Money... not many subjects are as personal or as emotional. Hessiod said it well in 700 B.C. "Money is life to us wretched mortals". Are you getting paid enough? Does your company reward its top people? Does coal or copper pay more? Production or engineering? How is the synfuels industry going to influence mining salaries? Do high salaries attract and retain the best people? Do modern compensation systems ensure fairness or destroy entrepreneurial spirit? With our tax system and high standard of living why are we so salary conscious? Salary is not only important for what it can purchase but it is also a yardstick, measuring how well we are doing. We all need money to pay the bills and maintain our standard-of-living, but once we reach a certain point the psychological ramifications become more important than the purely practical side. Even necessary payments like the mortgage and the car are a function of our egos. Are our choices of cars and homes based on simple transportation and shelter?

The Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB) now commands 30% of the US utility, coal market due to the region's low mine production costs, competitive rail rates and low sulfur content. In 1997, production exceeded 240 Mt (265 million st). This was an in¬crease of 104 Mt (115 million st) since 1989 and 4.5 Mt (5 million st) above 1996. Continued growth is expected as the second phase of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) approaches. This growth will be the greatest in the southern part of the Basin where coal quality is higher. Coal characteristics SPRB coal is classified as subbituminous due to its low heating value and high moisture content. The coal is characterized by low sulfur and ash contents, low ash fusion temperatures and high reactivities. In 1997, the average heating content was 8,593 Btu/lb, with an average sulfur and ash content of 0.79 lbs S02/million [ ] Btu and 5.13%, respectively. The distinguishing characteristic of SPRB coal is its low sulfur content. Most SPRB coal contains less than 1.2 lbs S02/million Btu. This is the approximate definition of "compliance" coal for Phase II of the CA AA. Much of the coal, particularly in the southern part of the Basin, is referred to as "super-compliance" coal due to SO2 contents of between 0.4 and 0.7 lbs SO2/million Btu. The SPRB is divided into three geographic clusters based on coal quality. Although more than 100 thorium-rare earth minerals are known, only a few have any commercial significance. Monazite, thorite, bastnasite, and some exotic thorium rare earth ores are reviewed Commercial interest is presently centered on monazite from the Union of South Africa, and thorite from this country. Thorium became commercially important with the development of the incandescent gas mantle about 75 years ago, Gas mantles consist of thorium oxide with small amounts of cerium oxide. The thorium nitrate used to make gas mantles was first obtained from rare thorium minerals, As a matter of fact, this use of thorium is still important and is one of the largest commercial uses for thorium materials. The discovery of monazite sand placer deposits along the coasts of Travancore, India, and in some Brazilian beach s .s, and the development of the old North and South Carolina monazite stream placers gave the mantle industry of 30 to 40 years ago a comfortable inventory of thorium ore. Even today, the thorium industry depends largely upon monazite ores for its source of thorium. This paper will briefly describe some of the major thorium ores and their principal deposits insofar as they relate to the thorium industry in this country. Because of similar chemical and physical properties, thorium always occurs with the rare earth elements and with varying amounts of yttrium. Thorium may predominate over rare earths, as in thorite-type minerals, or may represent only a fraction of the rare earth content. Typical ratios of thorium to rare earths in various minerals are given in Table 1, The average thorium content of the earth's crust is about 12 grams per ton, and in this respect thorium approximates lead, molybdenum, and some of the rare earths in abundance. The ore minerals of greatest importance to the-thorium-rare earth industry are monazite, thorite-type minerals, bastnasite-type- ores, and the family of minerals which is characterized by a preponderance of the heavy rare earths and yttrium. The latter classification includes xenotime, gadolinite, samarskite, euxenite, etc, The first two, monazite and thorite, are of greatest significance.

