During the summer of 1946, the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the U.S. Bureau of Mines established several primary magnetic base stations near important iron-producing districts in Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Stations were located in groups of four to six in six separate base-station areas, and each position was marked with a concrete monument. Differences in magnetic intensity between stations in these areas, as well as the difference between each area and a magnetic datum at the magnetic observatory of the Coast and Geologic Survey at Cheltenham, Md., were measured with a modified Askania magnetometer. Measurements also were made with a Hotchkiss superdip to study the usefulness of the stations for the calibration of instruments of this type. The work was planned and supervised by F. W. Lee, chief of the Division of Geophysical Exploration, and Edward F. Fitzhugh, Jr., chief of the Minneapolis Division of the Bureau of Mines. Special mention is due Harold B. Ewoldt, Bureau of Mines engineer, for his assistance in the field work, especially in locating and establishing monuments. Special mention also is due Clyde L. Holmberg, of the Bureau of Mines, for the magnetic measurements made with the Hotchkiss superdip. Helpful suggestions were received in the field from H. L. James, of the U. S. Geological Survey. [Recent investigations at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City indicate that metallurgists have given little attention to the occurrence of jarosite minerals in the oxidized ores of lead and silver. These investigations have also emphasized the importance of lowing when these minerals occur in the oxidized ores, especially those containing lead, silver, and gold, as their presence is a material factor in selecting a suitable kind of treatment. Since the question of the occurrence of jarosites in oxidized ores has come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, investigation has indicated that plumbojarosite and argentojarosite are quite common. These two minerals appear to be widely distributed and probably escaped recognition by persons who had attempted to treat certain oxidized lead ores in which the jarosite minerals represented a material portion of the metal content. Consideration of the physical characteristics of the jarosites also indicates that in many cases failure to treat some of the oxidized lead ores with success has been directly due to the fact that the greater portion of their lead and silver content was present as plumbojarosite and argentojarosite. The data and the description of these minerals given in the body of this paper indicate that attempts to recover lead and silver from ores in which appreciable amounts of too metals occur is plumbojarosite and. argentojarosite would be unsuccessful if confined to gravity methods of concentration. There are undoubtedly considerable tonnage of oxidize lead ores in the various mining regions of this and other countries, and it is quite probable tat in some of these ores the metal content of lead and silver may be largely anglesite (lead sulphate) and cerussite (lead carbonate) but that they will also contain cerargyrite (silver chloride), argentojarosite, and plumbojarosite. The use of liquid hydrogen as a high-energy fuel introduces numerous hazards not ordinarily associated with the use of other more conventional fuels. These hazards are attributable to the unique properties of hydrogen in the liquid and gas states (table 1). Since little work has been conducted on explosion and related hazards of cryogenic fuels, a research program was undertaken to obtain basic data on such dangers for hydrogen and other combustibles under these conditions. These data were used to outline emergency procedures for protecting personnel and equipment when an accidental spillage of liquid hydrogen occurs and to establish a quantity-distance table for the storage of this fuel. The vaporization of liquid hydrogen from a surface is treated as a prob¬lem in heat transfer theory. Two extreme cases are briefly considered: (1) The transfer of heat occurs at constant temperature drop between, the boiling liquid and the hot surface, and (2) the transfer of heat is limited by the rate at which it can flow to the surface from a hot insulating medium. The available data indicate that the former case (1) is applicable when vaporizing from a conducting surface and, initially, when vaporizing from an insulating medium; the latter case (2) is applicable after initial flash vaporization has occurred from the insulating medium. The vaporization rate determines in part the rate at which flammable hydrogen vapor-air mixtures are formed above a spill area. However, the rates at which heat is transferred to the vapor, and air is brought in contact with it also are of importance. Accordingly, the distribution of flammable mixtures above a spill area was determined experimentally. In general, flammable mixtures were found to be both above and within the visible vapor cloud.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research in an attempt to provide a more sound basis for recommending improved artificial support during deepening of the main shaft of the Lucky Friday mine in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of northern Idaho. Field measurements of closure across the short axis of the 13-by 26-foot shaft were as high as 16 inches. Elastic/plastic finite-element (F/E) analyses were made, reducing the values of large-scale in situ rock mass properties until field closure measurements generally corresponded to displacements in the F/E analyses. Resulting plots of rock mass displacements, stresses, and areas of plastic failure display the results of creating openings (shaft, in this case) in deep mines in difficult ground conditions requiring artificial support.

