Exploration for ore deposits in southeastern Missouri in the 1950's resulted in the important discovery of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955. Further discoveries in the area led to the naming of the Viburnum trend. It has sometimes been referred to as the "New Lead belt" to distinguish it from older lead-producing areas to the east. As presently developed, the "trend" is 35 miles long, running north and south about 50 miles west of the Lead belt. Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined, with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chalcopyrite (copper) and silver recovered as economic by-products. The ore body is as much as 140 feet thick and 1,200 feet wide, and is found in the Bonneterre Dolomite (Upper Cambrian) at depths ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet. Since its discovery many companies have engaged in exploration and several major companies have developed new mines and constructed mills and a smelter in the area. The first mine in the Viburnum trend came on stream in 1960, but as more mines came on stream and others reached capacity, lead production increased to the point that the Southeast Missouri Lead district produced 432,576 tons of lead in 1970 to become the world's largest lead-producing region (Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources, 1971). The Viburnum trend area with its rolling, heavily forested hills and numerous clear running streams is in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. Until the recent development of its mineral resources, the area was sparsely populated and nearly unmarked by the activities of man. "EH-pH diagrams are useful tools in understanding how mineral surfaces react in solution and particularly how aqueous conditions can be changed to enhance mineral leaching processes. Successful application of these diagrams, however, requires that several considerations be kept in mind to prevent what had been termed as “gross errors” in their calculation and use. In this paper, the aqueous Cu-S system is used as the basis for explaining the mass-balanced method of calculating EH-pH diagrams with the STABCAL thermodynamic equilibrium software. A breakdown of the Gibbs’ Phase Rule and how it is used in STABCAL to modify the diagrams is included. The methodology was applied to the aqueous Cu-As-S system, and resulting diagrams were compared against examples of those generated using the predominant-ion method. The complexity of such diagrams increases with every additional component, and competition between species becomes more apparent, as can be seen by curvature in the resulting mass-balanced diagrams. The complete diagram for enargite (Cu3AsS4) is shown. It compares well with spectroelectrochemical measurements from Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry studies.IntroductionInnovation in the field of processing arsenicbearing copper ores has been of particular interest. Copper arsenic sulfosalt minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennanite (Cu12As4S13) are now frequently prevalent in ore bodies as the oxide and easily leachable sulfides become harder to find. These minerals, unless pretreated somehow, concentrate in copper sulfide flotation processes, in turn concentrating the arsenic levels. Increasing environmental restrictions on arsenic content for smelters makes the hydrometallurgical processing of these concentrates more favorable. While enargite is considered one of the more refractory copper sulfides, more so than chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), there are still several methods, both industrially proven and in development, that are capable of processing these ore types. Alkaline sulfide leaching can be used as a pretreatment method to solubilize arsenic selectively (Delfini et al., 2003; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008; Tongamp, Takasaki and Shibayama, 2010a, 2010b), or the entire metal content can be leached using acid-type leaches such as acidified ferric sulfate (Dutrizac, 1981; Hackl et al., 1995; Klauber, 2008), or the chloride assisted, CESL (McDonald and Muir, 2007) or nitrogen species catalyzed (Anderson, 2003) processes can be used.As development of these leaching technologies proceed, it is also important to develop an understanding of the mineral thermodynamics. To date, there are numerous studies on the Cu-Fe-S-H2O system, particularly as it relates to chalcopyrite leaching, yet few studies have done on the Cu-As-S-H2O system. Computer-generated EH-pH diagrams have been employed to illustrate the importance of thermodynamic calculations in providing insight into such a system."

Automation and robotics are the keys to new intelligent autonomous mining systems which can remove operators from the hazardous and stressful mining environment and provide the tools for greater productivity. This pa-per presents the components necessary for a mining Intelligent Task Control System (ITCS) in dynamic unstructured mining environments. The proposed concept is applied to develop the ITCS for an autonomous excavator. The design and implementation of a fuzzy logic controller for an excavator that uses force/torque sensor feedback to complete excavation tasks is presented. Initial experimental results are also given.

