Martin County Coal Corp. is located in Martin County, KY, in the Appalachian coal fields, near the West Virginia border. The company's total leasehold covers more then 133.5 km' (33,000 acres). Total annual production at Martin County Coal Corp. is currently 2.2 Mt (2.5 million st). In certain years, though, it exceeded 2.7 Mt (3 million st). About 45% of the annual production comes from two surface mines. The balance is produced from five underground mines. Martin County Coal's work schedule consists of two nine-hour shifts a day, 240 days a year. Topography The topography of the area is characterized by rugged hills and ridges and sharp V-shaped valleys demonstrating a cliff and slope topography. This topography consists of alternating benches of outcrop sandstone and slopes. The deep valleys have been carved out by many small streams in the area. These streams are contained within the steep slopes of narrow, twisted mountain ridges. The ridges are underlain by massive sandstones that, being resistant to erosion, create sharp, rocky morphology. The height of the hills above the valley floors ranges from 122 to 244 m (400 to 800 ft).

Molycorp's gravity type panel-caving operation employs a system of short raises to transfer ore from the Grizzly Level to the Haulage Level. The raises have normally been developed using a conventional drill-and-blast method or a combination conventional/raiseboring method. A new method was needed that would be less labor intensive, provide a safer work environment for personnel, provide a stable raise that could be self-supporting and a method that would be cost competitive with the conventional system.

Iodine, a grayish-black nonmetallic element, with a density of 4.9 g/cm3, is a solid at ordinary temperatures. It is a member of the halogen family, along with fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and astatine. Iodine melts at 114°C. and at 184°C it is volatilized to a blue-violet gas that has an irritating odor. It does not occur as an element in nature, but occurs as iodates, iodides, or other combined forms. It is the 47th most abundant element in the earth's crust. Iodine was discovered by Bernard Courtois in 1811. He observed an unknown substance in the crude soda ash that results from the burning of seaweed. Samples of this unknown substance were identified to be a new element, and in 1813 Gay-Lussac named the substance iode, from the Greek word for violet color. The world production during 1989 and 1990 [(Table 1)] is estimated to be about 16 million kg per year (Lyday, 1991), of which about 30% is consumed in the United States. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY Compounds of iodine are minor constituents in seawater and brines, in certain marine organisms, and in minerals of the Chilean nitrate deposits. Seawater contains approximately 0.05 ppm iodine, and certain marine organisms, such as seaweed, sponges, fish, and some brown algae, are able to further concentrate iodine (Lyday, 1989a). Some seaweed can extract and accumulate iodine up to 0.45% of their weight, on a dry basis. The northern Chilean nitrate deposits, in the Atacama Desert, contain the following iodine minerals: lautarite, Ca(I03), (calcium iodate); dietzeite, CaJIO,), (CrO,) (calcium iodate-chromate); and bruggenite, Ca(I03), . H20 (Erickson, 1981). Various subsurface brines also contain iodine compounds. Some gas-field brines in the United States and Japan locally contain 30 to 1 300 ppm iodine. Several coals in Germany also contain iodine compounds. Iodine has been recovered from brines mainly in Japan and the United States, but also in Java, Indonesia, Italy, England, and the former USSR. Iodine has also been recovered from seaweed in Ireland, Scotland, France, Japan, Norway, and the USSR. Seaweed was a major source of iodine for the world in the first half of this century, and it remains as a large resource. The reserves and future resources of iodine are large, even excluding the resources in seaweed and seawater, and are shown in [Table 1]. Analysis Iodine as the free element can be detected by the characteristic blue color it gives to a starch solution. Quantitatively it is determined as the free element by titration with standard thiosulfate solutions using starch as an indicator. Colorimetric methods are also applicable. PRINCIPAL PRODUCING COUNTRIES Major iodine-producing nations are Japan, Chile, the USSR, and the United States, with lesser amounts being produced in China and Indonesia ([Fig. 1; Table 1]). Annual world production in 1989 and 1990, respectively, is estimated at 15.6 and 16 million kg. In Japan and Chile, the production of iodine depends on production of other materials, such as natural gas or nitrates, respectively, whereas in US operations (in Oklahoma) iodine is the major product recovered from natural brines. Chile was for a long time the principal world producer of iodine from its nitrate-fertilizer operations, but in recent years Japan has become the world leader with increased production of natural gas and associated iodine-rich brines.

