During the war years of 1941 to 1945, maintenance of mine locomotives and other mine equipment took the form of rebuilding rather than of renewing. Purchase of new parts became increasingly difficult and mine operators found it necessary to maintain equipment by salvaging old parts. Mine-locomotive wheels, although not representing a high cost per pound of material, contain a considerable amount of steel and without rebuilding would have to be scrapped long before even a moderate percentage of the steel in the wheel is actually consumed. Many mine operators have been rebuilding locomotive wheels for several years with automatic open are-welding equipment. In 1927, the Pittsburgh Coal Co. started such a program, using a single Westinghouse automatic welding head. Since that time, many refinements have been added, until in 1944 the setup was operating very efficiently. A desire to increase wheel life and to hold down rising costs led the company in 1944 to investigate the possibilities of the under-flux are-welding process for wheel rebuilding, although at that time, little or no work had been done on multiple pass or "build-up" welding with the underflux arc. Work with this process had been confined largely to welding together flat plates in a "down hand" position. Possibilities for savings were intensified by the fact that the company has 300 locomotives in operation, using actively or as spares 1200 sets of wheels. During 1942 and 1943, about 500 sets of wheels were sent each year to the company's maintenance shop at Library, Pa., for rebuilding. Based on having 800 sets in service (many of the company's heavy locomotives have three sets of trucks), the average life of a set of wheels was approximately 19 months. Anything that could be done to increase wheel life promised sizable annual savings. Open Arc Welding With the open arc process, a set of wheels could be rebuilt for about 40 pet of the cost' of new wheels. Underflux arc welding gave promise of greatly increased welding speeds, more homogeneous, dense deposits and the chance for use of a wider range in welding-wire compositions. Against this was ranged the higher cost of materials and the cost of developing the process from the theory to a practical reality. Since 1927, when a single open arc head was placed in operation, fixed welding procedures had been gradually developed, a positioner for handling a set of wheels was built, and a second head was placed in operation in order to weld two wheels simultaneously. The fixture, or positioner, which was built to position and turn the wheels under the two welding heads, included a motor drive, controlled by a rheostat, which rotated the wheels through a double set of speed reducers and a removable jaw coupling attached to one end of the axle of the wheel truck.

' In recent years the metallurgical field of the copper industry has expanded greatly, the copper ores have become lean add diverse in charactcr, and we are obliged to treat such ores on a very large scale. On the commercial side, the operating and consulting staffs of the great mining companies have been enlarged and organized, and no great capital expenditure is decided upon until it has been investigated and recommended by a highly organized force of specialists as a committee. I believe that in the scientific field and in the most valuable proceedings of our -various societies the old idea of one-man point of view and one-man treatment of principle and detail together has been splendidly developed and should continue, but for the advancement of our art we should deliberately discuss subjects among ourselves in order to do away with the idiosyncrasies of the individual and to gain a composite view reprcscnting the best thoughts of many men. In the development of new ideas leading to the introduction of new methods, the societies could enlarge their present great field of usefulness if such discussion be had, and in my opinion further great good could be done if a number of men of different qualifications and experience would join in preparing a joint book, each dealing with his particular problem, but consulting the other men. In this way individualism would be preserved and various processes would be described, and if properly reviewed the paper would be palpably capable of analysis, and the student would have at his command the associated efforts of a group of qualified engineers. I have neither the time nor the qualifications to make an investigation and study in detail of hydro-metallurgical processes, but for some years I have foreseen the development of such processes, and I have a deep interest in the subject and have given some of its phases careful consideration from a long-distance viewpoint. I have assisted in directing many experiments and in reviewing the merits of many processes, and am glad to make some introductory remarks with the understanding that other gentlemen present will freely and candidly enter into the discussion and help to fill out the few bare bones that I can uncover.

