Reclamation of surface-mined landscapes is commonly defined only in terms of biological productivity. Other critical concerns associated with surface mining include the long-term quality of groundwater and stability of the postmining landscape. Meaningful reclamation design must address all these concerns. Reconnaissance of postmining landscapes indicates that three types of instability occur in these settings. These include: area-wide settling, localized collapse, and piping. Area-wide settling is most pronounced during the first year after contouring but appears in precontouring valley areas where frozen materials are contoured with a dozer. Although severe in some settings, development typically ends within one year. Piping appears to be a severe and long-term problem in some settings. Piping usually begins soon after contouring ceases and may continue for several years. In some postmining landscapes, piping has only started to develop after as many as five years of apparent stability. Piping is controlled by a combination of physical and chemical conditions in the spoil. A key factor is the presence of highly dispersive materials in the near surface. The design of a stable postmining landscape requires the integration of severe critical factors. These include: 1) detailed knowledge of the distribution of overburden materials with emphasis upon the delineation of highly sodic sediments; 2) proper equipment selection; and 3) a consideration of climatic factors. For reclamation to be successful, it must consider the entire landscape, not merely the soil zone. Any approach short of this will lead, at best, to temporary solutions.

In order to meet increasing demands for water supply in the next millennium, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have identified the need for a major new water treatment and transfer scheme. The project now under construction will comprise a 1.2 km long raw water aqueduct, a major new 0.25million cubic metres per day water treatment works (with space for upgrading to 1.2Mm³/d), a 12.1 km long treated water aqueduct and a primary service reservoir. "IntroductionShot-saws are used for sawing rock throughout the dimension stone industry especially in granite quarry mills. Shot-saws, as currently designed, have an inherent wear problem which leads to slow cutting rates and repetitive blade changes which consumes much time. Because the saw blades are made from steel the abrasive shot used with them is limited to a certain hardness which effects the over-all efficiency of the sawing operation. Suggestions are made toward optimization of blade design and the sawing process. Blade DesignA common steel blade design is shown in Figure I. Note the perforations in the blade. These perforations or holes in the blade serve two or three purposes. The most obvious reason is to allow the abrasive shot a pocket in which to collect at the bottom of the blade, so that it can be distributed from these pockets into the cutting zone underneath the blade. The abrasive is fed to the saw in a slurry and usually comes in from the top. The blade must then cut a kerf wider than itself in order that the abrasive grains have a path leading from the top of the blade, down along its sides, and finally reaching the pockets and cutting zones. This circuitous path followed by the abrasive leads to side wear on the blades and high friction which can lead to blade buckling in severe cases. However, the fluidized path of the abrasives down the sides of the blade serves another purpose which is a positive gain if conditions are properly controlled. The abrasive slurry interacts with the perforations of the blade, the blade itself and the rock. This gap and the perforations in the blade, which are fluid filled, are sites of constant shearing motion. Eddy currents form in these gaps and pockets which tend to stabilize the blade by setting up balanced hydrodynamic forces which otherwise might not form in a non-perforated blade. A stable blade produces a more uniform cut in the rock. The third and final reason for the perforations are to allow the blade to wear in such a fashion that new pockets are always being formed and, consequently, new cutting surfaces between these pockets are also formed."

The future of the world's minerals industries is often painted as bleak. Peter Drucker has repeatedly proposed that the demand for minerals has become "uncoupled" from world economic growth.' This implies that, while mineral demand was in the past linked to the growing demand for and consumption of goods and services, further world development will not require substantial mineral inputs. Lester Thurow noted that for these reasons the US minerals industry is diminishing in scale and economic importance.2 There is some documented evidence of such uncoupling, and the demand for minerals may indeed diminish in the future. But such announcements are, to this point, no more than speculation. For instance, is it not just as likely that renewed environmental concerns will cause increased demand for the relatively innocuous environmental properties of metals, replacing plastics? And even if the prophesied demand decreases do occur, a sufficient fall in metal prices due to technological advances could increase the quantity of minerals demanded above current levels, in spite of leftward shifting demand curves. Thus, worldwide mineral production activity may increase or decrease in the future and no one can say whether more or fewer of the earth's citizens will become involved in the extraction and processing of minerals.

The aim of this paper is basically to show progress in the study of nanosecond processes involved in the disintegration and breaking-up of mineral complexes with fine noble metals. We studied the influence of nanosecond High-Power Electromagnetic Pulses (HPEMP) on the physical and technological properties of refractory gold-containing ores and beneficiation products. Experimental data are presented to confirm the formation of breakdown channels and selective disintegration of mineral complexes as a result of pulse irradiation, which makes for efficient access of lixiviant solutions to precious metal grains and enhanced precious metal recovery into lixivia during leaching. Preliminary processing of gravity concentrate with a HPEMP resulted in significant increase of gold and silver extraction into lixivia during the cyanidation stage, with gold recovery increased by ~31% (from 51.2% in a blank test to 82.3% after irradiation). Gold recovery from stale gold-containing dressing tailings products increased after pulses-irradiation from 8-12% to 80-90%.