Introduction Heavy media separation (HMS), also called dense media or float¬sink separation, is one of the newer forms of gravity concentration. Though the concept can be traced to the last century, the process has enjoyed its major growth since 1940. Heavy liquid separation is a mutation. The heavy media process is used extensively to clean coal and for the concentration of a wide variety of ores such as those of iron, lead-zinc, chrome, manganese, tin, tungsten, fluorspar, magnesite, sylvite, garnet, diamonds, gravel, etc. It may be used where ever a significant density difference occurs between two minerals, and commercial separations are typically made in the range of 1.3 to 3.8 sp gr. The particle size treated ranges downward from 6-8 in. top size. Particles greater than about 1/16-in. (10 mesh) may be treated in a "static" bath, though for reasons of separation efficiency, + 1/2 -in- feed is usually preferred. For particles less than this size, separation in a heavy media cyclone is generally used. The flowsheet of a typical heavy media process, in this case one using a ferrous medium, is shown in Fig. I. In essence, the process consists of: (1) preparation of the feed usually by wet screening to remove undesired fines, (2) heavy medium separation, and (3) removal and recovery of the medium from the separated products. Many muta¬tions of the basic scheme are possible and numerous options are possi¬ble. HMS offers the following potential advantages:12 1) Ability to make sharp separations. 2) Ability to change the specific gravity of separation quickly to meet changing conditions. 3) Ability to remove products continuously. 4) Ability to treat a broad size range of products. 5) Ease of start-up and shutdown without loss of separating efficiency. 6) Relatively low medium cost and low media losses. 7) Low operating and maintenance costs. 8) High capacity with the use of relatively little floor space. 9) Relatively low capital investment per ton of capacity. The process may be used to produce a finished concentrate, two finished concentrates, or a concentrate and a middling of differing quality, or a preconcentrate by rejection of unwanted gangue. It is an ideal method for the reprocessing of coarse waste dumps. The greatest use for the process lies in coal cleaning and in the preconcentration of ores. The relatively inexpensive heavy media process may be used advantageously to reject large quantities of coarsely crushed gangue. When used in this way, the process will allow: (1) the use of lower cost but less selective mining methods with the "overbreak" material being removed at the front end of the concentrator or preparation plant; (2) a substantial reduction in the quantity of ore that must be finely ground for subsequent mineral liberation and separa¬tion. Since comminution is often the single most expensive step in beneficiation, it is desirable to eliminate as many essentially barren pieces of rock as possible before the grinding step, (3) a decrease in overall plant capital cost per ton of concentrate since the size of the plant from the dense medium step onward will be smaller. Several general references are available,12-18 though much of the technical data on the process is widely scattered in the general litera¬ture. Heavy Liquid Separation Organic Liquids Given sufficient settling time, it is possible to make a perfect separa¬tion between two particles of differing density by placing them in a liquid whose density is intermediate between the two. This means of achieving a perfect separation has proven to be elusive because of problems in feed preparation, particle settling rates, operational considerations, and economic constraints. There are a wide variety of heavy liquids that could be used, most of them halogenated hydrocarbons, and a few typical examples are given in Table 4. These liquids are most commonly used in ore dressing for the laboratory fractionation of ore particles on the basis of specific gravity. Laboratory Separations. Using liquids typified by those given in Table 4, separations are made to develop either the standard washability curves used to estimate the response of a given sample to gravity concentration or to prepare a partition curve to evaluate the effective¬ness of a given gravity separation process or piece of equipment. A typical washability curve is given in Fig. 2.19 Such curves are generated for raw coal, e.g., by treating either the whole or various size fractions of the sample in a series of heavy liquids and analyzing the various specific gravity fractions so produced. The procedure is relatively simple for coal samples because of the ready availability of a wide variety of relatively low cost heavy liquids in the density range 1.2¬-2.0. For ores the problem is much more complicated, because only a few high density liquids, all of rather high cost, are available. Parti¬tion curves are generated in the same manner by treating the separated products in the same liquids. Greater details on the procedures to be used in heavy liquid separa¬tions are to be found in the literature (for coal, Refs. 13, 14 and 19 and for ore, Refs. 20 and 21). For testing coal, calcium and zinc chloride solutions have been used extensively in the past, though today halogenated hydrocarbons (available under the trade name Certigrav) are the preferred media. The mining industry is one of the three pillars of the Namibian economic development, besides tourism and the fishing industry. Generating 20 % of the GDP and more than 50 % of the export income, half of this amount derives from the diamond mining industry. In 2008, the annual production of 2.2 mio carat achieved an income higher than 1.44 billion Namibian Dollars (more than 750 mio Euro). After the global recession in early 2009, which also caused a significant downcrease in production to only 0.93 mio Carat, the diamond mining industry easily restored itself and the production figures for 2010 are expected to be even higher than those achieved in 2008. Compared to other diamond producing countries, Namibia is mainly producing diamonds of highest quality (jewellery quality), with less than 10 % of the mined diamonds not falling into this category. This high quality stands also for the worldwide highest prize achieved per carat. With 370 $US per carat it is more than four times higher than that of the average South African stone. In 1908 the finding of the first diamonds in the Namib desert close to the coastal town of Lüderitz was reported by a Mr Stauch, railway inspector for the then German colonial railway company. This event immediately triggered a Diamond Rush and subsequently the set-up of the restricted diamond mining area ?Sperrgebiet? through the German colonial administration. In 1913, only five years after the first mining operations had started, the steadily increasing production allowed for more than 20 % of the diamond production worldwide. After the First World War, the new South African government concentrated all mining activities in one organization, CDM (Consolidated Diamond Mines of South West Africa) which in following decades conducted an extensive and detailed exploration of the whole Sperrgebiet and started numerous new diamond mining operations.

