During 2009 the technical services staff at Barrick Gold Corporation's Australian Business Unit conducted a review of their five underground mines that utilise pastefill as the backfill component for these operations. Of the five mines reviewed three use dry tailings and two use wet tailings plants. The primary aim for these reviews was to determine whether pastefill was the right option to be used, and if not, what where the alternatives. The reviews undertaken focus on several areas including, paste plant operation, reticulation and barricade techniques, the geotechnical requirements for pastefill in regards to the current mining methods, the consideration of alternative methods, capital and operating cost histories compared to initial estimates, and a cost benefit analysis of pastefill against other mining methods. The main benefits from the use of pastefill is increasing the extraction of the resource, reducing or eliminating the need to leave pillars. In some mines the use of pastefill is geotechnically driven, to manage high stress environments or mining induced seismicity. A third benefit of using pastefill in some circumstances is that it reduces dilution, however it is considered that this is not a valid argument for most of the mines reviewed. At two mines no alternative to pastefill was determined, whilst differing extraction and filling strategies were potentially identified at the other three mines. The reviews developed cost benefit curves for those sites that had alternative mining methods to assist in determining whether pastefill is the right option to use for any particular stope. At the grades typically mined in each operation, pastefill was the preferred option to use. In all mines, pastefill was determined to be the best option at this time.

The Razorback Iron Ore Project is a high tonnage, low-grade magnetite deposit that defines a new iron ore district in South Australia. Known since the 1960s, the deposit has come into its own as the iron hungry world demands not only larger tonnages, but higher grade and cleaner magnetite concentrate ores that counterbalance the increasingly dirty haematite ores that are coming into production.Razorback is hosted by the Neoproterozoic Braemar Iron Formation, a tillitic unit that is part of the Adelaidean Geosyncline sedimentary sequence. At Razorback, this formation forms the southern limb of the Pualco Syncline, dipping at 42° to the north and outcropping along a prominent ridge. The formation consists of a series of alternating bedded tillitic and interbedded magnetite units that represent cycles of glacial advances and retreats. Seven cycles, resulting in seven stratigraphic members, are recognised. Members B, D, and G are the thickest, at 30 - 70 m each, and are the target of current investigations. While the bedded magnetite has the highest iron content, typically 35 per cent Fe, the tillitic unit, at typically 26 per cent Fe, has similar iron content in the ground mass but is diluted by the inclusion of iron-poor granite and metasedimentary dropstones. The mineralisation forms a simple dipping tabular body with only minor faulting, folding and intrusives. Grades, thickness, dip, and outcropping geometry remain very consistent over kilometres of strike, presenting an excellent mining proposition.Razorback differentiates itself from other Australian magnetite projects in a number of important ways. It is not a banded iron formation (BIF); it will have low crushing and grinding costs; and it is located in an infrastructure-rich area close to open-access, high capacity rail, to a selection of ports and to gas, electricity, labour and engineering services. Royal Resources has announced an Inferred resource of 277 Mt @ 25.9 per cent Fe. The company is targeting a resource of 500 - 1000 Mt to support a 10 Mt per year concentrate production. Davis Tube Recovery work shows that the ore is capable of producing a concentrate of over 68 per cent Fe with very low deleterious elements. Metallurgical testing confi rms the ore is soft, and with near-zero initial stripping ratio the project will have a low opex. With access to existing critical infrastructure, capex will also be low, ensuring Razorback will be a highly competitive iron producer in this emergent mining district.

The ventilation circuit at the FrogÆs Leg Mine was originally designed to permit mining to progress down to 440 m below surface at a maximum production rate of 500 kt/a, as per the feasibility study. The FrogÆs Leg resource has now been defined down to 640 m below surface at a maximum production rate of 750 kt/a. In order to allow for this increase in production depth and tonnage, it was necessary to upgrade the ventilation circuit.This paper outlines the upgrades to the ventilation circuit that were undertaken and the underlying rationale behind them.CITATION:Llewellyn, A and Varvari, M, 2013. Successful management of geotechnical risk at a mining operation is more than just having a good ground control management plan or using advanced numerical modelling and the latest monitoring technologies. The fundamental requirements for effective geotechnical risk management include identification of potential failure modes, identifying and implementing appropriate controls, and demonstrating the effectiveness of those controls. Effective geotechnical risk management requires an integrated approach by confirming that appropriate risk management systems have been identified and implemented (management plans, procedures etc), and that these systems are executed consistently in the field across all working areas. Development of a thorough integrated auditing process executed by an experienced team of technical subject matter experts with substantial operational knowledge, provides a more complete picture of catastrophic hazard management. Following consistent evaluation criteria allows benchmarking of systems and implementation compliance between the sites being audited, and the results can then be ranked against other operations in an industry database.

