For 30 years, mining operations worldwide have used diesel-powered mobile machinery to mechanize the mining process. South African diamond mines and some US coal mines have 15 years of experience with this type of equipment. During the past eight years, most of the new gold production from underground mines outside of South Africa has been mined by bulk methods using diesel-powered machinery. The underground mining industry, then, has secured and institutionalized the larger benefits created by a technology that was new to mining engineers in the early 1960s. The state of mechanized diesel-powered underground mining is now mature. To survive, though, mine operators -regardless of commodity mined and position in the commodity cycle-must maximize the benefits of diesel technology. The benefits gained in the next seven to 10 years will be realized by tweaking this component, fine tuning that piece of machinery and demanding optimum use of the technology. Manufacturers of diesel-powered machinery share the condition of maturity with their customers. Larger scale and easy market development have occurred. Much has been made of the potential size of the US coal segment as well as markets in China and the Confederation of Independent States (CIS). Indeed, opportunities do exist in these regions. However, these market development opportunities do not imply the market size trend line remains unchanged. They simply mean the potential market size is within reach. In fact, the market size for the product is shrinking.

The Bureau of Mines has developed and tested a new concept of combining thermal and hydraulic energy processes for hard rock cutting. The study shows that this novel combination method overcomes the fragmentation limitations of the thermal process in nonspalling rocks and the cuttability limitations of the hydraulic process in high-strength rocks. The method effectively cuts hard rocks at moderate hydraulic pressures (below 30,000 psi). Theoretical predictions of the rock damage process are made and are correlated with experimental results obtained by using both single pulse and continuous water jet hydraulic systems. Traversing point heating and line heating techniques were used for heating rocks preceding the continuous jet impingement. Heating induces structural weakness of the rock material and assists fragmentation by the water jet impingement. The thermohydraulic process is effective if the significant depth of heat penetration induced by the surface heating exceeds the cutting depth produced by the jet impingement. Hydraulic specific fragmentation energy values reduce by about an order of magnitude using the combination technique. The process efficiency and the rate of themohydraulic hard rock cutting increases significantly by increasing the intensity and duration of heating.

The use of a laboratory-scale magnetic fluid-based separator for coal separations was examined. A Frantz laboratory magnetic separator was modified by fabricating new pole pieces of the appropriate geometry to provide the proper magnetic field gradients. Two separation chambers, which were constructed out of Plexiglas, were designed to fit between the pole pieces. A commercially available, water-based, ferro-magnetic fluid was used as the separating medium. The separating density was changed by varying the intensity of the electromagnet. Both batch and continuous separations were made using 0.59x0.50 and 0.18x0.15 mm coal. The results are compared to those obtained using organic liquids.

New methods and techniques in the field of hydrogeology are being developed constantly. One of these advances has been brought about through the use of inexpensive microcomputers. The formulas used in this paper and developed by Theis, Jacob, Glover, Keck, and Dupuit are not new. The methods by which these formulas can be solved are now available to all who wish to get faster, less expensive, and more reliable answers. In conventional electrolytic copper production, looped copper starter sheets, on which the copper is deposited, are supported by hard-drawn copper bars. These bars have cross-sectional areas of between 1 and 1.4 in2. The suspension bars serve two purposes: firstly to support the cathode, which can weigh up to 150 kg, and secondly to introduce the electric current. IYI examined these two requirements in detail to see whether a better design could be achieved. Considering firstly the current carrying requirement, it wee noted that under normal refinery conditions, each cathode carries between 400 and soak. If one applies the generally accepted rule that 1 in of copper can carry 1000A4 a suspension bar need theoretically contain only 1/2 in2 of copper. This contention is supported by the fact that the 500A current passed through the cathode also appears to pass quite satisfactorily through the two support loops, which have a cross-sectional area of approximately 0.35 in 2. Turning now to the strength requirements, the cross-section of hard-drawn copper bar required to support a 150 kg cathode is relatively small, and easily met by the present designs. It is not, however, the static load applied by the 150 kg cathode immersed in the electrolyte which causes the damage to the hard-drawn copper, or even the increased static load of a 100 kg man standing on one foot in the centre of the bar; the damage is actually caused by the dynamic loads applied to the bare when they are dropped, thrown into containers, lowered too rapidly into the cell, or otherwise mistreated. The important requirement is therefore that the bar does not permanently bend. Its proof stress of limit of proportionality, rather than the amount that it deflects under static loading, should be the strength criterion. With the hard-drawn copper normally used for the manufacture of suspension bars, it has been observed that the copper becomes annealed during use, particularly at the end of the bar where the current is introduced. Thus, after a relatively short time, the cathodes are in effect being supported by annealed copper bars.

