This paper examines the concepts of risk analysis and uncertainty in open pit mine design. It describes the relationship between risk analysis and uncertainty, describes methods that can be used to quantify uncertainty, and suggests ways of reducing the geological and geotechnical uncertainties that are inherent in open pit mining.

Gold mining in Waihi spans three centuries and five generations. Following the discovery of gold in 1878 the Martha Mine was developed and the town of Waihi grew up around it. Now, five generations later, descendents of many of the original settler families continue to live and work in Waihi. Many have returned to mining, in jobs far removed from those of their parents or grandparents.   Members of three local families were interviewed on video. This paper is a summary of some of the major themes and gives some insight into the role gold mining played in the development of the region and its continued its importance today.

Operation of a pilot heavy medium separation plant allows flexibility of operation not normally possible in an operating plant. Much useful data can be obtained, although some limitations apply. Projects carried out at AMDEL have included HMC separations at 1.5 to 3.6 specific gravity, comparative operation of HMC and DWP separators and the use of fine feed and product screens. Investigations of this type have provided a considerable amount of information on HMS plant performance and characteristics under a wide range of operating conditions.

Smelting at Mount Morgan started in 1906 with blast furnaces which were replaced by a reverberatory furnace in 1939. The second reverberatory, commissioned in 1944, was replaced by a copper flash smelter in 1972. Flotation concentrates, dried to 0.05 per cent moisture, were oxidised under accurately controlled conditions and produced 45 per cent Cu matte and a slag in the flash smelter. The matte was converted to blister copper and the slag was slowly cooled before grinding and retreatment in a flotation concentrator.

The current insurance market has been brought about by a number of pressures, including: collapsing investment returns; growing losses, both normal and catastrophic; and reserve strengthening. This is impacting most classes of insurance coverage, with the traditional characteristics of higher pricing and greater levels of retention, however it is now translating into a lack of capacity and reduced coverage. This presentation will explain how the market has arrived at this situation and will challenge whether this is the traditional insurance cycle or a structural correction. It will also address the anticipated time of correction.

Hydrocyclones are widely used in both mining and various industrial sectors. Considerable fundamental research work on the modelling of hydrocyclone classifiers has been carried out through the past 25 years. Based on the similarity principle, the hydrocyclone classification was taken as a whole physical process and a group of similarity numbers were obtained with the help of dimensional analysis in this paper. Then, the functional dependences of the similarity numbers have been established. The variables optimisation was carried out with the multiple objectives linear planning programs developed in this study.

The Adavale Basin and Warrabin Trough are remnants of a much more extensive Devonian to Carboniferous depression which evolved through four tectonic stages; an initial period of rifting and three periods of foreland thrusting, which cannibalized much of the earlier depression. The Basin has subsequently been buried by sediments of the Galilee and Eromanga Basins.The Basin was initiated during the Early Devonian when the earlier cratonized Thompson Foldbelt rifted away to form a marginal sea comparable to the South China sea. This crustal extension was probably in a Northeast-Southwest direction. These initial rifts were the site of acid volcanism (Gumbarbo Formation) and later, deltaic and shallow marine facies (Eastwood Beds).

In a typical production situation involving mining and processing activities, the standard approach has long been to seek improvements in each activity, effectively in isolation from each other. The process of design, measurement and review is essential if blasting is to continuously improve to meet the increasing productivity goals of most mining operations. To achieve continual improvements, many operators are turning to contractors to provide the necessary technology. Under this arrangement, the contractor becomes the supplier of a service rather than products and assumes some of the risks associated with blasting by guaranteeing the end result. If contractors are to obtain significant productivity improvements they must continuously improve every aspect of their business.

The task of re-engineering the system has now begun, and the first stage is operational. The mineralogy of ten trihydrate bauxites and their leached residues from bomb digestion tests at 140, 180 and 2400C was investigated and the resultsòcorrelated with analytical data. It is shown that increased recovery of alumina at high temperatures is due to. the dehydroxylation of goethiteòrather than the presence of alumina monohydrates. The effects of aluminous goethite -on the interpretation of "available alumina". results-and normative analysis are discussed and it is concluded that,'cautionòmust be exercised in interpreting the results of bomb digestion tests in terms of alumina hvdrates.

One of the mining worldÆs greatest challenges is to effectively use consumables (ie reagents and grinding media) to maximise metallurgical response, while minimising operating costs. It is anticipated that this paper will provide a logical frame work within which this can be achieved. The current study, at PerilyaÆs Broken Hill concentrator in the lead primary grinding/roughing circuits, examines the dependency of collector adsorption on Eh. The data demonstrates clearly that under the right grinding chemistry the addition of a xanthate collector during grinding can improve galena flotation. Further, operating the ball mill under the desired grinding chemistry regime leads to significant reductions in collector consumption whilst maintaining the metallurgical benefit.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. It gives me great pleasure to talk to you today about a pet subject of mine, on when to mill and when to leach gold ores. According to Gold Fields Mineral Services of London, gold production in the United States in 1989 amounted to about 8.5 million ounces (259t), an increase of 29 per cent over 1988 and 67 per cent over 1987. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reports that from the major producing states of Nevada, California, Montana, and Alaska, some3.2million ounces of the 1989 production were produced from milling gold ores and 2.3 million ounces from heap or dump leaching. Ap- proximately 45 million tons of ore were milled and 140 million tons of ore were heap or dump leached.
