"The mill at Mattagami Lake Mines treats 3,850 tons per day. The mill feed is a heavy sulphide ore. It is composed ofPyrite & Pyrrhotite - 40%Marmatite - 17%Chalcopyrite - 2%Magnetite - 10%Talc and other Silicates - 31%The sulphides are intimately associated with each other and often finely disseminated throughout the siliceous gangue. An abundance of middling particles exist in the circuit and a delicate balance has to be maintained between concentrate grades and metal recoveries.The metal content of the mill feed fluctuates between 0.4 to 0.7% for copper and 6 to 13% for zinc.The flow sheet of the concentrator is shown in Figure 1.Eight sample streams have been selected for on-stream analysis, namely1. The McGill Bubble Size Analyzer, with the original image-capturing device (digital video camera), has a proven record for measuring bubble size distributions that are relatively narrow, such as in mechanical cells with frother. However, some problems arise when dealing with bubble size distributions characterized by a bi-modal shape and wide range of sizes such as found in some flotation columns. To measure wide bubble size distributions it is necessary to increase both the resolution to image the small bubbles and the viewing area to include the large bubbles. This can be done using a digital still camera: digital still cameras can have higher resolution than the digital video cameras currently used and with the proper lens the viewing area may be increased without resolution loss. The digital still camera approach was used to measure bubble size distributions in flotation columns at different operations in Chile. A comparison with typical bubble size distributions generated with mechanical cells is presented.

"Temperature effects on the erosion of the 6063 aluminum alloy were investigated. Erosion experiments were performed by sandblasting silicon carbide particles of 80 grit size. The target volume loss, and worn depths of the eroded material were investigated at different temperatures. It was found that the temperature had only a minor impact on the peak attack angle. The effect of temperature on erosion damage depended on the relative humidity (RH) of the environment. IntroductionThe synergy of wind and sand or dust may result in the erosion of materials. However, the severity of erosion damage in different areas and in different seasons might be varied, depending on environmental variables such as temperature and humidity. As a result, determining the effect of environmental variables on erosion damage is important in selecting or ranking materials for their suitable applications in diverse areas.The relationship between erosion wastage and temperature is governed by many factors including temperature dependent properties of the material (strength, ductility, toughness, and dynamic hardness, etc.), mechanical erosion characteristics, the rate of oxidation, and the mechanical properties of oxides. Although the effect of temperature on erosion has been studied for engineering materials (Smeltzer et al., 1970; Gat and Tabakoff, 1978; 1980; Levy et al., 1986; Levy and Man, 1986; Chinnadurai and Bahadur, 1995; Howard and Ball, 1997; Colclough and Yeomans, 1997; Suckling and Allen, 1997), published literature dealing with aluminum alloy is rather limited."

Attention has been drawn in the publications of the Department of Mines to the view that veins of two different ages occur in the Cariboo district, namely, those of Jura-Cretaceous age and those of pre" Mississippian age. It has been further pointed out that while there is doubtless a wide distribution of veins of pre-Mississippian age in and about the Barkerville and Stanley areas, and in the vicinity of Round Top mountain and Yank's peak, there is no such wide distribution of veins carrying gold values of commercial significance. Veins of the latter type discovered to date occur almost exclusively within one or other of two comparatively narrow zones, both trending northwest and southeast, the one extending from Island mountain co Round Top mountain, and the other from a point somewhat north of Stanley co Yank's peak. In addition, there is some evidence of a third zone trending northwest from Spanish mountain, at or near the contact of the pre-Cambrian and Mesozoic rocks. In short, all the evidence from prospecting and lode-mining operations to date indicates that values are mainly restricted co zones having marked directional distribution. Moreover, it can be demonstrated that the placer deposits resulting from the erosion of the pre-Mississippian veins have a similar directional distribution, allowance being made for modifications due to glaciation. The observations offered in this paper are of the nature of a generalization which seeks to explain certain anomalies both in the vein-mineralization and in the -important auriferous-pyrite replacement deposits in limestone which have recently been discovered. For the sake of brevity, the Island Mountain-Round Top Mountain zone will be referred to as Zone No. 1, and the Stanley-Yank's Peak zone as Zone No. 2.

