On 24th November, 1982, Mr L. W. P. van den Bosch was inducted as the President for 1982/1983 of the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa, which represents more than 40 scientific, professional, and technical bodies. Lynne Wilson Pearson van den Bosch was born at Senekal in the Orange Free State on 11th February, 1921. He was educated at the Hoer Volkskool, Heidelberg, and the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained the B.sc. degree in mining engineering.

A facility at the National Nuclear Research Centre, Pelindaba, for the calibration of gamma survey meters used in uranium-prospecting operations by P. D. TOENS, D.Sc. (Fellow), D. van ASt, M.Sc. (Visitor), and CONSTANCE M. VLEGGAAR, B.Se. (Visitor) Ground radiometric surveys in uranium prospecting have in the past suffered from two serious shortcomings. Owing to varying instrument sensitivity and the often arbitrary height at which readings are taken, it has been impossible to compare results obtained in different surveys and, moreover, to relate such readings to actual U30s concentrations. A set of calibration sources designed to overcome these problems has recently been constructed on the site of the National Nuclear Research Centre, Pelindaba. A discussion of the standards applied and the instrument calibration procedure is presented.

SYNOPSIS As a result of a test programme over a period of approximately ten years and a decision to extend the uranium plant, it was decided to design and erect the first full-scale Purlex Plant in the Republic of South Africa. The plant at Buffelsfontein G.M. Co. Ltd. was commissioned in August, 1968, and to date has produced results superior to those predicted in the original estimates. The capital expenditure was R678 000 for a plant capable of treating 1 600 gallons per minute of pregnant solution. Compared with the conventional resin ion exchange process, it has been found that the saving in production costs is 21 cents per pound U3O8 produced. The amine loss is 10 parts per million, which is equivalent to a total organic loss of 250 parts per million. The uranium loss in the raffinate is less than 0.001 g/l U3O8. The final product is of a high quality and it is probable that it is pure enough to convert to the fluoride directly.

This investigation aimed to simulate the experiments performed by Nic Gay (Gay, N.C.1976. Fracture growth around openings in large blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression. International journal of Rock Mechanics and Minining Sciences and Geomechical Abstracts, vol. 13. pp. 231-243) on fracture growth around openings in blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression, using the Elfen discrete element code. The results of the physical experiments indicated a number of trends that were successfully replicated in the numerical simulations, including crushing ahead of the face, the formation of a sub-vertical tensile fracture at centre-span, the formation of groups of fractures originating from the crushed face zone, the formation of large corner-to-corner fractures which precede sample failure, and linking of slot corner and sample corner fractures leading to sample failure. In addition, other features were apparent that were not reported by Gay. It is believed that these took the form of conjugate shear fractures (as reported by Gay in a previous paper) and other features that may have been altered or inhibited by the presence of pre-existing structure in the physical samples. It was found that the samples, though nominally made up of the same rock type, must have had significantly differing properties. The presence of pre-existing structures may have contributed to this discrepancy. Strain measurements from the physical experiments were reasonably well matched, except where the gauge lay directly in the path of advancing fractures.