IT is a somewhat curious circumstance that the newest of the Institute's several awards should be conferred in the oldest of our several professional fields—for there is little question that geology and mining have antedated metallurgy and petroleum. Perhaps so did geophysics. After all, one geophysical instrument, the magnetic compass, has been successfully employed for many centuries. Young in years the Jackling Award may be, but in distinction—whether in terms of the title it bears or in terms of the first three medalists (Reno Sales, E. D. Gardner, and the late Father MaceIwane)—the Jackling Award is already one of the ranking awards of the Institute. The name of the 1957 medalist will bring added luster to an already illustrious roll. J. L. Gillson was born and brought up in Evan-ston, Ill., in an area characterized by singularly flat and uninspiring topography, and devoid of ore deposits and even of bedrock—a most unlikely environment from which to expect a future Jackling medalist to emerge! On graduating from high school he enrolled as a chemistry major at Northwestern University. At the end of his frkshman year his scholastic prowess had won him a prize of two chemistry books. But these went unread, for about this time he came under the spell of U. S. Grant, that distinguished and enthusiastic geologist who for many years was head of Northwestern's geology department. From thence forward Joe was a dedicated geologist. After a Navy interlude in World War I, he went to MIT for graduate work, substituted for the late Professor Palache for one year at Harvard in mineralogy, received his doctorate at MIT and stayed on as a meniber of the MIT faculty, where the geology department was headed by that great dean of all economic geologists, Waldemar Lindgren. In 1926 Joe spent a summer looking into barite deposits for the du Pont Co., and since 1928 he has been du Pont's chief geologist. Do men who lead such active lives in our exploration organizations generally have permission to publish their observations? Do they generally find time to publish, even if they have permission? Alas, no. But in Joe Gillson's case, yes. His bibliography runs to well over two score papers, including one of the very first papers in this country on the applications of petrography to problems of Portland cement. He has written on such topics as the origin of talc and the genesis of ilmenite, fluorspar, and alkaline rocks. Each year for a number of years his annual reviews of industrial minerals in the Mining Congress Journal have been eagerly awaited. - Do men who do so much to advance their science have anything left to give to the advancement of their profession? In Joe Gillson's case, yes. He has been a vice president of the Mineralogical Society of America and has been active in the councils of the Society of Economic Geology, particularly in their research programs. This year he is president of the American Geological Institute, currently perhaps the most challenging post to which a geologist may be elected. His contributions to AIME scarcely need documentation, so I shall mention only three—his chairmanship of the Committee on Democratization of the Institute, a committee whose work and recommendations brought a new and hopeful leaven to AIME at a time when this was sorely needed; his chairmanship, a few years ago, of the Industrial Minerals Division; and his current place on the Board of Directors as Vice President of the Institute. Such' a catalogue of contributions and achievement, even as condensed as I have had to make it, certainly merits the Jackling Award. Yet, implicit although not often expressed in the conferring of most awards is the hope that besides recognizing a distinguished career, it will provide stimulus for further effort. In the present instance, such an expectation is already well on the way to fulfillment. Only recently Joe Gillson has undertaken the editorship of a new and greatly revised edition of the Institute's Seeley Mudd volume, Industrial Minerals and Rocks. And so, Mr. Chairman, it is with pleasure and enthusiasm that I present Dr. J. L. Gillson for the 1957 Jackling Award.

WITH the development of thin film techniques for the direct examination of metals in the electron microscope some new problems in quantitative metallography have become apparent. In order to obtain certain contrast effects in the electron optical image when examining thin films from alloys containing dispersed phases, it is essential to use films of a thickness at least two or three times greater than that of the mean particle diameter of the dispersed phase. From micrographs of such specimens it may be desired to obtain the volume fraction of the dispersed phase and the number of particles of the phase in a unit volume of the matrix. IN this survey of the progressive development of education for the mineral industries throughout the United States, the review of the history of each school has usually been completed wherever it is first mentioned, but the history of the schools in the cities of the eastern seaboard was not carried beyond 1870. It is necessary now to cover what happened during the period of approximately the last quarter of the nineteenth century in several of the schools in the east. PHILADELPHIA Of Philadelphia, it has been related in chapter 4 that the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania began offering a curriculum leading to the B.S. in mining in 1853; that the school did not prosper, and