During October 1947 an Authority to Prospect was granted by the Minister of Mines to lVIount Isa Mines Limited over an area of approximately 75 sq. miles to the north of Mount Isa.Application for the Authority to Prospect had been made after Zinc Corporation Limited had been granted prospecting rights over two areas, one of 1,265 acres immediately to the north of the Mount Isa Mines leases and the other of 1,960 acres adjoining the south end of Mount Isa Mines leases.METHODSAs a means of providing a cheap map of sufficient accuracy on which to plot geological features, both Mount Isa Mines Limited and Zinc Corporation Limited agreed upon aerial photographs and the two companies shared the cost of an aerial photographic survey by Adastra Airways of 130 sq. miles which covered the prospecting areas held by both companies.The photographs were on a scale of 800 ft. to I in. with 60% overlap on the north-south runs and 25% overlap east-west. A set of alternate prints enlarged to 400 ft. to 1 \in. were obtained for field work. The 400 ft. to 1 in. scale unglossed photographs (size 18 in. x 18 in.) were taken On to the field and rock outcrops, and uncorrelated structures were plotted directly on to them in red crayon pencil. The geological observations were then transferred in the office to a tracing on which accuracy of azimuth and scale was controlled by use of a photo mosaic and ground surveys.

IT is most remarkable and valuable property of mediurn and high carbon steels that they should be so susceptible to heat treatment, the wide range of variability in tenacity, ductility, etc, due to the normal influence of the carbon in the untreated material being enormously inereased thereby.The physical properties of steel and other metals are much more closely related to their structure than to their ultimate analysis.For instance, we may by chemical analysis determine the carbon content of a steel to be 0.5% ; but this information alone is insufficient to enable us to say what are the physical properties of the metal.Such a steel may possess 11 tensile strength of anything from 35 tons per sq. in., with much ductility, up to 80 tons per sq. in., with practically no ductility, according to its heat treatment. A microscopie examination, on the other hand, would show the structural composition of the steel, from which its physical properties could be approximately deduced. A considerable amount of psychological research has been conducted on human behaviour and its relationship to accidents. However, the research covers very wide fields and the findings drawn are so varied that at first sight they are confusing and there does not appear to be any major useful lead. I propose a discussion of a number of research findings to illustrate the variety and complexity of the human behaviour factors involved in considering safety. Such discuss- ion might point to some conclusions which could lead to an action programme to improve safety records.

Aspects of sampling are becoming more complex, involving a correct statistical approach to collection as well as geological and possibly pedological control. Advanced chemical techniques and techniques of rapid analysis need to be understood. Results may require statistical analysis. The elementary aspects of sampling still need constant attention by those controlling a programme of sampling. No one person will have sufficient knowledge of statistics, geology, pedology and chemistry to be fully conversant with all the aspects of sampling but, by developing a correct approach, problems can be identified and solved.

The fundamental natural ingredient of any mining development is an ore reserve. The classical definition of an ore reserve has both technical and commercial components, each involving elements of risk. By definition the desposit must contain mineral values which are "extractable at a profit". Metallurgy supplies a vital link between these two basic requirements of a successful mining project; the metallurgical input establishes the process by which the contained minerals may be recovered and converted into marketable product(s).

The different stages of the metallurgical evaluation of an ore resource and their importance to overall project evaluation are described. Particular emphasis is placed on the liaison that is necessary between the different members of the project team from the preliminary exploration phase through to the completion of the final feasibility study. Metallurgical input at the earliest stage is recommended. The incorporation of metallurgical and marketing data into ore reserve statements and the effect of the metallurgical evaluation on ore reserve classifications are discussed.

Heavy media separation serves to upgrade mill feed and reduce unit operating costs, allowing ores to be mined which could other wise be uneconomic. At the Aberfoyle mine at Rossarden in north-east Tasmania, a simple heavy media operation using a converted Akins screw classifier as a separating vessel, removes barren quartz from mineralised material. At the Cleveland mine at Luina on the west coast of Tasmania a more complex ore mix requires a versatile operation combining hydro-dynamic and static separation equipment to provide an efficient beneficiation circuit. The two operations are briefly described with a background of basic heavy media separ- ation practice.

Consolidated Rutile Limited's (CRL) operations incorporate the exploration, mining, processing, marketing and distribution of mineral sands. This paper outlines the current scope of CRL operations in vegetated sand dunes on North Stradbroke Island (NSI), Queensland. Included are some specific comments relating to design and construction of high capacity dredges which float in artificial ponds and are an integral part of mining high dune ore reserves. Three floating cutter suction dredges with combined sand throughput capacity in excess of 7000 tph are used in mining operations on NSI. Initial processing is by gravity and magnetic methods on large wet concentrators also floating in the artificial ponds. Spiral sluices are used exclusively in the newest concentrator, which has the highest recovery of heavy minerals.
