H. P. Ferri I refer to the article "Degradation Process in Coal Slurry Pipelines" by M.G. Ayat and B.C. Scott in the September 1988 issue of Mining Engineering. I would like to congratulate Dr. Ayat and his colleague on a very interesting and valuable piece of work. This article is an excellent one, describing a real phenomenon that has been ignored for so long. I do, however, have an objection. The article fails to address the degradation process when coal is processed or transported in other ways than slurry form, particularly those employed in this work. Could, for example, screening (wet or dry) have contributed to the extent of degradation? Perhaps scanning electron micrographs of the samples examined and after screening would have helped to clarify this. I would like to point out that degradation is also observed in pneumatic conveying systems, mechanical conveying, and other means of transportations employed by the mineral industry. Reply by M. G. Ayat We gratefully acknowledge Dr. Fern's comments on the subject paper. As he so rightly points out, the degradation process is a real problem, not only in coal slurry pipelines, but also in many handling and processing equipment employed by the coal and mineral industry. Scanning Electron Microscopic examination of samples may offer very little information about the extent of degradation for several reasons. One is that preparing a representative sample that has undergone degradation will be extremely difficult if not impossible. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that SEM requires only very small amounts of material for testing. Secondly, there is a sample preparation step involved in the SEM examination and, as such, it would be very difficult to associate the extent of degradation to either sample preparation or handling and processing operations. Finally, it is probably worth mentioning that degradation is a multi-faceted phenomenon involving many natural and man-made factors. The logical approach to this problem would, therefore, seem to be a "one-step-at-a-time" approach.

Management teams at mining companies begin to ask themselves whether to take a company public and, if so, how to do it as they approach the normal threshold for going public in terms of revenue and operating performance. Today, the expense of going public generally suggests the company has at least $20 million in annual revenue and at least $2 million in cash. The revenue number can be lower for mining companies with large reserves. In order to properly attract the investing public, the company must also be operationally strong with robust prospects. The company should have a strong management team and a consistent history of double-digit growth that will continue into the foreseeable future. Assuming the thresholds are met, a company?s management needs to weigh the pros and cons of going public.

The aim of this study is to compare amino acids and organic acids in the extraction of gold from silicate ore. Amino acids were found to have higher efficiency of gold extraction than organic acids at the same acid concentration, which is likely due to amino acids having both carboxylic and amine groups in their structure, while organic acids only have carboxylic groups. Five amino acids (glycine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, lysine and tryptophan) and seven organic acids (citric, malic, tataric, fumaric, oxalic, succinic and ascorbic acids) were selected to investigate gold extraction efficiency. Aspartic acid was found to have greater capacity to extract gold than succinic acid. The optimal gold to aspartic acid molar ratio was 1:6, and low concentrations of aspartic acid extracted 35 to 42 percent of gold from silicate ore within 15 days. Further studies are needed to increase gold leaching and reduce incubation time. The results imply that aspartic acid can be used as an alternative reagent to traditional methods for extracting gold from ore. This method is nontoxic to humans, is environmentally friendly and can have real applications.

"Newmont Mining Corporation operates the Yanacocha mine in Perú and the gold milling section of the property includes a Sulfidization-Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) plant to remove copper from pregnant leach solution. Since its commissioning in 2008, the plant has been intermittently operated as needed to remove copper upstream of a carbon adsorption circuit. However, starting in 2015 Newmont expects the plant to operate on a more continuous basis in response to higher copper ores that will be processed in the gold mill. In anticipation of this, Newmont conducted a campaign in May 2014 with stockpiled high-copper ore to evaluate performance of the SART plant with elevated levels of copper in feed solution. Results from the campaign demonstrated the SART plant is capable of efficiently treating high-copper leach solution. During the campaign, leach solution copper levels ranged from about 100 to 700 mg/L, and copper removals ranging from about 56% to +99% were achieved. The median copper removal efficiency observed during the campaign was about 94%. The primary plant modification determined necessary following the campaign was the need to improve consistency with sulfide dosing. INTRODUCTION Copper removal from cyanide leach solution can be affected through the addition of sulfide at acidic pH to precipitate copper sulfide as a solid. There has been renewed interest in the process in the past several years due to the increasingly common issue of high copper levels in cyanide leach solutions. The term Sulfidization- Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) is used as an acronym for the process according to the primary unit operations utilized. At a pH of approximately 4.0 to 5.0, the addition of soluble sulfide to a copper-bearing leach solution will result in the precipitation of copper sulfide (Cu2S) solid. The overall acidification and sulfidization reaction is (assuming the use of sulfuric acid for pH adjustment): 2Cu(CN)3-2 + 3H2SO4 + S-2 ? Cu2S(s) + 6HCN(aq) + 3SO4-2 The above reaction is written relative to the copper-cyanide complex 2Cu(CN)3-2, though analogous reactions also take place with the other common copper-cyanide complexes Cu(CN)2- and Cu(CN)4-3. Sulfide in the above reaction (S-2) is normally supplied as sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) purchased in solid or concentrated liquid form. Two characteristics of this reaction that are beneficial to a leaching operation are: 1. Copper is removed from solution as Cu2S (synthetic chalcocite) solid, which can then be sold to a smelter for its copper value. 2. Cyanide that is complexed with copper in the leach solution is released as free cyanide, thereby regenerating cyanide that can be recycled to the leaching operation for continued use."

