With a view to characterising activated carbons with respect to their ability to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions, an attempt was made to establish correlations between the equilibrium capacity constant of the activated carbon for gold (k value) and five other parameters. These parameters were percentage ash content, iodine number, methylene blue value, surface area, and pH respectively. Twenty four different proprietary brand activated carbon products were examined, the correlations being established by means of linear regression analysis. It was shown that a significant correlation only existed between k and pH value. This was interpreted in terms of the presence of oxide complexes on the activated carbon surface. Further test specifications as developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories are also outlined with a view to the selection of activated carbons suitable for use in' a carbon-in-pulp operation. Methods for assessing both the capacity and the kinetic response of carbons for gold adsorption are presented, while the measurement of attrition resistance, particle size distribution and moisture and solubles content is also outlined. The measurement of the capacity constant for gold adsorption together with attrition resistance are considered to be necessary in the initial selection of a suitable carbon.

Sinter plants currently have to use many types of ores with different properties due to the great demand for iron ores, which was driven by the massive growth in Chinese iron and steel industry. On the other hand, the development of iron ore mines is limited and the quality of iron ores is in a tendency of deterioration. Therefore, the quick evaluation of iron ores has become more important for a stable sintering operation. In addition to such a background, the CO2 gas emission should be decreased from sinter plants according to the Kyoto Protocol on reduction in greenhouse gases. The present paper first describes the methods for testing the metallurgical properties of iron ores, which use a small volume of sample mainly focusing on magnetite ore that is effective for reducing CO2 and NOx emissions from sinter plants. The sintering properties of ores are evaluated separately according to each stage in sintering process, that is: heating stage before melt formation, primary melt formation in adhering fines layer of pseudo-particles, and assimilation of nucleus ore particle with calcium-ferrite system melts.Next, the application of the tests to the blending ores is introduced showing examples of the studies on the effective usage of the magnetite ores with Marra Mamba type ores.

The high cost of sampling systems is largely due to the fact that indiv- idual mechanical type sampling units must be installed at the discharge end of ore/pulp pipelines, that is, at points where the pipeline discharges into pump sumps or the like. A considerable economic advantage may be obtained in the use of a samp- ling device that can be installed at any point in the path of the trans- porting pipe line. Initial tests on a vertical line with an injection sampler using iron ore concentrates reveal the validity of this type sample versus that taken with a mechanical sampler. A descrip- tion of the injection sampler shows its simplicity of installation, requir- ing minimum downtime on existing lines.

Drag pick roadheaders and continuous miners have been applied in the coal mining industry for several decades, having replaced drill-blast methods as the primary means of excavating coal and coal-measures strata. The generally harder rock types associated with metalliferous mining have precluded the use of such machines in the past, however, developments in machine technology and increasing labour costs and environmental constraints suggest that there are now likely to be applications suited to the method. Metalliferous mining engineers are generally unfamiliar with the machines themselves and with the fundamental criteria controlling rock cuttability. This paper gives an introduction to the machines and the controlling factors.

Bakelite is fairly widely known as a suitable material for the mounting of ore specimens, concentrates and tailings for microscopical study, but has not as yet had extensive application. It is the most suitable mount for specimens which are to be held in the mechanical holder of a polishing machine, based on that described by J. W. Vanderbilt*, which is installed in the Geological Department of the Melbourne University.Bakelite products are prepared by subjecting bakelite powder to a temperature of about 1600 C. under a pressure of approximately two tons per square inch for a period of four minutes. The shape and size of the products are governed by the use of suitably constructed dies. When the concentrate or tailing is mixed with the bakelite powder, a briquette is produced which can be polished so that the opaque minerals in the sample can be examined microscopically in the same way as in a piece of solid ore. Computer software is an integral part of mining operations today with many sites using six or more software packages on a daily basis. However, the use of these different programs generates the need for substantial staff training. The current trend toward large integrated packages to solve this problem is counter-productive because the relatively small companies producing specialised mining software do not have the resources to develop quality software with all the required features. Software standards are being proposed by various parties but recent history indicates these will be unsuccessful. An alternative approach is suggested using the various standards which have been developed for the Windows operating system.

