Enargite in porphyry copper deposits is an important mineral as it displays good floatability under the presence of the collectors usually used in the flotation of copper sulfides. As a result, copper concentrates grades are reduced. As scarcity of water resources is a problem relevant to Chilean mining, the use of seawater is a feasible solution. The behaviour of copper sulfides and molybdenite in the process of flotation in seawater was previously studied but not for enargite. The objective of this research is to study the behaviour of the enargite in different conditions of electrochemical potential during the process of flotation using seawater. The study was carried through micro-flotation tests using pure samples of enargite, at Eh values ranging from -300 to 500 mV(SHE), both in seawater and aqueous solutions containing calcium and magnesium. The results show that at pH 10.5 in seawater, the enargite and chalcopyrite recoveries are reduced throughout the whole range of Eh studied. At pH 9 in seawater, enargite and chalcopyrite are depressed under reducing and slightly oxidising conditions. The recovery of both minerals drastically decreases at Eh values lower than -100 mV and greater than 400 mV. The behaviour of enargite in seawater flotation differs from that observed in conventional water, since in the latter case the recovery of enargite decreases at higher potentials close to 500 mV. The enhancement of shear flocculation of a galena suspension by ultrasound in the presence of sodium isopropyl xanthate and potassium ethyl xanthate was investigated by studying the effects of surfactant concentration on flocculation efficiency, contact angle, and zeta potential. Strong flocculation was obtained under alkaline conditions (pH > 9) and a high ultrasound power level (150 W). Although the ultrasonic treatment increased the negativity of the zeta potential of the galena particles, this did not decrease the flocculation efficiency, thereby showing that the hydrophobic interactions between the particle were stronger than the electrical double-layer repulsion resulting from xanthate adsorption. The findings indicate that the ultrasonic treatment promoted the adsorption of surfactants onto the mineral surfaces.

Recovery of precious metals from hydrochloric solution using sulfur-impregnated carbonaceous adsorbent was examined. Sulfur-impregnated adsorbent with adsorption abilities of precious metals can be prepared from activated carbon using pyrolysis at 600 oC under 10 % H2S gas flow, and the adsorbed Au and Pd were precipitated as metal phase on the surface of the adsorbent. The adsorbents after precious metals adsorption were burned at 700 oC to obtain the residue mainly containing precious metals. The adsorbent was found to be highly efficient and selective for the uptake of precious metals, especially Au, in the presence of excess base metal ions from simulated spent automotive catalyst eluted solution using a column pack test. The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). To improve the flotation performance of chalcopyrite collector, 2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl xanthate (TBEX) and its derivative O-(2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl)-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (TBEETC) were designed and prepared by the introduction of a 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group into xanthate and thionocarbamate. TBEX and TBEETC were both prepared via the one-pot method with superior efficiency, which has significant commercial implications. The micro-flotation tests demonstrated that compared with sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) and O-isopropyl-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (Z-200), TBEX and TBEETC both possessed better collecting ability and selectivity for chalcopyrite. DFT calculations and XPS were utilised to investigate the flotation mechanism involving TBEX or TBEETC and chalcopyrite. The results demonstrate that although 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group does not interact with minerals directly, its introduction reduces the energy of HOMO, so that they can better accept electrons instead of donating electrons which leads to better interaction with copper atoms rather than iron atoms. This paper briefly describes a computerised model of the South African electricity system which has been developed jointly by the Atomic Energy Board and the Electricity Supply Commission. The results of an analysis of this system have been subjected to a fairly extensive sensitivity analysis which reveals that up to the year 1990 between 680 and 700 million tons of coal will be required for electric power generation, together with between 7 000 and 10 000 tons of uranium. This result is fairly insensitive to data variations, but the prediction of a cumulative requirement up to the year 2000, of between 1 300 and 1 800 million tons of coal and 25 000 to 70 000 tons of uranium, proves to be very data-sensitive.

