"The Island Copper plant was designed and built by Fluor Utah Ltd, in conjunction with Utah design staff, Originally designed to treat 33,000 tons/day (t/d) of ore, the current average milling capability is 38,000 t/d (Nov'74). The first of six semi-autogenous grinding lines was brought on line in October 1971, startup of the remainder being governed by equipment delivery schedules.The summer of 1973 saw the start-up of an additional three ball mills, and attainment of the present production level. The current process flowsheet is shown in simplified form.CRUSHINGThe crushing circuit is relatively simple, comprising single stage crushing of the ore followed by screening to fine and coarse fractions.The crusher is a 54 x 74in. Allis Chalmers Superior Gyratory with a setting of 9-lOin., driven by a 500-hp motor. Trucks dump on three sides of a rectangular dump pocket. An 84in. x 20ft. link belt apron feeder draws crushed ore from a 250-ton surge bin below the crusher, discharging onto a 72in. wide inclined steel cord conveyor belt. A fixed splitter box at the conveyor discharge separates feed to two parallel Jeffreys 6 x 20ft. vibrating grizzlies for screening into +4in. and -4in. fractions. The fractions are collected on short reversible conveyors which feed the coarse and fine ore stacker conveyors. Trippers distribute ore to outside stockpiles adjacent to, and above, the concentrator grinding 'floor."

"A ball charge dynamics model is presented. Simulation results are compared with observed data showing good correlation. Based on the charge dynamics models, a liner wear model is presented along with some wear simulation results. Using the charge dynamics model with the liner wear model, it is possible to envision the predictions of mill power consumption as a function of liner wear. Further work is needed to validate the liner wear model.IntroductionFrom a process control point of view, industrial systems can be considered stationary or non-stationary. For example, the physical properties, such as geometric and/or material, of a system considered stationary do not change with time. However, this is not true for non-stationary systems such as those found in the mining industry where process dynamics are often violent with wear being an intrinsic process phenomenon.In this paper, a model for ball charge dynamics will be presented along with a description for liner wear. Simulation results for power draft prediction using the charge model will be compared with observed data. Further, liner wear results will also be presented."

"Pipe Open Pit ore is delivered by rail to the Thompson Mill at a rate of 34,000 tons per week. Ore is milled at a rate of 220 tons per hour.Characteristics of the serpentinised peridotite host rock are such that significant deviations from hitherto experienced milling practice became a necessity because of coagulation of the gangue upon cominution.Extensive development work was done in the grinding and classification circuits to better understand the ore characteristics and optimize operating parameters and the use of available equipment. This work ultimately resulted in the change from 30 to 20-inch diameter cyclones.Coagulation of the ore slurry and the characterstics of the sulfide minerals necessitated an ""unconventional approach"" in processing as compared with the beneficiation of Thompson Mine ore.Recent changes in ore characteristics led to testing of antistatic agents to reduce tailing losses."

"A process is proposed for the treatment of phosphate rock for the recovery of uranium and the lanthanides. The process assures the production of phosphatic fertilizers without polluting the environment with radioactive material.IntroductionWhile many processes for uranium recovery from phosphoric acid produced by the H2S04 route are known and utilised commercially, little is known about uranium recovery from phosphoric acid produced by the HN03 route1. Advantages of the latter route are both the elimination of the gypsum disposal problem, and the possibility of radium disposal in a controlled way2. Further, the lanthanides originally present in the rock can be recovered if the nitric acid route is used; they will be mostly lost in the gypsum produced by the sulphuric acid route3. In the present work a scheme for the recovery of uranium and the lanthanides from phosphate rock without interfering with the normal route for fertiliser production is proposed using HN03 as a leaching agent. Attention was also given to uranium decay products and their separation so that they might not contaminate the fertiliser4. Further, an attempt was made to defluorinate the leach solution in order to upgrade the fertiliser and at the same time recover the fluorine5. Rapid analytical methods for the determination of uranium, radium, and lanthanides in phosphate rock were developed6,7."

