The present work proposes a distributed collaborative immersive virtual reality framework for prospective applications in the mining industry. A human-centered approach is described, with people being placed in the central position and surrounded by tasks that are to be carried out. Those tasks can be then achieved through synchronous or asynchronous communication, interactions using properly constructed user interfaces, virtual and/or augmented realities and computer vision. Several examples of such arrangements are presented. One of the applications facilitates an e-learning experience by providing a very familiar object – a book – as a target for users to interact with. Importantly, this system has the potential to provide an ‘enhanced’ teaching medium, as humans tend to remember events/situations better when they experience those events in person, when the immersive factor is involved. The immersive virtual reality environment enables a user to interact physically with various 3D objects and experience behaviours, which in turn reinforces the idea that doing leads to learning. This prototype system can be implemented as an efficient and cost effective e-learning and training platform for different engineering domains. At another level, the same technology can be used in the tele-operation of mining equipment for the future mine.

The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 2.6 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore annually from sub level open stopes of which approximately 40% comes from the narrow Racecourse orebodies below 15 level.Geologically the stoping environment is complicated by highly fissile shale hangingwalls and below 17 level by a high stress regime.The realization that major hangingwall failures and generally poor ground conditions could lead to serious dilution problems, and ultimately production shortfalls, prompted investigations into the use of low strength explosives.

"Extensive literature surveys, research in the project environment and personal experiences both within and consulting to project teams have revealed some consistent ‘people factors’ that contribute most to ultimate project success. Outside of purely technical and business case issues, there are a small number of leadership characteristics – probably only ten – that if correctly applied can positively leverage a team’s impact on project success.Of the top seven project success characteristics that were consistently highly rated in a recent study, five of them were around leadership. The authors have focused on this topic, noting that good leaders need to display the following traits:passionate commitment to deliveryconsistent modelling and reinforcement of correct values and behaviourfocus on managing relationships well and energising teams and individualscarefully clarifying project vision from front-end loading stages onwardseffective decision making.Not every project manager can and does practise these behaviours all of the time, but being aware of them and receiving training or facilitation in improving their application of these skills can equip project managers with the essential tools to markedly improve their own performance and that of their teams.This paper draws upon experiences in the field and provides lessons – both good and bad – to illustrate. As well as examining leadership traits, the way in which a leader can establish, organise, motivate his or her team and ultimately lead them to success is examined. Metallurgists operating Knelson Concentrators (KC) often rely on manufacturerÆs recommendations for selecting operating parameters, such as fluidising water flow rate and cycle time. Recent studies have shown that these parameters are not only dependent on the machine parameters but also on the feed characteristics, such as size distribution of the gold and gangue particles and the composition of its constituent minerals. It is known that a particle entering a KC initially traverses a circular path within the bowl. For a particle to maintain a given orbit, the required centripetal force must be supplied by external means. It has been argued that this centripetal force, which is dependent on the mass of the particle, its radial position and the rotational speed of the bowl, is provided by the fluid drag force created by inwardly moving fluidising water and the BagnoldÆs force created by the particle/particle collisions. Depending on the fluidising water flow rate, one of two situations can occur where the porosity of the bed increases or decreases, which influences the amount of material retained within the bowl. The amount of material of a given size and density retained in the bowl is thus dependent on the extent of the centripetal force provided. Based on the above concept, a criterion that can be used to predict the amount of material recovered in the bowl has been derived and validated by experimental data. It may also be construed that this criterion demarcates the transition of the bed from a packed-bed state to a fluidised state. By identifying the transition values for the different constituent mineral particles in the feed, it is possible to estimate the optimal fluidising water flow rate that would maximise gold recovery while minimising gangue recovery. In addition, the kinetics of gangue displacement by incoming heavy mineral particles were also studied using synthetic mineral mixtures. The experimental data suggests that this process follows first order kinetics and that the build-up of heavy mineral reaches a maximum. A model has been proposed to predict the optimal batch cycle time for a KC in terms of the feed characteristics and machine operating parameters.

The brown coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley are ideal for open cut mining and this method has been used since the start of coal winning in 1894. Operations at the main Yall9urn open cut commenced in 1922, but after a few years the main excavators were replaced by German continuous excavators and subsequent developments of Yallourn and the newer Morwell open cut have been based on this type of plant. The reasons for preferring continuous to intermittent excavators in the Latrobe Valley are indicated in this paper.Under the pressure of post-war conditions, and from their long experience and ability, German engineers have recently made substantial improvements in their continuous excavators and these developments have been enhanced by some American innovations. These changes have extended the economic limits of open cut mining and also serve to emphasize the close inter-relation between the nature of coal and overburden deposits, excavator design and methods of operation.As an aid to descriRing recent excavator developments, this interdependence is demonstrated by means of diagrams which show typical methods of operations, together with examples of actual machines using these methods. The types of excavator dealt with are mainly those in use at, or destined for Yallourn or Morwell open cuts, together with additional types used in U.S.A. and Western Europe. For completeness, and also because they will continue in service at Yallourn and Morwell for some years, rail-mounted dredgers have been included in this paper even though in Europe they are now regarded as obsolescent.Explanations are given of how the intrinsic qualities of Latrobe Valley brown coal and overburden have sometimes prevented overseas plants from operating with the full efficiencies and/or in the methods visualized by the manufacturer, and references are made to the modifications and investigations being undertaken to overcome these problems.A compresensive bibliography is given. Dates shown on illustrations are not commissioning dates of the plant concerned, but the year when photographed.