"Tunnel safety is evolving as science, engineering and technology make advances. Applicable safety codes and standards simply do not cover all the potentials of design, construction and operation. This paper reviews a series of tunnel projects code gaps in Seattle USA that were uncovered during the design and construction of a new highway tunnel, conversion of bus tunnels to combined road and rail tunnels, new rail tunnels using TBM and NATM, conversion of a road tunnel to light rail, and retrofit of an existing road tunnel to add lanes and improve safety systems. The perspectives of the ‘fire code official’ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) on methods to identify and resolve gaps in safety code and standard regulations, while garnering the consensus of the owner, designer, and contractors are presented. Additionally, the emergency responder command perspective on safe tunnel design, tunnel rescue during construction and operational safety is explained TUNNEL SAFETY EVOLUTION The underground has become nearly the only option to provide essential transportation corridors to continue our economic growth in key global areas. Tunnels are not built on a whim. Often significant portion of a regions wealth are invested to meet current, and hopefully future transportation demands. There are more transportation tunnels being built now than at any time in the planets history. The location of these tunnels is often selected for us based upon regional demand. Most commonly under densely populated urban centers and between populations’ centers to bypass geologic conditions like mountains and water bodies. Tunnels are being built in unforgiving soils, between tectonic plates, in extremes environmental conditions and often, under the very heart of the highest density population centers on the planet. All of these locations can bring with it conditions that challenge our common assumptions about safety. These extraordinary locations and soils create risks for both those constructing the tunnel, and in design engineering to meet the ‘minimum’ requirements at the lowest costs. There is lengthy history of above ground safety. Most countries and major local jurisdictions have adopted, or created safety requirements for the construction of above ground buildings. Through decades of use, these safety requirements have evolved, changed and been expanded to cover a wide gamut of actual and potential safety risks. However, the use of the underground for tunnel transportation corridors has grown exponentially with limited attention to safety requirements."

An example illustrates the use of ASTM Standard E901-82, Classification System for Uranium Resources. The example demonstrates the dynamic nature of the process of classification and attests to the necessity of addressing both the aggregate needs of broad-scale resource planning and the specific needs of individual property evaluation. Problems that ,remain in fixing the classification of a given uranium resource include the uncertainty in estimating the quantity of undiscovered resources and resolving the differences that may exist in deciding when the drill-hole spacing is adequate to determine the tonnage and grade of discovered resources.

Two of the open-pit, copper-molybdenum mining operations of Duval Corporation are located in the foothills of the Sierrita Mountains approximately 30 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona. In March 1959, mining from a moderate sized porphyry deposit known as the "Esperanza orebody" was begun at a rate of 10,000 tons of ore per day. Some five years later, a sizeable group of mineral claims west of Esperanza became available to Duval. Earlier exploration and development drilling in this area by others indicated an orebody of greater size but lower tenor than that of Esperanza. A drilling program conducted by Duval not only verified the results of the prior drilling but in addition, revealed a continuation of the mineralization to the south and east. Thus was developed the Sierrita orebody. Open pit design delineated 414 million tons of ore containing an average copper content of 0.35 percent and a molybdenum content of 0.036 percent. In April 1966, the office of Emergency Planning authorized General Services Administration to undertake a program under the Defense Production Act to en¬courage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national defense. Duval's Sierrita Project was brought to GSA's attention in May 1966 on November 28, 1967, an agreement providing for the development of the Sierrita Property was consummated with GSA. In March 1970, the first copper-molybdenum concentrates were produced in the 72,000 tons-per-day concentrator. Pre-production stripping exceeded the scheduled 105 million tons despite the comparatively short lead time available to equip the mine, build the mine plant facilities, and staff the technical, supervisory, and labor forces. Shortly before the first concentrates were produced, plans were being formulated for a program to increase processing capacity by approximately 15 percent, which entailed increasing overall mining capacity by approximately 50,000 tons per day. This program is scheduled for completion early in 1971.

The analysis of the phenomena involved in the determination of the compressive strength of iron-ore agglomerates leads to the identification of the important parameters. It is shown mathematically that the pellet rupture strength is proportional to the cross-sectional area. Fracture is initiated at the center of the pellets by the tensile stresses developed by the compressive loads normally to the compression axis. The variation in strength between individual pellets of identical composition and subjected to identical treatments is due to internal voids of varying sizes, that act as stress-concentration sites. Two novel testing procedures are proposed. The first consists of testing the pellets between two plates having three steel spheres each. This configuration simulates much better the environment actually encountered by the pellets. The second procedure consists of a thick-walled cylinder in which a piston penetrates; a large group of pellets is tested simultaneously, as the stress versus strain plot is being recorded. This latter test presents significant advantages over the conventional testing procedure; the main one is that one single test is sufficient to characterize the mechanical response of the pellets.

Artificial intelligence has emerged over the past two decades as an important problem-solving tool including techniques such as expert systems, neural networks, tree classification, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, etc. These methods can be employed to solve rock mechanics and ground control problems associated with the highly complex nature of rock masses and ground conditions. A current study at the University of Alabama focuses on development of an artificial intelligence system for real-time interpretation of the data collected from longwall monitoring stations, and development of an early warning system for prediction of undesired conditions and prevention of longwall-mine instability problems. This paper describes a ground control management system using UALSAS (The University of Alabama Longwall Stability Analysis System), which is being developed to facilitate maintenance, on-line analysis, prediction, and includes an early warning system. A detailed framework of computer algorithms and their applications are also discussed. The successful application of these artificial intelligence techniques will contribute to a safer and healthier mining environment.

