Tensile creep experiments were conducted on high-purity, poly cvystalline rhenium from 1500" to 2300°C at stresses from 1500 to I0,OOO psi in a vacuum of 10-a torr. The apparent activation energy for creep was 60 kcal per mole, and the steady-state creep rate varied directly with stress to the 3.4 power. Dislocation substructure that developed during creep was studied by transmission electron microscopy. Possible rate-controlling deformation mechanisms are discussed. The creep behavior of most metals at elevated temperature can be represented by the following equation:&apos;&apos;&apos; t = Cf(s)(^)(s/E)nD [1] where i = steady-state creep rate, C = constant, f(s) = a function involving microstructure, s = applied stress, E = the average elastic modulus at test temperature, n = constant, D = diffusion coefficient According to this well-established relationship, metals with higher elastic moduli and lower diffusion coefficients should have greater creep resistance at the same stress and temperature and equivalent mi-crostructures. While no diffusion data are available, the diffusivity of rhenium should be less than that for most other refractory metals because of its high melting point and hcp crystal structure. The Sherby-Simnad relation for calculating atomic mobility in metallic systems3 predicts that the diffusion coefficient for rhenium is less than that experimentally determined for tungsten4 in the temperature region 1500. to 2200°C. At these temperatures the elastic modulus for tungsten5 is only slightly larger than the extrapolated modulus for rhenium.6 Thus, rhenium is a good possibility for a a high-temperature structural material, but few data on the creep of rhenium have been reported. This investigation was undertaken to study the high-tempera-ture deformation behavior of rhenium in detail. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The material used in this study was consolidated from high-purity powder. After cold pressing the powder to a plate a in. thick, the billet was sintered in hydrogen at 2250°C for 24 hr. The plate was reduced to 0.100 in. by cold cross rolling with intermediate anneals at 1650°C for 20 min between passes. The plate was further reduced to 0.060 in. by unidirectional cold rolling with similar heat treatments between passes, and then finally stress-relieved in hydrogen at 1650°C for 30 min. Specimens tested at 1900°C and below were pretest-annealed at 1900°C for 2 50 hr. Specimens tested above 1900°C were pretest-annealed at 2400°C for 5 hr. The impurity content in the "as-received" plate was quite low, table I. Essentially no change in impurity levels was detected in specimens after creep testing. All creep tests and annealing treatments were conducted in a vacuum of 10-8 torr in a test furnace heated by a tungsten mesh element. The load was applied to the specimens through a bellows, and stresses were maintained to ±1 pct of the selected value by periodic corrections for changes in specimen cross-sectional area during creep and for changes in the bellows spring force due to load column extension. One-inch-diameter tungsten force rods were used in the hot zone of the furnace. Deformation at temperature was measured by optically tracking gage marks on the specimen. Temperature was measured by a calibrated optical pyrometer and was determined to ±5"C. Grain sizes were determined by the linear intercept method and specimens were examined in the "as-polished" condition, using polarized light. Specimens annealed at 1900°C had a grain size of 52 ± 5µ , and those annealed at 2400°C had a grain size of 148 * 11 µ. Pieces were cut from the gage section of creep-tested specimens and planed to a thickness of about 0.010 in. by spark discharge machining. Thin foils for viewing by transmission electron microscopy were obtained by electropolishing in a solution of 6:3:1 ethyl alcohol, perchloric acid, and butoxy ethanol, respectively, using the window technique. Bath temperature was —4OoC, and the cell potential was 35 v. The foils were examined in Siemens Elmiskop I, operating at 100 kv. THIS paper is a report on work undertaken to investigate the results and conclusions of Ravitz and Porter1,2. that galena freed of surface oxidation products and lead carbonate ("clean" galena) is water-repellent, and that the action of xanthates in flotation is the action of a cleansing agent, enabling oxidized galena particles to expose a pure lead sulphide, water-repellent surface. The apparatus, in construction and use, was essentially that of Ravitz and Porter. The only significant modification introduced by the present authors was the substitution of a three-necked flask for the flotation cell as the "reaction vessel." Our procedure was to place 50 grams of freshly ground, minus 200-mesh galena in the reaction vessel, sweep out all molecular oxygen from the system with oxygen-free nitrogen, and proceed to wash the galena surface free of its oxidation products with repeated small portions of (I) ammonium acetate (500 c.c. of water, 200 grams of ammonium acetate) or (2) ammonium chloride, hydrochloric acid (2 liters containing 200 grams of ammonium chloride and 25 c.c. of 1.18 sp. gr. hydro chloric acid). The galena was next washed with many 100-c.c. portions of oxygen-free, distilled water. The galena was finally considered free of soluble salts when wash water that had been in contact with the mineral for at least 48 hr.* gave negative tests for: (I) lead ion with sulphide; (2) chloride with silver ion; (3) acetate with cuprous chloride, sodium chloride; and (4) ammonium ion with Nessler&apos;s reagent. Next 500 c.c. of potassium ethyl xanthate solution, free of dissolved oxygen, was run onto the "clean" galena particles. For this system there were determined: I. The wetting properties of the clean galena particles by shaking the reaction flask and noting the degree of mineral collection at the liquid-air interface. This was, of course, simply a qualitative test, but it proved adequate for our purpose. 2. The removal of xanthate ion from the potassium xanthate solution on being shaken with the "cleansed" mineral. Xanthate concentrations were determined by iodine titration according to the methods of Taylor and Knoll.3 3. The pH of the xanthate solution after having been shaken with the "cleansed" galena. The pH was determined colorimetrically.4 The results of five experiments of the type mentioned above are given in Table I.