A mining company has entered into contractual commitments to supply certain quantities of its product to clients in each time period. Failure to fulfil its obligations would damage its reputation as a reliable supplier. The planned production would normally be sufficient unless major problems such as highwall failures, roof falls, natural disaster, or strikes that interrupt production or delays in obtaining environmental permits, occur. To overcome these difficulties, the company may be able to obtain more of the commodity: from its strategic stockpile (if there is sufficient there); by buying it on the spot market; or for some commodities such as gold and uranium, by leasing it. Two sources of uncertainty, the spot price of the commodity and the occurrence of serious incidents that interrupt production, are considered. For simplicity it is assumed that the commodity price follows a geometric Brownian motion, that productions incidents have a binomial distribution, that they are independent from one time period to another and that they do not affect prices. A branching tree structure is used to model the joint evolution of prices and production incidents. The aim of this research project was to evaluate the companyÆs options for fulfilling its contractual commitments. When evaluating these options, multi-stage stochastic programming with recourse was used to solve this problem because in addition to providing the dollar value of the project, it gives decision-makers the æroadmapÆ to reach the optimal value. That is, how much material should be bought/sold on the spot market, how much to add to/subtract from the stockpile, how much to lease and in the worst case what the shortfall would be, for each time period as a function of the current spot price and breakdown status. A case-study over a five-year period is used to illustrate the proposed procedure. In this study the production would be sufficient to cover the companyÆs contractual commitments unless production incidents occur. Focus is on evaluating the impact of the quantity initially in the stockpile on the value of the project when the commodity market is tight, that is, when only small quantities can be bought on the spot market or by leasing.

Waihi Gold Mining Company Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Normandy Mining Limited, operates the Martha gold mine, located in the township of Waihi, New Zealand. The operation, an unincorporated joint venture, comprises Normandy Mining Limited (67.070/0) and Otter Gold Mines (32.94%). Since gold was first discovered at Waihi in 1878, it has formed a key part of the region's economy. In 1909 the Waihi mine was described in a report to Parliament as æthe most important gold mine in Australasia and one of the greatest in the world.Æ That was a record year for production, with 416,813 tons of ore mined and some 1,120 men employed. Today the mine produces up to 1,250,000 tonnes of ore annually, and the project employs some 234 men and women. In 1999 the value of the gold and silver produced ($59 million) made up 47% of Waihi's estimated GDP. Waihi Gold has made significant contributions to the Waihi economy, community and the Hauraki region as a whole. Since the mine was re-opened in 1987, thousands of local people have benefited from the mine. In 1999, consents were granted allowing an extension to the mine life (the Extended Project) and this will result in a further seven years of economic benefits resulting from mining activity. The Company has undertaken extensive consultation throughout project planning, construction, operations and rehabilitation. Ongoing liaison and involvement with all community sectors, including Tangata Whenua and Iwi, local residents, recreational groups and schools remains an integral part of the operation. Throughout the life of the modern Martha Mine, the Company has actively supported the local community in the form of donations, sponsorships, the provision of amenities, and by participating in community events. A well established environmental team exists at the site. Environmental and community performance is measured by an independent five-assessment process, and the Company is committed to achieving excellence through ongoing improvement programmes and staff awareness. When the mine is closed, the open pit area will be transformed into a recreational lake, and the tailings storage facilities will be rehabilitated to become a combination of wetlands, grassed areas and ponds. Resources will be provided by the Mine to ensure the rehabilitated site remains in a safe and self-sustaining, stable condition in perpetuity. The mine is regarded as a showcase on a world standard of how a modem mining operation can successfully coexist with the nearby community.

An innovative separator known as the HydroFloat cell has been developed specifically for the upgrading of coarse particles that are difficult to recover using conventional flotation cells. The novel characteristic of this separator is the formation of a hindered teeter-bed of fluidised solids into which small air bubbles are injected. The air bubbles selectively attach to hydrophobic particles and form particle/bubble agglomerates that segregate atop the teeter-bed due to their lower apparent specific gravity. The low-density agglomerates are eventually carried into the product overflow launder by the rising current of teeter water. Hydrophilic particles remain in the teeter-bed and are discharged to underflow as a high solids content tailing. Benefits of this hybrid flotation-density separator include enhanced bubble-particle contacting, increased particle residence time, and very low air demand. Test data indicate that significant improvements in the recovery of coarse particles can be achieved using this innovative technology. This article describes the theoretical basis for the development of the HydroFloat cell and provides an overview of recent pilot-scale tests conducted for the phosphate industry.

