Experiments were carried out using the cyclone to treat coal in the size range -2.0+0 mm. The diameters of the cyclone outlets (vortex finder and spigot) were varied to study their effects on cyclone performance. The cyclone products were deslimed over a screen with an aperture of 0.075 mm. The performance of the separator was studied for washing coarse coal (-2.0+0.075 mm) and fines (-0.075 mm). Performance curves were plotted for the separation of -2.0+0.075 mm coal. The concept of a generalised distribution curve was adopted to predict cyclone performance. A mathematical representation was derived from the generalised distribution curve. The specific gravity of separation for individual size fractions showed a decreasing trend with decreasing particle size down to 0.85 mm, beyond which a reverse trend was noted. It was also found that the fine size fraction (-0.075 mm) does not separate on the basis of size or specific gravity but follows the water distribution

Five mine fire experiments were conducted in a 2.08m high and 2.90m wide, ventilated mine entry in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)'s Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to determine the effect of the dispersion of carbon monoxide (CO) on mine fire detection. CO measurements were made at distances from 7.6 m to 45.2 m downwind from the fire with diffusion mode CO sensors positioned near the roof. For small intensity fires, less than 30 kW heat release rate, generated by 14 kg coal in a 0.61 m square tray, it was determined that air flow and sensor spacing were significant for fire detection at the 10 ppm CO alarm level. Within 15.0 m downwind distance from the fire, 10 ppm CO alarm values occurred for volumetric air flows less than 11.5 m3/s. However, the 10 ppm CO alarm value did not occur 30.0 m downwind from the fire for air quantities greater than 6.2 m3/s due to dilutive mixing of the CO in the air stream. The criterion that the mine fire alarms occur within 15 min of the onset of flaming combustion could not be consistently met with the 10 ppm CO alarm. This suggests the use of lower CO alarm values, or reduced CO sensor spacings for mine fire protection. It is demonstrated how computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can be used to model the CO dispersion downwind from the fire in support of a plan to optimize sensor spacings.

The Zhilingtou Au-Ag deposit is situated in the eastern part of the complexly deformed and metamorphosed South China Caledonian Fold Belt. It consists of seven orebodies that are almost exclusively hosted by biotite plagioclase gneiss of the Precambrian Chencai Group. They form an apparent en echelon pattern in both cross-section and level plan. Three different ore types, based on mineralization textures, have been recognised within the Zhilingtou lode. These are Au-Ag-rich quartz veins, Au and Ag-bearing silicified rocks and Au-Ag-containing altered rocks with quartz stockworks. The mineralisation is principally composed of electrum, argentite, pyrite and minor sphalerite, galena as well as traces of hessite and chalcopyrite plus a gangue assemblage of quartz, rhodonite, sericite and chlorite. Fluid inclusions related to Au-Ag mineralisation yield a wide range of homogenisation temperatures from 110 to 447¦C, with two distinctive peak values at 250 - 300¦C and 350 - 400¦C respectively. d30Si values of quartz veins and silicification from the three stages of mineralisation range from -0.1 to -0.4ë. The mineralisation at Zhilingtou is interpreted as forming by recirculated meteoric water extracting ore-forming elements from metamorphic rocks due to Mesozoic volcano-magmatic activity.

Edmonton South LRT is the latest expansion of the Subway system in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada: Consisting of twin 5.8m segmental lined tunnels, 280m long, driven by a Lovat EPB machine. The key challenges were as follows. A 6% downhill grade. Tight radius curves of 250m.Overlying structures within 3m of the tunnel. Strata consisting of sand above the water table, glacial tills and bed rock below the water table. Located within The University of Alberta Campus and adjacent to a hospital. Northern Alberta climate with winter temperatures routinely falling below—minus 30 degrees Celsius. This paper provides a case history and outlines the challenges involved in completing this project.