"Peñoles is a mining group with integrated operations for the smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals, and it is also a chemicals producer. Peñoles is the world’s foremost producer of refined silver, metallic bismuth and sodium sulphate. It is also the leading Latin American producer of refined gold, lead and zinc. The Met-Mex Peñoles Zinc Plant commenced operations in 1973 with an annual production capacity of 105,000 t/y zinc. Since then, production capacity has increased, and at present, it stands at 240,000 t/y zinc. In this paper, the leaching process and particularly the operation of the jarosite circuit is reviewed, specifying process improvements to treat high iron calcines.INTRODUCTIONTwenty years ago the Electrolytic Zinc Plant in Peñoles was treating high quality zinc concentrates with low concentrations of iron (~7.5 wt.%) and silica (1.8 wt.%). Nowadays the quality of zinc concentrates is poor with a typical iron content of around 11 wt.% and silica at 2.0 wt.%. This has created numerous processing problems in our roast-leach-purification- electrolysis sections. In order to meet customer requirements it is necessary to find processing solutions to assure the operational continuity of the plant. These processing solutions are the focal point of this paper.REVIEW OF THE LEACHING PROCESSThe purpose of the leaching process is to recover the metals, mainly zinc, through a series of extraction stages with sulphuric acid solutions, which progressively increases the zinc dissolution. After the series of acidification stages, the solution, which is rich in iron, is sent to the jarosite circuit to separate zinc from iron (Garcia & Valdez, 1996). The first step of the leaching process is the neutral leach circuit which produces a zinc sulphate solution that is sent to the purification section for the removal of impurities such as cadmium, cobalt and copper. Then this solution is sent to the tank house to feed the electrolytic cells."

"The development and industrial applications of magnetic liners have been around for decades. A Swedish company SKEGA first introduced the rubber magnetic liner, and then followed by the Chinese metal magnetic liners. Traditionally, both liners were used in secondary and regrind ball mills, especially for ores containing magnetic materials. Mostly steel balls or equivalent forged balls, usually below 60 mm in diameter, were used as grinding media. With the development of mineral resources over the years, SAG mills and larger ball mills have become the dominating components for comminution circuit design globally. Due to the larger ball mills and thus larger grinding balls (up to 80 mm) especially in non-ferrous metal industry, the application of magnetic liners has been very limited. Based on the new development of materials, the HMR Group Limited has been exploring new designs of magnetic liners which led to the invention of the Nano Steel Magnetic Liner (NSML). Recently, NSML had a successful application in a 5.5m x 6.5m ball mill with 80 mm balls at the Erdenet Copper Mine in Mongolia. Although the first set of liner had a service life of 12 months, the design of the second set was modified and improved to accommodate the operating conditions, which is expected to reach least 24 months service life. The original manganese steel liner only had about 8 months liner life.1. IntroductionMineral processing is an essential operation for the development and utilization of mineral resources. The effective concentration of various useful minerals depends on sufficient liberation of the mineral particles in the ore. The crushing and grinding process such as ball milling are the most common way to achieve proper liberation size. Mill liner is an eternal topic for the operations, not only because it protects the equipment, but also affects the mill grinding efficiency and availability. In recent years, magnetic mill liners have been developed that can easily meet the production targets with numerous benefits, such as zero maintenance, reducing specific energy consumption and improving grinding efficiency."

"The decrease in strength with increasing rock specimen size is usually associated to the increase in the number of defects inside the specimens at small scale (centimeters) but also to the role of the rock mass structure at the rock mass scale (meters to decimeters).This matter of concern was particularly focused when determining the size of pillars in underground mines. Some formulae regarding strength of pillars have been proposed but they usually consider only the size and shape of the pillars and the strength of the intact rock. The structure tends to be overlooked or hidden behind the scale, but it is probably very relevant. For standard tunnel design, the approach by Hoek and Brown (1997), taking the structure into account in terms of the GSI, is commonly used. However, this approach does not specifically consider the size of the tunnel. Thus, a size larger than the so-called representative elementary volume is implicitly contemplated.The authors have recently performed a lab study on the effect of the structure in the strength, deformability and post-failure characteristics of granite at lab scale (NX size) extended here. This experimental program included intact and artificially jointed rock specimens. Obtained results permit to observe the changes in strength, deformability and post-failure behavior of this “small scale rock masses”, associating the role of the structure to the observed complete stress-strain response of the specimen, which can improve our understanding of the actual complete mechanical response of rock masses."

