An open pit rock structure usually contains geological planes of weakness. They are formed by joints, faults, bedding planes, fractures, and cleavages. Rock slope failures often occur in the form of sliding of rock blocks along a plane or several planes. Such a rock block has three- dimensional geometry, and consequently a vector method of analysis has been found useful in evaluating its stability. Rock blocks of a tetrahedral shape with one free surface have been analyzed by Londe. Rock blocks formed by sets of parallel joints have been analyzed by Wittke. The present chapter presents the analysis of rock blocks formed by planes of weakness of arbitrary orientation, and of three-dimensional geometry.

Vapor pressure determinations were made on synthesized germanium sulfides. Germanium and cadmium were removed from sphalerite concentrates by fuming. The fume was retreated to separate some of the cadmium from the germanium and, at the same time, upgrade the germanium to more than 5 pet content. MANY sphalerite concentrates contain certain impurities which have economic value as byproducts. These may include the volatile sulfides of germanium, cadmium, and lead. MUCH information concerning pegmatites which was thought to be true a few years ago has been proved false, and what is now actually known about some pegmatites is not true of many others. The erratic and seemingly unpredictable structure and variable composition of this class of mineral deposits has been widely emphasized. Even parts of the same pegmatite body exhibit marked differences in texture, mineral composition, width, and attitude. Constructive geological thinking in respect to pegmatites now aims to establish general laws rather than to stress the confusing diversity of features having no special economic significance.

VArIoUs classes of coals are recognized in this country at the present time. These classes depend largely upon physical characteristics rather than upon chemical composition, and consequently they cannot be accurately defined. The divisions into anthracite, semi-anthracite and semi-bituminons are fairly satisfactory; but the term bituminous embraces so large a variety of coal that it is of little value, and the term lignite is so loosely applied that it has little or no place in a scientific classification.

In making heating gas with anthracite coal for roasting ore during the past few years, I have tried many forms of gas generators. So far, the most successful and satisfactory one has been what we call a fluxing producer, which is simply a small cupola or blast furnace, in which we charge with the coal, say, 30 or 40 per cent. of basic blast-furnace cinder, to unite, when melted, with the ash or earthy matter in the coal, and carry it off as cinder. The producer we have in use at Chester, N. J., has more of the lines of a blast furnace than a cupola, the hearth being 24 inches diameter and 24 inches high. It then enlarges on an angle of about 25 degrees from a perpendicular to 4 feet, and then is drawn into 3 feet on top ; total height, 12 feet. We use one water coil-tuyere 12 inches above the bottom, and blow through a 1 1/2 - inch nozzle. The depth of coal above the tuyere averages about 6 feet. The producer-is blown with

IRON and steel were the only basic industries in the Soviet Republic in 1928 that lagged behind the pre-war production on a comparative basis. This was due to the almost complete obliteration of all industrial units manufacturing iron and steel products during the Revolution, which resulted in the production of 1921 being only 4 per cent of that of 1913. By the end of 1927 the production of pig iron had reached a point equal to 70.5, per cent of 1913; steel was 84 per cent ; and rolled iron was 78 per cent. According to the. planned program of the Supreme Economic Council, the pre-war level of the iron and steel industry was to have been reached and exceeded during 1929-30. (communication to the Secretary *) :-Professor Hofman's paper brings the art up to . date. As I was one of the pioneers in this business, I beg to give the following incomplete data regarding my efforts in this line. In the year 1883, while I was in charge of the smelting-operations at Mine La Motte, Mo., there was at the concentrator an unusually large production of a middle product, locally called "iron," which carried considerable values in nickel and cobalt, and which it was desirable, for this reason, to treat by itself. The works could not spare a furnace for the purpose; and to handle this product I improvised a "roast-hearth " from an old " lead-hearth." This was a small cast-iron furnace of the usual construction, about 2 by 4 ft. in dimensions, with a hollow cast-iron back, through which the wind circulated before entering the tuyeres. I had a cast-iron grate made to fit this hearth, and placed it flush with the lip, or apron, and above the tuyeres. On this grate, which had round holes about 0.25 in. in diameter, and a total surface of about 20 by 40 in., I roasted the nickeliferous pyrite product; starting the fire with kindling, then adding charcoal, and then gradually feeding the sulphides with a shovel, so as to cover the fire, choke down blow-holes, and get an even bed. Blast at a pressure of 3 or 4 oz. was supplied by a fail-blower. When a cake of roasted material had formed, it was removed with a steel bar, or fork, to the lip of the furnace, and thence into a wheel-barrow.. The fine material which had remained unmelted, but very hot, on top of the cake would promptly ignite when the cake was broken up and removed. IS there a quick way of assessing the conditions of a newly exposed roof in a coal mine? This has always been a nagging question. The problem is that unless effective controls are established as soon as possible, it becomes extremely difficult to extract coal safely and economically from conventional underground milling operations. Until recently, little has been done to provide a means of measuring the structural behavior of a coal mine roof while the face advances during actual production. (In fact, most measurements have always been made after the fact or during a roof pull-down where the roof is actually caused to fail with no support.)

Secondary minerals are the result of a process of concentration and enrichment and are commonly richer than the primary minerals of the same deposit. Secondary ores that contain abundant sulphides are commonly distinguishable in the field from primary ores; this distinction is more difficult with ores that carry a small quantity only of sulphide minerals, and microscopical examination of the ore in thin section is advisable in all doubtful cases. It is frequently difficult, and in some cases impossible, to determine the primary or secondary character of quartzose gold ores. The safest guide is the presence or absence of gaseous or fluid inclusions in association with the ore minerals; such primary association coupled with a lack of traces of oxidation is indicative of primary origin. Any ore that carries traces of oxidation, such as iron stains, endritic oxides of manganese, kaolin and so forth must be considered to have been acted upon by surface agencies, and secondary enrichment must be suspected. Further examination, however, may indicate that the contained value is primary, and, therefore, persistent in its vertical distribution. The manner of occurrence of secondary minerals is frequently characteristic; secondary minerals, being due to the action of surface waters, are commonly found in cracks through earlier minerals, or as crusts lining vugs or surrounding nucleal masses, or in general, in some distribution later than and not conforming to the arrangement of the primary minerals. IN October, 1925, J. R. Finlay delivered an address entitled, "The Future Price of Lead." Lead was then selling at 8.85c. and Mr. Finlay and most of the rest of us were concerned about the shortage. Now, a little more than six years after, lead is selling for 3.55c., and nobody is worrying about the difficulty of getting plenty of it. For 1931 the U. S. G. S. reports United States produc¬tion as 390,000 tons of recoverable lead in ore. Our estimate is slightly higher than this; nearer 400,000 tons. This is the smallest production since 1911 and 1912, but in spite of this, stocks for the year-have increased nearly 50,000 tons. Our estimate for the production outside the United States is 1,120,000 tons, or more than double the production of either 1920 or 1921, and 30 per cent more than in 1913. Stocks abroad probably have not increased more than stocks in the United States. In other words, foreign consumption is double what it was in 1.920-21, whereas domestic consumption is substantially less. It looks as if Mr. Krueger, president of the Swedish match trust, was right when he said that "This country had better stop worrying about Europe and think a little bit more about its own affairs."
