The extension of theoretical and laboratory studies of the roasting of tantalite and cassiterite concentrates from Greenbushes Tin Limited to pilot and semi- commercial plant developments is detailed. A rotary pilot furnace was used to prove the feasibility of the process and a semi- commercial plant was constructed at Greenbushes to produce large quantities of roasted calcine. The additions and conditions of the laboratory study were employed to achieve marketable grades of calcine from the two materials. As well as producing calcines with less than 0.1% Sb, most of the tin in tantalite was recoverable to a separate fume product. Tin fumed during cassiterite roasting on a semi-commerical scale amounted to less than 1% of the tin in feed.

Regolith, the blanket of bedrock weathering products and surficial sediments, covers almost all of the landsurface. In Australia extensive areas are covered by regolith up to several hundred metres thick which is relatively old (extending back to the Mesozoic or possibly earlier) and largely complex. As such, it is poorly understood and is presently regarded as a significant hindrance to resources exploration. The regolith: obscures bedrock lithology and structure blankets ore deposits in the bedrock hosts surficial mineral deposits ranging from placers (gold, diamonds, platinum, mineral sands ....) to chemical precipitates (uranium, opal, gold, bauxite....). contains important groundwater resources. The application of surface exploration techniques without recognition or understanding of the regolith could result in wasteful expenditure. The understanding of the distribution and characteristics of the regolith in the context of its evolution and geomorphic history and its relationship to underlying bedrock will promote development of suitable geological, geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing techniques. It also will assist exploration industry with the interpretion of data from: geological mapping soil geochemical surveys stream sediment geochemical surveys airborne remote sensing airborne radiometric surveys other airborne geophysical surveys some ground geophysical surveys shallow drilling and so improve mineral exploration Strategies.

In recent times, with the global mining industry’s focus on sustainable development there has been a significant focus on mine closure and rehabilitation performance and reporting through the development of the International Council on Mining Metals (ICMM), the Global Reporting Initiative and the Equator Principles. In addition, financial reporting obligations under International Financial Reporting Standards and the Sarbanes Oxley Act (2002) have also led to better understanding and improvements with industry closure performance, liability management and reporting.Under these sustainable development principles and financial reporting obligations, mining companies are required to consider mine closure planning and associated cost estimates across all life cycle phases of the mine. Internal processes have been developed within mining companies to better understand their closure liabilities and obligations and likely costs and cost estimating processes are generally developed for long-term life-of-mine (asset) planning and budgeting, financial reporting for corporate balance sheet provisioning purposes, and regulator reporting for environmental bonding and financial assurances.These days mining companies need to plan for, prepare and actually mine for closure right from the start of a project. This means that their closure and rehabilitation liabilities throughout each stage of the mine life cycle phases must be understood, planned for, managed and controlled.So how is the industry performing? Understanding of closure liabilities is improving and reflected in liability cost estimations that are recognising the likely issues to be faced at closure, but there is a way to go to ensure that the industry doesn’t add to the increasing legacy liabilities being passed onto the wider community.CITATION:Slight, M and Lacy, H, 2016. The Australian Centre for Minesite Rehabilitation Research (ACMRR) was established through a mining industry initiative to meet the need of industry, governments and the community for sustainable systems for land affected by exploration, mining and mineral processing activities. The Centre, which is a consortium of the major groups associated with mining rehabilitation research in Australia, has a focus on both strategic research and technology transfer and combines a wide range of multidisciplinary skills covering engineering and the physical and biological sciences. The paper briefly describes the goals, structure, expertise and research and technology transfer activities of the Centre. The major research program areas of waste rock dump and final void stability, acid mine drainage, tailings disposal, and remediation of ecosystem reconstruction are described in the context of national Priorities.