PRECIPITATION of M23C6 carbides at grain boundaries in austenitic steels and nickel base superalloys has received considerable attention. Hatwell and Berghezan,1 in a study using carbon extraction replicas, observed that dendritic growth of the M23C6 carbide phase occurred at grain boundaries in austenitic steels. Merrick and Nicholson2 have observed that in thin foils of "Nimonic 75" alloy the precipitation of M23C6 carbide was discontinuous at grain boundaries. Lewis and Hattersley3 have suggested that the type of M23C6 precipitation observed in Ni-Cr austenites represented the early stages of discontinuous precipitation. In a more recent study, Singhal and Martin4 have concluded that grain boundary M23C6 precipitation involves the migration of an austenite grain boundary by a mechanism very similar to that proposed by Tu and Turnbull.5 Tu and Turnbull&apos;s suggestion essentially involves grain boundary migration under the driving force arising from the difference between the surface free energies of the opposite sides of the plate. Thus, Singhal and Martin&apos;s observation4 implies that the first stage of discontinuous precipitation has taken place and that the grain boundary has provided a diffusion short circuit for the sub-stitutional solute atoms (principally chromium) which assist the preferential growth of the M23C6 plate in contact with the grain boundary. However, no evidence of the characteristic cellular morphology typical of discontinuous precipitation was found in Singhal and Martin&apos;s studies. Presumably, this is due to the low volume fraction (i.e., low supersaturation of solute) of the precipitating carbide reported by Singhal and Martin.4 Recently, Raymond6 has studied precipitation of the M23C6 carbide in Incoloy alloy 825 and shown that the growth of this phase is perpendicular to grain boundaries at 1400°F and in the plane of the grain boundary at 1700°F. The former aging condition resulting in discontinuous or "cellular" precipitation. Raymond has suggested an explanation for this behavior based on the relative rates of chromium diffusion by volume and grain boundary diffusion at the two different aging temperatures. In the course of a recent investigation on precipitation behavior in several &apos; strengthened superalloys, precipitation of M23C6 carbide at grain boundaries was studied. Under conditions of a high degree of supersaturation, the M23C6 carbide precipitates in the discontinuous or cellular morphology in Waspalloy (Ni-18.51 Cr-2.0 Fe-3.53 Mo-1.16 Al-2.78 Ti-0.09 C). This note presents electron microscopy observations of this mode of precipitation and its effect on mechanical properties. Specimens of Waspalloy after "solution" heat treatment at 1950°F show essentially single phase matrix with a few residual particles of "primary" MC carbide. In normal commercial heat treatments, precipitation of Ni3(Al,Ti) ordered fcc r&apos; phase occurs throughout the matrix and M23C6 precipitates as globular particles at the grain boundaries. In these commercial heat treatments the degree of supersaturation during precipitation is low. However, if specimens of Waspalloy are quenched from the solution heat treatment temperature of 1950°F and then aged at an aging temperature where the degree of supersaturation is high, discontinuous precipitation of M23C6 occurs. The development of a new method of mineral separation was sponsored by the International Salt Company, which requested Battelle Institute to investigate means for improving the quality and appearance of rock salt from the Company&apos;s Detroit mine. Although developed specifically for removing impurities from rock salt, the general method may be applicable to other separation problems. The principal impurities in rock salt from the Detroit mine are dolomite and anhydrite which represent 2 to 5 pct of the weight of the mined salt. In the size range from 1/4 to M in. (the range of primary interest in this project) the impurities are only partially liberated from the halite in normal production. Further size reduction to improve the liberation of impurities is not practicable in view of the market requirements for the coarse grades of rock salt. Laboratory separations in heavy liquids showed that, to improve the quality and appearance of the rock salt substantially, it would be necessary to remove not only free gangue particles but also a large proportion of the locked-in particles. Because rock salt is an inexpensive commodity, a low-cost process was required. Gravity methods were, of course, considered. The heavy-liquid separations indicated that a split at an effective specific gravity of 2.2 to 2.3 would be required. (The specific gravity of pure halite is 2.16.) Heavy-media separation was investigated but had the disadvantages that it was necessary both to operate with saturated brine and to dry the cleaned salt, and that the cleaned salt was darkened by the magnetite medium. Air tabling was tried but did not give the desired separation. It soon became apparent that established methods would not provide a satisfactory solution and work was undertaken on the development of a new process to solve the problem. PROCESS DEVELOPMENT Preliminary Experiments: At the start of the investigation, an analysis of the problem indicated that the diathermacy of rock salt—that is, its ability to transmit radiant heat—might form the basis for an efficient separation process. Under this theory, the impurities might be selectively heated by radiant heat. The particles could then be fed over a belt coated with a heat-sensitive substance so that the warm impure particles would adhere preferentially to the coating. After the initial experiments, made by heating the rock salt with an infrared lamp and separating the product on small sheets of resin-coated rubber, proved encouraging, a small continuous separation unit was set up. This comprised 1) a simple heating unit consisting of a vibrating feeder covered with aluminum foil and an infrared lamp mounted above the feeder and 2) a separation belt 6 in. wide and 36 in. long. A