"In this investigation, the phosphorus distribution ratios in the CaF2 system and B2O3 system dephosphorization slags for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment were measured by an indirect method under laboratory conditions. Firstly, the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and solid iron was measured, and then the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and hot metal was calculated. Phosphorus capacity was calculated in terms of the composition and optical basicity of the slag. Dephosphorization slag was also studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The experimental results show that the phosphorus capacity of the B2O3 slag system is much greater than that of the CaF2 system. It is demonstrated thatB2O3 can completely replace CaF2 as fluxing agent for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment. With CaF2 as fluxing agent, the phosphorus capacity increases with increasing CaO content in the slag, but the phosphorus distribution ratio decreases. B2O3, when used as fluxing agent, can react with high melting point phases such as 2CaO·SiO2 and 3CaO·P2O5 in the slag to form new phases with low melting points such as 11CaO·B2O3.4SiO2, 2CaO·B2O3.SiO2, and Ca9.93(P5.84B0.16O24) (B0.67O1.79), thereby acting as a fluxing agent. When the ratio of w(B2O3)/w(CaO) is 0.16, the phosphorus distribution ratio reaches its maximum value, that is, the dephosphorization ability of the slag is at its maximum. IntroductionAs international iron ore prices continue to rise, the development of China's steel industry is facing a lot of pressure. Against this background, development and utilization of domestic high-phosphorus iron ore resources is particularly important. When highphosphorus iron ore is used in ironmaking, the phosphorus content in the hot metal can reach 0.35% or more, and the hot metal must be pretreated. For hot metal with 0.08–0.10% dissolved phosphorus, the traditional hot metal dephosphorization pretreatment technologies are relatively mature. However, when using these methods to dephosphorize hot metal containing 0.35% P or more, the amount of dephosphorization slag can reach 100–150 kg per ton of hot metal. Furthermore, the traditional dephosphorization methods require the addition of large amounts of CaF2 as fluxing agent, and this results in high fluoride levels in the dephosphorization slag. The fluorine in the slag can partially dissolve in water and thereby causes high fluoride concentration in the water and soil. Once the fluoride is absorbed by humans or animals, it can result in toxic effects on the central nervous system and myocardium. In addition, fluoride can accumulate in the environment, and thereby pose a health risk to animals and humans through the food chain (Li, 2007; Liu, Wang, and Dong, 2011, Diao, 2013). The objective of this research is to replace CaF2 with B2O3 as fluxing agent while achieving the expected goals of hot metal pretreatment."

Copper sulfide minerals generally have high floatability, but their floatability decreases when surfaces are oxidised under some conditions. Sodium hydrosulfide, NaHS, is known both as an activator and as a depressant for copper minerals. NaHS at low concentrations activates copper oxides by sulfurising surfaces, but at high concentrations depresses copper sulfides by interfering with the adsorption of collectors. In this paper, we applied NaHS to activate oxidised chalcocite and bornite and focused on the conditions of NaHS treatments such as dosages and pH, and the effect of these conditions on the floatability of those minerals. The pure minerals treated with NaHS were analysed using zeta potential analyser and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Analyses indicated that the reactions of NaHS and the products on the mineral surfaces after the reactions (i.e. oxidation, pH change) depended on whether NaHS reacted with copper or iron, and the reactions between NaHS and iron depend on NaHS concentration and pH. Flotation tests using a small column cell were performed with a single pure mineral, and using a Denver-type flotation machine with a copper sulfide ore. The results of each flotation test were utilised to clarify the floatability. The relation between flotation behaviours and analysis results were also discussed. Mines of Southern Kuzbass working out, basically, coal formations of flat seams. Seams, as a rule, are inclined to self-ignition. Detection at early stages of the centers of endogenous underground fires has great value for safe conducting mountain works. One of methods of detection of an early stage of underground fires in the worked out space is the method of superficial radon survey. In the report the method is de-scribed and examples of superficial radon survey on concrete layers are given.