The former mayor of Los Angeles, CA is a believer in public transportation but thinks neither his city nor the entire country is spending enough on basic infrastructure. In fact, the United States has fallen behind most other developed nations in improving public transportation, the former mayor said. Antonio R. Villaraigosa was the keynote speaker at the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, held June 22-25 in Los Angeles, CA. The event, held every two years, is sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This years? conference attracted 1,091 underground construction professionals from around the world. The accompanying exhibition continues to grow, attracting 142 exhibiting companies occupying 162 booths. As always at NAT, registered attendees received the proceedings volume of the conference, which contains 132 papers. The proceedings volume, including a CD of the papers, is available from SME for $149 member, $139 student member and $189 nonmember. In this paper, several commonly used computer truck dispatching criteria are evaluated. A computer-oriented truck dispatching and production simulator was developed to provide data for comprehensive cross comparison among the dispatching criteria. The definitions, primary considerations, characteristics, and performances of these dispatching criteria were investigated. From the simulation results, it was concluded that, in general, no one criterion can dominate all others. All basic dispatching criteria including minimizing truck waiting time, minimizing shovel waiting time, minimizing truck saturation, maximizing truck momentary productivity, or truck routes optimization provide a local optimal solution. To obtain a direct global optimization solution for this complex stochastic process does not appear to be likely. Therefore, the search for an optimal dispatching criterion that will fit all conditions may not be realistic. However, based on the simulation results of the mine operation, several dispatching criteria which have good potential to increase performance can be selected. It may be necessary to search for the best combination of these truck dispatching criteria for a given situation. For example, a truck flow measurement such as the truck clustering factor at shovels can be used as a switch parameter to change from one criterion to another. The values for the switch parameter at which actions should be taken to change the criterion can be established through simulation programs.

Respirable (PM-10) crystalline silica is regulated by the State of California as a carcinogen. The risk-management of this material by the State exemplifies the inherent problems in the development of regulations based on current risk-assessment practices. The influence of extremely conservative risk-assessment and risk-management can be expressed in economic impacts including the increased cost of production, reduced competition, increased prices, reduced employment and redistribution of income. This paper attempts to contrast theoretical risk- assessment and risk-management with current application using crystalline silica as an example. Based on health information pertaining to silica, the paper examines federal and State of California regulatory and public policy positions. Using current risk factors and empirical data for the Central Valley of California, the projected incidence of lung cancer in humans is examined. While such an analysis would project an extremely high incidence of lung cancer as well as silicosis, not a single case of either lung impairment has been recorded within the study area or throughout the world in the general population. This suggests that sound guidelines for the analysis of scientific information have given way to the assumption that virtually any information representing a substance as a carcinogen is to be considered valid with little or no qualification.

The total iron ore production in Sweden in 1969 was 33.3 million metric tons. 31.7 million tons were exported mainly to Western European countries. 27.8 million tons (87 per cent) originated from the mines at Kiruna, Svappavaara and Malmberget, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Planned production for 1970 is 25 million tons during 10 months, due to a strike at the beginning of the year. Present production plans for the next five years expect an annual export capacity around 33 million tons in 1975, including 5.7 million tons of pellets. The mining and shipping at the loading terminals of Narvik on the Atlantic coast and Luleå at the Gulf of Bothnia are managed by LKAB - a 96 per cent state-owned company. 4 per cent of the share capital is owned by the private Grängesberg Company. The railway - 106 miles from Kiruna to Narvik and 130 miles from Malmberget to Luleå - is operated by the State Railways in Sweden and Norway. Comprehensive expansion of the Narvik ore port will be carried through during the next five years to increase the annual shipping capacity to at least 35 million tons and meet the development of rapidly growing ship sizes.

The Rochester Mining District is located some twenty-five miles NE of Lovelock, Nevada. The District was discovered and named in the 1860's by prospectors from Rochester, New York. For a number of years, they worked Rochester Canyon, sinking shafts and inclines and making open cuts. After reaching a depth of approximately eighty feet, the miners tapped an underground channel and were driven from these workings by a strong flow of water leaving pumps in the shaft and barely escaping with their lives. With the Rochester workings no longer accessible, the miners went to the southeast and established the Relief Mining District. About 1881, gold was found in the gravel at the mouth of American Canyon, to the east of Rochester. These placers were worked until 1895, first by the Americans who reportedly took out $1 000 000, and later by the Chinese who mined the gravel with great skill. It was estimated that the Chinese took out as much as $10 000 000.