"Av. Bases de Manresa 61-63, Manresa (08242) Barcelona, SpainTantalum is a strategic metal and an improvement of the mineral processing is an important issue. The main objective of this work is to optimize the grinding technologies for tantalum ores with high pressure grinding rolls. The selected ore for this study was an altered leucogranite from the Penouta Open Pit Mine (NW Spain). In the present work mono-size experiments have been carried out using grinding rolls with controlled pressure. The particle size distribution has been monitored in the input and output of the high pressure grinding rolls for each experiment. The cylinder pressure that is transmitted to the particles has been determined. New population balance models are presented for high pressure grinding rolls with parameter adjust for tantalum ore. The obtained model uses the physical description of particles under the comminution action of the grinding rolls. The obtained results are in agreement with other models and the errors in the adjustment are low. The selection function proposed for this model describes adequately the breakage probability of the particles inside the high pressure grinding rolls. The presented model can be a good alternative for simulating a high pressure grinding roll process. INTRODUCTIONTechnology for grinding have been improved for many years, introducing new variables and parameters involving energy consumption, mechanical stress analysis of the compression particles or pressure application for optimizing the comminution (Morrell et al, 1997). High pressure grinding rolls is a modern technology that is proven to reduce the operating costs in full scale plants when compared with other milling technologies. Its benefits on energy saving and simplicity in the process have been studied and applied, first in the cement clinker industry (Abouzeid & Fuerstenau, 2009) and after in mining activities, especially in metallic ore deposits (Austin et al, 1991; Guevara & Menacho, 1992; Morrel et al, 1997; Torres & Casali 2009; Numbi & Xia, 2015). Electrode Columns are commonly used in electric furnaces to deliver current and regulate furnace power to the smelting or melting process. Hatch has developed an innovative patent-pending system for lowering ("slipping") and/or raising ("back-slipping") the electrodes through an electrode column, without requiring the release of any clamping devices. All clamping forces are applied by springs. Unlike systems employing hydraulically applied clamping forces, (e.g., water bladders) the spring system is failsafe. Its inherent simplicity virtually eliminates the need for maintenance. The Hatch system is particularly applicable to Soderberg electrodes, and comprises two axially movable slipping clamps and a stationary power clamp, each of which apply a distributed, radial clamping force to the electrode. The magnitudes of the slipping sleeves' clamping forces and sequencing of their axial movements are selected such that the slipping clamps, in conjunction with the weight of the electrode, provide slipping or back slipping without release of any clamping force.

CRANGES in construction ideas and the continually rising costs of labour and conventional building materials, particularly since World War II, have prompted widespread investigations into the development and adaptation of new materials to meet the new requirements and to help reduce costs. Lightweight aggregates have been prominent in these investigations. The lightweight aggregates most commonly used today are foamed slag, cinders, pumice, diatomite, exfoliated vermiculite, expanded perlite, and bloated clay or shah. Lightweight aggregates contribute to the building industry in several ways: ( 1) in large structures the reduction in deadweight effected by the use of lightweight materials reduces the amount of reinforcing and structural steel necessary to support the structure; ( 2) the decrease in weight of lightweight blocks makes handling easier and faster; (3) pre-fabricated floor and roof slabs and tilt-up walls of lightweight concrete have become feasible and popular; ( 4) lightweight aggregate concrete has good nailability and is easily channelled; (5) concrete and plaster made with lightweight aggregate have good heat and sound insulation properties.