Most of the Au and PGM ores in Russia are characterised by a thin mineral impregnation of noble metals in sulfide minerals, and a large variety of mineral forms that lead to high loss of precious metals with fine fractions during flotation. In modern flotation technology, the rational choice of reagents is one of the main trends for selective separation of minerals and effective metals recovery. New data on the selectivity of the thermo-sensitive polymer with specific functional groups (TMPPh) as a flocculant and collector of Au and Pt fine fractions are available. The selective modified collector (DEDTCm) for the recovery of Au and Pt from complex ores is discussed in this paper. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEAM), laser SIM and AFM microscopy, UV and IR spectroscopy were applied to study the adsorbed layer of new reagents on the mineral surface. Flotation tests of TMPPh on the gold-bearing ore of the Olimpiada deposit showed an increase in Au extraction and Au content in the concentrate of the rougher flotation. Using a combination of reagents TMPPh and ButX, the quality of the Au and Pt concentrates increased in 1.7 time with an increase in recovery up to 15 % compared with the traditional reagent mode. Testing of TMPPh polymers in flotation of Pt-Cu-Ni ore at Norilsk Nickel has shown the ability to obtain a concentrate with a higher Pt content. Recovery of platinum is 17% higher than recovery in an experiment without polymer. Application of DEDTCm helped to achieve higher technological parameters in flotation of lowgrade Rt-Cu-Ni ore. Compared to the basic mode Pt recovery was plus 13%, Pd recovery was plus 9% and the content of precious metals in the rougher flotation concentrate increased in 2,5 - 4 times. Scandium can be recovered from waste streams of other metallurgical processes such as red mud from the Bayer process and titanium dioxide acid waste. This is accomplished by an integrated process comprising leaching using acidic media, solvent extraction using organic solvents and stripping of Sc from the organic phase using NH4F solutions. The precipitation of scandium as (NH4)3ScF6 from NH4F strip liquors has been demonstrated at lab-scale with recoveries and purities greater than 98% and 98.3%, respectively. It is desired to assess the possibility of recovering the solvents for re-use in the process to improve its economy and environmental friendliness. Investigations have been conducted to recover alcohol by simple distillation from strip liquor-alcohol mixtures containing about 50 v/v% alcohol. The mixtures were obtained after anti-solvent precipitation of (NH4)3ScF6 using an alcohol to strip liquor volumetric ratio of 1:1. The starting strip liquor contained about 2000 mg/L scandium in 3 mol/L NH4F solution. In the recovery of methanol, the first distillate product collected had a purity of about 87 v/v% and this decreased slightly with time over two hours. The methanol distillate collected in the first 30 minutes with a purity of ca. 85 v/v% was re-used in anti-solvent crystallisation of (NH4)3ScF6 from the initial strip liquor, and the scandium recovery attained was about 98.6 w/w%, almost similar to that of 99.2 w/w% obtained using 100 v/v% methanol. For ethanol recovery, the first distillate product collected was approx. 84 v/v% pure and the distillate collected in the first 30 minutes with a purity of about 75 v/v% achieved a scandium recovery of about 97.2 w/w% in comparison to 98.5 w/w% obtained using 100 v/v% ethanol during anti-solvent crystallisation. I read your paper in the Journal of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy with great interest, and must compliment you on its brilliance. However, there are some questions I should like to ask, and certain points I should like to highlight. I should appreciate your comments. Written contribution by J.F. Curtis The comprehensive and finely detailed survey of, and proposals for, engineering education in South Africa reflects the author's wide experience in the needs for, and the provision of, such education. This paper wil make a major contribution to the enhancement of the profession of engineering and the improvement in quality of engineering activities in South Africa. Contribution by G.W. Annandalet I have studied your paper in some detail, and am of the opinion that it makes an important contribution to the topic of the development of technological manpower, which is currently being debated in South Africa at al levels. Debate on this topic has risen above the level of academic discussion; it has been discussed by the Economic Advisory Council of the President, and is being considered at Ministerial level. As you have pointed out, there are certainly many aspects that will have to be addressed in the resolution of the crisis in engineering education. Metso Minerals Cisa have developed VisiofrothTM - a system which calculates parameters of the froth surface using vision from remote cameras mounted about individual flotation cells. The parameters calculated from this system can be utilised within process control strategies to achieve stabilisation or optimisation of the flotation process. As part of a JKMRC AMIRA P9 field campaign, froth vision was collected from various cells operated at different air rates and froth depths within Rio Tinto's Northparkes copper roughing and scavenging circuit. At the same time, samples were collected to determine the cell metallurgical performance at each operating condition. These froth images have been processed using the VisiofrothTM system with froth velocity, bubble size, froth collapse rate and various froth colour parameters calculated. These parameters have been compared to the measured concentrate flow and concentrate grade produced at each condition. This analysis shows that the concentrate tonnage flow is strongly correlated with froth velocity whereas the concentrate grade is best correlated using froth velocity in combination with a bubble stability parameter which affects the bubble size distribution on the top surface of the froth. This paper summarises the results from this analysis as well as an overview of the VisiofrothTM system and the parameters that are measured by the software.