The rheological properties of five kaolins, isostatically pressurized at 4 x10 Pa for 10 min in the presence/absence of water, was determined. Under dry conditions, measured viscosity values either decreased or remained the same. After treatment under wet conditions, measured viscosity values were 30-60% higher at high shear and 50-60% higher at low shear. These results correlate with variations in nanomorphology and structural order. Dry compaction degraded kaolinite crystals but wet-pressing appeared to cause an increase in the proportion of euhedral crystallites and a decrease in deformed crystals. Dry compaction decreased the low-defect phase proportion (ldp), but in contrast, the ldp in wet-treated kaolins remained constant or increased. Results show that hydrous pressure treatment produces a change in viscosity of kaolin suspensions, yielding the potential for improving paper coating performance, whereas anhydrous pressure treatment decreased or maintained the viscosity.

Macroscopic characteristics of a complicated mine ventilation is remarked to build an expert system for mine safety in the Taiheiyo coal mine, Hokkaido, Japan. To gain the characteristics a large number of simulation were performed with varying aerodynamic resistance of the branches with regulator in mine ventilation network. The principal results of the study are as follows, (1) Pressure loss diagram for ventilation network with main and auxiliary fans enables capability of air circulation in the network. (2) H-Q (pressure-quantity) diagram gives capacity of air quantity In a network with main and auxiliary fans. (3) When airflow rate, [] through branch qi is changed by opening/closing regulator set in the branch, air flow rate, [], through branch p can be represented by the empirical formula. [ ] where Api and Qp,o are the constant coefficients. (4) Macroscopic characteristics mentioned above are available to make rules in an expert system for escaping route at emergency.

The NMBGMR is slowly converting historical data into a relational database using Microsoft Access 97. The purpose of this database is to provide data on districts, mines, and mills in New Mexico to government agencies, public organizations, industry, and citizens to make informed decisions about resource development, resource management, water supplies, environmental impacts, hazard assessment, and waste disposal. Once the data are entered into the database with locations, the data can easily be converted to GIS format for displaying as different map layers.