The Kwademen Au deposit was discovered in 1977- 1978 following a regional geochemical survey carried out as part of a UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) and BUMIGEB (Bureau des Mines et de la Geologie du Burkina) mineral exploration programme. The climate in Burkina Faso is rather dry, with markedly seasonal rainfall averaging 800 mm pa in the Kwademen project area. The relief is low and the drainage poorly developed, so that soil sampling was preferred to stream sediment sampling. Rocks have been subjected to deep lateritic weathering, so that they are transformed into a mixture of Fe-oxides and kaolinite over depths varying between 30 and 40 m. At the regional stage, soil samples (30-40 cm depth) were collected a a 300 x 500 m grid. The Kwademen deposit was indicated by Cu, Zn, Mo and Au anomalies. Subsequently, an area of 9.2 km2 was covered by a detailed geochemical survey by soil (100 x 50 m) and auger sampling. The regional anomaly was fully confirmed, and subsequent drilling intersected mineralized ore shoots, justifying the establishment of an evaluation project led by the U.N.R.F. (United Nations Revolving Fund) in 1983- 1985.

Many open cut mines extend to depths well below the natural water table level with constant dewatering required to maintain operations. When mining activities cease the groundwater starts to fill the void and pit lakes form. The resultant pit lake is directly connected to the surrounding water table and understanding the hydrological and chemical evolution of these lakes is important for minimising environmental impacts. In Western Australia alone there are currently 1800 mine voids and more than 150 mines operating below the water table (Johnson and Wright, 2003). In conjunction with BHP Billiton Iron Ore, CSIRO has been undertaking research to measure and model rates of evaporation from pit lakes in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. "Sandfire Resources NL- (‘Sandfire’) DeGrussa definitive feasibility study (DFS) identified geometallurgy as a major factor in achieving optimum plant performance at the DeGrussa mine. A geometallurgical initiative was created to proactively investigate this issue, and a key initial achievement was the 2013 paper by Condon et al (2013) on developing a working geometallurgical model from first principles. Significant advancements in Sandfire’s geometallurgical understanding since that publication now shape how information is presented and communicated.The main geometallurgical parameters so far identified as critical factors affecting plant performance are Cu:S ratio, iron sulfide mineralogy, talc carbonate content and sphalerite content. Apart from specific mill strategies, geometallurgical issues have been managed through communication between departments and strategic run-of-mine (ROM) pad management.This paper uses the current theories of geological evolution of the volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit at DeGrussa, to discuss the variability between the orebodies C1, DeGrussa (sea floor mounds) and C4, C5 (sub-sea floor replacement) to highlight the different issues each orebody is expected to encounter when processing.A zone of altered low-grade mineralisation surrounds the main orebodies at DeGrussa, referred to as a halo. Talc minerals are often patchy within this halo and often cause significant recovery issues during processing. This halo has been successfully modelled using MgO as a proxy. The ability to model the talc material assists with both identifying potentially problematic zones for processing and geological interpretation of the ore deposits evolution.Early in geometallurgy studies at DeGrussa it became apparent that it would be useful to identify processing performance prior to mining. This necessitated the incorporation of specific sulfide species into the mining block model. These attributes are interpolated from the logged sulfide estimates allowing a clear picture of the abundance of each mineral type within a defined area.In conjunction with the block model a geometallurgical factor (GMF) graph was developed, identifying sulfide mineralogy based upon mineral assays. These two recent additions to the model provide a clear picture of the nature of the ore sources that will be presented to the processing plant.The future of geometallurgy at DeGrussa will see these tools used to aid mine scheduling with a view to further improve processing recoveries.CITATION:Butler, C, Dale, R, Robinson, S and Turner, A, 2016. Ilmenite (FeTiO3) is the primary global source of titaniumdioxide which is commonly used as a whitening agent in papermanufacture and a pigment in paint manufacture. In WesternAustralia ilmenite is processed by the Becher process (Becher,1963, Becher et al, 1965) where ilmenite particles are feddirectly into the furnace with coal and heated to form acomposite of elemental iron and TiO2. The mechanism of thecarbothermic reduction of ilmenite has been extensively studied(Grey, Jones and Reid, 1973; Jones, 1973; Grey and Reid, 1974;El-Tawil, Morse and Francis, 1993) and is reasonably wellaccepted.