Risk quantification in grade-tonnage curves is critical for capital investment in mining projects and can be obtained through geostatistical simulations of orebodies. A practical difficulty may arise in multi-element deposits, as the joint modelling of the related attributes using the traditional co-simulation approaches is computationally intensive and may be impractical for use in the industrial environment. This paper presents the construction of risk-integrating grade-tonnage curves for a complex copper deposit in northern Brazil, by jointly simulating its key geochemical attributes of interest: Cu, Fe and K. The joint conditional simulation of these elements is based on Minimum/Maximum Autocorrelation Factors (MAF). MAF is an approach, based on principal components, that spatially decorrelates the variables involved to non-correlated factors. MAF’sspatial decorrelation at any lag distance is the main and critical difference of this approach from the principal component approach attempted in the past. In the MAF approach, the independent factors are individually simulated and back-transformed to the conditional simulations of the correlated deposit attributes that reproduce the cross-correlations of the original variables. The solvent extraction section of an old Uranium Plant in the Vaal River region (North West Province in South Africa) produced a substance called CRUD (Chalk River Unidentified Deposit) that formed within the aqueous/organic interface of the settler of the solvent extraction circuit. The CRUD was deposited together with gold tailings to the tailings dam many years ago. Previous research done on the CRUD confirmed that exposed CRUD leaches Mn and Ni at concentrations that are well above their acceptable risk limits as well as Zn that leaches at concentrations that are slightly lower than its acceptable risk limit. Soil washing and bioremediation technologies were employed to treat the contaminated soil.   Various laboratory test work and the pilot scale studies were conducted in parallel with each other and the results of the laboratory studies were used to determine critical parameters. Four lixiviants, ie sulfuric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid and ethylene diamine acetic acid were tested at three concentration levels ie 0.001 M, 0.0001 M and 0.00001 M, respectively. Column tests showed that the leaching of the heavy metals increases as the soil porosity increases. Silica sand was added to increase porosity of the contaminated soil. Highest Mn removal was achieved mainly by sulfuric and oxalic acid at 0.001M at all soil levels. EDTA was significantly efficient in the removal of Ni and Zn. The recovery of heavy metals, particularly Mn, decreased as the depth of sampling increased.   Heterogeneous bacteria and filamentous organism plate counts were conducted to evaluate the growth of the bacteria and filamentous organisms in the soil. Results showed that more organism growth took place in the bioremediated soil with a fertilizer added to it. The leaching of metals from the soil that was bioremediated in the pilot study was generally higher than the extraction of the metals from the soil that was leached with no bioremediation carried out. The results from this study suggest that the leaching of heavy metals from the contaminated soil is to a large extent dependant on the pH of the leaching solution. By increasing the soil's porosity and bioremediating the soil, higher extractions of metals were achieved.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to develop and evaluate a training workshop for mine safety training personnel. The workshop was based on the Instructional Development Institute (IDI) which has been used for nearly ten years to train educators and administrators in the application of a nine-step model for defining, developing, and evaluating instruction. The Mining Instructional Development Institute (MIDI) was developed by investigators at the University of Southern California as a two-phase project. Phase I involved the modification of the six-day IDI program (including audiovisual presentations, workbooks, games, and exercises) for use by mine safety trainers as a workshop lasting three and one-half days. Phase II involved the evaluation and validation of the prototype MIDI workshop by means of a two-stage jury of experts and a prototype field trial. On the basis of data collected in the validation process it was determined that the institute provided an effective and useful method of instruction in mine safety training and that the institute would be especially valuable for mine safety training administrators and supervisors.

Caterpillar has introduced its 5090B front shovel, to work with 40 to 70 st (36 to 63 t) trucks. The new unit replaces Cat’s 5080 hydraulic excavator. The 5090B offers more engine horsepower, higher flow, greater digging forces, higher swing torque, faster swing speed and more drawbar pull than its predecessor. It can also handle larger bucket sizes than the previous model. These improvements enhance productivity and make the 5090B a high-volume material handler for hard rock and aggregates producers.