finally closed about 1890. The establishment of a Department of Mining, Arts, and Manufactures at the University of Pennsylvania in 1855-56 was also mentioned, but its history was not carried beyond 1860. In 1859 J. Peter Lesley was appointed professor of mining in the University of Pennsylvania. The son of a cabinetmaker, born in Philadelphia Sept. 17, 1819, he had taken his A.B. degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1838 and then secured a position on the Geological Survey of Pennsylvania under H. D. Rogers. When the Survey was discontinued, in 1841, he went to Princeton to study theology, was ordained a Presbyterian minister and followed that career until 1853, when the Pennsylvania Geological Survey was again started and he rejoined its staff. He published "A Manual of Coal and its Topography" in 1856, and studied at the École des Mines, Paris, in 1850-57. He published an 800-page "Iron Manufactures Guide" the year that he was appointed to the staff at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1863-64 a College of Agriculture, Mines, Arts and the Mechanic Arts was established, but it was not a separate school

THE phase diagram of the Ge-Te system was first investigated by Klemm and Frischmuth.' They arrived at the phase diagram shown in Fig. 1 indicating the presence of a peritectic phase boundary at the 50 at. pct Ge composition. Later, Schubert and Fricke2 obtained data which suggested to them the possible existence of a eutectic at about 55 at. pct Ge. In order to resolve these differences, we have carefully studied this system in the region 40 to 60 at. pct Ge using both the conventional thermal analysis technique and a new solidification technique.3y4 The alloys were prepared from semiconductor grade germanium and 99.999+ Te by reacting the elements in evacuated, graphite coated, vycor tubes. The samples were placed in a thermal analysis apparatus described elsewhere4 and cooling curves were taken of each alloy to determine the liquidus surface. It is now clearly evident that 1963 is witnessing a record year for prospecting and exploration in British Columbia and Yukon Territory, as substantiated by the following facts: ? About 60 large mining companies and many smaller ones are active in the search for new ore deposits. ? More than 500 prospectors and exploration geologists have been in the field this season. ? It is estimated that $10 million has been spent this year on the search for new ore deposits. ? Claim staking in B. C. to July 31, totalling 14,250, is up 2000 over 1962. ? Helicopter companies report a record total of 25 aircraft chartered to mining groups, with additional numbers used in oil-gas exploration. ? Leading assayers state that business with the industry is double that of the previous year. ? Diamond drillers report an increase of approximately 25% in the amount of contracts now on hand. The question is often asked, "Why is mining so active in Canada's Pacific Northwest?"

It has been known for many years that the efficiency of a water flood can be improved by lowering the water-oil mobility ratio in the system. Such a change leads to better sweep efficiency and also to more efficient oil displacement in the swept zone. Data from our laboratory water-flood tests of both small cores and long sand packs are presented which show that water mobility can be reduced and oil recovery increased by the addition of certain polymer solutions to flood water. The reduction in mobility, in many cases, is greater than would be expected from conventional viscosity measurements. These solutions, however, do not cause significant reductions in oil mobility. The over-all effect of these mobility changes is increased waterflood oil recovery. Encouraged by results of our laboratory work, we expanded our study to include pilot field tests of floods with such solutions. One such test, made in the West Cat Canyon field, Santa Barbara County, Calif., is described in detail in this paper. Three other field tests are also discussed. INTRODUCTION Oil production from most reservoirs following primary depletion and/or water flooding is often less than 50 per cent of the original oil in place. Heavy oil reservoirs seldom yield over 15 per cent of their original oil. With new reservoirs becoming harder to find, the improvement of oil recovery efficiency is one of our very important problems. We describe here some of our attempts to increase the efficiency of oil displacement by adding a water-soluble polymer, partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, to flood water. This technique will be termed "polymer solution flooding". The concept of using high-viscosity water to increase the efficiency of water flooding is not new. In 1944 Detling (Shell Development Co.) obtained a patent covering the use of several additives for viscous water flooding.' His objective was to improve water-oil mobility ratios by increasing the viscosity of the flood water. Other patents2-27 have been granted covering specific water-SO~LIble polymers or specific conditions of viscous water flooding. Barnes'" described his laboratory model study of the injection of a viscous water slug into a reservoir which had been partially invaded by bottom water. He concluded that, for this type of reservoir, "the cost of viscous water should not exceed a few cents per barrel for viscous water slug injection to be economically feasible" Our studies have led us to a somewhat different conclusion in a number