Bimetallic Au-Pd catalysts supported on amorphous silica-alumina (ASA) with vary amount of alumina (0, 8, 14, 28 and 100%) were prepared by the simultaneous reduction of palladium and gold precursors by ethanol in the presence of the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses indicated formation of alloyed Au-Pd particles. Ammonia temperature programmed desorption measurements were performed to monitor the acid strength and the amount of acid sites on the catalysts after their reduction with 10%H2/Ar at 573 K for 1h. The effect of the support acidity on the catalytic activity was investigated in the simultaneous hydrogenation (HYD) of toluene (T) and naphthalene (NP) in the presence of dibenzothiophene (DBT). Coke formation was also determined. Under the selected conditions (P = 5.0 MPa, T = 523 K, WHSV = 41.2 h-1), all the catalysts were resistant to poisoning with 113 ppm of S (as DBT). The hydrogenation activity of toluene and the HDS activity of DBT were found to correlate with the concentration of the medium strength acid sites. The enhancement of the HYD activity and the S- tolerance was related to modifications of the electronic properties of the metal atom upon interaction with the Brönsted acid sites and upon intermetallic interaction.

The company operates. rock ilmenite mine near Havre St. Pierre and produces its slag and ferrous products from its metallurgical installations located in the Sorel/Tracy region. QIT. born in 1948 from a joint-venture between Kennecott Copper Corporation and New Jersey Zinc Company, was acquired from BP Minerals by RTZ Corporation PLC in 1989 and remains its wholly owned subsidiary ever since.lImenite is a mineral rich in both titanium and iron oxides. QIT's proprietary mineral enrichment and electric smelting processes permit the concentration of the ilmenite ore and the separation of its main constituents to produce a 80% TiO2, slag and a high purity molten iron which is further transformed into iron ingots (pigs), steel billets, iron and steel powders.QIT's ilmenite deposit is located in the Lake TIo-A1Iard area, 43 km inIand from Havre St. Pierre, a community on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River some 960 km from Montreal. The orebody, covering some 542 000 m2, consists primarily of coarse-grained ilmenite (FeO.TiO2) with disseminated fine lenses of hematite (Fe2O3). The worthless mineral (gangue) associated with ilmenite is mainly anorthosite, a complex silicate. QITs mining operations are carried out using conventional open pit methods in a 500 m by 600 m horse-shoe shaped mine with nine benches developed. Primary blasting is performed on a weekly basis during the mining season. Blasted ore is trucked to the crushing station to be broken down to 15 cm and 7.5 cm sizes, respectively, by means of a primary jaw crusher and a secondary cone crusher. Minus 7.S cm ilmenite is then loaded into hopper cars for the 43 km trip to the Havre St. Pierre terminal where it is stockpiled and reclaimed by under-ground conveyor chutes to a ship loading tower at the dock. The crushed ore is shipped to QIT's smelter located in Sorel in 40 000 tonne carriers from April to December."

One fundamental requirement for surface and underground rock engineering is the ability to characterise the rock mass. An accurate characterisation of the rock mass allows rock engineers to optimize designs safely and economically. A number of classification systems have been developed in the past 50 years to help characterise rock masses such as RMR, Q system, Rmi, and several others. The challenge in developing rock characterisation schemes is often practicality, i.e. creating systems with relatively simple inputs for the everyday practitioner. A second challenge is the degree of subjectivity often inherent in commonly used classification systems. These challenges are especially exacerbated in weak rock or densely jointed rock masses. This paper introduces a new approach to characterise densely jointed rock mass using artificial neural networks and principal component analysis, based on principles commonly used in the geotechnical engineering of rock fills and waste rock dumps. Thirteen input parameters are dimensionally compressed using principal component analysis. Using a global database with more than 100 case histories, an artificial neural network is developed to conduct the rock mass characterisation. The advantage of this approach is less subjectivity as commonly used engineering (quantitative) terms are put to use. A further advantage is that given that the method is site-data dependent, it allows for ‘fine tuning’ of the model for a specific site.