Discussion: L. T. Campbell Pitt: When Mr Garrett and I discussed the design and construction of plugs and bulk head doors to resist great water pressures in mines about ten years ago, we visualized an emeregeny when there would be no time for site preparation. We could not however, anticipate a problem of such magnitude and urgency as the one described in the paper under discussion. The paper very clearly describes the flooding and the measures taken to save the mine. The complete flooding would have been a national disaster. The account of the combat between man and water reads like the account of a military operation. It was an endeavour which achieved success because there was a master plan, tenacity and, in fact, heroism. The paper is of necessity a long one. In my contribution I will mention some historical facts and factors that I believe have relevance to the flooding and the saving of the mine. It is of great satisfaction to me to have been one of the two initiators of a new approach to underground plug design and construction. The investigation was taken over by a Chamber of Mines Committee which combined our early work with further research and the resulting data had a significant bearing on the West Drie emergency plug designs. The final plug length was correctly based on the requirements to obviate leakage. A plug to have structural strength only would have been very much shorter but so ineffective as to have become a waste of labour, material, and in consequence, wasted the limited time available to prevent flooding of the whole mine. The figure of 75 lb per sq in. sheer stress provided a very ample margin, in my opinion, but under the very difficult site conditions and the limitations of plug material suitable for the very unusual construction, justified such a figure. There must have been considerable temptation to reduce the safety margin due to the urgency to complete and commission the plugs, but it is much to the credit of the directors of this operation that nothing less than a safe design was permitted. In about 1945 Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mining Company, which was then mining in to the West Driefontein area to assist in early development, decided to protect themselves from a possible inrush of water from the latter mine. A bulk head door was accordingly designed and installed on 2 level between 1945 and 1948 at 4,218 ft below surface. Since West Driefontein paid for it, Gold Fields consulting mechanical engineers collaborated with their colleagues of Rand Mines who completed their design after a few modifications were agreed. This door was never used to prevent an inrush into Blyvooruitzicht but the exercise was very useful to Gold Fields when the high pressure doors initially installed on 10 and 12 levels between Nos. 2 and 3 shafts to enable isolation of one section of the mine from another were designed. At that time the capacity of West Driefontein to cope with an inrush of water was comparatively small because the storage in stoped areas and the installed pump capacity were much less than in later years. These doors together with others of the same design were later moved to the lower levels served by sub vertical shafts. In addition, doors to prevent flood water entering the pump chambers on 18 level were installed at each end of that level, and designed for a head of 360 feet so that water would have to reach 16 level before the pumps were flooded. All these doors were called upon to hold water and it is reported that only a small plug in one of the doors and a 4 in. dia flanged pipe joint failed. The lesson is that in these cases the smallest details warrant as much attention as the major ones. That these were the only equipment failures when so much depended on equipment, is very much to the credit of design engineers, both of the Gold Fields head office and companies who supplied both mechanical and electrical equipment. Until I had read the paper I wondered why the policy of isolation by bulk head doors was not continued as the development moved eastward towards the Bank Compartment and particularly when it pierced the Bank dyke. The reasons have been given in the paper. It was unreasonable to expect provisions to be made to counter the remote contingency that the large installed pumping capacity and mine capacity to store water would be exceeded during a peak inrush. When pumps were being considered for West Driefontein, it was decided that the Gold Fields standard underground main pumps at that time of 1 million gallons per 24 hours would be too small. Three alternatives were considered. 1. Very large units that would require underground sub assembly and dismantling of both pump and motor. 2. The largest pump and motor that could be conveyed as a complete pump or motor from surface to the pump chamber. 3. Pumps of higher speed to reduce dimensions and weight. It was decided to adopt alternate 2 because of avoidance of transporting pumps in parts and assembling underground. Alternative 3 was not favoured because high speeds would have introduced problems of more exact rotor balancing. Kaolin is one of the most important ingredients in porcelain manufacturing. Its main phase is clay mineral containing aluminum hydrosilicate, namely kaolinite. Beside kaolinite it also contains quartz, illite and feldspars, which impair its applicability. Kaolin is a non-reactive material, but metakaolin can be produced by heat treatment (calcination) of kaolin, which is also used by the cement and concrete industry due to its latent hydraulic (pozzolanic) properties. Beside thermal activation, reactive materials can also be produced by mechanochemical activation in general. This paper deals with the mechanochemical activation of kaolin. The raw material was classified into various size fractions, then ground in a batch stirred media mill under varying circumstances (residence