Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) is one of the most serious and persistent pollution problems facing today's mining industry. ARD is formed when pyrite (FeS) is exposed to natural weathering conditions. Pyrite weathering, formally the oxidation and hydrolysis of pyrite, leads to the generation of soluble, hydrous iron sulfa-salts and the production of acid in the form of H+. The resulting effluent is water that is characterized by high levels of iron (and any other metal contained in the rock undergoing weathering) as well as high concentrations of sulfate and a low pH (acid). Rocky Mountain Remediation Services, L.L.C., has developed a patents pending Envirobond'™ product, Envirobond™ ARD, to treat acid rock drainage. Treating pyrite with Envirobond™ ARD inhibits the oxidation and hydrolysis of pyrite thus curtailing the pyrite oxidation cycle.

Mining project investment concerns the installation of mine capacity for the purpose of generating a stream of future economic benefits. In order to make this type of investment decision, the optimum specifications for the project must first be determined. Then, the economic justification of the investment tin be evaluated based on these specifications. Economic evaluation to guide mining project investment decisions is based on a proposed plan for mining the deposit over its operational life. If single point estimates are made of deposit characteristics and environmental parameters* as the basis for assessing a future stream of economic benefits associated with the investment, a future mining-plan can be optimally fitted to these estimates and, to the extent that such estimates are actually realized, this plan will retain optimality.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion widens the existing I-64 four-lane bridge-tunnel corridor to eight lanes through construction of two parallel tunnels, interstate widening, and bridge expansions. The design-build contract was awarded to Hampton Roads Connector Partners with HDR and Mott MacDonald retained as lead designers in a Design Joint Venture. This paper will highlight some of the e challenges related to the design of the twin bored tunnels from spaceproong, tunnel enabling wors, segmental lining design and durability considerations.

INTRODUCTION Investigations of radon and radon daughter concentrations in Swedish [non-uranium] mines started in the late 1960's. The first screening measurements showed that the average annual exposure to radon and radon daughter products was 4.7 WLM. The main reason for high radon and radon daughter concentrations was inefficient ventilation and radonrich water entering the mine. In the radon regulations worked out later it was stated that no miner should be exposed to more than 60 000 pCi h/1 equilibrium equivalent concentration of radon annual exposure, corresponding to 3.6 WLM. Now, 1981 the situation has changed considerably. From the average annual exposure of 4.7 WLM in 1970 it is now only 0.7 WLM. Sweden has up to now had only one [uranium] mine and the work there has only been investigative. However, there are plans for a commercial uranium mine in another part of Sweden. The radon problems in these mines are widely different depending on the mineralogy. NON-URANIUM MINES The radiation problems in Swedish mines were not recognised until the late 60's. The first radon and radon daughter measurements were made in some sulphide ore mines in 1967 (1). The radon and radon daughter concentrations were surprisingly high for non-uranium mines. In order to have a complete picture of the radon situation in Swedish mines the National Institute of Radiation Protection (NIRP) decided to make measurements in all, at that time about 60 mines (2). To get results as fast as possible measurements on radon gas seemed most appropriate to start with. Sampling was made by mailing a number of evacuated 4.8 litre conventional propane containers from NIRP to each mine. The containers were then opened at the place of interest. After sampling the containers were sealed and then mailed back to the institute for measurement. The measurements were made in ionization chambers. This method only gave the radon concentration and the radon daughter concentration was estimated by multiplying the radon concentration by an assumed equilibrium factor. The equilibrium factor is defined as the ratio of the total potential alpha energy for the given daughter concentration to the total potential alpha energy of the daughters if they are in equilibrium with the given radon concentration. The results of this first preliminary survey indicated that a great many of the Swedish miners probably had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. As the radiation exposure in non-uranium mines was not regulated in either the Swedish Radiation Protection Act or the Swedish Labour Protection Act work was started on special radon regulations. A lung cancer mortality study was also started. To check the results of the first survey and to get experience and knowledge of radon problems in mines, it was decided that personnel from the NIRP should visit each mine for a detailed investigation of radon and radon daughter concentrations starting with the ones with the highest radon concentrations. The main reasons for these so-called "basic measurements" were: 1. To estimate the doses received by Swedish miners 2. To find the sources of the high radon and radon daughter concentrations 3. To find appropriate counter-measures 4. To determine the most typical equilibrium factor for each mine. Unlike most uranium mines the reason for high radon concentrations in non-uranium mines is seldom the occurrence of highly radioactive minerals. The main sources were found to be waste-rock and radon-rich water. In order to filter and warm up the inlet air, especially in winter time, it was very common at that time to suck the air through broken wasterock. By doing so the air was contaminated with radon from the waste-rock and radon-rich water in it. It is noteworthy that the radium and uranium concentration in the waste-rock is relatively low. The uranium concentration is only of the order of 15 - 20 ppm. The action to prevent this contamination of the inlet air was to change the direction of the ventilation and in the case of radon-rich water entering the mine the action was to prevent the air coming into contact with the water. The first calculation of the radon daughter exposure of Swedish miners was based on radon gas measurements. The radon daughter concentration was estimated by using an assumed equilibrium factor of 0.5. Later when the mines were visited by institute staff it was possible to compare the assumed equilibrium factor with the measured ones. It was found that the factor varied from 0.15 at the air inlet to 1.0 at the air outlet and the average equilibrium factor on workplaces for almost all mines was between 0.4 and 0.6. The result of the exposure calculation in 1970 showed that more than 40 % of the miners had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. Remote sensing is being tested for its ability to identify the severity of impact on streams that are subjected to contaminated mine drainage (CMD) in the Southern Anthracite Coalfield of Pennsylvania. Airborne digital multispectral video images of acidic and near-neutral CMD are being compared with field spectra, water chemistry, mineralogy, and microbiology. Spectral differences in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum are caused by the presence of schwertmannite in the acidic precipitates and ferrihydrite in the near- neutral precipitates. The acidic CMD averages 1,500 mg/L sulfate and has bacteria coated with schwertmannite; the near-neutral CMD averages 87 mg/L sulfate and has bacteria coated with ferrihydrite.