As a result of the Farmington explosion, the U. S. Bureau of Mines commissioned the National Academy of Engineering to a determine what steps could be taken in a short time frame to significantly reduce fatalities as a result of underground fire and explosion in coal mines. Three areas were named by the Academy as having the greatest potential; survival, communications, and rescue. The Bureau subsequently awarded a $3-5 million contract to the Special Systems Division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation for the development of prototype equipment and procedures. These were recently tested in a simulated emergency situation and will be delivered soon. Contractor recommendations for utilization and for further development effort will be studied and appropriate action taken.

"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies. REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). "Tunnels are built with a design life expectancy of over 100 years. One key component of such a design is the waterproofing system, which must reliably fulfil its function during the whole service lifetime of the tunnel structure. This paper deals with the determination of test criteria for the durability assessment of geosynthetic products in tunnel sealing systems. Hereby the understanding of the individual aging processes is crucial along with the long-term experience with these materials to ensure the transfer of the laboratory results and performance to site practice (test calibration) and vice versa. To verify the results of the new test procedure the material properties of geosynthetic products samples removed from older tunnels are investigated. Based on the presented results of the still ongoing research programs some preliminary conclusion regarding the updating of regulations for tunnel sealing systems are given. INTRODUCTION Watertightness is directly related to the durability and serviceability of the concrete lining. Therefore, modern traffic tunnels and shafts (Figure 1) are generally protected against mountain/ground water and water penetrating through rock fissures by a sealing system, for example with a loose-laid polymeric sheet membrane. Hereby the waterproofing sealing systems must be reliably fulfilling their function during the whole service life of the tunnel structure, regularly of more than 100 years. In consequence, the quality and lifetime performance of the waterproofing materials—beside the correct professional and careful installation in a tunnel infrastructure, is of great importance. The challenge for the industry, owners, operators and designers is ultimately the development of qualification testing and requirements (acceptance criteria) for products to ensure the design lifetime performance. Hereby the qualification procedure is seen as a routine integrated in standards, norms or guidelines, wherein test procedures should cover typical environments for the specific application fields. Polymeric synthetic raw materials are increasingly used in products with long service lifetimes (e.g. in injections, gaskets, waterbars, spray-applied and sheet waterproofing membranes). During service they are subjected to chemical (e.g. oxidation processes) and physical (e.g. changes in morphology) influences from the environment, which affect their mechanical properties—and they age. Hereby organic materials are more affected than inorganic materials. Also, polymers show strongly temperature-dependent properties compared with other construction materials. However, their long-term aging behavior is not given per se and has to be explored extensively by suitable tests, which simulate—under accelerated processes—real exposures and loads. Hereby the understanding of the individual aging processes is crucial along with the long-term experience with these materials to ensure the transfer of the laboratory results and performance to site practice (test calibration) and vice versa."

A relatively simple model of grinding which incorporates both the Bond grindability equations and the population balance equations has been extended to form a comprehensive simulation package that can describe most kinds of conventional grinding circuits. The package has two programs, with the first consisting of an input program which helps the user to specify the prescribed circuit, while the second program performs the actual simulation. The package serves two main purposes - i) as a check on mill design, with the output providing not only predictions for the product passing size but also of the full product size distribution, and ii) as a means to assess the likely effects on the product size distribution of operating under different sets of conditions.

Blasting practices based on sound engineering principles are well established but the successful application of these practices requires accurate information about the overburden geology and close supervision of the drilling and blasting operations. Good design alone is not sufficient to insure good results, but the process may be difficult to control unless steps are taken to measure the variables and to provide management and the operators with the information they need to establish and maintain control. Satisfactory blasting can be defined as loosening and fragmenting the rock so that it can be handled by the excavating equipment, while at the same time, governmental regulations on air blast and ground vibrations are not violated. Optimum practices achieve these objectives at the lowest combined cost of the drilling and loading operations and the blasting materials. Total system optimization, that is, taking into consideration the effect of fragmentation on the cost of operating and maintaining excavating equipment as well as drilling and blasting costs, probably is not a reasonable goal at the present time.