Many mining wastes, especially those from the metal mining industry, have traditionally been treated as a matter of little or no value and in practice a cost burden. Some wastes, due to their reactivity characteristics, have emergent values that go beyond purely economic and into the environmentally beneficial realm. This paper discusses the changing paradigm of mine waste management. Such fundamental parameters such as cut off grade, and strip ratio, are positively impacted by the revaluation of waste rock material. Mine rock waste can now be seen as a commodity of value, similar to the underlying ore being mined and influences the economic performance of suitable projects. This valuable material can be used for industrial purposes including acid neutralization as well as the capture and long-term disposal of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. The Turnagain Nickel project, located in northern British Columbia serves as an example of how waste rock material can become an important matrix for carbon capture and sequestration and can benefit economically from it. By producing material that has emergent economic value as well as carbon capture and sequestration capabilities, the sequestration matrix producer is a beneficiary of new carbon credits that have a market value and is looked upon favourably by regulatory authorities and affected stakeholders.

Restrictions on fugitive emissions and crushing operations continue to get tighter. Although fugitive dust control in the gold mining industry has historically been difficult, there are now several options that can make dust control both effective and efficient. Using new technology, mine operators can now design and maintain a dust control program that can reduce product losses, decrease equipment failure, cut cleaning costs, and meet air quality compliance standards as well as provide a better working environment. This paper discusses the sources of fugitive emissions related to the gold mining and crushing operations and describes effective new control methods.

"Health and Safety problems can make a mineral deposit or a portion of one, an operating plant, or finished product unprofitable or worthless. Therefore they need to be reviewed when reserves are established and yearly thereafter until the deposit is closed down. Health and Safety regulations serve as a guide, but I have always done more frequent checks, when adding new products with different specifications or during times of bad weather and crisis. Water quality and quantity are always in question. Health and Safety are quality of life issues which are at or near the top of priorities for communities, companies, employees, and government bodies. Georgia dropped from one to three in U. S. for business development due to “Quality of Life” issues. Remember crystalline silica is present in nearly all sedimentary and acidic rocks and basic igneous rocks are the perceived home of asbestos. These health issues, any other safety and health issues or perceived issues need to be resolved initially and any time they come up during life of deposit. When handled properly good safety and health programs add to the profitability of a deposit, not to the costs. Daily safety checks in operating plants and mines, and visual check of all drilling core with an eye for changes are a key to successful programs. Both plants I turned around had terrible safety records, too much airborne dust, and maintenance problems resulting in low productivity. In almost every case cost reduction was tied to eliminating maintenance and spillage problems which caused health problems and increased possibility of accidents. Implementation of these safety and health programs around 1970 starting prior to government programs, working with new MSA/MSHA regulations, working to improve the regulations as a president of a state mining organization, and maintain profits was a challenge, but very rewarding. Reducing time to make repairs and work simplification gleaned from observations and employee recommendations learned from making multiple daily inspections resulted in years without lost time accidents at two plants, reduced maintenance and 33-75 % improvement in cost per ton at A. P. Green Refractories Co. Eufaula Calcining Plant 1972-77 and Oil-Dri Ochlocknee plant and mine 1979-82. The Ochlocknee mine worked 1981-2007 without a LTA. The author participated in 16 acquisitions and new plant design projects. All of above reduced costs allowed mining deposits with higher overburden to be used and considered. Thereby increasing reserves considered in all operations."