Introduction In 1983-84 Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. in Timmins, Ontario, started up the second commercial zinc pressure leaching plant based on the Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. direct pressure leach process. The first plant using this process was that of Cominco Ltd. at Trail, B.C. (Parker, 1981; Martin and Jankola, 1985). The Kidd Creek plant was constructed to take advantage of the extra capacity that the existing purification, cell house, and casting sections had in comparison to the roasters and acid plant. In addition, pressure leaching offered flexibility in other areas such as treatment of low grade concentrates. The process design package and the detailed design of the autoclave system was carried out by Sherritt. The detailed design for the rest of the plant was done by Cambrian Engineering Ltd. under the direction of Kidd Creek. The construction and commissioning of the plant has been described earlier (Johnston, 1983). This paper describes, briefly, the application of the direct pressure leaching process for zinc concentrates and the integration of the pressure leaching plant into the main zinc plant at Timmins. It discusses some of the startup problems and changes made to the plant. The damage following a fire inside the autoclave is also described. The subsequent repair and recommissioning of the autoclave has enabled Kidd Creek to demonstrate the originally sought advantages of pressure leaching and to take advantage of their extra cell house and casting capacity to produce more zinc. Process principles The development of the direct pressure sulphuric acid leach of zinc sulphide concentrate at temperatures above the melting point of sulphur and at elevated oxygen pressure has been described in detail in a number of papers (Martin and Jankola, 1985; Johnston, 1983; Veltman and Bolton, 1980; Kawulka et al., 1975; Veltman et al., 1977). The most significant aspect of the process is that sulphidic sulphur is converted to elemental sulphur in reactions that can be simply described as follows. ZnS + H2SO4 + 1/2 O2 ZnSO4 + S° + H2O (1) FeS + H2SO4 + 1/2 O2 FeSO4 + S° + H2O (2) The rates of these reactions increase with temperature. However, at temperatures above the melting point of sulphur, 12°C, the presence of a surface active agent is necessary to prevent the occlusion of the sulphide particles by elemental sulphur and the consequent termination of the leach. The zinc that is dissolved according to reaction (1), after purification of the zinc sulphate solution, is recovered by electrowinning. The iron that is put into solution according to reaction (2) is further oxidized to the ferric state and subsequently, as the acidity decreases, precipitates as hematite or as complex basic sulphates. MINERALS AND METALLURGICAL PROCESSING Examples of this are shown below. 2FeSO4 + H2SO4 +1/2O2 - Fe2(SO4)3 + H2O (3) Fe2(SO4)3 + 6H2O - Fe2O3.3H2O + 3H2SO4 (4) 3Fe2(SO4)3 + 14H2O - 2(H3O)Fe3(SO4)2(OH)6 + 5H2SO4 (5) (hydronium jarosite) The conventional zinc process involves concentrate roasting to produce zinc oxide and sulphur dioxide. The zinc oxide is leached in spent electrolyte and the sulphur dioxide is converted to sulphuric acid. The pressure leaching process can, therefore, be used to replace conventional concentrate roasting, sulphuric acid manufacture, and atmospheric leaching with one unit operation. Integration of pressure leaching into the Kidd Creek flowsheet A block flowsheet of the Kidd Creek zinc plant, with the new pressure leach plant integrated, is shown in Fig. 1. The original plant, which was constructed in 1972, is based on standard electrolytic zinc plant technology. Concentrates are dead roasted to remove sulphur. Sulphur dioxide is treated to produce sulphuric acid. Calcine is leached in two stages using cell-house electrolyte. Iron is precipitated as jarosite and solutions are purified to remove copper, cobalt, nickel, and cadmium to provide feed for a partially mechanized cell house. Zinc is plated from solution, and the resulting cathode is melted, cast, and sold (Johnston, 1983). The integration of the pressure leaching plant into the main zinc plant is relatively simple. As shown in Fig. 1, a fraction of the zinc concentrate and spent electrolyte are fed to the pressure leach autoclave, while part of the calcine from the roaster is used as a neutralizing agent in the oxidation step along with. the jarosite leach solution. The main exit stream from the pressure leaching plant is the slurry discharged from the oxidation step, consisting of neutral zinc sulphate solution, unreacted calcine, and precipitated iron oxides. This slurry is transferred to the neutral leach step in the main zinc plant. The leach residue from the pressure leaching step, consisting of basic iron sulphate and elemental sulphur, is washed and impounded along with the jarosite residue produced in the main plant.

Occupational exposures to respirable dust and submicrometer aerosols emitted by diesel-powered equipment are a health concern for underground mining operators and regulators. A study was conducted in an underground mine with the objective to identify, characterize and source apportion airborne aerosols at the setup face and recovery room during longwall move operations.

