Over the last decade more than 62 miles (100 km) of civil transport tunnels were constructed in Sydney, Australia, using the sequential excavation method (SEM). The WestConnex motorway tunnels, each stage of which used over 20 roadheaders to excavate up to 40 tunnel headings, had numerous caverns up to 100 feet (30 m) wide and 82 feet (25 m) high. SEM tunnels in North America typically have far fewer active headings. This paper examines the differences in scope and risk allocation for construction phase services, including comparison of the Permit to Tunnel (PTT) process in Australia and the Required Excavation and Support process in North America.

Face and pillar bursts, bumps and bounces are violent failures that occur in underground coal mines in response to a complicated interplay of face and pillar geometry, seam depth, coal properties and interactions between roof, seam and floor strata. Additional complications arise from the presence of gas, mainly methane, and associated pressure and flow that vary with time and are further influenced by the rate of face advance. Where gas plays a dominant role, the term outburst is often used; where stress concentration is primary, terms such as burst, bump or bounce may be used. Hargraves [1983] presents an often cited review of outburst phenomena with emphasis on Australian conditions. Beamish and Crosdale [1998] indicate outbursts have occurred for over a hundred years and present tabulations of outburst numbers in major coal basins throughout the world. A central consideration is the rate of depressurization that occurs in the course of mining. Outbursts are not limited to coal seams and adjacent strata; they also occur in salt and potash mines [Molinda et al 1988]. Stress concentration and gas pressure act in consort, so the combined action is important to understanding the mechanics of bursts or outbursts and to the development of measures to reduce the associated hazard. Gas flow is a complicated phenomenon associated with diffusion of gas from micro-pores and the flow of gas along cleats. Laboratory measurements indicate both are dependent on stress and pressure [Harpalani and Ouyang 1998]. Moreover, gas permeability in porous media is often many times water permeability [Klinkenberg 1941]. However, there is also evidence that gas and water permeability are similar at elevated stress and follow Darcy?s law [Dabous et al]. Gas flow is also of importance to mine ventilation. Price et al [1973] in cooperation with personnel of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines developed finite difference models to estimate methane emission in mines in the Pocahontas No. 3 and Pittsburg seams using a premining pressure of 4.69 MPa (680 psi) and Darcy's law implying laminar flow. However, the effects of stress were not taken into account. In this regard, mine measurements of permeability are usually based on Darcy?s law [Peide 1990]. Early models of gas flow with stress effects were one-dimensional in space and time (x,t) and were developed with the goal of estimating the gas pressure profile from the face into the seam as time passed [Schlanger and Paterson 1987, Zou and Yu, 1999]. A zone of high permeability adjacent to the mining face was recognized in these early models. Later models based on the popular finite element method allowed two spatial dimensions (x,y) and variation in time (t) and for coal seam heterogeneity [Tang et al, 2002]. Zhu et al [2007] formulated a set of nonlinear equations involving a complicated stress-pressure-permeability relationship for application to coal seam gas flow and concluded the coupling was important but failure of coal should also be considered. Wold et al [2008] used a hybrid finite difference - finite element model interleaved with a reservoir simulation model to study outbursts based on extensive mine and laboratory measurements. An important feature of the modeling was the use of spatially variable material properties and Monte Carlo simulation to obtain quantitative estimates of outburst conditions and probabilities. Connell [2009] used the same reservoir simulation model as Wold but used the popular finite difference code FLAC3D for hydro-mechanical responses to evaluate two permeability relationships, one depending on porosity and the other on stress, and concluded that permeability changes with gas production were more complex than computed by either permeability model. Gadde [2010] in an integrated laboratory and field study of coal pillar strength explored the effect of spatial variability and concluded that design based on average strength was acceptable in some circumstances, although gas pressure was not an issue. Liu et al [2011] also applied a FLAC code to analyze two-dimensional gas flow and deformation of layered but homogeneous strata in a Chinese coal mine using a strain-softening model and concluded that damage and gas pressure were important to strata safety relative to the case without gas.