"Metal additive manufacturing has been a revolutionary step in designing new complex shapes with faster and cleaner building capacity in comparison to subtractive manufacturing processes. The ability to print lightweight alloys such as aluminum has made metal 3D printing attractive to different industrial sector from aerospace to energy and bioengineering. Of particular interest in this study, are the mechanical and microstructural properties of AlSi10Mg-200°C alloys. In this project, samples were 3D-printed in horizontal direction using an EOS M290 machine by Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technique. Uniaxial tensile tests and high strain-rate impact e tests were carried out to investigate the mechanical properties and to study the repeatability of the process. A constitutive model is developed to predict the results of the mechanical tests at varying strain rates to better understand the high strain-rate behaviour of these alloys. Using optical microscopy, features such as scan tracks and melt pools within the AlSi10Mg-200°C samples were observed, and the microstructure was observed to be homogenous. The previously listed tests were compared to the results obtained for similar cast alloy counterpart, i.e. A360.0.INTRODUCTION A relatively new way of manufacturing parts is on the increase as rapid prototyping becomes increasingly popular throughout the world. Additive manufacturing is a process which, given a 3D model, uses metallic material in powder form to build a part layer by layer until completion (Gu, Meiners, Wissenbach, & Poprawe, 2013). This way of rapid prototyping is very attractive in comparison to other possibilities because of its ability to accommodate complex design and geometries. Conventional manufacturing methods have limitations when it comes to complex geometries, but additive manufacturing allows for increased design flexibilities while maintaining a light and stable final product (Murr et al., 2012). It also allows for a reasonable cost, especially for small batch sizes that would otherwise be extremely expensive."

The scanning electron microscope (SEM) was primary developed for imaging applications. With the introduction of the Si(Li) energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), simultaneous imaging and x-ray microanalysis became possible. However, long working distance and high current were needed because the position and small solid angle of the EDS detector. The high spatial resolution is generally obtained at short working distance with a SEM. Unfortunately x-ray microanalysis is never performed in the best imaging conditions. The annular silicon drift detector system is inserted below the objective lens which gives a higher solid angle (up to 1.3 sr). In consequence, a lower working distance and probe current can be used. An improved spatial resolution becomes possible during x-ray microanalysis. With this x-ray detector installed on a cold-field emission scanning electron microscope, quantitative x-ray microanalysis with high spatial resolution at low beam energy and low current becomes possible with the possibility of using the various different type of imaging at the same time. Also, since the count rate can be as high as 1,500 kcps, which lowers significantly the detection limit of elements as well as the minimum feature sizes of different phases that can be distinguished.

"The effect of nitrogen on the flotation separation of sulphides from complex ores from Brunswick Mining and Smelting (New Brunswick) and Mattabi Mines (Ontario) was investigated. The most significant finding was enhanced pyrite floatability after as little as 3 minutes nitrogen conditioning. This was used in a novel sphalerite/pyrite separation process developed on the Brunswick ore. After aeration and Cu/Pb bulk flotation in air using xanthate the slurry was nitrogen conditioned, xanthate added and the pyrite floated in nitrogen. As an example up to 70% pyrite recovery with about 20% sphalerite recovery was achieved. Sphalerite was recovered from the pyrite tailings and the pyrite concentrate by copper-activation, raising the pH to 10 and floating in air. About 65-70% recovery at 35-40% Zn grade was achieved compared to 25% Zn grade by the conventional route. The process offers a promising alternative to current practice which seeks to depress pyrite at all stages. A possible mechanism of the effect of nitrogen is presented. INTRODUCTIONUse of gases other than air in froth flotation has been reported from time to time. [Podobnik and Shirley, 1982; Lin and Metzer, 1975]. Of all the gases, nitrogen would appear to hold the greatest practical promise because of its easy availability and chemical inertness. It is used in froth flotation in chalcopyrite-molybdenite separation [Redfearn, 1983]. The use of nitrogen in polysulphide chalcopyrite. this case is mainly to reduce the oxidation of a compound (Nokes reagent) used as a depressant for There is no reported use of nitrogen in the flotation of other sulphide minerals."