"Since the autumn of 1973, the world's attention was captured by the startling revelation that conventional energy supplies were not inexhaustible but were in fact quickly dwindling with future shortages imminent until lagging exploration and technology yielded additional energy sources to catch up with the spiralling increase in demand. This situation was precipitated by the Arab Oil Embargo and the resulting soaring cost of world crude oil.During the past few years there has been tremendous activity in the energy field which has had a direct impact on the Inca Metals Company Ontario Division operations. The company's reaction has been to establish an energy management program which will be described later in the paper. First, a brief description of the Inca Metals Company and the primary energy resources which are utilized will assist in putting the program into perspective.The Inca Metals Company, a unit of Inca Limited, is responsible for the production and sale of primary metals products worldwide. The company's operations in the Sudbury District include mines, ore concentrating plants, a Smelter, Nickel and Copper Refineries and an Iron Ore Recovery Plant. The Ontario Division also has a mine and concentrating plant in Shebandowan near Thunder Bay, and a metals refinery at Port Colborne. Inca is the largest producer of nickel in the non-communist world and is also a major producer of copper and platnium group metals."

Tracing of 'float' against the latest ice-flow directions ha!' led to or assisted in discoveries of several mineral deposits in Canada at lP.ast since 1891, e.g., fluorite and corundum in eastern ?Ontario, Steeprock and Josephine iron ore in western Ontario, Malartic, Fisher-Quebec, and Lamaque gold ore, and Vendome zinc ore, in western Quebec, Sullivan zinc and lead sulphides in British Columbia, Orvan Brook or New Calumet sulphide deposit in New Brunswick, Lynn Lake nickel sulphide de-posit in Manitoba, etc. Pebbles or ore boulders whose source has not yet been found include diamonds in the Great Lakes region and ?sulphides in several localities in Ontario and Quebec. Complexity of transport of ore boulders, including non-glacial transport, may be the explanation. Tracing of ore boulders requires knowledge of the Pleistocene history of each particular area (ice flow directions, their ?changes during glacial oscillations, existence of pre-glacial lakes with ice-rafted boulders, later interference by streams, lakes, mass movements). Important also is distinction of till from similar non-glacial deposits and knowledge of the bed-rock geology. Quantitative methods, e.g., pebble counts, maybe applied while tracing magnetite, hematite, or goethite. Fragments of sulphide ores are less abundant in indicator trains, and quantitative methods are less suit-able for tracing them. Heavy-miner-al investigations may give good results for minerals resistant to weathering. Geochemical methods are of value only in the vicinity of ore deposits.

Then, too, the geologists are the story-tellers of our tribe - I am only a hard rock miner.Members of the Cobalt Branch and Cobalters everywhere will agree without question that this Cobalt camp has been the greatest of all influences on Canadian mining. To those who do not know Cobalt, our opinion may seem prejudiced and our statement exaggerated.Be that as it may, discussion on this subject can be profitable, since it is worthwhile now and then to think on 'whence we came' and 'where we are going'.In the revival of interest in the Cobalt camp, we hope our guests may feel some of the old Cobalt Spirit, which has become the Spirit of the North.Visitors may even, while here, catch a glimpse of that whimsical little guardian spirit of the camp - the original goblin, the Kobold - for which Cobalt was named.While Kobold brings that good luck which plays so important a part in mining, he can have his evil moments, as in his original German home. There, when he made the silver disappear from their good ore, they cursed the grey ore, calling it Kobold.Although this little goblin bas frequently upset our best mining plans and geological calculations, be has played the game as well. He placed •some silver on the surface, and when he hid ~t at depth he left dues .for its finding. "Assessment of opportunities to improve mineral processing performance in existing concentrators and in describing undeveloped orebodies is key to improving the business case of a mining company. This assessment has traditionally been performed using the distinct and separate inputs from mineral processing and mineral science.More recently, process mineralogy has been used to integrate these two disciplines. This trend has been driven by the need to develop and process more challenging ore deposits, and has been assisted by the availability of modern automated instruments. Together with the acquisition of a QemSCAN (quantitative evaluation of materials by scanning electron microscope) from CSIRO in Australia, and with the use of a supporting SEM with EDX/WDX capabilities and an XRD, the development of process mineralogy at Falconbridge commenced in 1997.The sampling challenges in presenting a QemSCAN with representative sample material at the polished section level are significant, but have been effectively addressed. The full description of this aspect is beyond the scope of this paper.It is shown that, by use of this approach, the set nature of an orebody can be best exploited with selected flowsheet changes in a concentrator which address the generic characteristics of the orebody. In this way, the flowsheet provides a process that more effectively fits the mineral processing requirements of the ore. This leads to clear and tangible improvements in grade and recovery."