This paper describes the development of an approach to sustainable development for application at the feasibility study stage for a proposed bauxite mine near the community of Aurukun, south of Weipa on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. The general environment for development was complex in all dimensions. In particular, the socio-demographic profile of the Aurukun community (population 1200) characterised it as being amongst the most disadvantaged communities in Australia. The traditional owners of the area, the Wik and Wik-Way people, were at the forefront in the efforts of Indigenous people in Australia to secure land rights over the past 30 years, and they had previous experience negotiating an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (the Western Cape Communities Coexistence Agreement) with Rio Tinto Alcan, the operators of the Weipa bauxite mine. Through this they had shown a well-founded sense of entitlement with respect to the development of resources on their traditional land. The Queensland State Government had recently cancelled an existing mining lease over the bauxite resource as the holder of the tenement had not fulfilled the terms of a development agreement that had been in place for 30 years. The Government was anxious to avoid any future æbankingÆ of the resource, and had decided to offer tenure to the resource on an international competitive basis, subject to the requirements of the Commonwealth Native Title Act 1993. This would require a negotiation process with traditional owners and potentially involve companies with whom the traditional owners had no existing relationship (typically developed during the projectÆs exploration phase) and who possibly had no project development experience in Australia. As well, the State Government envisaged an approach to development that drew on the significant work that industry and other stakeholders had undertaken over the previous ten to 15 years, commencing with the mining, minerals and sustainable development (MMSD) process. This work was aimed at rectifying acknowledged deficiencies with industry recognition of stakeholder interests, in particular with respect to environmental management and socioeconomic development. The approach adopted aimed to define the strategic community interests and sustainable development outcomes to which the development of the resource would be expected to contribute, and to embody these within an easily usable management structure that could be applied to each stage of project development from feasibility study through to mine closure. The logical framework (AusAID, 2006; ICMM, 2005) was the management tool utilised to order the identified interests and desired outcomes. The structure included components aligned with the key areas of development interest expressed by the community, and the initial baseline sustainable development plan (SDP) developed established component objectives, outcomes, indicative outputs and activities for the feasibility stage of the project. This established an objective framework to guide potential bidders when developing their response to the State GovernmentÆs Request for Proposal. The paper will describe the evolution of the competitive process and the parallel process for development of the SDP. While the institutional environment was politically and socially complex, the use of simple visual representations of the environment and the analysis and ordering of issues, objectives and criteria through methods such as stakeholder analysis and the logical framework approach, enable the development of a dialogue on the contribution that the development of a mining project can make to sustainable community development, and for the development of an agreed program of community support to capture the contribution. The use of the logical framework was found to have good functionality for plan development. Achieving plan outcomes though, is highly dependent on the skill of key project personnel in facilitation, team building, conflict resolution and leadership, as well as their ability to influence the behaviour of key stakeholders with the capacity and authority to require the integration of local economic development criteria in to key project development decisions.

Prior to mine development, exploration drilling within the Luise Caldera on Niolam Island encountered gold mineralisation to the northwest of the main Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. This mineralisation was referred to as the Kapit orebody, and ten diamond drill holes were subsequently completed over the area to investigate its economic potential. Several significant mineralised intercepts were returned. These were interpreted using the orebody model developed for Lihir at that time which invoked a strong horizontal control to mineralisation. Additional consideration was given to the elevated geothermal temperatures encountered, the proximity of the mineralisation to the ocean, and its perceived depth below sea level, resulting in the Kapit area being given a low priority for follow up investigation. As a result, no further work was completed over Kapit until recently. The Kapit orebody was the target of an intense diamond drilling programme during 2002/2003. Data from this latest round of drilling has significantly improved understanding of the mineralisation and associated geology. The significant orebody now delineated at Kapit substantially differs from past interpretations, and the latest data has upgraded its economic potential. A resource estimate and other critical studies completed in 2003 enabled an updated reserve statement to be issued in February 2004 including the Kapit mineralisation for the first time. Total Probable Reserves at Kapit stand at 25.2 million tonnes (Mt) at 5.28 grams of gold per tonne (g Au/t), for a total of 4.3 million ounces (Moz) of contained gold.