"Excavation of deep underground openings in highly stressed grounds can generate new fractures near the openings. As a result, rock mass bulking may occur, leading to large wall deformation. A better understanding of brittle rock failure and the associated fracturing process at the laboratory scale is an essential step towards evaluating dilation behavior of rocks. A grain-based model that can capture dilation behavior of rocks under various loading conditions at the laboratory scale can be a useful approach to study rock mass bulking at the field scale. The aim of the paper is to study the dilation behavior of rocks at the laboratory scale employing numerical simulation. A modified grain-based model is used to simulate the macroscopic response of crystalline rocks by considering micro-fractures at the grain scale. Grains generated with the Voronoi tessellation are allowed to fail in tension or in shear using a strain-softening model. Damage is represented by either grain boundary fracture or grain failure, or the combination of the two. As stress increases, the process of damage, fracture initiation and coalescence in rocks can be captured.The grain-based model was calibrated using test data of the Lac du Bonnet granite and a parametric study was conducted. Numerical simulation results showed that the proposed modeling approach is able to capture most of the mechanical properties, fracture pattern, and dilation behavior in both unconfined and confined loading conditions. In an unconfined compression test, interactions of microscopic fractures may lead to macroscopic shear or axial splitting failure depending on the chosen micromechanical parameters. Numerical experimental results show that the dilation behavior of the model is strongly related to the failure mechanism of rocks. Tensile-failure-dominated failure mode generates large dilation due to the formation of new cracks that are sub-parallel to the loading direction. On the other hand, shear-failure-dominated failure mode produces small volume increase. One significant finding from this study is that in order to capture large dilation using grain-based UDEC models, intragranular grain failure should be considered."

"This paper presents a discussion of the mechanisms by which aerosols of the process electrolyte are entrained into the breathing environment of copper, Zinc and nickel eIectrowinning tankhouses. Literature outlining the health effects associated with worker & posure to the acidic and metallic contaminants found in the airbome aerosols is summarized and compared with existing North American regulations.A brief review of the existing technologies for the source reduction of these aerosols is presented. This paper outlines the industry experience with use of covers, balls, beads, shapes, fixtures and chemical surfaetants. Each of these devices is ranked according to its effusiveness in the process in which it is used, and rated according to its operator acceptance.The various forms of existing in-plant ventilation systems are reviewed with a discussion of their relative merits and effectiveness. Actual experience is related, detailing the methods of testing for ambient contaminant levels in a variety of tankhouse environments. Guidelines are provided for the site and process specific criteria which govern the selection and ultimate effectiveness of a particular form of ventilation system.Finally, actual project experience is cited in which hydraulic modelling is used a design tool in tankhouse ventilation design. These projects include the upgrading of existing traditional ventilation designs, and the ''grass roots"" design of a more efficient aerosol source control system to be used in high altitude, cold weather sites."

Scaffolds are temporary structures built to facilitate construction activities on site. A considerable amount of resources are allocated to scaffolding on industrial projects. Variability in geometrical features and space accessibility of structures on industrial projects, in addition to involvement of different trades that share the use of scaffolds, requires an extensive understanding of scaffolding requirements. Hence, it?s important to plan and estimate scaffolding man-hour requirements for the different construction areas on an industrial site. Contributing factors involved in such estimates include the list of trades that work in a construction area, trade working hours, volume of work, geometry of equipment erected, etc. A simulation template for predicting scaffold erection man-hour values for individual construction areas in an industrial project was developed in Simphony 4.0. The template is based on mapping the geometry of equipment and other factors to man-hours of scaffold work. The template facilitates the use of distributions as inputs and produces a range estimate of scaffold man-hours. The mapping is based on a linear regression model derived from existing project data from PCL Industrial Management Inc. The template is being further developed to incorporate the ability to predict scaffold erection schedule and material requirements based on construction work areas or equipment lists of an industrial construction project.