of cases where hydrolyzed polyacrylamide solutions have been injected into reservoir models or actual reservoirs. Possible reasons for this difference are discussed in this paper. Our studies have shown that polymer solutions may lead to an increase in oil recovery over that from an ordinary water flood by (1) improving sweep efficiency, (2) improving microscopic displacement efficiency, or (3) a combination of these mechanisms. In the work of Barnes, only the benefit of improved sweep efficiency was considered. Also, our work has shown that there are marked differences in the effectiveness of different water-soluble polymers as flood water additives. Partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide is better than many other water-soluble polymers we have tested because, even in very low concentrations, it can lead to increased oil recovery. This is an important advantage when either a dilute polymer solution is injected continuously or a relatively concentrated slug is injected followed by water. In the latter case! portions of the slug become diluted and function in the formation as very dilute solutions. As dilution takes place the effective slug size will increase which, in turn, will reduce the cost per barrel of the effective flooding medium. The reason that partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide solutions are more efficient at low concentrations than certain other polymer solutions of equivalent viscosity (when measured in conventional viscometers) is not fully understood. We do know that the shapes and sizes of macro-molecules dissolved or suspended in liquids influence the flow properties of their solutions or suspensions. Solutions of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide cause greater reductions in water mobility than would be expected from conventional viscosity measurements. LABORATORY STUDIES Laboratory water floods were run in linear and radial systems with different water-soluble polymers and under varying conditions of flow. including reservoir conditions of temperature, pressure and fluid composition. Some of these runs are considered in this section. OIL DISPLACEMENT IN LINEAR MODELS In this group of runs the sweep efficiency approached 100 per cent because the linear sand packs used were as nearly uniform as possible. Results reflect primarily the micro-scopic displacement efficiencies. The laboratory models were unconsolidat-ed sand packs the lengths of which varied from about 4 in, to 40 ft. Further information on the flow models used is listed in Table 1. Using conventional procedures, water floods were run on sand packs containing either refined or crude oil at restored state. Frequently, a repeat run, similar to the first, was made as a check. Then a third run was made on the restored-state model using either polymer solution or a combination of polymer solution (slug) and water. Details of these runs are also reported in Table 1. Soon after the Waelz p1an.t for the fire concentration of low-grade zinc ores was put into operation in the early part of 1929 at Katowice, it was found that the conveyor equipment for transporting the hot residue from the furnace dust chambers was inadequate. Hand tramming with water cooling was used for a time, but that method was injurious to the workmen as well as costly. The problem was to find some practical mechanical means of conveying flue dust at temperatures of from 450" to 600°C. as it was drawn from the dust chambers. After considerable preliminary investigation it was decided to install pneumatic equipment for conveying the hot materials to a central mixing plant, where it would be mixed with slime and from which it would be returned to the furnace feed hoppers. The first pnenmatic equipment was installed in 1930, and has been in successful operation since that time. The pneumatic method of transportation has shown a considerable saving in operating costs over the former methods of dust handling and a decided improvement in working and hygienic conditions at the plant, through the elimination of the dust hazard. Additional pneumatic equipment mas installed in 1933 for conveying the furnace fume from the baghouses to the roaster plant. At the same time pick-up lines were provided for collecting the cleanings from the vertical and horizontal cooling pipes that are between the furnace dust chambers and the baghouses. The latter installation has practically eliminated a dusty and costly hand-tramming operation. A third extension was made to the pneumatic system in 1938 for conveying 'the zinc-lead-cadmium fume from the roaster-plant baghouses and flues to a new re-treatment plant for secondary products. The success of pneumatic conveying at the Waelz plant was the determining factor in the decision to install another pneumatic unit at the Saeger zinc-roasting and sintering plant. An unusually large number of crystals of magnetite obtained in the exploitation of a deposit of magnetic iron-ore of remarkable purity, encouraged the preparation of this paper, and its presentation at this time, that the matter might go on record in the Transactions. To make this record more complete, a preliminary statement is offered concerning the district and locality in which the ore is found. To the northeastern portion of the State of New York the United States is indebted for a large percentage of the iron-ore which has assisted in developing the resources and industries of the nation. As early as 1804, iron-ore was