sketch of the device is shown in Fig. 1. Results with this apparatus confirmed the fact that a good separation was possible. It was apparent, however, that a considerable amount of experimental work would be needed to develop the scheme to a practical and economical process. The Process: Basically, the process consists of two main steps: 1) selective heating by radiation and 2) separation of the heated particles on a heat-sensitive surface. Because neither of these steps had previously been utilized commercially in mineral processing, it was necessary to do basic research on both aspects. Factors studied in the investigation included type of heat source, design of heating unit, design of separation belt, selection of heat-sensitive coating, removal of heated particles from the belt, contact between particles and coating, and maintenance of the heat-sensitive surface. Part of the experimental work was carried out on a small-scale unit consisting of the 36x6 in. belt and auxiliary apparatus, and part on a larger unit. For simplicity, discussion of work on both of these units is grouped together. SELECTIVE HEATING Radiant-Heat Source: The essential requirements for a radiant-heat source were 1) that the radiant heat be in a wave length range which is effectively absorbed by the impurities but not absorbed appreciably by the rock salt and 2) that it be dependable, practical, and economical. Selection of a heat source of suitable wave length range was one of the first considerations. It is well known that pure halite is highly transparent to radiant energy in wave lengths from 0.3 to 13 microns. However, the available data on infrared transmission by dolomite and anhydrite, particularly in the range below two microns, were not complete enough to serve as a reliable basis for selection of a heat source. Although it may have been possible to obtain sufficient data on infrared transmission and absorption to enable one to select the best heat source, a more direct procedure was used. This consisted simply of exposing the crude rock salt to each of several types of radiant-heat source on the small continuous separation device. The heat sources investigated, approximate source temperature used, and calculated wave length of maximum radiation are tabulated in Table I. Of the two types of tungsten-filament lamps investigated, both the short wave length photoflood lamps and the longer wave length infrared lamps were satisfactory from the standpoint of selectivity

Studies were undertaken to investigate the effects of manganese content on the machinability and other Properties of a free machining martensitic stainless steel (AISI Type 416). Machinability was found to be significantly improved in steels of high manganese content, and a direct relationship was obtained between machinability and steel Mn:S ratio. As the manganese content of the steel increases, the sulfide Phase present changes from CrS to (FeMn)Cr2S4 to (MnFeCr)S, and finally to MnS. The average sulfide inclusion hardness decreases through the same range of increasing manganese content. The mechanism for machinability improvement is discussed in terms of a soft ductile sulfide affecting deformation in the secondary shear zone. Type 416 containing relatively high manganese for improved machinability shows good general properties. The effects of increasing manganese content on mechanical properties, cold formability, and corrosion resistance are described. THE addition of sulfur is commonly used to improve the machinability of stainless steels. However, little attention has been paid in the past to the composition and characteristics of the sulfur-containing phase or phases present in these resulfurized steels. Recent information on the properties of sulfide phases, and their role in metal cutting, suggests that variations in these phases could have critical effects on machin-ability, as well as important effects on formability and other properties such as corrosion resistance. Manganese, chromium, and iron are strong sulfide forming elements present in stainless steels! of these, manganese has the greatest sulfide forming tendency and iron the least.1"1 The manganese content of resul-furized 13 pct Cr steels, often about 0.5 pct, can be insufficient or only barely sufficient to combine with the sulfur that is present; thus, the precise level of manganese can strongly influence the nature of the sulfide phase. Sulfide phases which may be present in stainless steels have been reported to include CrS, a spinel-type sulfide, chromium-rich manganese sul-fide, and manganese Sulfide.5,6 Detailed phase relationships for the Fel3Cr-Mn-S system have been reported by the present investigators,7 and a portion of this work will be referred to subsequently in this paper. Recent work by Kiessling6 and Chao et a1.8 has shown that sulfide phases can display wide variations in hardness, and may undergo considerable plastic deformation under isostatic loading.9-12 Early theories of metal cutting attributed the influence of sulfur to a lubricating effect. It is now apparent that the influence of the nonmetallic inclusions and their properties on crack initiation, deformation in the shear zones, and boundary films must also be considered in relation to the machining process. This paper presents the results of studies conducted to relate machinability to the various sulfide phases which occur in stainless steels. This work has led to the development of alloys with improved machinability, and has generated information on the effects of inclusions on metal cutting processes. Effects of sulfide inclusions and steel composition on other important metallurgical properties are also discussed. MATERIALS For drill machinability and inclusion studies, 10 lb laboratory heats were melted in an air induction furnace. These heats were made with sulfur contents be tween 0.10 and 0.50 pct and manganese contents be tween 0.05 and 3.0 pct. Residual elements were added to the heats in amounts typical for commercial steels. The typical compositional range covered by the heats