After the presentation of the paper (published in the March Journal) the Vice-President said: "This paper is a very important addition to the considerable volume of work applications on this subject of pneumoconiosis. The disease, in all its various forms, has received attention from many, many great men, both in the medical world, and engineers. The fact that there is this big volume of publications of literature on it still doesn't mean that we can get anywhere beyond the old, simple injunction, that the prevention of pneumoconiosis does not depend on compensation, levies or anything else. It simply depends on allaying dust as quickly as possible. "This paper, however, is another scientific landmark and I think, in a cold and dispassionate way, it sets out some important points in this whole subject of the relationship of the levy - the money of compensation to the dust which causes it. "I have, personally, very little to criticise in this paper but when I listened to Dr du Toit's final conclusions, I wondered whether the words, 'Within the data available', aren't the key to this whole situation. I agree that he has demonstrated a workable relationship between the current industries for levy and dustiness, but among the factors which he lists as being important, I know that there is one which is missing. This is extremely difficult to evaluate. It's a factor which has destroyed, on so many occasions, the work which has been done by so many genuine, intent, honest people working in this field, and this is this unknown factor, this hidden factor of political opportunism, which has so often played a very important part in pneumoconiosis compensation. "How many of us have seen the grubby, grasping fingers of power-mad demagogues, and I can name them for you - but I won't - and also the blatant vote-catching of certain politicians interfering in this field. How, at the end of all that, the poor scientist, the poor dedicated man in the Mines' Department, who has to write the law of compensation, can operate, I do not know. "From this picture the ordinary layman recoils in horror. Among the casualties in this particular war, which has been fought over so many years, I am perfectly certain, are some of the criteria of certification, especially in '56/,57, when that extraordinary condition, known as 'pulmonary disability' was introduced. FINANCE The annual accounts, which follow this report, reflect a healthy position and show that measures taken by Council over the last few years to boost income have been successful. A higher income was needed not only to meet rising costs but also so that the services provided by the Institute for its members could be expanded. This year's income of R55 025 showed a further increase compared with last year's figure of R48 307. Income from subscriptions was higher mainly owing to an increased number of Company Affiliates, and this is indicative of the support given by mining and metallurgical companies to the good work being done by the Institute. Further sales of publications of the symposia held over the last few years again made a useful contribution to income of R4560. The first Winter School held in 1973 yielded a surplus of R7495 after the expenses had been deducted from the income received from registration fees. The cost of administering the Institute increased by R2212 compared with the previous year. Included in this was a donation of R1000 to the A.S. & T.S. Trust Fund. The cost of publishing and printing the Journal increased by R2034, but advertising and extraneous sales of the Journal were higher, with the result that the net cost of the

The Hishikari Gold Mine consists of epithermal vein type Au-Ag deposits, each of which has several veins standing almost in parallel each other and inclining 70 to 90 degrees. The veins have 1 to 3m widths and are extracted mainly by drifting and bench stoping with waste rock fill. The Hishikari has tried to optimise the stope dimensions by the Potvin’s Stability Graph Method, which is well known as an easy and effective tool to design appropriate stope dimensions. The method, however, has some limitations of application due to its simplicity so that it has been used only in limited cases. The authors developed a new numerical approach, based on 2D FEM solu-tion for the stability analysis. As a result, it has been possible to solve the Hishikari situation. The authors also introduce the concept of the design approach and compare the results obtained by us-ing the approach with the database of the Stability Graph Method for validation. La mine d’or Hishikari se compose de gisements d'Au-AG avec des types de filons épither-maux dont chacun a plusieurs veines qui sont presque parallèle les unes par rapport aux autres et sont inclinées de 70 à 90 degrés. Les veines ont de 1 à 3 m de largueur et elles sont principalement extraites en creusant et en abattant des bancs de roches encaissantes. Hishikari a essayé d’optimiser les dimensions du chantier d’exploitation avec la méthode de graphique de stabilité de Potvin, bien connue comme un outil facile et efficace pour avoir des dimensions de chantier d’exploitation appropriées. Hishikari hat versucht, die Abmessungen des Abbauorts durch das Potvins Stabilitätskurvenverfahren zu optimieren, das als einfaches und effizientes Mittel für die Erzielung angemessener Abmessungen des Abbauorts bekannt ist. Das Verfahren weist jedoch aufgrund seiner Einfachheit einige Anwendungsbeschränkungen auf, so dass es nur in einigen Fällen benutzt worden ist. Vor diesem Hintergrund haben die Autoren einen neuen numerischen Ansatz entwickelt, der hinsichtlich der Stabilitätsanalyse auf der 2D-FEM-Lösung beruht. Dadurch wurde es möglich, das Problem von Hishikari zu lösen. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of grain size distribution control of the raw material mixture on the permeability of the green sinter bed and the properties of the produced sinter. This was achieved by evaluating the granulation characteristics of the sinter mixture (moisture content, granulation time and mean granule diameter) in terms of its green bed permeability, and evaluating the productivity of the sinter bed, the coke rate, tumble index (TI), abrasion index (AI), reduction disintegration index(RDI) and reducibility (RI) of the produced sinter. The raw sinter mixtures contained combinations of Thabazimbi iron ore, Sishen iron ore, coke, lime and return fines. The grain size distributions were controlled by removing the ?0.5 mm size fractions of the return fines and coke, and the ?1 mm size fraction of lime. Of the examined mixtures, a mixture of 20 mass% Thabazimbi iron ore, 80 mass% Sishen iron ore and fluxes where the coke, lime and return fines were all sized had the highest granulation effectiveness and permeability. The sintering properties of the mixtures in which the grain size distributions were controlled, were very similar for all the mixtures, but superior to the base case mixture in which the grain size distribution was not controlled. The complexity of metallurgical processes in the non-ferrous metals industry. especially changes in the process conditions in combination with a diversity of metal processing furnaces, requires a precise knowledge of the system for the selection of refractory products. However, particular importance is still focused on the specific refractory consumption being as low as possible. The addition of recycling material with a high amount of impurities and the increase of low-grade ore concentrates used in the base-metals industry also entails a significant change of slag chemistries, process temperatures, etc., which influence the performance of already approved linings. This acknowledgement of process changes with decreased brick lifetimes provided the motivation for RHI AG to develop high-performance refractory bricks especially for non-ferrous metals applications. The internal laboratory tests with fayalitic slag showed very promising results compared with our approved magnesia-chromite bricks for this application. In order to identify suitable refractory products and to improve the life of the refractory lining, innovative product development has to be undertaken. In addition, the practical corrosion testing methods and facilities available within the RHI Technology Center, such as the induction furnace and the rotary kiln test equipment, allows the best possible understanding of brick wear at a laboratory scale. Based on the results of the test work, the optimal refractory solution can be recommended for a field trial at the customer?s site.