Virtually every coal seam in Appalachia will at some time be subject to multi-seam interaction (Wu et al, 1987). Many such problems result from seams which lie in close proximity or have split and lie within thirty feet vertically of one another. Existing techniques for multi- seam design have concentrated on conditions where the entire inner burden is not the failing member and are unsuitable for ultra-close multi-seam design. Structural integrity of the inner burden must be maintained if two superimposed seams are to be mined separately and under- standing possible failure mechanisms of the inner burden is an essential first step in the design process.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Kainantu Project is located within the New Guinea Thrust Belt in northern Papua New Guinea. The area has a long history of exploration and production, with the discovery of alluvial gold in 1928 followed by the discovery of vein deposits of gold and copper at Kora in the 1950s and the current Irumafimpa vein gold mine. Current resources on the Kora-Irumafimpa Vein System (KIVS) stand at 1.5 Moz Au, 5 Moz Ag and 217 Mlb Cu.Mineralisation in the region includes gold, silver and copper associated with mid-Miocene age mafic to felsic intrusions. The KIVS occupies a broad north-west-trending mineralised zone more than 2.5 km long and 200 m wide, with the Kora, Eutompi and Irumafimpa veins on the western side and the Judd and Upper Kora veins on the eastern side. Economic mineralisation occurs in two closely related events occupying the same strongly structurally controlled shearing (quartz-Au-telluride veins and sulfide Au-Cu-Ag veins with free Au) and is best described as a significant intrusion-related event with both epithermal and mesothermal facets that does not appear directly related to known porphyry Cu-Au systems as seen at the surface. Significant wolframite is associated with vein quartz of a slightly older age but also occupies the same shear system.The KIVS occurs within a larger mineralised area of approximately 5 × 5 km. It has complex multiphase intrusions, breccias and diatremes that are only partly delineated by drilling and comprises multiple occurrences of Au-bearing veins and porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. The area is considered to have high potential for extending the current resources and is being actively explored. The proposed recommencement of mining activities recognises the complexity of the KIVS and later disruptive faulting and will require tighter grade control systems, targeted mining techniques and a gravity circuit to maximise free Au recovery.CITATION:Vigar, A J, Lueck, B, Taylor, I, Prendergast, K and Dale, P, 2015. The work described was conducted to develop standards for the application of wire rope clips on wire rope. These standards include optimum number of clips and clip nut torques for wire rope sizes 1/4 through 2-1/4 inches, when used for forming an eye attachment in wire rope. Wire rope test specimens with clip attachments were load tested on tensile testing machines to determine an effective combination of clip nut torques and number of clips for each size of wire rope to develop efficiencies above 90 percent of the catalog ultimate rope strength.

The geometry and morphology of a set of low-angle fractures around a stope in a deep Witwatersrand gold mine are explained in terms of extension fractures forming under variable conditions of stress. Primary extension fractures (E1) form some distance ahead of an advancing stope along the s1, s2 plane. With stope advance, a couple of these fractures end up in a stress regime conducive to transpressional shear and a secondary set of extension fractures(E2) is formed at a high angle to the primary fractures. i.e. at a low angle to the stope. As the E2 fractures are undermined, they migrate into a stress regime of transtensional shear and a third set of extension fractures (E3) may develop between E2 fractures. These have sigmoidal shapes, being parallel to the E2 fractures at the E2 discontinuity where s3 is negative, and curved through the un-fractured rock between E2 fractures where s3 is positive at the instant of fracturing. The fractures all display fractographic features characteristic of dynamic extension failure with striae indicative of the direction of rupture propagation and the local, instantaneous orientation of s1.

How to monitor and control the support and surrounding strata system on a longwall face effectively is one of the major research problems in ground control. Based on observations on movements of the support and surrounding strata of face No. 2703 of Dongpang colliery, the relationship between the downtime related to support and surrounding strata and other influential factors is analysed systematically in this paper. Monitoring indices and control measures are then determined by taking corresponding downtime as an objective function. When the monitoring method, developed from the above findings, was used on face No. 2703, the downtime due to support and surrounding strata was remarkably reduced, and the face advanced normally.

Expert Online, as a software system, is aimed at providing plant operators in the minerals industry with effective training and on-the-job assistance. It incorporates a number of features to achieve this goal, of which the most important is its ability to explain the dynamics of the plant and control system in simple language, mimicking an informed plant expert who has online access to the inner workings of the plant and control system. This is made possible by a novel form of Artificial Intelligence, called the Interpreting Expert System. Previous implementations of the IES were only capable of explaining controller actions. Expert Online will extend this capability to also perform the more difficult task of explaining process behaviour. Expert Online will implement three main processes, namely the accumulation of data from the controllers and plant models, the interpretation, processing and filtering of that data and lastly communicating the relevant information to the user, both as written messages and in other audio-visual forms. Although Expert Online is aimed at the operator, other plant personnel, like supervisors and plant managers, will also benefit from it. This paper focuses on the structural and functional design of Expert Online for implementation on the latest version of Mintek’s open control platform, PlantStar, highlighting advances and additions since the previous implementations of the Interpreting Expert System and concluding with an example illustrating some of the principles.