is shown below: C Mn P S Si Ni Cr Mo Cu N 0.10 0.05 0.007 (M0 0.40 0.40 13.0 0.20 0.10 0.03 3.0 0750 The laboratory ingots were forged in the temperature range of 1800" to 2100°F to 3/4-in. sq bars, and all bars tempered to a hardness aim of 200 Bhn prior to testing. Because of differences in composition and tempering response, the tempered bars showed some variation in hardness (175 to 275 Bhn) as well as variations in delta ferrite content (0 to 50 pct). Composition, hardness, and delta ferrite content were considered in the analysis of the machinability data. Additional tests involving tool-life evaluation and determination of other properties were conducted on materials from commercially melted and processed 15-ton electric furnace heats. TESTS AND PROCEDURES Machinability of the laboratory heats was evaluated in a drill test. In this test, 1/4-in. diam holes, 0.4 in. deep, were drilled alternately in a test bar and in a standard bar for a total of four holes in each. This sequence was repeated three times using a freshly sharpened drill each time. The average time required to drill a hole in the test bar was compared to that for the standard bar. The recrystallization behaviors of two extruded and cold-drawn experimental sintered aluminum powder alloys, containing 1.75 and 3.0 pct Al2O3 by weight, were compared with that of extruded and cold-drawn commercially pure alumirzum. The kinetics of recrystallization of the alloys are described semiquantitatively. For the alloy containing 1.75 pct A l203 the rates of nucleation and of growth were also semiquantitatively determined. THE most striking property of aluminum alloys strengthened by a dispersion of Al2O3, the so-called SAP alloys, is their stability at elevated temperatures. One of the manifestations of this stability is their resistance to recrystallization after they have been cold worked. Most of the commercial grades of either the Swiss SAP or of Alcoa&apos;s Aluminum Powder Metallurgy Products have not been recrys-tallized after cold working, even when they are heated for a long time at a temperature near the aluminum melting point. Lenel, however, observed that the dispersion strengthened aluminum alloys with a larger spacing between the oxide particles than that of most commercial grades would recrys-tallize.1 It appeared to be of interest to further investigate the mode and kinetics of recrystallization of these alloys, and to compare their recrystallization behavior with that of commercially pure aluminum. Because homogeneous deformation of these SAP alloys in tension did not provide sufficient cold work to induce recrystallization, they were cold worked by wire drawing; the nonuniformity of this deformation unavoidably complicated the interpretation of the recrystallization studies. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Extrusions—Two types of sintered aluminum powder extrusions were used in this study. One type, designated AT-400, was produced from Reynolds atomized aluminum powder consisting of spherical particles averaging 3µ in diam and containing 1.75 wt pct of Al2O3. This powder was very similar to the R3M powder from which extrusions were previously prepared with an average spacing of 0.9µ between oxide particles.2 The second type, designated MD 2100, was produced from Metals Disintegrating Co. flake powder containing 3.0 wt pct of Al2O3, with an average flake thickness of 0.8µ. The average spacing between oxide platelets in MD 2100 extru- sions was 0.45µ.2 Powder compacts of 3/4-in. diam were extruded at 1000°F into 0.097-in. diam (AT-400) and 0.093-in. diam (MD 2100) wires by methods previously described.3 In order to compare the recrystallization behavior of sintered aluminum powder extrusions with that of wrought commercially pure aluminum 3/4 in. rod stock of 1100 F aluminum was extruded at 1000°F into 0.102-in. diam wire. Wire Drawing—Tungsten carbide dies were used for the AT-400 and 1100 F alloys. They had an included angle of about 15 deg and reduced the wire area approximately 7 pct per pass. Steel dies with an included angle of 11 to 13 deg and an average reduction per pass of 10 pct were used for drawing the MD 2100 alloy, because drawing this alloy through the carbide dies produced overdrawing defects. Heat Treatment—The cold-drawn wires were cut into small samples, and the deformed ends were etched off. The samples were each wrapped tightly in a single layer of aluminum foil, and individually isothermally annealed in a lead bath. Metallography—The modes and kinetics of recrystallization were determined by metallography. Mounted and polished specimens were anodized in a solution of 1.8 pct HBF4;4 examination under polarized light clearly revealed their grain structures. The recrystallized grains were generally much larger than those of the unrecrystallized matrix, and could clearly be distinguished because they alternated between maximum and minimum light reflection when the microscope stage was rotated, while the unrecrystallized matrix had a comparatively homogeneous "salt and pepper" structure. The fractional recrystallized volumes of the dispersion hardened alloy wires were determined by cutting and weighing of recrystallized and total transverse areas on photomicrographs. The recrystallized grains in the 1100 F alloy were too small to be cut out individually; therefore a combination of cutting and lineal analysis was used in this case. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Modes of Recrystallization—The modes of recrystallization of the three alloys varied widely. DURING the last week in April, cards were sent out from New York to Institute members affiliated with the Mining, Geology, and Geophysics Div. The cards requested recipients to indicate their main technical interest, within the division, i.e., mining, or geology, or geophysics. The reason for the cards is simple. Within the Institute more than 8000 have expressed either primary or secondary interest in this division. However, there is no way to determine the technical association stimulating this interest.