Fine coal cleaning by froth flotation has become common practice in the U.S. with more than 80,000 tons treated in this way per day. In spite of this large tonnage, developments in the automatic control of coal flotation circuits have lagged significantly behind those for mineral systems. One reason such developments have been limited is that instruments have not been available for the on-line measurement of carbon or ash and another critical variables in coal slurries. A second reason is that the influence of the operating variables on coal flotation has not been completely understood. During the last few years some of the required instrumentation has been developed and an improved knowledge of the flotation process itself has occurred through mathematical modeling; as a result certain control strategies for coal flotation are beginning to emerge. This paper attempts to evaluate several control strategies using a detailed flotation dynamic simulator, DYNAFLOAT. After constructing a process matrix for the system of interest, promising alternatives for linking manipulated and controlled variables have been analyzed. In order to develop combined grade and recovery control strategies, the authors found it necessary to construct a grade/recovery map with the aid of the simulator to drive the system to known final, feasible grade/recovery operating conditions. Finally, an advanced strategy which uses an on-line model to identify disturbances and take control actions is proposed.

Concentrate flowrates have been measured for the flotation of -100 mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer controlled 0.076 m x 3.5 m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height), air flow rate, and solid feed concentration. The size distribution of concentrate and tailings samples were determined. The results obtained show that the concentrate flow rate was independent of collection zone height, but dependent on the gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of these fundamental operational parameters.

Mott MacDonald and Project Management Advisors are providing Technical and Project Management services for San Diego County for the Courthouse Commons Project. The Courthouse Commons Project involves the redevelopment of three downtown blocks owned by San Diego County and construction of an Inmate Transfer Tunnel between the County Central Jail and the San Diego Central Court. The tunnel will be 327 feet long, crosses the San Diego Fault and is being constructed using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). This paper discusses the history and procure‑ ment strategy for the project, the technical aspects of the transfer tunnel and the con‑ struction progress of the tunnel to date.

"Acid rock drainage (ARD) is produced when sulfides are exposed to oxygen and water. Oxidation reactions typically result in a depression of pH and leaching of solutes and metals. Many oxidation models have been developed based on oxygen diffusion, but in environments with high permeability, other transport processes (i.e., convection and advection) can play an important role. Multiple sulfide mineral phases with differing oxidation rates should also be incorporated. WROC, a finite-difference model, was developed to account for these factors in predicting ARD. The program includes sulfide mineral oxidation using a shrinking core mechanism, heat transfer by conduction, heat of reaction and oxygen transport by diffusion and advection. The model was validated using data from the literature. After validation, the WROC model was used to simulate several different waste rock scenarios, including different forms of sulfide mineralization and the effect of implementing a waste rock cover. The results demonstrate that including specific sulfide mineral phases can have a significant effect on oxidation and that implementation of a cover can also aid in reducing waste rock oxidation.IntroductionAcid rock drainage (ARD) is a notable environmental concern in areas where rock or other material with acid generation potential is disturbed. ARD is defined as drainage that occurs as a result of sulfide oxidation in rock exposed to air and water. ARD is characterized by low pH, elevated metals concentration (especially aluminum, iron and manganese), sulfate and high total dissolved solids. The low-pH water that results from acid generation is capable of solubilizing heavy metals contained within the rock. The principal sulfide mineral in mine wastes is pyrite (FeS2). Pyrite oxidation is complex and can involve chemical and biological reactions. Oxidation of pyrite by atmospheric oxygen produces one mole of Fe2+, two moles of SO4 2- and two moles of H+ for every mole of pyrite oxidized, as described by Eq. (1)."

New erosion, corrosion resistant metal, ceramic, and polymer composite technologies are being developed and marketed by Alanx Products L.P. for use in hydrocyclones, pumps, valves, and other applications in mining and minerals processing. This paper will present an overview of the ceramic/metal composite material system and properties developed, which include excellent erosion/ corrosion resistance. Wear data will be shown from a variety of laboratory tests in dry and wet conditions, in aqueous neutral and corrosive environments. Comparisons will be made with a variety of competitive materials currently used in the industries sited. Data will also be presented on field tests with pumps and hydrocyclones in hard rock mining and other abrasive/corrosive environments. Field data from North and South America, as well as Australian mining applications will be highlighted.

The North Auckland Line (NAL) in Northland, New Zealand, is being upgraded to pass Hi-Cube containers. The line includes many tunnels and bridges which need to be refurbished to improve structural clearances and line capacity. Tunnel 2 along the line, the Makarau Tunnel, has posed special challenges. Opened in 1898, the tunnel suffered multiple collapses during construction and has shown significant distortion during operation. The tunnel has been repaired many times since opening. Successfully enlarging this delicate and distressed structure has involved historical research, advanced analysis and design, and careful construction. The results provide lessons for dealing with brick lined tunnels and poor ground conditions