Improvements in production of high-purity chromium metal by magnesium reduction of anhydrous chlorides and by hydrogen treatment of electrolytic chromium are reported. Hydrogen-treated chromium has been arc-melted, and the arc-melted material has been successfully forged, rolled, and swaged. The material also has been forged at liquid-air temperatures. X-ray and metallographic studies indicate the recrystallization temperature of rolled chromium sheet to be about 750° C. Preliminary investigation of hot-bending characteristics of rolled chromium sheet shows the minimum bending temperature to be about 325° C. The heat resistance of chromium has been investigated.

THIS REPORT gives results of an investi¬gation of the carbonizing properties of coals from Pittsburgh bed, Jamison No. 9 mine, Marion County, W. Va., and from Upper Freeport bed, Bull Run No. 1 mine, Preston County, W. Va. The study included Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association tests at 800° and 900° C. and various chemical and physical tests designed to evaluate the plastic, expanding, and agglutinating properties of coal. A blend of each coal was carbonized in the 500-pound slot oven. The carbonization sample of Pittsburgh coal contained 2.7 percent moisture, 35.8 percent volatile matter, 54.4 percent fixed carbon, 7.1 percent ash, and 0.9 percent sulfur. It contained 60.9 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free basis and had a heating value of 14,780 B. t. u. per pound on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis. It therefore ranks as high-volatile A bituminous and was blended with low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal. Upper Freeport coal contained 2.8 percent moisture, 27.7 percent volatile matter, 60.9 percent fixed carbon, 8.6 percent ash, and 1.0 percent sulfur, as carbonized. It contained 69.5 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free basis and therefore ranks as medium-volatile bituminous. It was blended with high-volatile A Pittsburgh coal from Allegheny County Pa.

The increasing demands for petroleum and its products and the steadily increasing cost of discovering and developing new oil fields are factors that emphasize the importance of increasing the recovery of oil from known petroleum reserves. Water flooding is a valuable conservation measure, not only preventing premature abandonment of stripper leases but also reviving interest in many areas previously abandoned. The use of water flooding as a means for recovering additional oil from partly depleted oil-bearing formations was first tried in Oklahoma in 1931. Early water-flooding operations were confined to the area of shallow Bartlesville-sand formations in Nowata and Rogers Counties, where many of the projects were outstandingly successful. The results of these operations stimulated activities in other pools in Oklahoma, and by the end of 1949 water flooding had been tried in 25 of the 49 oil-producing counties in the State (fig. 1). Approximately 33 million barrels of oil, or 1,806 barrels per acre, had been recovered by December 31, 1949, from 18,221 productive acres included in the 162 active and abandoned projects in Oklahoma by injection of approximately 449 million barrels of water.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements provide evidence for the formation of Cr(V) intermediates in the enzymatic reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione reductase (GSSG-R) in the presence of NADPH, indicating an initial single-electron transfer step in the reduction mechanism. Depending on the pH, at least two different Cr(V) species are generated which are relatively long-lived. In addition, we have detected the hydroxyl (·OH) radical formation during the GSSG-R catalyzed reduction of Cr(VI) by spin trapping, employing 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) and a-(4-pyridyl-1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone (4-POBN) as spin traps. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) causes only a minor effect on the ·OH radical and Cr(V) formation, indicating that the ~ - is not significantly involved in the reaction mechanism. Catalase enhances the Cr(V) formation and substantially inhibits the ·OH radical formation, indicating the involvement of hydrogen peroxide (H20 2) in the reaction mechanism. Addition of H20i suppresses Cr(V) and enhances the ·OH radical fonnation. Measurements involving N-ethylmaleimide show that the Cr(V) species, produced enzymatically by the reduction of Cr(VI) by GSSG-R, react with H2O2 to generate ·OH radicals, which might participate in the initiation of Cr(VI) carcinogenicity.INTRODUCTIONC(VI) compounds have been found to exert serious toxic and carcinogenic effects on humans and animals [1-4) and to cause mutations in bacteria and transformation of mammalian cells [5-8). In contrast, most Cr(lll) compounds are relatively nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, and nonmutagenic [9, 10]. Cr(VI) and Cr(lll) oxidation states are different in their metabolic pathways: Cr(VI) ions are rapidly transported across cellular membranes [2, 11-13), while Cr(lll) moieties do not easily penetrate cells and are not oxidized by cellular constituents [3]. Since it is known that the reduction of Cr(Vl) is required for its reaction with DNA [2], the molecular mechanisms for the intracellular Cr(VI) reduction have been the focus of studies during the past decade but the details are still not understood."

