'IM existing predictive methods were chosen for evaluation; an influence function (Bals Theory) and a profile function (hyperbolic). These ere applied to several field measured subsidence profiles over United States coal mines. The effect of homogeneous versus non-homogeneous overburden on surface subsidence is demonstrated and the utilization of Bals Theory as a subsidence predictive method for both types of overburden is examined. The major factor affecting subsidence profile characteristics is the migration of the inflection point toward the centerline of the longwall panel. A computer program was written to aid in the analysis.

The handling and disposal of mine water is a much larger problem than is apparent at first glance. Many more tons of water are removed from underground coal mines in the United States each year than tons of coal. In the old anthracite region of Pennsylvania the average was around 32.7 t (36 st) of water for each ton of coal produced, while bituminous mines average about 4.5 or 5.4 t (5 or 6 st). Water encountered in the mines may come from several different sources. In mines with light cover and without a firm solid roof, rain may seep directly into the workings. This is also true of deeper mines where pillar falls have broken the roof to the surface. The top under creek beds is generally faulty and broken and water comes through the roof at this point. Deeper mines are frequently overlain by water-bearing strata and pillar breaks and faulty top can admit water, while places running to the dip often accumulate water which comes up through the bottom. In all cases, except where passing under a year-round stream, the amount of water made is usually pretty closely connected with the weather-more water during the rainy season, less in the dry, although the deeper a mine is, the longer it is before changes in rainfall are felt. Another source of water, not connected with seasonal changes, is old water, accumulated over a period of time in abandoned workings of the mine, or from flooded adjacent mines. Here the water filters through the coal, the parting, or comes up through cracks in the bottom. Similarly, core holes, drilled to prospect the property, can be a source of unexpected water and modern safety requirements for dust-allaying water at the working faces can turn a pleasant working area into a soggy mess over the weekend if the system is not properly maintained and operated. Why water must be disposed of is obvious. If allowed to accumulate, sooner or later the mine will fill up, or at least it will become "roofed" in low places, blocking ventilation and traffic. It must be controlled long before it reaches this stage. Water standing in the working faces is unpleasant for the men who have to work there and also cuts down on the amount of work they can do, as they must watch where they step all the time. It is especially unpleasant in low coal.

Natural zeolites are gaining recognition as an important commodity with an increasing number of industrial and consumer applications. This potential has prompted the Anaconda Minerals Company and other firms to investigate occurrences and markets for zeolites. The deposits of mordenite-rich tuff at Rome are of interest for their economic potential and for the excellent opportunity they provide to study a zeolite deposit formed in a hydrologically closed basin. Location The Rome property is located approximately 9 km west of Rome, Oregon, in Townships 31S. and 32S., Range 41E., Malheur County. It lies within the Owyhee Uplands of the northern Basin and Range physiographic province (Figure 1). The area discussed here includes a major portion of the depositional basin in which the zeolitic tuffs occur.