Diamonds have been known in Australia for many years, especially in association with alluvial gold and tin occurrences. Exploration for primary sources in the Kimberely area of Western Australia has been carried out since 1968, culminating in the discovery, in 1979, of the Argyle Kimberlite No 1 (AK1) kimberlite pipe. Various techniques have been used in the search for diamonds such as geologic interpretation, aerial photography and Landsat, soil geochenical techniques, geophysics, and stream sediment sampling. Stream sediment sampling, a method developed in South Africa, using the detection of indicator minerals derived from kimberlites in gravel samples, has had wide application and success in Australia. Nevertheless, although Australian diamond bearing kimberlite and lamproite rocks contain some of the classic indicator minerals, their concentrations are generally much lower than in South Africa and Russia. Despite this paucity of indicators, stream sediment sampling is still the best known and most commonly used method of diamond prospecting in Australia. Small samples are treated by hand but larger samples require the use of diamond pans, jigs or heavy media separation plants. Each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages. The final concentrate is passed over a grease table or subjected to x-ray sorting.

Most of the existing models of the mechanisms of drilling and cutting processes are oversimplified in both stress state and failure criterion. On the other hand numerical modelling techniques are a more versatile method with great potential for development. In reviewing drillability and predicting performance of excavation machines the empirical tests, which simulate the physical breakage action in excavating processes are seen to be the best in terms of penetration rate predictability. Future methods of determination of drillability should concern the breakage characteristics and rock abrasivity involved in the two basic types of attack, i.e., percussive and rotary drilling.

The successful re-opening of the Cobar min- eral field was dependent upon the success- ful introduction of highly productive, low cost mining. Mechanised cut and fill stop- ing with incline access was selected for the C.S.A. mine because it permitted flexi- bility, complete primary extraction with no secondary pillar recovery, minimised dilu- tion and oxidation, a minimum of pre-pro- duction development and because diesel powered load-haul-dump (L.H.D.) units were proving reliable and highly productive in the U.S.A. Although L.H.D. vehicles are the key to the success of the mining method, four other main groups of vehicles are utilised in the mine - trucks, scaling vehicles, ser- vicing vehicles and specialist vehicles. The operating requirements at the C.S.A. mine are more stringent than those encount- ered in many other underground mining oper- ations. The first L.H.D. vehicle used at Cobar - the Transloader - had considerable difficulty in loading and discharging coarse production ore. The Wagner ST5 Scoop Tram performed this duty much better. However, the first generation Scoop Trams were not robust enough to withstand the heavy duty and many modifications were necessary before acceptable availabilities were obtained. Similar modifications were necessary for the Eimco 916 vehicle but the Eimco 915 unit came much closer to meeting the duty requirements. Eventually Cobar technical personnel design- ed a L.H.D. vehicle to meet specific C.S.A. mine conditions. These units have proven most satisfactory. Over 8 years of operation the underground vehicle fleet has become a proliferation of vehicle types. A standardisation pro- gram has been initiated based upon common prime movers being mated with "trailer" units to serve specific functions. Standardisation will reduce inventory levels and facilitate training of operating and maintenance personnel.

This paper outlines the rationale for the location of the crusher, geotechnical analysis and basis of ground support design, design and scheduling of the chamber and supporting excavations as well as the operational outcomes and lessons learned. Contributions from mining operations, planning, geotechnical and infrastructure teams enabled the Crusher Station One excavation to be completed on schedule, with opportunities taken for underground mining and infrastructure to work safely in parallel to deliver crusher station infrastructure on schedule. Installation of crusher infrastructure was ongoing at the time of writing.

PT Newmont Minahasa Raya (PT NMR) is an Indonesian joint venture subsidiary of the Newmont Gold Company of Denver, Colorado, USA. PT Newmont Minahasa Raya operates a 700 000 tonne per annum gold plant in the Minahasa region of North Sulawesi, Indonesia. At full capacity the plant is expected to produce an average of 150 000 to 180 000 ounces of gold per year until the year 2007 based on current existing reserves.Exploration began in 1986 and high grade mineralisation was discovered in 1988. Subsequent drilling defined a resource of approximately 2000 000' ounces. Reserves as of 1 January 1997 were 7 035 000 tonnes grading 8.46 grams per tonne, for 1 913 000 contained ounces. Metallurgical testwork commenced in 1991. Construction of the plant started in late-1994 and the first gold was poured in March 1996.