Research was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the technical feasibility of producing lightweight aggregate from the waste glass fraction of municipal incinerator residues. Tests were conducted to determine the amount and optimum size of glass, the amount of sodium silicate, and the method used to form the material to be expanded. The most suitable mixture, 78 percent glass, 20 percent clay, and 2 percent sodium silicate, was pelletized and then expanded by exposure to a temperature of 1,550° F for 15 minutes The resulting lightweight material had a bulk density of 38 lb/cu ft and exhibited excellent pore structure. Concrete test cylinders made from the light weight aggregate had a unit weight of 104 lb/cu ft and a compressive strength of 2,550 lb/sq in after a 28-day steam cure.

"INTRODUCTION The Friedensville district was one of the most important zinc-producing areas in the United States from 1859 to 1893. The ore minerals near the surface were principally calamine and smithsonite, but with depth sphalerite was found in increasing proportions. The ore bodies of the district are reported to have been in chimneys, occurring in folded and faulted beds of Beekmantown limestone of Ordovician age.The Correll was one of five mines near Friedensyille that were exten¬sively exploited. The high-grade ore shoots were mined to a depth of several hundred feet, but it is believed that inability to compete with lower-cost production elsewhere, rather than exhaustion of the ore bodies, compelled the mines to close.There is no record to indicate that any attempt was made during the period of operation to explore for additional ore in the limestone beds down the dip below the mine workings. The possibility that exploration might reveal additional ore in the limestone beds below the known ore shoots led the Bureau of Mines to diamond-drill the Correll property between September 1943 and January 1944."

In the fiscal years 1946 and 1947 the number of mine explosions decreased compared with the preceding years. However, the loss of life was so serious during the fiscal year 1947 the period when the Government administered bi- tuminous-coal and lignite mines that from April to June 1947 extraordinary measures were taken in mines then under Government possession to obtain com- pliance with provisions concerning rock dusting, ventilation, and blasting that had not been followed. The great loss of life in explosions during the fiscal year 1947 as compared with 1944, 1945, and 1946 is not easy to explain, but the necessity for maintaining adequate protection has been definitely demonstrated. Management, workers, and inspection agencies alike must keep the mines reasonably safe against explosions or allow them to lapse into a condition where chance is the principal protection against disaster. The at- tention given to protecting coal mines and the men employed in them against mine fires, following the disastrous fires in 1944 and 1945, has at least tem- porarily controlled this hazard loss of life from coal-mine fires was re- duced to 1 fatality in 1947. The number of fires was also less, and progress has been made in reducing the heavy losses in both life and property from un- derground coal-mine fires that occurred in the two years mentioned. Fatalities from mine explosions during the past 6 fiscal years, July 1942 to June 1947, totaled 674, and there were 149 explosions; during the preceding 6 years there were 655 fatalities in 132 explosions. The 6 fiscal years 1942- 47 cover the active period of Federal coal-mine inspection. During the fiscal year 1947, there were 154 fatalities from explosions compared with 58 during the fiscal year 1946, 64 in 1945, 94 in 1944, 152 in 1943, and 152 in 1942.

This work was done to develop methods for increasing the yields and purity of vanadium prepared by bomb reduction of vanadium compounds . Compounds reduced were V₂ 05 , V203 , VC , and VC13 . Sodium , calcium , and magnesium were used as reductants . Variables considered included reductant form , bomb size , pressure during reaction , method of ignition , and the use of slag fluidizing additives . It was concluded that yields of 85 to 90 percent can be effected by the calcium reduction of V205 in reactors measuring as much as 14 inches in diameter and 60 inches in height . Optimum charge composition included V₂05 , 65 percent excess calcium , and 0.4 moles sulfur per mole vanadium . Purity of the vanadium produced in large reactors varied from 99.5 to 99.8 percent . The higher purity metal , depending upon the amounts of interstitial impurities present , was usually cold ductile . Although high yields of up to 99.5 percent can be effected by bomb reduction of VC1 , the high pressures developed in the bombs and attack of the reactor walls by the byproduct chloride slags discourages this method of preparing vanadium . It was found that significant purification of impure regulus metal occurred when it was hydrided , crushed , acid leached , and vacuum dehydrided . Metal so treated can readily be converted to ductile sheet . A cost estimate based on the production of 100 tons of vanadium per year was prepared . It was concluded that pure ductile vanadium could be produced for approximately $ 20.00 per pound .