In some experimental work conducted several years ago, it was noted that sulphur seemed to have a distinct influence on grain size of carbon steels. 111 order to check this observation, a series of S..A.E. 1040 steels was made with the normal composition held as nearly constant as possible. The steels were made with three sulphur levels, which were 0.012, 0.024 and 0.038 per cent sulphur, respectively. For each of the sulphur levels, steels were made with only silicon deoxidization and with aluminum additions of 0.1015, 0.025, 0.050 and 0.10 per cent. The melting medium was an acid-lined high-frequency induction furnace. These steels were forged and rolled and differentiall!. quenched from temperaturcs in the range of 1500O to 1800°F. After this, the A.S.T.M. grain size was determined and plotted as in Fig. I. It will be noted, first of all, that the aluminum-free steels had filler grain size with higher sulphur when heated to 1500, but that this condition was reversed at 1700°. When aluminum was added to produce fine grain size, the steels in the lowest sulphur level were fine-grained only to 1600°. and then only with an addition of one pound of aluminum per ton. The medium sulphur steels werc fine-grained to 1600&apos; with a wider range of aluminum addition. The steels in the highest sulphur level were fine-grained at 1600° over a still wider range of aluminum additions and fine- grained at 1700° with an addition of one pound per ton. Fig. 2 shows curves of the grain-coarsening temperature for these steels and illustrates how sulphur and aluminum combine to give greater inhibition to grain growth than aluminum alone. Only the highest sulphur steels have a grain-coarsening temperaturc above 1700°.. At 1650°, the low sulphur steel is fine-grained only at its peak, while the highest sulphur steel is fine-grained over a wide range. In these tests, one pound of aluminum per ton gave the best results; this is equivalent to about 1 1/2 lb. per ton for commercial condition. IllcQuaid-Ehn tests made on these steels showed the same trend but to a lesser degree. The tests were repeated on a series of S.A.E:. 1015 steels with sulphur levels of 0.02 and 0.03j per cent. Aluminum additions were made in the range from 0.025 to 0.15 per cent. These steels were forged and rolled, normalized at 2000°F. to put them all in the same starting condition, then reheated to various temperatures from 1600" to 1800" and cooled at rates that would allow ferrite precipitation in the austenitic grain boundaries. The results of these tests arc shown in Fig. 3. It will be noted that. up to the temperature of 1650°, there is very little difference in the grain size obtained from the two levels of sulphur. .At temperatures of 1700° and 1750°, however, the lower sulphur steel was fine-grained only with an aluminum addition of 1 1/2 lb, per ton;

The recovery of over 80 pct of the vanadium values in titaniferous magnetite from Maclntyre Development,Tahawus, N. Y., was accomplished by an oxidizing roast with Na2O3-NaCI addition. Process description is given for leaching of roasted ore and precipitation of V2O5 and Cr2O8 from leach liquor. THE exploration and development of the Mac-Intyre orebody at Tahawus, N. Y., by the National Lead Co. provided a source of vanadium. Analyses of various composite sections of the drill cores of the MacIntyre orebody were made to establish whether or not the vanadium was constant throughout. Ten drill cores were sampled as 50 ft sections, crushed, and a portion magnetically concentrated. The head and concentrate were analyzed for total iron and vanadium. The results on the concentrates indicated that the vanadium is associated with the magnetite and maintains a close ratio to the iron content. The nominal ratio of 1:25:140 of V: TiO2:Fe was found to exist in the concentrates. Typical value for the vanadium in the magnetite both from laboratory concentration and mill production is 0.4 pct. The recovery of vanadium from the magnetite was investigated in 1942 to 1943. The research program encompassed both laboratory and pilot-plant work on sufficient scale to provide adequate data to establish the feasibility of a full scale plant. The recovery of vanadium from various ores has been reported in the literature and has been the subject of many patents. The literature dealing with recovery from titaniferous ore by roasting is quite limited. Roasting with alkaline sodium chloride, sodium chloride or alkaline earth chlorides, and sodium acid sulphate have been claimed in various processes as effective means.1-8 The reduction of the ore, followed by acid leaching, was another method proposed.&apos;-&apos; "he use of various pyrometallurgical processes for recovery of vanadium in the metal or in the slag has also been extensively investigated, but the results had little application to the problem."-" The separation of vanadium values from subsequent leach liquors and vanadium-bearing solution has been the subject of a considerable number of papers and patents. The most practical is by hydrolysis at a pH of 2 to 3 by acidifying a slightly alkaline solution. Data on solubility of V²O5 and V2O4 in water and in dilute sulphuric acid indicated a solubility of 10 g per liter in water.