"Monitoring of all the waste streams from Falconbridge's Sudbury Operations to determine whether they meet the required standards, has been performed for many years. By 1969, however, the number of samples being collected had become so large that a complete revision of the existing systemwas necessary. Sites previously designated by name only, were numbered, clearly marked on the ground and on maps which were circulated to all concerned. The types of pollutants analyzed were determined and specified for each sampling location and a chemical analysis report form was designed. The sampling schedule has been computerized to produce a periodic listing of the samples to be taken and the analyses required.An area map showing sampling sites, chemical analysis report form, spill report and a computer print-out example are shown and explained.EVOLUTION OF FALCONBRIDGE'S WASTEWATER. MANAGMENT SYSTEMFalconbridge Nickel Mines employs some 4500 people, operates nine mines, four mills and a smelter in the Sudbury basin. The operations are geographically fragmented into four widely separated locations, the Falconbridge operations east of Sudbury and the Onaping operations in Levack Township being the two largest of the four. The Lockerby area located to the west and the Lindsley Mine just north of Sudbury are now under development. The magnitude, the diversity and nature of the operations are such that constant vigilance is needed to prevent inadvertent damage to the environment. The purpose of this paper is to describe the information system used to monitor and control waste-water disposal on Falconbridge's properties to help ensure the maintenance of effluent standards satisfactory to the Ontario Water Resources Commission (OWRC) and to the Ontario Department of Health."

Impact of horizontal stresses on stability of underground workings in mines is a very important issue in underground mining. Identification of the initial state of stress in the rock-mass should be one of the main actions taken into account while designing and carrying out the mining activity in underground mines. The paper presents the tests on three dimensional stress pattern in Polish copper mines, owned by KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. Group, carried out in 2012. The research program covered 7 measuring stands in two mines; their average depth was about 1000 m. The main aim was to identify the values and directions of horizontal stresses in order to optimize the extraction and to improve the safety. The overcoring method with the use of CSIRO HI type probe was applied. The paper also describes the measuring technique which was developed for the purpose of specific mining and geological conditions of KGHM mines, taking into consideration the natural hazards encountered there as well as technical and operational capabilities with regard to drilling equipment. The experience gained during the underground measurements and the issue of making such measurements in underground copper mines in Poland are presented in the paper. The stress patterns obtained during the underground measurements are of application importance for the process of designing the spacing of mine workings and improving their stability and mine support selection.

Le Québec dispose de ressources en silice abondantes et diversifiées, pouvant convenir dans l'ensemble à la plupart des usages industriels. Dans les terrains Paléozoïques des BassesTerres du Saint-Laurent et des Appalaches, les ressources identifiées comprennent les grès quartzitiques purs du Croupe de Potsdam (Cambrien), exploités notamment à Saint Canut au nord de Montréal comme source de sable de silice pour l'industrie du verre; les arénites quartzitiques des Formations de Val-Brillant (Silurien moyen) et de Kamouraska (Ordovocien inférieur) exploitées dans l'est du Québec comme source de fondant métallurgique; les grès friables de la Formation de Guigues (Ordovicien) au Témiscamingue, à partir desquels on produit des sables de silice utilisés notamment en fonderie et en filtration. Dans la province structurale du Grenville, au nord du fleuve Saint-Laurent, les métaquartzites purs du Supergroupe de Grenville représentent une source importante de silice pour la production de silicium, de ferro-silicium et de carbure de silicium. Des veines et amas de quartz ont aussi été exploités un peu partout au Québec comme source de fondant métallurgique ou de silice ultra-pure pour la production de silicium métal. Quelques dépôts de sables naturels, généralement d'origine marine ou deltaïque sont finalement exploités dans la région de Montréal comme source de sable pour des usages n'exigeant pas un produit de haute pureté.