mined between Lake Champlain and the Adirondack mountains, and this district has since been an important and continuous contributor to our iron-ore supply. Many changes in equipment have had to be made to handle the flotation products at the blast furnace, and these changes have meant an expenditure of considerable money, which has not been compensated by an increase in smelting tonnage. To date, very few new lead mines have been developed, so that the help derived by the innovation of flotation has been directed to old producing properties, where the ratio of concentration is greater now than when gravity concentration was in effect. In some smelting plants there has been an abandonment of complete units due to the introduction of flotation. Flotation Products Difficult to Handle The physical characteristics of the flotation product do not make for economic handling for lead blast-furnace work, either mechanically or metallurgically. The millman or miner do not know what trials and tribulations they have passed on to the smelterman. To the smelterman it is "the everchanging flotation," for little does he know what new reagent will be perfected tomorrow that may completely change the grade and physical characteristics of the product. Even the mining companies who have complete units of mining, milling and smelting have had a hard time to reconcile themselves to the fact that the unit cost per ton of ore smelted must go up with the increase of flotation product on the blast-furnace charge. The "smelterman's burden," for that is what flotation has been for the last few years, has not caused the smelter operator to lag or fall down, but has spurred him on with new zeal. The physical properties of the flotation products are as follows: (1) High moisture content; (2) mucky nature of product; (3) fineness of product, and (4) high metal content. New Mechanical Devices for Handling Furnace Product These characteristics have caused the use of many new mechanical devices in smelting practice, for example: New transportation equipment, such as solid-bottom cars, is required; unloading equipment and sampling

YEAR 1951 has been bright for the mining geologist. He has arrived after struggling for a generation or two to sell his wares through service to the operator, the mine superintendent, and the manager. But as he establishes himself on the operating front, he is faced with even greater challenges; namely, the development of basic geologic principles governing ore-forming processes and the occurrence and distribution of mineral deposits. These principles are needed to guide his ever-widening search into new areas. He must now stimulate the interest, confidence, and imagination of the mining executive and layman in fostering the research essential to expand rapidly the basic science of geology and its more specific applications to the mining industry. The hallowed time-tested tools of the prospector and the industry are no longer adequate. New basic data, principles, and ideas are needed to guide industry's exploration. The entry of Government into exploration, by lending money to prospectors and operating companies to partly finance exploration, is one of the major events of the year. This was one of the activities for which the Defense Minerals Administration was established in the Department of the Interior. DMA was staffed largely with men from industry, but the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey have acted as its technical advisors and have provided its field staff. Since the start of this work in May 1951 to November 19, 1951, the DMA has approved 208 exploration projects while denying 318 others. The contracts involve about eleven million dollars worth of exploration, of which Government's share is about sixty percent. A few contractors have already made discoveries and are into production to repay their loans; others have completed their projects without making a discovery. In November, the DMA was split into two successor units. The Defense Minerals Exploration Administration was set up in the Interior Department to carry out the exploration program. The Defense Materials Procurement Agency was organized as a separate agency to carry out the other functions of the former DMA, as well as general strategic materials procurement. The strategic materials group of the Economic Cooperation Administration was transferred to DMPA in order to centralize the procurement from foreign sources into one agency, although the authority and scope of activities of this group have not been announced as of the middle of December. The DMA-DMEA-DMPA programs are making large demands upon the technical manpower of the Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines. It is still too early to evaluate with confidence the productiveness of this diversion so far as the immediate and long-range effects are concerned. Many of the individuals associated with these programs, as well as others in the industry, are convinced that from a long-range national viewpoint, the regular programs of both the Survey and the Bureau equal or even exceed in importance the current emergency mineral activities of these two agencies. Uranium Uranium continued to be the glamour-girl metal of the mineral industry, and at the request of the Atomic Energy Commission uranium and thorium were included in the DMA exploration program. Industry's intensive prospecting and mining activities in 1950 were further expanded early in 1951 when the Atomic Energy Commission announced an increased price schedule and a new bonus payment

