Twenty years ago, the standard voltage for stripping machines was 4160 v and few people even thought of using a higher voltage. It was adequate for the machines of the day, which seldom exceeded 2500 hp, and higher voltages were considered to be too expensive and even dangerous. Then, in 1956, a 4500-hp machine was placed in operation and it was determined, with some reluctance, that it should operate on 7200 v. The next step, to 14,400 v, was taken in 1964 and the latest, but perhaps not final, step was made in 1967, when voltage was increased to 25,000 v. Today, 4160 v is considered almost obsolete and 7200 v is generally considered standard. However, a few mines are using 14,400 v and some eight machines soon will be operating on 25 KV, indicating that the technical and safety problems have been solved and that there must be some merit to the higher voltages. Thus, it is logical to question, "How do I determine the best voltage for my operation?"

DURING the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone, quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide, The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the over-burden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and trans-ported to the dump in quarry cars, Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semi-circle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft, above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river: As quarrying pro-gressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp,, 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft, above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting hays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage.

In connection with some of the experiments carried out by the writer on the behavior of gas and oil in a sand reservoir,' an interesting phenomenon was observed which may throw some new light on the problem of recovery of oil from a natural reservoir. The experiments are intended to show the effect of the surface area of the occluded gas masses, originally present in a reservoir, on the further evolution of gas from the oil and its consequent effect upon the rate of production of oil. The apparatus used in the experimental work is shown in Fig. 1. It consists primarily of a sand reservoir R and a displacement chamber D, which is used to induce small variations in volume. The reservoir and displacement chamber form a unit, and a lowering of the plunger D is equivalent to increasing the volume occupied by the oil and gas in the reservoir. The reservoir was first filled with dead oil and maintained under pressure until it was ascertained that most of the free gas had gone into solution. The volume of free gas present in the reservoir was computed from the coefficient of compressibility of the fluids by means of the displacement chamber D, reading to 0.005 c.c. and a special gage J reading to 0.02 lb. per sq. in. The oil was saturated with gas under pressure in reservoir S by circulating the oil for a long period of time through the gear pump B. Subsequently, the saturated oil was circulated through the sand reservoir following the circuit S6, B, S6, R4, the sand reservoir R, R1, R², F4, F1, back to reservoir S. In the following experiments the sand reservoir R was filled with gas-saturated oil at a pressure of 415Ib. per sq. in. with no free gas present. This was ascertained by closing off all the outlet valves and determining the coefficient of compressibility of the system by means of the displacement chamber D. INTRODUCTION More than five years have elapsed since the first shortwall panel was installed in a US mine in 1972. By the latest count, 11 mines have tried the shortwall method on 34 panels. Potentially, the shortwall method (see Figure 1) offers the combined advantages of longwall and continuous mlning. But just like any other mining method, shortwall is not a panacea. It is only applicable under a set of stringent conditions. Coal operators at eight of the eleven mines are satisfied with shortwall mining, though there are only five mines presently producing coal from shortwall panels.

IN making comparisons of steel industries, one country with another, the convenient common denominator is annual capacity to make raw steel in the form of ingots. It is always necessary, however, to remember that there are different methods of figuring such capacity. For most countries no official figures on capacity are available, and the only authentic data on production are now six or eight years old. But in spite of those limitations on the accuracy of statistical comparisons, any flaws in the figures are probably not serious enough to alter materially the larger conclusions which may be drawn from them.

Conditions at the properties of the Consolidated Coal Co. had reached a point where improvements were almost impractical. The mines, sunk years ago, had shafts and entries so small as to preclude the use of large mine cars. A radical change was necessary in the type of mining and also in the type of mine to accommodate such haulage units. After due consideration, the company decided to enter the field of trackless mining, utilizing belt conveyors and chain-flight conveyors, the belt conveyors to take the long haul, and the chain-flight conveyors to be used for gathering. It was decided not to sink a shaft, hut to drive a slope on an inclination of 17½°, which the company believes to be about the limit on which coal can be carried on a belt without rolling back unduly. Sinking the Slope It was decided, in sinking the slope, to make an opencut until rock was reached, which was some 65 ft. below the surface, and then to drive the slope through an inclined tunnel from that point. In making the open-cut, the schedule called for the removal of about 25,000 cu. yd. of clay, holding the banks on an inclination of one and a half to one, the thought being to make this cut in a minimum of time, put in a reinforced concrete slope, and then back-fill. Difficulty was experienced because the clay was of a sort that was called "subsiding base" material by contractors visiting the job. In other words, a "squeeze" occurred, the pressure causing the floor of the cut to move up just as it does in many mines where the coal is underlain by thick fire clay and inadequate pillars have been left. It was necessary to move the waste banks back from the edge of the cut 700 or 800 ft., and even then the floor could not be controlled, the result being that almost 100,000 cu. yd. of clay was handled before the rock was reached. A concrete slope was then rapidly constructed, using 95 tons of special-shaped reinforcing iron. The floor of this slope was made 30 in. thick at the bottom, and 17 in. thick at the top, the sidewalls being 18 in.