INTRODUCTION Since the nineteen fifties, process engineers have been seriously concerned with process models for various purposes (1,2,3). Models serve as subroutines to mathematical flowsheets which simulate circuits of interest. Simulators can serve to increase process know- ledge, assess circuit performance, investigate flowsheet modifications, evaluate new flowsheets, perform off-line optimization, and compare alternative control strategies. This chapter describes a methodology to develop a simulator of a bulk Cu-Mo circuit comprised of roughers, scavengers and 3 stages of cleaning. The simulator was employed to evaluate the influence of water addition at circuit points and to estimate the optimal number of cells for each stage in the circuit. DESCRIPTION OF CIRCUIT Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the Brenda Mines Ltd. (located near Peachland, B. C.) bulk Cu-Mo flotation circuit as simulated prior to an expansion/renovation which involved the installation of large, new flotation cells. Referring to the flowsheet, feed to rougher cells includes fresh feed, scavenger concentrate and 1st cleaner tailing. Rougher con, 1st cleaner (sect ion 2) con and 2nd cleaner tailing are fed to 1st cleaners (section 1). 1st cleaner (section 1) concentrate and 3rd cleaner tailing serve as 2nd cleaner feed, while 2nd cleaner concentrate is fed to the 3rd cleaners which produce a final bulk concentrate. Table 1 lists cell types and specifications important to the circuit. DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS To develop flotation cell models a systematic procedure was employed (4). This involves the selection of responses and factors, proposing models to be fitted, the acquisition of raw data, the statistical adjustment of raw data, fitting models to adjusted data and testing the adequacy of fitted functions. Responses and Factors Responses of interest included recoveries, concentrate grades and concentrate solids/water flow rates for each stage. Factors that influence these responses, such as reagent addition rates, air flow rates to cells, solids and water flow rates to stages and feed grades were not manipulated during the sampling period. Although chlorine oxidation has been found to be effective in destroying the CN ion, an excess of chlorine is needed to drive the reaction to completion. This often results in the formation of residual chloramines, which are toxic to aquatic life and often regulated by various states. The interhalogen, bromine chloride (BrCl), has been found to be just as effective but without the formation of persistent, residual chloramines. The hydrolysis and subsequent disproportionation of the highly-polar BrCl molecule essentially yields a solution of hypobromous acid (HOBr) and nonoxidizing hydrochloric acid (HC1). Studies have been carried out to directly compare the mechanism of CN destruction with chlorine and bromine chloride.

Jigging is a process of particle stratification in which the particle re- arrangement results from an alternate expansion and compaction of a bed of particles by pulsating fluid flow. The vertical direction of fluid flow is reversed periodically. The rearrangement results in layers of particles that are arranged by increasing density from top to bottom of the bed. This response, developed from the many and continuously varying forces acting upon the particles, permits a solid-solid separation more related to particle density and less to particle size than any other "hydraulic-type" process. The stratification is usually carried out in a rectangular, open-top container called a jig, in which the mass of particles (termed a "bed") is supported on a perforated base through which the water flows in alternating directions. The coal particles, in addition to the vertically expanded and compacted bed motion, move continuously, horizontally across the supporting screen. Following the particle stratification, the particle bed is physically "cut" at a desired horizontal particle density plane to separate the desired clean coal product from the more dense refuse. The jig system includes means for continuously introducing the raw coal and for moving the water through the coal bed in a controllable manner, as well as for separating and removing the stratified particles from the system as two or more product streams. In coal preparation, this highly versatile unit operation is applied preferably to a wide size range of particles with top sizes up to 8 in. (20 cm) rather than to a closely sized fraction. In gravity ranges, the process has been applied to gold particles with a density of 19.3 and to coal particles having densities less than 1.30. Single jig washers have capacities from 5 (4.6) to greater than 700 tph (637 t/h) of feed coal. The separation results attainable by jigging have favored this unit operation as optimum for creating a clean coal product as required by steam coal specifications. Al- though the jig is used in preparing coals which are difficult to separate, its limitations to achieve both quality products and high recovery are being recognized in comparison with heavy media-based processes which make sharper separations from feeds having high "near-gravity" contents. The accu- racy of the densimetric stratification in the upper portions of the jig bed are less precise. It follows that coals with more than 10% near-gravity material