Results of a field research project on the thermal recovery of oil by movement of a combustion front are presented. This field test was conducted in the South Belridge field, This The war paitern was a Southsing1e 2.5-acre five-spot pattern in the 700-ft deep Tulare sand. Results of this project indicate the technical feasibility of producing high viscosity, low-grallity crude oils by thermal means. It was demonstrated that heavy oils could be moved rapidly over considerable distances by thermal drive, and that high percentage recoveries of oil could be effected. The bulk of the oil recovery came after arrival of the burning front at a production well. However, rapid corrosion and high-temperature failure of conventional pipe and equipment both below and above surface occurred. Stainless steels gave more satisfectory performance under these conditions than did conventional steels. Oxygen was seldom observed in gas from wells ahead of the burning front, and it appears that the front was continuous throughout the life of the experiment. INTRODUCTION During late 1953 and early 1954, industry-wide attention was focused on the thermal recovery of oil by movement of a combustion front through an oil zone. Two separate Oklahoma field tests were described in publications by Kuhn and Koch, and Grant and Szasz. To obtain basic information needed for making engineering and economic appraisals of commercial recovery of heavy oil by this thermal recovery method, a new field research projecta3,4 was started May 31, 1955. Twelve oil companies contributed to this project with General Petroleum Corp. as operator. Since combustion recovery experiments* with heavy oils in other areas had been conducted in small patterns,"' an important purpose of this test was to determine whether the process could be operated in a pattern of near-commercial well spacing. The south Belridge field, located 30 miles north of Taft, Calif., was chosen because its oil sands are similar to many heavy oil sands which typically have low primary recovery and leave a large amount of oil in place. such fields are not particularly suited for common secondary recovery methods. DESCRIPTION OF TEST SITE The test interval was a Tulare sand at a depth of about 700 ft. Nine test wells were drilled, cored and completed from Oct., 1955, through Jan., 1956. The initial pattern shown on the map, Fig. 1, consisted of an injection well (II)', four producing wells (1P-4P), and four observation wells (IT-4T). An old well (81) was also recompleted for use as an observation well. The area enclosed by the original four production wells was 2.5 acres; the distance from the injection well to each production well was 233 ft. During the combustion period, Well 5P was drilled to replace Well 2P, and Well 6P was drilled to replace Well 3P. The new wells were 25 ft beyond the old production wells along a diagonal from the injection well, and resulted in an increase in pattern area to 2.75 acres. Isopachs are shown in Fig. 1. The average thickness of the oil sand in the test pattern was 30 ft. Fig. 2 presents two cross sections through the test pattern. Oil sand is represented by white and claystone by gray. The dashed lines indicate layers of conglomerate grading to claystone. The sand thickness was fairly uniform throughout the test pattern except in the 1P area. The sand body dips gently from the northwest to southeast, about 3 degrees from horizontal. The sand is unconsoli-dated, and grades from very fine material to pebbles as large as 2 in. in diameter. Table 1 presents the average initial properties of the formation. The in-place porosity of 37 per cent was estimated from the porosity of coke-consolidated cores taken after combustion. A field project to develop and demonstrate a method for alleviating problems of highly mineralized ground water where they occur as isolated zones or pockets in fresh-water aquifers is being conducted in the Ogallala aquifer of eastern New Mexico by the Robert S. Kerr Water Research Center. Removal of contaminated water is by a large-capacity well and the pumped poor-quality water is used locally for secondary recovery of oil. Benefits of the operation are threefold in that the aquifer is being reclaimed for future fresh-water production, contaminated water is being used beneficially, and fresh water which otherwise would have been used for waterflooding is available for other purposes. Ground-water quality in the site has improved markedly after two years of operation. Use of water in the arid and semiarid Southwest has grown so rapidly that demands in many localities far exceed available supplies. In the High Plains region of New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, the only large sources of water are underground reservoirs, being depleted at an alarming rate. In some parts of this region, the aquifers contain pockets of highly mineralized waters; and the mineralized waters in some of them have started spreading in response to the drawdown effects of pumping wells. The aquifers of this region are primarily composed of sand and gravel beds; any cleanup by natural processes will require many tens or even hundreds of years. Most of these pockets of highly mineralized water were caused by oil-field brines seeping downward from earthen disposal pits. Thousands of these pits were in use in the region until only a few years ago when they were prohibited by the oil regulatory agencies of the respective states. The resulting areas of poor quality water are serious enough to warrant much corrective attention. Correction will involve one or more of three approaches: 1) Restrict the pumping of fresh water in the zones where the drawdown of the pumping well will significantly influence the movement of the contaminant. 