The opportunity for an exploration geologist to follow a successful exploration project through the feasibility, financing, construction, development, and exploitation phase is rare. In addition, it is not often that the exploration geologist can be present during the mining of a deposit to explain why certain actions were taken or interpretations made, and to find out how these interpretations turned out in actuality. At the Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos mine in New South Wales, Australia, mining has been- in progress for seven years and the writer of this chapter has been intimately associated with the project during the five years of exploration and seven years of exploitation. The Woodsreef mine has had major production problems, the majority of which have stemmed from the unique characteristics of the ore body and fiber. Because of the latter feature, much research has been undertaken by Woods- reef and other scientific organizations in Australia, England, and Canada regarding the Woodsreef fiber. The answers to some of the problems have negated some accepted concepts of asbestos ore milling and led to the development of new techniques. Some of these new techniques include the adoption of microscopic fiber counts as a routine procedure, the modification of accepted evaluation procedures, the development of new machines for dedusting fibers, and the recognition of a fiber with a unique milling behavior pattern and, possibly, properties. The problems experienced can be broadly divided into those associated with the geology and the physical properties of the fiber. It is possible that the same features may manifest themselves in other deposits around the world, and if they can be recognized during the exploration stages, a feasiblity evaluation may be just a little closer to the actual. The Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos deposit (latitude 30°24' S, longitude 150°44' E) is located 80 km north of Tamworth, NSW, Australia. The mine has been in production for six years and has a present scheduled mining rate of 33.11 Mt/y. An eight rock line mill treats an average of 7000 t/day, after beneficiation, and yields fiber grades in the range of group 4 to group 6 with some floats. The estimated re- serves of 30.56 Mt, with an ore to waste ratio of 1:3.0, are contained in two main zones that are designated the North and South zones. Mining started in the South Zone in 1972 and then, be- cause of the higher ore value, moved to the North Zone in 1975. Presently, there are two distinct open cuts referred to as the South and North pits that will eventually be worked together. The Woodsreef mine is owned by Woodsreef Mines Ltd. and is operated by Chrysotile Corp. of Australia Pty. Ltd., and is one of only two producing asbestos mines in Australia. The second mine is at Baryulgil, (latitude 29°13' S, longitude 152°37' E), and is operated by a subsidiary of Woodsreef Mines Ltd. This operation produces about 500 t/y for a captive market. An exploration program is being conducted in the area surrounding this small producer with a significant degree of success. The concepts developed during the exploitation of the Woodsreef deposit are being incorporated in the evaluation of the Baryulgil area, and if the Baryulgil deposit proves to be eco- nomic it is hoped that this approach will eliminate some of the major crises that have beset the production at Woodsreef during the first four years of operation. Wet-drum magnetic separators are used extensively for upgrading iron ore and for magnetite recovery in dense-medium separation circuits. In this study, the performance of a continuous, laboratory wet-drum magnetic separator was evaluated both with and without the application of ultrasonic energy when processing dense medium slurries. Test variables included magnetic-to-nonmagnetic ratio, solids concentration and nonmagnetic material. The Lynne deposit is a volcanic-to volcaniclastic-hosted, Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag orebody located in the early Proterozoic magmatic terrain of northern Wisconsin. As of February 1991, core drilling has partially delineated a multi-million ton, near-surface, disseminated to massive sulfide deposit. The deposit is hosted by a gently dipping sequence of fragmental rhyolites, felsic tuffs, less abundant dacite to andesite flows, and fine-grained volcanic sediments. The deposit is broadly conformable With the host rock stratigraphy, but the ore zones thicken and coalesce in the central part of the deposit.