"The mill of Anaconda Britannia Mines is located on the eastern shore of Howe Sound, approximately 32 miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia. The mill has a daily capacity of 3400 to 3500 tons and at the present is treating chalcopyrite-pyrite ore from which only the copper mineral is concentrated. For a clear conception of concentrate filtering and shipping practice at Britannia perhaps a bit of past history should be related.For many years the mill concentrated copper and zinc minerals and intermittently a pyrite concentrate was produced. It was general practice to ship copper concentrate by towed barge down Howe Sound, across Juan de Fuca Strait and thence down Puget Sound to Asarco's smelter at Tacoma, Washington. Zinc concentrate was loaded in hopper bottom rail gondolas spotted on rail barges and towed to rail heads in Vancouver, thence by rail to Anaconda Reduction Works in Great Falls, Montana. Most of the pyrite produced was shipped by ocean freighters to Japan and Taiwan with an occasional barge load of 2000 to 4000 tons to nearby customers in Vancouver and the state of Washington.In recent years, because of smelter shut-downs for one reason or another, mostly strikes, a considerable amount of copper concentrates has been shipped by ocean freight to Japan and in 1971 several lots were loaded in gondola cars and shipped by rail to the Anaconda smelter in Anaconda, Montana, because Asarco's smelter was forced by municipal and state anti-pollution laws to limit the amount of S02 emission from the smelter stacks. Zinc concentrate production was halted in the early part of 1Y70 because of zinc depletion in the ores and pyrite production was stopped in May, 1971, because of a lack of markets.Filter equipment in the Britannia mill consists of conventional disc vacuum filters and reciprocating vacuum pumps. The copper concentrate filter was installed in 1923 as a 6 x 8'6"" American disc type manufactured by United Filter Corporation, The zinc concentrate filter, now converted as a spare for copper concentrates, is also a 6 x 8'611 American disc manufactured by Traylor Engineering and Manufacturing Company and was installed the same year. Formerly, there were, in addition, two 4 x 6' disc filters for pyrite and two 6 x 6' disc filters to de-water bulk flotation concentrates ahead of the regrind mills. Installed vacuum pumps were two Ingersoll Rand 22"" x 811 and one 22"" x 9"". One of the smaller machines has since been scrapped.At the time of the writer's transfer to Britannia in 1965, the entire filter system was operating as a unit using two vacuum pumps and a common filtrate tank with a 2"" SRL filtrate pump for five operating filters. The regrind and pyrite filters were in continuous operation and the co11p('r concentrate filter alternated with the zinc concentrate filter because both copper and zinc concentrates were transp0rted to storage by the same conveyor belt."

Froth depth or interface level is an important control variable in column flotation which can influence both grade and recovery. A common method of locating the level is based on sensing the hydrostatic pressure at one or more points along the column. The level position is then calculated from these pressure readings using an equation which includes the bulk density in the froth and bubbling zones. The precision with which the level is detected depends on how well these density values represent both zones. The calculation of these bulk densities from theoretical considerations is not possible and, therefore, the practice is to estimate them by calibration. Unfortunately, the calibration parameters often do not report the level with an acceptable accuracy. A portable conductivity probe has been developed to detect the position of the interface from conductance measurements across the interface. The location of the interface corresponds to the position where a large change in conductance is observed, which is primarily a consequence of the difference in gas holdup between the bubbling and froth zones. This probe can be used to detect the position of the interface to an accuracy of± 5 cm. The probe can be used while the column is in operation, which allows the on-line calibration of the level detection system. Results obtained in its application in a pilot-scale column (0.91 min diameter) are described.