ON Oct. 5, 1926, the day before the general ses-sions of the fall meeting of the American Insti-tute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at Pittsburgh, a round table conference on the combus-tibility and testing of coke was held at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station. There were about fifty present, with A. C. Fieldner, chief chemist of the Bureau of Mines, as chairman. The following organi-zations were represented: American Institute of Min-ing and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society for Testing Materials, American Gas Association, Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association, Gas and Fuel Division of, American Chemical Society, and Southern Ohio Pig Iron and Coke Association. In opening the proceedings, Mr. Fieldner explained that the meeting had been called at the suggestion of several members of the Institute and members of other organizations. The subject is of interest to the pro-ducer and the user of coke whether it be in a blast furnace, cupola furnace, house-heating furnace, open grate, gas producer, or in a water-gas generator. There has been much confusion on this subject largely because there is no common definition of combustibility. Does the blast-furnace superintendent, the coke-oven operator, and the fuel engineer have the same under-standing of the term "combustibility"? If a common understanding can be reached, many differences of opinion will disappear. COMBUSTIBILITY OF COKE R. H. Sweetser of Columbus, Ohio, disagreed with the statement of P. H. Royster, T. L. Joseph, and S. P. Kinney in Reports of Investigations, Serial No. 2524, of the Bureau of Mines, in which it was stated that the coke-oven op-erator cannot change coke combustibility by modifying oven practice. Mr. Sweetser held that the coke-oven man can change the combustibility of coke. Blast-furnace men know that coke that will burn easily with low pressure and will. come down in the regular way in the furnace can be pro-duced from a given mixture of coal. His idea of the combustibility of coke is the rate of flow through the com-bustion zone of the blast furnace. If the coke does not pass through in normal manner it is highly incombustible. H. J. Rose of the Koppers Co., Pittsburgh, objected to being pinned down so closely on this phase of the com-bustibility and incombustibility of coke. Coke-oven men are frequently obliged to change oven conditions to make a coke which gives blast-furnace men what they want. The size of the coke and the screening have an important bear-ing on combustibility, and there are many cases on record where by simply changing the different sizes of the coke, everything worked smoothly, and that is a much more combustible coke.