This chapter deals with the Mine Safety and Health Administrations's (MSHA] concern and obligations with regard to asbestiform minerals. Asbestiform minerals are defined as the magical group of hydrated, silicate minerals that possess a fiberlike structure capable of being woven into cloth. Their unique combination of properties, such as resistance to heat and chemical attack, high tensile strength, and flexibility was recognized centuries before Christ. Pausanias, the early Greek geographer, speaks of golden lamps, made about 430 BC, with in- combustible wicks of Carpathian flax. The Ro- mans used asbestos as cremation clothes to con- serve the ashes of deceased persons of rank. Charlemagne had an asbestos table cloth that he used to pass through fire to clean (Lanza, 19381. Early recognition of the health hazards associated with exposure to asbestos was documented in the first century by Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist, and Strabo, a Greek geographer. Both wrote of slaves with sickness of the lungs, whose occupation was that of weaving asbestos into cloth. This concern for the health of asbestos workers disappeared over the ages. Today, with the use of modern technology, asbestos products have been greatly exploited. The asbestos output has increased over a hundredfold in the past 70 years. World production has jumped from 454 t/y (500 stpy) in 1900 to 4.5 Mt/y (5 million stpy) in 1978. An increase in health problems for asbestos workers accompanied this increased usage. However, it was not until the modern era that the association of asbestos with chronic respiratory disease was rediscovered. Reports were published at the turn of the century documenting the effects of asbestos exposure on textile workers. One such report in 1907 by H.M. Montague Murray described the post mortem findings on a 34-year- old carding machine operator. Murray de- scribed the lungs as showing extensive diffuse pulmonary fibrosis spicules of asbestos. Subsequently, more reports of pulmonary fibrosis following inhalation of asbestos were published, including an epidemiological study of asbestos miners in 1930 (Merewether and Price, 1930), at Thetford, Que., Canada. This study took place at the mine 52 years after large-scale mining of asbestos had begun. But, the cancer- producing potential of asbestos was not established until 1949 when a report by Merewether in England described an excess of cancer of the lung and pleura [the lining of the lungs) among individuals dying from asbestosis (Merewether, 1949). In the past decade much attention has been focused on asbestosis, mesothelioma, and bronchogenic carcinoma, as the three major biological effects associated with asbestos ex- posure. Parenchymal and pleural asbestosis is a fibrosis in the substance of the lung with thickening and often calcification of the membranes lining the thoracic cavity. Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the membranes lining the thoracic or abdominal cavities, and bronchogenic carcinoma is a cancer of the lung tissue itself. These diseases occur in various degrees and combinations. The severity and occurrence of these biological effects are directly influenced by conditions such as dose response relationships, intensity of exposure, duration of exposure, lapse of time since initial exposure, and cigarette smoking. Numerous studies indicate that the relationship between these conditions and the incidence of disease is proportional. Congress has recently concluded (Congressional Record, 1979) that, "exposure to asbestos fibers has been identified as significantly in- creasing the incidence of cancer and other severe or fatal diseases such as abestosis." "THE SS640 AGRIGENTO-CALTANISSETTA PROJECT The Caltanissetta tunnel is part of the works for the construction of the second 28km-long maxi section of the SS 640 motorway of Porto Empedocle, from km 44 to the junction of Imera in Sicilian hinterland. Amongst other major infrastructure works, the €740 million ANAS (Italian national roads and highway administration agency) project consists of four twin tube tunnels three of which are being excavated by conventional means. The longest tunnel, underpasses the Caltanissetta city and has a length of 3.9km under a maximum overburden of 120m. The JV consisting of CMC of Ravenna and TECNIS SpA won the design & built tender in 2010. Construction started in early spring 2012 following the approval of detailed design and later on the approval of design for construction. THE CALTANISSETTA TUNNEL The Design Phase Tender design and detailed design foresaw the construction of 13.4m excavation diameter tunnels that were to be enlarged in a second phase to create, every 600m, 50m-long tunnel sections for emergency parking. During the design for construction project phase the JV proposed to replace the 13.4m tunnel with a 15.08 excavation diameter that incorporated apart from the two 3.75m wide lanes a 3.25m wide continuous emergency lane. This significant tunnel section modification was associated with better road safety conditions, simpler and safer construction procedures, better statics for the tunnel section while in terms of overall cost the solutions were equivalent.Geologic context The tunnel is located in the middle of the geologically known Caltanissetta basin that is intersected by various tectonic structures. The geologic context for the tunnel scale, was defined in collaboration with the University of Catania in early project phases. For almost its entire length the tunnel is excavated in the Terravecchia formation that represents the lower part of the stratigraphic sequence that was formed in the Tortoniano period of Miocene. The quite complex geological model is also characterized by the presence of the so-called Trubi formation that consists of clay and marl clay. Almost 90% of the tunnel traverses formations that are quite similar in terms of excavation behavior. Exception to this are thrust zones and a calcareous stretch of the alignment. This last segment has a length of 200m and was identified since the very beginning as a tunneling challenge due to the combination of very poor geotechnical properties and an important water load."