"Federal regulations require the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines. Mobile RAs have a limited ability to dissipate heat, and heat buildup can lead to a life-threatening condition as the RA internal air temperature and relative humidity increase. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Office of Mine Safety and Health Research performed heat testing on a 10-person tent-type training RA and contracted ThermoAnalytics, Inc. to develop a validated thermal simulation model (TSM) of the tested RA. The TSM was used to examine the effects of the constant mine strata temperature assumption, initial mine air temperature (MAT), initial mine strata surface temperature (MSST), initial mine strata temperature at depth (MSTD), and mine strata thermal behavior on RA internal air temperature using 117 W of sensible heat input per simulated miner. For the studied RA, when the mine strata temperature was treated as a constant, the final predicted RA internal air temperature was 12.8°F lower than it was when the mine strata thermal behavior was included in the model. A 10°F increase in the initial MSST resulted in a 7.1°F increase in the final RA internal air temperature, whereas a 10°F increase in the initial MSTD yielded a 2.5°F increase in the final RA internal air temperature. INTRODUCTION Since 2008, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has required the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines (1). MSHA requires that RAs provide an environment with breathable air for entrapped miners for a 96-hour period. Heat buildup inside an occupied RA is a serious concern. Without a means to dissipate the heat and humidity generated by the occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system, the temperature and humidity inside RAs could lead to severe discomfort or heat stress depending on the mine ambient temperature before and during occupation of the RA. NIOSH recommended an apparent temperature limit of 95°F in its 2007 report to Congress (2). In 30 CFR 7.504, MSHA has specified a maximum apparent temperature of 95°F inside an occupied RA (3). The apparent temperature is calculated using both air temperature and relative humidity (4). Calculations could be used to determine if the air within an occupied RA will reach the apparent temperature limit. In these calculations, in order to simplify the problem, the mine temperature could be assumed to remain constant. With this assumption, the effects of the mine strata thermal mass and thermal conductivity on the heat buildup in an RA are ignored. OMSHR research has shown that the mine air and strata temperatures surrounding an RA increase when subjected to the heat of an occupied RA (5). Thus, calculations performed with the assumption that the mine temperature is constant would under-predict the resulting dry-bulb temperature and apparent temperature for a given RA occupancy. The mine air temperature has been used as the basis for RA temperature calculations. However, research has not been used to confirm that the mine air temperature is the appropriate basis."

Surface mining consists of the removal of the geologic strata overlying the coal seam usually with large electric shovels, draglines or bucket wheels. The method produces more or less parallel ridges or peaks of cast overburden, usually called "spoil banks". The mined lands vary widely in their inherent characteristics to produce a vegetative cover and thus can be put to a wide variety of uses. Use is the key to economic and social benefits. Physical and Chemical Characteristics of Soil Material of Surface Mined Lands after surface mining operations, the soil material is a heterogeneous mass whose physical and chemical properties are dominated by the character of the geologic strata overlying the coal. These strata are highly variable in thickness and character. They may include the surface soil, loess, glacial till, sands, shales, slates, limestone and sandstone rock. The method of mining with the several types of mining equipment will also affect the resultant mined area.

The amount of fines in run-of-mine coal has been increasing and coal quality has been deteriorating as a result of the increased use of mechanized and continuous mining methods. Removing the mineral matter and pyritic sulfur from coal prior to combustion will lower transportation costs, improve power plant performance and reduce sulfur dioxide emissions. Since physical cleaning methods can only remove individual particles of mineral matter and pyrite, it is necessary to crush and grind coal to fine sizes to separate these contaminants so they can be removed by deep cleaning processes. The increased portion of fines in run-of-mine coal together with attempts to increase the mineral matter removal efficiency have stimulated interest in fine coal cleaning technology. However, there are many problems to be solved before fine coal cleaning can be applied to power plant coals. These problems include: 1. coal cleaning plant capacity is reduced when conventional cleaning circuits are modifies to deep clean coals; 2. existing equipment and technology is not suitable for cleaning fine coal; 3. coal recovery is reduced; and 4. fine coal is difficult to dewater, dry, handle, transport and store.