The surface chemical sites on several fillers (quartz, feldspar, calcite and granite) were studied by the adsorption of well defined acid and basic probe molecules (benzoic acid, benzyl alcohol, ethyl benzoate, pyridine and benzyl amine) from cyclohexane. The results provided a wide variation of adsorption data, emphasizing the extensive range of site heterogeneity on the filler surfaces. In addition, it was shown that the acidic probes were strongly adsorbed on all of the minerals, thus indicating that the basic surface sites dominate the acidic ones. Also, through FTIR studies with vapor-phase probes adsorbed on orthoclase, it was possible to identify the nature of specific sites and the type of bonding occurring between the filler surface and the probe molecule. These types of surface analytical techniques could give useful information for predicting the adsorption functional groups on dispersants, dyes, thickeners, etc. and could lead to enhanced interfacial bonding between the filler and the matrix.

Gold assays from production blastholes in the Mercur Hill Pit were used to delineate known ore zones and to determine how well previous exploration drilling defined these zones. The most important factors causing inadequate ore zone definition were: 1) inappropriate location of drill holes relative to the ore zones, 2) presence of stopes from previous mining, 3) sampling and assaying errors, and 4) smoothing of the ore zone boundaries during ore reserve estimation. Infill drilling strategies were evaluated to determine the efficiency with which a given drill pattern defined the known ore zones. A drilling strategy was developed which improved ore zone delineation when compared to techniques which maintained uniform drill spacing.

Viscosities of two industrial lead blast furnace slags have been experimentally determined as functions of composition and temperature. A Brookfield viscometer with alumina rods and crucibles were used. Experiments were carried out between 1200 and 1573 K in an argon atmosphere with up to 5% addition of FeO, MgO, and SiO2 to the slags. Results showed that 1) the viscosities of two slags decreased with increase in temperature; 2) addition of FeO decreased the slag viscosities; and 3) addition of MgO and SiO2 increased the slag viscosities. Use of the above slag compositions with the addition of FeO is recommended for successful lead smelter operation.

Experiment shows that the microbial degradation of pyrite does not necessarily proceed stoichiometrically. Under some conditions sulfur is oxidized preferentially leaving something approaching iron in composition; under others, the pyrite is converted almost to elemental sulfur. A kinetic model for the process based on three elementary biochemical reactions can explain these observations. The diffusion of sulfur along grain boundaries and dislocations in the solid pyrite uncouples the oxidation rates of sulfur and iron from the requirements of stoichiometry. This mechanism also explains qualitatively why bacteria adsorb preferentially at dislocation sites on pyrite surfaces, why they form "pits" at these sites, and why amorphous pyrite is more readily degraded than pure crystals. Past surface-mining operations in Appalachia primarily followed mountain con-tours. It is estimated that about 18,000 mi. of highwalls are exposed throughout Appalachia. An evaluation procedure for determining the secondary mining potential (SMP) of these highwalls has been proposed. Sixteen parameters affecting the SMP were isolated. These are grouped in four major categories: geologic conditions, existing infrastructure, site conditions, and environmental conditions. The parameters were then ranked by their impact on SMP and assigned weighting factors. A simple mathematical procedure yields an SMP number (0 < SMP < 100), which may then be used to compare alternative sites and technologies. Determination of limits and ranges while grouping data was aided by field visits to over 40 exposed highwalls in Eastern Kentucky. An interactive program has been developed to rapidly evaluate the SMP for pre-mined sites. The mathematical procedure estimates the relative potential (i.e., techno-logical feasibility) for remining for three predominant secondary mining methods: augering, Hi-wall mining, and underground mining. Other secondary mining methods are briefly reviewed and compared.