Today?s modern mining operations have literally dozens of applications and systems generating data whose information very often, are not crossed or centralized for operational decisions. In remote locations, the information and situation awareness is typically limited to the location itself. In addition, access to that information is limited to a small, select group of personnel that have received training on how to interpret the results. When the situation affects another area of the mine then information is relayed to the applicable areas involved. Few workers have time to analyze the situation thoroughly, to see how it affects the mines symbiotic relationship within all areas of production. If the capability to correlate and measure events and situations that affect your overall key performance indicators are not in place, the opportunity to identify process improvement becomes more difficult.

An assessment of potential groundwater movement beneath the tailing impoundment at the Red Dog Mine was performed, and has indicated a unique aquifer situation within sub-permafrost groundwater at the site. The aquifer was shown to be isolated from both vertical recharge and a real discharge, and is characterized as a virtually no-flow system. The permafrost resulted in a deep aquifer with high tidal efficiency, meaning that variable surface loads are easily transmitted to the fluid. The tidal efficiency has been characterized through analysis of water level fluctuations that respond to earth tides, barometric pressure loads, and loading from the pond.

This article presents a novel design, called the Climax, High Capacity Processor (HCP), for pre-combustion cleaning of coal. This design is particularly suitable for the plant capacities of 400 ~ 660 TPH. The HCP is different from the conventional designs with an equivalent throughput in three major aspects: 1) the use of one large capacity HM cyclone to separate coarse and intermediate raw coal in a single circuit; 2) the elimination of the conventional secondary magnetics recovery system by use of the high efficiency Climax, magnetic separators; 3) the use of "single line" piping with a minimum requirement of ancillary devices. In comparison with conventional designs with similar capacity, the HCP plant costs much less in capital investment, operation and maintenance.

The rapid development of the global alumina and aluminum industry is straight coupled with the demands and the needs of these materials. Nowadays, the only well-known accessible resources to produce alumina and aluminum are bauxite ores. But bauxite ores are limited, and the remaining exploitable reserves do not have high contents in alumina. In countries where there is little or no bauxite reserves or where the recovery of existing bauxite ores to produce alumina with the Bayer process are not economic, alternative resources for alumina have been explored. The most attractive resources for replacing bauxites are aluminosilicate clay minerals and coal fly ash. The important processes developed for the recovery of alumina from these sources are acid leaching and alkaline leaching processes. The acid leaching is known as the most efficient in which thermal and mechanical activation are included for improving the performance of the process. The objective of this review is to give a comprehensive insight on the production of the alumina from thermally or mechanically activated clays and coal fly ash by hydrochloric, sulfuric, and nitric acid leaching processes.

The use of refuge chambers for use in handling underground emergencies is an issue of topical relevance within the US mining industry. Chamber design is of importance to meet some new safety requirements of US federal and some state government mine regulations. A review has been undertaken of a steel mine refuge chamber design to predict what will be internal temperature within the chamber over an extended period with miners present? The design has been examined for the situation when the chamber is sited in still mine air. Spreadsheets have been developed to allow various design assumptions to be tested. The evaluation has been undertaken using thermodynamic heat transfer models with some assumptions specified to produce a model of appropriate simplicity but with adequate degree of accuracy. Under normal still air conditions it can be seen that internal chamber conditions rise quickly to often arduous conditions. There will always be quite a few assumptions necessary in complex heat transfer process evaluations. Some important refuge chamber design parameters are: ? External surface area of the chamber, its wall thickness and construction. ? Metabolic heat generated and number of persons making use of the chamber. ? The temperature of the external mine atmosphere to the chamber over the year and the influence of geothermal gradient on temperature at depth. ? The maximum internal chamber Apparent Temperature considered safe. ? The distance inside the underground mine and adjacent ventilation conditions.