The San JosT district in Patagonia comprises a number of epithermal precious metal quartz veins hosted by a Mesozoic volcanic sequence. New radiometric data indicates that upper Jurassic volcanism was closely followed by vein mineralisation in the lower Cretaceous. A structural model is discussed for the district at times of mineralization that may also apply on a regional scale and other mineralised districts in Patagonia. The Kyaukpahto gold deposit is located at latitude 23¦ 47Æ 55" N and longitude 95¦ 56Æ 35" E in the Kawlin-Wuntho district, Sagaing Division, Myanmar. Gold mineralisation is hosted in sandstone of the Male Formation (Eocene) and occurs as stockworks and disseminations. The high-grade gold mineralisation is locally concentrated in a breccia zone. The gold deposit is closely associated with a NNE-SSW trending fracture system that forms tensional open fractures. These tensional zones are thought to be directly related to the Sagiang transfer fault system that experienced several hundred kilometres of northward dextral movement during the post-Upper Miocene. Major sulfide minerals are pyrite and arsenopyrite with minor galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Gold mineralisation is associated with intense silicification, sericitisation and argillic alteration. Primary Type I fluid inclusions in the quartz from the mineralised zone are 5 to 15 ¦m across and yield homogenisation temperatures of 239¦ - 310¦C and salinities of 1.2 - 10.9 wt per cent NaCl equivalent. Laser Raman spectroscopic analysis indicates the presence of CO2 and CH4 in Type II fluid inclusions. Sulfur isotope analysis of disseminated pyrite in the ore zone by the laser ablation method indicates d34S values from -5.48ë to +5.53ë. The geology, alteration, ore mineralogy, fluid inclusion microthermometry and sulfur isotope data of the Kyaukpahto deposit are consistent with an epithermal ore deposit model for the deposit. However, the presence of CO2-liquid bearing fluids and the detectable CH4 in the gaseous phase of the fluid inclusions conflict with a typical epithermal origin for the Kyaukpahto deposit. The host siltstone and mudstone sequence, trace element geochemistry, and the disseminated nature of sulfide and gold mineralisation are also common characteristics of a sedimentary rock-hosted gold deposit, and these features may indicate a Carlin-like affinity. The following is a discussion of a new approach to safety when developing or applying a new mining technology. In the form of an engineering process, the following approach had its inception in the military and aviation industries and is also very strongly evident in the chemical industry.The process has been developed and applied in the mining industry by the author. It is called 'Incremental Development and Management of New Technology'.The process is a composite of carefully selected System Safety Management, System Engineering and Financial techniques and methods. It consists of modules which can be modified to suit the requirements of a specific project. Modules provide an organised framework of activities to facilitate a gradual acquisition of pertinent knowledge and information and to enable progressive evaluation or verification of produced outcomes against specified requirements.

In the sixteenth century the Spanish Captain da Alvaro Soavedaro, on a search for the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, came across the main island of New Guinea which he named Isla del Oro (Island of Gold). Since that time exploration for, and mining of, gold has been pursued by many, culminating in . the development of major world-class projects in the latter part of the 20th century. Though various prospectors have panned for gold and small gold mining projects were undertaken through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it was not until the 1880's when mining became a more concerted economic venture. Misima and Woodlark Islands in Milne Bay, Gura-Ackera and Yoada in Oro, and Lakekamu in Gulf Province and Keveri in Central Province were all gold producers by late nineteenth century. It was in the 1920's that corporations began mining in PNG and with the commencement of production at Panguna in Bougainville in 1972 a new era of mega-project mining began.' Today there are two large mining projects producing mainly gold and copper. The first, already mentioned, is Panguna on Bougainville Island. This project has provided Government with $US 475 million in taxes. ok Tedi is the second large mine development located in Western Province. It began production in 1984 with the extraction of the deposit's "gold Cap".