The West Gates Deicing Industrial Waste Pond Expansion project at Denver International Airport seeks to expand utilities to accommodate additional terminal gates. The project includes six tunnel crossings beneath taxiways and runways with lengths ranging from 239 to 2,025 linear feet. Excavation methods include shielded tunnel boring machines and steerable auger boring. Designed initial support includes liner plate, steel ribs and lagging, steel casing, and Fiberglass Reinforced Pipe and ranges in size from 24" to 132". This paper will discuss challenges associated with the overall layout and design of the project, including contingencies to protect critical infrastructure. In addition, a construction update is provided.

There is an increasing requirement for geophysical surveys carried out during geotechnical investigations to provide direct information about rock quality or other geotechnical parameters. With the paucity of information to correlate geophysical results with actual rock properties, this is still difficult to achieve and additional research effort needs to be performed to address this issue. Nowadays, several researchers have been described detailed studies which designed specifically to investigate this matter. Generally, geophysical techniques which are used to estimate seismic velocities in the subsurface focus on the low strain levels that are not large enough to induce significant nonlinear, nonelastic stress-strain behavior (Luna and Jadi, 2000), which is normally evaluated when addressing liquefaction potential of soils in the shallow subsurface. Soil parameters relevant to seismic ground response (Rechtien, 1996) are density, relative density and void ratio, permeability, shear modulus, water saturation, soil fabric and stress history. Detailed characterization of elastic properties near a major construction site (e.g. a bridge) is useful for near field dynamic analysis of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects. The coupled effect of the bridge foundation (piles, piers or abutments) and the soil immediately surrounding these substructure elements is essential for dynamic SSI analysis of these critical bridge structures. This paper presents a geophysical investigation performed along the under construction highway of Egnatia Odos, approximately 13 km west from the town of Xanthi in N. Greece. Twelve geotechnical boreholes, drilled at the maximum depth of 75 m, approximately located 20 m from the Nestos River. The objective of the survey was to obtain the high-resolution compressional and shear wave velocities of the shallow subsurface for computation of elastic engineering properties of the unconsolidated material interposed between the investigated boreholes. Joint interpretation of borehole logs and velocity images obtained by P- and S-wave traveltime inversions outlined shallow geological anomalies.

"INTRODUCTION The Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) project, located in the north-east New Territories of Hong Kong, will form the seventh land crossing between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HK) and Shenzhen in China (Figure 1). The BCP project comprises an 11km long dual two-lane trunk road linking the border crossing facility to the existing road infrastructure in HK and when completed it will facilitate future regional development and alleviate frequent traffic congestion at the existing Boarder control points.In December 2013 Dragages Hong Kong (a member of the Bouygues Construction Group) was awarded the 5.4km long Contract 2 section of the project, including the 4.8km long Lung Shan Tunnels, by the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Government of the HK SAR. To overcome the difficult ground conditions anticipated along the Contract 2 section of the project the tunnels will be constructed using mechanical and drill and blast (D&B) excavation techniques together with a 14.1m diameter multi-mode Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Land constraints imposed on the project alignment require that the final 500m section at the northern end of the Lung Shan tunnels, under Princess Hill (Figure 2), takes an almost 90 degree turn towards the north. The resulting 354m radius curve restricts the sight-line of road users to below the minimum 110m at 80km/hr hence, the internal span of the tunnels needs to be increased from 12.6m, in the standard straight section, to 15.4m in this curved section to accommodate a widened shoulder which will provide the required sight-line distance."

Longwalls using shearers in seam heights of less than 1.2 m (48 inches) are relatively rare in the U.S. Westmoreland Coal Company is currently operating a shearer-equipped longwall at a cutting height of 1.17 m (46 inches) in its Bullitt Mine. This face has averaged 2795 metric tons/day of operation since its startup on April 3, 1984. Longwall productivity in thin seams is substantially impacted by equipment reliability and availability of useable working room for travel and access. This paper addresses the design criteria used in selecting this face equipment, with the goal of maximizing these two parameters. Equipment discussed includes shearers. face conveyor, shields, stageloader, and emulsion system.

Expansion of the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant requires interconnection of three operating pump stations using only two existing 10-ft diameter shafts for access. These two existing shafts require additional support to allow access 130 feet below grade. Interconnection requires rehabilitation of an existing tunnel, excavation of two new tunnels, and abandonment of additional existing tunnels. Construction has discovered unexpected conditions at all three connection points. The CMAR contracting method has effectively accommodated project team discussion, value engineering decisions, and allocation of risk during preconstruction and construction phase services.