Hillgrove Resources (HGO) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and from 2011 to 2016 the geology team experienced a consistent negative reconciliation between grade control estimated copper (Cu) grade and the mill received grade. For the first four years, despite trialling various grade control strategies, the monthly variance between geology and mill copper grades fluctuated between -5 per cent to -17 per cent Cu metal depending on the style of mineralisation.In 2015, HGO embarked on various measures which resulted in changes to grade control practices under the advice of consultants. These changes to grade control sampling, estimation and block out practices resulted in six to seven months of consistently poor Mine to Mill reconciliations from -25 per cent to -28 per cent Cu.In an effort to mitigate these poor reconciliations the geology team reintroduced the preconsultant block out and geology driven grade control methods. Blockout reconciliations from this point emulated those seen originally from -8 per cent to -12 per cent (Cu per cent). Early in 2016 the geology team introduced conditional simulation for grade control as opposed to ordinary kriging to better characterise the grade distribution, introduced separate estimation parameters appropriate for every zone of mineralisation, implemented a maximum profit function to optimise the selection of ore and waste, and retained the geology driven block out processes. Since March 2016 the mine has experienced consecutive months of positive Mine to Mill reconciliations, the first seen in six years. Year to date the expected copper metal is within 1 per cent of mill reconciled copper metal.This paper will compare the various sampling methods, estimation algorithms and block out procedures from the past six years to arrive at a robust open pit operating procedure applicable for mineralisation with high short scale variability.CITATION:Reid, M and Arbon, H, 2017. Two adjacent open pits in Mali hosted by deeply weathered saprolitic materials were mined consecutively over the course of approximately 12 months. During excavation, both pits experienced significant displacement and tension cracking as the result of deeper than expected depth of weathering coupled with relatively steep slope angles and significant groundwater. In response, geotechnical and operations teams overcame numerous monitoring challenges with prisms and radar to develop a simple and effective monitoring system coupled to a Trigger Action Response Plan (TARP) which enabled continued safe operations while reducing ore loss. Observations of previous slope performance of these two pits allowed for greater confidence in empirical failure runout calculations that was used to specify the standoff widths for the exclusion zones in the pit. Back analysis of the slope as-built performance after the first indications of slope distress was also conducted. The back analysis was used to confirm rock mass parameters for modelling while being utilised as a reality check for the stability analysis. The stability analysis indicated that leaving a large step-out or buttress would not prevent the displacement, resulting in some ore being sacrificed to ensure the safety of personnel. Key learnings from this experience highlight the importance of: • up-to-date geological interpretation of the depth of weathering • ensuring slope design guidance is reviewed and updated as latest information (ie geology and monitoring) is received • having multiple complementary slope monitoring methods to ensure redundancy • ensuring visual observations and as-built performance are utilised as a reality check to provide greater confidence in stability analysis and design guidance.

There has been much progress on the issue of acid drainage over the past 20 years; however, significant challenges remain. The International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) is attempting to address them by globally coordinating acid drainage information sharing and research. INAP pursues three branches of activities: it links AD research, practice, and people; it organises, sponsors, and participates in regional workshops as a forum for technology transfer; and it instigates and funds key acid drainage research projects. Through these activities INAP is helping the industry deal with what is arguably its most serious legacy issue.

A new engine family has been developed by Caterpillar Tractor Co. for application in off-highway trucks. This family, the 3500 Series is available in three configurations, covering a 600-1200 kilowatt range. This engine series incorporates the latest in design technology, stringent functional specifications for servicing ease, fuel economy, reliability, optimum performance and parts interchangeability. TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION The 3500 Series Engine has been under development by Caterpillar for over eight years and has undergone extensive testing in the laboratory and in field prototype units. - The engine configuration is a 600 Vee in 8, 12, and 16 cylinder versions. - The intermittent power output per cylinder is 75 kilowatt (100 HP). Net power for off-highway trucks is 600-1200 kilowatt (800-1600 Hp) depending on engine configurations. Bureau of Medical Inspection, Broken Hill, New South Wales.INTRODUCTIONFor a considerable time it has be3n realised that the pathological changes produced in human lungs by the inhalation of free silica varied, not only according to the amount of silica inhaled, its particle size and the period during which it was inhaled, but also according to other mineral elements which might be admixed with the fine silica dust and inhaled along with it, or inhaled subsequently to the silica containing dust. It was observed that, in many instances, these admixed dusts tended to inhibit the action of the free silica in causing injury to the lungs, as well as the development of certain complications, whilst in other cases it was felt that certain substances could actually accelerate the tissue damage caused by the silica.A fresh impetus to the problem of the prevention of the development of silicosis was given when, in 1937 and 1939, Denny, Robson and Irwin published papers entitled "The Prevention of Silicosis by Metallic Aluminum." Working at the same time at the Saranac La.boratory, and quite independently, and using a colloidal aluminum hydroxide, Gardner arrived at the same conclusions as Denny, Robson and Irwin, namely, that in experimental animals the development of silicotic changes could be prevented if eithertogether with the silica, or subsequent to its inhalation...