EnergyAustralia is a state-owned corporation in the state of New South Wales, whose responsibility includes ownership and management of an electricity distribution network. Expansion of the high voltage distribution network in the Sydney central business district (CBD) includes the requirement to run an additional five 132 kV feeders over 1.7 km from south of the CBD to a new 132 kV substation in the northern section of the CBD. A driven tunnel is currently being excavated in Sydney sandstone beneath Darling Harbour to contain the new 132 kV feeders. Tunnel construction methods involve both roadheader and tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation. This paper describes the design development of the cable tunnel, discusses the use of a geotechnical baseline report as an integral part of the contract documentation and provides an update of the current construction works.

Despite significant investment in safety in the mining industry (mostly focused on processes and systems), many companies are unable to sustain and further improve their performance resulting in continued workplace incidents. The problem persists despite the best efforts of companies and allocation of resources to achieve Zero Harm. A DSS survey in 2019 found that two out of five companies that cannot manage risks and face disaster, leave the market within five years. All safety/risk management systems have the common steps of risk identification, prioritisation, design of controls consistent with risk tolerance, and verification of implementation/operability of controls. This is then complimented with improvement to one or more of the above elements through learnings obtained from incident investigations. In principle, the above process should work to reduce risks to, and keeping them at, a risk level consistent with risk tolerance in the organisation.

The emerging discipline of ‘geometallurgy’ is not new but is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity. Geometallurgy involves a quantified and spatially constrained approach to ore characterisation in terms of relationships to critical processing performance behaviours. A key outcome is enhanced economic optimisation of mining and improved risk management tools.Industry recognition of the need for large-scale, integrated research to support this emerging area resulted in commencement of a major ongoing initiative in mid-2005. The AMIRA International P843 ‘GeMIII’ project (Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling) is a cross-discipline collaboration involving a number of world-class research organisations supported by over 20 industry sponsors.The project is delivering integrated tools and methods which link intrinsic rock characteristics to prediction of mineral processing performance. These indices must be capable of spatial distribution in 3D resource models and incorporation into mine planning and optimisation. A key aspect is provision of new cost-effective tools and methods which can provide the large numbers of measured and estimated data points required to undertake effective modelling and spatial distribution. The integrated methodology and enabling technologies being developed through the ongoing AMIRA GeMIII project are outlined, together with implications for supporting industry best practice.

Strong markets for metals and energy over the past five years have supported equity and debt market funding to enable a new group of mining juniors to emerge in control of economic resources, some in regions with high investment risk. Discovered in 1954 and mined since 1966, the X41 copper orebodies have produced over 143 Mt @ 3.3 per cent copper. By June 2002 the production from these orebodies had depleted the Mineral Resource to 36.6 Mt @ 2.8 per cent Cu (including 31.5 Mt @ 2.5 per cent Cu combined 2002 Ore Reserve). Mine production will ramp down to cessation beyond ten years. The 2002 Copper Business Study was commissioned to review the status of the Mount Isa copper business and to optimise the long-term strategy of the operations. The study resulted in a vastly improved geological and geostatistical model, and financial studies led to the optimisation of mine cut-off grades. Utilising these new models, a near-mine target generation workshop was conducted by the copper stream geology team. The workshop focussed on exploration for new ore sources and the extension of existing orebodies to supplement the Mineral Resource inventory for future conversion to Ore Reserves. Several prospective targets were identified and the Conceptual Northern 1100 Drilling program was subsequently designed. This paper shall discuss the practicalities of near-mine target generation in Mount Isa, the issues faced when locating and preparing drill sites in a mature mine environment, and the preliminary results of the drilling program so far.

Detailed cash flow forecasts have always been almost essential as a basis for judging the viability of proposed new mining projects. In recent years attempts have been made explicitly to take account, in such forecasts, of the uncertainties surrounding the assumptions upon which they are based. With the risk analysis approach, Monte Carlo simulation of the cash flows indicates in probability terms the combined effect of these uncertain basic assumptions. While the use of risk analysis has been widely discussed, few specific applications to real projects have been reported. The application of such an analysis in the feasibility study of the large new Deelkraal gold mine presently being established on the Far West Witwatersrand gold fields by the Gold Fields Group in South Africa is described in the paper. The paper also indicates how one of the major sources of uncertainty, namely the gold content of the ore, can be`quantified in objective probability terms. This feature distinguishes the application fran other published accounts in which only subjective probability assessments have been utilised.