In 2012, a single module heavy medium cyclone plant (HMP) was installed at the Glencore Zinc’s (then Xstrata Zinc) McArthur River lead zinc mine. The HMP formed the first part of the MRM Phase 3 Project to increase run of mine (ROM) capacity from 2.4 to 5.5 Mt/a.The purpose of the HMP is to remove liberated gangue from the crusher product at minimal loss of valuable mineral. The McArthur ores are very finely disseminated requiring a fine primary grind size prior to rougher flotation. Rejecting waste prior to grinding therefore offers significant power and grinding media savings. The plant was designed to treat only those ores with a reasonable upgrade ratio at the target zinc recovery across the HMP of 95%.On this basis, a 1.8 Mt/a single module plant was built based on 250 t/h feed rate and 82% availability. In contrast to existing base metal heavy medium plants in Australia, the MRM Flow sheet utilised the principles in modern coal heavy medium cyclone plant design. Since commissioning, the plant feed rate has been significantly increased and is now normally operated up to 540 t/h (dry basis).Although this throughput increase is partially due to debottlenecking work, it is also attributable to the conservative design parameters for base metal heavy medium cyclone circuits in comparison to those used in equivalent coal circuits.This paper discusses Flow sheet design and compares traditional base metal design parameters with those achieved at MRM and those of modern coal plants. It provides information on plant capital and operating costs and the net savings realised by its installation. A genesis based on new developments in the physical chemistry and flow properties of colloidal substances is proposed for the pipe-like Peko orebody. The rheological behaviour of sediments is governed by the contained colloids. Remobilization of thick pasty sediment during diagenesis is regarded as an essential step in the concentration of metal dispersed in sediments. At a high concentration the sediment pore fluid is a dense gelloid such that van der Waals attractive forces between the colloidal particles exceeds the coulombic repulsion. This permits accretion of the colloids into globular clots and their fracture fragments. These have a uniform size distribution dependent upon the rate of shear, and the sediment lithifies to clotted, porphyry-like, "gritty", dolomitic or igneous-looking intrusions and flows. The physical chemical properties of natural sediment colloids appear adequate to account for ore formation.Adsorption accounts for the dispersion and retention of metal in sediments. Accretion accounts for the segregation of the colloidal materials to give the various types of clotted igneous-looking intrusive source rocks. Syneresis enables the colloids to spontaneously draw together and to dehydrate. Formation of an ordered lattice achieves a lower energy state and desorbs metals and insoluble metal compounds "particle by particle" into the escaping water of hydration and pore water. Peptization enables migration of the metal hydrosols as stable dispersions until they merge for outflow through seepage zones or water extrusion channels. Nucleation and concretion precipitate the metal dispersoids from pore waters seeping through hydrous parts of the source rock, porous beds, faults, and zones of weakness by which the connate waters leave the lithifying sediments. Gelatinous precipitated mineral matter in the ore channels is capable of thixotropic reliquefaction when disturbed by shock or movement. Local reintrusion, flowage, interveinings,brecciation, and intermixing of the materials is the result.The principles of the suggested genesis are applicable to both syngenetic and epigenetic mineral accumulations.

In one step extraction cycle, the following results are obtained:[Ni]/[Co]>4000 and [Ni]/[Cu]>40000 in nickel sulphate solution, [Co]/[Ni]>1000 and [Co]/[Cu]>30000 in cobalt chlorinate solution, [Cu]/[Ni]>10000 and [Cu]/[Co]>200 in copper sulphate solution. It was elucidated that the above-mentioned synergistic mixtures can effectively separate cobalt and copper from nickel sulphate acid solution and achieve a greater synergistic effect.

"INTRODUCTION Much of the recent progress in increasing the efficiency of oil-well performance can be attributed to advancements in the art of cleaning wells. Through research and development by operators and service companies during the past decade, significant improvements in the application of engineering and chemical principles to well-cleaning technology have widened greatly the scope of ""clean-out"" methods to the end that greater ultimate recovery of oil will be attained.This report reviews recent improvements and developments on this important problem in California; it describes also the use of various methods and tools for cleaning wells to stimulate or revive their productivity. Developments in preventing and removing mud sheaths in well-completion operations also are described. The report is based on a field survey, supplemented by data from the technical and patent literature and from manufacturers' catalogs, which contain much valuable information.In preparing the material for publication as a Bureau of Mines report, the author has been fully aware of certain limiting conditions that attend the discussion of a subject such as that treated in this report. The following are examples:1. To a considerable extent, well cleaning in California is done with tools rented from service companies, and their representatives and employees are specialists in jobs of this type. They usually have working experience with their own equipment and methods which greatly exceeds that of persons whose interest has been casual or who have had no opportunity to study the subject in detail in actual practice. Many of the tools and methods are covered by letters patent for the protection that may be in developing and successfully applying these mechanical and chemical means of increasing the production of wells. Frequently several years have been required to perfect a given tool or technique, requiring relatively large investments to establish a service that is remunerative to those who have primary interest in a certain development and at the same time attractive enough to the operators of producing properties (because of greater quantities of oil delivered into the flow tanks) to warrant employment of or contractual agreements with a particular service group."