Carbon may affect the alloys of copper in several ways. Provided an alloying element does not oxidize preferentially, even minute quantities of carbon dissolved in liquid alloys of high copper content will form insoluble carbon oxide gases under oxidizing conditions. Gas porosity in castings of high-copper alloys can originate in this way. In certain alloys of low copper content carbon may have considerable solubility and may be an effective deoxidizer. In these alloys carbon will tend to suppress porosity. Carbon that is dissolved in the molten alloy is likely to be retained in the solidified metal. The effects of carbon on the physical properties of the metal are determined by the form in which it is present. Depending on the alloying elements and also on the cooling rate, carbon may precipitate as graphite, may form a carbide or may remain in solid solution on cooling. As solid copper does not dissolve a measurable amount of carbon, a carbon-bearing solid solution can occur only if the copper is alloyed with a large excess of an element that forms such a solution. The effect of graphite or of carbides on the properties of an alloy will depend on the size and distribution of the precipitated particles. As Hensel pointed out in discussion,' the formation of an alloy carbide may interfere with the age-hardening properties of a copper alloy. One would also expect that the presence of carbides or of graphite will under certain conditions promote corrosion or high-temperature failure in nonferrous alloys. Since carbon has an effect on the soundness of castings and affects the structure and behavior of solid copper alloys, its solubility in the liquid alloys is of practical importance. The isothermal change of carbon solubility with alloy composition is of interest from a theoretical standpoint. The binary alloys of copper with manganese and with nickel are used industrially and serve as a base for more complex alloys. The solubility of carbon in each of these metals is known, but its solubility in their alloys has not been determined. Earlier Data The solubility of carbon in molten pure copper is about o.oooi pct at II00°C and 0.0004 pct at 1475°C.l Various authors2""6 have published data on the solubility of carbon in molten manganese. There is agreement on a value of about 6.7 pct in the temperature range r2170 to 1245°c This solubility value corresponds to the formula Mn3C. It increases very little with increasing temperature. THE Kingsport formation, a part of the Knox dolomite of Ordovician age, is composed of 538 ft of dolomitc and limestone. Numerous bands, layers and nodules of chert, arenaceous and shale zones are present. The characteristics displayed by these features have been useful in mapping, prospecting and mining. Perhaps a better understanding of the origin of these zones will increase their usefulness. Introduction The presence of numerous bands, nodules, and irregular bodies of chert within the Kingsport formation in the Mascot locality has long been recognized. Oder and Miller1 mention the general characteristics, but do not deal with the chert occurrences in detail. When the occurrence of chert is studied in fresh exposures underground, a variety of characteristics is noted which has been useful in correlation and in detailing the sub-surface stratigraphy. Although the writer has no desire to enter into a controversy over the origin of chert, many observations have been made of its local characterigtics. A detailed stratigraphic section is included which shows the position of the individual horizons discussed in the following paragraphs. The term "chertification" has been adopted from Fowler and Lyden2 for use here. It refers to the replacement of lime- stone by introduced silicic acid. The writer uses it to refer to the occurrencc of introduced or original chert in limestone and dolomite. In this writing "syngenetic chert" refers to chert which has been deposited contemporaneously with the enclosing limestone or dolomite. Also, it is considered to include interstitial silica shown by chemical analysis and insoluble residues. The term "epigenetic" is applied to all chert which has been introduced after consolidation of the rocks in which it occurs, regardless of the nature of the depositing solutions. Syngenetic Chert It is the belief of the author that a large percentage of the chert found in the Kingsport formation is syngenetic. The widespread occurrence of similar nodules and bands of chert in the same horizon far from one another and far from areas of deformation or alteration of the enclosing rocks is difficult to explain by infiltration of the silica after compaction of the enclosing rocks. When chert of this type does occur near zones of movement it is likely to be involved in faulting and brecciation which indicates that it was deposited prior to deformation. Older Epigenetic Chert There are several occurrences of nodules in the Kingsport which seem to be epigenetic as pointed out in the following examples: A cherty zone occurs 26 ft above the o bed (Fig =). This is not always present but is found in the greater part of mine work-

A tentative plan for the Colorado Meeting has been formulated as follows: One day will be spent at Denver, one day at Colorado Springs, one day at Cripple Creek, a trip by automobile to the top of Pike's Peak, one day at Pueblo, one day at Leadville. All the principal mines and mills of the districts mentioned will be visited, including the gold mines in Cripple Creek, the lead, zinc, and steel works. of Pueblo, the production of ferro-molybdenum by electric furnace at Leadville, etc. Special arrangements are being made for the social entertainment of ladies at all points; one evening at Colorado Springs will be devoted to a reception and dance, and the usual dinner will he given on another evening. Solid-state electrochemical measurements by three alternative experimental procedures were made with the cell FeO, Fe3O4 |Zro.85Cao.15O1.85 |Cu| Zr0.85CaO.15O1.85 | FeO, Fe304 to establish the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper in the temperature range 800" to 1030°C. The solubility of oxygen in solid copper and the diflusivity of oxygen in solid copper Dgu = 1.7 X 10-2 exp(-16,000/RT) Cm2/sec were determined and confirmed in alternative experiments. The enthalpy of solution of oxygen in solid copper equals —10,000 cal per mole; the partial excess entropy of the oxygen atoms in the Cu-O dilute solution is approximately the same as that found for interstitial atoms in other metals. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper is consistent with that expected for an interstitial atom. RELIABLE values for the saturation solubility N(s) and diffusivity DO of oxygen in solid copper have not been unambiguously established in the literature. Following three early determinations by others,1"3 Rhines and Mathewson4 reported that the solubility of oxygen in solid copper increased from 0.007 at. pct 0 at 600°C to about 0.015 pct at 1050°C. Phillips and skinner,, using essentiially the same analytical procedure, reported that the solid solubility increases from 0.0018 at. pct 0 at 550°C to about 0.0075 pct at 1050OC. The only previous value for the diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper was reported by Ransley.6 Ransley deoxidized Cu-Cu2O alloys in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide gas to yield a solubility-diffusivity product. He used the solubility data of Rhines and Mathewson to calculate the diffusivity values. Another method for obtaining the solubility-diffusivity product (N(s) DO) is by measuring the widths of internal-oxidation zones in copper alloys as reported by Verfurth and Rapp.7 However, the calculated N(S)Do products depend upon the alloy content of the specimen, so that the internal oxidation of copper alloys does not follow ideal internal oxidation kinetics. As a result, unequivocal values for the N(s) DO product were not obtained by this procedure. A solid-state coulometric titration technique similar to that employed in this work was introduced by C. Wagner8 to study the dependence on silver activity of the Ag/S ratio in silver sulfide in the temperature range of 160" to 300°C. Similar experiments have been carried out by C. Wagner and co-workers9-11 to study the stoichiometry range of silver and copper tellurides, cuprous sulfide, and cuprous selenide. Numerous authors have carried out electrochemical measurements with a solid oxygen-ion-conducting electrolyte to determine the solubility and/or diffusivity of dissolved oxygen in several liquid metals.12-l6 Rickert and Steiner17,18 have used solid-state electrochemical measurements to determine the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver from 760" to 900°C. Two different cell geometries were used. In the cell of linear geometry Fe, FeO | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [1] oxygen diffused from the interior of the silver electrode to the silver/electrolyte interface where the oxygen activity had been lowered from a fixed initial value to practically zero by the application of voltage to the cell. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver was determined from the solution of the diffusion equation and the time dependence of the cell current. However, this determination of the diffusion coefficient depended upon a knowledge of the solubility of oxygen in solid silver. A cylindrical geometry was used for the cell Pt, O2(Po2 = 0.21 atm) | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [II] which also allowed the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver to be determined. These values were in agreement with other available data.l9 Recently, Raleigh20,21 used a method involving the measurement of diffusion-limited currents in a cell involving the AgBr solid electrolyte to determine the diffusion coefficient of silver in Ag-Au alloys at 400°C. Diffusivity values on the order of l0-14 sq cm per sec were measured in the alloy composition range 10 to 60 at. pct Ag in a single experiment. From numerous electrical conductivity and galvanic cell measurements,9'22"26 the solid solution Zr0.85 Ca0.15 O1.85 has been established as an electrolyte with predominant oxygen ion conduction over a wide range of intermediate and high oxygen activities. For interrelating the thermodynamics and the kinetics of the dissolution of oxygen in solid copper in this investigation, a galvanic cell was constructed with FeO-Fe3O4 as the reversible reference electrode, the Zr0.85Ca0.15 O1.85 electrolyte, and a pure copper specimen under-saturated in oxygen as the other electrode. An inventory of the mineral resources of a region is a most desirable basis for planning their systematic development. In the absence of appropriate samples upon which to base a reliable estimate of this inventory, investigators have resorted to a number of indirect approaches; the unit regional value concept forms the basis for one such approach. The produced resources of a region are a function of the inventory multiplied by the degree of intensity (some fraction between zero and one) of development of the resources. A convenient means of expressing this amount is to accumulate the weight and value of resource and to prorate the totals over the area represented by the unit sampled; i.e., weight and value per unit area or tonnes/km.2 and U.S. 1967 $/km.2. When this approach is used for the U.S.A., South Africa and Rhodesia the average value of (log.) U.S. 67$/km.2 for the states of the U.S.A. and South Africa are similar ($55,176 U.S.$67/km.2 and $52,538/km.2 respectively); whereas, Rhodesia is relatively underdeveloped (10,301 U.S.67$/km.2). On the other hand if the individual commodities are used as a basis for comparison, the U.S.A. shows the greatest diversity (67 commodities out of a possible total of 75) with South Africa next (50 commodities) and Rhodesia last with only 26 commodities. Since it is known that area and value are not simply related perhaps diversity is directly related to area. Again the kinds of commodities which have contributed the greatest value to the totals differs, with fuels (petroleum, coal and natural gas) predominating in the U.S.A. totals; whereas, South Africa and Rhodesia obtain their greatest contributions from gold, diamonds (S. Africa) coal and asbestos. In each case the greatest value of resources is produced from sedimentary rocks. As a somewhat different kind of example, consider a single resource (petroleum, the most valuable in the U.S.A.) over a large area (number of sampling units) the U.S.A. by state. Furthermore, assume that the model frequency distribution of the amount of petroleum (tonnes/km.2) is log normal. Then the present production fails to match the model first because 17 states (34% out of 50) have not produced petroleum. Of the remaining 33 states, Louisiana has produced the most (15,177 tonnes/km.2) and the frequency histogram is still skew. A spatial analysis of the distribution of the amount of petroleum by state shows that the samples (i.e., states) are not random; the non-producers and producers tend to cluster. It remains to be seen if this is indeed a true representation of the incidence of petroleum or is a function of the exploration philosophy currently in vogue.