Two tunnels are being bored using a æHydroshieldÆ in section 3.1 of the extension of the Underground railway line 5. At the end of the two tunnels, directly in front of the Hotel Adlon, the shields cannot be retrieved. The steel shell of the shield will be left in place within a sealed concrete block and the reusable components taken out through the completed tunnel. For the first time in Germany, an Underground tunnel is being lined solely by means of UNI rings. BerlinÆs Underground network is 165 km long and has 167 stations. Some 450 million passengers are transported annually. On account of the urban planning modifications that followed reunification, the network has to be adjusted, particularly in the city centre. The most significant project is the extension of the U5 from Alexanderplatz to the Lehrter Bahnhof. After completion, the U5 will be a continuous east-west traffic artery. It will provide a direct link with the new parliamentary and government district, open up new business districts and the cultural centre of the city.

Introduction The mine winder is an essential element in the mining of ore in deep level mines and therefore requires a high degree of reliability to avoid interruption of production. Failure of any component on a winder may also be dangerous and expensive to repair. The larger the failure the larger the stoppage. The failure of a winder drum is the ultimate catastrophe, not only because of the cost of replacement, but also because of the lead time in procuring a new drum. Today these types of failure are not as common but many failures have occurred in the past and even today many an old winder is con- sidered for a new and often more arduous duty. As far back as the turn of the century a lot of information had been gathered to try and clear up the complexities of the multi- layering effect of coiling rope under tension onto a drum. Before comparing results obtained by various researchers the nature of the pressure distribution between rope and drum due to multi-layering will be discussed briefly.

A column (50 cm 4) provided with a bell charging mechanism and a rectangular perspex insert was used to investigate the inter-relationship between charging pattern, size analysis and velocity profile for a number of charging methods. It is shown that a strong correspondence exists between size distribution and velocity profile for bell charged ore and coke and that decreased coke volumes cause higher pressure drops and increased central flow in beds with "V" shaped layers. It is also shown that a bell charged mixed burden exhibits greater segregation than when it is bell charged as layers and that when uniformly charged the mixed burden shows least segregation and a virtually flat velocity profile. A relationship is derived for "V" profile charges showing the extent of central segregation with furnace size.

Coal losses and dilution are among a coal mine operators everyday problems. These losses and unwelcome additions are generated primar- ily by the stripping operation and secondly by the coal mining opera- tion. Losses in yield due to preparation plant efficiency are a separate issue although they may be related to the coal mining operation. The losses and dilution can be traced to the following operations: (A) Overburden or Interburden Removal (1) Removal of coal edge by blasting operations. (2) Removal of top of seam by drilling/blasting. (3) Removal of top of seam by stripping equipment. (4) Removal of coal edges by stripping equipment. (5) Dilution due to stripping equipment. (B) Coal Mining (for the case where seams are ripped rather than shot) (1) Coal rib losses. (2) Coal rib dilution. (3) Coal left in floor. (4) Coal left in fault areas. (5) Floor material picked up whilst loading. (6) Spoil material picked up. (7) Spoil material from poor surface clean up. (8) Top of coal losses from final clean up. (9) Dilution from ripping too deep, i.e. into floor below seam. (10) Dilution from interseam parting. The losses apply to both the single seam and multi seam oper- ations although they are more pronounced in the multi seam mines than in a single seam mine due to the position of the coal which is lost. For example in the multi seam case the top seam coal edge loss is final. There is little chance of recovery with the subsequent pass even if the extra rehandle is done. However conversely the lower seam is relatively easy to locate as it has nowhere to go being contained by the lowwall bench.