A proactive design and construct approach was used to remediate the Warm Springs Ponds Complex near Anaconda, Montana under "Superfund". The pond complex is used for treatment/settlement of heavy metals and is a repository for 19,000,000 cubic yards of tailings, precipitates and associated sediments. Remediation has resulted in treatment/settling capacity for flows up to the 100-year flood (3,300 cfs); expansion from 5 to 11 ponds in series requiring 12.5 miles of new or improved embankments with associated hydraulic structures; flood protection for the 0.5 Probable Maximum -Flood (PMF) (70,000 cfs); and closure of exposed tailings along with aquatic and terrestrial habitat enhancement.

Discussion by Dan Plazak The authors are to be congratulated for presenting a simple and practical tool for quick estimates of ground water flow rates. At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. As the authors noted, the Jacob-Lohman equation (1952) assumes confined-aquifer conditions. To use confined-aquifer equations in water-table aquifers, Jacob (1963) presented a correction to convert water-table aquifer drawdowns [Ahw] to equivalent confined aquifer drawdowns [Ah,: 2] [Ah Ah = Ah - w(1) Cw 2H where: Ah, = Drawdown in confined aquifer: Ahw = Drawdown in water-table aquifer and H = Original saturated thickness of aquifer] Substituting the above in equation ( I) of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson [4nT Ah - 2H ) Qj2.25 T t(2) 1 nr2 S W] Since the above expression predicts lower pump rates, it causes the Jacob-Lohman equation to agree more closely with appropriate analytical and numerical models. Figure 1, adapted from Fig. 5 of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson, illustrates the closer agreement of the modified equation to their numerical model, as reflected in Qm/QJL ratios closer to unity. The agreement improves particularly as drawdown [Ah] becomes large in relation to aquifer thickness H. An additional advantage of the modified equation is that Hanna, Azrag and Atkinson's correction factor C is much more stable as pit depth increases. Ventilation and refrigeration for mine climate modification, contributes significantly to the operating costs of a deep hot mine. Mine climate simulation programs can be used to minimize the impact of these costs. There are several computer codes available including CLIMSIM?, to assist in this work. Whichever simulation program is used, it is the mine ventilation engineer who must supply the input data. This paper raises and answers the following question, namely: what accuracy is required of the basic input parameters, in order for a certain precision to be obtained in the predicted air temperatures? In the first part of the paper a new approach is described to estimate the dry and wet bulb temperature of the airflow, either in a dry or wet roadway. The calculation procedure allows an arbitrary temperature change with time, using Duhamel's superposition solution. Matrix-vector representation is applied to simplify the computational structure. In the second part of the paper the sensitivities of the dry and wet bulb air temperatures are analyzed to the changes of the rock thermo-physical properties, the heat transfer coefficient and the wetness factor.

In truth, despite the development and refinement of new and potentially valuable technological tools, the approach or philosophy of the explorationist has received meager attention in professional literature. In many areas, the explorationist relies upon experience, subjective judgement and general intangible inspiration, often traveling together under the misleading pseudonym of "art," in achieving both an exploration plan and in making the myriad day to day decisions necessary to the execution of that plan. Without a solid, objective basis for decisions, exploration under this concept is little more than guesswork largely by intuition, and it is small wonder that many exploration programs flounder in a sea of over-expenditure inefficiency or fail to fulfill their expected goals within the funding which has been provided. From a rational management point of view, such a state of affairs is frustrating and inconsistent with the application of the same scientific principles which are presumed to be the basis for the exploration methods which are used. For grinding Portland Cement, the power consumption accounts for some 35 % of the total consumption of electrical energy for producing cement, counting right from the quarry to the packing plant. It is therefore for very good reason that great efforts during the past years have been put into making cement grinding more efficient, thereby saving power. In this paper three ways of reducing the consumption of electrical energy will be described, namely precrushing in the high pressure FLS-Köppern roller press, the introduction of a new design of COMBIDAN diaphragm in ball mills and the separation of mill discharge in the newly developed high efficient; separator SEPAX from F. L. Smidth.

Adsorption of residual flotation reagents onto equilibrium fluid cracking catalysts is a promising method of purification of flotation process water. In the present paper, adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), dodecyl ammonium chloride (DAC) and sodium oleate onto a spent catalyst from petroleum industry was studied by analysing the residual concentration of the surfactant after contact with the zeolite catalyst. The adsorption of the DAC was rather low but SDS and sodium oleate presented a high affinity for the catalyst surface. The loading capacity was 4.2 kg/ton for SDS and 5.5 kg/ton for oleic acid. After the treatment of the loaded catalyst with a HCI 1 N solution these surfactants are desorbed and the catalyst may thus be regenerated. This would be an additional advantage to its low cost, not to mention its condition as a discarded product and its availability in large tonnages.