On November 15, 1990, President Bush signed the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The new legislation is sweeping in its demands for cuts in smog, acid deposition, toxic air pollutants and ozone-depleting chemicals. The Amendments will siqnificantly alter air quality permitting and compliance and are estimted to cost billions of dollars to implement. This article provides an overview and summary of each of the eleven titles of the Amendments. It also addresses how the Amendments will be implemented.

A complex pyrite orebody located in the South of Portugal (MO INHO) was exploited in the past by cut and fill methods until a certain level. It was decided to design a new plant for non ferrous metal extraction and the rate of production and exploitation method was modified accordingly. So, a sub level stoping (SLS) method was en visaged for the exploitation of the deepest part of the orebody (under 265 m level). For the planning of this SLS method, it was decided to perform a geostatistical study of the orebody, on the basis of the available information, which consists mainly of channel samples assayed for Cu, S, Zn and Pb.

This paper summarizes the practical considerations of the various electrical separation methods used in mineral processing. The effective factors related to mineral characteristics and equipment attributes are described and analyzed with reference to conventional industrial applications of the electrical methods. Some new aspects of electrical methods application and their potential for mineral beneficiation, apart from the mineral systems that have been successfully beneficiated, are also presented. In addition, wet dielectric separation, which now appears to be promising, is briefly cited.

This study investigated the performance of citric acid as lixiviant for cathode material from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Black mass containing 84.2 weight percent MNC (LiNi0.45Mn0.4Co0.15O2) and 15.8 weight percent LCO (LiCoO2) material was leached at solid-to-liquid ratios of 20, 50 and 100 g/L. Leaching with 1.5 M citric acid, 2 volume percent H2O2 and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 20 g/L at 95 °C extracted 90 percent Co, 95 percent Li, 94 percent Mn and 94 percent Ni within 20 min. At the highest solid-to-liquid ratio of 100 g/L with 1.5 M citric acid, 10 volume percent H2O2 and 95 °C, 84 percent Al, 84 percent Co, 87 percent Li, 86 percent Mn and 96 percent Ni were leached after 40 min, producing a leach solution containing 0.68 g/L Al, 20.0 g/L Co, 6.0 g/L Li, 13.6 g/L Mn and 19.3 g/L Ni. Using stepwise addition of H2O2, instead of initial bulk addition, did not significantly improve the leaching efficiency but did reduce the required leaching time. Temperature control of the reactor was also more manageable with stepwise addition of H2O2, and evolution of gas was less vigorous. It was observed that the leaching efficiencies of Co, Li and Mn decreased slightly at solid-to-liquid ratios of 50 and 100 g/L, while the leaching of Ni increased slightly. The solution leached at 20 g/L could be stored for six weeks without any spontaneous precipitation. However, solutions leached at 50 and 100 g/L showed changes in concentration after one month of storage, suggesting that processes that have a large material throughput and use high solid-to-liquid ratios around 100 g/L must ensure that the solutions are not stored for extended periods of time.

From October 1980 through August 1982, surveys were conducted on 19 longwall mining operations to obtain data relative to respirable dust levels associated with particular longwall operations and occupations, to make recommendations for enhancing dust control, and, where applicable, to evaluate the effectiveness of new technology implemented to control dust. The paper summarizes the data collected during these surveys and, where possible, draws conclusions and discusses actions that can be utilized to reduce exposures to respirable coal mine dust on longwall mining operations.