Phosphates and fluorides are used as regulators for the removal of silicates from diasporic-bauxite both in direct and reverse flotation. While using dodecylamine chloride as a collector, micro-flotation studies showed that sodium hexametaphosphate has stronger depressing power on diaspore than on silicate minerals with increasing sodium hexametaphosphate concentration at pH 6.5, but sodium fluorosilicate shows poor depression on diaspore with increasing sodium fluorosilicate concentration at the same pH. Zeta potentials of diaspore and silicate minerals become more negative both in the presence of sodium hexametaphosphate and sodium fluorosilicate. Adsorption density studies indicated that the adsorption density of sodium hexametaphosphate on diaspore is much higher than that on silicate minerals at the concentration of 75 mg/L. FTIR spectroscopy studies show that sodium hexametaphosphate interacted with the Al atoms exposed on the diaspore and silicate minerals surfaces to form P?O?Al bonds through the P02 groups. It is possible that sodium fluorosilicate interacted through F- or [SiF6]2- with silicate minerals surfaces based on the analysis by AES.

"Al-Sc-Zr alloys form thermally stable L12 precipitates which provide high temperature strength. Although the overall fraction of L12 Al3Sc and Al3Zr may be increased by increasing scandium (Sc) and zirconium (Zr) content, such additions may increase primary phase fractions and do not produce desirable secondary phase morphologies. Rapid solidification techniques, such as melt spinning, increase solute atom concentration within the matrix. When the supersaturated matrix is aged, higher precipitate volume fractions at low Sc and Zr levels can be achieved improving high temperature strength. Melt spinning was used to rapidly solidify (107 k/s) a thin ribbon of Al-0.5Sc-0.4Zr at. %. The ribbon was compacted and extruded into 99.8% dense rods, and then aged using multi-step isochronal heat treatment up to 600°C. Precipitation strengthening was evaluated by ambient hardness measurement. The ambient hardness of melt-spun ribbon after precipitation hardening increased by 450 MPa (~67% increment) during isochronal heat treatment.INTRODUCTION Small Sc and Zr additions to aluminum improve strength and creep resistance above 300°C due to tri-aluminide precipitation of Al3(Sc,Zr) in L12 structures similar to ??, Ni3(Al,Ti) in nickel superalloy, but the Al3(Sc,Zr) particles have a Sc-rich core surrounded by Zr-rich shell (Figure 1). The Al3Zr shell limits atomic transport between the Al3Sc core and the matrix and reduces coherency strain. These factors reduce precipitate coarsening rate at elevated temperature (Bergner & Van Chi, 1977; Fujikawa, 1997; Knipling et al., 2011; Clouet et al., 2006).Figure 1. "This paper compares Canadian provincial mining safety regulations addressing hoist safety, automatic hoisting, and shaft obstruction. The regulations are quite similar among provinces, with only slight differences. Risk-mitigation strategies used in other industries are discussed, including their applicability to mine hoists. The specific case of software safety is introduced through examples. The mitigation of software failure is based on the use of the software lifecycle as recommended by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61508 standard. Finally, ways to improve hoist safety are proposed.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article compare entre elles les diverses réglementations provinciales canadiennes concernant la sécurité des machines d'extraction, le levage automatisé et les obstructions dans les puits. Les réglementations sont assez semblables entre les provinces, mais elles comportent de légères différences. Les stratégies d’atténuation des risques utilisées dans d’autres industries sont abordées, incluant la possibilité de les appliquer aux treuils de mines. Le cas spécifique de sûreté des logiciels est abordé par des exemples. L’atténuation de la défaillance des logiciels est basée sur l’utilisation du cycle de vie du logiciel, comme cela est recommandé par la norme 61508 de la Commission électrotechnique internationale (CEI). "This new tool can be used as a quick guide f or the assessment of the potential economic wealth of any risky capital project. It does provide an unambiguous recommendation of the type ""go or no go"" to the decision-maker simply by comparing two different ratios profit/investment. One ratio determines the minimum value required to at least break even while the other measures a probable value based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes.Its application is briefly illustrated by means of an underground gold mine extension project, an oil sands mine project and a polymetallic open pit project.Once a favourable recommendation has been obtained then a detailed ""cash flow after taxes"" analysis can be carried out for the project.IntroductionMany tools are used in financial decision-making such as the payback period, the discounted cash flow, the internal rate of return and the wealth growth rate (Berry , 1971).These tools are useful and meaningful in evaluating normal projects closely related to regular business where the number of assumptions made is usually very small and where the cost of capita! is usually selected as a discount rate or a hurdle value. In situations where a significant number of assumptions have to be made,two problems can emerge, namely:I. the risk involved is underestimated leading to a potential financial disaster; or2. a good opportunity is lost because the approach used in evaluating the project is too conservative.Each assumption has its own degree of uncertainty and it is well known that combining uncertainties together can lead to a total uncertainty of critical proportion. The easiest way to account for risk is to increase the discount rate or the hurdle value, but this approach alone is quite subjective and can easily lead to the problems described above."