The minerals barite (BaSO, -barium sulfate) and witherite (BaCO, -barium carbonate) are the chief commercial sources of the element barium and its compounds, whose many uses are nearly hidden among the technical complexities of modem industrial processes and products. Barite, the major ore mineral, is extremely vital to the petroleum industry, which in 1990 consumed about 90% of the world's production of 4.9 Mt as a major ingredient of the heavy fluid called mud that is circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The remaining 10% of the barite production was consumed chiefly in the manufacture of barium chemicals and glass and as a pigment, filler, and extender. Barite is found throughout much of the world and is available from three major geologic types of deposits-vein and cavity-filling, residual, and bedded-in sufficient quantity at competitive prices to meet current demands. The world's demand for barite is expected to increase because of the world's need for oil and gas. Geologic circumstances are favorable for the discovery of new deposits of commercial value. Witherite, desirable as a raw material for the production of barium chemicals, is much less common and abundant than barite.

The Kivcet process is technologically the most advanced of the new lead smelting processes which have been developed over the past decade construction of the first commercial scale Kivcet lead smelter which has been designed by KHD Humboldt Wedag for Sociedad Complejo Metalurgico de Karachipampa is at present nearing completion in Bolivia. Some of the measures taken to minimise emission of harmful elements as well as methods employed to minimise energy consumption in the design of the smelter, are presented. Results of recent testwork which have added to the flexibility of the process are summarised.

Once an ore body has been probed and outlined, and sufficient information has been collected to warrant further analysis, the important process of selecting the most appropriate method or methods for mining can begin. At this stage, the selection is preliminary only, serving as the basis for a project layout and feasibility study. Later, it may be found necessary to revise the details, but the basic principles for the ore extraction should remain a part of the final layout. With respect to the basic principles employed, relatively few mining methods are used today. For the purposes of this presentation, the principles are classified as follows: 1) For naturally supported stopes, the available methods are room-and-pillar mining and sublevel stoping. 2) For artificially supported stopes, the available methods are shrinkage stoping, cut-and-fill mining, square-set mining, and longwall mining. 3) For caving methods, the available techniques are sublevel caving and block caving. Due to the uniqueness of each ore deposit, the variations on each of these methods are nearly limitless. It is impossible to include even the major variations in this chapter; the goal of this chapter is to present the principles as a guide to the mining engineer in adapting the general methods to specific needs. The selection process described herein is intended to supply the techniques by which the candidate methods available for a given ore body can be reduced to one or two feasible approaches. The feasible approaches then can be evaluated in detail, and the particular modifications can be investigated. In describing costs and economic factors, all values herein are expressed in terms of 1978 US dollars.

The Illinois State Geological Survey's program in industrial minerals is twofold-the gathering of information on mineral raw materials and the generation of data on the use of these materials. The first function is carried out by the Industrial Minerals Section and the Clay Resources and Clay Mineral Technology Section of the Geological Group, and the second is the responsibility of the Chemical Engineering Section of the Chemical Group. Gathering in formation on raw materials includes both mapping of resources and fundamental geological research. Recent and current research projects include studies relating lithologies of limestones to their physical properties, investigation of sulfur dioxide reactivity of various types of limestone, lithostratigraphic studies of limestones of Mississippian age, investigations of heavy minerals in Cretaceous, Tertiary, and Pleistocene sands, studies of the environments of clay deposition, electron microscope studies of clays and limestones, and investigation of long-term expansion in ceramic products. A relatively recent development that relates more to dissemination of information than to research is environmental geology. This affects the Survey's industrial minerals program chiefly by stimulating the study of rock and mineral resources in metropolitan areas and reporting the results for the land- use planner as well as the engineer or mineral producer. The Survey's program of research on the use of industrial minerals was expanded and diversified in 1966. Incorporating a minerals beneficiation lab, the program is designed to develop new uses for existing mineral resources and to assist producers in implementing these ideas: Projects of the minerals engineering program have included the separation of a feldspar concentrate from certain glacial outwash and river sands, recovery of kaolinite from the waste from silica sand operations, development of the use of an Illinois clay as a binder for pellets, and investigations into the use of fly ash and fluorspar mine tailings.