INTRODUCTION A number of tunnels supported and permanently lined by steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) have been built in North America in the 1980s. The material is more economical than, and technically equal or superior to, conventional shotcrete using wire mesh. The design and construction of SFRS-lined tunnels is straightforward, and only a few new design principles, laboratory tests or construction equipment modifications appear necessary in order to use this material. Modern tunnel Contractors may use cyclic drill-and-blast methods on some tunnels, with intermittent shotcreting as part of an orderly cycle. The Dry Mix method is most suitable for cyclic, intermittent, relatively small-scale shotcreting. However, modern Contractors excavating tunnels continuously using large long Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) or Roadheaders may prefer Wet Mix shotcreting on a mass production basis. In either case, the use of steel-fiber-rein¬forced shotcrete (SFRS) promotes the rapid and economical excavation of tunnels. The addition of microsilica will improve SFRS properties and reduce rebound, and is expected to become standard practice with SFRS in North America, as it now is in Scandinavia. HISTORICAL REVIEW Steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) at the present time (1985) is essentially conventional shotcrete with straight or deformed steel fibers added, and in general SFRS for tunnel linings encounters the same problems that conventional shotcrete does. All aspects of precious metals processing were featured at a symposium held Oct. 3-6, 2007, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Although billed as "Precious Metals Processing: Advances in Primary and Secondary Operations," the symposium also looked at economic, regulatory and environmental issues affecting the precious metals industry. The symposium was sponsored by SME; The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); and the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI). It included workshops, technical presentations, guest speakers and social activities. Mining industry management, process engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, metals marketers, academics and others involved in the precious metals industry attended the conference. Needless to say, with gold nearing $25.721g ($800/oz) and platinum pushing $41.801g ($1,300/oz) at the time of the meeting, the mood among the attendees could not have been more positive. The symposium was privileged to have Father Ernest S. Sweeney, professor of Latin American History at Loyola Marymount University, as a guest speaker. Sweeney, a Jesuit priest, provided a colorful account of the history of mining in Arizona and the surrounding region of North America (Fig. 1). He described the importance of the mining industry and said, "To go down into the bowels of the earth to extract its riches for the benefit of all of us is an awesome task deserving our sincere respect and gratitude." However, he warned the industry that: "The ever increasing de¬mands on the mining community for the protection of the environment calls for endless efforts to maintain ethical standards in a business filled with risk, uncertainty and frustrations." Sweeney noted that the Spanish conquest of the Americas was driven by the three fundamental motives of "God, glory and gold." He noted that gold was the basic, most powerful driving force of the conquest and occupation of the Spanish empire. The first European to explore Arizona was the Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza. He came to Arizona in 1539 in search of the fabled Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola. Sweeny noted that Spanish explorers were consumed, as Cortes himself described it, "with a burning fever that only gold could cure." Sweeney told the story of some of these early explorers, including Francisco Vázquez de Coronado who "mounted an expedition in pursuit of gold and rich empires to conquer." Coronado passed through Arizona and discovered the Grand Canyon. "Coronado returned to Mexico exhausted, bankrupt and disillusioned, but with a wealth of new knowledge of the borderlands of the Spanish empire," said Sweeney. He then described the colorful history of early gold, silver and copper exploration and mining in Arizona, including the famous tale of the Lost Dutchman's Mine. With the Working Shafts and Starter Tunnel under way, it became apparent this 4.7-mile, 19-foot diameter wet weather tunnel was going to live up to its name. The shaft’s pre-excavation grouting was completed, and ground water inflows were slowing project progress. As the tunnel drive was approaching 50% complete a cooperative effort was underway between the owner, engineer, and contractor to raise the base of the Retrieval Shaft by 65 feet to avoid ground water infiltration construction challenges. The tunnel alignment needed to be raised in kind. The project was behind schedule and rethinking the cast-in-place adit work was next on the agenda due to the very wet environment in the tunnel. The race was on to finish the project within the owner’s time constraints while completing multiple redesign aspects of the tunnel alignment and associated adit construction. This paper will evaluate original design criteria and actual in-route design modifications and change management to meet the owner’s just-in-time schedule needs.