Introduction The incentives for developing a distributed form of the comminution model include: • for describing the heterogeneous comminution behavior of multiphase mineral systems (i.e. realistic ore bodies, such as complex sulfide ores consisting of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and siliceous minerals) and •for generating, for various locked and free particles, in situ, microscopic, breakage behavior such as the mode of fracture (intergranular vs. transgranular), the relative rates of breakage and the breakage distribution. However, the computational difficulty and the effort made in estimating a large number of parameters (Andrews and Mika, 1975; Wiegel, 1976; Herbst et al., 1985, 1988) do not justify the utility of this approach. Also, obtaining the results experimentally is very tedious and time consuming if using this approach. Although recent work in this area (Choi, Adel and Yoon, 1987; Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990) showed good results for liberated particles, the quality of the estimation and prediction was poor for locked particles. Attributing this to the complex breakage behavior of locked particles, it was concluded that additional constraints, and possibly modification in the breakage distribution functional form for locked particles, were necessary. However, further mathematical analysis revealed that the method previously used was in error. The purpose of this technical note is to present the correct solution methodology used in solving the general model equations of a multicomponent mineral system containing multiple classes of locked particles. Previous work and connection The general form of the comprehensive, distributed-component comminution model has been described as (Herbst et al., 1985) [d (m (0) -[ I - B ] S_ m(t) = A m(t) (1)] where [A] is the fundamental matrix/state companion matrix, commonly referred to, in the comminution literature, as the "mill matrix." Note that for a distributed-component comminution model, this is a full, general, real matrix, unlike a lower triangular matrix for a simple grinding model or a lumped-binary grinding model with one locked-particle class (Herbst et al., 1985, 1988). Also note that all of the underlined letters refer to matrices. Herbst et al. addressed the difficulty in arriving at a closed form of the analytical solution of Eq. (1) via similarity transformation [IT J inv (T)]]. This difficulty occurs for several reasons: •[A], as a general real matrix, may have complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors. •More importantly, there is no guarantee that a set of eigenvectors of [A] will turn out to be independent. An attempt was made to solve this problem by implementing a decomposition method. With this technique, the mill matrix was decomposed into a sum of lower and upper triangular matrices [(i.e., A = L + U)]. Then the solution was obtained using similarity transformation (Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990). Since 500 B.C. Mt. Penteli has been famous as white marble production site, which provided the birthstones for the construction of Athens Acropolis and Parthenon. The Aloula quarry belongs to ?Dionyssomarble S.A.?, a commercial and industrial marble company, which retreated after 1940. Disturbance in the site was minimal since then. In July of 1994 the reclamation started by a group of quarry workers from Paros, already familiar with traditional marble quarrying techniques, unchanged from antiquity to 1940. The project was complete in 1997. Our main objectives have been to show respect to the area and the art of people, to let nature guide our choices, to use only local stone as a construction means, to imitate the old construction rules and to turn the land use into amenity and civilization. Aloula quarry will become a site restored for amenity and civilisation, including ancient quarrying techniques. The restored quarry is already open to the public, though to a small number of visitors, and soon will become an amenity park and an open space museum of the ancient quarrying art.

Risk assessment, risk management, and engineering/economic feasibility analysis are presented as three effective, practical tools for decision making in the remediation of contaminated soils. Risk assessment is applied to evaluate the extent, magnitude and sources of contamination, to identify appropriate contaminants of concern (COCs). Risk management is then applied to identify the acceptable contaminant residual levels for the COCs. Finally, engineering/economic feasibility analysis is used to define the appropriate cost-effective remedial action and associated target contaminant action levels that will achieve the acceptable contaminant residual levels. A real site application of this decision making approach is presented. This site illustrates that through appropriate engineering, acceptable risk-based contaminant residual levels can be achieved with higher action levels.