SULPHUR is a very well known mineral and apparently is produced in many places. It is engendered from an unctuous earthy and powerfully hot substance so that it is considered among experienced workers to bear a resemblance to the element of fire. This is called by these same men the masculine seed and the prime agent of Nature in the composition of metals. Because of its great dryness and heat it has, as experience shows, affinity with fire, which is easily introduced in it when brought near. And once introduced the fire is quenched only with difficulty before its unctuousness is wholly consumed. Although it shows itself to us of such a hot and dry nature, we must not think that sulphur is a substance so pure that it can stand by itself or that in order to attain its form it has no need of its portion and part of moisture like every other mixture. This is shown to us by its easy fusion, in which it resembles the metals. This thing is found in many places and in many varieties of color; some are white, others yellow and orange, and some others between gray and black. They also say that some red is found. It does not occur in that arrangement of veins like other minerals, but most liberal Nature makes whole mountains of it as is seen in the Aeolian islands, [26] near Sicily, in Etna or Moncibello which is the island of Sicily, at Pozzuoli, in the territory of Rome, in the Sienese domain at San Filippo, and in many other similar places. It is a substance that has a very strong odor and is most unpleasant to smell. It is very fixed in its substance so that it is never corrupted by time, by boiling, or by the moisture of water. For although it may stand in water a long time it never becomes soft nor does it ever decrease or increase in weight. It is brittle and easily crushed very fine. It is said that a trace of garlic rubbed on the mortar helps anyone who wishes to reduce it to impalpability. Its ores have a form more like earth than like stone although they some¬times have the color of a certain soft rock. The places where it is found are easily recognized by the great odor that they give out and by the very hot baths that often spring forth near it. WITH the gradual exhaustion of the upper veins in the anthracite coal-fields, the problem of mining at greater depths acquires increasing importance and demands the consideration of a number of important factors, one of which is the greater earth-pressure and the consequent necessity of stronger support o for the roof. Under the pillar-and-chamber system, almost exclusively followed in the Northern anthracite-field, the highest economy in mining is generally secured by leaving, on first mining, pillars only sufficient to support safely the overlying strata. As to the necessary size of such pillars, the opinions of mining experts are widely divergent. In establishing the width of chambers and pillars, the thickness of vein and its depth below the surface have received little consideration. For. instance, it has been quite usual to work both overlying and underlying veins with the same width of chambers and pillars, when the lower vein was two and one-half times as thick, and twice as fits below the surface, as the upper. In view of the generally-accepted theory that the crushing-strength of coal-pillars of the same base-area becomes less with increased height, it is probable, in this instance at least, that the most economical mining has not been secured. This question of adequate pillar-support is economically less important down to about 800 ft. than at greater depths; and it is with reference to mining at these greater depths that the study of the subject here presented has been prompted. The necessity of leaving larger pillars, involving greater mining-costs per ton and also smaller yields per acre, is one of the troubles of deep working. To mine without leaving adequate pillar-supports will result, sooner or later, in a squeeze. Limited areas, it is true, have been mined at certain widths of