"Pamour Porcupine Mines of Timmins, Ontario operates two 3,000 ton per day concentrators which receive ore from eight to ten mines in the area. The area milling concept was adopted by Pamour in 1971 and has been used successfully since then. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the advantages and the problems of area milling. Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited operates two 3,000 ton per day concentrators which receive ore from eight to ten mines in the Porcupine region. The area milling concept was adopted as the route to survival for Pamour and has worked successfully. HISTORICAL BACKGROUNDProduction of gold from the Porcupine region in Northern Ontario started in the early 1900's and has been continuous since that time. Some of the major operators were companies such as Mcintyre, Hollinger, Dome, Pamour, Paymaster and the list goes on. An underground survey would reveal hundreds of miles of drifts and raises. The main group of mines extends from South East of Timmins to the Pamour Mine, 15 miles to the east. During the lean years of the sixties when gold prices were low, labour costs were rising rapidly, and ore grades were dropping, many of the area mines closed down their operations."

Without it, we would not be able to enjoy many of the things that we take for granted, such as computers, airplanes and stainless steel appliances in our homes and workplaces, to mention a few.Nickel occurs in nature both as sulphide and oxide ores. Approximately 36% of the nickel reserves in the Western World occur as sulphide and 64% as oxide ores. Sulphide ores respond to concentration processes, whereas, oxide ores do not. Sulphide ores mined at 1% nickel can be readily concentrated to 10% nickel, whereas, oxide ores cannot be concentrated and therefore have to be processed as mined.Laterite ores are normally classified intotwo groups:1. The high-magnesia ores, saprolites or serpentines, are, as a rule, processed by smelting. The main reason for this is that the nickel replaces magnesium in the magnesium-silicate lattice. To be able to recover nickel, the lattice has to be destroyed. This can be achieved by smelting under reducing conditions.Acid leaching is also possible, but in this case, large amounts of MgSO4 or MgCl2 will be produced making it costly to regenerate the acid.2. The high-iron, low-magnesia ores are known as limonite. The nickel is relatively loosely bonded to goethite and hence can be recovered by selective reduction followed by ammonium-ammonium carbonate leaching. In recently developed processes, these ores are also being extracted by acid pressure leaching, with high Ni and Co recoveries.This paper focusses on the production of ferronickel and nickel matte from the highmagnesia ores."

"Westmin Resources operates a mine/mill complex at Myra Falls and produces copper and zinc concentrates with minor associations of gold, silver, and lead from a polymetallic, massive sulphide orebody. Mill flotation performance has historically been plagued by periods of uncontrollably high circulating loads leading to low concentrate grades and below optimal tails. This led to a detailed examination of the flotation process. Locked cycle, and pilot plant data are presented. In addition, plant design and commissioning as well as column cell details are discussed. A comparison between actual and predicted performance is also presented. Benefits realized are higher copper and zinc concentrate grades and improved zinc recovery.PrologueMyra Falls Operations is located at the south end of Suttle Lake in Strathcona Provincial Park. Access to the mine site is provided by a 90km paved highway from Campbell River, British Columbia.The mine and facilities are nestled in the narrow Myra Valley between Mount Phillips and Mount Myra. These steep, rugged mountains rise from the valley floor at an elevation of 900 feet to summits of almost 6000 feet. The steep slopes are heavily wooded with fir, hemlock, and cedar up to an elevation of 4000 feet where a transition to alpine meadows occurs. The summits are craggy rock faces, some capped with glacial ice. Myra Creek winds its way through the valley dropping several hundred feet into Suttle Lake. Precipitation is high at over 100 inches per year, which may include up to 10 feet of snow in winter. The temperature may range from 32° C in summer to -18° C in winter.Myra Falls began production in 1965 with the Lynx Mine, supplemented by the Myra and Price Mines in subsequent years, feeding a 950 stpd mill up until the middle of 1985 when the H-W mine was brought into production. The original mill was replaced with a modern 2700 mtpd facility and in 1988 production was increased to 4000 mtpd.Both Lynx and H-W mines are currently in production producing an average of 3650 mtpd. The ore minerals are primarily sphalerite and chalcopyrite, with subordinate galena, bornite, tetrahedrite, and electrum."