The EMEW® cell has been developed to overcome a number of inherent limitations in conventional electrowinning technology, particularly the high cost and restricted process windows characteristic of conventional hardware. The EMEW technology has been widely demonstrated to achieve high performance for various metals under chemical conditions well outside the limits required for efficient operation of conventional cells. In particular application of the EMEW cell for recovery of silver offers significant operating and capital cost advantages over conventional Merrill Crowe technology used for cyanide based solutions. The cell also offers process advantages for direct silver recovery from nitric acid solutions. The performance of the EMEW® cell on silver cyanide solutions, producing high grade silver metal in a single step, is accomplished by providing a physical mechanism which presents metal ions to the cathode on a highly efficient and continuous basis. The simplicity of design and operation of the EMEW cell offers the following advantages for silver recovery from cyanide or nitrate based solutions: • High grade product in a single step. • Selective for silver over other metals in the electrolyte. • Wide operating concentration range (100,000 - 5ppm). • Ability of the cell to operated in a variety of acid or alkaline electrolytes. Laboratory tests showed that ozone can destroy free cyanide and weakly complexed cyanide (copper and zinc cyanides). The iron cyanide complexes were resilient to ozonation but they were effectively eliminated by precipitation with Fe (II) ions under controlled pH conditions. Tests carried out with effluents from a number of gold mills confirmed the results obtained previously in the laboratory. The industrial samples contained cyanide in the form of free cyanide and also complex copper, zinc and iron cyanides. Solutions that contained up to 184 mg/L total cyanide, after the ozone treatment analyzed only 2-3 mg/L dissociable cyanide and 50-90 mg/L CN(t) (accounted for by iron complexes). After precipitation with ferrous ions total cyanide was reduced below 1.5 mg/L. For most solutions ozone consumption ranges from 3 to 6 g per g of cyanide destroyed. However, certain impurities (such as SCN and S203 ), present in some effluents, increase ozone consumption and make it more difficult to reduce copper concentration to satisfactory levels.

Microprocessor-based balances are helping Keffler & Rose Coal Preparation Co. to test and ship coal faster than the competition. They provide a high level of accuracy in meeting Environmental Protection Agency standards and customer specifications .and help minimize "bad" coal. The combination of speed and accuracy has helped increase K&R&apos;s sales, while improving the company&apos;s reputation for meeting precise client requirements. The quality of coal that is assured by the company&apos;s testing-at an in-house lab using fast, precision weighing, and a computerized sulfur test-has assured K&R of a good price for its products. Recent EPA standards have strained the testing capabilities of coal suppliers. Companies involved with high-sulfur coal often use outside laboratory services that can take three to four days to report test results. Since the coal business moves much faster these days, some coal companies cannot afford that kind of time. Too much coal not up to specifications could be produced within a three or four day period. Keffler & Rose took a novel approach to this problem, installing its own in-house laboratory. The test situation immediately improved with this step. However, one bottleneck persisted for a time: the weight measurement procedure for ash, moisture, and energy content. The company first employed a mechanical balance that required time for setting up and taring. The balance provided readings on a conventional scale that was not very precise and allowed for error through subjective readings by the operator. The balance bottleneck was broken when K&R applied new technology to meet its needs: microprocessor-based weighing. The result has been a 75% reduction in weighing time and a sharp increase in accuracy. This has contributed to the test speed needed to keep up with 227-t/h production and precise K&R coal specs.

Little comprehensive information has been reported on the behavior of room-and-pillar mines. The objective of this paper is to present case data on mine failures in the Illinois basin for use in practice. Presented are results of an ongoing study and details on the site characteristics of cases where sags have developed on the surface. Site data are reported to show the geologic, mining, and sag conditions that existed. Sags mainly develop from pillar, floor, or pillar-floor failure. The character of the sags depends upon the type of mine failure as well as the overburden response.

Brazil is a country with continental dimensions. It hosts many different varieties of terranes and geological environments in its 8.5 million km2 (3.28 million sq miles). This mineral endowment has been important for the country&apos;s economic and social development process since the early colonial period, leaving Brazil with a legacy of almost 400 years of mining tradition. Mining in Brazil started in the early 17th century with diamond and gold discoveries. The made the country the leading producer of both for more than a century. This phase faded by the late 18th century when the alluvial deposits were depleted. It finally yielded to competing countries where technology and capital were being applied more efficiently. This period of mining dormancy lasted from the late 19th century until the first decades of the 20th century when Brazilian mining picked up. There was growing pressure on mineral resources by the affluence of the industrial society. The fast-growing demand resulting from the two world wars had brought the Brazilian mineral wealth back to the scene. This second Brazilian mineral boom made the country a leading producer of iron and manganese ore, quartz crystals and other strategic minerals. This expansion in Brazil&apos;s mining industry provided the basis for the country&apos;s industrialization process. This was led by the Brazilian steel and petroleum industries. Unfortunately, the thrust provided by this modern industrial basis was not properly used as a lever for further industrial development. The upstream industrialization process was not supported by the proper development of the raw materials supplying basis. The resulting industrial model was heavily dependent on imports of raw materials. It did not support the economic growth and faced fierce industrial competitiveness and sophistication that emerged with the postwar economic boom.

To date VMD have designed, built and supplied nine autoclaves to various mining companies in Canada, the US, and Papua New Guinea. Initially, completely fabricated and lead lined units were shipped. The logistics of Placer Dome's Porgera PNG Project necessitated fabricating and lead lining each autoclave in five sections for transportation to site, each piece weighing approximately 30.5 tonnes. Support equipment such as turning rolls, automatic and manual welding machines had to be set up on site to facilitate assembly of these units which was a challenge in planning. This on site erection programme was completed in three months.