"Decelerometer testing of a rigid guide system in a mine shaft pro vides usefuI information to operating and maintenance people. High acceleration/deceleration rates can lead to high maintenance costs to bath conveyances and shaft and can also present an operating risk . Possible disastrous results in the shaft have been avoided by restricting the maximum conveyance speed until the shaft and/ or conveyance problems have been solved.The test instrument is a valuable aid especially during commissioning or updating of a hoisting installation. High acceleration/deceleration rates also lead to reduced hoist rope life. During the past fourteen years, a total of 15,000,000 feet of testing was performed in 74 assorted shaft compartments.Based on this experience, it is possible to establish acceptable conveyance maximum speeds provided that all other conditions in the shaft compartment are normal. The body of the paper will present examples of several tests made under actual operating conditions.IntroductionMore and more mine operators are recognizing the real value in the use of the decelerometer for determining the state of shaft guide alignment in their shaft compartments , not only during the initial mine start-up periods, but also on a regular basis while the mine is in production.Decelerometer testing, is a technique in which an accelerometer , commonly known as a decelerometer, is used for measuring conveyance acceleration/deceleration in a lateral plane. lts purpose is to determine the severity of shock loads produced by misaligned shaft guides. Testing is performed by mounting the instrument on the conveyance and operating the conveyance (empty and loaded) at various speeds up to and including full speed . However, full speed may not be attained due to conditions indicated by the tests. These conditions may present an operating risk to the plant."

"Projections of demand for Alberta coal indicate a quadrupling of current production rates to some 70 million tonnes/year by the end of the century. About half of this output-comprised of subbituminous coal-will be required within the province, primarily for generation of electric energy. The remainder-roughly 70 per cent high-volatile bituminous (hvb) steam coal and 30 per cent medium- or low-volatile bituminous (mvb/lvb) metallurgical coal-will be exported, principally to Pacific Rim and Western European countries. Direct employment in mining and coal processing is projected to increase from the present ca. 3000 to at least 12,000 persons.This paper presents separate forecasts for subbituminous, hvb and mvb/lvb coal production in the period 1982-2000; notes a number of possible developments that could substantially modify these forecasts; and briefly discusses attendant infrastructure requirements. Attention is drawn to potential shortages of qualified manpower and to threatening inadequacies of transportation facilities.IntroductionDespite the dislocations triggered by the 1973 'oil crisis', energy budgets of Western industrial countries are mostly still in the very early stages of the anticipated transition to greater reliance on coal. Shift s to coal are still more often only talked about than being implemented; and the public policies which are essential for timely development of facilities for producing, transporting and using coal are in many instances not yet even broadly formulated, let alone enunciated.In these circumstances, long-range projections of coal demand and supply-even if restricted to internal requirements- are subject to greater uncertainties than usually afflict such forecasts.On the demand side of the equation, these uncertainties arise ultimately from linkages between a need for coal and the availability and pricing of OPEC oil. The current surplus of oil on world markets, which has recently forced substantial reductions of posted prices, is undoubtedly a transient phenomenon that is unlikely to have any long-term impact."