It is well known that manguniferous silver ores containing manganese intimate) associated with silver are not amenable to conventional extraction methods. The segregation process has been applied primarily to the recovery of copper from oxidized and oxide-sulfide ores. A new alternative process, consisting of segregation roasting followed by flotation to recover the silver from refractory manganiferous silver ores, was studied using a 23-factorial experimental design. Laboratory investigations were conducted on a manganiferous silver ore analyzing 0.02% copper, 0.09% lead, 0.33% zinc, 12.55% manganese and 187 g/t silver. The investigation was designed to study the effects of the addition of salts, coke and copper (11) oxide on silver recovery. The results indicated that 79.3% of the silver can be recovered in the absence of copper oxide and 88.4% of the silver can be recovered with a copper oxide content of 1.5% at 750°C, 2% salt (NaCI). 1 % coke and 30 min of roasting. It was concluded that the addition of copper oxide improves silver recovery.

Geochemical studies were under- taken in the Breckenridge mining district to test the effectiveness of soil and rock-chip samples in high- lighting known mineralization in the district, and in locating sites of possible porphyry-type mineralization, if such mineralization is present in the area. Soil sampling can be done more quickly and more cheaply, but it does not provide a direct site- specific sample of mineralized rock. In well-developed soils, supergene effects may mask and/or displace primary hypogene effects; and even in places where the soils are poorly- developed, as in the Breckenridge district, the masking effects may be felt. Soil anomalies, if present, likely will be of lower amplitude and more diffuse (widespread) than corresponding rock-chip anomalies. On the other hand, detailed rock-chip surveys are more time-consuming and expensive, even though they yield direct geologic information in addition to the chemical data. The goals of the combined soil and rock-chip programs were (1) to com- pare the data from the two; and (2) test the effectiveness in identifying significant chemical anomalies with respect to the geology of the district, as it is presently understood.

As the program says -we'll he talking about the expectations of the Management of an Industrial Mineral enterprise relative to the activities of geologists engaged in that enterprise. Industrial Minerals is such a large industry both in tons produced and in value of product -and of such diversity and complexity of participating enterprises, minerals and products that I doubt if anyone person can speak for the entire industry as to the expectations of management with respect to the geologist. I'm sure there are major differences in emphasis between segments of management as to the relative importance of the different aspects of the geologists' role in the scheme of things. However, we will try to generalize concerning what we consider to be important factors and to be more specific perhaps of some of the factors with which we have had direct assessable experience.

The principal concepts of computer control and automation have been successfully applied in industries world-wide, The enthusiasm generated by the proponents of computer control, and the apparent mystery enveloping the techniques of computer control, have caused attention to be focused on this infant industry from all quarters. Consequently, the motivation to "computerize" may be the hope that computers will solve all economic problems. The truth remains that not only have there been monumental successes, but there have been some colossal failures. This paper will attempt to outline a generalized guide to computer control and present methods for avoiding some of the major pitfalls. Since the investment required for computer control systems has been drastically reduced in the past year, small operations will likely find that computerized process control is attractive in areas where it has never been considered before, The discussion presented here is intentionally non-technical and directed towards those who may soon find they have a possible application for a control computer. The primary purpose of computer control is to reduce expenditure and increase profits by improving the quality of product, increasing the efficiency of operation, reducing the materials and man hours required or a combination of these. Success or failure to reach the desired goal depends, to a large degree, on a well-planned approach. This includes recognizing a possible computer application, properly defining the job which is to be accomplished, evaluating computer systems, selecting a capable manufacturer, and following through with sound systems engineering and programming.