2) Remove the highly mineralized water entirely from the affected area. 3) Develop and pump the poor-quality water in such a manner that its movement is held in check, even though only a part of the contaminant is actually removed. THE first record of the quarrying of dimension stone in Minnesota dates back to 1820 when limestone was quarried locally for part of old Fort Snelling. Limestone quarries were operated at Stillwater, Mankato, and Winona as early as 1854. Granite was quarried first at St. Cloud in 1868, and within a few years thousands of tons were shipped to widespread points. Rough dimension stone for large buildings furnished the first important market, but beginning in 1886 paving blocks were in demand. The largest shipment was in 1888, when 1925 cars were shipped from the St. Cloud area. Quartzite was quarried first at New Ulm in 1859 and somewhat later at Pipestone and elsewhere in southwestern Minnesota: The productive dolomite quarries at Kasota were opened first in 1868 and have continued as large producers of a variety of stone to the present time. At present, the industry is controlled by relatively few operators, and for that reason detailed figures on dimension stone are not released for publication. A general idea may be obtained from the data in the Minerals Yearbook for 1948. The figures for total stone produced in Minnesota are 1,804,000 tons valued at $5,090,652. Probably the largest item in the latter figure is received from dimension stone. A better idea of the situation, in relation to the country as a whole may be gained by using the data for 1930 when more companies were operating in Minnesota, and complete figures were published. In that year Minnesota produced granite valued at $2,668,119 and ranked third among the states in value. Minnesota's production of granite was almost exclusively for dimension stone. In the same year Minnesota produced 300,000 tons of limestone (dolomite) valued at $840,860, and this likewise was mainly dimension stone. In finished limestone Minnesota ranked second among the states in 1930. Sandstone and minor amounts of quartzite are the only other dimension stones that have been produced in Minnesota, but the quarries are now inactive. The commercial stones of Minnesota have been described in two reports by Bowled and by Thiel and Dutton.2 The early history of quarrying in Minnesota and extensive notes on the various rocks are given by N. H. Winchell.3 Small limestone and dolomite quarries were numerous throughout the area of Paleozoic rocks in southeastern Minnesota. Early production was largely dimension stone. With the increased use of Portland cement, most of these ceased production, and today only those at Kasota and Winona remain in operation. In recent years many quarries have reopened and new ones started, but these are devoted to the production of crushed rock and agricultural lime. As the application of modern quarrying and finishing methods increased, small companies in the granite business have dropped out, and the remaining companies have modernized their plants, purchased old quarries, and opened up new ones, thus furnishing a wide variety of granites suitable for most of the customary uses. It is the purpose of this review to present notes on' the geology and operations of each of the quarries now operating within the state. Granites and Related Igneous Rocks The term granite as used in this report includes granites, gneisses, diorites, gabbros, and other igneous rocks. The granites of greatest economic importance are found in three widely separated regions, see Fig. 1. 1-Central Minnesota in the region of the city of St. Cloud, 2-the upper Minnesota River valley region, 3-the northeastern portion of the state, commonly referred to as the Arrowhead region. The St. Cloud Region: The rocks of the St. Cloud region are mainly granites and related rock types such as monzonites and quartz diorites. The stones may be grouped into three major types, namely, pink granite, red granite and gray granite. Most of the pink granite occurs in the area to the southwest of St. Cloud. The rock is best described as stone with large pink crystals set in a finer grained black and white background. Data on mining applications of geophysical activity in the Free World in 1964 have been made available to SME again this year by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Worldwide data were collected as part of an annual service to the mining industry by the Committee for Geophysical Activity of SEG. Data are taken from 245 voluntary responses (53%) to questionnaires circulated to 463 company, government and university organizations engaged in mining geophysical operations and research all over the world. WORLD ACTIVITY Worldwide manpower utilization totalled 9323 professional man-months and $14.5 million was reported spent in mining geophysical activity in 1964. This is up from 9078 man-months and $12.6 million in 1963 and 8065 man-months and $12.8 million in 1962. Worldwide geophysical activity in terms of manpower utilization and expenditures is presented in the accompanying table.