&apos;" Laboratory Results Magnetite Analysis: Adequate stock of magnetite was provided so that the laboratory and pilot-plant operation was on ore representative of the mill production. The ore was analyzed chemically and examined by petrographic methods to ascertain whether the vanadium was present in combined state or as an interstitial component between grain boundaries. No evidence was obtained which would indicate that the vanadium was in a free state as coulsonite.15 The analysis of the ore was as follows: Fe²O³, 47.4 pct; FeO, 29.1; TiO,, 10.1; V, 0.40; and Cr, 0.2. The screen analysis of the ore on the as-received basis was: -20 +30 mesh, 28.8 pct; —30 +40, 18.9; -40 +50, 9.7; -50 +60, 15.1; -60 4-100, 5.9; -100 + 200, 11.2; -200 +325, 3.7; and -325, 7.2. Roasting Conditions: The prior practice indicated that a chloridizing roast with or without an alkaline salt had been effective on other titaniferous magnetites. On this basis roasts with additions of sodium chloride, sodium carbonate and mixtures thereof were investigated varying the roasting temperature between 800" and 1100°C. Since the ore had shown no segregation or concentration of vanadium, the influence of particle size on the freeing of vanadium by the reagents during roasting was determined. The initial work was on silica trays in an electric resistance furnace with occasional rabbling of the charge. Subsequently, the roasting was carried out in a small Herreshoff furnace to establish the influence of products of combustion on the recovery of the vanadium. The laboratory tests showed that this ore required an alkaline chloridizing roast, in conjunction with a reduction in particle size to less than 200 mesh. When roasted in air at 900 °C with 5 pct NaCl and 10 pct Na2CO³, over 80 pct recovery of the vanadium was attained as a water-soluble salt. The presence of alkaline earth elements gave detrimental effects and care had to be exercised to avoid any contamination of the ore or roast product by such materials. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to present the results obtained by solving the fractional flow&apos; and frontal advance&apos; equations to obtain oil recovery at water breakthrough as a function of the length of the system being flooded, the linear velocity of injection and the displacing phase viscosity. The method of solution makes use of the stabilized zone concept first presented by Terwilliger, et al3 when calculating saturation distributions in a gravity drainage system. In order to check the calculated results, the equations and method of solution were applied to the system on which Rapoport and Leas&apos; reported experimental data. METHOD OF SOLUTION The solution of the fractional flow equation and the frontal advance equation is obtained by assuming that a water front forms to sweep the oil out ahead of it. There is ample evidence that under the proper conditions a water &apos;front does form. If this water front is not to dissipate, the water saturations which comprise it must have equal linear velocities. These water saturations are said to comprise the stabilized zone. Equation (2) indicates that for all these saturations and hence fw must plot as a straight line against saturation for those water saturations comprising the stabilized zone. The water saturations lying between the highest in the stabilized zone and the highest that can be achieved in the porous medium comprise the variable zone. Regardless of the numerical value of the length of the system, the variable zone must eventually span all of it, so that for long enough systems in Equation (1) will be small enough to be neglected. Hence, for the saturations in the variable zone Equation (1) can be simplified to In order to determine the composite fw function applicable to the entire range of saturations in the porous medium, it is necessary to find the water saturation which separates the stabilized zone from the variable zone. This dividing saturation must be on the curve defined by Equation (4), and a tangent curve at that point must pass through the initial water saturation to satisfy Equation (3). Hence, the valid fw curve is given by a straight line starting at the initial water saturation, tangent to the curve of Equation (4): and along the curve of Equation (4) from the point of tangency on. The point of tangency determines the water saturation dividing the zones. The length and shape of the stabilized zone can be found by solving Equation (1) for Integrating this expression numerically between any two saturations in the stabilized zone gives the distance separating these two saturations. By repeated integration, the saturation distribution of the stabilized zone can be determined. Petroleum Division, holds a commission as Lieutenant-Commander in the Naval Reserve and is attached to the office of Inspector of Naval Petroleum Reserves in California. During World War I he left his studies at Stanford University to join the Army and was granted a commission as Second Lieutenant of Infantry. He remained in the Army Reserve until 1938 when he resigned to accept a commission as a member of the Naval Petroleum Reserves Advisory Board. Born in San Francisco Jan. 29,1899, where his father had lived since 1880, he was in that city during the turbulent year of 1906 where the city was ravaged by fire and earthquake.