In the drive for faster development advance rates, railbound systems can be advantageous, in the right application. Skanska BS, the contractor to mine-owner VSK Mining, is driving an adit access deep into the Volouské Urchy Mountain in Slovakia to access the Gemerská Poloma talc deposit, some 70 km (43 miles) west of Ko?ice, the economic and cultural center of eastern Slovakia. Skanska began driving the Stolna Elisabeth drift in February 2007, extending 25 kg/m (50 lb/yd) rails (with 750 mm or 30 in. between sleepers) into the mountain to provide the main haulage to bring talc ore and waste out of the new mine once it gets into production. It will also be used for personnel transport, and is now almost complete. As a second egress and for ventilation, a 2.5-m- (8.2-ft-) diameter shaft of about 300-m (984-ft) depth will be sunk from surface down into the orebody. Stolna Elisabeth is a 4.2-km- (2.6-mile-) long drift mined at a cross section of some 11 m2 (118 sq ft). The finished profile is 3.2-m- (10.5-ft-) wide by 3.6-m- (11.8-ft-) high. It has been developed on a very slight incline so that water runs down it to the portal. The portal is 450 m (1,476 ft) above sea level and the end of the tunnel is 475 m (1,558 ft) above sea level. Much of the rock through which it has been developed is magnesite with a compressive strength of 150 MPA. The drilling jumbo is an Atlas Copco twin-boom Boomer 282 Raildrill drilling 42- to 45-mm- (1.6- to 1.7-in.-) diameter holes to a maximum length of 2.5 m (8.2 ft), depending on ground conditions. This is a drill jumbo that Skanska has used successfully on a number of projects during its life. The condition of the rock through which this drift has been driven is extremely variable. Five classifications of A1 and A2 and B1, B2 and [ ] B3, where A1 is the most competent rock and B3 is the worst, have been established. The amount of support used, of which more later is determined by the classification of ground conditions. At the time of the author?s visit, the project it was about 40 days ahead of schedule, thanks to high advance rates. For instance 6 m/day (20 ft/d) was the plan for the advance to be achieved in B1 rock, but sometimes the crews have achieved 8 m/day (26 ft/d) ? which is the average for the whole project ? in those conditions. In A1 the best advance rate achieved is 12 m/day (39 ft/d). The loading unit is a Häggloader 9HR-B on crawler tracks with a pony track to run on the rails. This allows the unit to be towed up and down the drift along the rails. To load from the face, the Häggloader lowers the foot of its onboard conveyor system to the floor and the backhoe pushes material on to it. This digging arm-conveyor combination produces uninterrupted, optimal volume loading of the haulage unit, without spill ? a technique offering load capacities as high as 180 m3/h (6,356 cu ft/hour). The Pipeline ore body was discovered in March 1991. The construction of the new mine and mill did not start until early March of 1996. Upon completion of permitting and corporate project approval, the 289 million USD project was “fast tracked”. The commissioning began 11 months after start of construction and the project ended 40 million USD under the budget figure. The objective of this paper is to review and highlight the Pipeline Project history from discovery, design, lawsuits, permitting, and re-design through to current - 1998operating practices. Particular emphasis will review the process design, design mistakes, and design successes. The paper will review project history, feasibility, design concepts, operator training, construction, financial and the current operation. Additional discussion will review what design features worked and which did not work within the process plant.

Development of a three-dimensional mine visualization model for a section of the mine is addressed first. Discontinuity orientation and location information was taken from this visualization model for use in slope stability analyses. Estimated shear strength properties of discontinuities and mechanical properties of intact rock from the rock mass samples obtained from the mine are discussed next. The paper is then focused on the calculated maximum safe slope angles based on the performed kinematic and block theory analyses using the mapped discontinuities at the mine. Finally, the effects of water that exist in the rock mass, tension cracks, slope face inclination, overall wedge height and double benching on factor of safety of wedge stability are illustrated through limit equilibrium slope stability analyses.