time, circumferential velocity). After grinding, the structural changes of the products were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, the particle size distribution of the ground material was determined by laser scattering. As a result of the grinding experiments and analytical measurements of the products, it can be clearly seen that reactivity of kaolin can be improved significantly by mechanical activation in a stirred media mill, but due to its high energy density the circumstances were optimised carefully to avoid aggregation. "Lump coals are currently employed to replace part of coke in the COREX melter-gasifier for ironmaking. In order to optimize the process, the pyrolysis kinetics of Datong coal used in the COREX process was studied. A sectioning method is proposed to overcome certain shortcomings of traditional methods for studying the pyrolysis of coal. Based on the sectioning method and the characteristics of the coal pyrolysis process, the temperature range was divided into three intervals. In the first, the adsorbed gas and water of crystallization were removed; in the second, the coal was transformed into semi-coke; and finally, the semi-coke was further coked. Three models of reaction were then established to study the different stages of the pyrolysis process: an interfacial chemical reaction model, a random pore model, and internal diffusion with shrinking volume. The results showed that the experimental data fitted the models well, with all correlation coefficients (r2) exceeding 0.97. Finally, the mechanisms of reaction and kinetic parameters for each temperature range were derived, which laid a necessary foundation for optimizing the usage of non-coking coal in the COREX process. IntroductionIn view of environmental concerns and the shortage of good-quality coking coal, the COREX process was designed as a new ironmaking technology, attracting wide attention (Fang et al., 2005). In this process, lump coal and a small quantity of coke are directly charged into the melter-gasifier, where a high-quality reducing gas is generated for the reduction of the iron ore (Kumar et al., 2009). In contrast to the conventional blast furnace (BF) process, non-coking lump coal is used as the reducing agent and as the energy source, and the iron charge consists of lump ore and/or pellets, which results in the elimination of the coke oven and sintering plant as well as a decrease in investment (Kumar et al., 2009; Liu et al., 2012).Although the COREX process has made great progress, in current production practice the energy consumption greatly exceeds that of the BF, and it requires a certain amount of coke to maintain permeability of the semi-coke bed (Wang et al., 2008). In addition, the process consumes a lot of good-quality lump ore and lump coal. The pyrolysis of coal is the first step in most coal conversion processes, such as carbonization, gasification, and combustion (Aboyade et al., 2013). The reaction behaviour of lump coals in the COREX melter-gasifier is crucial, as it determines energy utilization and gas composition, as well as the metallurgical properties and particle size of the semi-coke produced (Prachethan et al., 2011; Zhang et al., 2014). In order to optimize the process and improve its competitiveness, the pyrolysis kinetics of Datong coal used in Baosteel’s COREX C-3000 facility was studied."

An approach to the design of a tailings disposal system is presented using an example from a platinum project on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex as a base case. The design is driven by two inputs: namely, maximizing water recovery and minimizing power cost, expressed as cubic metres and kilowatts per ton of solids deposited on the tailings storage facility respectively. The approach considers low-, medium-, and high-density platinum tailings and uses material-specific aspects such as thickening and rheology to determine the most economical option. An analysis based on direct capital and operating cost (water and electricity) shows that the medium-density scenario results in the lowest total cost per ton of tailings deposited, even though this system results in the highest electricity consumption per ton of tailings deposited. As the cost of water and electricity is likely to increase in the future, the higher-density tailings disposal options become more economical, with the paste option the preferred option.

Sperrylite is one of the most abundant platinum minerals globally, valued for its economic importance but also known for its highly refractory nature, making it difficult to process via the conventional route. This study explores the oxidative leaching of sperrylite using a cyanide–ferricyanide system, with a key focus on characterisation of the mineral and surface speciation under varied leaching conditions using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The parameters investigated include the effect of sodium cyanide concentration, the use of potassium ferricyanide as an oxidant, copper sulphate pentahydrate as a catalyst, as well as the effects of temperature and particle size. A limited set of leaching tests was carried out to study the surface chemistry rather than optimising dissolution conditions. This approach identified mineral oxidation states and shifts in binding energies, prior to and post leaching. XPS analysis of sperrylite’s surface chemistry identified key species, comprising the bulk Pt(II)–As (≈73 eV) and As(–I)–Pt (≈41.8 eV) states, together with surface oxidation products Pt(II)–O (≈72 eV), Pt(IV)–O (≈74.5 eV), As(III)–O (≈43 eV) and As(V)–O (44.5 eV). Leaching led to the removal of pre-existing oxides on the ultra-finely ground sample, exposing the underlying bulk species. In contrast, the crystalline sample with an initial low concentration of oxides, generated higher amounts of fully oxidised species after leaching, reflecting greater surface reactivity.