Biomineralization of manganese on titanium condenser material exposed to seawater has been illustrated. Biom-ineralization occurs when the fouling components, namely, the microbes, are able to oxidize minerals present in water and deposit them as insoluble oxides on biofilm surfaces. Extensive biofilm characterization studies showed that an alarmingly large number of bacteria in these biofilms are capable of oxidizing manganese and are, thereby, capable of causing biomineralization on the condenser material exposed to seawater. This paper addresses studies on understanding the exact role of the microbes in bringing about oxidation of manganese. The kinetics of manganese oxidation by marine Gram-positive manganese oxidizing bacterium Bacillus spp. that was isolated from the titanium surface was studied in detail. Manganese oxidation in the presence of Bacil-lus cells, by cell free extract (CFE) and heat-treated cell free extract was also studied. The study confirmed that bacteria mediate manganese oxidation and lead to the formation of biogenic oxides of MnO2, eventually leading to biomineralization on titanium surface exposed to seawater.

New buildings in today's urban environment, especially in down-town areas, invariably involve the construction of multiple level basements. Used for parking, storage and commercial space, these underground structures normally extend 30 to 50' and more below grade and, to make optimum use of expensive land, they usually occupy the full site right up to street/sidewalk and property lines. SOIL SUPPORT SOLUTIONS Building these basements requires vertical excavation, and consequently, a temporary soil support system which will eventually be replaced by the permanent foundation walls of the structure.

Stirred milling using either horizontal or vertical mills has made a rapid entrance into PGM ore and tailings concentrator flow sheets. Currently there are in excess of 40 units installed in either mainstream, ?MIG? or intermediate concentrate regrind, ?UFG?, applications in PGM, primary ore treatment plants or in tailings scavenging and reclamation treatment plants. This represents a total of approximately 70 MW of installed fine grinding equipment. This paper outlines the reasons why the technology take-up has been rapid and illustrates the advantages of this technology over conventional milling. Indian limestone mines which are highly mechanized in operation and supply limestone to the cement plants have been quite successful in devising ways and means to optimize blasting parameters, so as to have best fragmentation, powder factor, and cost of excavation. In primary blasting mechanized or manually mixed ammonium nitrate Fuel Oil is quite popular in dry holes, and in case of watery holes conventional packaged slurry/emulsions are being used. In order to avail the low density characteristics of the ANFO, some limestone mines have also used Saw Dust and Rice Husk along with ANFO. A number of field trials have been undertaken to explore the suitability of mixing rice-husk and saw dust with ANFO. Presently, about 10% of rice husk/saw dust is being used only to expand the explosive column. The main technical consideration for the use of saw dust/rice husk, has been to reduce the final density and increase the occupancy of explosive in the blast-hole. This not only lowers the detonation pressure in the blast holes, but also reduces cost of explosive without compromising on the fragmentation quality. Besides, with sleeping of the charge there is no substantial fall in the blast quality.

The safety record of the coal-mining industry, both anthracite and bituminous, in 1966 was improved over that of 1965 in all general measures of injury experience. The improvement was more pronounced in the anthracite industry. The total of 10,679 disabling work injuries comprised 233 fatal and 10,466 nonfatal injuries, 26 and 692 fewer, respectively, than in 1965. The number of fatalities in 1966 was the lowest annual total since complete records were started in 1910. Similarly, the number of nonfatal injuries in 1966 was lower than in any year since 1930 when such data were first collected.