In January 1998 Sydney Water Corporation formed an Alliance with construction contractor Transfield, and engineering consultants Connell Wagner and Montgomery Watson, to design and construct the Northside Storage Tunnel. The project is part of WaterPlan 21, Sydney WaterÆs strategy for cleaning up the harbours, bays, rivers and beaches within its business area. WaterPlan 21 is an integral part of the NSW GovernmentÆs $3.1 billion Waterways Package which establishes targets and initiatives for sustainable wastewater management within NSW. The project is being delivered under an Alliance Agreement, which has a number of non-traditional features in terms of partnering, management principles and design and construct. Construction began in mid-1998 and is on target to meet the completion deadline for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

COALEX Pry Limited operates two underground steaming coal mines on the western edge of the Sydney Basin near Lithgow, New South Wales. Baal Bone Colliery uses longwall technology for an output of over two million tonne/year while Clarence Colliery currently uses continuous miners and breaker line supports for an output of two million tonnelyear.A computerised geological database and modelling system has been implemented to service these mines routinely, as well as several outlying prospects. The database is constantly upgraded for drillhole information, surveyed spot levels on the surface and underground, quality sampling details, surveyed mine workings and geological mapping. This information is edited on a routine basis, allowing dynamic modelling of key aspects of geology for ongoing operations.

Northparkes Mines is a joint venture between Rio Tinto and the Sumitomo group and is operated by Rio Tinto to produce copper concentrate from ore sourced from open cut and underground. Underground ore is mined with an owner operator workforce using the block cave method from the E26 deposit, with the first lift of the cave now completed. Development of the Lift 2 block cave commenced in March 2001 using a contract workforce. The Lift 2 Project required the mining of 14 700 m of decline and lateral development to establish a new mining horizon at the 9450 level and to develop two new conveyor declines. Also included in the scope was the excavation of a Crusher chamber to house the jaw-gyratory crusher. This paper describes the excavation of the hydroset chamber and orepass that sit immediately underneath the Lift 2 Crusher chamber. It includes risk assessment, planning, development of method statements and standard operating procedures, through to the excavation of the orepass and the installation of ground support in seismically active ground. There was a major ground failure in the backs of the conveyor feeder chamber during its excavation, which affected the excavation of the orepass due to its proximity to the breakthrough site.

RME has a vision for a new grinding plant operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by modifying liner design for maximum life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to see new liners designed for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent mill relines but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance, not maximum life. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. Following the introduction, the first section of this paper provides an update describing recent and significant developments within RMEÆs range of Mill Relining Systems, the enabling technologies which permit more frequent liner exchange without incurring additional downtime imposts. The second section outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ commercial model, developed either intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.

A new algorithm has been investigated for three-dimensional open pit designs to improve the dynamic cone approach which utilises the dynamic programming technique. The conventional dynamic cone method was improved by introducing examination processes: 1. whether any negative blocks are included in a unit cone or not; and 2. whether it is possible or not to leave the negative blocks unmined in the unit cone without disturbing the geometric condition imposed on the slope angle of the cone. The newly developed algorithm was applied to a large-scale open pit copper mine in a planning stage and the results have been compared with those obtained by the conventional methods.

In the heavy minerals industry wet high intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) are widely applied for primary magnetic separation of magnetic minerals and non-magnetic minerals. This piece of equipment is well known for its robustness to handle a wide range of feed conditions and still produce stable product qualities and yields. A heavy mineral production plant aimed to increase production through their WHIMS plant containing 11 duties and 26 units. Instead of adding new units an alternative approach was followed to firstly maximise the efficiency of the current circuit and secondly to consider possible reconfiguration of the circuit to produce additional product tons for minimal capital investment. In order to characterise the current circuit’s efficiency, identify pockets of excellence and determine the areas for improvement the whole circuit was surveyed several times and mineral mass balances were drawn up.This paper aims to: discuss the modelling process of the WHIMS circuit,explain the calibration and validation process followed to ensure the accuracy, anddemonstrate the sensitivity analysis performed on the different options. From this analysis an efficiency criteria was developed to compare different circuit configurations that enabled the production plant personnel to make an informed decision on the way forward.