The model for methane removal from the workings directly behind an advancing longwall as presented in this paper may be used for U-ventilated cross or length-wise systems of longwall advance, starting from the boundaries of the extraction field. In mines with high methane concentrations, Uventilated longwall extraction from the boundary of the extraction field produces a methane risk. The risk is manifested by a higher methane concentration at the end of the longwall, upper gate and incline. The methane in increasing concentrations, which is emitted mainly from the workings with caved areas, appears towards the end of the longwall and in the upper gate. The graphical model of the longwall provided includes both the workspace of the longwall and the caved area. Based upon a model of the rock distribution in the cave, a ventilation model comprising two standard air splits and large number of crosswise air splits has been constructed. Simulations indicate that if the shearer is not present in the longwall, the air distribution in the caved area is symmetrical. The presence of the shearer, both at the bottom and the top of the longwall, causes an asymmetrical air distribution in the cave, that is the asymmetrical flows in the goaf and longwall workspace and in the inflows and outflow between those regions. This phenomenon causes an increase in methane concentration at the end of the wall and at the upper gate. The methane removal method proposed for workings with a caved area directly behind the advancing U-ventilated longwall, starting from the boundary of the field, consists of the removal of methane-air mixtures from the caved area with the boom pipes. These booms may be of several meters long and may be extended if necessary. The insertion of the boom pipes into the cave towards the end of the longwall and connecting them with the general methane removal system creates negative pressure causing a change in the depression field, which is the aerodynamic potential field in the goaf area around the ends of the boom pipes. This will promote the extraction of the methane-air mixture from voids and the goaf cracks, and the area from which methane is being extracted may extend to the side of the cave. This is a positive phenomenon, which could result in the methane flow from the goaf into the airflow in the longwall workspace decreasing or even stopping. A reduction in the methane flow into the longwall workspace with extractions booms will be advantageous for the production continuity. Based on the floor load model for the rocks in the cave and the methane-removal boom load model, the value of the force required to move the boom behind the advancing wall has been calculated. Strength calculations for the pipe were performed using a finite elements method. The analysis results, as well as the comparison of the pipe material effort to the strength parameters of steel, which can serve as piping material (for the assumed load conditions), lead to a belief that the proposed boom construction satisfies the strength requirements.

This paper presents an overview of the metallurgical work on the Strange Lake Alkalic Complex (SLAC), from historical development of the "Main Zone" to present day develoment of the "B Zone". The SLAC, originally discovered by the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) in the northeastern Canadian Shield of Québec and Labrador, is one of the world’s largest deposits of rare earth elements (REE) including yttrium and high field strength elements (HFSE) including zirconium, niobium, and titanium. It is part of a Precambrian, post-tectonic complex of peralkaline granites which intruded along the contact between gneisses and monzonites of the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield. Mineralization of interest at Strange Lake principally occurs within peralkaline granite-hosted pegmatite and aplite sheets and, to a lesser degree, within the host granites, particularly in intra-pegmatitic granites. The highest grade and metallurgically most favorable mineralization is in the upper, open pit mineable parts of the SLAC. Metallurgical development has been conducted under a number of mining companies, and various value metals have been targeted throughout the history of the deposit, including yttrium, zirconium, niobium, and rare earths. Historic processing routes tested have included ore beneficiation, atmospheric leaching, solvent extraction (SX), and metal precipitation. This paper also presents the metallurgical development supporting Quest Rare Minerals Ltd.’s (Quest) 2013 Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and 2014 Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA).

Al-Si-Cu and Al-Si-Mg alloys are widely used in several applications. Although they can be produced near-net-shapes, products made of these alloys very often require some machining. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the machinability of A319 and A356 under TO and T6 conditions. The machinability was assessed using during dry drilling machining process and the machinability indexes used are the chip form, the chip breakability and the cutting forces. It is found that 319 and 356 exhibit different machinability behaviors, especially in the T6-condition in terms of forces requirements, chip breakability and chip segmentation. It is also found that both the microstructure of the workpiece materials and the machining conditions significantly affect the chip formation mechanism, and therefore, the machining parameters could be selected to promote a chip form that is easily manageable in production.

Several occurrences of disseminated galena, including a former producing mine, are found in Pennsylvanian fluviatile sandstone of the Salmon River Basin, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Detailed study of the distribution of these occurrences has revealed that highest galena concentrations are found in sandstone overlying channel-shaped depressions in felsic basement rocks. These buried depressions, in turn, correlate in position with modern streams in areas of basement exposure. This correspondence suggests that the latter are at least partially controlled by an exhumed Pennsylvanian topography. If this is correct, then several other streams in the area, lying on basement, may be used to locate possible undiscovered lead deposits in sandstones of the Salmon River Basin.