During the period October 2003 to June 2004, a containerized optical sorting pilot plant was operated at Kloof Gold Mine on a waste rock dump. In this paper, we describe the test work and its results leading to the decision to operate this pilot plant. This paper presents the operational data and financial figures achieved during this project, in particular, for the month of June 2004 when the plant was run at full capacity on three shifts, 24 hour operation. These results are also extrapolated and presented to show the profitability of such an operation at today?s gold price levels and cost structure.

Drying, calcination, prereduction, and smelting are the main steps in conventional crude ferronickel production. Industrially, these steps are conducted using the rotary kiln-electric arc furnace (RKEF) process. In this paper, calcination characteristics of Sivrihisar laterite ores from the Central Anatolia region are investigated. The extent of elimination of chemically bound water and other volatiles was studied by experiments conducted at various temperatures in the 250?800°C range. Phase changes were examined using X-ray diffractometry. For the particle size used in the study, 300°C was determined to be almost sufficient for complete transformation of goethite to haematite, and 700°C was required for effective elimination of all volatiles in the ore.

Most coal plants must run under conditions of varying feed conditions or are asked to produce qualities different from that used in the design. This can cause overloaded conditions as the ?bottlenecks? within the plant, depending on plant operation or as the feed changes. During plant design, geological information can be used to determine washability envelopes and blends that may be expected. Historical data can also be used to develop a size distribution envelope as well as to assign reasonable models for each of the unit processes. In operation, a plant can be sampled to determine changes and to refine process models. The information obtained can then be used in an accurate simulation to define how the plant can deal with the changing environment. This paper uses Limn: The Flowsheet Processor to simulate the coal plant in detail and will produce an accurate model, in terms of equipment sizing as well as water, medium, and solids balance, for each change in feed condition. It will show examples of running the simulation through complete density and size ranges and will determine the equipment required to address each part of the performance envelope.

(7.4) The following example will help to illustrate the importance of the variance of dispersion. Assume that we plan to develop a bedded coal deposit Q. We consider mining the ore body with only one giant dragline, which will extract each day a block of coal of size W'. The total area mined in a year will have a size W". We want to know whether this scheme is acceptable, given that the daily variation in ash content must not exceed a given percentage specified in the sales contract, which is renewable on a yearly basis. On a given day, if we mine the block W' (z), the ash content will average pwT (z). In a period of one year, the expected daily variation in ash content is measured by the expected variance of pwf (z) in W", i.e. by a2 (W'in W"). An alternative mining method might be to use two smaller draglines, each one mining W'/2 of ore per day, and Wn/2 per year. While the refractory lining contains the process on a steady-state basis, the tap-hole must provide a channel for transport of molten materials at discreet intervals, with thermal cycling as routine. The tap-hole introduces a discontinuity in any lining, and this fact can lead to failure in the region around the tap-hole before general lining failure occurs. Hence there is a need for a rapid and reliable tap-hole repair technique that can be readily implemented in conjunction with all types of linings. The UCAR®V Repair supplied by GrafTech is a durable solution capable of repairing all types of lining designs and has been extensively utilized in the ferroalloy industry. More than 20 UCAR®V Repairs have been successfully performed in South Africa alone. This paper describes the system in general and reviews recent repairs and their unique challenges.