C. E. SIMS*—This is a most interesting and important paper. It is important from two standpoints. First, it has as-spects of being highly accurate and therefore extremely useful to the operating man in showing how far he can go in oxidizing carbon from a steel bath while retaining chromium and the effect of temperature on this limit. Fig 5 is undoubtedly the highlight of the paper, and in checking it against available data, it seems capable of predicting actual results. The other important aspect is the apparently significant fact that reactions within a steel bath, such as between carbon and an oxide, are homogeneous reactions which do not require equilibrium with an external phase. In this case, it seems obvious that the reaction and the equilibrium established were between dissolved carbon (or carbide) and dissolved CrO. The classic reaction which requires equilibrium with solid Cr2O3, did not fit the data. It was recognition of this principle that made Fig 5 possible. G. R. FITTERER*—It might be in assuming the CrO is dissolved in the metal that you are actually approaching the correct factor for activity. If that is true and if the percentages that were used represent an equilibrium constant, this would mean, in effect, that the minimum temperature at which chromium would be reduced by an equivalent percentage of carbon would be about 2400°F from your equation. I believe that is in line with my experience particularly if you deal only with low percentages. J. CHIPMAN†—The author in discussing the equilibrium of the reaction offers two choices of explanation. One postulates an effect of chromium on the activity coefficient of carbon; it would require perhaps more data than are available to us at the present time to test this thoroughly. The other postulate which he offers is a reaction with CrO. This explanation is consistent with physical and chemical principles provided that a solid phase CrO is present, and that is essentially what he is postulating. If that oxide were present one would expect and, I think, almost require the kind of results that he obtained. The weakness of that postulate lies in the lack of confirmatory evidence regarding the presence of solid CrO as such. This should offer an interesting subject for further study. It seems a pity that the theoretical arguments revolving around CrO should have obscured for a moment the very real excellence of this paper. E. CARTER*—I think there is a problem that presents itself in practical application where the metal temperature is from 3200 to 3300 and the temperature desired in pouring is considerably less. B. M. LARSEN†—I get the impression from some of the work that was done earlier that there is probably a localized zone of high temperature at the slag metal interface which effects the removal of the carbon. Without that I wonder if the effect is possible to have a localized superheat and an equilibrium there favorable to low carbon content and

DURING the past summer the writer was asked by the Illinois State Geological Survey to make a study of some of its economic geological problems with regard to the applicability of geophysical methods of prospecting to their solution. The following four problems were sug-gested for investigation: (1) the fluorspar area of Southern Illinois, (2) oil structures in the south central part of the state, (3) the lead and zinc-bearing area of northwestern Illinois, and (4) the water supply and gravel deposits of the glacial drift. The prime requirements were to find a means of obtaining a maximum of useful information with a fairly modest outlay of expenditure for technical staff and equipment. The method of procedure adopted was that of making a preliminary study of each of the problems named by means of available office data and published reports with supplementary field reconnaissance where necessary.

IN recent years various problems in connection with research work on the preparation and properties of zinc-base alloys have required reliable information concerning the constitution of the zinc-rich portion of the iron-zinc equilibrium diagram. On numerous occasions rather positive indications were obtained that, for example, the solubility of iron in zinc was incorrectly represented on .the current equilibrium diagrams.. A careful study of all the available literature relating to the iron-zinc system led to the conclusion that much of the early work was unsatisfactory as measured by present standards of experimental accuracy, and as a result it was decided to redetermine the location of the liquidus curve and of adjacent portions of the diagram. Part I. of this paper comprises a description of the experimental methods and a summary of the results by means of which the zinc-rich end of the iron-zinc diagram has been revised in the following ways: 1. Measurements of the solubility of iron in liquid zinc by several different sampling methods, leading to a relocation of the liquidus curve. 2. Microscopic, conductivity, and X-ray studies of the solid solubility of iron in zinc, which, together with thermal analyses, have resulted in new values for the solid solubility and the eutectic temperature and composition. 3. Heating and cooling curves, obtained by a refined differential method, leading to new locations for the two peritectic horizontals. In Part II of the paper the attempt is made to review all of the published work having a bearing on the constitution of the iron-zinc system, and to correlate the present results, and some recently published data