The White Rock area of the Boiling Springs manganese-iron deposits comprises about 3,200 acres of land in Monroe Township, Cumberland County, Pa. (See fig. 1.) This property was brought to the: attention of the Bureau of Mines by Pennsylvania Geological Survey Bulletin 128, entitled "Manganese Ores of Pennsylvania" by R. M. Foose. It was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in August 1942 and was further investigated by the Bureau by churn drilling and underground development during the period December 1942 to February 1944. Beneficiation tests were made on samples of the ore. This report describes the work done during the investigation and presents the results obtained.

Adequate mine roof support to insure the safety of men and equipment is essential to successful mining. It is also expensive, amounting to more than one-fifth of the total mining cost at the White Pine mine. Cost effectiveness is therefore a prime consideration in developing optimum roof support. Roof bolt length is an important cost factor. This Phase II work compared uniform four-foot length Resin Bolts with the hitherto standard alternating four-foot and six-foot Resin Bolts, aiming at more cost-effective roof bolting. The data generated under this Phase II show that there is no discernible difference in the roof support given by uniform four-foot, and by alternating four- and six-foot, Resin Bolts in the relatively difficult ground selected for a severe initial test comparison; subsequent data from less difficult ground led to the same conclusion, namely no discernible difference between four-foot and four-six foot bolting.

The principal official test performed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the permissibility of coal-mine explosives, commonly referred to as the gallery test, has been in use at the Bruceton station for many years (2, 16).4/ In this test the explosive under study is loaded into the borehole of a steel cannon and fired into a flammable mixture of natural gas and air or natural gas, air, and coal dust. To meet the requirements for permissibility, the explosive must not ignite the gas mixture under the conditions of the test. There is little doubt that these tests have succeeded in the main objective, namely, to screen the relatively safe from the relatively hazardous explosives. It has been generally conceded that adoption of permissible explosives by the coal-mining industry in the United States has substantially reduced the frequency of disastrous underground explosions caused by blasting. In recent years, however, research workers planning programs for improving the safety of coal-mine explosives have felt the growing need of a more quantitative method for measuring the incendivity of explosives based on a better understanding of the role of the important variables in the gallery tests, Accordingly, it was decided to apply certain statistical methods and techniques to the gallery test to develop it into a more precise tool for evaluating permissible explosives. One of the first and more important methods applied for this purpose was the up-and-down technique (6,7,17), It was demonstrated (14,15) that the weight of the explosive charge directly affects the ignition probability of the natural gas-air atmosphere and that the curve of ignition probability versus charge weight is a cumulative normal curve. Following these experiments, a program, still in progress, was set up to study how the addition of sodium chloride to various permissible-type ex-plosives affects their incendivity. The results of a four-year research effort aimed at developing a practical and effective electronic system for monitoring safety conditions throughout a coal mine by displaying, at a central location, remotely measured parameters are described. This document presents the general philosophy of an experimental system in an operating coal mine. The conclusions drawn from this experience are presented and a typical design for a large coal mine is described.

The prevention of accidents is considered a necessity at all branches and divisions of the Phelps Dodge Corporation copper-producing operations, and since there is a continual exchange of data on safety accomplishments between the various units, their safety programs are fundamentally similar. Variations in accident-prevention methods result from a difference in emphasis rather than from a difference in the elements themselves. The main copper-producing operations of the corporation ore conducted in Arizona and distributed as follows: Copper Queen Branch, mines division, Fisbee, and smelter division, Douglas, Aria.; Morenci Branch, mines division, Morenci, and smelter division, Clifton, Ariz.; New Cornelia Branch, Ajo, Ariz.; and United Verde Branch, mines division, Jerome, and smelter division, Clarkdale Ariz. As it is not feasible to describe here the safety programs of all branches and divisions, the program at the Clarkdale smelter has been selected for discussion. The United Verde Brach includes the mine and smelter purchased by the Phelps Dodge Corporation in February 1935 from the United Verde Copper Co. The mine at Jerome and the reduction works at Clarkdale are designated, respectively, as the mine and smelter divisions.