How best to grind? This article compares conventional crushing and grinding circuits to semiautogenous circuits, reviews recent installations of each circuit, and describes seven methods of using autogenous or semiautogenous techniques. In addition, steel and power consumption data are reported and benefits of a dedicated digital computer are discussed. Size reduction is the most expensive operation in most mills. Crushing and grinding are usually the greatest part of capital costs. They often make up 60-70% of total mill operating costs. Picking the proper crushing and grinding method must, therefore, be done with great care, so the best circuit is chosen. In the past 10 years, there has been a strong trend toward using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding in mills throughout the world. Autogenous grinding is favored when the ore is quite competent and a fine grind is needed. Semiautogenous grinding is applied when fine crushing could cause severe problems or when ore varies in hardness or competency. The taconite iron ores of northern Minnesota fit the description for an autogenously ground ore and many are successfully ground that way. Most im¬pressive are the nine lines of 11 x 4.9 m (36 x 16 ft) mills powered by 9 MW (12,000 hp) motors at Hibbing Taconite. Porphyry copper and molybdenum ores fit the description for semiautogenous grinding. Recent installations include Highmont in British Columbia, Canada, and Quintana in New Mexico. Sampling Many mills have been built based on inadequate sampling data or insufficient tests. With the cost of many mills exceeding several hundred million dollars, it is mandatory that geologists, mining engineers, and metallurgists work together to prepare representative testing samples. Simple, repeatable work index tests are usually sufficient for rod and ball mill tests. However, pilot plant tests on 50-100 t (55-110 tons) of ore are frequently necessary for autogenous or semiautogenous mills. Preparation and selection of the test sample is of utmost importance. Procedures for autogenous and semiautogenous mill pilot plant tests are relatively simple for those experienced in running them. Reliable and repeatable results can be obtained if simple, fundamental procedures are followed. The accompanying figure shows a typical conventional crushing-grinding circuit with three stages of crushing followed by ball mills or a rod mill-ball mill combination. This flowsheet is typical of many mills that have been built throughout the world. Also shown is a typical semiautogenous (SAG) circuit with feed coming directly from a primary crusher, and the semiautogenous mill product going to the separation process. Many similar semiautogenous circuits are built today because they are simple and flexible, lend themselves readily to high tonnages, and usually cost less to build and operate. With some ores, it is possible to send mine-run ore directly to the semiautogenous mill, eliminating the need for a primary crusher, as at Benquet's Dizon mill in the Philippines. An autogenous or semiautogenous circuit, as the name implies, uses the ore itself to assist in the grinding process. Generally, for this type of circuit, the ore must be competent so large ore chunks can be used to grind smaller ones. If ore alone is used, then the circuit is autogenous; but if balls are added to supplement the charge, then the circuit is termed semiautogenous. Ore competency is not always a criterion, to break up large pieces and wash away cementing material. Autogenous and semiautogenous mills have been very successful on relatively soft uranium ores where the values are frequently found in the material that cements together the sandstone grains. Autogenous Circuits When an ore is hard and competent, it is always possible it might make good "pebbles" that could be used for fine grinding media. "The Regional Connector Transit Corridor is a 1.9 mile long light rail transit project in downtown Los Angeles, California. The project includes approximately 4,930 feet of twin bored tunnels together with a mined crossover cavern, 3 deep stations, and other cut-and-cover structures. The bored tunnels will be excavated using an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine through Fernando Formation (extremely weak to weak rock) and alluvium. The tunneling will be performed in close proximity to a large number of existing structures, including the existing Metro Red Line tunnels with as little as 6 feet of separation. Thus, the evaluations of the tunneling effect on these structures and the instrumentation and monitoring program is an essential part of the project design. This paper provides a very brief overview of the considerations and evaluations of the tunneling effects on the existing structures and results of evaluation obtained during the final design stage of the project. INTRODUCTION The proposed Regional Connector Transit Corridor (RCTC) project provides a 1.9 mile-long connection between the Metro Gold Line from Pasadena and East Los Angeles; and the Metro Blue Line to Long Beach and the Expo Line to Culver City. The alignment is shown in Figure 1. The Regional Connector will provide new tracks through downtown Los Angeles. The project will extend underground from the Metro Blue, Expo, Red, and Purple Lines’ 7th Street/Metro Center Station following Flower Street, curving northeast to the north of 3rd Street under the 2nd Street Tunnel. The alignment will then continue eastward under 2nd Street, turning northeast to cross under the intersection of 1st and Alameda Streets, then splitting into two branches above the ground surface, one branch extending north along Alameda Street and the other extending east along 1st Street. The project elements include 3 deep stations, a SEM cavern, segments of TBM bored tunnels, and cut-and-cover guideway structures. The bored tunnels have an excavated diameter of 20.3 feet. The subsurface conditions along the tunnel alignment generally consist of artificial fill overlaying finer-grained alluvium (dominantly medium dense to dense sandy soils), underlain by coarser-grained alluvium (a wide variety of medium dense to dense sandy and gravely soils). Below the coarser-grained alluvium is Fernando Formation, which is characterized as extremely weak to very weak sedimentary bedrock. A long stretch of the alignment will be excavated in this formation. The soil layers above the Fernando Formation are of variable thickness and spatial distribution. The geologic profile is shown in Figure 2."