In an underground mine operated with panel caving and subjected to high stresses, geotechnical events such as collapses or rock bursts are fairly recurrent. Both situations can involve risks for people, considerable production losses and increasing operational costs.This paper discusses an operational methodology for the recovery of the undercutting front carried out at El Teniente mine, which uses panel cave mining with post-undercutting, after the occurrence of severe damage due to a seismic cluster. The main objective of the recovery of the undercutting front is to prevent the spread of the collapse to the production level, risking the operational continuity. The methodology is the result of repairs that were carried out in the year 2014 at the North Reserves sector from El Teniente mine. Its characteristics are an undercutting front of almost 1000 m long, with the presence of relevant structures and faults, high stresses and high seismic activity.The practical implementation of the proposed methodology was successful since it prevented the spread of the damage, completely recovered the undercutting front and avoided production losses during the execution of the repairs. Also, considering the origin of the damage and the operations associated to the subsequent recovery of the undercutting front, in this paper we discuss the main control variables to be measured. This paper aims to summarise the discovery of the QTS Central resource, a previously unidentified +1 Mt inferred resource that lies between two major CSA resource systems.The 1.7 Mt at 5.76 per cent Cu, QTS Central ore system represents 1/6th of the CSA mineral resource and was discovered in 2014 based on the accumulation of historic exploration records dating back to 1989.The CSA deposit consists of five ore systems hosted within turbidite-derived siltstones (CSA Siltstone) and lesser sandstones (five per cent) of the Devonian Amphitheatre Group. The host sediments strike approximately north–south with a steep westerly dip and exhibit a well-developed east dipping cleavage. Most CSA mineralisation is hosted within dilation zones at the intersection of cross-cutting structures and is interpreted as epigenetic in origin.Alteration and weak mineralisation, up plunge to the reported QTS Central mineral resource, was initially detected in 1990 during a downhole electromagnetic conductivity (EM) study, where one hole indicated an off-hole conductor, later tested with four diamond holes. One of these diamond holes intersected 3 m at 7.5 per cent Cu at 200 m. Development of the 9070 Subway drive in 2005/2006, linked the QTS North and QTS South workings and intersected structures interpreted to host QTS Central mineralisation. Subsequent drilling proximal to the 9070 Subway in 2007 identified an up plunge extension to the QTS Central zone (UDD07152: 1.8 m at 6.3 per cent Cu from 10.7 m). Work on QTS Central was largely forgotten until 2012 when the mining of a 450 m infrastructure drive provided a platform to test the anomalous grades. In December 2013, drill hole UDD13055A intersected 20.9 m at 7.2 per cent Cu from 378 m. By the end of 2014, the QTS Central inferred resource was 1.0 Mt at 6 per cent Cu and 18 g/t Ag (Hosken and Apaza, 2014). Late in 2016, further infill drilling occurred from two fronts to increase confidence in the QTS Central resource. The results of this drilling are expected late in 2017.The current interpretation indicates the QTS Central system consists of two main lenses hosted within closely bedded sandstones and siltstones. The sandstone in general is not mineralised, being heavily silicified, while the siltstone is mineralised and chloritised. The main mineralised lens is 75–200 m along strike and 450 m high. Massive sulfide feeder structures lie at the core of the two main lenses, although the characteristics of the QTS Central system tend toward the mineralisation being more chlorite-rich than in QTS North and QTS South.CITATION:Apaza, E and Neumayr, R, 2017. One copper Isasmelt furnace has been operated in Xstrata Copper at Mount Isa in Australia since 1992. A thermodynamic model and computer program, CuModel, has been developed to model the distribution behaviors of Cu, Fe, S, O, Ni, Co, Sn, Pb, Zn, As, Sb, Bi, Au and Ag, copper loss in the slag, and heat balance in copper smelting process, matte converting process and copper continuous smelting process. The thermodynamic model has been used to model the key parameters in the control of the copper Isasmelt furnace. The effects of the process parameters on the control of the copper Isasmelt furnace have been predicted and discussed. These process parameters include SiO2/Fe, matte grade, coal, temperature, spec air of feed, oxygen enrichment, and MgO contents in slag.

Due to environmental concerns in urban construction, many typically simple projects become very complex or feasibly impossible. The introduction of relatively new concepts has redefined "impossible", again simplifying these projects and making them "possible". Case Study One covers the use of Pressed-in Tubular Piles on portions of the Long Island Expressway in Queens, New York. Innovations in the design, material and installation method solved many typically inherent problems on projects of this type and resulted in cantilevered walls that supported a 35ft (10.668m) excavation. Design predictions and actual measured deflections of this wall were within millimeters. Case Study Two covers the use of Pressed-in Tubular Piles on portions of the Hodogaya Bypass in Yokohama, Japan. Innovations in equipment development allowed for a cantilevered retaining wall to be constructed without affecting the adjacent right-of-way, dramatic reduction of the overall construction duration and installation of tubular piles in soils with SPT N values greater than 160.

This presentation describes a major modernization project at the Geco concentrator. The objectives of the program were to replace obsolete flotation equipment and upgrade process controls.Noranda Minerals Inc. — Gecc Division is located at Manitouwadge in Northern Ontario. The community is situated north of Lake Superior approximately equidistant from Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie.Milling operations began in September, 1957. The mill processes a complex base metal ore by differential flotation techniques to produce copper, lead and zinc concentrates. To date some 43 million tons have been milled, qualifying Geco as a rather major base metal deposit.II. BACKGROUND:The Geco concentrator was designed and constructed in the mid 50's. A number of features specific to a concentrator of that vintage provided the justification for the modernization efforts described herein.Firstly, the mill was constructed without any instrumentation, not even pneumatic controls. Solid state electronics, computers and related instrumentation were unheard of, or rather primitive by today's standards.Secondly, some of the major equipment, in particular the flotation equipment, did not compare favourably to that in use today. MacIntosh flotation machines (more commonly known as Mac cells) were installed at Geco. These cells were prevalent in a number of concentrators built by Noranda, including Quemont Mining Corporation Limited, Gaspe Copper Mines Limited and Noranda — Horne Division. The Mac cells were used for copper and zinc rougher and scavenger operations. Some units were also installed for a pyrite recovery circuit that was never operated. In total, 104 Mac cells were installed in the main flotation area of the concentrator.