"The New Orleans area has been repeatedly flooded by major storms and hurricanes since its French colonial era. After severe flooding in May 1995, the U.S. Congress authorized a massive flood protection project called the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Program (SELA) in 1996 to improve interior drainage in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Tammany parishes. However, the project was not fully funded before the landing of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Rita, which breached many of the area’s levees and flooded 80 percent of the city. Finally, the project was fully funded in 2008 and has been worked on towards its 2017 completion. Another large project simultaneously worked on in the area is the Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS). This system was designed for a 100-year level of flood risk reduction. One particular project within the HSDRRS rendered successful due to an unconventional method of pile driving that was utilized to install sheet piles to reinforce an existing concrete I-wall. This paper will discuss how and why this non-vibratory method of sheet pile installation allowed the project to be successfully completed ahead of schedule.INTRODUCTIONSteel sheet piles were utilized on many of the SELA and HSDRRS projects for permanent cutoff walls under concrete I-walls or T-walls or for temporary earth retaining walls of drainage structures. Although the SELA Project was established in 1996 after severe flooding the year before, hardly any work was done on it until the two catastrophic storms Hurricanes known as Katrina and Rita triggered its revival. These two hurricanes also triggered the HSDRRS soon after the storms’ devastation. The SELA project authorized to improve interior drainage systems while the HSDRRS project was authorized to raise or restore levees and floodwalls mainly along Lake Pontchartrain, the Mississippi River, and Lake Borgne in addition to other areas. Figure 1 shows the SELA Projects that have been completed, are still under construction, or approved for construction. The projects fully highlighted in yellow within the map specified the press-in piling method. These improvements included drainage systems, pump stations, surge walls, and outfall canals as enhanced protection for future storms similar to Hurricane Katrina that caused so much damage by inundating the New Orleans area in August and September 2005 respectively (Facts and Figures, 2012). The completion of these projects were the responsibility of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District.Due to the fact that many of the projects were in densely populated areas, the Army Corps of Engineers specified a non-impact, non-vibratory press-in piling method for driving and extracting sheet piles for many of the projects to mitigate noise and vibration impacts. The soft soil conditions in the New Orleans area was also a contributing factor in the Army Corps of Engineers’ decision to specify this piling method due to the risk of settlement for existing historical as well as modern structures. In addition, there were other projects that elected to use the press-in method without any contractual requirements. One of these projects was the Inner Harbor Navigational Canal Reach II Emergency Interim Repair which was part of the HSDRRS project that has been under construction since its authorization in 2005 (Facts and Figures, 2012)."

In previous conferences the authors have reported on toxic fumes generated by the detonation of ANFO. The research reported here extends the earlier work to include an emulsion blasting agent and ANFO/emulsion blends. Explosive mixtures were shot in 4-inch Schedule 80 steel pipe in a chamber in the experimental mine at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Following each shot, the fumes in the chamber were analyzed using on-line instrumentation. A major goal of the research was to gain a better understanding of the factors that lead to the generation of toxic fumes in blasting operations. Earlier studies have suggested that the high nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide concentrations in product clouds might be the result of the poor confinement provided by relatively weak ground strata or the exposure of the explosive to ground water prior to shooting the shot. Various mixtures of ANFO and emulsion were detonated in schedule 80 steel pipe and galvanized sheet metal pipe to evaluate the effect of confinement. Explosive mixtures were also allowed to soak in water for less than one day, one week, one month, and two months to determine which explosive mixtures would be degraded and observe what effect this degradation had on fume production. Results indicated that the production of nitrogen dioxide increased with low confinement of the detonating explosive and with exposure of the explosive to water.

On December 2013 a MEMU exploded at a blasting site in Norway, after burning for more than two hours. This paper describes the analyses made to determine the actual yield of the explosion, the lessons learned from the event and the actions taken as a consequence. The conclusions of the analysis were the following: - The yield of the explosion was 650-1450 kg TNT. In terms of AN and ANE they correspond to 1300 – 3700 kg AN, or 950 – 2450 kg ANE or ANE/AN blend. These quantities are 8 to 31 % of the explosive precursors in the truck. The burning of the truck and its load for two and a half hours had consumed more than two thirds (perhaps up to 90 %) of the explosive precursor material.

The Bureau of Mines conducted field-scale experiments in underground gasification of coal with oxygen-enriched air. A path about 140 feet long was linked at the rate of LO feet per day through a coalbed hydraulically fractured with a mixture of starch gel and sand. During the best gasification period, which extended for 2-1/2 days, 785,000 std. c.f. per day of 124-B.t.u. gas was produced. In other periods the heating value at times was almost 300 B.t.u. per std, c.f,, but sustained production of such gas was not achieved. During gasification, a total of 50 tons of coal was gasified and 114 tons of coal was carbonized. Approximately 12 million B, t .u. per foot of nominal path was recovered at the surface.