"Recent geological exploration at Rosh Pinah mine revealed that the mine’s major production is shifting towards the western orefield, which will increase the demand for air flow to be supplied to this area. A snapshot of the ventilation survey carried out in December 2014 at the western orefield drill drive B (WOF-DDRB) showed that the air flow was well below the required standards. In order to improve the existing conditions, possible options were considered and simulated using Ventsim™ software.The best option found was to replace the existing western orefield fans with the larger fans from the inactive southern orefield workings, to increase the air flow in the DDRB district. Simulation showed that as much as 20 m3/s of air can be received at the working faces of WOF 30, compared to the previously received amount of 1.37 m3/s. The economic analysis indicated that the above option can reduce the ventilation cost by N$1.9 million annually. It was also noticed that after implementing this option together with other projects, the ventilation conditions in the mine were greatly improved and currently give no cause for concern. IntroductionA good mine ventilation system should be capable of providing adequate quantity and quality of air to all working faces, and is critical to the occupational health, safety, and comfort of underground employees (Luxbacher and Ramani, 1977; Exikis and Kapageridis, 2006). No ventilation system can remain adequate indefinitely; as the mine workings are extended, the ventilation characteristics such as system pressures, air volumes, leakages, and airway resistances change considerably. Continuous improvement of the ventilation system is needed to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations (Lovejoy, 2010). It also ensures that the right quality and quantity of air is delivered to all the necessary areas at the lowest possible cost. This can be achieved by identifying inefficient airways and poorly ventilated areas in the mine and planning how best to upgrade them.The latest geological exploration shows that the focus of production at Rosh Pinah mine is shifting towards the western orefield (WOF). As mining progressed, the working areas have advanced away from the main fans, which increased the resistance to air flow drastically and resulted in increasing demands being imposed on the main fan in order to supply an adequate air flow. This process also created more leakage paths between the fan and the working areas, which has caused the air to short-circuit before it can reach the faces. Consequently, a much larger quantity of air has to be circulated by the fan so that the stipulated quantity reaches the face, which increases operating costs (Singh et al., 2004)."

Despite the four-decade study on ultrasound’s (US) impact on mineral’s floatabilities, there is still not clarity regarding its role in mineral surface wettability. For this purpose, the present investigation endeavours ……the hydrophobicity and floatability characteristics of a chalcopyrite-pyrite-quartz (Cp- Py-Qtz) system in the presence and absence of an ultrasonic pre-treatment. The ultrasonic process was carried out by a sonopuls at a constant frequency of 20 kHz with an adjustable power level from 30 to 200 W. Initially, the impact of sonication time (15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 s as well as 10, 20 and 30 min) and power magnitude (30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 W) were evaluated while the dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity and pH were also monitored. Collector-less micro-flotation tests were carried out on the non-pre-treated and the US pre-treated samples at 60 W and 15 s. The samples’ hydrophobicities were determined by the drop shape analysis approach. The dissolved-oxygen level was varied using a mini bench pressurised water reactor to study the effect of O2(aq) concentration on the chalcopyrite and pyrite wettability characteristics. The results showed that the minerals’ hydrophilicities were relatively more sensitive to the sonication’s time than its power that resulted in reducing all three minerals’ hydrophobicities. In addition, it was found that the dissolved-oxygen content and creation of sub-micron sized bubbles led to an improvement on chalcopyrite and pyrite hydrophobicities. Finally, we proved that the Cp’s floatability increased and Qtz’s recovery reduced while being subjected to the ultrasonic irradiation (15 s at 60 W); however, Py’s recovery remained constant. This conclusion confirmed the possibility of a selective separation in ultrasound-assisted copper ore flotation. We recommend that further advanced investigations be conducted, using an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to thoroughly understand the surface modifications induced by the ultrasonication