Flocculant testing should be initiated for economic or performance reasons. When the decision has been made to test, the laboratory can provide valuable information concerning the various products under consideration. Properly conducted laboratory tests can determine: 1. If two flocculants are needed to achieve clarity or density. 2. Ease of mixing. 3. How quickly the material goes into solution. 4. Stability of prepared f locculant solution. 5. Stability of the floc formed. 6. Amount of mixing required for proper floe formation. 7. Optimum flocculant concentration. 8. Optimum pulp density. 9. Approximate location of the point of addition. 10. Single or multiple addition points. When a flocculant shows promise in the laboratory, a plant test should be scheduled. During the plant trial, arrange for normal conditions and start testing with a crew that is most familiar with the unit operation where the flocculant will be applied.

High brightness clays are produced from Georgia kaolin by flotation. Fatty acids are used commonly as collectors for anatase, which represents the major colored impurity in the crude. This process requires activation of the minerals with divalent cations such as Ca2+, in which case proper control of the activation step is crucial to the success of the flotation process. In the present work, laboratory tests have been conducted using alkyl hydroxamates as the collector for anatase. A major advantage of using hydroxamate is that this new collector requires no activator. The laboratory tests show also that the hydroxamate collectors produce consistently better products with higher yields from a variety of kaolin clays.

This paper presents a review of the grouting works of Line 2 of the Greater Cairo MetroSystem. The Nile River alluvial deposits underlying this ancient city provided for a challenging and sometimes difficult grouting project. Permeation grouting using state-of-the-art computerized grouting techniques, as well as extensive ground treatment by jet grout, was per-formed for soil consolidation and/or groundwater control. During the project, over 425,000m3 of ground was treated, requiring 1.4 million linear meters of drilling and PVC injection pipe, 54,000 m3 of bentonite cement and 230,000 m3 of chemical and mineral grout. In addition, over 70,000 m3 of ground was treated using the jet grout method. Relative to major international transportation projects, the grouting works for Line 2 of the Cairo Metro represent one of the largest worldwide grouting endeavors to date.

The expansion of surface mining has led to the development of very large off-highway trucks capable of hauling payloads in excess of 290 t (320 st). Mine haul roads have historically been designed empirically, relying heavily on local experience; the trend in increasing truck size will thus render the current pavement systems inadequate. Because truck haulage costs can account for 10% to 50% of the total costs incurred by a surface mine, not only would the maintenance costs of existing roads of inadequate design increase, but vehicle operating and maintenance costs would increase prohibitively. Thus, there is a need for improved design technologies encompassing the construction and management techniques of mine haul roads appropriate for the wheel loads of vehicles now in use. This paper presents the different components of a mine haul road design and management system and demonstrates the value of its application through case studies. The system has been applied at several South African surface mines, and distinct benefits have been derived. The improved structural design of a new road resulted in a 29% saving in construction costs and provided better service, while the optimal selection and management of wearing course materials provided better functionality at lower total transportation operating costs.

INTRODUCTION In both the United States and Canada, a company making a public offering of securities must comply with regulations which have been promulgated by Federal and/or Provincial Legislatures. This paper focuses on the regulations pertaining to reserve reports required by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). SEC RESERVE FILINGS Reserve reports made to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission are the only reserve reports which are directly regulated by the United States government. The requirements for SEC reserve reports are set forth in the filing forms as shown in Appendix A, from Item 17A of SEC Form S-18. These reporting requirements, which are intended to protect the investing public from inaccurate or misleading claims, are primarily oriented to S-1 or other filings for new stock issues but must also be followed for annual 10K reports which must be filed annually by U.S. public corporations as part of the Corporate Annual Report. These undertakings require independent audits of reserves, mine designs, plant facilities and a general economic evaluation of the planned or existing operation as part of the backup documents for filing.
