades in such a way with their neighbours, so that the estimated grades have a similar distribution as the grades of the blocks. The grade distribution of small mining blocks tend to be lognormal-like. If the coefficient of variation is known, i.e. the standard deviation divided by the mean, then the grade distribution of the small mining blocks is relatively well-defined. The distribution of the diamonds within the deposits can be simulated, based on the histogram of the sample results and on the semivariogram. The diamonds tend to cluster in trapsites. From the semivariogram and the histogram, the average size and spacing between trapsites, and the grade distribution within the trapsites, can be calculated using the model of the General Family of Discrete Distributions. Using such a simulated deposit, the grade distribution for different block sizes can be obtained. The grade distributions become more lognormal-like with increasing block sizes, as the trapsite effect is reduced.

Marine mining on the continental shelf was first attempted in 1900 for gold off the beaches of Nome, Alaska. Attempts continued until 1990 with cutter-suction, airlift and bucket-ladder dredges. Offshore Thailand profitable production of tin resulted from clamshell, bucket-ladder and trailing suction hopper dredges. Today in Indonesia numerous bucket-ladder dredges continue to mine tin. Off the coast of Namibia and South Africa nearly a dozen large and medium sized vessels are engaged in diamond production. The obvious risk results from the working environment. Vessels and lives have been lost in the past. At best the availability of mining equipment is reduced. Leaving aside the marketing and financing aspects, otherwise the most important risks are technical. They manifest themselves as diamond production short-falls with obvious financial consequences. Bias and deficiencies in sampling equipment and procedures may result in misleading grade estimates, even serious under-estimation. Inadequate sampling in terms of sample support and density may result in over-optimistic grade determinations, especially if under-sized mining blocks are outlined. Quantitative measurement of the geotechnical characteristics of the sediments to be mined is an essential stage in a feasibility study. Without a full understanding of the bedrock profile and the overlying sediments the ease, completeness and speed of excavation during the mining process cannot be properly estimated. Both historically and at present the greatest negative discrepancies from production estimates result, not from grade shortfalls, but from significantly lower mining rates than thought possible by the operators. The learning curve in marine, production mining is steeper and longer than is generally recognised by newcomers to the industry. Examples are provided from tin, gold and diamond mining experiences.

Ancient ore deposits provide important clues for the understanding of the origin and distribution of modern submarine hydrothermal systems. An analysis of the formation conditions, tectonic settings, and preservation of ancient seafloor mineral deposits from the recent geological past to the late Archean sheds light on the time-space relationships and diversity of mineral deposit types likely to be found in the modern oceans. Microplate tectonics that characterized ancient ore-hosting greenstone belts were strikingly similar to those active in volcanic arc environments of the western Pacific today. In such complex settings, oblique collisions, opposing subduction zones, and rapid changes in stress regimes (e.g., from compressional to tensional and back to compressional) were common, causing juxtaposition of diverse styles of mineralization. The world-class base metal deposits of the late Archean Abitibi greenstone belt of Canada, for example, were formed within a relatively short time span of ~20 m.y., in response to successive arc rifting, back-arc basin development, and exhumation of accretionary complexes along major arc-parallel crustal-scale faults. Similar processes and environments are important settings for metallogenesis in modern submarine volcanic arcs. Active marginal basins of similar size and representing similar stages of evolution are well represented in the western Pacific today and contain a similar suite of mineral deposit types. Examples from the eastern Manus Basin and adjoining New Ireland Basin (PNG) and in the Lau-Tonga-Kermadec arc-backarc system illustrate these similarities. Certain gold-rich volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits at the southern margin of the Abitibi greenstone belt (e.g., Bousquet and LaRonde deposits in the eastern Blake River Gp.) may be important ancient analogs of newly discovered gold-rich black smoker deposits found along the active fronts of today's submarine volcanic arcs.

Germany?s industry heavily depends on the continuous import of mineral commodities such as manganese, copper, nickel, and molybdenum. Due to the strong increase in metal prices since 2002 Germany?s federal geological survey, the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, hereafter called BGR) applied for a license area for the exploration of deep-sea manganese nodules in the Pacific manganese nodule belt between the Clarion and Clipperton fracture zones. A 75,000 km2 covering license area was eventually granted to the BGR by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in 2006. It is separated into two parts: ?W1? (17,000 km2) and ?E1? (58,000 km2; Fig. 1). The BGR obtained initial information on the abundance and grade of nodules in the license area from samples collected during three cruises with R/V Valdivia and one cruise with R/V Sonne between 1976 and 1978 (Rühlemann et al., 2009). Since the accuracy of navigational data obtained during these cruises is outdated and sample coverage is unevenly distributed and sparse in many parts of the license area, BGR has started a new exploration program to investigate the German license area according to the rules, regulations and procedures issued by the ISA for the exploration of Mn nodules in the Area.

Ferromanganese crusts have traditionally been considered a potential ore for Co, whereas ferromanganese nodules have typically been considered a potential ore for Ni and Cu. However, both nodules and crusts sequester high concentrations of many metals (Table 1) from sediment pore waters and seawater, many of which are essential for high-tech applications. The resource potential of these rare and valuable metals is poorly known and they are the subject of considerable current research. The need for adequate and dependable supplies of these metals is essential for the development of new technologies. The rare-earth elements have recently received much attention in the scientific and popular press because of their use in so many high-tech applications and because more than 95% of the production comes from China (e.g., Service 2010); consequently, there is concern about the possibility of a significant decrease or even curtailment in exports from China. The lack of a primary source and the inadequate supply of Te have prohibited the development of a Cd-Te photovoltaic solar-cell industry (Hein et al. 2010). Inadequate supplies of many of the elements listed in Table 1 are limiting the development of key high-tech industries, forcing the use of alternative metals that [ ] may result in less efficiency or less favorable properties for a product. The rare-earth elements, Te, and other elements listed in Table 1 occur in high abundances in marine hydrogenetic and diagenetic ferromanganese deposits. Here, we look at the mechanisms by which these rare and valuable metals are incorporated into different genetic types of marine ferromanganese deposits.