TSL Concepts and Practical Examples of the Non-Reactive System - Meyco TSL 865 Thin Spray-on Liners (TSLs) have been intensively investigated by mining and chemical industries within the last decade. Apart from the basic concept of spraying thin liners, expectations of the product's performance vary, eg immediate active strata support is seen as a key to control the ground permanently. For many coal mines this is an important factor to reduce maintenance in their roadways and enable permanent production from the long wall. In opposition to a passive mesh system this technology offers immediate active support to the strata. But not only coal mines are interested in TSL technology, there are potential applications in hard rock mines, during shaft sinking, pillar support and as an anti-weathering sealant. This paper will explain the advantages and disadvantages of TSL concepts; it will give examples of successfully applied TSLs with a main focus on the non-reactive and flexible system MEYCO TSL 865 by BASF. Furthermore, it will indicate the limitations and discuss briefly the bearing capacity and reasonable lab testing of such systems.

Mining is a global industry. The conference is a good example of this, as itÆs jointly organised by professional associations from Canada, Australia and South Africa, and has attracted speakers and delegates from around the world. I commend the organisers for their initiative. I am pleased to be asked to participate in this panel û although I would hasten to add I see myself as perhaps an informed observer rather than an expert. It wonÆt be news to most in this room that AustraliaÆs mining sector is booming. As one of the most productive and diversified mineral regions in the world, this activity is also something that has not escaped the attention of CanadaÆs largest mining companies! This means that I follow what is happening in the industry and more specifically what might be occurring here. Two-way investment between Canada and Australia stood at $9.8 billion in 2005 with Canada as the seventh largest overall investor in Australia with $8.22 billion in investments. The majority of this investment is by Canadian minerals and metals companies. In recognition of the importance of Canadian investment in this sector in Australia, I maintain close contact with our companies. By way of example, in the past two months I spent a week in Western Australia visiting Perth and meeting with companies for example, like Teck Cominco and LionOre as well as seeing various Barrick Gold operations in Kalgoorlie. I attended the opening of AlcanÆs new Asia Pacific Headquarters in Brisbane in August and just two weeks ago was in Cowal, NSW for the opening of BarrickÆs new mine there. Having met with BHP Billiton in Vancouver, IÆm equally aware of active Australian mining interests in Canada. This is not designed to indicate how active I am but rather to demonstrate the dynamism in the mining industry and the diversity of Canadian mining interests in this country and Australian interests in Canada.

A numerical model has been developed to simulate the effectiveness and costs of a number of conceptual remedial measures aimed at reducing acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and its tributaries near the Stockton Coal Mine, situated on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Stockton Coal Mine has been in operation over the past 100 years. During that time, seepage from waste rock dumps has contributed to elevated acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. The yearly mean rainfall at the mine site is 6000 mm. The model, developed using GoldSim software, simulates rainfall, run-off and stream discharge for 26 tributaries. It then calculates acidity and metal concentrations in the mine impacted tributaries and the dilution downstream from the mine. The model has been calibrated to measured flow and acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. Acidity and metal loads are removed from the system in accordance with specified efficiencies and capacities of the respective conceptual remedial measures. The user can compare specific remedial measures, or a combination of conceptual remedial measures. The model predicts the acidity and metal concentrations at a number of monitoring stations for any remedial strategy selected by the user. It also calculates the capital and operational costs for that particular remedial strategy. This paper presents the development of the numerical model and describes how the end-user can use it to compare the efficiency and costs of various remedial strategies by running different æwhat ifÆ scenarios.

This paper attempts to highlight some of the problems encountered in the economic exploitation of the deeper coal seams by opencast mining methods. The major cost elements of three methods of overburden removal are examined in relation to the overall cost of winning coal from deeper-lying coal seams. The three overburden removal methods examined are dragline stripping and two systems combining dragline stripping with shovels and trucks at varying depths of overburden. A dragline is, undoubtedly, the most cost effective system of overburden removal for depths of up to 30 metres but it is suggested that, when dealing with incremental overburden depths in excess of 30 metres, engineers should consider carefully the possibility of using a shovel and truck operation, or other system, to augment the use of a dragline.