The flotation of coal in the fie and coarse particle size ranges presents particular problems. Fine or ultra-fine coal less than 100 microns presents a challenge to conventional flotation machines because the rate of capture of the coal particles can be very low, so longer residence times are needed. Also, conventional mechanical cells are not normally designed with froth properties in mind. Froth drainage may be inadequate, leading to excessive entrainment of ash. The upper limit of flotation of coal is normally put at about 500 um (30 mesh). It appears that, in mechanical cells, coarser particles tend to be torn away from bubbles in the turbulent environment created by the impeller. In this paper, results are presented from plant trials of a high-intensity flotation column of novel design, namely the Jameson cell. Extensive trials have been conducted on coal slurries with a top size of around 1 mm. Size-by size analysis shows that it is possible to achieve high yields of low ash product over the whole particle size range.

This first section of case histories of mineral discoveries, Vol. 3, covers some of the milestones in porphyry copper and skam exploration successes. It was during the era of these discoveries that large, complex exploration departments emerged as permanent adjuncts of large mining companies. The discoveries helped shape how and where exploration activity was conducted. Probably the most important factor in exploration success is management. Few management people are mentioned in this section or in any exploration history, yet the distinction between success and failure ultimately rested with the decisions they made. One of the most successful groups was initiated by Roger Straus and Herbert Brownell when they sought to make Asarco into an important metal producer. Relying on Clem Pollock and L.H. (Bill) Hart to identify and push worthwhile projects, the Asarco management remade the company. Asarco will benefit from exploration successes com- pounded by that team for years to come. Duval is an example of a management that decided to add metal production to its industrial minerals output. When Page Morris was president, that company opened three major porphyry copper mines and became an important factor in metals. Under the Monis management team, Duval became a leader in exploration. At the other end of the scale are managements that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and by so doing changed the character of their companies in other ways.

"Mining on Seattle’s SR99 tunnel began in July of 2013. Initial mining progressed slowly through a 4.5 m (14.9-ft) thick fiber-reinforced concrete headwall before immediately entering the first of three planned safe havens. Once through the headwall and safe haven the machine would move through roughly 122 lineal m (400 ft) of jet grout improved soil at a rate of slightly more than 1.6 m/d (5.3 ftpd). It was anticipated that once mining has passed through the improved area, “Bertha” – now the world’s second largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), would be moving at a rate of almost 11 m/d (36 ftpd). By the end of October 2013, Bertha had mined roughly 131 m (430 ft), averaging 1.4 m/d (4.7 ftpd), and had begun mining within native soils. By the start of December 2013, tunneling had reached the 244 m (800 ft) mark and Bertha was averaging 3.6 m/d (11.9 ftpd), achieving as much as 12.8 m (42 ft) of progress on given days. Unfortunately, on Dec. 6th, 2013, Bertha began to stumble and all progress quickly came to a halt.Initial reports stated an obstruction had stopped Bertha in her tracks. The preliminary investigation involved installation of 10 deep dewatering wells to reduce the hydrostatic pressure within the ground around the TBM, to allow the contractor’s personnel to inspect the cutter head from within and also to investigate for the presence of obstructions at the face of the cutter head. During inspection, the contractor’s crews found fragments of steel pipe entangled in the cutter head. The steel was apparently from an abandoned 254 mm (0.9 in.) diameter monitoring well casing, previously installed by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to monitor groundwater conditions for the design and planning of this tunnel project. After the steel was removed from the cutter head and cleared from Bertha’s path, she attempted to move forward but was only able to generate a slow crawl."

The paper discusses the evolution of the geometallurgical model at the Escondida mine in northern Chile, the world’s largest copper producer. It highlights the transition from early metallurgical forecasting methods to a comprehensive model that includes spatial distribution of metallurgical forecasts. This model helps in planning and adapting to the variability in ore characteristics, such as hardness and mineralogy, which affect processing performance.