For small precious metals mining to show a comeback a different perspective must be taken than that of larger mining companies. This perspective must be much the same as that of past successful smaller mining enterprises such as when the US had a need for Uranium. Abandoned mines and environmental concerns in older mining districts have discouraged many from entering with the attitudes of why try there if so many unsuccessful mines exist. A small mining venture can be successful there but must have a "think smart'' attitude. There must be a thorough understanding of deposits, utilization of advanced technology and a properly managed mining operation. "THINK SMART" MINING The small mine operator is usually looking for small high grade deposits, consequently, long term success depends on a series of small successful mining operations. The small miner must succeed right-off or credibility and future project funding will suffer. No veteran of even a few years in the mining industry needs to be told that a dollar spent on production today fails to yield as much as it once did. More efficient equipment and techniques have helped soften the problem, but there is little likelihood that a mining company can do much to control inflation, wages, regulations, or grade. That leaves the small miner to "think smart" as one area where operating dollars can still be stretched to produce more than they presently do (Gardner. 1981). In the planning stage of a mining venture, when most options are still open, the main controllable elements are market timing, deposit selection, cutoff grade, mining method, mine design, mining sequence, rate of production build up, process design, project financing structure, project management, and project ownership structure. During planning, optimum criteria can be established for each of these. Once a mine is in production, these options are foreclosed or at least severely constrained. The more thought given to a mining program using all information available the less the risk of encountering disabling surprises. Thus the intent of this paper is to suggest the "think smart" attitude most small mine operations use for long term success. If one looks at a number of successful mining ventures, whether large or small, there is a general logic most have followed to be successful. They have used proven exploration, mining and processing techniques along with economic evaluation and experienced personnel to improve their odds. LOGIC IN DEVELOPING A FEASIBLE VENTURE Most successful small mine ventures achieve positive cash flow as quickly as possible by seeking out those deposits which require the least time and expense on activities leading up to production. To do this they look for deposits that are the most accessible, easily investigated, mined and processed with the cheapest fundamental methods. The general sequence of events starting with district selection are deposit selection, preliminary feasibility, exploration, detailed economic feasibility, mine planning, development and production. Each successive step becomes more costly requiring intermediate decisions along the way. District Selection Small operations should look for known deposits which favor the occurrence of the type deposit sought rather than efforts in unproductive areas. Known deposits in developed areas have some advantages over remote areas: 1. More alternative methods of transportation are available. 2. A larger stable work force is available. 3. The area is usually more pro-mining. 4. Power, water, housing, technical services, skilled services, schools, recreation and shopping are available.

Froth flotation of coal is growing in importance and complexity. Some of the reasons for these changes follow. 1) A need exists for energy resource conservation. 2) Preparation plants are processing widely varying coal -- deep seam, strip and stockpiled either separately or as blends. 3) More fines are being generated because more mines are using automatic mining equipment. 4) It is more practical and economical to remove ash and sulfur at the preparation plant than during utilization.

Mining of the Schefferville iron deposits began in 1954 on completion of the 574 km railway linking the mines and the St-Lawrence river port of Sept-Iles. Apart from crushing, no treatment of these ores was required before smelting. In the late 1950's, testwork began at Schefferville to develop a process for upgrading the extensive lower grade deposits containing 5l% iron with 15% silica (natural analysis). Engineering for 6.1 million tons per year Beneficiation Plant using cationic silica flotation and the A-C Grate kiln began in 1970 and the first pellets were produced in mid 1973. Production requirements and operating difficulties have restricted capacity to approximately 85% of design but ongoing improvements are being made continuously to attain design capacity.

The present work discusses the nuances of scaling and flow similarity to develop a 1/40th scale version of a longwall coal mine. Details on the geometric, kinematic, and dynamic scaling of the physical model are presented and discussed. This works also discusses using a 30% CO2 – 70% He gas mixture as a surrogate for methane. It also presents the implications of various Reynolds numbers (ranging from 7,000 to 140,000) and rotation of the shearer drums in the dynamic representation of the airflow and gas mixtures in the physical scaled model.

In a previous paper presented at the 1966 Annual Meeting of AIME we reported our work, conducted at the Pennsylvania State University, on the hydrocyclone washing of fine coal.' The initial evaluation based on that work demonstrated the feasibility of hydrocyclones as fine-coal cleaning devices, and in that previous paper we presented selected test data that showed in principle how product yield and assay respond to variations of the major cyclone operating variables. The present paper reports in greater detail on the findings and presents a comprehensive evaluation of our data as follows: ? Hydrocyclone throughput rates were related to feed pressure and other variables by regression equations. These equations are compared with other capacity- versus-pressure drop expressions taken from the literature on classification cyclones.

Event cameras are used for their performance in high dynamic-range lighting conditions which are canonical to active mining environments. Direct labeling of event-based image data to train a model to perform semantic segmentation using traditional methods is slow and error-prone. This study proposes a framework to use roughly hand-labeled color images from a mine as an input to an intermediary probabilistic algorithm called alphamatting to generate a ground-truth data set. These high-fidelity labels can be used to train a semantic segmentation model to differentiate the support strap from the roof. This model can then be leveraged to segment an event-based scene to enable autonomous roof bolting. This pipeline has been shown to achieve an accuracy of 88% with a false positive rate of 3%.