ZEBALLOS is a relatively new mining camp. It is on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 195 nautical miles northwestward from Victoria. Previous to 1934, a small amount of placer gold had been recovered from the Zeballos river and tributary creeks. However, it was not until the winter of 1934-35, when shipments of high-grade gold ore were made from the property of the White Star Gold Mines, Limited, that lode gold mining really began. Since then, several new mines and many promising prospects have been found. Milling in standard sized mills only commenced late in 1938, when the 75-ton mill of Privateer Mines, Limited, and the 50-ton mill of Spud Valley Gold Mines, limited, were first turned over. The most striking feature of the camp is the high-grade quality of the ore as usually mined. At one property, the ore along a drift 650 feet long has ranged from 5.8 ounces per ton to 17.5 ounces, over average vein-widths ranging from 8.3 inches to 14.5 inches in selected blocks along the drift. One . high-grade shipment of 196.6 pounds of ore from the same property contained 142.877 ounces of gold. The present paper deals only with that part of the area in which mining operations are most active, namely the main Zeballos River valley and its tributaries, Spud and Goldvalley creeks. "GENTLEMEN:This paper will deal with centrifugal separation - theory and practical, and since the Knelson Concentrator is the only centrifugal concentrator with a properly fluidized bed, this paper will cover the Knelson Concentrator and its technical and structural advances over the last five years. As I am the person with the most experience in this line, I guess I am some kind of an expert; what kind I’m not sure, but some kind.This type of concentrator truly was developed because I’m lazy and I constantly look for easier ways to do things. My experience in the mining industry was very limited but I did realize in looking at placer operations, which is the application where I spring from, that it was tremendously labour intensive and my first reaction that ""my god, there must be some method or way-of handling product in a more efficient (and you can read that as being able to quickly recover very fine particle gold) way than was being shown at that time"". So, the Knelson Concentrator was born - about 6 or 7 years later. Our first attempt was a cone with about the same degree of slope as our present machine and since we had no knowledge of vibration dampening and centrifugal forces at that point, it was just an idea that this should work.Our first run was one of twenty minute duration. We did make that first machine variable speed by a mechanical belt system and we found that at about 240 rpms we were virtually shaking the gravel plant apart that we were attached to. So the first run was twenty minutes and back to the drawing board. However, that first run produced a concentrate so superior to anything we had seen previously, that we knew without any question, we were definately and accurately on the right track."

"Since 1992, the concentration of gold using gravity methods has progressed to become an important part of production at Hemlo Gold's Golden Giant Mine. Currently, the gravity circuit accounts for approximately 25% of the Golden Giant Mine's Gold production. This circuit consists of a 30 inch Center-Drain Knelson Concentrator and a Shaking Table. The evolution of gravity concentration will be discussed with an emphasis on the economic justification for a gravity circuit as well as the practical aspects and metallurgical impact of operating such a circuit. It will be demonstrated that the operation of a gravity circuit has definite benefits to the operation of the Golden Giant Mill and will continue to play an important role in future gold production.1.0 IntroductionHemlo Gold Mines Inc. Golden Giant Mine is a 3000 TPD underground gold mine and milling facility located 40 km east of Marathon, Ontario. Mining is accomplished by means of sublevel longhole open stoping. The ore is processed using conventional crushing, 3-stage ball milling, conventional cyanidation and CIP processes. The mill and concentrator are described in more detail in other publications1,2.Since July of 1992, the Golden Giant Mine has been using a gravity circuit for gold recovery in the mill's grinding circuit. Despite the fact that gold recovery averages over 96% using conventional cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp processes, the gravity circuit has become an integral part of milling operations. This paper will discuss the economic justification for a gravity circuit as well as the practical and metallurgical aspects of its operation."