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) has recently completed design for the Bi-County Water Tunnel Project. The project will include a 10-foot diameter, 5.3-mile long hard rock tunnel located within the Piedmont Physiographic Province in Montgomery County, Maryland. The rock formations present along the alignment are comprised of igneous and metamorphic lithologies. This paper presents the steps taken to characterize the complex geology along the tunnel alignment into a single ?Engineering Unit? based upon the intact rock and rock mass properties. The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system is planned to be used as the basis for dividing the ground into three ?Excavation and Support? classes. This RMR approach was selected to establish contractual baselines as presented in the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) and is intended to facilitate management of the ground support characterization during construction.

The minerals industry consumes billions of dollars in raw materials, equipment, tools, services and chemicals. The industry, though, has turned overmuch of the research and development (R&D) for these products to manufacturers and suppliers. Now the industry and its suppliers must decide how much R&D the mining industry should be responsible for and what role the suppliers should play. Promoting R&D As a result of the current environment in the mining and minerals industry, there has been a substantial decrease in R&D. Depressed prices, stagnant growth, cost cutting and rationalization are evident.

The health of the industrial minerals industry appears to be improving year by year. In fact, preliminary information suggests that only three commodities (asbestos, bromine, and sulfur-other) failed to show a production gain in 1984 over 1983. In 1983, 10 commodities failed to post gains and six remained constant. The total value of industrial mineral production in 1984 was $16.7 billion, up $1.4 billion from 1983. Cement, clays, gypsum, and crushed stone production increased. Since these are used in housing and construction, this suggests these industries are moving out of their recent doldrums. Barite and clay production also improved in 1984. Local US barite production, however, still has a long way to go to attain the 1981 high of 2.6 Mt (2.9 million st). Barite imports remain high. But they are not as high as the 1982 importation of 2 Mt (2.3 million st). Bentonite production in 1984 increased 20% in volume and 25% in value over the previous year. This suggests improvement in the drilling industry and an increase in demand for iron ore pelletizing grades. All in all, the industrial mineral industry is alive and well. And it shows signs of great improvement in the next few years. Comingling filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailingsdominated mixture is a mine waste management strategy that has the potential to create geotechnically and geochemically stable landforms. Potentially acid-generating (PAG) waste rock can be sequestered within a filtered tailings matrix to enhance water retention and decrease hydraulic conductivity relative to a waste rock pile, potentially minimizing acid rock drainage (ARD). Enhanced water retention can reduce oxygen ingress limiting oxidation and resultant acid generation. Reduced hydraulic conductivity can slow inward percolation and outward drainage. In dry climates, the tailings matrix can hold precipitation near the ground surface accessible to evaporation and transpiration, thereby decreasing percolation. This paper presents an evaluation of comingled filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailings-dominated mixture (termed GeoWaste herein) and illustrates that ARD can be reduced under field conditions in a subtropical–highland climate.

The Mantos Blancos copper-silver district, a major copper-producing area since 1961, is located on the Tropic of Capricorn about 45 kilometers northeast of the northern Chile port city of Antofagasta, as shown in Figure 1. Copper oxide minerals occurring as atacamite (Cu C1(OH)3) and chrysocolla (copper silicate-hydrate) were discovered in the district in the early 1900's (Knobler and Joseph, 1962). The mine is situated in the northern Atacama Desert, one of the most arid regions on earth, and presently receives less than 1 cm per year of precipitation. The extreme aridity of the Atacama Desert is thought to have prevailed since at least Middle Miocene time (Mortimer et al., 1978) when development of important supervene copper enrichment was slowed in many areas of northern Chile (e.g., Chuquicamata, Exotica). Despite the paucity of precipitation, landform development is mature, with large alluvial fans and alluvial-filled valleys covering much of the region. In addition, the aridity and presence of salts have led to the formation of a sub-surface cementing of alluvium and colluvium by halite-rich caliche ranging from a few centimeters to over 3 meters in thickness. These factors, resulting in poor outcrop exposure, make even reconnaissance mapping difficult.