A new pillar strength formula is presented. It incorporates a function [IF] of size and shape that takes into account the size-shape interaction effect as well as the enhanced strength exhibited by wide pillars. Existing pillar formulas, lacking these capabilities, are not suitable for extrapolating small-specimen test results to mine-pillar sizes and shapes. Interpreting compressive strength test results as function of [Y] reveals wide-pillar behavior in much old test data. Model relationships are discussed, along with their scaling implications.

International Technology for the Nonferrous Smelting Industry, by T. K. INTRODUCTION During the last decade, several studies in France (e.g., Perraud et al. , 1970; Chameaud et al., 1974, 1979 and 1980) and the United States (e.g., Stuart et al., 1978; Cross et al., 1978, 1980 and 1981) have demonstrated the systematic production of emphysema, fibrosis and tumors in the lungs of animals exposed to radon daughters alone or to mixtures of uranium-mine air contaminants. The studies in beagle dogs have been particularly interesting because of the uncertain etiology of the disease and the (apparently) diverse results of the studies at the University of Rochester and the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL). In the Rochester studies, reported by Morken (1973), beagle dogs were exposed to "normal" room air dust loads and radon daughters from 200 to 10,000 WLM*, delivered in 1 to 50 days (rate of delivery, about 200 WLM per day of exposure). Histological examination of tissues was conducted at 1, 2 and 3 years after exposure for all exposure levels. No cancers were noted in these dogs that received estimated alveolar doses of 34 to 1700 rad (0.34 to 17 Gy). Pathologic changes were found only in the alveolar and bronchiolar regions of the lung. These changes were small, subtle, variable, and widely separated, involving only a very small fraction of lung tissue. Lesions appeared as focal thickening of alveolar septa, with some metaplasia of alveolar cells and some hyperplasia of bronchial epithelium. In the PNL experiments reported by Cross et al. (1978), beagle dogs were exposed in lifespan studies to mixtures of radon daughters (rate of delivery, about 14 WLM per day of exposure), uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. One group of dogs was exposed to cigarette smoke alone. Except in control and smoke-only groups, the dogs died within 4' years of the first radon daughter exposure, or were killed when death appeared imminent because of pulmonary insufficiency (characterized by rapid, shallow breathing). Control and smoke-only animals were killed at periods corresponding to highmortality periods in the groups exposed to radon daughters and mixtures of uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. Emphysema and fibrosis were much more prevalent and severe in the lungs of dogs exposed to the mixtures. These dogs also had adenomatous lesions, which progressed to squamous metaplasia of alveolar epithelium, epidermoid carcinoma and bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. Pathologic changes in the upper airways of these dogs were most prominent in the nasal mucosa, and included a few squamous carcinomas in the nasal cavity. Respiratory tract neoplasia was noted after ~4 years exposure and at cumulative exposures exceeding approximately 12,000 WLM. Apart from differences in associated carrier aerosol (room air dust vs. uranium ore dust) and radon-daughter exposure rate (200 WLM/day, shortduration exposure vs. 14 WLM/day, long-duration exposure), the most obvious difference in the Rochester and PNL studies was the observation time following exposure (3 years maximum vs. >4 years). Although neoplasia may not have been observed in the Rochester animals because of the earlier termination of the experiments, it is surprising that other lesions, such as prominent fibrosis and emphysema, were not reported. A follow-up study (reported here) is currently in progress at PNL to determine the pathogenic role of uranium ore dust alone and, in particular, to clarify the role of the ore dust in the production of the massive pulmonary fibrosis observed in the earlier study. Pulmonary function testing (a recently acquired capability) was included in the follow-up study as an indicator of progressive change in lung tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS Chronic (4 hr/day, 5 days/week) exposures began when the dogs were about 2 1/2 years old. Two identical exposure chambers provided space for simultaneous, head-only exposure of 24 dogs to ~l5 mg/m3 carnotite uranium ore dust. An aerosol diffusion system was incorporated in each chamber in order to channel fresh aerosol past each dog's head; uranium ore dust was added to the inlet room air with Wright Dust Feed Mechanisms* (WDFM). Uranium ore dust and condensation nuclei concentrations were measured daily; chamber aerosols were monitored occasionally for particle-size distributions as described for previous hamster experiments (Cross et al., 1981). Elemental analysis of slurry streams using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) has long been employed. However, detector technology has limited the application of XRF devices. Using detector technology employed on NASA's Mars Pathfinder to analyze soil samples, Process Control, Inc. has developed an on-line analyzer to mount on a sampling system. The prototype XRF elemental analyzer was installed at Detroit Edison's Monroe Power Plant in January, 1998 and has been employed to monitor feedstock quality. A slurry system has been developed for flotation control. This paper describes the testing of the analyzer using the new, draft ISO standard for evaluating the performance of on-line analyzers (ISO/DIS 15239).