"This paper highlights some of the potential application areas of knowledge-based systems in the mining industry. The basic theoretical principles associated with knowledge-based systems are discussed and the justification for mining applications is given. The paper concludes with a brief description of a prototype knowledge-based system applied to scraper selection that was developed at Université Laval on a LISP machine. IntroductionThe beginning of Artificial Intelligence coincided with the conception and development of the first computer systems some thirty years ago. At that time researchers were euphoric about the possibility of modelling the human reasoning process. Soon, however, they discovered that the combinatorial aspect of the set of possible solutions to a particular problem did not permit an in-depth evaluation.In the mid-60s researchers started to look at the heuristic approach because it was more suited to human behaviour with its congnitive abilities (i.e. representing, reasoning, problem solving and advising). The heuristic approach allows possible results rather than exact solutions and it is more rapid and cost effective than the exhaustive combinatorial analysis. The heuristic approach did allow some noticeable progress in the seventies with the development of the first expert system called MYCIN with the objective of diagnosing blood infection diseases."

"Since there was no representative from Wesfrob Mines Limited, the information on their infra-red concentrate drying operation, which had been prepared by Mr. K. Blower, was presented by Mr, Dorland. Mr. Blower, in submitting the information, emphasized that their objectives in this operation were (a) to guarantee less than 90%, of flow-moisture in their copper concentrates and thus satisfy marine shipping regulation• and (b) to minimize capital costs, The infra-red dryers have satisfied these objectives.To control final moisture in the copper concentrate, current practice is to preheat the filter cake with steam in the disc filter hood and then conveyor-0r7 the concentrate with infra-red calrod heaters. The application of steam aids the system as follows:1) Improves vacuum pump efficiency.2) Lowers viscosity of filtrate (increased temperature},3) Preheats the cake prior to radiant heating. (150°F)The hot cake discharging from the filter ranges from 10.6 to 10.9% moisture. After radiant heating the moisture level is reduced to 8.5% - 9.7% depending on production rate. Further moisture loss occurs during conveying and transferring to the stockpile for a final shipment moisture ranging from 8.1% to 9.5%. "Statistics show that the drawbell in underground mines is usually subjected to significant damage by impact loading due to falling ore. Drawbell damage causes a large quantity of residual ore to remain on the drawbell, thus leading to a huge waste of ore resources. In this study, the Cavity Monitoring System (CMS) and Surpac software were employed to visualize the 3-D damage. Also, the Discrete Element Method (DEM) was employed to perform simulations of the falling ore to investigate the damage evolution of drawbells under repeated ore impact and obtain the dynamic damage accumulation mechanism. The reason of drawbell damage was found due to the micro-shear cracks. The numerical simulations of a drawbell damage process under repeated impact loading showed the main failure type was shear failure and this type damage was found increasing with more ore falling. INTRODUCTIONDrawbells are an important part of underground mines and play a significant role in ore recovery in terms of safety, economy and efficiency (Brunton et al., 2010; Hustrulid & Bullock, 2001; Trueman et al., 2002). In most cases, blasted ore is gravitated along the drawbell and finally arrives at the footwall of the drawpoint. However, some of the blasted oversize ore blocks clog the drawbell road and those ore pieces are called hang ups (Penswick, 1997). However, any damage on a drawbell is believed to be the reason for these hang-ups. In the literature, researchers have reported that the stability of the draw-point is influenced by the stress distribution above and near the drawbell (Butcher, 1999; Neverov & Neverov, 2013). Much research in the literature has been done on draw-points in underground mines. In fact, rockfalls cause very serious damage on a small impact area in a very short time (Volkwein et al., 2011). Hoek (2000) pointed out that the blasted ore causes progressive ravelling and even collapse of the drawpoint, thus the ore in the stope is abandoned. In this paper, the Cavity Monitoring System (CMS) was employed to obtain the damage profile of a drawbell due to the impact of rockfalls and to confirm the residual blocking ore on the damaged drawbell. Then, the drawbell damage evolution due to repeated falling ore was simulated by the Discrete Element Method (DEM)."