INTRODUCTION The past decade has witnessed a literal explosion in formal modeling of energy systems and markets. This rapid development was stimulated primarily by policy issues arising from the energy price shocks of 1973- 1974 and 1979- 1980. The suddenness of this interest is illustrated by comparing the current and earlier editions of Mineral Economics. The third edition, published in 1976, includes an addendum to the section of projection and forecasting methods because, Since the foregoing chapter was written, major events in petroleum have caused an explosion in formal modeling efforts in the energy field.a In contrast, this fourth edition includes the present chapter on energy modeling, and a separate chapter on nonfuel minerals modeling. The considerable interest in formal energy models is based on the complexity of the system, in particular the interaction between technical and engineering data and designs, and economic behavior of energy producers and users. Energy is a vital component in the economic and social well-being of nations, and must increasingly be explicitly considered in developing economic growth and welfare policies. Energy models can contribute to policy development and analysis, both by improved understanding of the energy system, and of the interaction between energy markets and the economy, and as an explicit means of analyzing and comparing the implications of alternative policy actions. At their best, formal models can clarify and illuminate policy options. In this chapter we will survey the objectives, methods, and potential contributions and limitations of energy system modeling. Section 2 considers the objectives, scope, and approaches to energy system and market modeling. Methodological approaches are then discussed more formally in section 3. Our approach is to intro- duce each model type and method via relatively simple generic models, illustrating their use by a selective review of the applications literature. Section 4 shifts the focus from modeling methods to procedures for model evaluation and improving model credibility especially in policy research and analysis. We conclude with some brief remarks on directions and opportunities for future modeling research. ENERGY MODELS: OBJECTIVES, SCOPE AND APPROACHES The concept of a model usually evokes an image of a complex, computerized system of mathematical or econometric equations providing detailed information concerning the operation of the process being modeled. In fact. models may be simple or complex, formal or mental, depending upon the purposes for which the model is intended. After a brief definition of asbestos and a review of regulations, the elements of asbestos dust control are outlined for various asbestos manufacturing industries. To prevent the asbestos dust to become airborne, the general procedure is to control the dust at the source by enclosure and exhaustion. The asbestos dust is collected and removed from the air with bag filter collectors of high efficiency (better than 99%) to ensure that the air emitted to the general environment or returned to the workplace are below the existing asbestos emissions regulations. Dust control systems should be regularly inspected and serviced to maintain at all times the efficiency and reliability of the equipment. Other effective procedures for asbestos dust control are also considered.

Relatively few longwall mines in the U.S. operate under multiple seam conditions where the two seams are less than 200 ft apart. This paper describes the experience of six that do. These operations are located in PA, WV and UT, and include examples of both undermining and overmining. Some operate above or beneath their own workings, others are in historic mining districts and must contend with abandoned mines that are decades old. The lessons that these mines have learned cover a broad range of topics, including: • Whether to stack gateroads or place them under old gob areas; • How to size pillars and select artificial support to cross longwall stop lines; • How to use yield pillars to minimize multiple seam stresses and coal bump potential, and; • When to anticipate the creation of pathways for gas, water, or oxygen between current and abandoned gobs.

The mining and minerals extraction industries have often been demonized by the public as industries that put profits and production before people. It is true that the inherent danger of the work has led to more fatal accidents than anyone associated with the industry would care to remember. But, in stark contrast to what has often been said, the truth of the matter is safety is now the top priority of every miner, from the face of the longwall to the executive boardroom. Without safety, nothing else matters. This message was told and retold by representatives from some of the world?s top mining and petroleum companies from Oct. 11-13 during the inaugural Safety and Reliability in the Mining and Resources Industries Conference in Calgary, Canada. The meeting was hosted jointly by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME). It was the first of a series of conferences to focus on these important topics. Next year, the conference will be held in Minneapolis, MN from Nov. 13-15.