"INTRODUCTIONPine Point Mines, operated by Cominco Ltd., is located approximately 55 miles east of Hay River, N.W.T. by the southern shore of Great Slave Lake.The milling operation commenced in the fall of 1965 at a design capacity of 5,000 tpd. An addition which came on stream late in 1968 raised the nominal capacity to 8,000 tpd. Currently the milling rate is 11,000 tpd.The lead and zinc sulphides occur in dolomite host rock. Typical feed grades at present are 2% lead, 5.5% zinc and 5 % iron. When dolomite is present even in relatively minor amounts in the zinc concentrate, it presents serious treatment problems and causes inefficient operation of electrolytic zinc refineries.By 1972, it had become apparent that magnesium rejection in the form of dolomite was deteriorating because of increased plant throughput of less amenable ore. This paper will briefly outline the Pine Point zinc flotation circuit and will discuss the two phase program for reducing the magnesium level in the zinc concentrate. The program included changes and alterations to the flotation circuit and the construction of an acid leaching plant."

Recently, the great amount of funds has been invested in the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure and house of subsidence area of coal mine and mine reclamation. This is a benevolent and popular work, which is highly praised. However, because of complicated collapse area problems in China, especially the less integrated control research in the collapse area of metal mine, and the technological weakness, how to effectively control the subsidence area, restore landscape and ecological environment, and utilize the abandoned mine land, are major issue related to the mining area of sustainable development. The research situation about the formation of metal mine collapse area at home and abroad is reviewed, and then the effect of the collapse area on the mine safety and ecological environment, the existing technical problems and development direction are analyzed. Lastly, the technical measures of the collapse area control and cooperative underground mining is put forward.

Fluorides are present in exhaust gases in the aluminum and phosphate industries. Why would this be?G.G. McKerrow - 1 can't see why indium would be a serious impurity. It does tend to concentrate in flu dusts and if you get enough of it you can recover it and sell it but I have never heard of anyone putting a penalty on it.Question - I once ran into a small copper mine in Peru that had cadmium in the copper concentrate but no zinc. The copper smelter charged a penalty for the cadmium. Why would this be?"

"The St-Honoré carbonatite complex, located 8 miles north of Chicoutimi, Quebec, was discovered in September 1967 as abnormal radioactivity was detected in the course of SOQUEM's aerial surveys. The complex, covered by a shallow layer of Trenton limestone, has been explored by aeromagnetic, ground gravimetric and magnetic surveys, and 12,013 feet of diamond drilling. Its age, from potassium-argon dating, is 650 million years. The carbonatite is approximately kidney-shaped and has a surface area of 6 square miles, 20 per cent of which is explored. It shows a central core of coarse-grained massive dolomitic carbonatite and an outer ring of foliated dolomitic carbonatite.The exploration work to date has resulted in the discovery, in the foliated carbonatite, of an incompletely drilled niobium (columbium) zone of pyrochlore-bearing carbonatite, at least 1,000 by 800 feet in size. This zone contains 5,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.86 per cent Nb205 or at least 15,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.66 per cent Nb205 or 45,000 tons grading 0.48 per cent Nb20s. The pyrochlore contains an average of 64 per cent Nb,Os. The central core contains a zone of rare-earth-bearing carbonatite (as monazite), grading up to 4.5 per cent rare-earth oxide, 3,500 ppm zinc and 290 ppm molybdenum. Stocks of nepheline syenite and magnetite diorite accompany the carbonatite. The total analysis and trace-element contents of typical rocks are presented."