Introduction Coal has been mined in the western United States since the mid-1800s. The resource is abundant in the West. Despite recent economic conditions, it remains an important part of the nation's energy warehouse. Many of the seams that comprise the western resource base are thick, some exceeding 61 m (200 ft). Multiple, closely-spaced seams or thick coals that split into two or more minable seams are also common. Historically, subsurface development recovered from less than 15% to 50% of these deposits (Matson and White, 1975). This resulted in a substantial loss of inplace reserve due to the limited height that could be mined using the available technology. In an effort to increase future recovery from such deposits, the US Bureau of Mines analyzed the potential for incorporating three thick-seam mining methods into western coal mines. These methods are high-face longwall, multislice longwall, and longwall caving. They were developed in Europe and are being used to mine thick coal seams in Europe and Asia. One aspect that will determine their success in the US is the geology of the individual deposit; namely, are the methods adaptable to the geologic conditions characteristic of western coal? This paper analyzes some of the geologic factors that would affect development of thick or closely-spaced seams using these mining methods. Occurrence of thick and closely-spaced seams Since mining conditions and methods differ around the world, a thick seam is often defined as a seam whose total thickness cannot be extracted using the available equipment. In the western US, the maximum extractable mining height is about 4.3 m (14 ft). For this research, a thick seam was defined as a minable seam 4.6 m (15 ft) thick or more. Since one of the seams is usually lost using standard mining methods, closely-spaced or split seams were also addressed. These were defined as two minable seams 1.5 m (5 ft) thick or more separated by 9 m (30 ft) of interburden. Thick or closely-spaced coal seams are common in the West. Their importance has not been documented due, in part, to the methods used to measure resources. In the past, all reserves greater than 1.1 m (42 in.) thick for bituminous seams and greater than 3 m (10 ft) thick for subbituminous seams were grouped together and were differentiated only by rank. Further differentiation by seam thickness or minability was not done. For this reason, reserve figures for thick or split seams are difficult to determine. By analyzing available published resource data, Ferm and Muthig (1982) addressed thick seam resources. They estimated a resource of 90 Gt (99 billion st) of coal (16% of the Western resource base) in seams 4.6 (15 ft) or greater at less than 610 m (2000 ft) overburden. Yet, a later study of Pierce and others (1982) on one thick seam deposit in the Powder River Basin estimated a resource of 103 Gt (113 billion st). Pierce (1986) reported that the overburden reached a maximum of 731 m (2400 ft). The resources in this single deposit exceeded the 90 Gt (99 billion st) total projected for the entire western US by 12.7 Gt (14 billion st). Due to such differences, this author chose to look at reported occurrences of thick or closely-spaced minable seams in place of resource figures, to verify the need to research thick seam mining in the West. An occurrence was defined as an isolated site where a thick seam or two or more closely-spaced seams were reported. The occurrences were derived from published material - mostly mine descriptions, measured sections, coal exploration logs, and oil and gas logs. Due to time constraints, the reserves associated with each occurrence were not determined. All data points were random. The analysis was limited to occurrences in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah.