In a recent paper,1 the solid-solution strengthening of tungsten and tantalum in a portion of the W-T;-MO-C~ alloy system was described. Additions of tantalum and columbium to tungsten led to significant strengthening, and the introduction of dispersions into these alloys was suggested as a means of further increasing strength. Dispersion strengthening of columbium and molybdenum alloys has been studied extensively.2-4 The approach used to dispersion-strengthen molybdenum alloys appeared equally suitable for tungsten alloys, and, therefore, a brief study was undertaken to determine to what extent the introduction of carbide dispersions would strengthen a solid-solution tungsten-base alloy. A base composition of tungsten and 10 to 12 pet Cb was selected; previous work1 had shown that the tensile strength of this solid-solution alloy was 50,000 psi at 3000°F. In the course of a study concerned with structural stability of precipitation hardening nickel base super -alloys after exposures to elevated temperatures, some interesting effects of hydrostatic pressure treatment on Rene were observed. The evidence presented below suggests that hydrostatic pressure treatment of the solution heat-treated alloy can affect the dispersion of the y&apos; (Ni3Al) phase upon subsequent precipitation heat treatment and long time aging. Rene 41 alloy has the following nominal weight percent composition: Al B C Co Cr Fe Mn Mo Ti Ni 1.4 0.006 0.7 11.3 19.2 1.0 0.05 9.4 3.3 balance The effect of successive pressure, precipitation heat treatment, and long time aging on the microstructure of this alloy was determined by subjecting a number of alloy buttons to five different thermopressure treatments. Pressure and precipitation heat-treatment parameters are listed in Table I. Fig. 1 shows y&apos; morphology* of specimens in groups I and 11. Three years ago, when Sun Energy Development Co. (Sunedo) dedicated its Cordero mine in Wyoming, the company noted that its decision to venture into the coal industry was prompted by the need for domestic energy self-sufficiency. Now, as the energy situation assumes crisis proportions and the cry For coal intensifies, Sunedoo has begun a $21 million expansion program that will double the mine&apos;s productive capacity by the mid-1980s. When the Cordero come was originally conceived, Sunedoo obtained permission from permitting authorities to produce up to 11 million t/y (12 million stpy) of coal. But seeing opportunities in the coal market, Sunedoo returned to the agencies in 1976 and came away with permission to produce 22 million t/y (24 million stpy). Of that total permitted capacity, Cordero is expected to produce about 3.6 million tons (4 million st) this year.

H. A. MEGRAW, New York, N.,Y.-One interesting thing that might be brought out in this connection is the cost of making sulphide gas. I had a communication the other day which suggested that, in view of the high cost of oil, sulphur and sodium sulphide, we might make use of a well-known chemical reaction to form this sulphide gas by the use of aluminum sulphide. It is difficult to see any advantage in this, however, since aluminum has been affected just as much as any other commodity by the rise in prices, due, to war conditions. RUDOLF GAHL, Miami, Ariz. (communication td the Secretary*) Mr. Callow refers to my paper, History of Flotation at Inspiration, which was presented at the Arizona meeting of the Institute. These notes of Mr. Callow&apos;s contain much valuable information on flotation practice, as is to be expected from an article written by an author of Mr. Callow&apos;s experience in this branch of metallurgy. Nevertheless, I cannot help contradicting a number of the statements made in the references to my paper. In passing, I will also say a word about the reference in Mr. Callow&apos;s paper to the article by Messrs. Laist and Wiggin entitled "Flotation Concentration at Anaconda, Mont." Mr. Callow calls attention to the fact that evidently Callow flotation machines are not very sensitive, inasmuch as one man per shift handles four 800-ton sections of Callow machines or 3,200 tons per day at the Inspiration plant. While-it has been the experience of the Inspiration company that the four sections of Callow machines in the Inspiration concentrator are easily handled by one American operator per shift, it is only fair to state that each man operating four sections is assisted by two Mexican helpers who constantly clean the bottoms of the machines. The tonnage per section, by the way, whether equipped with Callow,, Inspiration or Minerals Separation machines, is considerably in excess 4 800 tons.. Mr. Callow further says that local opinion at Inspiration is that, two 800-ton sections consisting of two 10-compartment and four 6-compartment Minerals Separation machines (these machines are of the Hebbard type) is the limit that one man can properly attend. I do not hesitate to say that I consider it perfectly feasible to have four such sections operated by one man, perhaps assisted by "one helper. The Minerals Separation machines of this type have undoubtedly an advantage as far as easiness of operation is concerned,

GENTLEMEN: I am going to call upon your organization for some teamwork. The time has come for Americans everywhere to put themselves solidly behind American ships. Our railroads must no longer stop at the ocean. We are building an American merchant fleet of twenty-five million tons-three thousand ships. We are backing modern ships with modern port facilities, establishing our bunkering stations all over the globe and will operate with American railroad efficiency. We will carry American cargoes at rates corresponding to our railroad rates-the cheapest in the world. Fast American passenger-and-cargo liners will run regularly to every port in Latin America, the Orient, Africa, Australia. Are you taking steps to use these ships to increase your own prosperity? Do you realize that American products of factory, farm and mine can be delivered to customers in foreign countries on terms which will build lasting trade? Do you realize the possibilities for bringing hack raw materials to extend your products and trade? We must all take off our coats and work to bring these American ships home to the people of every American interest and community. The manufacturer must think of customers in Latin America as being as accessible as those in the next state. The farmer must visualize ships carrying his wheat, cotton, breeding animals, dairy products and fruit to new world markets. The American boy must think of ships and foreign countries when he chooses a calling.