"Exposure to airborne respirable silica in surface and underground mine operations is known to be the cause of industrial lung diseases. For this reason, silica is a regulated substance and worker exposure must be monitored regularly. Diesel exhaust also contains substances which are potential caricinogens. In an underground setting, diesel particulate may be the main component of what is referred to as respirable combustible dust (ReD). Although diesel particulate or soot is not at present a rigorously regulated substance, new epidemiological data is prompting North American institutes and agencies to regulate diesel soot or RCD exposure. This paper describes a method where by silicaand RCD exposure may be determined using a single personal sample. In this method, an airborne respirable dust sample is obtained and analyzed nondestructively for silica components using an on-filter X-ray diffraction method. Filters are then ashed at 500°C in a muffle furnace over a four-hour period to determine mass loss due to RCD burning. "IntroductionALTHOUGH most uranium deposits of the Canadian Shield lie along its western and southern margins, those of the Lake Athabasca region extend easterly along the north shore of the lake and beyond to Charlebois lake. The western end of this belt of deposits, in the vicinity of Goldfields, is 80 miles from the Palaeozoic contact, and its eastern end, at Charlebois lake, is 240 miles from the nearest Palaeozoic rocks.Deposits in this belt may be grouped in four districts, which are, from west to east:(1) The Goldfields district, an area approximately 20 miles square, centred on Beaverlodge lake and extending eastward from St. Joseph's point to Moose channel.(2) A small area in the vicinity of Sucker bay, which is about l0 miles east of Fond du Lac.(3) An area including Middle lake to the northwest shore of Black lake at the Nisto mine.(4) A fairly large area extending northward from the eastern end of Black lake, through Charlebois lake to Spreckley lake.HistoryThe region has stimulated interest in mining circles since the reconnaissance survey of J. B. Tyrrell of the Geological Survey of Canada in l893, who reported concentrations of iron along the north shore of lake Athabasca. The deposits were staked and re-staked up to the early 'twenties' but are too lean to form ore."

"The Trout Lake stockwork molybdenum deposit is located in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia, 50 km southeast of Revelstoke. The property is being explored by a joint venture between Newmont Exploration of Canada and Esso Minerals Canada.The deposit is associated with a small granodiorite stock of Upper Cretaceous age (76 Ma) which has variably altered the surrounding schists, argillites and marbles of the lower Paleozoic Lardeau Group to hornjelsic biotite schists and skarn. The intrusive is composed of a small stock and an intersecting network of northeast- and northwest-trending dykes at surface that coalesce downward into a larger stock. There are two main phases of intrusion, with an earlier quartz porphyritic granodiorite cut by an intra-mineral ""quartz diorite"" porphyry. A strong sub-vertical north-trending fault controls the distribution of the mineralized stock work and displays post-mineral movement.Molybdenite, accompanied by pyrite and pyrrhotite, is mainly present along the margins of veins in a well-developed quartz stock work, but occasionally is strongly disseminated in microfractured intrusives. The stock work is strongest in and around the contacts of the intrusive and its apophyses, and occurs over a vertical range of more than 1,000 m. As defined by the 0.10% MoS] contour, the main mineralized zone is up to 300 m long by 200m wide. Preliminary drill-indicated reserves, currently being revised, are approximately 50 million tonnes of 0.23% MoS2, within which are several zones of higher-grade material. Hydrothermal alteration, as defined by quantitative X-ray diffraction studies on composite core sections, is composed of a central quartz/K-feldspar/albite/minor biotite zone coincident with molybdenum mineralization, which is overlapped by a slightly later, antipathetic quartz/ sericite/pyrite zone. Ankeritic carbonate is also a common alteration mineral, but only traces of fluorite, and no topaz or sulfosalts, have been observed. Analysis for trace elements such as Sn, W, Bi, Sb, As, Hg, U, Ag, Au, Mn, Cu, Pb, Zn and F has been limited except for Sn and W, which appear to be zoned inside and outside the Mo zone respectively; the other elements do not show detectable patterns thus far."