Despite the large areas of sedimentary basins in Western Australia, the coal resources are very meagre., This is a serious problem for the State, which-at present-lacks any other alternate source of fuel-for power production.. Located coal deposits are all poor in quality and mostly brown coals of little importance. The best..coal suitable for extraction is at Collie, where a black=sub- bituminous non-coking coal is mined. Most other coals recorded are low grade or lignite, with high ash'and moisture content and a low calorific value. Coal was first discovered in Western Australia in the bed of the Irwin River, 50-miles south-east of Geraldton, by the Gregory brothers, explorers, in the year 18+6,. but although investigated, it has never been developed. The most noteworthy discovery of coal was in the Collie River, 26 miles east of Bunbury, by Arthur Perrin in 1883. Production commenced in 1898 and ever since, Collie has continued to be the State's sole producing coalfield.

Tailings dam failures continue to occur worldwide at an unacceptable rate, averaging two events annually over the last 100 years. Furthermore, tailings dams continue to grow in size, increasing the potential release of tailings and water should they fail. Tailings are generally deposited in a slurry state, with the potential to flow if containment is lost. Understanding the generation and propagation of excess pore water pressure on failure is critical to predicting the flow and run-out of tailings. This paper presents numerical modelling using the material point method indicating that tailings run-out processes may be self-enhanced by the excess pore water pressure induced during the collapse of the containment. Moreover, it is shown that geomorphological features, such as the slope and its surface roughness downstream of the tailings dam, influence the pore water pressure dynamics upstream of the advancing toe.CITATION:Llano-Serna, M A, Bu, L and Williams, D J, 2018. Anglo PlatinumÆs Potgietersrust Platinums (PPRust) operates three open pits and plans to excavate 90 Mt of rock in 2007. With pit slopes expected to reach a height of 400 m, the geotechnical department has a key role to play. Over the last four years PPRust has successfully implemented new geotechnical strategies and tactics to reduce risk, improve safety and maximise profitability. A large database of core logging, face mapping and rock testing data has been assembled and used for failure analysis, geotechnical zoning and rock mass ratings. The data has also been used for optimising blast designs on a daily basis through the use of a geotechnical block model. This greatly improves blast fragmentation and therefore loading and milling efficiencies. The slope design process involves limit equilibrium analysis, numerical modelling, rock fall analysis and block modelling. Slope management includes comprehensive limit blasting and visual inspections, and state-of-the-art slope monitoring equipment, namely the GroundProbe radar, Riegl lasers and GeoMoS automated prism monitoring. The risk-consequence approach has been used in slope optimisation, where all the slope analyses, operational controls, costs of failure, economic analyses of various slope designs and fault tree analyses are used to determine the ideal slope designs. These activities added over $25 million of value to the operation and also ensured compliance with Anglo AmericanÆs acceptable risk level. The successful mining of the optimised slopes is to due to the greatly improved geotechnical knowledge and slope management. PPRustÆs geotechnical work is used as a benchmark for Anglo American open pit operations. The focus of the paper will be on the value added to the operation by all aspects associated with slope management.

Schalker Eisenhütte und Maschinenfabrik GmbH, Nordic Minesteel Technologies and Bombardier Transportation have developed an evaluation tool that considers the main cost drivers of the rail, truck and conveyor haulage systems on the market today. In almost every circumstance, the advantages of a haulage solution are clear. A haulage system is outlined that is fully automated, including driverless operation, and that provides increased tonnage, safety and equipment life and reduced maintenance downtime. This paper examines a successful project implemented by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and the Polymathian team at Deswik, aimed at enhancing short-term scheduling processes to reduce vessel turn times in the BMA Central Queensland coal value chain. The project’s objective was to digitalise the planning process to enable planners to make data-driven insights to improve the profitability of the value chain. The strategy involved developing a digital mining system that incorporates data storage, cloud computing, and the ability to meet the integration needs of both internal and external business systems. This was complemented by a sophisticated, optimisation-based, decision-support tool to enhance the planning teams’ ability to make timely and effective decisions.