Since 1981 two single entry roadways have been driven at Ellalong Colliery for a total distance of 1 030 metres. They were driven at a height of 1.73 metres within the 3.7 metres thick Greta Seam using a Dosco In-Seam Miner (I.S.M.). Ventilation of the drivage was accomplish- ed by an exhausting fan in series with steel ducting and flexible ducting in the immediate face area. The air quantities provided at the face were more than adequate to comply with the requirements of -the auxiliary fan rules and the Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended. The experience gained in these drivages demonstrated that the ventilation of long single entry headings can be practically and safely achieved using existing equipment.

Polyurethane resin (PUR) is extensively used in almost all coal producing countries. On the local scene, PUR components suitable for underground application were selected and subsequently, trials were carried out at several coal mines. This paper describes the work at Pikes Gully Colliery (B.P.3Coal), where water flow rates of up to 4.5 m (1000 gallons) per minute, were reduced to 1-1.5 m /minute at the tirst stage of application. Subsequent trials were carried out at West Cliff Colliery (Kembla Coal and Coke). A variety of PUR chemical mixtures were tested in coal ribs and in the roof of intersections and roadways. The trial results are presented with all particular details. Using the PUR injection method, the roof, at the most difficult intersection, was stabilised and 'de-bonded' roof bolts were re-sealed. At Pikes Gully and West Cliff Collieries, 2 tonnes and 3 tonnes of PUR chemicals were injected, respectively. The technique, primarily based on German experience (Bergwerksverband), was used by Delta Control Systems Pty. Ltd. ACIRL was closely associated with the trials, which were monitored by installation of the measuring Stations.

Over the past decade, the mining industry has come to recognise the importance of water both to itself and to others. Water accounting is a formalisation of this importance that quantifies and communicates how water is used by individual sites and the industry as a whole. While there are a number of different accounting frameworks that could be used within the industry, the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs (MCA) water accounting framework (WAF) is an industry-led approach that provides a consistent representation of mine site water interactions regardless of their operational, social or environmental context that allows for valid comparisons between sites and companies.The WAF contains definitions of off-site water sources and destinations and on-site water use, a methodology for applying the definitions, and a set of metrics to measure site performance. The WAF is comprised of two models: the input-output model, which represents the interactions between sites and their surrounding community, and the operational model, which represents on-site water interactions.Members of the MCA have recently adopted the WAFÆs input-output model to report on their external water interactions in their Australian operations, with some adopting it on a global basis. To support this adoption, there is a need for companies to better understand how to implement the WAF in their own operations. Developing a water account is non-trivial, particularly for sites unfamiliar with the WAF or for sites with the need to represent unusual features. Rock Discontinuities ("joints") affect blasting results. An investigation was carried out to understand if blast parameter such as spacing needs to be altered with the change in joint direction. Small scale laboratory studies in jointed limestone blocks have been carried out. It is shown that optimum spacing is variable with the "joint" orientations. Evidence is presented from field studies in four limestone quarries supporting laboratory studies. Reasons for success and failure of widespacing technique is also provided. Only with suitable orientations of "joints: widespacing is successful.

The sequence of development and back analysis of the failure of a spoil pile in the 1B pit of the Moura Mine are given. The mode of failure was a two-wedge mechanism with a basal slip plane passing through a clay band about 2 m below the pit floor. Remedial actions for improving spoil pile stability are discussed.

Cable bolts are being used more extensively by the mining industry for many different rock reinforcement applications. The configuration of these bolts has evolved over the last 20 years to meet the immediate needs of industry at the particular time. Most improvements to date have focussed on increasing the mechanical performance with little attention given to issues such as ease of handling, matching response to that of the rock mass or corrosion protection. Ultrastrand has been designed and being developed with this broad perspective in mind so that it will satisfy the ground reinforcement needs of today's and tomorrow's mining industry.Laboratory tests on Ultrastrand prototypes have confirmed that mechanical performance is superior or equivalent to Standard and Birdcage Strand respectively. Preliminary discussions have been held with an installation equipment manufacturer with a view to conducting a trial at a mine site by early-1992.
